Samsung Galaxy A54 : Key Features

Now, let us go through its key features, and show you why the Samsung Galaxy A54 is worthy of our Editor’s Choice Award!

Samsung Exynos 1380 5G Mobile Platform

The Samsung Galaxy A54 is built around the Samsung Exynos 1380 mobile SoC, which is fabricated with Samsung’s own 5 nm EUV process technology.

It comes with an Arm Mali-G68 MP5 GPU, and an NPU, as well as eight CPU cores arranged in two performance clusters:

  • 4 x Arm Cortex-A78 cores (2.4 GHz)
  • 4 x Arm Cortex-A55 cores (2.0 GHz)

The Samsung Exynos 1380 has an integrated 5G modem that supports Sub-6GHz and mmWave standards, as well as LTE Cat.18 uploads and downloads for current 4G networks.

It also supports Wi-Fi 802.11ax (2×2 MIMO) with triple-band capability, as well as Bluetooth 5.3. It supports the four main GPS networks – GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galile.

6.4-inch Super AMOLED Display

The Samsung Galaxy A54 boasts a large 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display, with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels.

This display defaults to a 60 Hz refresh rate, but supports a 120 Hz refresh rate that offers smoother graphics at the expense of higher power consumption.

Unlike higher-end smartphones like the new Galaxy S23 Ultra, the display does not dynamically changes its refresh rate. It either runs at 60 Hz or 120 Hz.

32 MP Front Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A54 comes with a high-resolution 32 MP front camera with f/2.2 aperture. Instead of hiding it in a discreet punch hole, it has a stainless steel ring.

This camera defaults to 8 MP by default, combining four pixels into one much larger pixel for better image quality and low-light performance.

This 32 MP camera is capable of recording 1080p video at 30 fps or 60 fps, as well as 4K video at 30 fps.

50 MP Main Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A54 comes with a triple camera system at the back that consists of:

  • a 50 MP main camera, with f/1.8 aperture,
  • a 12 MP ultra-wide angle camera, with f/2.2 aperture, and
  • a 5 MP macro camera, with f/2.4 aperture

The 50 MP camera is a “downgrade” in megapixels from the Galaxy A53’s 64 MP camera, but its image quality is better because it is built around the Sony IMX766 image sensor used in phones like the realme 9 Pro+ and Xiaomi 12.

The Sony IMX766 is a larger 1/1.56″ sensor, which offers a 25% larger pixel size of 1.0 µm (compared to 0.8 µm). The larger pixel size is important as it means each pixel can receive 25% more light, delivering better images, especially in low-light conditions.

In fact, that is why the Galaxy A54 defaults to the 12.5 MP resolution, combining four pixels into a much larger 2 µm “bucket” to collect more light. The 64 MP camera in last year’s Galaxy A53 also does the same thing, combining four pixels in one to deliver 16 MP photos.

This 50 MP camera supports PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus), and its lens has a wide f/1.8 aperture for better light intake. If you like to record videos, you will be glad to know that it features VDIS (Video Digital Image Stabilisation) and improved OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) offering a wider OIS angle.

Corning Gorilla Glass 5

The Samsung Galaxy A54 is protected in the front and in the back by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. While this was introduced back in July 2016, it still offers considerable protection.

In lab tests, it can survive drops on hard, rough surface from a height of up to 1.2 metres. It also offers 2X better scratch protection compared to its competitors.

IP67 Dust + Water Resistance

The Samsung Galaxy A54 is IP67 rated against the ingress of dust and water. This means it can withstand being immersed in up to 1 metre of water for at least 30 minutes.

Hybrid SIM + micro SD Tray

The Samsung Galaxy A54 comes with a hybrid tray that supports up to two physical SIM cards, or a physical SIM card as well as a single micro SD card of up to 1 TB in capacity

USB Type C Port

The Samsung Galaxy A54 comes with the bidirectional Type C port, which is now the EU standard.

5,000 mAh Fast-Charging Battery

The Samsung Galaxy A54 comes with a large 5,000 mAh lithium-ion polymer battery, which supports 25 watt fast wired charging. It does not support wireless charging, or reverse charging.

Samsung Galaxy A54 : Battery Life Comparison!

The Samsung Galaxy A54 comes with a 5,000 mAh battery, which is the same size as the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Ultra.

To test its battery life, we turned off Automatic Brightness, and set its display brightness to 50%.

Why 50%? That is actually slightly higher than the average indoor brightness level of 40% during the day, and is what we usually use in all our mobile battery life tests.

It is important to fix the brightness level, to make sure the screen brightness does not change as the ambient brightness changes.

We then ran the PCMark Work 3.0 battery life test until its battery capacity dropped to 20% several times, and this was the best result we obtained with 60 Hz and 120 Hz refresh rates :

Not bad at all! The Samsung Galaxy A54 has a battery life of 12.5 hours with Adaptive refresh rate enabled, and almost 14 hours with the Standard refresh rate. That’s equal to the Galaxy S22 Ultra at the Standard refresh rate, and 16.7% better at the Adaptive refresh rate.

But let’s also compare its battery life at 60 Hz and 120 Hz, against the S23 Ultra, S22 Ultra and Z Flip 3 smartphones.

Standard Refresh Rate (60 Hz)

The Samsung Galaxy A54 lasted almost 14 hours with the refresh rate set to 60 Hz. But it isn’t quite as efficient as the new S23 Ultra, or even last year’s  S22 Ultra.

Adaptive Refresh Rate (120 Hz)

Will you look at that! The Samsung Galaxy A54 was about 13.6% more efficient than the S22 Ultra with the Adaptive refresh rate enabled, coming within 8% of the power efficiency of the S23 Ultra.

Based on what we see here, I definitely recommend turning on the Adaptive Refresh Rate on the Galaxy A54, unless you absolutely need the extra 1.5 hours of battery life.

Samsung Galaxy A54 : Battery Recharging Speed!

The Samsung Galaxy A54 supports up to 25 watts of wired fast charging, but unfortunately, does not come with the charger in-the-box.

So we relied on the standard 15 watt Samsung fast charger than shipped with their previous smartphones – something we believe most users will end up doing.

Battery Capacity 3,300 mAh 5,000 mAh 5,000 mAh 3,300 mAh

Recharging Speed
(per minute)
62.0 mAh 45.0 mAh 33.1 mAh 29.8 mAh

The Samsung Galaxy A54 fully recharges from 20% to 100% in just over 2 hours with the standard 15 watt Samsung charger. Oddly enough, this is significantly (36%) slower than the S23 Ultra.

I have no idea whether this was an intentional design decision to reduce the Galaxy A54’s thermal output while charging, or to further differentiate it from the much pricier Galaxy S23 Ultra.

In any case, the Galaxy A54 has a good battery life : recharging ratio of 7:1. As a rule of thumb, for every hour of battery life, you only need to recharge it for 8.5 minutes.

Samsung Galaxy A54 : Performance Summary

Built around the Samsung Exynos 1380, the Galaxy A54 smartphone has a very fast CPU, but a relatively weak GPU.

What that means is that it offers snappy performance for most part – web browsing, work applications, casual gaming, etc.

It only has trouble delivering high frame rates for graphics-intensive 3D games, and AI or 3D apps may take longer to process in comparison to flagship devices.

But that’s what you need to keep in mind – the Exynos 1380 is a mid-range mobile platform, not a flagship-class. And it is a fast one.

Samsung Galaxy A54 : Work Performance

We first tested the Galaxy A54 Ultra using PCMark, which simulates work applications like web browsing, playing video, writing text and editing photos.

Will you look at that?! The Samsung Exynos 1380 that powers the Galaxy A54 actually beat Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 which powered the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

It was also just 17.5% slower than the latest flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile SoC that powers the new Galaxy S23 Ultra flagship smartphone!

Very impressive for a mid-range mobile SoC, especially handily beating the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S21 Ultra, and coming in 72% faster than the Galaxy A52.

Samsung Galaxy A54 : Gaming Performance

For gaming, we tested the Galaxy A54 using 3DMark, with these results :

This is where the Samsung Galaxy A54’s Exynos 1380 falls short – it is just not very good at gaming!

It was 23% to 42% slower than the Exynos 990, and 28% to 32% slower than the Snapdragon 888!

That does not mean it’s bad for gaming. It can certainly handle most games. It just won’t be able to deliver high frame rates in graphically-demanding 3D games like Genshin Impact, Black Desert Mobile, etc.

Samsung Galaxy A54 : Overall Performance

We then tested the Galaxy A54 using AnTuTu, yielding these results :

According to the AnTuTu benchmark, the Samsung Galaxy A54 is about 53% faster than the Galaxy A52, and only 16% slower than the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

What’s important to note is that the Exynos 1380’s CPU is fast, coming within 8% of the Exynos 2100. However, it has a relatively weak GPU, and slower memory than the flagship-class mobile platforms in this comparison.

Samsung Galaxy A54 : Camera Performance

The Samsung Galaxy A54’s 50 MP camera takes 12.5 MP photos by default, with a resolution of 4080 x 3060 pixels. Each JPEG photo using the High Efficiency Image File (HEIF) format, each photo is about 2.5 MB to 5 MB in size.

Without HEIF, the file sizes are much larger, so please remember to turn on the HEIF file format to save space.

  1. Open the Camera app
  2. Go to Settings > Advanced picture options
  3. Turn on High efficiency pictures.

As this photo sample shows, the 50 MP main camera of the Samsung Galaxy A54 offers a nice bokeh, thanks to its wide f/1.8 aperture.

However, that wide aperture presents a problem too – a narrow depth of field, as this sample photo of star anise shows.

If multiple objects are present at different distances from the camera, only some of them will remain in focus, while the others will be out-of-focus.

That makes for nice portraits, but if you do not tap on the area or subject you want to be in focus, the camera may auto-focus on the wrong area or subject, and you will end up with an out-of-focus shot.

As this shot of pineapples show, only a small area of the right edge of the pineapple on the left is in focus. That’s because I intentionally tapped on that part.

Otherwise, the camera would naturally focus on the nearest part of the pineapple (its centre, which is located to the far left of the photo) and this photo would look really out-of-focus.

In most cases, the colour reproduction is pretty accurate, even if it’s indoors.

But in some cases, you can end up with pretty dull-looking photos under artificial light.

You need to be careful with close-up shots though. This isn’t a macro camera, and so it has trouble focusing if the subject is too close.

The problem is – the Samsung camera app does not warn you if the 50 MP camera cannot focus properly on the subject. It may look like it is focused properly in the camera app, but when you open it up later, you will see that it’s completely out-of-focus.

I definitely recommend you tapping on the subject to “force” the camera app to visibly try to focus. If it fails, you know that you are much too close. It’s also a good habit to tap to focus anyway, as this 50 MP camera has a narrow depth-of-field.

There is no need to worry about the “loss” in resolution from 64 MP to 50 MP. In most cases, you probably won’t even realise that the camera defaults to just 12.5 MP!

Even at 12.5 MP, there is more than enough detail in the photos that the Galaxy A54’s 50MP camera delivers, even if you want to zoom in.

But that does not mean that its 50 MP sensor is pure marketing. You can use it to take 50 MP shots, but you will have to live with significantly larger file sizes.

The full 50 MP resolution isn’t needed for 90% of the photos that most people take, but it is useful for long-distance shots. The Samsung Galaxy A54 does not have a telephoto camera, so taking photos in 50 MP effectively gives you a 4X zoom capability.

For example, if you need to take a faraway shot of a bell tower, you can switch to 50 MP before taking the photo. Then you can zoom into the 50 MP photo you took and crop out a much closer looking shot of that bell tower without using software or digital zoom.

Samsung Galaxy A54 : Camera Performance Summary

I’m glad Samsung switched from the 64 MP camera to a 50 MP camera in the Galaxy A54. The “loss” in megapixels is more than made up by the larger and better Sony IMX766 image sensor, with 25% larger pixels.

This improved 50 MP main camera performed well in our tests, generally delivering good photos with accurate colours in most cases. It has a good level of detail, even at 12.5 MP.

The biggest problem I have with it is its minimum focus distance. The camera seems to work best with subjects that are at least 50 cm away, or so. If I get too close to the subject, the shot ends up out-of-focus, especially if I tried to let the camera auto-focus by itself.

This is not readily apparent in the camera app, so you need to tap to focus. That triggers the camera to seek a better focus. That’s when you can see whether it can really focus properly. Even then, I sometimes end up with out-of-focus shots, because I was simply too close to the subject.

For most people, this won’t a problem if you are taking the usual photos – people standing at a distance, landscapes and buildings at a distance, etc. Just keep this in mind if you are taking close shots of products or food, etc.

Samsung Galaxy A54 : Summary + Award

The Samsung Galaxy A54 is proof that you don’t need to pay top dollar to get a great smartphone. For less than half the cost of a flagship smartphone, it offers most of the features that you need, in a well-protected device.

It comes with a large, excellent Super AMOLED display which supports 120 Hz refresh rate, and is protected on both front and rear by Gorilla Glass 5. It is also IP67-rated against the ingress of dust and water.

Built around the 5 nm Samsung Exynos 1380 mobile platform, the Galaxy A54 offers excellent performance in work apps, offering the equivalent performance as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

However, it falters when it comes to gaming. Its weaker Arm Mali-G68 MP5 GPU just cannot keep up with the better GPUs used in flagship-class smartphones. That doesn’t mean you can’t game on it. You can – it can certainly handle most games. It just won’t do as well as flagship-class smartphones in graphics-intensive games.

When it comes to photography, it comes with high-resolution 32 MP front camera, as well as a new 50 MP Sony IMX766 camera at the back, and an ultra-wide-angle camera, and a macro camera.

The 50 MP main camera is generally excellent, except under certain indoor lighting where the photos appear washed out. It also has trouble focusing at closer distances, which is probably why Samsung added the macro camera, which would normally be a waste of time for most users.

While I miss the telephoto camera which is a fixture in flagship smartphones, the 12 MP ultra-wide angle camera is arguably a better trade-off – most people would prefer to use it for landscape and group shots, rather than take long-distance shots with the telephoto camera.

The Galaxy A54 takes pretty good videos too, but there are some limitations :

  • it can support 30/60 fps @ 1080p, but only 30 fps for 4K video recording,
  • it is limited to 30 fps, regardless of resolution, when using its ultra-wide angle camera.
  • it can only support video image stabilisation at 30 fps, but not 60 fps

If you really love taking videos at 4K especially at 60 fps or higher, then these limitations will be a deal breaker. Video recording is where flagship devices like the Galaxy S23 Ultra shines.

But for many people, the Samsung Galaxy A54 offers an excellent combination of features and capabilities at a far lower cost. On top of that, you get two years of warranty, three years of Android updates, and four years of security updates.

For these reasons, we gladly award the Samsung Galaxy A54 our Editor’s Choice Award! Great work, Samsung!

But that’s how most of the brands are rolling these days, in the name of reducing digital waste, so we won’t hold it against them.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra : Key Features

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is arguably the largest and most powerful tablet you can buy in 2022, so let’s take a closer look at its key features.

14.6-inch Super AMOLED Display

This first thing that you will notice when you see the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra for the first time, is just how large and beautiful its display really is.

That is a 14.6-inch Super AMOLED display you are looking at – larger than the display on most laptops; with a WQXGA+resolution of 2960 x 1848 pixels, and support for two fixed refresh rates :

  • High : Get smoother animations and scrolling with a 120 Hz screen refresh rate
  • Standard : Get longer battery life with a 60 Hz screen refresh rate

This large, high-resolution display allows you to fit multiple windows, and open different apps at the same time, for greater productivity.

This display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and also by the bundled Keyboard Cover when it’s not in use.

Flagship Class Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 runs on the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform, which boasts a powerful Adreno 730 GPU, as well as eight processor cores in a triple-tier architecture :

  • a Cortex-X2 prime core running at up to 3 GHz,
  • three sustained-performance Cortex-A710 cores running at up to 2.4 GHz, and
  • four energy-efficient Cortex-A510 cores running at 1.7 GHz.

Those eight processor cores are paired with a powerful Qualcomm Adreno 730 graphics processor.

Performance is not only the key advantage of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Built on the latest 4 nm process technology, it also offers lower battery consumption.

We will show you just how fast it runs in the benchmarks, and how efficient it is, later in this review.

RAM + Storage Options

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra comes with a variety of RAM and storage options :

  • 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage
  • 12 GB RAM + 256 GB / 512 GB storage
  • 16 GB RAM + 256 GB / 512 GB storage

You don’t have to worry too much about running out of storage, as it comes with a microSD card slot, allowing you to add up to 1 TB of additional storage.

Two Front Cameras

Catering to the new hybrid workspace reality today, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra comes with two cameras in the front.

Both 12 MP cameras, one has a wider f/2.2 aperture for better low-light performance, while the other supports a wider angle – to fit more people in the same photo / video call.

Two Rear Cameras

This is a really large and hefty tablet, so you wouldn’t expect photography to be a focus. However, it still comes with two cameras at the back.

The main camera has a 12 MP sensor, with a wide f/2.0 aperture for better low-light performance.

It also comes with an ultra-wide camera at the back, but oddly enough, only with a 6 MP sensor.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra : S Pen, Book Cover, Speakers, Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is more than just a tablet, because it comes with both an S Pen stylus, and a Book Cover Keyboard.

Ultra-Low Latency S Pen

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra comes with a new S Pen with ultra-low latency of just 2.8 milliseconds!

This is a full-size stylus that feels like a typical pen or pencil, letting you draw and doodle with up to 4,096 pressure levels!

You can also write naturally with the S Pen, and turn your handwriting into text in Samsung Notes.

The S Pen magnetically locks onto a glass strip at the back, which acts as a recharging dock. The S Pen automatically recharges whenever you place it on this glass strip.

Don’t worry about losing it with the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, because it comes with a Book Cover Keyboard that has a special cover for the S Pen!

Book Cover Keyboard

This year, Samsung included the really awesome Book Cover Keyboard with every Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra tablet.

This cover not only provides really solid protection for the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, it also converts it into a 2-in-1 tablet with a kickstand!

You don’t just get a full-size keyboard with the Book Cover Keyboard, you also get a large touch pad! This really gives you a laptop-like working experience.

In addition, the Book Cover Keyboard has a special S Pen cover that prevents your precious S Pen from falling and getting lost.

As I shared in my Galaxy Tab S7 Book Cover Keyboard review last year, this is a must-have accessory, and I’m really glad Samsung included it as part of the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra package.

Quad AKG-Tuned Speakers

Another premium Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra feature that Samsung does not really speak much of is the quad speaker system tuned by AKG.

They are not only powerful, they deliver really crisp sound from this tablet. They are also positioned to radiate from both sides with the Book Cover Keyboard installed.

Large Battery

To power all that, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra comes with a large 11,200 mAh lithium-ion battery.

It supports 45 watt fast recharging, but as pointed out earlier – it doesn’t come with any charger, so your mileage in this sense really depends on the charger you have.

In the next section, we will show you just how long this battery lasts, and how long it takes to recharge this massive battery!

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra : Battery Life Comparison!

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra comes with a massive 11,200 mAh battery, which is more than the size of the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s battery!

Astoundingly, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra only has a battery life of 6.5 hours with High refresh rate enabled, and a more acceptable 8 hours with the Standard refresh rate!

This is a slight improvement over last year’s Galaxy Tab S7 Plus. There is no doubt that its much larger 14.6-inch Super AMOLED display is a significant drain on battery life.

Let’s compare its battery life against the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra smartphone which uses the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile SoC.

Standard Refresh Rate (60 Hz)

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra delivers the best battery life with the Standard refresh rate of 60 Hz.

The Tab S8 Ultra appears to use 9% more power than the Tab S7 Plus, but I have to point out that it has a 39% larger display.

Fortunately, the battery life deficit is “covered” by its 11% larger battery.

High Refresh Rate (120 Hz)

Switching on the High refresh rate of 120 Hz cut its battery life by 17.6% – almost 1.5 hours!

But the data shows that its larger 14.6-inch display only used 3.4% more power than the Tab S7 Plus.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra : Battery Recharging Speed!

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra supports up to 45 watts of wired fast charging, but unfortunately, does not come with the charger in-the-box.

So we relied on the standard 15 watt Samsung fast charger than shipped with their previous smartphones and tablets – something we believe most users will end up doing.

Recharging Speed Tab S8 Ultra Tab S7 Plus S22 Ultra

Battery Life 86.5 mins 86 mins 64.5 mins
Recharging Speed

Interestingly, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra recharged faster with a standard 15 watt charger, than the Tab S7 Plus or even the Galaxy S22 Ultra!

This is really good news. It means that Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra owners need not worry too much about its recharging speed with the older 15 watt chargers.

In fact, you don’t need to splurge on a new 45 watt fast charger. The Tab S8 Ultra fully recharges its massive battery from 20% to 100% in just under 1.5 hours with the standard 15 watt Samsung charger!

Surprisingly, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Get 1 was slightly slower than the Snapdragon 888 used by the Galaxy Z Flip 3, but the difference was just 7%, which means you won’t actually notice the difference.

For certainly, it will easily handle anything you throw at it, whether it’s just posting your latest Instagram pictures or editing a 4K video.

The AnTuTu benchmark confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is a veritable beast of a performer, beating even the very fast Galaxy Z Flip 3 by 36%.

Its GPU performance was, in particular, spectacular, delivering 72% better performance than the Galaxy Z Flip 3, and 81% better performance than the Galaxy Tab S7+!

Interestingly, it was 7% faster than the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which uses the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. This is likely due to better cooling – its temperature only increased by 0.3°C, whereas the S22 Ultra’s temperature spiked by over 10°C!

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra : Verdict + Award

The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra was meant to be the ultimate Samsung tablet for 2022, and it does not disappoint.

The display is a magnificently large and beautiful 14.6-inch Super AMOLED panel, which offers an expansive amount of space to play and work with.

Built around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 – the fastest mobile SoC that exists for Android devices – you can count on the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra to easily handle anything and everything you throw at it.

It also has surprisingly good battery life – delivering over 8 hours of non-stop use at 60 Hz, and over 6.5 hours at 120 Hz; despite sporting such a large display.

It also offers very good recharging speed, even using the standard 15 watt fast charger. So you don’t really need to invest in expensive 45 watt chargers.

But beyond those hardware features, what I really like is how the Samsung offer a complete experience by bundling the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra with not just the S Pen, but also the Book Cover Keyboard.

The ultra-low latency S Pen gives you the premium pen-on-paper like experience working on a tablet, while the Book Cover Keyboard gives you a laptop experience. You literally have the best of both worlds in a single box!

If you want the best-possible Android tablet money can buy, you can’t do wrong with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra.

In fact, we like this premium tablet so much, we are giving it our Editor’s Choice Award!

POCO X3 NFC : Powered By New Snapdragon 732G!

The POCO X3 NFC was just unveiled – the first smartphone to be built around the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G mobile platform!

Here’s what you need to know about the new POCO X3 NFC smartphone, including its price, deals and specifications!

POCO X3 NFC : Powered By New Snapdragon 732G!

Built around the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G mobile platform, the POCO X3 NFC smartphone promises to deliver high-end gaming performance at a fraction of the usual cost.

Gaming Performance

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G has two high speed Kryo 470 cores, with six low-powered cores, and an Adreno 618 Elite Gaming series GPU.

To ensure peak performance even during strenuous gaming sessions, it’s kept cool by an enlarged copper heat pipe with multiple layers of graphite – their LiquidCool Technology 1.0 Plus, which promises to reduce processor temperature by up to 6 degrees.

Complementing its gaming performance is a 120 Hz display with a 240 Hz touch sampling rate, to ensure both silky-smooth gameplay.

Gameplay also becomes more immersive, thanks to its integrated Z-axis linear motor, which delivers over 150 vibration modes for haptic feedback.

Cameras

In the front, the POCO X3 NFC has a 20 MP camera with f/2.2 aperture, with a 4-in-1 Super Pixel capability – combining four pixels for better low-light performance.

In the back, it has a 64 MP main camera using the Sony IMX682 sensor and an f/1.89 aperture. It also supports 4-in-1 Super Pixel, for better low-light performance at ¼ the resolution.

This camera is also supported by a 2 MP depth sensor, to allow for more accurate software bokeh effects.

It also has two other cameras in the back – a 13 MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 aperture, and a 2 MP macro camera, with f/2.4 aperture.

Battery

POCO X3 NFC promises to last up to two days on a single charge, thanks to its large 5,150 mAh. And it supports 33W fast charging, allowing it to be fully recharged in just 65 minutes.

Its increased charging speed is achieved through the Middle Middle Tab (MMT) technology, which delivers power to the battery in the middle, letting the module charge upwards and downwards simultaneously.

This allows for faster and more consistent charging speed, while ensuring better battery longevity, compared to traditional battery layouts.

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about the new Xiaomi Mi Note 10 and Mi Note 10 Pro smartphones!

Xiaomi Mi Note 10 | Note 10 Pro : 108 MP Penta-Camera FTW?

Xiaomi is pulling out all the stops with both models, equipping them with 5 rear cameras, including a 108 MP Samsung HMX camera!

Let’s dive into their key features…

Penta Camera System with 108 MP Main Camera!

Their marquee feature is, without doubt, the penta camera system which consists of :

  • a 108 MP Samsung HMX camera (f/1.69 aperture) with OIS
  • a 12 MP telephoto camera with 2X zoom (f/2.0)

The 108 MP main camera defaults to 27 MP, to ensure maximum image quality in low-light conditions, and smaller file sizes. There is an option to turn on 108 MP if you need the ultra-high resolution.

Incidentally, the Pro version uses a 8P lens design for its 108 MP shooter, while the standard version uses a 7P lens setup.

3D Curved AMOLED Display + Back

Both models come with a large 6.47-inch 3D curved AMOLED edge-to-edge display, with ultra-thin bezels.

Their backs are covered in 3D curved glass for a more comfortable grip and protection. They are protected in the front and back by Gorilla Glass 5.

Performance + Storage

Both models are built around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G, a mid-range mobile SoC which is also used by the Samsung Galaxy A80.

It has two fast Kryo 470 Gold cores at 2.2 GHz, six low-power Kryo 470 Silver cores at 1.7 GHz, and an Adreno 618 GPU running at 700 MHz.

The Mi Note 10 comes with 6 GB LPDDR4x memory, and 128 GB UFS 2.1 storage. The Pro version, on the other hand, has 8 GB LPDDR4x memory and 256 GB UFS 2.1 storage.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 – Everything You Need To Know!

Xiaomi just launched the Redmi Note 8, offering 48 MP photography at ridiculous price points!

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, including its key features, price and availability!

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Revealed!

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 (Lazada | Shopee) builds upon the Redmi Note 7 that was launched just 6.5 months ago, offering a faster and more efficient Snapdragon 665 mobile platform and expanded photographic capabilities.

Join Allen An, Xiaomi Country Manager of Malaysia and Singapore, for his presentation on what’s new!

Same Key Features

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 (Lazada | Shopee) retains many of the Redmi Note 7‘s key features :

  • a large 6.3-inch Dot Drop display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, and 84% NTSC gamut
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection in both front and rear aspects
  • 3 GB / 4 GB LPDDR4x memory and 32 GB / 64 GB / 128 GB storage options
  • 13 MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture
  • 48 MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 camera
  • Rear-mounted fingerprint sensor
  • 4,000 mAh lithium-ion battery

Faster + More Efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 AIE

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 (Lazada | Shopee) replaces the old 14 nm Snapdragon 660 AIE platform, with a new 11 nm Snapdragon 665 AIE platform.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 actually has a slightly slower CPU, but makes up for it with a much faster Adreno 610 GPU.

More importantly, it is built on the smaller 11 nm process technology, which reduces its power consumption and thermal output.

Expanded Photographic Capabilities

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 first introduced a 48 MP main camera built around the Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor, paired with a 5 MP depth sensor.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 (Lazada | Shopee) uses the same 48 MP Samsung GM1 camera, but pairs it with a 2 MP depth sensor instead while offering expanded photographic capabilities through two additional cameras :

[adrotate group=”2″]
  • a new 8 MP wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture
  • a new 2 MP macro camera with f/2.4 lens

The Redmi Note 8 Has Faster Charging… Well, Not Quite

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 (Lazada | Shopee) supports 18 watt fast charging. However, it only ships with a 10 watt fast charger.

If you wish to make full use of its faster charging capability, you will need to purchase a separate 18 watt fast charger.

The Xiaomi Mi A3 – Everything You Need To Know!

Xiaomi just launched the Mi A3 – their new best-in-class Android One smartphone. It promises to offer a big upgrade over last year’s Mi A2 smartphone.

Let’s take a look at what Xiaomi upgraded in the new Mi A3, and see how much has changed from the Mi A2!

The Xiaomi Mi A3 Smartphone

Let’s start with the official Xiaomi Mi A3 tech briefing by Allen An, Xiaomi Country Manager for Malaysia and Singapore.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 AIE Platform

The Xiaomi Mi A3 (MY | US | UK | AU) uses a newer, upgraded Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 mobile platform. Despite its name, it actually has slightly slower CPU performance than the Mi A2‘s Snapdragon 660.

However, it boasts a faster Adreno 610 GPU, and is fabricated on the 11 nm process, which means it is smaller, runs cooler and is more power-efficient.

The Mi A3 also comes with UFS 2.1 flash storage, which is much faster than the eMMC 5.1 flash storage used in the Mi A2.

HD+ AMOLED Display

Xiaomi swapped out the Mi A2‘s Full HD+ IPS display, for a HD+ AMOLED display in the Mi A3.

It has a lower resolution, but offers a much better colour gamut of 102.7% NTSC, with a higher contrast ratio of 60,000:1.

Front Camera : 32 MP With Super Pixel

Xiaomi swapped out the Mi A2‘s 20 MP front camera with f/1.75 aperture and LED flash for a 32 MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture.

To ensure great low-light performance, this 32 MP front camera supports Super Pixel technology, which combines four pixels, creating a large 1.6 μm pseudo-pixel.

Triple Rear Cameras : Dual Cameras + Depth Sensor

The Mi A2 paired a 12 MP Sony IMX486 camera with a 20 MP Sony IMX376 low-light camera. Xiaomi took a different direction with the Mi A3.

The Xiaomi Mi A3 (MY | US | UK | AU) boasts a 48 MP main camera with a large ½” sensor size and bright f/1.79 aperture. It supports Super Pixel technology, so that takes care of low-light performance.

The main camera is paired with a 2 MP depth sensor, which does not take any photos. Its sole function is to obtain depth data so the Mi A3 can create accurate software bokeh effects.

The second camera is now an 8 MP ultra-wide angle camera, with f/2.2 aperture. This offers more creative photography options than the Mi A2.

The Audio Port + microSD Slot Returns!

Xiaomi also listen to pleas from their fans and reintroduced the 3.5 mm audio port, and the microSD slot. So you can now use your wired earphones, and add more storage!

34% More Battery Capacity!

The Mi A2 was criticised for its relatively small 3,000 mAh battery, which did not last long with the power-hungry Snapdragon 660 processor.

Xiaomi fixed that with a much larger 4,030 mAh battery in the Mi A3 (MY | US | UK | AU). Coupled with the more power-efficient Snapdragon 665 processor, it should deliver a much longer battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Note FE Up Close – What An Incredible Bargain!

Fans of the Samsung Galaxy Note7, and those who prefer a front fingerprint sensor, rejoice! The Samsung Galaxy Note Fan Edition, Galaxy Note FE is here, and it’s an incredible bargain. We will share with you our hands-on look at the Galaxy Note FE, and share with you its key features, specifications and price.

Updated @ 2018-01-05 : Added details of the new Samsung Galaxy Note FE price cut.

What Is The Samsung Galaxy Note FE?

When Samsung recalled their Galaxy Note7 phablets, they were left with about 2.5 million of them. That’s not a lot by their usual sale volume, but still a very large number of devices to dispose of.

Instead of disposing them, Samsung refurbished approximately 400,000 of them for sale in South Korea as the Samsung Galaxy Note FE (Price Check). The only hardware difference was the replacement of their original 3,500 mAh battery with a slightly smaller 3,200 mAh battery that had undergone their new 8-point battery safety check protocol.

On the software end, it now comes with Android 7.0 Nougat, and supports Samsung Bixby, albeit without Bixby Vision and Bixby Voice.

To their surprise, the Samsung Galaxy Note FE (Price Check) was very well-received – completely selling out in South Korea. That led to Galaxy Note7 fans to call for it to be introduced to other countries as well. And now, the Galaxy Note Fan Edition is here in Malaysia and several other countries!

The Samsung Galaxy Note FE Up Close

The Samsung Galaxy Note FE (Price Check) has a 5.7″ Super AMOLED display with a 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution. It has a metal-glass design, with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on both front and rear aspects.

Like the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, it is powered by the Samsung Exynos 8890 Octa SoC. However, it comes with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of internal storage (there are 128 GB options in some countries). It is also IP68-rated for dust- and water-resistance.

The Samsung Galaxy Note FE (Price Check) has the same front and rear cameras as the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. It has a 5 MP front camera with f/1.7 lens, and a 12 MP main camera with f/1.7 lens, OIS capability and a dual-tone LED flash.

For additional storage, a microSD card can be installed. However, the Galaxy Note FE only comes with a hybrid SIM slot. That means the microSD card shares the same slot as the second nanoSIM card.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Hands-On Look

The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) has a large 5.8″ Super AMOLED display with a WQHD+ resolution of 1440 x 2960 pixels. But thanks to its Infinity Display design, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is actually narrower than the Galaxy S7 edge! This means it will better fit smaller hands, while offering a larger display.

The new Infinity Display almost covers the entire front aspect of the Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada). Samsung achieved this by removing the physical Home button and making it part of the display. It is pressure-sensitive, and works like a physical button.

Samsung maintained the metal-glass design of the Galaxy S7 edge, but upgrades the glass protection to the latest Gorilla Glass 5. The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) also boasts the same IP68 dust- and water-resistance rating as the Galaxy S7 edge.

What’s really new is the iris scanner that first appeared in the ill-fated Galaxy Note7, and the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Samsung also introduced a better front camera. We will look into them in greater detail shortly.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) received a nice boost to its front camera. It now pairs an 8 MP sensor with the f/1.7 lens. It is capable of recording 4K videos at 30 fps, and has great low-light capability.  its low-light capability will come in handy, as the front camera does not have flash support, not even screen flash.

Samsung maintained the same excellent 12 MP sensor from the Galaxy S7 edge, which boasts large 1.4 μm pixels and Dual Pixel autofocus technology. That doesn’t mean the sensor is capable of delivering twice as many pixels of resolution though.

Dual Pixel technology is actually an autofocus technology that uses the dual photodiodes in every pixel on the image sensor for phase-detection autofocus. This allows for faster and more accurate focusing, because it uses many more autofocus pixels, instead of just a few dedicated pixels (usually less than 5% of the total).

The slight camera bump in the Galaxy S7 edge is now eliminated, probably because the entire device is now 0.3 mm thicker. However, the back is not perfectly flat, because of the protective ring around the camera and fingerprint sensor. That is not a bad thing, just something to note.

Hybrid SIM & Fingerprint Sensor

This is the European model (SM-G950F), so it does not have a hybrid SIM tray. If you want dual SIM, dual standby capability, you will need to get the South East Asian model (SM-G950FD). This gives you some flexibility – you can choose to use either a second SIM card, or a microSD card, but not both at the same time. The microSD slot supports microSD cards of up to 256 GB in size.

With the removal of the physical Home button, Samsung moved the fingerprint sensor to the back of the Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada). This is not unique as many smartphones have a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor (e.g. Huawei Mate 9, Honor 5C). However, the Galaxy S8 fingerprint sensor is awkwardly placed next to the camera sensor, instead of the more natural position below the camera sensor.

The higher position makes it harder for the user to reach (because the Galaxy S8 is a tall device). Being offset makes it harder for left-handed users to use, and makes it easy for all users to smear the main camera lens with their oily fingerprints. Obviously Samsung is aware of this problem, because the Galaxy S8 will alert you to clean the main camera lens!

Sadly, we did not like this fingerprint sensor. It is harder to use, as our video later will show, although its usability improves with practice. But the good news is – the Samsung Galaxy S8 also supports new alternative login methods like iris scanning and face recognition.

[adrotate banner=”5″]

Iris Scanner & Facial Recognition

These are new abilities for a Samsung Galaxy S series smartphone. They were first introduced in the Galaxy Note7, The iris scanner was surprisingly easy to set up and use, and so, it quickly became our favourite way to log into the Galaxy S8.

The iris scanner works best if you are not using glasses or contact lenses though, and it may not work in bright sunlight. Its accuracy may also be affected by dirt and fingerprint smudges on the iris camera and LED sensor. Finally, the iris scanner takes longer to log in than the fingerprint sensor, but the coolness factor is undeniable.

The facial recognition feature is easier and faster to use because it does not require you to align your eyes with the sensor focus circles. However, it is less secure than the iris scanner or fingerprint scanner.

IP68 Dust & Water Resistance

Like the Galaxy S7 edge, the Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) is IP68-rated for dust- and water-resistance. Best of all, you don’t even have to prepare it in any way before you dunk it into water! For more information how how Samsung achieved this feat, take a look at our Samsung Galaxy S7 IP68 Engineering Explained.

Officially, the Galaxy S8 can withstand complete immersion in water up to 1.5 m in depth, for up to 30 minutes. That means you can take it for jogs in the rain, reading in the shower or soaking in bath. Heck, you can even take it for a swim!

There are some caveats though. The IP68 rating applies to a specific set of test conditions : 15-35 °C, 86-106 kPa, 1.5 metre, 30 minutes. Even so, water may enter and damage the Galaxy S7 edge if it is exposed to “water moving with force“, like running water from a tap or waterfall, or ocean waves.

In other words, this is not a waterproof phone like the Oukitel K10000 Pro or the Kenxinda ruggerdised smartphones. It is IP68 water-resistant, so you need to be gentle with it. You can read more about this in our article – Samsung Galaxy S7 IP68 Engineering Explained.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Setup Process

The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, and is very easy to set-up. If you are setting it up as a new device, it should take you only 5-7 minutes to finish the setup process.

The Ergonomics

Looking at the specifications, you would expect the Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) to be a large phablet. After all, it has a large 5.8″ display. Yet, it feels smaller than its predecessor, the 5.5″ Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, and even 5.2″ smartphones like HTC 10.

Despite the large display, it is narrower at just over 6.8 mm wide. This makes it a better fit for smaller hands. Because it’s narrower, the Galaxy S8 also fits pockets better. That said, it is longer and will poke out of shallower pockets.

The large Super AMOLED display is beautiful as always. Despite claims of red screen issues, our review unit had no such problems. However, the WQHD+ resolution of 1440 x 2960 results in a non-standard 18.5:9 display ratio. Watching movies will result in some pillarboxing – a black bar on each side of the movie.

The Gorilla Glass 5 back looks fabulous… at first. It is easily smudged by oily fingerprints, because it lacks the oleophobic coating of the front Gorilla Glass 5 cover protecting the display. The smudges are particularly obvious on the Midnight Black version.

[adrotate banner=”5″]

Available Memory & Storage

The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) comes with 4 GB of LPDDR4 memory, of which 1.5 GB (37.5%) is available for use. There is a fair bit of bloat. That said, 1.5 GB of memory is enough to run several applications simultaneously. In fact, it is more memory than what some low-end smartphones ship with!

The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) comes with 64 GB of internal flash storage, with 52.6 GB of free space for you to use. That is enough space to store about 12,000 photos, or 6.5 hours of 1080p videos, or 2.5 hours of 4K videos. If that’s not enough, you can top it up with a microSD card (up to 256 GB).

Camera Performance – Photos

The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) uses the same excellent 12 MP camera as the Galaxy S7 edge. It will use either the Sony IMX260 sensor, or Samsung’s own ISOCELL S5KL1 sensor. They are both identical in specifications and performance – with Dual Pixel autofocus technology and 1.4 μm pixels.

The maximum 12 MP resolution is attained with the 4:3 aspect ratio. Each picture has a resolution of 4032 x 3024, and a file size of between 3.8 MB and 4.8 MB. Here are 6 high-resolution samples for you to check out. Click on them to load the full-sized photos, which you can also download to examine.

It’s no surprise that the Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) performed exactly as its predecessor, the Galaxy S7 edge, in this respect. It still remains one of the best, if not the best, smartphone camera out there today.

Camera Performance – Video Recording

Like its predecessor, the Galaxy S7 edge, the Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) is capable of recording 4K videos from both front and back cameras. However, this time, Samsung has limited the 4K recording time to just 10 minutes. This was likely done to ensure that the sensor does not overheat the battery that lies next to it.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge has no such limitations, and is thus, a better smartphone for 4K video recording. However, the Galaxy S7 edge is somewhat limited by the 4 GB file size limit. When you record a long 4K video, it will be broken up into separate files that are about 11 minutes in length, with a short recording gap in between.

Below are six video samples, all taken without the use of gimbals.

Test #1 : Blues Band (1080p)

We really liked how the Galaxy S8 captured this rendition of Mongo Santamaría’s 1962 hit Watermelon Man. The audio quality was very good, albeit lacking the wider dynamic range of the HTC 10 (when HiRes Audio is enabled). The noise reduction is decent, although the background noise is still audible, especially at around the 3:20 mark.

Test #2 : Blues Band (4K)

In this video, note the incredible amount of detail captured by the Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada). We are particularly impressed with its ability to capture detail in the darker foreground, while not overblowing the much brighter background. It also demonstrated decent image stabilisation, although it’s far from being the best we have seen.

Test #3 : Street Market (1080p)

In this test of the Samsung Galaxy S8’s image stabilisation capability, you will note that it does a rather decent job of smoothing out the jerkiness during our walk. It is not the best we have seen, but it’s still pretty good.

Test #4 : Street Market (4K)

The 4K video is noticeably jerky. This is probably because it can only rely on OIS (optical image stabilisation), but there’s no EIS (electronic image stabilisation).

Test #5 : Night Dancing (1080p)

The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) exhibited great control of the scene. It captured great detail in the much darker foreground, while doing a very respectable job of controlling the highlights in the much brighter background. There was also no abrupt changes in the exposure when we panned from a brighter scene to a darker one. Very good!

Test #6 : Night Dancing (4K)

The resolution in this 4K video is amazing, considering the fact this was taken at night with limited light. The camera’s f/1.7 lens really helped to deliver great low-light performance.

Battery Recharging Performance

The Samsung Galaxy S8 comes with an adaptive fast charger with a power output of 15 W. Take a look at how fast it recharged the 3,000 mAh battery.

It took the Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) just 87 minutes (1 hour 27 minutes) to recharge its battery from 18% to 100%. This is a battery life : recharging ratio of 8.4 : 1 – a truly amazing performance.

The fastest recharging happened up to the 85% level. This took just 57 minutes. Then the recharging speed slowed down, and it took a further 30 minutes to top up the remaining 15%.

Our Verdict & Award

The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) is a work of design and engineering marvel. Even with greater scrutiny and safety protocols in place, Samsung managed to squeeze in a plethora of new technologies into the Galaxy S8.

First and foremost is the Infinity Display, which is almost bezel-less and covers almost all of the front aspect. To achieve this, Samsung integrated a pressure-sensitive Home button into the display itself, and moved the fingerprint sensor to the back.

The Infinity Display also allowed Samsung to increase the display size while reducing the width of the device. The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) has a large 5.8″ display in a form factor that equivalent to a regular 5″ device. It makes for a better fit for smaller hands, and most pockets.

The new 18.5 : 9 aspect ratio is useful for viewing two different screens at the same time, but introduces pillarboxing when you watch movies. Samsung allows you to stretch the videos to fit the entire screen, but you will lose the upper and lower parts of the videos. So it’s a trade-off.

As their flagship smartphone, it comes as no surprise that the Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) is fast… very fast actually. It also has plenty of memory and Samsung thankfully upgraded the internal storage to 64 GB. This should be more than enough for most users, even if they enjoy recording 4K videos.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) retained the same amazing camera used in its predecessor, the Galaxy S7 edge. It takes the same excellent pictures and videos, even in low-light conditions. It only loses out a little in its image stabilisation and audio fidelity capabilities. Even so, this is still one of the best smartphone cameras in the market.

[adrotate banner=”4″]

We also love what Samsung did with its battery. The Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) comes with a smaller batter than the Galaxy S7 edge, but it actually lasted an hour longer (12 hours) in our stress test! That puts it on par with smartphones with 5,000 mAh batteries. Best of all – you can completely recharge it in less than 1.5 hours!

The offset fingerprint sensor, though, was awkward to use. We highly recommend that Samsung move the fingerprint sensor to the more conventional position below the main camera in their next device. We far prefer the iris scanner, which is really easy (and cool!) to use.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 (Amazon | Lazada) proves that Samsung still has the magical touch. They continue to lead the field in developing new technologies that are not only awe-inspiring, but actually add new practical capabilities. The boys and girls are Cupertino better buck the hell up, because Samsung is leaving them in the dust with the Galaxy S8!

There can be no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy S8 deserves our Editor’s Choice Award. Job well done, Samsung!

The Evolution Of The Samsung Galaxy S8 Smartphone

Samsung has done it again – creating a smartphone with features that make people go oooh and ahhh. Two of them actually. But they didn’t start from scratch. The new Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones had their genesis in their two highly-acclaimed predecessors – the Galaxy S7 edge and the Galaxy S6 edge. Let’s take a look at the evolution of the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone!

The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge

The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge is famous for being the first smartphone to feature a display that curved at the two edges. But it also marked Samsung’s first foray into an all metal-and-glass design with a non-removable battery. It had an aluminium unibody chassis with Gorilla Glass 4 protection on both front and back aspects.

You may not recall it, but it was also the first Samsung smartphone to support wireless charging and Samsung Pay. Needless to say, the Galaxy S6 edge was very sexy, and impressed us greatly. The only things we didn’t like about it – the lack of a microSD slot, and the bottom location of the 3.5 mm audio port.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge

The popularity of the Galaxy S6 edge ensured that Samsung would retain the curved edge display for the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge.  They also retained the magnificent Quad HD Super AMOLED display. Why fix something that’s not broken?

Samsung fixed the biggest gripe users had with the Galaxy S6 edge, restoring the microSD slot in the form of a Hybrid SIM tray. They also renewed their emphasis on the main camera by using a new 12 MP Dual Pixel camera with f/1.7 lens. It was arguably the best smartphone camera of 2016.

But what the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge is probably best known for is its IP68 design. It is the first non-ruggerdised smartphone to be IP68 dust- and water-resistant all the time. That means you can immerse it in water without prior preparation, and it does not look like a brick!

What we didn’t really fancy – the limited internal storage (it had just 32 GB of storage initially), and the 5 MP front camera, which was so 2015.

The Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung built upon their highly-successful Galaxy S7 edge to create the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. It maintained the same curved screen and IP68 protection, albeit with a higher resolution WQHD+ display and Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

The removal of the edge moniker suggests that Samsung has decided to only use the trademark curved AMOLED displays in their Galaxy S family going forward. Samsung also removed the Home button completely, creating an incredible Infinity Display.

Samsung maintained the same highly-acclaimed 12 MP Dual Pixel camera from the Galaxy S7 edge, but gave the front camera a new 8 MP sensor with autofocus capability. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ also boast the iris scanner that was first introduced with the Galaxy Note7.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones have a dedicated button that activates the new Bixby artificial intelligence assistant. They can also be connected to the Samsung DeX dock, which provides you with a desktop-like computing experience.

The OPPO R9s Official Press Release

Kuala Lumpur, 5th January 2017 –The OPPO R9s was announced at an event in Kuala Lumpur today. Powered with a 16MP rear camera, extra-wide f/1.7 aperture, coupled with the new Dual PDAF technology, OPPO, the camera phone expert now introduces a smartphone packed with improved rear camera technology that enables users to capture clear photos anytime, anywhere.

In addition to that, the R9s also introduces OPPO’s VOOC Flash Charge technology for speedy charging and lightning-quick fingerprint access. Now, with the R9s, users are able to effortlessly capture professional-grade photos all day.

OPPO is no stranger to the world of innovative camera phones. Two years ago, the brand introduced the OPPO N3’s motorized swivel camera that can track objects as they move and can rotate up to 206 degrees, also flaunting a Schneider Kreuznach-certified lens.

In addition to that, the F1s garnered positive feedback and incredible sales. This time, the brand decides to up the rear camera game by introducing massive improvements to the R9s’s 16MP rear camera, enabling users to capture even moving objects clearly.

“As this year will be the year of mobile photography, we at OPPO Malaysia would like provide users with a camera that is able to capture photos that are crisp, clear and bright. With the R9s, now it’s clear”, said Chen Lu, Brand Director of OPPO Malaysia.

All-new IMX 398 sensor and Dual PDAF technology

Last year, the OPPO F1s rose to success, thanks to its superb selfie-snapping ability. The new R9s carries forward that brilliant suite of front camera features and rounds them off with a rear photography experience that elevates its predecessor’s. The device sports an impressive 16 MP front camera, paired with a large f/2.0 aperture and OPPO’s Screen Flash technology that produces excellent night shots.

[adrotate banner=”4″]

At the center of the R9s’ rear camera prowess is the all-new Sony IMX398 sensor – a customized 1/2.8 inch sensor that Sony and OPPO developed together. With this sensor and an extra-wide f/1.7 aperture that captures 40% more light than previous generations, the R9s’ rear camera offers phenomenal focusing speed, noise reduction and low-light performance, allowing users to snap breathtakingly clear and beautiful images in a matter of seconds.

The R9s’ camera uses Dual PDAF technology, a next-generation upgrade from standard PDAF solutions. The first generation of PDAF has only “a half” pixel for focusing, but the Dual PDAF increases by 100% the area of the sensor’s pixel array equipped with the special photo diodes necessary for phase-detection autofocus, allowing lightning-fast focusing — even in low light — and producing crystal-clear images.

“Our research efforts revealed that users’ dissatisfactions with rear cameras is that images typically appear blurry, or are dark and with visible poor pixel performance. Determined to solve this problem, we aimed to produce a smartphone with a rear camera that allows users to snap clear, crisp photos anytime, anywhere”, explains Ken Ng, Product Manager, OPPO Malaysia.

Head-turning ultra-fine “six-string” antenna lines

The R9s introduces a stylish and innovative take on the rear antenna lines used to ensure a strong signal. The thick white bands that traverse the back of most phones have been replaced with two sets of three ultra-fine lines. Though these lines measure at a mere 0.3 mm, the “six-string” design manages to imbue the R9s with an effortless sophistication, evoking the elegant lines of a stringed instrument.

The fresh look is coupled with stronger performance than ever – the device is equipped to operate on six frequency ranges, dynamically choosing the best one for 4G and Wi-Fi signals.

The new design sees the R9s’ body equipped with 98.9% of metal, with a screen-to-body ratio of 72.9 %, making its visual a subtle, refined and distinguished one, with superb signal reception to boot.

Powerful, long-lasting performance to keep users snapping away

The R9s sports a Qualcomm octa-core processor, 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM, and cruises seamlessly on ColorOS 3.0 (based on Android 6.0). Storage-wise, the 64 GB onboard can be expanded by an additional 128 GB, ensuring users will have plenty of room to store their crystal-clear shots. Meanwhile, the R9s’ fingerprint reader gives users exceptionally fast 0.2s touch access, and intelligently refines its image of the user’s fingerprint over time.

The R9s is also backed with a 3,010 mAh battery and OPPO’s industry-leading VOOC Flash Charge technology, for seamlessly fast charging that are low-voltage, so your phone’s internals will never be taxed with excess heat.

With its head-turning design, powerful performance and superb all-around photography experience, the R9s is set to let users capture their lives in style!
