Mount Elizabeth : Doctor’s Severe Vaccine Reaction Is False!

Mount Elizabeth Hospital has officially refuted claims that their doctor had a severe reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Find out what’s going on, and what the FACTS really are!

Viral Fake News : Doctor Had Severe Vaccine Reaction!

In the past few days, antivaxxers and netizens have been feverishly sharing a post on Facebook and WhatsApp regarding a renown doctor who allegedly suffered a stroke after getting the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

From what we understand, the long Facebook post (now deleted) was written by a man called Bun Ngok Fong, who claimed to be the cousin of this doctor.

In addition to claiming that the doctor had a severe reaction to the Pfizer vaccine, he made many other claims that we found to be completely false.

Singaporean People’s Power Party founder Goh Meng Seng then picked up on it, and share it out together with his alarmist claims about vaccine adverse effects.

Due to the dramatic claims they both made, the post went viral on Facebook and WhatsApp.

Out of respect for the family, we will not be sharing that viral post again.

Mount Elizabeth : Doctor’s Severe Vaccine Reaction News Is False!

On 4 April 2021, Mount Elizabeth Hospital issued a short statement refuting Bun Ngok Fong’s Facebook post.

Claim : The Doctor Is Bun Ngok Fong’s Cousin
Verdict : False

In his now-deleted Facebook post, Bun Ngok Fong claimed that the doctor who suffered a stroke from the Pfizer vaccine is his cousin.

However, a friend of the family and Mount Elizabeth Hospital itself clarified that he is not related to their family :

The doctor’s family has also confirmed that the writer is not related to them and has written to Facebook to have the post removed.

Claim : The Doctor Had An Adverse Reaction To The Vaccine
Verdict : False

Bun Ngok Fong claimed that the doctor suffered an adverse reaction to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Mount Elizabeth Hospital labelled his claims as untrue :

We are aware of a post circulating on Facebook, alleging that one of our doctors had a severe reaction a week after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.  We wish to clarify that the allegations in the post are untrue.

Doctor’s Family : Please Respect Our Privacy

The doctor’s family is asking everyone to please respect their space and privacy during this difficult time for them.

Bun Ngok Fong either had his post removed by Facebook, or has voluntarily deleted it.

Goh Meng Seng shared Mount Elizabeth Hospital’s clarification, but kept a screenshot of Bun Ngok Fong’s post up.

If you received the viral message about this doctor’s alleged adverse reaction to the Pfizer vaccine, please DO NOT forward it any further.

If necessary, you can share our fact check of the false claims. Otherwise, tell the sender that it’s fake news, and request that they stop sending it out anymore.

Did Dr. Ann Tan Get A Stroke From Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine?

Did renown fertility specialist Dr. Ann Tan get a stroke from the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine?

Find out what’s the latest viral story on the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, and what the facts really are!

Claim : Dr. Ann Tan Suffered A Stroke From Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine!

On or just after 25 March 2021, Bun Ngok Fong posted a message on Facebook about his cousin – the renown fertility specialist Dr. Ann Tan of Singapore.

He has since deleted it, but People’s Power Party founder Goh Meng Seng copied and reposted it, while others shared the post in WhatsApp where it went viral :

Dr Ann Tan now warded in ICU of Mount E for brain haemorrhage after taking the vaccine. Confirmed by her cousin’s FB post:

From the FB page of Bun Ngok Fong:

Warning against the Pfizer vaccine.

I am numbed, heart broken, but in prayers for my cousin, Dr. Ann, an internationally celebrated gynecologist and fertility specialist with her practice in Singapore and who brought her expertise to the other places of the world with mission to deliver hope and happiness here, there and everywhere. She is vivacious, gracious, beautiful and kind, a devoted mother of three . All this shattered for her, for us, for only a week or so after her taking the Pfizer BioNtech shot , she suffered a brain haemorrhage , thus joining the casualty list to this problematic vaccine that stands to make the parent company around US$35 billion for this year alone, a bonanza that this Big Pharma group plans to repeat upon an annual basis.

Pfizer will of course try to exonerate but cannot extricate itself from the scandal which the Western corrupt and complicit media will continue to conceal or explain away the extent of the risks that the shots entail and mitigate the bad publicity by insisting that there is no direct proof between the sudden collapse of relatively young and previously healthy physicians — as Ann’s case is no longer unique.

That the company CEO, Albert Bourla, declined to take the jab, as a morale booster if nothing else, says volumes about the efficacy and reliability of the product which in essence is genetic manipulation.

Now the European Union has proposed a vaccination passport that may not recognize other types of shots — from Cuba, Russia and China — is proof in of itself of the ploy to create immunization apartheid and compell hesitant candidates to subject themselves to a shortlist of western and still dubious injections.

In the meantime I weep for Dr. Ann and remember her seating on my side in the clan banquet about 14 months ago as we exchanged news about the children and their careers.
Missing you, Ann, so dearly.

Did Dr. Ann Tan Get A Stroke From Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine? The Facts

We looked into the matter, and the many claims Bun Ngok Fong made in this Facebook post, and here is what we know so far…

Claim #1 : Dr. Ann Tan Suffered A Brain Haemorrhage
Verdict : Likely True

On 25 March 2021, the Women Fertility & Fetal Centre of the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore posted this notice, with many messages of concern by her patients :

We therefore believe that something serious had indeed happened to Dr. Ann Tan.

Naturally, the hospital will not reveal any details of her condition. We will only know for sure if and when her family publicly announces what had actually happened.

Claim #2 : Dr. Ann Tan Is Bun Ngok Fong’s Cousin
Verdict : False

In his now-deleted Facebook post, Bun Ngok Fong claimed that Dr. Ann Tan is his cousin.

However, a friend of the family and Mount Elizabeth Hospital itself clarified that he is not related to their family :

The doctor’s family has also confirmed that the writer is not related to them and has written to Facebook to have the post removed.

Goh Meng Seng shared Mount Elizabeth Hospital’s clarification, but kept a screenshot of Bun Ngok Fong’s post up.

Bun Ngok Fong (left) and Goh Meng Seng (right)

Claim #3 : Her Brain Haemorrhage Was Due To The Pfizer Vaccine
Verdict : Likely False

Bun Ngok Fong claimed that she suffered a “brain haemorrhage” about “a week or so” after taking the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

The Pfizer vaccine is not known to cause an intracerebral haemorrhage. It is known to cause a rare anaphylactic reaction, probably from the PEG (Polyethylene glycol) used to create the lipid nanoparticles that protects the mRNA vaccine.

Only one 60 year-old Japanese woman was known to have died from a brain haemorrhage three days after receiving the Pfizer vaccine. Even that case has not been confirmed to be related to the vaccine.

Tomohiro Morio, a doctor advising the government, said, “The brain haemorrhage that is suspected as a cause is relatively common among people from their 40s to their 60s, and at this time, based on examples overseas, there does not seem to be a link between brain haemorrhages and the coronavirus vaccine.

The doctors treating Dr. Ann Tan will know if her intracerebral haemorrhage was due to other causes like a ruptured aneurysm or AVM (arteriovenous malformation).

This incident also happened at least “a week or so” after her vaccination, and is unlikely to be related to the vaccine. Even so, we should not jump to conclusions until we know more.

The opinion of this man (who is apparently living in Vancouver or Hong Kong) is not substantiated by any evidence whatsoever.

In addition, the Mount Elizabeth Hospital labelled his claims as untrue :

We are aware of a post circulating on Facebook, alleging that one of our doctors had a severe reaction a week after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.  We wish to clarify that the allegations in the post are untrue.

Claim #4 : The Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccine Is Problematic
Verdict : False

Every vaccine comes with a certain amount of risk. As mentioned earlier, a small number of people will get a severe allergic reaction after vaccination.

However, the claim that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is “problematic” is false.

The Pfizer clinical trial data, based on over 40,000 people, showed that it was both safe and effective. The biggest issue identified was a rare anaphylactic reaction to the vaccine – just 11.1 cases per million doses.

Not only is this extremely rare, it can be easily treated with an intramuscular injection of epinephrine. That’s why people are asked to stay 30-60 minutes after getting their Pfizer vaccines.

As of 1 April 2021, over 628 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered, and a substantial number are of the Pfizer COMIRNATY vaccine, with very few cases of anaphylaxis.

Claim #5 : The Media Is Concealing The Risks
Verdict : False

Did you know you can actually download the FDA Briefing Document of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine?

It gives you uncensored details of their clinical trial data, so what is there for the media to conceal?

The media makes a good scapegoat for conspiracy theorists who dislike how the media consistently debunk their fake news and false narratives.

The media, for their part, are not perfect. They report on every post-vaccination death or hospitalisation, even if it has not been established that the vaccine is the cause.

Instead of shunning the media or putting them on a pedestal, apply critical thinking and wait for the actual research results.

Claim #6 : Pfizer CEO Declined To Take The Vaccine
Verdict : False

In 14 December 2020, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla told CNBC that “he and other executives will not cut the line“, as there were limited doses available and the CDC had recommended prioritising healthcare workers and long-term care residents.

Antivaxxers and Sinophiles leaped on his statement, calling it evidence he did not trust his own vaccine.

The truth is he said in the CNBC interview that, “As soon as I can, I will. The only sensitivity here, Meg, is that I don’t want to have an example that I’m cutting the line.”

Albert Bourla received his first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in mid February 2021, and his second shot on 10 March 2021.

Claim #7 : Pfizer Vaccine Is Genetic Manipulation
Verdict : False

Pfizer and Modern vaccines are based on mRNA technology, which means they do NOT penetrate the cell nucleus and therefore, cannot possibly change the DNA within.

mRNA itself is also transient, and is automatically disposed by the cell after being used several times. Therefore, the spike proteins it codes for are only created during that short time, not for a lifetime.

You can read more in our article on the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA technology.

Claim #8 : EU Vaccine Passport To Exclude Russian / Chinese Vaccines
Verdict : False

You can download and read the EU proposal for a COVID-19 Digital Green Certificate. It clearly states that:

  • EU countries must accept other countries’ vaccination certificates “under the same conditions
  • This obligation only extends to EU-approved vaccines
  • However, EU countries “can decide to accept other vaccines in addition” to EU-approved vaccines.

Therefore, this COVID-19 Digital Green Certificate will allow EU countries to recognise Russian and Chinese vaccines that have not been approved by the EU.

COVID-19 vaccines from Russia, China and other countries can also seek approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and be automatically qualified for this “vaccine passport”.

Therefore, the claim is categorically FALSE.

Claim #9 : EU Is Promoting Vaccine Apartheid, Forcing Travellers To Use Western Vaccines

Bun Ngok Fong claimed that the EU is promoting vaccine apartheid, and forcing travellers to use Western vaccines.

As we demonstrated above, the EU COVID-19 Digital Green Certificate does no such thing. EU countries can choose to accept Chinese and Russian vaccines.

It is also only fair that the vaccine passport acceptance be reciprocal, and not open only one way.

On the other hand, China resumed processing visas in March 2021, but only if travellers are first vaccinated with Chinese COVID-19 vaccines.

We look forward to Bun Ngok Fong criticising China for promoting vaccine apartheid, and compelling people to get vaccinated with Chinese vaccines, even if they prefer Western vaccines.

We should point out that as of 2 April 2021, the trial data for all four Chinese COVID-19 vaccines have yet to be released publicly.

As we pointed out in our article on choosing COVID-19 vaccines, all approved vaccines will protect you against death and serious COVID-19 disease. But it is really dishonest for Sinophiles to falsely criticise the West for actions perpetuated by China itself.

They should be ashamed of themselves for pushing a false narrative during a global pandemic that has killed over 2.8 million people globally.

Fact Check : Nike Made Satan Shoes With Human Blood?

Did Nike make 666 pairs of Satan Shoes with human blood and a Satanic emblem?

Find out what’s the latest controversy, and what the FACTS really are!

Claim : Nike Made Satan Shoes With Human Blood?

Social media is rife with all sorts of claims about Lil Nas X’s controversial Satan Shoes.

While some are understandably upset about these shoes, others are making false claims about them.

Here is a great example of the kind of claims that are going viral over these Satan Shoes.

Nike made 666 pairs and named it Satan. Sold each pair for USD 1018 taken from Luke 10:18. Each has one drop of human blood and a Satanic emblem.

Nike pulls an American flag shoe because it was deemed offensive but is now releasing a Satan-inspired shoe.

Nike Satan Shoes Claims : The Facts!

Fact #1 : Satan Shoes Were Produced By MSCHF

Satan Shoes were produced by MSCHF Product Studio Inc. – a New York-based company – who created them in collaboration with “Old Town Road” rapper Lil Nas X.

Fact #2 : Satan Shoes Are Customised Nike Air Max 97 Sneakers

Satan Shoes are really customised Nike Air Max 97 sneakers. However, this does not mean Nike made them.

MSCHF bought regular Air Max 97 sneakers and customised them with what appears to be :

  • sole air bubble containing red link and a drop of human blood
  • bronze inverted pentagram lace emblem
  • embroidered Luke 10:18 and individual numbering on the side
  • embroidered MSCFH and Lil Nas X at the back
  • red inverted cross above Nike logo
  • new sock liner

Fact #3 : Does Satan Shoes Contain Human Blood?

Yes, but only a single drop in each sole, according to the Satan Shoes product description.

The clear air bubble under each sole contains 60 cc (60 ml) of red ink and one drop of human blood.

While some have suggested that Lil Nas X contributed said human blood, the blood was donated by members of MSCHF.

Fact #4 : Nike Sued MSCHF Over Satan Shoes

Probably due to the fake news circulating about their involvement with Satan Shoes, Nike sued MSCHF on 30 March 2021.

The Nike lawsuit, which was filed with the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York, stated that :

  • the Satan Shoes were produced “without Nike’s approval and authorization“,
  • Nike “do not have a relationship with Lil Nas X or MSCHF“, and
  • “Nike is in no way connected with this project”.

Their concern about being boycotted over false claims of involvement with Satan Shoes is apparent :

“There is already evidence of significant confusion and dilution occurring in the marketplace, including calls to boycott Nike in response to the launch of MSCHF’s Satan Shoes based on the mistaken belief that Nike has authorized or approved this product.”

Nike is asking the court to immediately stop MSCHF from fulfilling the orders for those shoes, and requested a jury trial to seek damages.

Notably, Nike did not include Lil Nas X in their lawsuit.

Fact #5 : Only 666 Pairs Were Produced

It is true that 666 pairs of Satan Shoes were produced. All but one were sold, allegedly in less than one minute.

The last – 666th pair – would be made available to a social media user, chosen by Lil Nas X from those who shared his tweet.

Fact #6 : They Were Sold For US$1,018

It is true that each pair of Satan Shoes were sold for US$1,018 – a reference to Luke 10:18 in the Bible :

KJV : And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

NIV : He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lighting from heaven.”

Fact #7 : They Were Featured In Montero (Call Me By Your Name)

These shoes were featured in Lil Nas X’s latest song – Montero (Call Me By Your Name).

In the music video, he can be seen sliding down a stripper pole from Heaven to Hell, wearing a pair of these Satan Shoes.

Realme Caught Using iPhone To Demo narzo 30A Gaming?

Realme appeared to have used an iPhone to demonstrate the gaming performance of their new narzo 30A smartphone!

Find out what happened, and Realme’s response to this new scandal!

Realme Caught Using iPhone To Demo narzo 30A Gaming?

On 20 March 2021, Realme launched the narzo 30A smartphone in Bangladesh, which was live-streamed.

They arranged for three gamers to play PUBG Mobile live, to demonstrate the narzo 30A’s gaming performance.

However, at around the 18:03 mark of the livestream (now removed!), a pop-up appeared on the screen :

Guided Access Started

Triple-click the Side Button to exit

Guided Access is an Apple iOS feature, and is therefore available ONLY on Apple iPhones.

In other words, the PUBG Mobile game being shown on the screen was from an Apple iPhone, not the narzo 30A as claimed.

Realme Explains narzo 30A – iPhone Kerfuffle!

This scandal came just days after Realme was exposed for cheating in AnTuTu Benchmark. Realme called it a bug then.

This time, Realme is claiming that the video was pre-recorded due to “local pandemic control policy” and the A1 team sent them the wrong file.

They removed the livestream video, and will republish it after “the re-production is complete“.

Respecting and abiding by the local pandemic control policy, the narzo 30A launch video was planned to be recorded in advance.  Additionally, the launch video involved a narzo 30A hands-on gaming video.

To ensure a better quality video output, the gaming part was recorded by our partner A1 Esports team and sent to the producer, post-recording.

Although the A1 team did use the narzo 30A smartphone for the recording of the gaming part, a wrong file was accidentally sent to the producer, which led to the appearance of a non-realme smartphone in the video.

In response to this issue, we have immediately contacted our A1 team partner to rectify the accident. We shall republish the video after the re-production is complete.

We sincerely apologize for any unanticipated impacts the incident may have caused. Your kind support to the brand is very much appreciated. Please stay tuned with realme for future updates.

We Examine The Realme narzo 30A – iPhone Claims

Going through Realme’s statement, we can’t help but feel troubled by a few “logical inconsistencies”…

Issue #1 : Local Pandemic Control Policy?

What local pandemic control policy? They arranged for three gamers to play PUBG Mobile side-by-side, and without face masks too!

Issue #2 : Pre-Recorded For Better Quality?

If the video was pre-recorded, why was there a need for the A1 team members to stand up there and “pretend play”?

If they were concerned about video quality, they should have just streamed the pre-recorded clip directly, instead of displaying it behind the A1 team members, as a large but pixelated video that lacked contrast.

Issue #3 : They Didn’t Check The Pre-Recorded Video?

What makes even less sense is the claim that the A1 esports team recorded their gameplay using the narzo 30A, but sent them the wrong file.

Why would the A1 esports team record their gameplay on an iPhone, as well as the narzo 30A? Didn’t Realme check the video they received, to make sure it was from their narzo 30A smartphone?

Which is more likely?

a) they accidentally triggered Guided Access during the livestream, or

b) the A1 team recorded the gameplay on an iPhone and narzo 30A, and accidentally sent Realme the wrong file, and Realme didn’t check their gameplay before streaming it onto the big screen?

You may recall that the Realme team blamed a bug for their fantastical AnTuTu benchmark score. They have yet to adequately explain that either…

narzo 30A – iPhone Scandal : Another Hit To Realme’s Rep

We have been a fan of Realme since they first started with their Realme 2 ProRealme 2 and Realme C1, because they offered really great value for our money.

So we were not surprised by how fast their devices improved, and how fast they grew. Heck, we even took the realme 3 on a photographic trip to the US West Coast, and Las Vegas!

However, a new team apparently took over in the middle of 2019, and it looks like they are willing to risk everything just to gain market share. Perhaps that’s why they coined the tagline, Dare To Leap!.

Since then, they have been hit by revelations that their 90 Hz display only works in certain situations, the recent AnTuTu cheating scandal and now this iPhone streaming scandal.

It’s a real shame, because Realme was doing so well, and building a great reputation for offering great features at a low, low price.

Reputation, as they say, takes a lifetime to build, but can be lost in a second.

We should point out that the Realme narzo 30A is powered by the MediaTek helio G85, which is not affected by the MediaTek benchmark cheating scandal.

Fact Check : Archie Lost Prince Title, Security Over Colour?

Is it true that Archie – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son – was denied the title of Prince and lost his security protection because of his skin colour?

Take a look at the Duchess of Sussex’s shocking claims, and find out what the FACTS really are!

Claim : Archie Lost Prince Title, Security Over Colour?

In Prince Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah, she made shocking claims of racism about the British royal family.

There were, for example, “several conversations” by members of the royal family about Archie’s skin colour – “what that would mean and what that would look like”.

She also claimed that they were told that the royal family did not want Archie to have the title of Prince, saying “They  were saying they didn’t want him to be a prince … which would be different from protocol and that he wasn’t going to receive security

Meghan also implied that it might be a case of “the first member of colour in this family not being titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be.

Truth : Archie Is Not Entitled To Title Of Prince Or Security

We do not know if any member of the royal family actually told the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that their son cannot be a Prince because of his skin colour.

However, we do know for a fact that her son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, is not entitled to the title of Prince.

We also know that the lack of the Prince title does not affect his security protection.

Here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : 1917 Decree Limits Titles Of Prince + Princess

King George V issued a decree in 1917, which limits the titles of Prince and Princess to :

  • the children of the monarch,
  • the children of the monarch’s sons, and
  • the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales

By that decree, Archie is currently not entitled to the title of Prince. It had nothing to do with his race or skin colour.

Fact #2 : Archie Could Become Prince

By the same 1917 decree, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor could later become a Prince, if the current heir to the throne – Prince Charles – becomes king.

When that happens, he becomes the grandchild of a monarch and automatically receives the title of Prince.

However, that may not happen if, hypothetically, Prince Charles abdicates the throne in favour of his son, Prince William.

Fact #3 : Princess Charlotte + Prince Louis Received Their Titles By Decree

The Duchess of Sussex may wonder why Prince William’s children are princes and princess, while her Archie isn’t.

By the 1917 decree, Prince George – the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales – is automatically a prince.

In 2012, Queen Elizabeth II decreed that the children of the Prince of Wales and his wife, Catherine, would be all princes and princesses.

The reason was not mentioned, but it would be logical to assume that it was to put the younger children on par with Prince George.

We should point out that Queen Elizabeth II issued this decree before Prince George was born on 22 July 2013.

And it only came into effect when Princess Charlotte was born on 2 May 2015, and Prince Louis on 23 April 2018.

Fact #4 : Prince Title Has Nothing To Do With Security

The title of Prince does not actually confer any special security arrangements, especially if they are to be paid by the state.

Full-time working royal family members like Prince William and his wife, Catherine (who is not a princess, but the Duchess of Cambridge) are protected by police bodyguards.

On the other hand, royals with jobs outside the family – like Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie – do not have police bodyguards. They pay for their own private security.

So it was Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision not to be full-time working royals that eliminated their state-funded security protection, not Archie’s lack of prince title.

After all, Prince Harry is still a prince and Archie would have been protected by the same security detail. But that is not the case, because the title of Prince does not automatically include state-sponsored security.

After all, the British public cannot be expected to foot the bill for their security, if they choose not to work for the country, right?

Online Shopping Package Wrapped In Pink Underwear!

We are used to all kinds of packaging for online purchases, but this is the first time we have seen a package wrapped in pink underwear!

Delivery Mystery : Package Wrapped In Pink Underwear!

Online shopping is all the rage during the pandemic, and we are used to all manners of packaging. Everything from cardboard boxes and bubble wrap, to plastic bags and styrofoam boxes.

But this is the first time we have ever seen a cardboard package wrapped in pink underwear!

On 7 February 2021, Mamaayu Admia Ayunormaslinda shared about how her husband received a package from J&T Express. Not only was the box beaten up, it came wrapped in pink underwear!

The J&T Express delivery man was tickled by the odd packaging, but said that he was delivering the package as received.

To be clear, she ordered pencil boxes for her children, not underwear. So it was not a case of a package of underwear being torn, and someone at J&T Express just wrapping an errant underwear over the package, instead of stuffing it back inside.

Package Wrapped In Pink Underwear : Who Did It?

As this case came right after the J&T Express worker controversy, netizens suggested that it may be a case of “protest” or “sabotage” by disgruntled J&T Express workers.

After all, no vendor would actually ship their parcels wrapped in underwear. That’s a sure way to become infamous and possibly lose customers.

This led some netizens to accuse Mamaayu of making up the story.

But this “wrapping” was peculiar enough that someone working at J&T Express noticed it earlier and took a picture of it.

Ain Nurza, posted this picture below, saying that her husband who works at J&T Express found the package already wrapped in the pink underwear earlier.

The box looks to be in good condition and not beaten up, so this must have been early in the delivery process.

With this corroborating picture from a third-party, it is clear that Mamaayu was not making up the story.

It seems most likely that someone at another J&T Express hub wrapped the package with this pink underwear as a prank, or as a form of protest or sabotage in relation to the alleged cuts in commission.

J&T Express Worker Strike Over Pay Cut Clarified!

Viral videos have surfaced, allegedly showing J&T Express workers on strike over a pay cut!

Take a look at the videos, and find out what really happened!

J&T Express Worker Strike Over Pay Cut?

Several videos have surfaced, allegedly showing J&T Express workers on strike over a pay cut.

One of them, in particular, showed J&T Express workers shouting, with one worker standing on a conveyor belt throwing parcels.

According to various netizens, the J&T Express workers were angry and on strike, because their commissions were cut.

The other videos showed what appears to be a J&T fulfilment centre full of undelivered parcels with no one in sight. They appear to be genuine, with J&T logo on some of the parcels.

Coincidentally or not, Muhammad Syazwan Samat just received this brand new PC case from J&T Express.

And one family received their package wrapped in pink underwear!

J&T Express confirmed the incident, and clarified that it was a misunderstanding by several workers who did not understand their year-end bonus plan.

J&T Express in Perak then shared a video of seven workers saying that they did not strike, and apologising for abusing the packages.

On the other hand, this internal memo showed that J&T introduced a new, lower commission rate for their delivery dispatchers from 1 February 2021 onwards.

J&T Express On Viral Video Of Worker Strike

On 7 February 2021, J&T Express finally issued a statement about these viral videos :

The recent viral case which has been circulated on social media regarding “J&T Deducts Employee Wages Incident” that caused the dissatisfaction among employees with violent sorting behaviour, which has attracted the attention and discussion of the public, inside and outside the industry.

First of all, we express our deepest apologies to all Malaysians. Everyone’s opinions and suggestions are truly accepted and adopted by the company. In order to ensure the stability of our employees and to give the public a true accountability, we take this opportunity to clarify the truth to the public today.

“Deduction of Employee Wages Incident”:

J&T has been fully committed to localisation development, continuously improving employee compensation and benefits, and promoting the development of Malaysia’s social economy and E-commerce Industry. We have been committed to building a complete compensation and benefits system to increase employee benefits.

J&T has given employees year-end bonuses after comprehensive consideration, in accordance with the bonus rules and regulations, and in accordance with the Malaysian Labour Law, full bonuses are paid to employees who have worked for a year.

For employees who have worked for less than a year, bonuses are paid according to the length of working time without prejudice.

Unfortunately, certain employees are not clear about the bonus payment scheme which led to violent sorting of packages on February 4th, inciting some employees to make collective disturbances, and posting the videos to social media.

Our Perak state management has immediately handled and clarified the incident. On February 5th, the employees had resumed their normal working status and actively sorted and processed the packages of customers.

As for the fact that J&T deducts employee wages, we clarify that J&T will not deduct or owe employees a penny of wages, and hereby declare that we are willing to accept the supervision and inspection by the public and institutions.

World of Buzz : Stop Feeding Content Regurgitation Websites!

A former World of Buzz writer just exposed really goes on inside that infamous clickbait website, and show us why we should stop feeding such content regurgitation websites.

World of Buzz : Who Are They?

World of Buzz claims to be Malaysia’s no. 1 social news website. It is basically a content farm, reposting content scraped from social media websites.

World of Buzz may not be as bad as The Coverage Bureau (which deserves a special mention for reposting old news!), but they are still pretty notorious for their scraped content.

They are part of Influasia, which also runs Lobak Merah, NOODOU, and Munch.

World of Buzz : Former Intern Tells All!

After World of Buzz got banned for a month on Reddit, one of their former writers wrote an expose on what really goes on behind the scenes.

This former writer for World of Buzz was an intern who worked there for four months, and shared evidence to back up his/her claim :

  • official documents
  • a campaign brief
  • emails with the founder
  • employment / onboarding emails

This was what he/she revealed on Reddit :

I was a former intern for 4 months in World of Buzz and am here to spill the tea on this heaping pile of crap they call a “news publication”.

Without revealing too much (am using a throw away account because I am afraid that somebody from Influasia lurking in this sub might be able to pinpoint who I am with my main account), I was a, so called, “content creator”. Only problem is I didn’t create content, I stole them. I was ordered by the bosses to basically rip off whatever I can find on Facebook in the morning when I reach the office.

Obviously, I didn’t join World of Buzz for its Pulitzer Prize winning news reporting. But I never knew how bad their ethics were until the first day I stepped into the office. On the first minute on the job, I was immediately told that I had a strict KPI to follow, 3-5 articles a day, and 1 video per day if you’re a video editor. If you remotely know how news reporting and video production works, you’ll know that this is practically impossible. Hence, why so many articles they publish are basically rip-offs of some other news source. The bosses didn’t care about validity and truth, all they cared was views and revenue.

World of Buzz : Stop Feeding Content Regurgitation Websites!

Clickbait websites like World of Buzz and The Coverage Bureau have long been detested by writers and content creators, but the fact is we, the READERS, are at fault.

We feed these websites, and encourage them to keep farming and regurgitating content from social media and other websites.

What we readers don’t understand is that content creation is HARD WORK.

It may take us just a few minutes to read an article that a writer probably spent several hours writing. And that’s not even counting hours spent in research and fact checking.

Do We Want To Be Donald Trump?

Unfortunately, people today have very short attention spans. The world is moving away from serious, in-depth pieces to short, easy-to-understand blurbs.

Even better if it’s just a picture or a short video clip. People will skip anything too long to read. They even created an acronym for that – TLDR : Too Long, Didn’t Read.

In essence, we are becoming more like Donald Trump, and less like Barack Obama.

Why Are Our Standards So Low?

And with thousands of websites targeting the same readers, the only way to grab our attention is to introduce shocking or scandalous articles, and it doesn’t matter if they are old, fake or misleading!

Why? Because most of us don’t even read beyond the title or first paragraph! And we certainly don’t care whether it’s true or accurate. We just click and share.

Because our standards are so low, we drive the demand for clickbait websites that regurgitate content without verification and fact-checking.

We Are So Entitled + Cheap

We are so entitled, we feel that content creators should not only give you articles and videos for free, they should not have those irritating advertisements.

So we install ad blockers. Why should they be allowed to run ads if the Internet is meant to be free? They should be lucky we even want to read what they write! /s

What readers don’t understand is that many websites do not get paid a single cent, unless you click on the advertisements in their articles or videos. Even those who get paid by views (impressions) are paid mere cents per thousand views!

That encourages them to churn out as much content as possible with as little effort possible. And the easiest and cheapest way to do that is to regurgitate (copy and paste) social media content.

Ultimately, we killed the media industry by making it unprofitable to create content, and created content regurgitating monsters like World of Buzz by making it profitable to just regurgitate content.

If we want things to change – we have to stop being so entitled and cheap.

Stop reading and sharing posts from media regurgitation websites, and start supporting websites that actually create content.

Dexamethasone : Do NOT Self-Medicate Against COVID-19!

Now that dexamethasone has been found to be the first lifesaving drug against COVID-19, people are starting to self-medicate.

Find out how dexamethasone helps against COVID-19, and why you should NOT use dexamethasone to self-medicate against COVID-19!

Dexamethasone : What Is It?

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that was first produced in 1957, and approved for medical use in 1961.

Used to reduce inflammation in a wide number of conditions – from skin diseases and allergies to certain cancers – it is no longer patented, and is therefore, cheaply and widely available.

Dexamethasone : First COVID-19 Treatment To Save Lives

On 16 June 2020, Professor Peter Hornby reported that preliminary trial results of the Oxford University RECOVERY (Randomised Evaluation of COVid-19 thERapY) study showed that :

Dexamethasone is the first drug to be shown to improve survival in COVID-19This is an extremely welcome result.

The survival benefit is clear and large in those patients who are sick enough to require oxygen treatment, so dexamethasone should now become standard of care in these patients.

Dexamethasone is inexpensive, on the shelf, and can be used immediately to save lives worldwide.

Here is a short summary of their initial insights from the study :

A total of 2104 patients were randomised to receive dexamethasone 6 mg once per day (either by mouth or by intravenous injection) for ten days and were compared with 4321 patients randomised to usual care alone.

Among the patients who received usual care alone, 28-day mortality was highest in those who required ventilation (41%), intermediate in those patients who required oxygen only (25%), and lowest among those who did not require any respiratory intervention (13%).

Dexamethasone reduced deaths by one-third in ventilated patients (rate ratio 0.65 [95% confidence interval 0.48 to 0.88]; p=0.0003) and by one fifth in other patients receiving oxygen only (0.80 [0.67 to 0.96]; p=0.0021).

There was no benefit among those patients who did not require respiratory support (1.22 [0.86 to 1.75; p=0.14).

Based on these results, 1 death would be prevented by treatment of around 8 ventilated patients or around 25 patients requiring oxygen alone.

Dexamethasone : Do NOT Self-Medicate Against COVID-19!

Now, as important as these findings are, it is extremely important that we should NOT use dexamethasone to self-medicate against COVID-19. Here are the reasons why…

Reason #1 : These Are Preliminary Findings

We cannot stress this enough – these are preliminary findings from the Oxford University RECOVERY study. A full data analysis is underway, which should reveal more.

WHO will also coordinate a meta-analysis to understand how and when dexamethasone should be used to treat COVID-19, and update their clinical guidance later.

Reason #2 : Dexamethasone Only Helps Patients On Respiratory Support

The Oxford University RECOVERY press statement explicitly stated that dexamethasone only helped patients requiring respiratory support, reducing deaths for :

  • patients on ventilators : by one-third (33%)
  • patients receiving oxygen : by one-fifth (20%)

There was no benefit among those patients who did not require respiratory support.

If you have mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms – not requiring respiratory assistance – then dexamethasone cannot help improve your outcome.

Reason #3 : Dexamethasone Does Not Destroy SARS-CoV-2

Dexamethasone has no effect on the SARS-CoV-2 virus (which causes COVID-19). It can neither destroy it, or stop it from replicating.

Rather, it appears to prevent or reduce damage from an immune system overreaction – called a cytokine storm – that can occur in severe COVID-19 cases.

Reason #4 : Dexamethasone Suppresses The Immune System

Dexamethasone is an immunosuppressant – about 30 times more potent than cortisol. It will suppress your body’s immune system, and make you more susceptible to infections.

So taking dexamethasone to prevent COVID-19 will make you more likely to get infected by SARS-CoV-2, or other microbes!

Reason #5 : Dexamethasone Has Dangerous Side Effects

Dexamethasone should not be taken unless it is necessary, because it has many dangerous side effects, like :

  • Eyes : Cataracts, glaucoma
  • Endocrine : Hyperglycemia, hirsutism, Cushing syndrome
  • Cardiovascular : Congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias
  • Skin : Acne, striae, bruising, discolouration, thinning, impaired wound healing
  • Other : Weight gain, reduced fertility, fluid retention

You may recall how hydroxychloroquine, which US President Donald Trump touted as safe, killed people who took it to prevent COVID-19.

So please DO NOT self-medicate using dexamethasone to “prevent” or “cure” COVID-19. Dexamethasone cannot cure or prevent COVID-19!

MediaTek Benchmark Cheating : What Happened So Far

MediaTek was caught cheating at smartphone benchmarks, in a stunning expose by Andrei Frumusanu from Anandtech.

Here is what you need to know about the MediaTek benchmark cheating scandal, and what it means to you – the user!

Updated 2020-04-17 : Added UL’s delisting of MediaTek chipsets, and their comments on MediaTek’s actions.

Originally posted 2020-04-09

Benchmark Cheating : What Is It?

The smartphone industry is a cut-throat business, with brands fighting to differentiate their smartphones from their competitors. One of the ways is to demonstrate a clear performance advantage.

Other than the usual ways – using more powerful processor and graphics cores – brands can tune their operating system to focus more on performance, at the expense of battery life.

Some though want to have the best of both worlds – the ability to brag about both high performance, as well as a long battery life.

To do that, unscrupulous brands can cheat by boosting performance only when a benchmark is run. But because this high performance mode doesn’t kick in when other apps are being used, this tricks reviewers into proclaiming that the particular device has great performance as well as great battery life.

Mediatek : Who Are They?

MediaTek is one of the main suppliers of mobile SoCs – the “processors” that power smartphones, tablets and even smart TVs.

They compete against Qualcomm, as a third-party supplier of these system-on-chip platforms to smartphone brands like OPPO, Vivo, and many smaller smartphone brands.

MediaTek Benchmark Cheating : What Did They Do?

According to Anandtech, MediaTek programmed their mobile SoCs to identify many benchmarks, and artificially boost performance, when those benchmarks run.

Hidden in the power_whitelist_cfg.xml configuration file were parameters designed to kick MediaTek-powered smartphones into a special high performance Sports Mode, when benchmarks were detected :

Credit : Anandtech

MediaTek Benchmark Cheating : How Much Of An Effect

Using an anonymised version of PCMark, Anandtech discovered that the cheat increased performance by 33% overall, with up to 75% boost in certain subtests like writing workload :

Writing 5734 10034 +75.0%
Photo Editing 14896 18804 +26.2%
Data Manipulation 5767 5995 +4.0%

MediaTek Benchmark Cheating : What Devices Are Affected?

Anandtech only checked a number of devices, but it looks like pretty much every MediaTek-powered smartphone manufactured in the last few years is affected, even the Sony XA1 from 2016!

MediaTek Response To Cheating Claims

After Anandtech contacted them, MediaTek issued this statement “explaining” their decision to selectively boost performance for benchmarks :

MediaTek follows accepted industry standards and is confident that benchmarking tests accurately represent the capabilities of our chipsets. We work closely with global device makers when it comes to testing and benchmarking devices powered by our chipsets, but ultimately brands have the flexibility to configure their own devices as they see fit. Many companies design devices to run on the highest possible performance levels when benchmarking tests are running in order to show the full capabilities of the chipset. This reveals what the upper end of performance capabilities are on any given chipset.

Of course, in real world scenarios there are a multitude of factors that will determine how chipsets perform. MediaTek’s chipsets are designed to optimize power and performance to provide the best user experience possible while maximizing battery life. If someone is running a compute-intensive program like a demanding game, the chipset will intelligently adapt to computing patterns to deliver sustained performance. This means that a user will see different levels of performance from different apps as the chipset dynamically manages the CPU, GPU and memory resources according to the power and performance that is required for a great user experience. Additionally, some brands have different types of modes turned on in different regions so device performance can vary based on regional market requirements.

We believe that showcasing the full capabilities of a chipset in benchmarking tests is in line with the practices of other companies and gives consumers an accurate picture of device performance.

UL Delists Eight MediaTek Chipsets

On 15 April 2020, UL temporarily delisted PCMark for Android scores for eight MediaTek chipsets.

  • MediaTek Helio G90
  • MediaTek Helio G70
  • MediaTek Helio P95
  • MediaTek Helio P90
  • MediaTek Helio P65
  • MediaTek Helio P60
  • MediaTek Helio P20
  • MediaTek Helio A22

This affected more than 50 smartphones from 25 smartphone brands, including the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, Oppo Reno3 Pro, Vivo Y19, and Realme 6.

UL also called out MediaTek for claiming that they were following “industry standards”, saying :

Using hidden mechanisms to detect benchmarking apps by name and make app-specific performance optimizations is not an “accepted industry standard.” It is, in fact, the very opposite of the accepted standard.

Likewise, benchmark scores based on hidden app-specific optimizations and settings that are enabled by default and not available to the user do not accurately reflect a device’s true performance in everyday use.

Simply put, a device must run a benchmark as if it was any other application. Performance gains must come from reacting to the nature of the workloads in the test rather than the name of the app itself.

MediaTek Benchmark Cheating : Conclusion

MediaTek was caught RED HANDED in the act of cheating at benchmarks. There are no two ways about it.

Their “explanation” that their chipsets are designed to “intelligently adapt to computing pattern” is just a lame excuse.

It cannot explain how their P95 processor delivered much poorer performance on an anonymised PCMark benchmark.

This is backed up by details in the configuration files that explicitly show them triggering a special Sports Mode for benchmarks.

Now, this does not change the performance of your MediaTek-powered smartphones. It just means that their benchmark scores were artificially inflated.

Short of an outright apology and a public promise never to do this again, all benchmark scores of MediaTek-powered smartphones should be considered suspect, and not to be trusted.

AnTuTu : Why They Got Banned From Google Play Store!

If you are wondering why you can no longer find AnTuTu apps on the Google Play Store, that’s because they have been banned and removed!

And guess what got AnTuTu apps banned? Cheetah Mobile…

Cheetah Mobile : An Insidious Developer According To Google

On 20 February 2020, Google posted that they removed nearly 600 apps from the Google Play Store, banning many of their developers for “disruptive ads” and “ad fraud”.

One of those developers – notorious Chinese app developer, Cheetah Mobile, with a history of buying over popular apps to load them with spyware and malicious advertisements.

AnTuTu : Banned From Google Play Store!

And now, it appears that AnTuTu have also been affected by the Google ban hammer, with these apps removed :

  • AnTuTu Benchmark
  • AnTuTu 3DBench
  • AITuTu

Why? It appears those AnTuTu apps were banned, because AnTuTu found to be associated with Cheetah Mobile :

  • Cheetah Mobile CEO Fu Sheng is listed as the Chairman of Beijing AnTuTu Technology Co. Ltd
  • The AnTuTu privacy policy link used the Cheetah Mobile (cmcm.com) domain.

AnTuTu Shares Their Point Of View

AnTuTu clarified the issue in their statement to Android Police that :

  • Cheetah Mobile was merely an investor and shareholder, but they remain independent.
  • They purchased and used the legal services from Cheetah Mobile, so the privacy policy link used their domain.
  • They are now working to change their “legal supplier”.
  • Listing Fu Sheng as the Chairman of Beijing AnTuTu Technology Co. Ltd was a requirement of “the investors”.
  • They have already asked Cheetah Mobile to solve these problems.

AnTuTu apps are still available as APK downloads on their website, but installing them outside of Google Play is not without risks, so caveat emptor!

Why ASUS Cannot Blame AMD For Overheating ROG Cards

ASUS blamed AMD for the overheating problems affecting their ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700 / 5700 XT cards, and it’s really quite ridiculous.

Find out what’s going on, and why ASUS is WRONG to blame AMD for their overheating ROG cards!

Overheating ROG RX 5700 Cards : Why Is ASUS Blaming AMD?

The ASUS ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700 XT and Radeon RX 5700 are two of the more premium and expensive RX 5700 series graphics cards in the market.

Instead of using the reference AMD design, both ASUS ROG cards use premium alloy chokes, solid polymer capacitors, triple fans with axial fan blades, and a large 2.7-slot cooler.

They also feature the ASUS MaxContact Technology, which allows ASUS says will DOUBLE the contact surface with the GPU for maximum thermal transfer.

Despite such an impressive list of premium power and cooling capabilities, users noticed that their expensive ASUS ROG RX 5700 cards keep overheating.

ASUS finally admitted on Valentine’s Day 2020, that their cooler (with MaxContact Technology) was not secured tightly enough.

However, ASUS blamed AMD for that mistake, claiming that they recommended a mounting pressure that was much too low.

They actually penned an article, and created this pressure vs temperature chart to prove that they were not at fault, and users should blame AMD.

Why ASUS Cannot Blame AMD For Overheating ROG Cards

The more we analysed this issue, the more we realised how absurd ASUS claims were.

Reason #1 : AMD Recommendations Are For Their Reference Design

We do not have access to AMD’s engineering specifications, but logically, their recommended mounting pressure would be for their reference design only.

Both ASUS ROG Strix cards use a custom 2.7-slot cooler design, with triple fans, and the ASUS MaxContact Technology. They even come with a reinforced frame, presumably to support higher mounting pressures.

So it would not be logical for the brilliant engineers at ASUS to simply use whatever mounting pressure AMD recommended for the reference design.

Reason #2 : ASUS Reference Cards Did Not Overheat

ASUS also offers reference design models like many other brands, but that card does NOT have an overheating problem.

So it shows clearly that the recommended mounting pressure worked when applied to the AMD reference design.

Reason #3 : ASUS Only Discovered The Right Pressure After Extended Tests

This is a puzzling statement, because it suggests that they shipped their ROG Strix cards without performing enough tests to determine the optimal mounting pressure for their custom cooler.

One would also expect ASUS to perform stress tests on these premium card designs, to make sure they work properly… before they are qualified for production.

While it is possible for any product to have bugs, overheating due to loose screws seem hard to miss…

Reason #4 : Even ASUS TUF Cards Are Overheating!

We should remember that the TUF Gaming versions of both cards also have overheating issues, albeit for a different reason.

Their impressively large coolers were found to lack proper cooling for the memory chips (XT model), or had no cooling at all (non-XT model).

That led to impressive memory temperatures that were far in excess of their rated specifications, and more than enough to boil water while you game.

Fortunately for AMD, ASUS could not blame them for that terrible design decision. But that exposed the sobering fact that ASUS was not above cutting corners in their cards…

Recommended : ASUS TUF RX 5700 Cards Are Also Overheating, Remember?

Reason #5 : No Other Brands Are Affected

This overheating issue does not seem to be a problem with other brands with custom coolers.

And as far as we can tell, reference designs from ASUS and other brands do not have overheating issues.

So it would be interesting to see ASUS explain why only their ROG Strix RX 5700 and ROG Strix RX 5700 XT cards are overheating…

Should We STOP Buying AMD Radeon Cards From ASUS?

No, ASUS cards based on AMD reference designs are perfectly fine. And the current slew of ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700 / 5700 XT cards now come with properly tightened coolers.

ASUS Radeon RX 5700 XT (Reference)

ASUS Radeon RX 5700 (Reference)

ASUS ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700 XT

ASUS ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700

But you should definitely not buy the TUF models, which lack proper memory cooling. Get the new TUF EVO models instead.

ASUS TUF RX 5700 Cards Are Also Overheating, Remember?

While ASUS is blaming AMD for their overheating ROG Strix cards, we should remember that ASUS TUF Radeon RX 5700 cards are also overheating…

Let’s look at WHY these TUF Gaming cards are overheating, and HOW they reflect the shortcuts that ASUS are apparently taking with their cards

ASUS ROG + TUF RX 5700 Cards Are Overheating!

Not only are ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT cards overheating, their TUF Gaming brethren are also overheating. But they are overheating due to different reasons.

The ASUS ROG Strix cards are overheating because their coolers were not screwed tightly enough, so their GPUs were not being cooled properly.

The ASUS TUF Gaming cards are overheating because their coolers either lacked proper cooling for their GDDR6 memory chips, or did NOT provide any cooling at all.

After months of complaints, ASUS finally admitted what users already knew months ago – that the ROG Strix cooler wasn’t properly mounted.

But instead of just admitting and correcting their mistake, ASUS blamed AMD for recommending reference mounting pressures that were way too low.

You can read about their blame AMD effort in our article, ASUS Blames AMD For Overheating ROG RX 5700 Cards!

The good news, for ROG Strix users, is that ASUS will (FINALLY) be providing replacement screws to fix the problem.

ASUS TUF Gaming RX 5700 Cards Are Also Overheating, Remember?

When ASUS refused to send a review sample to awesome guys at Hardware Unboxed, the Internet funded their purchase, and lo behold, they discovered why ASUS was so reticent about sending them a sample!

They discovered that the ASUS TUF Gaming RX 5700 XT card did not have proper cooling for their GDDR6 memory, while the non-XT version had NO COOLING for the memory chips at all!

See that thin piece of metal? That’s what ASUS uses as a heat-spreader for the XT version of their TUF Gaming card. The non-XT version doesn’t even have this!

Even with a heat-spreader, the memory chips on the TUF Gaming Radeon RX 5700 XT were hitting 104°C – far above their maximum operating temperature!

Frankly, we have no idea how these cards actually passed pre-production validation tests. After all, ASUS boasts that they put their TUF Gaming cards through a 144-hour validation program to ensure “rigorous performance and reliability standards“.

Surely, the ASUS engineering team would have noticed during that 144-hour validation program that the memory chips were hot enough to fry eggs?

Overheating ASUS TUF Gaming RX 5700 : New Models, But No Fix!

After this issue was exposed, ASUS came up with new TUF EVO versions, with improved memory cooling.

Unfortunately, they are NOT going to offer users of their TUF Gaming versions a fix or replacement.

Perhaps, with sufficient public pressure, ASUS can be convinced to do the right thing, and replace their badly-designed TUF cooler with the improved TUF EVO cooler.

So it is up to us to REMEMBER, and REMIND EVERYONE, that TUF Gaming Radeon RX 5700 and Radeon RX 5700 XT cards are also overheating, not just their more expensive ROG Strix brethren.

Of course, ASUS cannot blame AMD for overheating memory chips… LOL!

But if their GDDR6 memory supplier needs to take the blame, we hope they will bite the bullet and take the hit, so poor TUF Gaming users do not have to live with memory chips so hot they can boil water…

Five PR Lessons From The BlackBerry KEY2 Faux Pas! (Updated)

The PR team representing BlackBerry in Malaysia seems to have graduated from the Trump PR University. Tone deaf and arrogant, they shocked the Malaysian tech media last week with an offensive BlackBerry KEY2 email. Let’s take a look at what this BlackBerry PR team wrote, and find out what PR lessons we can learn from the BlackBerry KEY2 faux pas.

Updated @ 2018-07-20 : We added new information and viewpoints from both the media and PR practitioners on this issue.

Originally posted @ 2018-07-17

The BlackBerry KEY2 Faux Pas

On 13 July 2018 (yes, Friday the Thirteenth!), BlackBerry’s PR representative sent everyone who attended the media launch four days earlier an email on the BlackBerry KEY2 review samples. This was what they all received :

From what we understand, most took exception to the “cocky” way the email was written, including…

  • the portrayal that the Malaysian tech media are begging for a review unit.
  • the requirement that the BlackBerry KEY2 (Price Check) be collected and returned PERSONALLY at their office.
  • threatening to charge the media for the loss or damage of the BlackBerry KEY2 review sample
  • threatening to charge the media not just for the replacement of the KEY2, but also repairs costs. In other words, if they damage the review sample, they have to pay BlackBerry the cost of a new KEY2 AND the cost of repairing the damaged device.

To be fair, the last one may be due to bad grammar. After all, the email was replete with bad grammar and spelling.

A few PR practitioners we spoke to were horrified that such a poorly-worded email. Even if it was written by an intern or junior executive, it would have been vetted by a senior team member. It was, ultimately, an unfortunate email that could have been better written.

What Happened At The BlackBerry KEY2 Event?

We were not at the BlackBerry KEY2 (Price Check) media launch, but this was what we gathered… My media friends, please correct me if I’m wrong.

  • Everyone at the event was asked to fill in a review request form. So it was not so much they received a deluge of requests, they just got everyone to fill in a request form…
  • They were also asked to write their own media profile – what their publication is all about, their target audience, their STATISTICS, etc… which suggests that they did not do their homework… or have any idea who they invited to their own event!
  • At the event, a BlackBerry rep told the tech media that there are enough “seeding units” for everyone who attended. Yet in their email, they now claimed that they have more requests than actual review samples. Just some “truthful hyperbole” in Trump-speak?
  • The term “seeding unit” is used when the brand offers you a “keeper unit“, not a loaner. They should advise their clients not to use such terms, lest it leads to misunderstanding.

Naturally, that email offended many Malaysian tech journalists, many who spoke to us earlier about this, suggesting that perhaps we should write about it to start a conversation on such bad PR practices. Here are some choice quips :

“No wonder your phone is DYING sales wise. Good luck.”

“No thanks. We are trying to help you, not the other way around.”

“Pure nonsense. I loled at their email.”

The only similar incident in recent time to receive such derision from the Malaysian tech media was the Ming Hua News insanity. Just like we did back then, let’s take a look at what we can all learn from this BlackBerry KEY2 faux pas.

PR Lessons From The BlackBerry KEY2 Faux Pas

1. Humility Is ALWAYS A Great PR Investment

When you were top dog, sure, you can strut about and spit into the faces of tech journalists. But when you officially hit 0% market share in 2017, there’s no harm investing in some humility.

Frankly, humility is ALWAYS a great PR investment even when you’re at the top of the world. You never know when your fortunes may change, and the tables turn. Besides… humility is completely FREE! 😀

2. Do Your Homework!

Asking us to fill in our own profile means you have no idea who you invited to your event. Can you imagine inviting complete strangers to your daughter’s 16th birthday party?

And how can you ask publications to share their stats in such a public manner? Because they are private and confidential information, you will end up with conflated or completely fake numbers.

Many tech publications have media kits, with a bit of history and some recent stats. Even if you don’t have time to do your own research, try asking for their media kits.

3. You Need Us More Than We Need You

[adrotate group=”2″]

This is an honest statement of fact. BlackBerry lost its cachet a long time ago, flailing from failure to failure. Now, more than ever, you need the media to give you a chance to rise from the ashes.

Burning bridges with the media, at this point, is the very epitome of PR harakiri. Utterly senseless.

4. Don’t. Ever. Threaten. Us.

Seriously.

Threats are never a good way to encourage the media to HELP YOU reach out to your potential customers.

Who on Earth is going to spend time, money and effort to help you if you are threatening to punish them?

Not helping you means less work, not less money. Think about that.

5. We Are Not Your Useful Idiots

Some tech brands and PR companies treat the media as their “unpaid marketing departments” or as the Russians would put it – “useful idiots“. Well, we are neither.

If you can’t treat us with respect, don’t expect any from us. Remember – your KPIs are not our KPIs. We don’t owe you anything, because guess what – we don’t work for you!

Who’s The Person / PR Company?

It does NOT matter. We censored the details because it’s not about the person or PR team or PR company. We are not in the business of targeting any person or company.

We brought up this issue because the Malaysian tech media community felt that this was the perfect example of the (occasional) bad practices they have had to deal with. It was meant to start a conversation on how things can be better executed, to avoid misunderstandings and cultivate a culture of mutual respect.

This conversation has been a long time coming. Now that it’s out in the open, it’s good to see PR companies and the tech media community actively discussing it. May it lead to a healthier relationship for everyone! 😀

Tech Journalists Should NEVER Do What Ming Hua News Just Did Rev. 7

A local blog (明华网 Ming Hua News) just pissed off the Malaysian tech media fraternity, and MSI, one of the world’s largest computer hardware manufacturers. What Ming Hua News did is a great lesson in what you should NEVER do, if you’re starting up a tech website and actually want it to survive.

In this article, we will detail the numerous “mistakes” he made, and why you should never make the same mistakes. In the past 20 years, we have seen our fair share of jealousy- or arrogance-fueled rage binges. So let us share some advice with those who want to break into the online tech scene.

Please note that we intentionally blurred the face of the Ming Hua News blogger in all our pictures, and will not name him, because the purpose of this article is to educate him (or other people with similar ideas). Even though he created a lot of havoc, he too deserves a chance to repent and improve himself. Just as we all do. We also understand that he is only 17 years old – a minor.

For easier digestion, we broke the article into six parts :

What Did Ming Hua News Do? (Part 1)
  • He Gatecrashed A Pizza Hut Event
  • He Insulted People For No Reason
  • He Plagiarised Two Websites
  • He Tried To Gatecrash An MSI Event
  • He Harassed MSI Staff For Freebies
What Did Ming Hua News Do? (Part 2)
  • He Cheated At The MSI Public Games
  • He Harassed The Female Influencers & Models
  • He Picked A Fight With MSI…

What Did Ming Hua News Do? (Part 3)
  • He Stole Photos From Another Website!
  • And Then Picked Another Fight…
  • Before Plagiarising Another Site

  • Build Your Reputation & Readership
  • Be Nice To Everyone
  • Do NOT Plagiarise!!!

Updated @ 2017-10-27 : Added a new page [13] on his latest brawl with MSI, and attack on the female influencer HXA. We also added a comment by his friend [14], and the identity of the gamer he insulted [15]. This will also be our last update on this trainwreck.

Updated @ 2017-10-21 : Added a new page [11] detailing an incriminating video his friend posted, as well as his insincere (and inaccurate) letter of apology. Also added confirmation that MSI never received a letter or email from him demanding for an apology [12].

Updated @ 2017-10-20 : Added notes on why we blurred the face of the Ming Hua News blogger [9], and one of the female influencer he harassed [10].

Updated @ 2017-10-19 : Added more details about the harassment of the female influencers [7], and clarified how he cheated at the MSI public games [8].

Updated @ 2017-10-18 : Added a new page with new / updated sections on cheating at games [3], the harassment of MSI staff [1] and female influencers [2]. Also added new evidence of plagiarism [4][5].

What Did Ming Hua News Do? (Part 1/5)

1. He Gatecrashed A Pizza Hut Event

On 10 October 2017, Pizza Hut launched their first digital concept store, and invited the Malaysian tech media to the launch event. The Ming Hua News blogger was not invited but gatecrashed the event anyway. It was not his first time either. He gatecrashed a Meizu event earlier as well.

Pro Tip #1 : Don’t gatecrash. Enquire politely with the company hosting the event, or their PR representatives, if you may also attend. Generally, they want more coverage (not less!), and will be glad to host you if they have enough space.

2. He Insulted People For No Reason

For no apparent reason, he complained to random people at the Pizza Hut event that various members of the media were “fat” and “eating like beggars“. Word got around quickly that this new kid on the block not only gatecrashed the event, but was being exceedingly and unnecessarily rude.

Pro Tip #2 : It’s suicide socially and professionally to call your peers “fat” and “eating like beggars”, even if they are truly fat slobs eating like beggars. Instead, slap them on the back with a hearty laugh and say, “Hey, reserve some of the pizza for me, bro!

[adrotate group=”1″]

3. He Plagiarised Two Websites

After attending the event, he committed the greatest faux pas of them all – plagiarising from not one, but two, tech websites. He literally copied (word for word) the Chinese article from MDROID, and the English article from TechNave.

This is beyond comprehension because he could have copied off the official press release. Instead, he chose to copy from other websites, ad verbatim. That naturally turned the Malaysian tech media against him.

Pro Tip #3 : If you are too lazy to write an original copy for an event, most companies provide a nice press release that you can copy and paste to your heart’s content. If you must commit a grievous sin, let it be worthy of a Nobel Prize.

4. He Tried To Gatecrash An MSI Event

Less than a week later, he tried to gatecrash the launch of the world’s largest MSI Concept Store.

MSI organised a morning session for the press, and an afternoon session for the public. Because he was not invited to the media event, he did not know that it started at 10 AM. By the time he arrived, it was over. Yet he insisted on signing in as a member of the media, probably for the goodie bag.

He was informed that the media event was over, and he was not even on the invited list. In fact, no one on the MSI team knew him.  But he refused to leave and hung around the counter instead.

Pro Tip #4 : See Pro Tip #1. Forget about the goodie bag. Your reputation is worth FAR MORE than a goodie bag. If they refuse to let you in, or tell you that the event is over, don’t insist on gaining entry or a goodie bag.

Pro Tip #5 : Instead, take the opportunity to introduce yourself and get to know the brand’s team, or their PR representatives.

5. He Harassed MSI Staff For Freebies

After being denied the exquisite pleasure of signing in as a member of the Malaysian media fraternity, he hung around the counter harassing the MSI staff members. He hounded them for free gifts, food and drinks, while complaining that they were “indifferent” to him.

[adrotate group=”2″]

Things got so bad, they almost called security to escort him out. In the end, they gave him some water and cupcakes, as well as some freebies, including an MSI backpack, just to get him to stop harassing them.

Pro Tip #6 : NEVER harass the folks managing a major event. They’re often too busy to deal with “special requests”. If they do not provide you food and drinks, PLEASE DON’T BEG. Your reputation is worth FAR MORE than some sandwiches and coffee!

Pro Tip #7 : See Pro Tip #4. If you absolutely must have that cute MSI dragon figurine, wait until things quiet down and then ask… POLITELY… if you may have one because you just LOOOOOOVE the MSI dragon. DO NOT COMPLAIN if they decline. It’s not the end of the world!

What Did Ming Hua News Do? (Part 2/5)

6. He Cheated At The MSI Public Games

He even cheated at the games that MSI organised for the public. Everyone received a card to be stamped when they completed a game at the MSI Concept Store. On completing four games (and getting all four different stamps – 2 red, 1 blue and 1 black), they would receive a reward.

He came with two friends, so they received three cards. He managed to get two of the cards “stamped” using ink transferred from the hands of an MSI staff member. They knew he was cheating, but gave him the two rewards to avoid trouble. However, he couldn’t do it for the third card.

Instead of playing all four games to complete the third card, he played one game and folded his card to “stamp” the wet ink from that one stamp into three duplicates. Genius! When they pointed out that he cheated (because he had four black stamps), he threw a tantrum and stormed off.

Later, they discovered that he somehow managed to snatch a stamp to properly stamp his card himself. In the end, he received 3 rewards after completing only one game.

Pro Tip #8 : Follow the fucking rules. Why cheat when you are guaranteed the reward after completing all four games? Cheating for a freebie is idiotic. You’re trading what little reputation you have for a trinket.

7. He Harassed The Female Influencers & Models

Multiple sources confirmed that harassed the female influencers and models that MSI invited. He was overheard asking one girl in particular, “Did you buy your followers?” and “Why are you so ugly?” in an “interview”. He also allegedly told her, “Your phone number is not worth my time“.

This picture of one of the targeted female influencers was blurred to protect her privacy

He also called the other female influencers and models ugly, even while he kept sneaking into their selfies and taking close-up photos without permission. He even encouraged other people at the event to hug the girls for his photos. Here are some paraphrased quotes :

[adrotate group=”2″]

MW : He called me ugly and kept harassing me.

GS : Yeah, when you walked away, he kept asking other people to take pictures with me, and asked them to hug me. I said no with a fake smile. I don’t know what he did with the pictures he took.

GS : He also called HXA ugly when she refused to give him the free gift.

MW : He kept squeezing in when I took my photos, and when I went to take photos with HXA, he kept snapping random close up photos of us. He even told us “How can you come here when you’re so ugly?”

GS : I felt bad for pushing his head away to take my photos, but I don’t feel bad about that now. I don’t know who he was, yet he kept putting his face into my shots.

In an email from one of his friends who was there :

he say the female influencer is an aunty

Pro Tip #9 : DON’T BE RUDE! It does not help you, and no one is going to answer such ridiculous questions!

Pro Tip #10 : DON’T intrude into other people’s personal spaces without permission! If they say no, it means NO. NOT TRY HARDER!!!

8. He Picked A Fight With MSI…

After the event, he wrote an article criticising MSI Marketing Manager Pia for discriminating against “small media“, and hurting his feelings. He also claimed he contacted MSI for a written letter of apology. Well, he certainly did not receive a response to his demand for an apology.

隔天,该活动即被某网络媒体申诉没有接到邀请,还被该MSI的市场部经理PIA侮辱道“现场都是媒体龙头老板,你只是个小媒体,我们不邀请”,让该媒体记者深感受伤,感觉被歧视。

The next day, the activity is a network media complaint received no invitation was also the MSI Marketing Manager PIA insulting way “live is the leading media owner, you’re just a little media, we do not invite” was deeply wounded by the reporters, feel they’ve been discriminated against.

该媒体也尝试联络MSI给予书面的致歉函,但截稿之前都没有得到相关公关部的回应。

The media has attempted to contact MSI to give a written letter of apology, but before the deadline had not been related to the activities of response.

Despite his claim he wrote to MSI for an apology, we confirmed that MSI never received any letter or email asking for an apology. In fact, their staff members refused to give the Ming Hua News blogger their name cards.

A day later, he posted on Facebook an apology for offending any members of the media and his fans with this article, but insisted that MSI should publicly apologise.

[adrotate group=”2″]

新闻稿(对外公布)
Press Release (Public Announcement)

我们对于今日闹得沸沸扬扬的MSI爆料深感抱歉如果得罪了众媒体与读者甚至是粉丝朋友。我们致上万二分的歉意。也希望该事件会告一段落。
We are deeply sorry if we offended other members of the media, and our fans and readers. We hope this incident will now end.

但是文章我们是不会删除的,因为句句属实。
But we will not delete the article because it is true.

MSI Gaming 市场部应该出面道歉澄清。
MSI Gaming Marketing Department should publicly apologise.

Even worse, he continued his attacks on Pia by falsely claiming that she was fired over the incident. He also mocked those who supported her against his (false) claims. In an article posted on 18 October, he said :

传闻MSI市场部经理PIA因歧视小媒体风波被辞退,今日在面书突然被讨论起来。
I heard that MSI Marketing Manager Pia was fired because she discriminated against small media.
但经明华网查证,PIA依然在该公司上班。
But Ming Hua News checked and confirmed she’s still working in the company.
PIA被称为亲民PR,对科技媒体都很支持,深受各界媒体老板的爱戴。
Pia is known as the PR that the technology media support, and the media bosses love.
经风波燃烧,媒体老板都出闸护航PIA,可谓壮观。
It’s amazing to see the media bosses protect Pia in this controversy

Pro Tip #11 : See Pro Tip #4. Don’t let your pride get the better of you. If they refuse to invite you to their events, think of it as their loss – their events will not get covered in your awesome website or blog! 🙂

Pro Tip #12 : And NEVER attack a brand or their PR representatives on the Internet, whether it’s on your website or social media. That’s just suicide socially and professionally.

9. He Stole Photos From Another Website!

Ming Hua News’ streak of ill-advised moves did not end with his demand for an apology from MSI. In that same article, he stole two of the photos from Hitech Century. This was after he was caught plagiarising less than a week earlier. #facepalm

Pro Tip #13 : If you need to borrow someone’s photos for an article, ask them for permission. At least credit them for the photos.

Pro Tip #14 : Most companies will also provide official photos that you can edit and use without attribution. Use them!

10. And Then Picked Another Fight…

If that’s not enough, the Ming Hua News blogger picked another fight, this time with Pokde, an established Malaysian tech website. He targeted Mubashar Aftab of Pokde, calling him “fat” and advising him to “go on a diet“.

我可以告诉你的是,我没在怕
Let me tell you this, I’m not afraid.

就因为一个玩笑就耿耿于怀。
It’s just a joke, but you overreacted.

还真像想不到Pokde.net的作者可以有那么多的支持者。
I cannot image that the Pokde.net boss has so many supporters.

真是小看你了,
I really underestimated you.

人肥没有关系,只要有心减。
It’s okay to be fat, as long as you have the desire to go on a diet.

相信我的墙也是有很多媒体界的朋友,
I believe my site has many media friends as well.

你可以一起合作打倒我这个小媒体,
You guys can gang up on us small media.

但是就算政府打压,
But even if the authorities come down on me,

[adrotate group=”2″]

我是媒体的一天,
As long as I’m a member of the media,

我就不会放弃。
I won’t give up.

谢谢鼓励我,支持我,
Thank you to all who encourage me, support me,

试图打倒我的每一位。
Even the ones who try to take me down.

我都很爱你们。
I love you all.

谢谢你们一直以来的关注。
Thank you for the attention.

我不会停火。你尽管去告我,我会继续上诉。
I won’t stop firing. Sue me. I will continue to complain.

Pro Tip #15 : NEVER pick a fight with other members of the media. It’s one thing to confront a bully or stand up for your rights, it’s quite another thing to START a public fight with derogatory comments for no good reason.

11. Before Plagiarising Another Site

After we shared this article with him, and he promised to read and learn from it, he plagiarised another Malaysian tech website. This time, he copied Vtechgraphy‘s post on the Huawei Mate 10… literally word for word!

Pro Tip #16 : The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. STOP PLAGIARISING after you have been caught plagiarising!!!

What Did Ming Hua News Do? (Part 4/5)

12. His Friend Released A Video Implicating Three Of Them Updated!

As if the blowback over the past few days did not happen, his friend posted a video that showed the Ming Hua News blogger and two of his friends insulting and harassing not just the female influencers and models, but also one of the gamers MSI invited to the event for the tournament, as well as an MSI staff member.

Please note that we intentionally blurred the faces of the Ming Hua News blogger’s friends, because the purpose of this article is to educate them (or other people with similar ideas). In addition, the boy recording the video is only 16 years old – a minor.

Let’s start with the MSI staff member. Earlier in the video, he appears to be very friendly with them. But in a later segment, his demeanour has changed. We don’t know what happened in between, but this was how the conversation went :

[adrotate group=”2″]

[They pushed the camera close to his face]

MSI Staff Member : What?

MHN : Can I record my video here? Only over here?

[MHN’s friend, the videographer nods]

MHN : Let me put my head in(to the frame)

MSI Staff Member : I will not look into the camera.

MHN : You don’t want face (respect)?

MSI Staff Member (sarcastically) : Correct! I don’t want any face (respect).

Then they went to harass one of the gamers (SongSen) MSI invited to the event.

[They pushed the camera close to his face, which startled and annoyed him]

SongSen : Yes?

MHN : I want to interview you.

[SongSen starts to walk away]

MHN : How old are you?

MHN’s Friend : Interview? The guy is already walking away.

SongSen : 17 years old [as he walks away]

MHN Or His Friend : Liar!

MHN Or His Friend : You can drive when you’re just 17 years old?

MHN Or His Friend : I don’t believe.

The camera then panned to the female influencers and models, and they started insulting them.

MHN : You see. It’s different if you’re beautiful. The ugly ones end up standing here [referring to the female models].

Female Influencer (obviously annoyed at the insult, replied sarcastically) : What can we do? We are only worthy of standing here because we are tall.

[adrotate group=”2″]

MHN’s Friend : She’s not very tall.

MHN : You’re correct. She’s actually very short. She’s just wearing high heels to make herself look tall.

They shove the camera into her face. She turned away and shrugged before turning back…

Female Influencer : Why are you so rude?

MHN : I learned it from you, big sister. You’re my sifu.

Pro Tip #17 : NEVER POST a video that incriminates you… and your friends!

13. He Posted An Insincere Apology Letter

We have been telling him for days now to STFU, if he doesn’t want to apologise for being so rude and childish. Instead of taking our advice, he posted a public letter of apology that was neither sincere nor accurate. Here is the English translation (with our comments in red) :

A Public Apology

I’m sorry, everyone!

Ming Hua News would like to apologize to all media friends, boss, as well as MSI, MSI staffs, MSI guests, Gummy, HXA, supporters and other people.

I would like to clarify that my apology doesn’t mean that MSI Marketing Manager Pia Huang didn’t insult MHN. I admit I shouldn’t reveal the brand and media names, but file a complaint through the right way.

Get this straight – a refusal to acknowledge you as a member of the media is not an insult. It is a statement of fact. Just because you have a blog does not make you a journalist.

The event you were not invited to had already ended when you arrived. Even if you were invited, they would have been right to turn you away because news flash -> THE EVENT WAS OVER.

Here is another piece of advice for you. Real journalists go to events to cover them, not collect goodie bags and free gifts.

Pia does not owe you an apology. You owe her an apology.

As for those articles that I was caught with plagiarism, I have deleted all the posts. I would like to apologize to TechNave, Mdroid, Vtech, Zing and other media. I hope that you guys could give me a chance to be better, I promise this kind of thing not to happen again.

From what we understand, there are other plagiarised articles that have not been removed. Please do NOT wait until they are publicly exposed before taking action. You should know which articles you plagiarised. You should remove them ASAP, even if their authors are unaware of your plagiarism.

As for the Pizza Hut article, we were told by the PR to publish the article. It wasn’t plagiarism or taking the photos from other sites without permission, those are false statements. Those photos were taken by me the day after I went to the shop myself, you can ask the store manager for proof.

The PR agency confirmed earlier that they did not ask you to cover the event, much less plagiarise the coverage of the event from two websites. They did not even know who you were, although they gave you a printed press release as part of their goodie bag, that you could have copied if you were not able to write an actual article.

The photos were also taken from Technave and MDROID, some with watermarks still visible. You may have taken photos at the event, but the pictures in the two Pizza Hut articles you posted were not yours. We have the screenshots to prove this.

As for me accidentally calling the editor of Pokde.net fat during the event, I apologize for that, but I didn’t say they eat like a beggar and other insults. I didn’t do it purposely, I thought it was a joke but didn’t know that you would feel offended. I apologize for that and I will make sure to be more cautious with my words next time.

One does not “accidentally” call people fat or ugly, just like a rapist does not accidentally fall and rape a girl. Multiple witnesses have confirmed that you told them that people at the event were “eating like beggars”.

As for the female guest harassment, I’m here to confirm that this isn’t true. I will report to MCMC and police if it’s necessary, as well as taking law action to those people who created this false statement.

Your friend posted a video that showed the three of you harassing and insulting not just the girls, but also a gamer and MSI staff member. If you feel so strongly that your own friend edited the video to make it look like you insulted them, please make an official complaint with the MCMC and police.

If you have any question or dissatisfaction, please email to minghuacs@gmail.com. There is no point for commenting the post to attack, as well as posting my personal info.

We agree. While we strongly dislike what you have done, we do not believe you should be doxxed. We also hope you will listen to our advice… and STOP.

I hope the public can give me a chance to be better, for a brighter Malaysia media’s future. Thanks to the advice from a media friend, I decided to apologize and hope this incident could end. Thank you!

As we mentioned in this article, people will give you a second chance, but only if you repent and improve yourself. That starts with you being honest about what you did, and apologise to those you insulted and harassed. Especially Pia from MSI.

Pro Tip #18 : Be sincere when you apologise, and DON’T LIE in your apology letter. With so many eyes on you, did you not think that people would check your points?

14. He Kept Asking To Attend A Non-Existent MSI Event…

Despite his displeasure with MSI, he seems to be obsessed with them. He actually wrote to them several times, asking to be invited to a non-existent MSI event.

MSI Malaysia sponsored the Red Bull Coliseum Season 2 tournament finals at Sunway Pyramid from 27 to 29 October. This is a public event that is open to everyone free of charge.

Even though he can easily sign up for the event and attend it as a member of the public, he wrote several times to MSI, asking to be invited to the media event for the Red Bull Coliseum finals. THERE IS NO MEDIA EVENT. But apparently, he did not believe it and kept emailing them.

His persistent “requests” likely led to this response by Sean from MSI :

Dear Minghua editor team,

Greetings, We are sorry that [you] will not be invited as our guest / media due to the incident happened at MSI Store Opening Ceremony, there were news stated that your team has published which contains MSI local staff personal information and the information shared was considered false. Thus MSI Global Headquarter Legal team is taking some needed action.

Before the official  information and letter release, as MSI Malaysia we will like to inform Minghua News editor team, that MSI Malaysia has right to refuse any kind of interview, contact, announcement. And please be noted that MSI Malaysia local staff has the right to remain anonymous.

Thank you & wish you have a nice day.

Pro Tip #19 : If your request to join an event is rejected, take the high road and accept it. It’s not the end of the world. You can always cover another event, or another company.

Pro Tip #20 : Irrespective of how famous or important you think you are, companies have the right to refuse you access to their events. They’re not obliged to grant a member of the media access their events, just like you are not obliged to let them enter your home!

15. He Doubled Down…

On receiving the email, the Ming Hua News blogger shot back with a new post :

MSI不接受道歉!否认整起事件扬言控告明华网!
MSI Refused To Accept Apology! Denies Any Wrong & Threatens To Take Legal Action Against Ming Hua!

Ming Hua initially believed that MSI has accepted an (our) apology, and willing to resolve the misunderstanding. Ming Hua once sent an email to MSI Marketing Department to attend MSI event in SUNWAY PYRAMID, not knowing MSI would reply email stating that they will not invite Ming Hua as media nor guest, meaning MSI do not welcome Ming Hua to attend the event.

MSI 进一步解释说道原因是不满意明华网之前发布的新闻,并指控该新闻造假,不应该公开 MSI 员工的私人资料。邮件内容还提到该公司总部的法律团队将会采取行动对付!
MSI further explained that the reason is they are not satisfied with the news released on Ming Hua and accused it to be a fraud. Ming Hua also should not disclose the personal information of MSI employees. The message also mentions that the legal team at the company’s headquarters will take action against it!

明华网及 MSI 暂时都没有发布任何文稿交代事件,令人好奇 MSI 下一步的行动。
Ming Hua and MSI have not released any further comment for the time being. We wonder what would be MSI’s next action.

明华网发言人表示不会理睬 MSI 的任何声明,对于 MSI 的虚假指控则会静待观察,如有必要也会采取法律行动对付 MSI 和 PIA HUANG 马来西亚 MSI 市场部经理。
A spokesman for Ming Hua said he would not pay any attention to MSI’s statement, and MSI’s false allegations against Ming Hua. We will continue to observe MSI’s action and, if necessary, take legal action against MSI and PIA HUANG MSI Marketing Manager of Malaysia.

[adrotate group=”2″]

Pro Tip #21 : When the other party mentions that legal action is being considered, you should not compound the problem further by then writing an inaccurate public post. We understand, for example, that the Ming Hua blogger sent MSI several emails, not once (as was stated in his public post). That’s just more fodder for the lawyers on the other end.

Pro Tip #22 : When the other party threatens legal action over your disclosure of personal information, please don’t aggravate the situation by sharing even more personal information!

Pro Tip #23 : See Pro TIp #20. You cannot sue a company or their employee for refusing to grant you access to their private event.

16. And Criticised A Female Influencer Online

Then on the morning of 27 October 2017, he criticised the female influencer HXA in a Facebook post.

You may recall that he called her called her “ugly” and an “aunty” at the MSI Concept Store launch. Even though he was seen insulting her on video, she did not appear to insult him in return. In fact, she hasn’t spoken out about this issue at all. Yet, the Ming Hua News blogger posted a picture he took with her, and criticise her for badmouthing him (which she didn’t do publicly, to our knowledge).

Here is a better translation :

After meeting you, I only realise you’re the kind of person who has a poisonous tongue.
Thanks for the lesson. It’s a rare opportunity to meet you in person.

Although this is said to be a more accurate translation :

Just realized you’re really blunt after meeting you in person. Thank you for your advice. It’s was a great opportunity to meet you..

We Are Signing Off

Based on our interactions with him, we believe he will never change. Despite claims that he will take our advice to heart, his actions say otherwise. So, we are going to stop updating this article, and trying to advise him.

We believe MSI will no longer communicate with him, or respond to his messages or emails. This may be due to the legal action they may be taking against him, or just a refusal to deal with him. Either way, that’s their right.

What Should Ming Hua News Have Done?

We all know what it’s like to be young and ambitious. We all understand the desire to be part of the tech scene, to be invited to exclusive events and be amongst the first to try something new. We can all empathise with his burning desire to be accepted by tech companies, associated PR agencies and the tech media fraternity. However, Ming Hua News just did everything that no person aspiring to be a tech journalist should ever do.

Now, what should he have done? What should every aspiring tech journalist do to break into the highly-competitive tech scene?

1. Everyone Starts At The Bottom

Understand this – everyone starts at the bottom. Even famous tech journalists like Anand Lal Shimpi of Anandtech and Dr. Thomas Pabst of Tom’s Hardware started at the ground floor, and worked their way up. No one gets a free pass to the top, so stop fantasising that you will be the exception.

Don’t torpedo your fledging career by demanding access to events and products, without first proving your competence and burnishing your reputation. If you start at the bottom of the ladder, the only way is up. But if you insist on starting at the top, you can only go down…

2. Demonstrate Your Competence

In the tech media industry, competence cannot be faked. You either know your stuff, or you don’t. Tech companies, and to a lesser extent, their PR representatives, can quickly tell if you know the difference between RAM and ROM, or between the CPU and the GPU.

You demonstrate this competence not by talking, but actually writing articles. A SHITLOAD of articles. Start writing, and keep writing. If you don’t have review samples, write a guide. If you can’t write a guide, write a commentary on the latest hardware or software, or mobile device. Keep going at it.

3. Build Your Reputation & Readership

The tech industry evolves very quickly, so you must always be on top of the game. As you build your portfolio of articles and reviews, you will also build your reputation and readership. Both are VERY IMPORTANT because they are the “currency” of the tech industry.

Tech companies and their PR representatives will always look at a tech website’s stats to decide if they are worth the effort and expense to invite to an event, or provide review samples or other considerations. Put yourselves in their shoes. Which of these two websites would YOU invite to your tech event?

Now, let us remember Lesson #1 – we ALL start at the bottom. Like Ming Hua News, we were once at the bottom. But over the years, we built up our reputation and readership with sweat, tears and sleepless nights. If we can do it, so can you!

4. Be Nice To Everyone

It pays to be nice to everyone in the tech industry, whether they are from a tech company, a PR agency, or even a fellow member of the tech media fraternity. Establishing good industry contacts will help you go a long way to being invited to exclusive events and getting access to the latest products.

People also move around a lot, sometimes jumping from one side to another – I will leave you to decide which is the Dark Side, and so on… LOL! But the point is – when they move, they bring with them their opinion of you and your website. They also tend to leave behind some institutional memory. It’s not like the slate is wiped clean with a tech brand when someone leaves their team.

Okay, there will always be some folks who won’t play nice, or don’t respond to your friendly gestures. That’s okay. You can’t win over everyone, so don’t get upset if some people don’t like you anyway. That’s life. Just don’t try and be that asshole that everyone loves to hate.

5. Do NOT Plagiarise!!!

[adrotate group=”2″]

This is the golden rule of journalism – DO NOT PLAGIARISE other people’s work! Just because it is easy to copy and paste does NOT make it okay to do it, even if you think it just took us 15 minutes to whip up.

Since we started in the tech industry back in 1997, we have seen our hard work plagiarised on many occasions. You may think it’s an easy way to quickly build your portfolio of articles and reviews, but nothing gets you blacklisted faster than plagiarising someone else’s work.

Just as it is now so easy for you to copy and paste, it is now also easy for people to detect your plagiarism and spread the news. So NEVER, EVER plagiarise. If you find it hard to write about tech, you are in the wrong industry. Stop, and do something else.

Second Chances

The world is not unkind. The tech industry is not unforgiving. Everyone makes mistakes, after all. Even the most aggrieved person will find it in his / her heart to forgive.

So there are definitely second chances in this industry. The only question is – will YOU acknowledge your mistakes, apologise for them and learn from your mistakes?

AMD Radeon RX 480 Power Draw Controversy Rev. 3.0

After the AMD Radeon RX 480 was officially launched, several websites reported that their cards were drawing substantially more power from the PCI Express bus than the 75 W allowed by the PCI Express specifications. AMD has now come up with responses to this developing controversy.

2016-07-06 : Added a new page on the AMD driver solution, and our take on it.

2016-07-09 : Added a new section on the Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 driver.

Excessive RX 480 Power Draw

The PCI Express specification allows for up to 66 W of power to be supplied by the 12 V line (12 V x 5.5 A) of the PCI Express bus. However, reviewers who have the necessary equipment to measure the power draw from the PCI Express slot have noted that the Radeon RX 480 draws 78-88 W of power from that 12 V line.

If their measurements are correct, the Radeon RX 480 exceeds the PCI Express power draw specification by a minimum of 18% and up to 33%. It also means that the Radeon RX 480 is exceeding its thermal design power (TDP) of 150 watts.

The Implications

The AMD Radeon RX 480 has to be certified to meet the PCI Express specifications to qualify the card as a PCI Express card, for branding and legal purposes. If the Radeon RX 480 does not fulfil its certification requirements, AMD has to fix the issue within 3 months. Failure to do so will result in the Radeon RX 480 being denied the right to be branded and sold as a PCI Express card.

For certain, AMD would certified the Radeon RX 480 to be PCI Express-compliant before the launch. However, independent testing has revealed that the Radeon RX 480 can and do exceed the power draw specifications. Why there is a discrepancy pre- and post-launch is yet unknown.

AMD Responds

Initially, Raja Koduri, Senior Vice President and Chief Architect, Radeon Technologies Group, responded on Reddit that :

Great question and I am really glad you asked.

We have extensive testing internally on our PCIE compliance and RX480 passed our testing. However we have received feedback from some of the reviewers on high current observed on PCIE in some cases.

We are looking into these scenarios as we speak and reproduce these scenarios internally. Our engineering team is fully engaged.

Just two days ago, AMD’s Communications Lead, Garrath Johnson, issued an update on their ongoing investigation of the issue :

As you know, we continuously tune our GPUs in order to maximize their performance within their given power envelopes and the speed of the memory interface, which in this case is an unprecedented 8Gbps for GDDR5.

Recently, we identified select scenarios where the tuning of some RX 480 boards was not optimal. Fortunately, we can adjust the GPUs tuning via software in order to resolve this issue.

We are already testing a driver that implements a fix, and we will provide an update to the community on our progress on Tuesday (July 5, 2016).

We will keep you updated on this developing Radeon RX 480 power draw story, so stay tuned!

New Driver To Correct RX 480 Power Draw

At 3:14 PM on July 6 (GMT+8), AMD’s Communications Lead, Garrath Johnson, emailed us the solution that AMD has developed – a new driver to correct the excessive Radeon RX 480 power draw from the PCI Express bus. Check it out :

We promised an update today (July 5, 2016) following concerns around the Radeon RX 480 drawing excess current from the PCIe bus. Although we are confident that the levels of reported power draws by the Radeon RX 480 do not pose a risk of damage to motherboards or other PC components based on expected usage, we are serious about addressing this topic and allaying outstanding concerns. Towards that end, we assembled a worldwide team this past weekend to investigate and develop a driver update to improve the power draw. We’re pleased to report that this driver—Radeon Software 16.7.1—is now undergoing final testing and will be released to the public in the next 48 hours.

In this driver we’ve implemented a change to address power distribution on the Radeon RX 480 – this change will lower current drawn from the PCIe bus.

Separately, we’ve also included an option to reduce total power with minimal performance impact. Users will find this as the “compatibility” UI toggle in the Global Settings menu of Radeon Settings. This toggle is “off” by default.

Finally, we’ve implemented a collection of performance improvements for the Polaris architecture that yield performance uplifts in popular game titles of up to 3%1. These optimizations are designed to improve the performance of the Radeon RX 480, and should substantially offset the performance impact for users who choose to activate the “compatibility” toggle.

AMD is committed to delivering high quality and high performance products, and we’ll continue to provide users with more control over their product’s performance and efficiency. We appreciate all the feedback so far, and we’ll continue to bring further performance and performance/W optimizations to the Radeon RX 480.

1: Based on data running ’Total War: Warhammer’, ultra settings, 1080p resolution. Radeon Software 16.6.2 74.2FPS vs Radeon Software 16.7.1 78.3FPS; Metro Last Light, very high settings, 1080p resolution, 80.9FPS vs 82.7 FPS. Witcher 3, Ultra settings, 1440p, 31.5FPS vs 32.5, Far Cry 4, ultra settings, 1440p, 54.65FPS vs 56.38FPS, 3DMark11 Extreme, 22.8 vs 23.7  System config: Core i7-5960X, 16GB DDR4-2666MHz, Gigabyte X99-UD4, Windows 10 64-bit. Performance figures are not average, may vary from run-to-run.

Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1

The Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 driver is now available! Here are the compatibility and performance updates that promises to solve the Radeon RX 480 power draw problem :

  • The Radeon RX 480’s power distribution has been improved for AMD reference boards, lowering the current drawn from the PCIe bus.
  • A new “compatibility mode” UI toggle has been made available in the Global Settings menu of Radeon Settings. This option is designed to reduce total power with minimal performance impact if end users experience any further issues.  This toggle is “off” by default.
  • Performance improvements for the Polaris architecture that yield performance uplifts in popular game titles of up to 3%. These optimizations are designed to improve the performance of the Radeon RX 480, and should substantially offset the performance impact for users who choose to activate the “compatibility” toggle.

Also, the Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 driver appears to fix the limited PCI Express bandwidth on the Radeon RX 480, giving it a further boost in performance :

  • Radeon RX 480 limited PCI-E Bandwidth (PCI-E bandwidth is now at the correct speed on the Radeon RX 480) with Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1.

You can download the new drivers below :

Our Opinion

AMD has basically acknowledged that the Radeon RX 480 does indeed draw more power over the PCI Express bus than is allowed by the PCI Express specifications. That is also a tacit acknowledgement that the Radeon RX 480 has a thermal design power (TDP) in excess of 150 W.

They claim that the excessive Radeon RX 480 power draw will not damage the motherboard or related components. However, they also qualify that as limited to “expected usage” – that means using the Radeon RX 480 as is, and not overclocking it.

The Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 driver they just released offers 3 changes :

  • shifting the excessive power draw from the PCI Express bus to the 6-pin PCIe power cable.
  • reduce the power consumption of Radeon RX 480 through a “compatibility” toggle in the driver.
  • improve the Radeon RX 480‘s performance by 3%, to offset the reduced performance when the “compatibility” toggle is enabled

We have a dedicated article covering the Radeon Software 16.7.1, which looks at its performance improvements. You can check it out here -> Radeon Software 16.7.1 Performance Comparison.

Although AMD implied that the performance impact of the “compatibility” toggle is substantially less than 3%, we examined its real impact and how much the Radeon Software 16.7.1 driver’s performance offset it. Check it out in our article – True Performance of the Radeon RX 480 Examined.

Going forward, we expect the Radeon RX 480 cards to eventually ship with an 8-pin PCI Express power connector for “compatibility” reasons.
