They will also use digital tools to make it easier to get insights from, measure and monitor compliance issues using digital data.

Samsung Malaysia B40 Children’s Outreach Programme!

As part of their CSR initiative, Samsung Malaysia ran their B40 Children’s Outreach Programme from 17 to 20 December 2019.

The Samsung Malaysia B40 Children’s Outreach Programme!

Held from 17 to 20 December 2019, the Samsung B40 Children’s Outreach Programme was a major project carried out in partnership with Me Books Asia, with support from:

  • Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Selangor (PPAS),
  • Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (YAWAS),
  • Persatuan Taska Negeri Selangor (PTNS),
  • Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya (MPSJ),
  • CoBlix, and
  • Atom & The Dot.

The four-day workshop, with twenty-two sessions, introduced over 200 children from six schools to fun and interactive STEM learning activities, like storytelling workshops, coding and VR experiences, and hands-on science experiments.

The idea is to expose children from families with household income of less than RM3,000 (B40) to the wonders of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and inspire them to expand their education in STEM subjects.

The B40 children used Samsung Galaxy devices, like tablets and the Galaxy Note10 to explore the magic of coding, and virtual reality.

Samsung not only sent their employees to facilitate the STEM workshops, as part of their Love & Care programme, they also donated several Samsung Galaxy tablets and Samsung TVs to the six schools, to encourage continuous STEM learning through technology.

Samsung partners also provided other basic necessities like whiteboards, marker pens, stationery sets, as well as Me Books Theatre and Me Books Plus app accounts.

This National Day, Maxis is celebrating the diversity of all Malaysians with its 100PeratusMalaysia campaign in collaboration with diverse, eclectic Malaysian personalities!

 

The Maxis 100PeratusMalaysia Campaign

Maxis kickstarted their 100PeratusMalaysia campaign by launching a short film depicting diverse Malaysian personalities.

In this short 100PeratusMalaysia film, these Malaysian personalities were taken through a journey of self-discovery. Leveraging the power of technology, they dug deeper into their identities through DNA testing.

Despite results showing that they had a link to various geographical locations around the world, there was one compelling truth – they are all #100peratusMalaysia.

The personalities involved in the campaign were writer and activist Marina Mahathir, food ambassador of Tourism Malaysia Dato’ Chef Wan, Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 Deborah Priya Henry, performing arts icon Tiara Jacquelina, actor and award-winning comedian Douglas Lim, SEA Games gymnastic gold medallist Farah Ann Abdul Hadi and national football legend Datuk Santokh Singh.

“The premise of our National Day campaign was using technology to not only understand our unique differences in a new light, but also acknowledge that our diversity is what makes us stronger and enables us to achieve great things. The more we know ourselves, the more we realise that our differences tell the story of who we are as Malaysians. At the end of the day, our love for Malaysia, our homeland, is what unites us, and we hope that this campaign will raise the spirits of Malaysians everywhere,” said Tai Kam Leong, Maxis’ Head of Brand and Marketing.

Dell MentorConnect Leads The Way In Diversity + Inclusion!

Dell Technologies just launched MentorConnect – a mentorship programme that promotes diversity and inclusion.

Here is our primer on the Dell MentorConnect programme, and how it will change the workplace dynamics in Malaysia!

 

What Is MentorConnect?

MentorConnect is a unique cross-company mentorship programme that promotes diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

It now has 17 mentors from 11 different companies, and has since helped over 220 mentees – both men and women – in a variety of roles, from finance, sales and operations to engineering, marketing and IT.

Present at the launch, Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, YB Hannah Yeoh said, “I commend Dell Technologies and its partners for launching the MentorConnect programme – this inter-company collaboration will help those participating to think out of the box, get new ideas and be inspired by how others are doing things.”

“Furthermore, I encourage the private sector and companies like Dell Technologies to explore ideas beyond the professional and personal development of the workforce, and consider the idea of a family-focused workplace.”

“Initiatives such as setting up a childcare centre in the workplace creates an enabling environment – both for mothers and fathers – for employees to thrive in the workplace. Childcare centres in the workplace not only retains women in the workforce but also assures the parents that their children are in a safe place.”

 

How MentorConnect Began

Dell MentorConnect began three years ago as a local initiative by the Penang chapter of the Women In Action Employee Resource Group.

The Women In Action ERG is a community of men and women across the world that aims to position Dell Technologies as an employer of choice for all, by creating a supportive and inclusive environment.

MentorConnect has since grown into a cross-company programme in both the Penang and Cyberjaya campuses of Dell Technologies.

Progress Made Real : The New Dell Social Impact 2030 Vision!

After releasing the final report for their 2020 Legacy of Good plan, Dell Technologies unveiled their new 2030 social impact vision – Progress Made Real.

Here is a summary of what Dell intends to advance beyond 2020…

 

2020 Legacy Of Good : A Roadmap To 2030

The 2020 Legacy of Good plan set a strong foundation for Dell Technologies’ new 2030 social impact vision, Progress Made Real, which focuses in on three key areas :

  • advancing sustainability,
  • cultivating inclusion, and
  • transforming lives with technology.

Dell Technologies shared with us a broad outline of what they have already started, and are seeking to achieve.

 

Progress Made Real : Advancing Sustainability

Looking toward 2030, Dell Technologies will continue to accelerate the circular economy, reduce the impact of Dell’s operations, support customers’ efforts to reduce environmental impacts, and champion the many people who build their products.

  • After a successful e-waste tracker pilot in partnership with Basel Action Network (BAN), Dell Technologies now makes global tracking technologies part of its existing electronics disposition partner audit program.
    The pilot program revealed some vulnerabilities in the downstream recycling process, which helped Dell Technologies to quickly take corrective action to address the operational gap.

  • Dell recently launched a process to use recycled material, Polyvinyl Butyral (rPVB), from car windshields to create the protective, waterproof lining of Dell laptop bags and backpacks.
    Dell is also using an innovative method of solution dyeing for these backpacks, which results in 90% less wastewater and 29% less energy, while generating 62% fewer CO2 emissions compared to typical piece-dyeing.
    The first bags and backpacks with rPVB began shipping in February and are forecasted to avoid approximately 74,000 pounds of landfill waste per month.

  • In partnership with suppliers Seagate and Teleplan (a storage device recycling / recovery specialist), Dell identified a new closed-loop process to recover the rare earth magnets from recovered enterprise equipment.
    The magnets are reformed for reuse in new hard-disk drives. In the initial pilot program, we are using the reformed magnets in 25,000 Seagate hard drives for our Dell Latitude 5000 series laptop.
    Reusing rare earth metals helps us avoid the need to mine the earth, which can cause environmental damage and health concerns for local communities.

 

Progress Made Real : Cultivating Inclusion

In the midst of a talent shortage, closing the diversity gap is critical to meeting future talent needs and for reflecting new perspectives of a global customer base.

Dell Technologies is actively building on several non-traditional hiring program pilots to broaden the company’s talent pipeline. Pilots include:

  • The neurodiversity hiring program provides training and possible full-time career opportunities for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
    In partnership with HMEA, The Arc of the Capital Area and Neurodiverisity in the Workplace, Dell Technologies’ program removes barriers that may limit an individual from showcasing their true abilities and potential during the typical job interview process. The pilot expanded from Massachusetts to Texas in April, 2019.

  • Re-entry programs like Dell Career Restart offer a re-entry experience for individuals who have been out of the workforce for a year or more, and leverages their previous career experience in a supportive environment. The company launched pilots in the U.S. and India.
  • Skilling and re-skilling programs include Dell Technologies’ partnership with Northeastern University’s AlignProgram, which enables students from diverse backgrounds to transition into a technology career through intensive coursework to earn a master’s degree in computer science. Project Immersion provides undergraduates at Minority Serving Institutions and Historically Black Colleges & Universities with skills for the digital future.
    Additionally, Dell Technologies’ distance education Laboratory for People with Disabilities (LE@D) online learning platform, teaches technology-based vocational skills to individuals with motor, hearing or other disabilities in Brazil.

Dell Technologies is also committed to addressing systemic challenges with diversity and inclusion. The company advocates for inclusive public policies and is a member of strategic coalitions like CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, and was also a founding member of the Reboot Representation Tech Coalition.

 

Progress Made Real : Transforming Lives with Technology

 Harnessing the power of technology enables limitless possibilities for advancing human progress and solving complex societal challenges. Dell Technologies is committed to applying its portfolio and partnerships to create a future capable of fully realizing human potential.

  • Dell Technologies continued to expand its solar learning labs to help bridge the educational gap in areas that lack access to consistent energy and technology in partnership with Computer Aid International.
    These labs are created by transforming shipping containers into classrooms with Dell Wyse Thin Client workstations managed by an air-cooled PowerEdge server for up to 20 students.
    With solar panels to generate electricity, the container can be deployed in remote locations.
    Dell Technologies has already funded 18 labs in six countries around the world. Microsoft has recently joined in this collaborative effort, awarding Computer Aid with a Technology for Social Impact grant to further provide technology access through the solar learning labs.

  • To fight pediatric cancer, Dell Technologies’ donated $30 million dollars over 6 years to Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) through a partnership designed to use technology solutions and employee volunteerism.
    Through Dell’s technology, TGen increased computational hours by almost 4x, allowing researchers and doctors to identify treatments faster, by turning a patient’s vast DNA and RNA sequencing data into insights.

Dell Technologies believes that ethics and privacy play a critical role in establishing a strong foundation for positive social impact.

The Dell 2020 Legacy Of Good Final Report

In 2013, Dell Technologies introduced the 2020 Legacy of Good with ambitious sustainability and social goals to put its technology and expertise to work to do the most good for people and the planet.

The final report, which was released today, details how Dell Technologies advanced progress and led many initiatives to solve complex global problems. Goals completed or that the company has made significant progress against so far include :

  • Recovered more than 2 billion pounds of used electronics via responsible recycling through programs such as Dell Reconnect, a partnership with Goodwill, and Dell’s Asset Resale and Recycling Services (achieved 2020 goal ahead of schedule).
  • Reused 100 million pounds of recycled content, plastic and other sustainable materials in Dell Technologies’ new products (achieved 2020 goal ahead of schedule).

  • Developed and maintained sustainability initiatives in 100% of Dell Technologies-operated buildings (achieved 2020 goal ahead of schedule).
  • Reduced wastewater discharge in manufacturing by 4.56M cubic meters.
  • Reduced 64% of product portfolio energy intensity footprint.
  • Delivered 5 million service hours to communities globally through initiatives that focused on but were not limited to :
    – Skills-based volunteering,
    – mentoring students, and
    – developing new nonprofit technology solutions (achieved 2020 goal of service hours).
  • Enabled eligible team members to participate in flexible work options and increased global participation to 60% (surpassed 2020 goal of 50%).
  • Achieved 89% or higher favorable responses in team member satisfaction globally (surpassed 2020 goal of 75%).
  • Allocated more than $3 billion dollars annually to diverse suppliers within supply chain programs and continued to qualify for the Billion Dollar Roundtable.
  • Rolled out company-wide foundational learning program focused on mitigating unconscious bias called Many Advocating Real Change (MARC) – with 100% participation from all executives globally.
  • Recognised byLinkedIn as a 2019 Top Company, by FairyGodBoss as a Top 10 Tech Company according to women working at Dell Technologies, by the Human Rights Campaign’s 2019 Corporate Equality Index as one of the best places to work for LGBTQ Equality (15 consecutive years) and by Ethisphere Institute as a World’s Most Ethical Company (6 consecutive years).

In other words, Dell Technologies is on track to complete or exceed over 75% of the goals ahead of schedule.

Kaspersky Lab Reports Anxiety Among Generation Z!

Kaspersky Lab reports that the majority of Generation Z do not seek professional advice to help them cope with anxiety issues.

In line with its global commitment to turn insecurity into security, Kaspersky Lab has joined forces with digital youth charity The Mix to help young people from around the world embrace their own insecurities. The objective is to show them that anxiety issues are not barriers to achieving happiness.

The new campaign is called #AndOwningIt.

 

Who Are Generation Z?

Generation Z are young people aged between 13 to 23 years old. With their world dominated by online news and social media, nearly half of Generation Z said they feel more anxious about their appearance than about their career prospects, money, terrorism and being bullied.

The report revealed that these anxious feelings, or worries, can impact young people’s behavior including how they approach social media.

It is quite common for Generation Z to create a more manufactured perception of how they look. Most young people also spend up to half an hour editing their images or videos prior to posting them on social media platforms. The reason is to create a flawless image.

 

What Are The Findings Of The Report?

It was reported that girls are more insecure than boys. They feel much more anxious about their appearance than their male counterparts.

Nearly double the number of female Gen Z-ers compared to male Gen Z-ers admit to changing their eating habits (such as overeating or refraining from eating) because of appearance-related anxieties.

Body improvement and fitness content on social media makes young women feel worse than young men. Females have admitted to skipping a social event in the past year due to social anxiety.

What’s more worrying is that Generation Z does not seek help on what to do when they are feeling anxious. The majority young people do not visit a doctor for advice on how to cope with their anxieties.

This meant that many young people are struggling and they are unsure about how to deal with their feelings.

 

How are Kaspersky Lab And The Mix Helping The Generation Z?

Kaspersky Lab has joined forces with The Mix, a digital youth charity that supports people under the age of 25 to launch a new campaign to help turn Generation Z insecurities into securities. The campaign  #AndOwningIt aims to empower them to embrace the very things that make them feel insecure and allowing them to realize that insecurities are not barriers to happiness.

The first step to turn an insecurity into a strength is by admitting/owning it.

The campaign will be supported by custom t-shirts featuring the most common insecurities young people have, thus encouraging them to accept their insecurities and start a conversation. All of the profits from the sale of the t-shirts will go to The Mix.

 

How Can You Help The AndOwningIt Campaign?

Kaspersky Lab and The Mix are urging Generation Z to join the conversation across social media with the #AndOwningIt hashtag. They could also purchase a t-shirt to show their support.

Maxis is celebrating Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Parent’s Day by paying tribute to single parents – both mothers and fathers – with their ONEder Parent campaign. Here is an awesome video about a single dad learning to understand his young daughter.

Maxis ONEder Parent x Parents Without Partners

As part of the campaign, Maxis is teaming up with Parents without Partners (PWP), a non-profit organisation that supports and empowers low-income single parents towards achieving financial independence. Maxis will help PWP reach more customers online through Maxis’ eCommerce platform.

Since 2007, PWP has been raising funds for its programmes by operating Jumble Station, a store selling pre-loved donated goods ranging from books, toys and household items to garments and accessories, among others.

As part of the partnership, the Maxis eCommerce team will set up an online store for PWP to create more awareness and drive visits from online shoppers. Maxis will also train the PWP team to set up a digital product library, as well to pack and fulfil orders via tracked courier services. In addition, Maxis will sponsor a year of hosting, maintenance and support of PWP’s ecommerce site.

ONEder Parent Jumble Station

Later this month, Maxis volunteers, MSquad, will be taking part in the ONEder Parent campaign by donating pre-loved clothes, accessories and household items to be sold through the Jumble Station e-store. They will also be volunteering their time to help PWP curate and organise their e-store’s new online inventory.

Microsoft : We Rock The Spectrum With An Hour Of Code!

To commemorate World Autism Awareness Day 2018, Microsoft organised an Hour of Code with We Rock The Spectrum gym. Participants from the Imagine Cup 2018 Regional Finals, Microsoft employees and volunteers from the National Autism Society of Malaysia came together to guide children on the autism spectrum through an Hour of Code Minecraft tutorial.

 

We Rock The Spectrum Gym

Initially founded in Tarzana, Los Angeles by Dina Kimmel, We Rock the Spectrum Gym has expanded across the United States. In December 2016, Nori Abdullah – the wife of Youth and Sports Minister YB Brig Jen Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar – Hana Jamaluddin and Rahmah Mahmood decided to bring the Gym to Ara Damansara, Malaysia.

“As we approach an age where technology is all around us and as the nation braces itself for the 4th Industrial Revolution, we are constantly seeking methods to educate our young ones to be ready for a digital future,” said Nori Abdullah, Co-owner, We Rock the Spectrum Gym Malaysia.

“With that in mind, it warms my heart to see Microsoft bring digital skills to the children here at We Rock the Spectrum Gym, enabling them to learn through the Hour of Code. Children with disabilities are less likely to complete primary school and more likely to be marginalized or denied access to education. This is even more true for girls and women with disabilities. With the partnership of Microsoft, we intend to shatter this stereotype and show the world how inclusion, diversity, and equal opportunity, can truly make a difference.”

 

Microsoft Rocks The Spectrum With An Hour Of Code

Combining World Autism Awareness Day 2018, with the effort to create STEM learning opportunities for children with different abilities, Microsoft organised an Hour of Code tutorial at We Rock The Spectrum gym. This is an autism-focused, indoor playground and kid’s gym that prides itself in being a sensory-safe environment.

Marking the occasion, K. Raman, Microsoft Malaysia’s Managing Director said, “We are proud to be partnering We Rock the Spectrum Gym in observing World Autism Awareness Day as we work to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Our long-term partnership with the Gym to include the Hour of Code as part of their program is in line with Microsoft’s efforts to democratise technology and bridge the opportunity divide. Empowerment begins with inclusion, and we firmly believe that the joys of technology should be shared with everyone, especially youth, as today’s digital natives are tomorrow’s digital workforce. An Hour of Code @ We Rock The Spectrum Gym

In addition to hosting the event, We Rock the Spectrum Gym announced a partnership with Microsoft Malaysia. The partnership will see the inclusion of Hour of Code as part of the Gym’s program, thus enabling children who play at the gym to get a chance to learn and experience coding.

To ensure that the children receive proper guidance, Microsoft will work closely with the gym trainers to ensure they are well equipped to conduct the Hour of Code sessions independently in the future.

The First Dell 2020 Legacy of Good Update Announced

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Dell Inc. just reported their first 2020 Legacy of Good update that recognises key CSR achievements for the combined company, following Dell’s merger with EMC. The new Dell 2020 Legacy of Good plan outlines Dell’s long-term commitment to society, team members and the environment.

As a result of the merger, the company has a broader technology portfolio, more engaged team members and greater resources to address the world’s most pressing challenges. The report summarises the efforts of Fiscal Year 2017 (Feb. 1, 2016 – Jan. 31, 2017).

 

The Updated Dell 2020 Legacy of Good Plan

The updated plan and goals reflect how Dell and EMC came together with a shared commitment to people and the planet. For example, the combined company has increased its investment in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) education for underserved youth. The company has also extended its partnership with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) for the third year running to promote the importance of STEM through mentoring program and scholarships.

To help cultivate an inclusive culture, Dell is extending its flexible work program to legacy EMC team members and offering more employee resource groups, connecting team members who share interests, lifestyles, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity or background.

The initial plan was developed during Dell’s Fiscal Year 2014 (Feb. 1, 2013 – Jan. 31, 2014). The new Dell 2020 Legacy of Good update includes original goals, adjusted goals as well as new goals to reflect the opportunities, scale and expertise of our combined organisation. Report highlights include:

Community

  • Dell has offered expertise and technology for 2.3 million underserved children directly and over 10 million people indirectly through strategic giving programs, reaching 59% of Dell’s direct impact goal and 84% of the indirect goal.
  • Since FY14, Dell employees provided over 3.3 million hours of community service in the areas in which they live and work. Dell’s goal is to provide 5 million cumulative hours of service by 2020.
  • Dell’s partnership, funding and technology enables TGen to accelerate and improve treatment plans for cancer patients. By working with Dell, the increased computational and storage capacity has reduced the time it takes to sequence a genome from multiple weeks to just six hours, logging over 1 million computational hours per month.
  • The first activity for the integrated Dell EMC Japan targeted the one-in-six children living in poverty in the country. Team members donated their books in support of the Teach for Japan non-profit organisation.
  • Dell Malaysia’s annual ‘Charity Engaged’ event raise donations for various charity organisations, which include the Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital, a Dell Giving recipient. The 2016 (FY17) edition raised more than MYR225,000 (~US$50,000), for a total of MYR1.8 million (~US$400,000) since its inception in 2006. 

People

  • Dell offers 14 different employee resource groups (ERGs) to help instill an inclusive culture. As of December 2016, 23% of team members are engaged in employee resource groups. Pride, Dell’s ERG for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender team members and allies, is one of the fastest-growing ERGs. Much of that growth came through new chapters in Asia and Latin America, locations where identifying as LGBT is not always widely accepted. In APJ, Dell launched the Sydney chapter of Pride employee resource group – the first chapter in the region. Its success led to the launch of a remote chapter to meet immediate demand from others in the region outside of Australia.
  • Dell further expanded its flexible work programs to Dell EMC team members, encouraging eligible employees to work where, how and when it is most productive for them. Dell’s goal is to increase global participation to 50% by 2020.
  • Dell continued to be recognised as an Employer of Choice, garnering awards in over 20 countries. In November 2016, Dell launched its first employee survey as a combined company, with positive results: 82% of team members said they felt inspired, exceeding the goal of 75%.
  • More than 40 volunteers from Dell EMC in India mentored teams at the world’s biggest hackathon, Smart India Hackathon 2017, organised by India’s Ministry of Human Resources and Development. The event saw 32,000 students work on more than 600 problems provided by India’s government, with first and second place going to teams mentored by Dell engineers.

Environment

  • Dell exceeded the initial Dell 2020 goal of using 50 million pounds of sustainable materials in its products and adjusted the goal to use 100 million pounds of recycled-content plastic and other sustainable materials.
  • Dell began shipping the XPS 13 2-in-1 in packaging made from ocean-bound plastics and made a public commitment to increase annual usage 10x by 2025 as well as open source Dell’s supply chain to encourage broad use of ocean plastics by other companies.
  • Dell has recovered 1.8 billion pounds of electronics, 88% of the way toward its 2020 goal to recycle 2 billion pounds of used electronics by 2020.
  • Dell Malaysia celebrated Earth Day 2017 with a series of activities such as the #ShoreUp initiative where over 300 team members volunteered in cleaning up local beaches in Port Dickson, and Monkey Beach and along trails located in the Penang National Park.
  • Dell gave team members the opportunity to select where they wanted a tree planted to commemorate the first day as an integrated company. More than 41,000 employees participated and Dell added additional trees to bring the total number planted up above 140,000. Many team members chose to have theirs planted in Indonesia (in areas to support the Malaysian Tiger’s habitat) via WWF.

 Supply Chain

  • Dell expanded transparency into supply chain operations through the release of the semiannual Social and Environmental Responsibility (SER) Progress Report, which describes supply chain performance on Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC) audits and other initiatives.
  • Dell also introduced new supply chain sub-goals focused on EICC audits, emissions reporting and water risk mitigation plans to help drive responsible actions amongst suppliers.
  • In APJ, Dell is also providing joint management trainings to suppliers in partnership with other leading IT companies, for example in Malaysia and Singapore, to build awareness and help identify strategies related to forced labor and human trafficking.

Grab Delivering Happyness To Underprivileged Kids

6 December 2016Grab wants to make December a little merrier for everyone through its latest regional donation campaign. Called Grab Delivering Happyness, the campaign is calling for members of public to get into the spirit of year-end giving.

All they have to do is to round up and pack pre-loved (or new!) books, stationery and toys – and then simply book a Grab to collect them from 12 to 24 December. Grab aims to collect 20,000 items across Southeast Asia, which will be delivered to 7,000 underprivileged kids in Southeast Asia.

“While people may wish to help the less fortunate, they often don’t know how, or where to start. As part of Grab’s commitment to improving lives in Southeast Asia, we’re using the Grab app to make giving as easy as possible – and in the process, deliver happiness to the children in our communities who need it most,” said Cheryl Goh, VP of Marketing, Grab.

Cheryl Goh added, “I grew up reading the adventures of Nancy Drew. She was a real problem-solver! I always try to find solutions and attribute my never-say-die spirit to my hours of reading. Today we read of young wizards bravely fighting the dark lord, instilling in kids a sense of justice and morals. Grab wants to call out to those who have the means to donate books, stationery and toys. Let’s bring the joy of reading stories to thousands of kids in Southeast Asia – and give them a great foundation for learning life skills.”

Grab has partnered with non-profit organisations – in all six countries that Grab operates in: Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam – that focus on helping children in need. Each tackle issues unique to each country, such as helping to re-equip schools in the Philippines that were affected by a recent storm, or giving books, stationery and toys to kids in rural villages in Vietnam.

In Malaysia, Grab is partnering with NGOHub, an online platform that assists the non-profit sector in Malaysia through the power of volunteering, networking, grant opportunities and events.

NGOHub runs NGO Academy, which is a series of events to impart skills, build capacity and encourage collaboration among NGOs. As such, they form partnerships with different stakeholders including government agencies, the private sector and volunteers to support the work of NGOs in Malaysia to make better and more lasting impact.

NGOHub was founded by SOLS 24/7 in partnership with 7-Eleven Malaysia through its Community Cares Fund.

 

Join Grab Delivering Happyness Campaign

Delivering Happyness from 12 to 24 December

It’s easy for time-strapped people to donate their books, stationery and toys.

  • Start packing your pre-loved books, stationery and toys today.
  • From 12 to 24 December, donors can use the Grab app to request a Grab driver who will pick up the items. Select the ‘Delivering Happyness’ fleet icon. Just like booking a regular ride, donors need only indicate their pick-up location and time. Grab will sponsor the cost of the collection.
  • Pack your items and pass them to the Grab driver on the agreed date and time.

Delivering Happyness is part of Grab’s commitment to improve lives in Southeast Asia. It is an extension of a similar campaign that was rolled out in 2013 in Malaysia to deliver 2,000 pre-loved books and toys to rural libraries. The campaign was a simple and honest effort to match donors to drivers.

Maxis eKelas CSR Programme Revealed

Last week, Maxis revealed their flagship corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme – Maxis eKelas. Leveraging on the Internet, Maxis eKelas is an after-school digital learning initiative that aims to improve the academic performance of students in the rural and urban poor communities in Malaysia.

 

Maxis eKelas Revealed

The Maxis eKelas offers students in rural and urban poor communities better access to quality education. It does this by giving them access to experienced teachers through live video tutorials, followed by access to highly-interactive digital content. The programme focuses on three critical subjects – Science, Mathematics and English for Form 1, 2 and 3 students.

Maxis had actually completed a pilot run of eKelas for the past one year at ten Pusat Internet 1Malaysia in Kedah, Kelantan, Selangor, Putrajaya, Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan. The pilot Maxis eKelas programme delivered 450 hours of live tutorials to about 1,200 students in the 3 core subjects.

Of course, Maxis eKelas is not just about lessons. To make learning interesting, there are fun and exciting activities like group work, quizzes, competitions, holiday camps and motivational talks. All of these activities are conducted by volunteers from within Maxis.

Maxis eKelas Launched

Yang Bahagia Dato’ Mohd Ali Hanafiah, Chief sector, Communications and Digital Ecosystem Cluster of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) officially launched the Maxis eKelas programme, with 45 eKelas students from the pilot run in attendance.

Following its launch, the Maxis eKelas programme will be extended to all 118 Pusat Internet 1Malaysia under Maxis’ care. Maxis aims to reach 100,000 students over the next 5 years through this initiative.

“Education is important. It allows us to equip our children to thrive in the future and give them the highest chance to live up to their fullest potential.  Through technology we will be able to provide students with interactive educational support and eKelas is making remote learning a reality for students. We are proud to be the first company to bring e-learning as a structured, after-school learning programme to Pusat Internet 1Malaysia,” said Mariam Bevi Batcha, Maxis’ Head of Corporate Affairs.

Samsung Love And Care Outreach In Cambodia

Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 28 October 2016 – For the second year running, volunteers from across Samsung Electronics’ Southeast Asia and Oceania offices participated in Samsung Love and Care, the company’s annual regional employee volunteer programme.

In line with Samsung’s continued commitment to create positive differences in communities, the programme harnessed technology and other resources to address pressing educational gaps and social issues in Phnom Penh, Cambodia this year.

 

Samsung Love and Care

As part of Samsung’s annual Global Volunteer Festival, the Samsung Love and Care programme involves employee volunteers from all across the region. Kicking off on 24 October 2016, a total of 56 volunteers reached out to more than 2,800 children in the local Cambodia community over the course of three days.

“At Samsung, we are always committed to go beyond business achievements and to contribute back to the communities. Following last year’s success and earnest positive feedback from volunteers, we are excited to be in Cambodia this year for this meaningful initiative. We believe that technology can go a long way in empowering youths. By addressing the local needs and focusing on the children’s well being, we want to make a positive difference. For our employees, this is our chance to give our best to the community in Cambodia,” said Irene Ng, Vice President, Corporate Marketing, Samsung Southeast Asia and Oceania.

Together with non-governmental organisations Pour Un Sourire D’enfant (PSE) and People Improvement Organisation (PIO), Samsung’s volunteers organised educational and interactive activities for the Cambodian children, building ties and bringing joy to the community. Using Samsung tablets and mobile learning apps, the volunteers bonded with the children over interactive learning games, teaching them numerical and literacy skills. Volunteers also helped with simple refurbishments for the schools, such as giving a fresh coat of paint for the classroom walls and tables. Tree planting – where the children were taught how to care for the environment – and cultural exchange were other notable highlights of the programme.

“We are very grateful for Samsung’s support in outreach efforts towards the underprivileged children of Cambodia. It is inspiring to see such remarkable effort and enthusiasm from the volunteers, dedicated to making a positive change. The use of technology is certainly pivotal in addressing the challenges that we usually face in providing education to the kids, and it magnifies the positive impact that we have made,” said Madam Elisabeth Bardon-Debats, Interim General Director Board Member of PSE.

“Our children really enjoyed themselves very much as they interacted with the volunteers. This is a rare chance as they hardly get to meet people from other countries, and learn from other cultures. We hope to work with Samsung in the long run, to continue providing for the children,” said Ms. Phymean Noun, Founder/CEO of People Improvement Organisation, PIO.

Ongoing Citizenship Outreach Efforts in Cambodia

In addition to the Samsung Love and Care programme, Samsung is also driving a pipeline of community initiatives in Cambodia. Samsung sees education as the seed of innovation and works to create programmes that support youth education and job training through the use of our technology, services and expertise. In line with this approach, Samsung Cambodia has participated in three citizenship initiatives over the past few years:

Samsung Tech Institute

Established in 2014, the Samsung Cambodia Tech Institute is a vocational training institution where young people can learn fundamental IT and engineering skills. It was created to help provide youth with the opportunities to create a better future for themselves and to address the industry shortage of technical talents. To date, the Samsung Cambodia Tech Institute has trained over 190 students, providing them with the best in-class training environment and practical lessons, all in order to prepare them for the workforce.

Fairy Tale Book Donation for Kids

In a bid to cultivate good reading habits in children in primary school, Samsung Cambodia donated 5,000 fairy tale books to the Ministry of Education, which were then deployed to primary schools within the different provinces. This initiative was created due to the lack of adequate reading materials for children still in primary school and to date, over 15,000 students from 50 different primary schools in Cambodia have benefited from this initiative.

Supporting the Angkor Wat conservation project

Samsung Cambodia also partnered the National Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap (APSARA), to aid in the conservation of the temples of Angkor Wat. With the launch of the Galaxy J Series in Cambodia, Samsung Cambodia localised the devices to include a picture of the temples of Angkor Wat on the boxes, along with an Angkor Wat theme for the phone. Additionally, Samsung Cambodia will contribute KHR10,000 (US$2.50) to APSARA for every unit sold. Contributions from the sale of the Galaxy J Series are expected to reach US$100,000 by December 2016.

MAXIS Volunteers Build Homes For Orang Asli

Kuala Lumpur, 21 October 2016 – More than 60 volunteers comprising employees of Maxis and its media agencies built a brand new home each for two Orang Asli families from Perkampungan Orang Asli Serendah, Rawang, Selangor. Held in two sessions from 19-21 August and 26-28 August, the volunteers got down to a full day’s work to build each of the homes from the ground up, with guidance from building specialists provided by EPIC Homes.

The home building project is part of the ‘Maxis Kongsi Home’ launched earlier this year, where Maxis teamed up with Malaysia’s top online shopping destinations and EPIC Homes to create an innovative new way to crowdfund homes for families without a safe place to live. Online shoppers simply needed to visit these shopping sites to purchase building materials for community home-building projects by EPIC Homes.

It was an unforgettable experience for these passionate volunteers to say the least. Here’s what some of the Maxis volunteers had to say:

  • “It was an amazing experience to be part of a team doing something that is not only fun and educational, but one that actually made a huge change in someone’s life. It shows what creativity and passion can do when blended with energy and enthusiasm,” said Adzhar Ibrahim who is also Maxis’ Head of People & Organisation.
  • “I think this is one of the most emotionally connected volunteering programmes I’ve ever been part of. Building this with friends from Maxis was so engaging and the sense of fulfillment is not something that we can get easily in any other CR programs. I definitely look forward to participating in more of this type of initiatives,” said Thum Wei Wen.
  • “It was truly a humbling experience, to see the children smiling and playing around their new home and tears of joy coming from their parents.. I’m just glad to be able to be a part of this new start in their life,” said a humbled Shazmin Ghazali.
  • “Little did I know I would be venturing into one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The camaraderie, enthusiasm passion and dedication to build a new home for a family made the journey an exhilarating and memorable one,” said Kunal Gupta.

Samsung Nanum Village II 2016 Initiative At Kg Tual

Kuala Lumpur, 30 September 2016 – It was a memorable experience for the community in Kg Tual, Pos Sinderut, Kuala Lipis, Pahang – receiving solar panels and other domestic items as part of Samsung Malaysia Electronics’ second Nanum Village initiative. The brand’s Corporate Citizenship effort is aimed to improve the livelihood of the underserved by providing services and utilities that can ease their daily routines.

“Nanum means sharing in Korean. We at Samsung believe in our responsibility of sharing and sustaining social development and supporting communities around the world. With the tagline “Hope for Tomorrow” at the heart of the Samsung Nanum Village II 2016 initiative, we sincerely hope that our efforts will make a change in the lives of the locals of Kg Tual in the long run. We will also continue with such initiatives to promote sustainable social development and support communities around Malaysia,” said Mr. Lee Sang Hoon, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

 

Samsung Nanum Village II Initiative

The Samsung Nanum Village II initiative was a joint effort with the Public Sector, Ministry of Higher Education via Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and solar panel manufacturer Hanwha Q-Cells. The 24 solar panels were contributed to Pusat Didikan Komuniti (PDK) of Kg Tual to generate 10kWh of electricity and help the community improve their socio-economic status by upgrading their electricity supply.

Additionally, Samsung donated stationary sets and Samsung tablets equipped with English learning content for their classroom as part of the company’s effort in increasing literacy rate among the locals.

A total of 51 Samsung employees and their partners, led by Dato’ Roh Jae Yeol, Director of Corporate Affairs, volunteered to visit the village to share their love and care to the community. Among the fun activities done with the locals as part of the one-day program included tree planting, simple English classes, sand art activity, telematch games, signage installation and a tooth brushing activity with the children for health awareness.

Other items donated included lights and fans which were installed in the community centre, sports equipment, and food and body care products to each family, estimated to be 100 families.

The Samsung Nanum Village program was initiated at Kg Tual last year as part of the brand’s local Corporate Citizenship effort.

Dell 2016 Legacy of Good Plan

Kuala Lumpur, 21 June 2016 – Dell today reported significant progress against its 2020 Legacy of Good plan and the company’s 21 goals in support of the environment, communities and Dell team members. Dell has a long-term commitment to putting its technology and expertise to work where they can do the most good for people and the planet. The full report, which includes Dell Malaysia, summarises its efforts in its Fiscal Year 2016 (February 1, 2015 – January 31, 2016).

“Dell’s global business strategy is guided by the idea that technology should support positive growth and change the world for the better,” Trisa Thompson, Chief Responsibility Officer at Dell. “We will continue to strive to reach our 2020 goals and inspire positive change worldwide.”

 

Global Environmental Footprint Progress

  • Dell facilities in Malaysia installed new or upgraded energy monitoring and management systems, allowing the company to track the energy use of specific pieces of equipment, identify maintenance problems, and discover opportunities for tuning equipment to reduce energy consumption.
  • In Asia, we collected 15.4 million pounds of obsolete electronics through our takeback efforts.
  • Last year, Dell used a total of 14.1 million pounds of recycled plastics in Dell products, a 20.5 percent increase from the previous year, bringing the company to a total of 36.2 million pounds of sustainable materials used since the start of FY14.
  • 416 of Dell’s products met various ENERGY STAR standards last year, representing approximately 90 percent of their eligible products.
  • As of FY16, approximately 93 percent of Dell packaging (by weight) is sustainably sourced and easily recyclable or compostable. Sustainable sourcing and box size reductions saved Dell US$13 million in FY16 and US$65.9 million since 2009.
  • Last year, Dell sourced 41 percent of its electricity needs from renewably generated sources.
  • Dell is driving better social and environmental practices in our supply chain in part through 72 percent more audits and increased trainings last year.
  • In FY16, Dell trained 50 suppliers with the highest water use and/or risk on how to publish a five-year water risk mitigation plan (all 50 have one in place now).
  • From FY15 to FY16, Dell saw an 18.6 percent decrease in Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transport and distribution of select Dell products worldwide.
  • Since FY14, Dell’s flexible work solutions have saved the company US$39.5 million and the company has avoided an estimated 25 million kWh of energy and 13,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions (as CO2e).

Community Impact

  • Dell’s partnership, funding and technology enables Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) to analyse the 90 billion data points of sequenced genomes in eight hours rather than weeks, looking for mutations that can aid in identifying which treatment protocols to follow. Dell worked with 10 NGOs in 8 countries, including Malaysia, to support the needs of families and children affected by pediatric cancer.
  • Since 2013, Dell has provided access to technology and twenty-first century skills for 1.6 million underserved children around the world via its Youth Learning programmes. Dell surveyed 320,000 participants and discovered half were using technology for the first time because of a Youth Learning programme.
  • In its FY16, Dell installed six new solar-powered Dell Learning Labs in South Africa and in early FY17 opened one in Cazuca, Colombia, bringing the total to 11 labs in remote communities.
  • Last year, Dell team members provided 811,000 hours of volunteer time to more than 26,000 local organisations around the world.

 

People & Diversity

  • Last year, Dell expanded its official Connected Workplace programme to 73 sites in 29 countries, with 25 percent of eligible team members enrolled worldwide. Malaysia was one of the first countries to implement the Connected Workplace programme.
  • Dell has spent more than US$3 billion annually with diverse suppliers for the last four years.
  • FY16 was Dell’s second year promoting Men Advocating Real Change (MARC), an initiative for men and women leaders committed to creating a more inclusive workplace. In total, 242 Dell executives participated in the programme (36 percent of Dell executives).
  • Up till 2015, Dell Malaysia has collected and donated more than RM1.5 million to various charities through its annual family day and charity run programme.
  • Number of Employee Resource Group (ERG) chapters in APJ doubled from 27 to 54 last year.
  • The Dell APJ region had the highest volunteer participation rates (67 percent) last year.

Microsoft Philanthropies Donates US$1 Billion In Resources

DAVOS-KLOSTERS, Switzerland — Jan. 19, 2016 Microsoft Corp. CEO Satya Nadella announced a new three-part initiative to ensure that Microsoft’s cloud computing resources serve the public good. As part of this initiative the recently formed Microsoft Philanthropies will donate $1 billion of Microsoft Cloud Services, measured at fair market value, to serve nonprofits and university researchers over the next three years.

 

Microsoft Philanthropies Donates US$1 Billion In Resources

Microsoft’s three-part commitment focuses on ensuring the cloud can serve the public good in the broadest sense by providing additional cloud resources to nonprofits, increasing access for university researchers and helping solve last-mile Internet access challenges.

“Microsoft is empowering mission-driven organizations around the planet with a donation of cloud computing services — the most transformative technologies of our generation,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who on Wednesday will speak at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “Now more than 70,000 organizations will have access to technology that will help them solve our greatest societal challenges and ultimately improve the human condition and drive new growth equally.”

Cloud computing has emerged as a vital resource for unlocking the secrets held by data in ways that create new insights and lead to breakthroughs not just for science and technology, but for the full range of economic and social challenges and the delivery of better human services. It can also improve communications and problem-solving and help organizations work in a more productive and more efficient manner.

In September 2015, 193 heads of state and other world leaders unanimously adopted 17 sustainable development goals to achieve by 2030. This ambitious agenda — which includes ending poverty, ending hunger, and ensuring affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for all — will only be achievable with the benefit of significant inventions and technology innovations. The scale and computational power enabled by cloud computing will be essential to unlocking solutions to this list of some of the world’s seemingly unsolvable problems.

“We’re committed to helping nonprofit groups and universities use cloud computing to address fundamental human challenges,” said Microsoft President Brad Smith. “One of our ambitions for Microsoft Philanthropies is to partner with these groups and ensure that cloud computing reaches more people and serves the broadest array of societal needs.”

Specific elements of the new initiative include these:

  • Serving the broad needs of the nonprofit community. A new global donation program will make Microsoft Cloud Services, including Microsoft Azure, Power BI, CRM Online and the Enterprise Mobility Suite, more available to nonprofit organizations through Microsoft Philanthropies. The program builds upon an already successful program that provides similar access to Office 365 for nonprofits. The nonprofit program for Microsoft Cloud Services will begin rolling out this spring, and Microsoft Philanthropies aims to serve 70,000 nonprofits in the next three years with these Microsoft Cloud Services.
  • Expanding access to cloud resources for faculty research in universities. Microsoft Research and Microsoft Philanthropies will expand by 50 percent the Microsoft Azure for Research program that grants free Azure storage and computing resources to help faculty accelerate their research on cutting-edge challenges. Today this program provides free cloud computing resources for over 600 research projects on six continents.
  • Reaching new communities with last-mile connectivity and cloud services. Microsoft Philanthropies and Microsoft Business Development will combine donated access to Microsoft Cloud services with investments in new, low-cost last-mile Internet access technologies and community training. By combining cloud services with connectivity and training, and focusing on new public-private partnerships, Microsoft Philanthropies intends to support 20 of these projects in at least 15 countries around the world by the middle of 2017.

Providing nonprofits with better access to Microsoft Cloud Services, including the powerful Microsoft Azure platform, builds upon Microsoft’s longtime commitment to making cutting-edge technology available at no or low cost to organizations working on solving some of society’s toughest problems.

In recent years, as organizations have increased their reliance on cloud computing, Microsoft has worked in partnership with a broad range of organizations focused on big challenges. The initiatives show the potential impact that increased access to the transformational power of cloud computing can have:

  • Microsoft Research is working with the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) Biodiversity Research Program through the use of 700 wireless sensors, cloud technology and automated data-stream processing to understand how cloud forests work and study the impact of climate changes on the communities supported by those forests.
  • [adrotate group=”2″]Through a partnership with the University of Texas at Austin called Project Catapult, Microsoft makes advanced cloud computing technology available to researchers that have demonstrated the ability to deliver lower power and cost, higher-quality results, or a combination of both.
  • In Botswana, Microsoft is partnering with the Botswana Innovation Hub, Vista Life Sciences, the United States Agency for International Development and Global Broadband Solutions to assist Botswana, the University of Pennsylvania and the Ministry of Health in leveraging cloud-based health records management and Internet access enabled by use of TV white spaces to remotely deliver specialized medicine, including cervical cancer screenings to women at rural healthcare clinics.

“Access to technology is critical to the operations and services of NetHope and its 44 humanitarian nonprofit member organizations,” said NetHope CEO Lauren Woodman. “The power of cloud computing will create exponential value for all we do to serve the millions of people in our communities around the world.”
