The US intelligence community has identified Russia as responsible for recent Tim Walz fake news designed to help Donald Trump! Here is what you need to know!
Tim Walz Fake News : A Quick Primer!
In the run-up to the 2024 US elections, Vice Presidential candidate and Minnesota governor Tim Walz was hit by accusations of sexual misconduct against underage male students at two schools he once taught.
Black Insurrectionist recently went viral with claims that Tim Walz had sex with a 14 year-old male student while he was a high school teacher at Alliance High School in Nebraska. Those claims was quickly eviscerated by many people who investigated the claims, which I covered here, here, here, and here.
That was followed quickly by a viral testimony video, in which a man who calls himself Matthew Metro claimed that he too had sex with Tim Walz while he was also a 14 year-old student, this time at Mankato West High School.
I also fact checked that viral Matthew Metro video, and showed how it appears to be a deepfake video, or merely uses an actor who superficially resembled the real Matthew Metro (like the fake Kamala Harris 2011 hit-and-run accident).
Both viral Tim Walz sex scandals were disproven pretty quickly, although many Trump supporters and right-wing personalities continue to push the fake claims and video, especially on X – the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Russia helped create Tim Walz fake news to help Donald Trump!
The Matthew Metro video was eerily similar to the fake video of a Black woman who claimed that she was knocked down by Kamala Harris in a 2011 hit-and-run accident. That effort was traced to a covert Russian disinformation team called Storm-1516 (also known as CopyCop), which was likely trying to influence the 2024 US elections.
So it came as no surprise when a senior US intelligence official finally confirmed on Tuesday, 22 October 2024, that Russian disinformation groups were responsible for creating and spreading fake news about Tim Walz.
The official with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence confirmed that the content (video) contained “several indicators of manipulation that are consistent with the influence efforts and tactics with Russian actors“.
Based on newly available intelligence, for example, the IC assesses that Russian influence actors manufactured and amplified inauthentic content claiming illegal activity committed by the Democratic vice-presidential candidate during his earlier career. The IC reviewed electronic media associated with this effort and in doing so revealed several indicators of manipulation that are consistent with the influence efforts and tactics Russian actors have used this cycle, including those highlighted in the Mid-September Election Security Update.
This appears to be yet more evidence that Russia was trying to influence the 2024 US elections in favour of former President Donald Trump, whom US intelligence assesses is the Kremlin’s preferred choice.

In its Mid-September Election Security Update, the Department of National Intelligence (DNI) identified Russia as the most prolific foreign actor in reading AI content to influence the 2024 US elections in favour of former President Donald Trump.
Of the top three actors we are tracking, Russia has generated the most AI content related to the election and has done so across all four mediums—text, images, audio, and video—though the degree to which this content has been released and spread online varies. These items include AI-generated content of and about prominent U.S. figures, and are consistent with Russia’s broader efforts to boost the former President’s candidacy and denigrate the Vice President and the Democratic Party, including through conspiratorial narratives.
Even though such Russian-manufactured fake news were quickly debunked, and did not turn out to be the October surprise former President Donald Trump was possibly hoping for, it is more than likely that Russia will continue to manufacture and/or spread more fake news about Tim Walz and Kamala Harris into the final two weeks of the 2024 US elections, and even in the post-election period, when they can sow doubts about the American democratic process.
Since the publication of that assessment, the IC is increasingly confident that Russian actors are considering—and in some cases implementing—a broad range of influence efforts timed with the election. Some of these are aimed at inciting violence and calling into question the validity of democracy as a political system, regardless of who wins. Others are aimed at amplifying false information and conspiracies—that may exacerbate post-election tensions in the United States.
The DNI also expects other foreign actors like Iran and China to conduct influence operations during the pre-and post-election periods.
