Synology Computex 2024 Showcase + Interview!

At Computex 2024, we had the opportunity to tour the Synology showcase, and interview Jason Sin about the new ActiveProtect and AI Console, as well as other forthcoming products!

 

Synology Computex 2024 Showcase!

At Computex 2024, Synology gave us an exclusive tour of their new ActiveProtect appliance, as well as other current and upcoming products!

At 0:36, we started with Synology’s upcoming scale-out file and object storage solution – the GS6200. Powered by GirdStation Manager (GSM), the Synology GS6200 supports between 3 to 96 nodes per cluster, offering up to 20 petabytes of raw capacity per cluster.

A full 96-node Synology GS6200 cluster is capable of supporting up to 150,000 simultaneous uploads and downloads. At 4:56, you can see the actual GS6200 cluster of six nodes in action. They also showed us what it looks like inside of a Synology HC6500 node at 8:36, which has 60 drive bays.

At 10:19, we had an in-depth look at the new Synology ActiveProtect appliance – what it does, and how does it accomplish its objectives. You can also see how easy it is for IT administrators to manage backups using the ActiveProtect Manager software.

At 17:00, Synology showcased its Office Suite of productivity apps, which will soon be enhanced by artificial intelligence. Those AI features will be managed and controlled through Synology AI Console, which will not only verify the API keys for your preferred generative AI services, it will also monitor AI usage, and perform de-identification – filtering out sensitive data in AI requests.

Synology also demoed its BeeStation NAS at 23:12, its Synology Photos app at 27:51, and its BeeDrive portable storage solution at 30:58. Finally, Synology showed us its latest surveillance systems at 33:23.

 

Synology Computex 2024 Interview With Jason Sin!

After the showcase t our, we had the opportunity to sit down with Jason Sin, the Sales Account Manager of Synology to talk about what Synology announced during Computex 2024.

Here are some quick points we gathered from our interview session:

Synology ActiveProtect DP-series

  • one SKU (DP7400) offering 140TB of storage capacity will be available in Q4 2024.
  • it achieves 99% reduction in data transmission through source deduplication.
  • it also speeds up backups through its integrated SSD cache.
  • while he was not able to share (at that time) the size of the SSD cache, Synology late revealed that the DP7400 appliance will use two 4TB SSDs in RAID 1.
  • it can keep costs low by automatically transferring “cold data” to cheaper archiving servers, while maintaining “hot data” in its local storage.

Synology GS6200

  • this is a scale-out file and object storage solution
  • it can support up to 150,000 concurrent transfers (uploads / downloads) per cluster

Synology Surveillance Systems

  • Synology provides AI features like AI analytics, human detection, facial recognition, people counting, etc.
  • Synology will be releasing two new cameras – a fisheye camera, and a zoomable camera which is designed for licence plate recognition, both with some AI features.
  • Synology Surveillance System centralises all cameras, and simplifies the job of the IT administrator.
  • Synology designs its own cameras, which are manufactured by a partner company.
  • They will launch a new camera that will upload all footage to the cloud, and will be subscription-based.
  • These cameras can be used with any NVRs, but if they are paired with Synology NVRs, they will support end-to-end encryption.

Synology AI Console

  • It will support key AI models like ChatGPT, Azure AI, and Gemini.
  • Synology is already using its own generative AI model for customer support service.
  • Synology is planning to eventually release its own generative AI model.
  • Synology AI Console will debut with DSM 7.2.2

Synology Unveils ActiveProtect Data Protection Appliances!

On 5 June 2024, Synology unveiled new ActiveProtect appliances during Computex 2024, starting with the ActiveProtect DP7400!

ActiveProtect is a new series of purpose-built data protection appliances that combine centralised management, with a highly-scalable architecture, to offer up to 2X faster backups, 2:1 deduplication, and up to 99% lower data transmission.

Quick Deployments

It takes less than 10 minutes to deploy the Synology ActiveProtect appliance, and just 15 minutes to start protecting your data.

IT teams can quickly deploy ActiveProtect appliances in minutes and create comprehensive data protection plans via global policies using a centralized console. ActiveProtect is designed to be intuitive, significantly reducing operational overhead.

Role-Based Access Control

Maintain control over data by granting access permissions such as workload restoration, and data viewing rights.

Protect Against Ransomware

Secure your data with flexible immutable backups. Instead of a fixed lock period of repository, Synology ActiveProtect offers a flexible lock period for your immutable backups.

At Computex 2024, Synology only officially unveiled one ActiveProtect model – the DP7400, which is a 2U rackmount appliance.

However, Synology also revealed to us that DP7400 will be followed by two other ActiveProtect appliances – a 2U all-flash array appliance, as well as a thinner 1U rackmount appliance.

Synology ActiveProtect : Cost + Availability

The Synology ActiveProtect DP7400 will be available for deployment in Q4 2024. There is no timeline for the other two unnamed ActiveProtect models.

Synology will offer a simplified storage-based licence for the ActiveProtect appliance:

  • only hardware cost for the first year, with free software licence
  • only software cost for the second year onwards.

While Synology did not reveal the price of the ActiveProtect DP7400, the line-up is expected to provide up to 90% in annual savings over its competitors.

AMD Computex 2024 : A Quick Summary!

For those who missed it, here is a quick summary of new AMD products and technologies that Dr. Lisa Su announced at Computex 2024

AMD Ryzen 9000 Series Desktop Processors

Dr. Lisa Su unveiled the AMD Ryzen 9000 series (codenamed Granite Ridge) of desktop processors, slated for release in July 2024. These processors are built around the Zen 5 microarchitecture, which AMD says will offer a 16% average performance boost over the previous Zen 4 microarchitecture.

Here is the first slew of AMD Ryzen 9000 processors announced at Computex 2024:

  • Ryzen 9 9950X : 16C/32T, up to 5.7 GHz max boost, 80MB L2+L3 cache, 170W TDP
  • Ryzen 9 9900X : 12C/24T, up to 5.6 GHz max boost, 76MB L2+L3 cache, 120W TDP
  • Ryzen 7 9700X : 8C/16T, up to 5.5 GHz max boost, 40MB L2+L3 cache, 65W TDP
  • Ryzen 5 9600X : 6C/12T, up to 5.4 GHz max boost, 38MB L2+L3 cache, 65W TDP

3rd Gen AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series Laptops

Microsoft, HP, Lenovo, and ASUS, unveiled their laptops based on the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen AI 300 series mobile processors.

Ryzen AI is combination of a dedicated AI engine, AMD Radeon graphics engine, and Ryzen processor cores that enable AI capabilities.

5th Gen AMD EPYC Server Processors

Dr. Lisa Su also previewed the 5th Gen AMD EPYC server processors (codenamed Turin), which are on track to launch in H2 2024. Like the new Ryzen 9000 series desktop processors, the 5th Gen EPYC processors are built around the Zen 5 core microarchitecture.

AMD Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2

The new AMD Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 brings together FPGA programmable logic for real-time pre-processing, next-gen AI Engines powered by XDNA technology for efficient AI inference, and embedded CPUs for post-processing to deliver the highest performing single chip adaptive solution for edge AI.

AMD Versal AI Edge Gen 2 devices are available now for early access with over 30 key partners currently in development.

AMD Instinct MI325X Accelerator

The AMD Instinct MI325X accelerator will be available in Q4 2024, offering 288 GB of ultra-fast HBM3E memory.

AMD Instinct MI350 Series

The AMD Instinct MI350 series is expected to debut in 2025, based on the next-generation AMD CDNA 4 architecture. AMD expects it to deliver up to 35X better inference performance compared to the AMD Instinct MI300 series, which is based on the current CDNA 3 architecture.

AMD @ Computex 2021 : Everything They Announced!

On 1 June 2021, AMD kicked off their virtual Computex 2021 press conference, announcing a whole slew of new products and technologies!

Let’s take a look at what AMD announced at Computex 2021!

3rd Gen EPYC Beats Intel Xeon Scalable!

AMD President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su showed how the dual-socket 3rd Gen EPYC 7763 system beat the dual-socket Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 system by 50%!

  • 2P Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 delivered 201,334 Java operations per second
  • 2P AMD EPYC 7763 delivered 301,297 Java operations per second

This is because the EPYC 7763 has far more cores than the Xeon Platinum 8380 – 64 cores versus just 40 cores!

AMD RDNA 2 Coming To Automotive + Mobile!

AMD is working to bring the RDNA 2 gaming architecture to industry leaders in the automotive and mobile segments :

Tesla Model S + Model X

The new infotainment systems in the Tesla Model S and Model X are powered by an AMD Ryzen Embedded APU, with an AMD RDNA 2-based GPU capable of AAA gaming!

Samsung Exynos

The next-generation Samsung Exynos SoC will feature custom AMD RDNA 2-based graphics IP, that will introduce raytracing and variable rate shading capabilities to flagship mobile devices!

AMD Ryzen 5000G Desktop APUs

Dr. Lisa Su also announced that they are introducing two AMD Ryzen 5000G series desktop APUs, that will be available to the DIY market starting 5 August 2021.

AMD Ryzen 7 5700G

The AMD Ryzen 7 5700G has an 8-core, 16-thread processor, with a base clock of 3.8 GHz and a boost clock of 4.6 GHz.

It has 4 GB of L2 cache, and 16 GB of L3 cache; and 8-core integrated Radeon graphics clocked at 2.0 GHz.

This 65 watt desktop APU will have a launch price of US$359.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600G

The AMD Ryzen 5 5600G has an 6-core, 12-thread processor, with a base clock of 3.9 GHz and a boost clock of 4.4 GHz.

It has 3 GB of L2 cache, and 16 GB of L3 cache; and 7-core integrated Radeon graphics clocked at 1.9 GHz.

This 65 watt desktop APU will have a launch price of US$259.

AMD Ryzen PRO 5000 Series Desktop CPUs

While not mentioned in the main Computex 2021 press conference, AMD also launched the Ryzen PRO 5000 series desktop processors based on the Zen 3 core!

AMD Ryzen PRO 5000 G-Series (65W)

  • Ryzen 7 5750G : 8 core, 16 thread, 3.8 GHz to 4.6 GHz, 4 MB L2, 16 MB L3
  • Ryzen 5 5650G : 6 core, 12 thread, 3.9 GHz to 4.4 GHz, 3 MB L2, 16 MB L3
  • Ryzen 3 5350G : 4 core, 8 thread, 4.0 GHz to 4.2 GHz, 2 MB L2, 8 MB L3

AMD Ryzen PRO 5000 GE-Series (35W)

  • Ryzen 7 5750GE : 8 core, 16 thread, 3.2 GHz to 4.6 GHz, 4 MB L2, 16 MB L3
  • Ryzen 5 5650GE : 6 core, 12 thread, 3.4 GHz to 4.4 GHz, 3 MB L2, 16 MB L3
  • Ryzen 3 5350GE : 4 core, 8 thread, 3.6 GHz to 4.2 GHz, 2 MB L2, 8 MB L3

AMD Radeon RX 6000M Series Mobile Graphics

Scott Herkelman, Vice President & General Manager of AMD Graphics Business Unit, officially announced the introduction of the Radeon RX 6000M series mobile graphics for laptop gaming.

AMD Radeon RX 6800M

Their flagship model has a 2.3 GHz game clock and 12 GB of GDDR6 memory, and is designed to deliver 120 fps gaming at 1440p.

AMD says that it will offer significantly better performance than the competition :

  • 40% to 70% better gaming performance than the GeForce RTX 2070 at 1440p Max Settings.
  • 14% to 40% better gaming performance than the GeForce RTX 3080 while gaming on battery.

AMD Radeon RX 6700M

This model has a 2.3 GHz game clock and 10 GB of GDDR6 memory, and is designed to deliver 100 fps gaming at 1440p.

AMD Radeon RX 6600M

This model has a 2.177 GHz game clock and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory, and is designed to deliver 100 fps gaming at 1080p.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR)

FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR for short, is AMD’s spatial upscaling technology that is designed to boost frame rates, while delivering a high-quality gaming experience.

Think of it as AMD’s version of NVIDIA’s DLSS. But while DLSS is proprietary, FidelityFX Super Resolution is open-source, and will be supported on both AMD processors and GPUs as well as NVIDIA GPUs!

More than 10 game developers plan to integrate FSR into their top titles and gamer engines in 2021.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) will be available starting 22 June 2021.

AMD Advantage Gaming Laptops

Think of AMD Advantage as a marketing programme, based around a “design framework” of premium gaming features.

  • Amplified Performance : AMD Ryzen processor + AMD Radeon RX 6800M graphics + AMD Radeon Software for gaming at 100 fps at 1080p
  • Premium Displays : 144Hz+ with LFC, low latency, AMD FreeSync Premium, 300 nits+ brightness, IPS / OLED panels, 100% sRGB / 72% NTSC minimum
  • Built To Game : NVMe SSD, less than 40°C WASD keyboard temperatures when gaming, >10 hours binge watching on battery

AMD 3D Chiplet Technology

AMD continues to build on their packaging technologies with their new 3D Chiplet technology, developed in collaboration with TSMC.

It enhances their existing chipset architecture with 3D stacking using a hybrid bond approach that provides over 200X the interconnect density of 2D chipsets and more than 15X the density of existing 3D packaging solutions.

This new 3D chiplet technology also consumes less energy than current 3D solutions, and is the most flexible active-on-active silicon stacking technology.

In Computex 2021, Dr. Lisa Su showed off the 3D vertical SRAM cache bonded to an AMD Ryzen 5000 Series processor prototype.

AMD is on-track to begin production on high-end computing products with 3D chiplets by the end of 2021.

How To Create An 8TB SSD As Fast As DDR4 Memory!

The highlight of the WD Black NVMe SSD showcase at Computex 2018 was the massive 8TB SSD RAID array that is as fast as DDR4-2400 memory! Wonder how they accomplished this? Read on and find out!

This 8TB SSD Is As Fast As DDR4 Memory!

As you can see here, Western Digital hit a throughput of 19 GB/s with the Western Digital Black NVMe SSDs (Price Check)! That is as fast as single-channel DDR4-2400 memory!

 

How To Create This Super-Fast 8TB SSD

The secret? Andrew Vo explains how they created this super-fast 8TB SSD RAID array using the Western Digital Black NVMe SSDs (Price Check) in this video.

This is what you will need, if you plan to replicate their project :

Each WD Black NVMe SSD is capable of a peak transfer rate of 2.8 GB/s (write) to 3.4 GB/s (read), so eight of them would have a theoretical throughput limit of 22.4 to 27.2 GB/s!

To hit 19 GB/s, you need to create a RAID 0 array of those eight 1 TB WD Black NVMe SSDs (Price Check), but you can’t use the motherboard’s RAID feature because you would be limited by the 32 Gbps / 4 GB/s DMI bottleneck.

Intel VROC

The ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 Card (Price Check) supports Intel Virtual RAID on CPU (VROC), which reassigns unused PCIe lanes of an Intel Skylake or Coffee Lake processor to boost transfer rates up to 128 Gbps or 16 GB/s.

Of course, those are the theoretical limits, and the actual throughput will be considerably lower than 16 GB/s. To go beyond that, you will need two ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 Cards (Price Check).

AMD Ryzen Threadripper

However, Western Digital used an AMD Ryzen Threadripper system instead. The Threadripper processor has 64 PCIe lanes – plenty for two Hyper M.2 X16 Card (Price Check).

In the end, Western Digital only hit 19 GB/s with two of these cards. This is 30% lower than the theoretical capability of a perfect RAID 0 array of eight 1 TB WD Black NVMe SSDs (Price Check), and 40% lower than the theoretical capability of two ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 Cards (Price Check).

However, without resorting to this method, a motherboard-based RAID 0 array of eight 1 TB WD Black NVMe SSDs (Price Check) would only deliver a maximum transfer rate of just 4 GB/s. Even that’s in a perfect world.

 

How Much Does This Super-Fast SSD RAID Array Cost?

Each 1 TB WD Black NVMe SSDs (Price Check) currently costs $399.99. So the eight SSDs alone cost a princely US$ 3,192 / € 2,765 / RM 12,779.

The ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 Card (Price Check) is much cheaper at just $59 each. That’s an additional US$ 118 / € 102 / RM 472.

All in, this 8 TB SSD RAID array will set you back US$ 3,247 / € 2,812 / RM 12,999. And that does not include the AMD Ryzen Threadripper system=.

No doubt, this is a very expensive project. But think about it – you now have a massive 8 TB SSD RAID 0 array that is as fast as DDR4-2400 memory!

GIGABYTE X399 AORUS Xtreme Motherboard Preview

Hidden in the GIGABYTE and AORUS showcases was the yet-to-be-released X399 AORUS Xtreme motherboard. We were given a chance to take a close look at it, and take a video and some photos of it. If you are waiting for an AMD X399 Refresh motherboard to pair with the upcoming AMD Threadripper 2 CPU, here’s a teaser for you!

 

AMD X399 Refresh

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper is designed specifically to work with the AMD X399 chipset. Together, they offer the following features :

  • 64 PCI Express lanes
  • Quad-channel DDR4 SDRAM memory
  • Up to 2 native USB 3.1 Gen2 ports
  • Up to 14 USB 3.1 Gen1 ports
  • Up to 6 USB 2.0 ports
  • Up to 16 SATA ports

The upcoming AMD Threadripper 2 will continue to use the same chipset, with a BIOS update, of course. Other than that, the X399 Refresh motherboards are expected to feature the same circuitry and power optimisations being introduced with the X470 and B450 motherboards.

 

GIGABYTE X399 AORUS Xtreme Motherboard

The GIGABYTE X399 AOARUS Xtreme is an E-ATX (Extended ATX) motherboard with what appears to be 10+3 power phases. It has four PCI Express x16 slots (all reinforced with metal), and two M.2 SSD sockets – both with heatsinks.

In addition to built-in WiFi connectivity, it comes with two Gigabit LAN ports, and a 10 Gigabit LAN port. It also has eight USB 3.0 ports at the back, as well as two USB 3.1 ports – one Type A and one Type B.

This is a particularly heavy motherboard because of its large heatsinks, and large backplate. The GIGABYTE X399 AOARUS Xtreme will support the upcoming Threadripper 2 processors, and come with a removable BIOS chip.

AMD revealed a great many things at their Computex 2018 press conference, but the only announced product that will actually ship with immediate effect is the Radeon RX Vega 56 nano. Let’s hear from Scott Herkelman about this new graphics card, and check out the actual Vega 56 nano card, as well as its key specifications!

 

Scoot Herkelman On The Radeon RX Vega 56 nano

Here is the segment where Scott Herkelman reveals the Radeon RX Vega 56 nano graphics card, which was created and sold by PowerColor.

Basically, the PowerColor Radeon RX Vega 56 nano is a small version of the regular Radeon RX Vega 56, designed specifically for mini-ITX systems. Other than its much smaller size, it has 6-pin + 8-pin power connectors, instead of dual 8-pin power connectors.

Everything else, from its performance characteristics and power consumption appears to be the same as a regular Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics card.

Interestingly, AMD actually used one of them to power the large display for their presentation.

 

Radeon RX Vega 56 nano Price + Availability

The PowerColor Radeon RX Vega 56 nano is available from 6 June 2018 onwards, with a recommended retail price of US$ 449. This is a US$ 50 premium over the regular Radeon RX Vega 56.

PowerColour is also offering a bundle with the PowerColor Gaming Station, which they’re pricing at US$ 599. The PowerColor Gaming Station alone is priced at US$ 299, so that’s at US$ 149 discount for the bundle – a really good deal!

AMD 7nm EPYC Processor Update + First Look!

One of the biggest revelations at the AMD Computex 2018 press conference is how well along AMD is with their 7nm efforts. Everything appears to be chugging along as planned, and AMD shared not only details about their 7nm EPYC processor, they also showed off an engineering sample!

 

The 7nm EPYC Revealed!

At AMD Computex 2018, Dr. Lisa Su announced that AMD has decided to introduce 7nm Zen 2 processor, in the form of the 7nm EPYC processors!

Here are the key points in Dr. Lisa Su’s presentation :

  • AMD will go straight to 7nm Zen 2 cores for the next-generation EPYC processors.
  • 7nm Zen 2 silicon are in AMD labs, and “it’s looking good!
  • AMD will be sampling 7nm EPYC processors in the second half of 2018., with a launch in 2019.
  • 7nm EPYC processors will continue to use Socket SP3, and will be “drop-in” replacements for the first-generation EPYC processors.

 

First Look At 7nm EPYC + 7nm Vega!

In this video, Dr. Lisa Su shows off engineering samples of the 7nm EPYC processor (on the left), and the 7nm Vega GPU (on the right).

 

First Examples Of 7nm EPYC Servers

AMD also showed examples of a single CPU server, and a dual CPU server, with 7nm EPYC processors.

As AMD hasn’t actually produced any 7nm EPYC thus far (sampling only starts in the second half of 2018), these are just dummy CPU mockups. The real purpose is to demonstrate that they will be pin-compatible drop-in replacements for existing EPYC servers… with a BIOS update, of course!

At the end of the AMD Computex 2018 press conference, we had the opportunity to get a close-up look at the lidded and delidded AMD Threadripper 2 processors!

 

AMD Threadripper 2 – Everything You Need To Know!

Now that we got the videos out of the way, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty details.

What’s The Official Name?

We all call it Threadripper 2, but the official names are a mouthful :

  • 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper, or
  • AMD Ryzen Threadripper Gen. 2

Fortunately, unlike Ryzen 2, calling it by the shorter, and punchier, name of Threadripper 2 won’t confuse people.

Power + Performance

As Jim pointed out, the Threadripper 2 will have up to 32-cores. When James showcased its performance though, he only used a 24-core Threadripper 2. Imagine how much faster the 32-core version is against the 18-core Intel Core i9-7980XE, or the just-announced 28-core Intel CPU.

Neither one of them talked about the power consumption, but we have it on good authority that the 32-core Threadripper 2 will have a 250 W TDP. This is 70 W (39%) higher than the 16-core Threadripper’s 180 W TDP.

Availability

As Jim mentioned at the AMD Computex 2018 press conference, the Threadripper 2 is on track for a Q3 2018 launch.

AMD Zen+ Microarchitecture

The AMD Threadripper 2 processors are based on the improved AMD Zen+ microarchitecture, which delivers slightly better performance, with lower cache and memory latencies :

  • 3% more 1T IPC (instructions per second)
  • 13% lower L1 cache latency
  • 34% lower L2 cache latency
  • 16% lower L3 cache latency
  • 11% lower memory latency
  • Official support for JEDEC DDR4-2933

12LP Process Technology

The AMD Threadripper 2 processors will be fabricated using the 12LP (12 nm Leading Performance) process technology from GlobalFoundries. This is the same process technology used in the 2nd Gen Ryzen processor.

12LP is really a 14 nm process, with improvements and a tighter pitch, so the die size and transistor count remain the same. However, the improved process allows for these improvements :

  • top clock speed increased by 250 MHz
  • “all core” now overclock around 4.2 GHz
  • CPU voltage is reduced by about 50 mV at all clock speeds
  • up to 11% lower power consumption, compared to 14 nm
  • up to 16% better performance per watt, compared to 14 nm

Precision Boost 2

Precision Boost 2 is one of the biggest improvements in AMD SenseMI. It replaces the old 2-core boost model, with a linear boost model. This allows for much greater performance for games and applications that use more than 2 cores.

Precision Boost Overdrive

James Prior revealed that AMD will introduce a feature called Precision Boost Overdrive in the future. The motherboard will be able to communicate its actual capabilities to the processor, allowing for better boost profiles and a relaxed vcore limiter with better motherboards.

Extended Frequency Range 2 (XFR 2)

XFR 2 will boosts its performance by 4-7%, depending on the performance of the installed CPU cooler.

AMD X399 Chipset

The AMD Threadripper 2 processors will run on the existing AMD X399 motherboards, with a BIOS update. However, motherboard vendors have new AMD X399 Refresh motherboards that will offer higher overclockability, and possibly the AMD StoreMI Technology as a value-added bonus.

AMD StoreMI is basically an OEM version of the Enmotus FuzeDrive Basic software, which allows you to combine all of your storage drives into a single virtual storage drive. It can even add up to 2 GB of DDR4 memory as a very fast cache to the combined drive.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — June 6, 2018 — AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) today demonstrated its next generation of CPU and GPU product leadership during a live-streamed press conference at COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2018. AMD provided a first look at the performance of upcoming 7nm AMD Radeon Vega GPU products slated for launch in 2018, 12nm 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors with up to 32 cores slated for launch in Q3 2018, and unprecedented customer adoption of Ryzen and Radeon products in premium OEM devices. AMD also announced four EPYC processor milestones: immediate availability of EPYC processors through Tencent Cloud Services, a new HPE single-socket system, details of its first Cisco UCS server platform, and that the next generation 7nm EPYC processor, codenamed “Rome”, will begin sampling in 2H 2018.

“At Computex 2018 we demonstrated how the strongest CPU and GPU product portfolio in the industry gets even stronger in the coming months,” said AMD President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. “Our upcoming 7nm and 12nm products build on the momentum of our Ryzen, Radeon and EPYC processors, positioning AMD to lead the next generation of high-performance computing in markets from premium devices and gaming to machine learning and the datacenter.”

 

AMD Computex 2018 Client Compute Update

  • AMD delivered the first public demonstration of 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors—the second AMD 12nm product family—featuring up to 32 cores and 64 threads. 2nd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processors are scheduled to launch in Q3 2018 with outstanding performance expected in rendering, post production, and encoding workloads.
  • AMD showcased its broadest portfolio of premium notebook and desktop systems from global OEM partners powered by Ryzen APUs, 2nd Gen Ryzen desktop processors, and Radeon graphics. Newly introduced systems from partners include:[adrotate group=”2″]
  • Acer Predator Helios 500 notebook, Predator Orion 5000 desktop and Nitro 50 gaming desktop
  • ASUS VivoBook X505ZA and X570ZD notebooks
  • Dell’s latest Inspiron series including Inspiron 13” 7000 2-in-1, Inspiron 15” 5000 notebooks and Inspiron 7000 gaming desktop
  • HP Envy x360 13” and Envy x360 15” notebooks
  • Huawei MateBook D 14” notebook

  • AMD also continued to expand and improve upon the AM4 desktop ecosystem for Ryzen desktop processors with the announcement of AMD B450 chipset-based motherboards. Optimized for 2nd generation Ryzen desktop processors, B450 chipsets, designed to offer a superb balance of features, performance, and value, will be available from partners including ASRock, ASUS, Biostar, Gigabyte, and MSI.

 

AMD Computex 2018 Graphics and Gaming Update

  • AMD showcased the first public demonstration of its Radeon Vega GPU based on 7nm process technology built specifically for professional/datacenter applications.
  • AMD announced that 7nm Radeon “Vega” architecture-based Radeon Instinct has started sampling to initial customers and will launch in both server and workstation form factors for key compute use cases in 2H 2018.
  • AMD also revealed:
  • Radeon™ RX Vega56 “nano” graphics card from PowerColor that enables small form factor enthusiast gaming performance,
  • the latest Radeon FreeSync™ technology adoption with Samsung’s 80” QLED TV for tear free and smooth gameplay directly from a Radeon RX graphics card equipped PC or with an Microsoft Xbox One S or Xbox One X console,
  • Freesync support with HDR now available in Ubisoft’s recently launched and popular AAA game Far Cry 5.

 

AMD Computex 2018 Server Update

AMD announced growth in its EPYC processor engagements including:

  • The company’s first ever Cisco UCS server engagement in Cisco’s highest density offering ever with 128% more cores, 50% more servers, and 20% more storage per rack.
  • The all new HPE ProLiant DL325 Gen10 one socket server for virtualization and software-defined storage applications with up to 27% lower cost per virtual machine than the leading two-socket competitor.
  • Immediate availability of the EPYC based SA1 Tencent Cloud Service
  • The next generation 7nm EPYC processor, codenamed “Rome” and featuring Zen2 architecture, is now running in AMD labs and will begin sampling to customers in the second half of this year, ahead of launch in 2019.

With Intel’s 50th anniversary next month, it’s a perfect time to celebrate one of the most important technologies of Intel’s legacy: the PC. As we transition to the data-centric era, the PC remains a critical facet of Intel’s business, and it’s an area where we believe there are still so many opportunities ahead.

Today, at Computex in Taipei, I shared our vision for the future of the PC and introduced a wide range of new technologies that will help us and the broader ecosystem make this future a reality. One that transforms the PC from a simple computer into a platform that can power every person’s greatest contribution.

Most of us are already choosing the PC as the place to go to focus. In fact, when people really need to get things done, over 80 percent turn to their PC. At the same time, we are more distracted than ever. Data shows that on average people are interrupted every three minutes. The nature of where, how and why we work is also changing. And the way people connect with one another has changed, with technology being a key driving force.

Against this backdrop, there is an opportunity to fundamentally improve the PC experience to meet today’s needs and help people focus on what is most important to them. To help them create and build a sense of community. But to make this leap, we need to innovate the PC around five key vectors: performance, connectivity, battery life, adaptability and intelligence.

Ultimate Performance

Our unwavering commitment to delivering the best performance continued as we announced the latest additions to our mobile lineup of the 8th Gen Intel Core processor family: the Whiskey Lake U-series and Amber Lake Y-series, featuring up to double-digit performance gains and integrated gigabit Wi-Fi. Expect more than 140 new laptops and 2 in 1s from OEMs starting this fall. And for desktop, by the end of this year, we’re delivering a new X-series release and the next Intel Core S-series processor.

Beyond processing power, we also see the opportunity for even more PC acceleration with the introduction of the Intel Optane SSD 905P, now available in an M.2 form factor. Delivering industry-leading endurance, this new, slim Intel Optane SSD is a high-performance drive that allows the processor to spend less time waiting and more time computing, enabling users to enjoy an amazing computing experience.

As we celebrate Intel’s 50th anniversary, we also recognize the 40th anniversary of Intel’s x86 architecture. In honor of that, we revealed the limited edition 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8086K processor, the first Intel processor with a 5.0 GHz turbo frequency. In celebration of this milestone, and our enthusiasts, we’re giving away 8,086 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8086K processors.

Connectivity

At Mobile World Congress, we talked about our leadership and the importance of 5G. Sprint is now joining us as a partner to sell Intel processor based, 5G-connected PCs in stores around the world. Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Microsoft are working with us to deliver the industry’s first 5G-connected laptops and 2 in 1s in 2019.

As we pave the way for 5G, expect us to deliver 10 more 4G-connected PCs from partners like Acer, Asus, Dell and HP – on top of the 25 currently in market. These always-connected PCs are not only sleek and beautiful, but packed with performance.

All-Day Battery Life

The display consumes the most battery in a device, and one way we’re working to enable all-day battery life is by co-engineering the new Intel Low Power Display Technology, featured in a one watt panel manufactured by Sharp and Innolux, which can cut LCD power consumption by half. Through continued innovation with the industry, we expect to deliver an additional four to eight hours of local video playback – that means battery life could be up to 28 hours on some devices.

Adaptability

People are looking for PCs that adapt to their lifestyle and location. This can take shape in new form factors like dual screen, along with designing platforms for specific usage scenarios. We showed several examples on stage today, including a preview of an innovative Yoga Book with uncompromised performance coming from Lenovo later this year.

The NVIDIA Jetson Xavier Up Close!

The NVIDIA Jetson Xavier is a new deep learning computer designed for intelligent machines, e.g. robots. It delivers 30 teraflops of performance in a small form factor. The developer’s kit will see an early release in August 2018, with a price of US$ 1,299.

 

The NVIDIA Drive Xavier + Drive Pegasus Up Close!

Both NVIDIA Drive Xavier and NVIDIA Drive Pegasus use the new NVIDIA Xavier SoC – the world’s largest System-On-Chip, with 9 billion transistors!

The Drive Xavier uses a single Xavier SoC, with 30 teraflops of computing performance. The Drive Pegasus, on the other hand, has two Xavier SoCs and two Tesla V100 GPUs, with a total computing performance of 280 teraflops!

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper Processor

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper will have up to 16 cores, processing up to 32 simultaneous threads. It will use the new Socket TR4, have quad-channel DDR4 memory support and feature 64 PCI Express lanes. If you were impressed by the 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 processors (read our AMD Ryzen 7 1800X review), just imagine how powerful the 16-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor will be.

In this video, Jim Anderson, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the AMD Compute and Graphics business group, reveals the key features of the Threadripper CPU  and Socket TR4 platform.

Then, AMD President & CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, showed us a demo of Prey running on 4K (on Ultra High settings) using the AMD Ryzen Threadripper, with dual AMD Radeon RX Vega graphics cards. However, she did not reveal the average frame rate of this setup.

In this new video, Dr. Lisa Su and John Taylor (Corporate Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, AMD), reveal the specifications of the two first AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors (as well as the first two Ryzen 3 processors). It also shows both Ryzen Threadripper CPUs delivering higher performance in Cinebench R15 than Intel Core i9-7900X X-Series processor.

Targeted at the high-end desktop (HEDT) market, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper is paired with the X399 chipset and the new Socket TR4, offering quad memory channels and support up to 2TB of DDR4 memory, as well as 64 PCI Express 3.0 lanes!

ASRock, ASUS, GIGABYTE and MSI already have motherboards built around the AMD X399 chipset. Everything is set for the Threadripper’s epic battle against the newly-announced Intel X-Series processors!

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper Delidded

German overclocked der8auer delidded a Threadripper processor with AMD’s permission recently, revealing many interesting facts.

  • It has four Zeppelin dies with 32 cores, but only two dies (16 cores) are functional.
  • It is functionally the AMD EPYC server processor with half the dies disabled.
  • The dies are soldered to a gold-plated heat spreader using indium solder.

  • Although rumoured to be branded as the AMD Ryzen 9 processor (to directly compete against the newly-announced Intel Core i9 processors), AMD will be using the Ryzen Threadripper name instead. We can’t blame them – Threadripper is certainly a better and more memorable name than Ryzen 9![adrotate banner=”4″] -> Correct! AMD has announced that it will be called AMD Ryzen Threadripper!
  • AMD will launch two Threadripper processors on 27 July 2017. -> Correct!

  • There will also be a 12-core processor, capable of handling 24 simultaneous threads. -> Correct! It is the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X!

And here are 1440p gaming performance results on the two AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors, using the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

Here is a quick comparison of the results, using the Threadripper 1920X (Lowest Price) as the baseline (100%)  :

The Threadripper Game Mode

Games are mostly optimised for quad-core processors… and rarely make use of octa-core processors. In fact, having even more cores can result in poorer performance due to poor thread scheduling. In some cases, the game may not even run at all.

To avoid those problems, AMD developer the Threadripper Game Mode. You can switch from the default “Creator Mode” to the “Game Mode” in the AMD Ryzen Master utility. Switching to Game Mode changes the Threadripper processor in two ways :

  • It temporarily disables half the CPU cores, turning the Threadripper 1950X (Lowest Price) into an 8C 16T processor like the AMD Ryzen 1800X, and the Threadripper 1920X (Lowest Price) into an 6C 12T processor like the AMD Ryzen 1600X.
  • It tells the operating system to use a Local Mode (NUMA) memory, which keeps the game and its memory footprint inside one CPU die and the locally-connected DRAM memory. This minimises several key latency points in the system, which will improve gaming performance.

Once you are done playing your game, you can switch back to Creator Mode to make full use of all of the Threadripper’s cores.

Let’s take a look at the performance difference between the Creator Mode and the Game Mode.

As you can see, the Game Mode improves the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X’s gaming performance by 10% to 38%. It’s likely that disabling half the cores also allow the Threadripper to clock them higher, as there is now a much higher thermal headroom.

Jensen Huang Reveals NVIDIA Isaac, Max-Q, Volta, HGX & More!

The first major event at Computex Taipei 2017 was the Powering The AI Revolution keynote by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. Although the keynote was heavy on artificial intelligence technologies like NVIDIA Isaac and NVIDIA Volta, Jensen also announced other technologies like GeForce GTX with Max-Q Design.

In this 90 minute long keynote, Jensen reveals the future of artificial intelligence and robotics. In that vision, the GPU is taking over from the CPU in delivering the petaflops of computing power required to deliver artificial intelligence.

 

He also reveals the new NVIDIA technologies that will power the next-generation AI applications – the new NVIDIA Tesla V100, which is the largest GPU ever made, and the NVIDIA HGX server that hosts eight of these GPUs to deliver almost 1 petaflops of compute performance in a single chassis!

Jensen also shows how the NVIDIA Isaac Initiative allows robots to self-learn in a virtual environment, using nothing more than the NVIDIA Jetson 2 module. Watch how AI on the edge delivers smarter intelligence with minimal work.

The Western Digital & SanDisk Showcase

For the first time, Western Digital has a presence in Computex. Well, they basically joined SanDisk (their subsidiary) at their regular showcase in the Grand Hyatt Taipei.

Oh my! Managed to catch up with Mimi, Jolin and Jared of Western Digital!

What we are holding are the new WD Blue and SanDisk Ultra SSDs built using the 64-layer 3D NAND flash memory.

That’s 2 TB of flash storage with a 500 TB write endurance in our hands!

 

The Acer Computex 2017 Showcase

From my visit to the Acer booth – the Acer Predator Groton 700. It boasts the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX with Max-Q design.

We made sure to drop by the ASUS booth again to check out the new ROG Strix GL702ZC. What’s so special? It boasts an 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 1700 processor!

Trade Show Girls

Computex is nowhere as large as CES, but it is still the largest tech trade show in Asia. It boasts hundreds of exhibitors spread over 6 massive halls and private suites in the Grand Hyatt Taipei, Taipei 101 and elsewhere.

Every Computex, exhibitors have to come up with ways to attract potential customers and the press to navigate through the oft-confusing maze of competitors to visit their booths. Some offer goodie bags and free food and drinks, while others rely on pretty models. A select few will splurge on showgirls who bring in the crowd with dance and freebies.

Computer component manufacturers are more likely to use pretty models and showgirls, because frankly, they have it harder than most. Unlike smartphones and tablets that are easily understood by consumers, computer components are not sexy or even easily understood.

These models and showgirls are highly effective in drawing eyeballs. But whether those eyeballs translate into actual sales and press coverage is up to debate.
