On top of that, it boasts new features like Simultaneous Multi-Projection, and VR optimisations like Lens Matched Shading and Single Pass Stereo.
That’s why gamers who want to play on-the-go are eagerly waiting for NVIDIA to introduce the next-generation GeForce mobile GPUs based on the Pascal architecture. They will not only be faster, but also offer reduced power consumption. All that translates into a better and longer gaming experience.

There Is No Mobile Pascal!
Believe it or not, NVIDIA will NOT be releasing any mobile Pascal GPU. Yes, you read that correctly. There will be NO MOBILE GPU based on the new NVIDIA Pascal microarchitecture.

Instead, NVIDIA will start using the DESKTOP GPUs based on the NVIDIA Pascal microarchitecture in laptops! Yes, they will have lower clock speeds, but they will be the same GPUs used in desktop graphics cards.
This is possible because the new Pascal GPUs are 3X more power-efficient than the previous-generation Maxwell GPUs. So it makes perfect sense to just use the desktop-grade GPUs. It is not only good for marketing purposes, it also allows NVIDIA to leverage more on the economies of scale.
But for brevity, we will continue to use the term “Pascal mobile GPU” to refer to Pascal GPUs used in mobile devices.
Series Name Updated!
The M moniker is dead. The new Pascal mobile GPUs will NOT be called the GeForce GTX 1080M or GeForce GTX 1070M.
Today, NVIDIA will announce three Pascal mobile GPUs – the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. Yes, exactly the same names as their desktop counterparts.

Yes, NVIDIA apparently brought up the launch date 3 days earlier to August 16, 2016. Today, MSI and other brands like GIGABYTE, ASUS, etc. will reveal gaming laptops powered by the NVIDIA Pascal mobile GPUs.
So, all of you can stop hounding the notebook brand reps or your favourite NVIDIA rep about when the Pascal mobile GPUs are coming. 😀
Price Performance Advantage
Although our sources, who shall remain unnamed, refused to divulge exact benchmark results, we were told that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 is about 50% faster than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M, and about 30% faster than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 used in certain gaming laptops.
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 is said to add about US$50 to the cost of the laptop paid by the customer. That is cheap if the huge performance advantage pans out.

On the third day of Computex 2016, we spent half a day at GIGABYTE’s 36th floor VIP Showroom in Taipei 101. One of the attractions that took up our time was the GIGABYTE Case Mod Showcase that occupied the center of their VIP Showroom.
The GIGABYTE case mod showcase featured incredible case mods by top case modders from around the world, including Maciel Barreto from Brazil and Suchao Prowphong from Thailand.
We also took four videos of these incredible case mods to share with you. We hope they will inspire you to create such creative case mods too!
This case mod was built by Benny Shieh and Janus Yeh from GIGABYTE using a retail LEGO Ghostbuster Firehouse set. To demonstrate their creativity, the GIGABYTE modders mounted the motherboard and other components solely using LEGO bricks! They then retrofitted the flood lamps and factory lights inside and outside the Firehall with LEDs, and even coated some to give them a yellow tint.

Gatling Gun Case Mod by Suchao Prowphong
This Gatling gun case mod was built by Suchao Prowphong from Thailand. A world-renown case modder, he has hand-crafted more than 17 of such case mods. This one features a revolving Gatling gun design built around the GIGABYTE GA-X170 EXTREME ECC motherboard with water cooling for both CPU and graphics card!

AORUS RGB Fusion Keyboard
After AORUS introduced their individual key backlit keyboard at CES 2016 earlier this year, they received a lot of requests to add RGB colour functionality to that keyboard. During Computex 2016, they introduced the AORUS RGB Fusion Keyboard with individual RGB backlit keys!
The new RGB Fusion Keyboard features per-key backlighting, with up to 16.8 million colour variations. Because there is a dedicated LED behind each key, you can customise the keyboard to light up only certain keys. You can also create animated illumination patterns, like breathing, waves or ripple effects.
The new RGB Fusion Keyboard will be introduced in the next-generation of AORUS X5 and X7 gaming laptops.

AORUS X7 DT Gaming Laptop
AORUS won the 2016 Computex Design and Innovation Award for the new AORUS X7 DT gaming laptop. The AORUS X7 DT is powered by an overclocked 6th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, and a desktop-class GPU – the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980. Yet it is just an inch thick and weighs only 3.2 kg.
The AORUS X7 DT also claims to be the thinnest and lightest VR-Ready gaming laptop. In fact, it is the only laptop to win the “Gaming & Virtual Reality” category of the 2016 CES Innovation Awards.
2016 Limited Edition MultiCam Design
The 2016 Limited Edition MultiCam design is an AORUS trademark style, offering a military-style look that is subtle enough to look sophisticated. This year, they will make the Limited Edition MultiCam Design available worldwide on the AORUS X3, X5 and X7 models.

On the second day of Computex 2016, AMD publicly revealed the first processor to use their new x86 Zen processor core architecture. Codenamed “Summit Ridge“, the desktop processor will come with eight AMD Zen processor cores that are capable of processing sixteen threads simultaneously.
The AMD Zen core architecture has been along awaited, because it is the first fresh design that was not derived from AMD’s existing Bulldozer architecture. Built around the SMT (simultaneous multithreading) microarchitecture, AMD Zen will offer much better core performance at the cost of a larger die. It will also feature a new 14 nm FinFET process technology and use the new AM4 socket.
AMD “Summit Ridge” Desktop Processor Revealed
We were present at the Westin Taipei, when Dr. Lisa Su, President and Chief Executive Officer, AMD, officially announced the AMD “Summit Ridge” desktop processor, before publicly revealing an example. Check it out!
Dr. Lisa did not reveal many details of the new AMD Summit Ridge processor though. Here are the key takeaways from her speech :
The new AMD Zen core will deliver 40% more instructions per cycle than the previous-generation Excavator core.
The AMD “Summit Ridge” desktop processor will have 8 core that can process 16 threads simultaneously.
The AMD “Summit Ridge” desktop processor will be built on the new FinFET process technology, and use the new AMD AM4 socket.
The AMD Zen core is designed across multiple segments including high-performance desktops, servers, notebooks and embedded solutions.
Although not mentioned, the AMD “Summit Ridge” processor will only support DDR4 memory.

On the second day of Computex 2016, AMD unveiled the AMD Radeon RX 480, the first salvo of their “Water Drop” strategy for the upcoming AMD Polaris architecture. Their “Water Drop” strategy is focused at releasing new graphics architectures in high volume segments first to maintain market share growth for Radeon GPUs.
Set for launch and availability on June 29, 2016, the new AMD Radeon RX 480 will deliver more than 5 TFLOPS of performance at just US$199! The Radeon RX 480 is both HTC Vive-Ready and Oculus Rift compatible. AMD expects the Radeon RX 480 to jumpstart the growth of VR adoption by offering premium VR experience at less than half the current cost.

“VR is the most eagerly anticipated development in immersive computing ever, and is the realization of AMD’s Cinema 2.0 vision that predicted the convergence of immersive experiences and interactivity back in 2008,” said Raja Koduri, senior vice president and chief architect, Radeon Technologies Group, AMD. “As we look to fully connect and immerse humanity through VR, cost remains the daylight between VR being only for the select few, and universal access for everyone. The Radeon RX Series is a disruptive technology that adds rocket fuel to the VR inflection point, turning it into a technology with transformational relevance to consumers.”
Odd Radeon RX 480 Results
In the final minutes of his presentation, Raja Koduri showed how two Radeon RX 480 graphics cards can beat the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card for far less money. Based on the sub-$500 price, the results are based on the 8 GB variant of the Radeon RX 480.
What’s really odd is that Raja Koduri explicitly pointed out that the two Radeon RX 480 graphics cards were only utilised to 51% to slightly best the GeForce GTX 1080. Those are frankly, really odd numbers.
If it’s true that the two Radeon RX 480 graphics cards have a 49% headroom after beating the GeForce GTX 1080, then a single Radeon RX 480 would actually beat the GeForce GTX 1080! In fact, if we extrapolate the results so that both cards have the same 98.7% GPU utilisation, the Radeon RX 480 would deliver a frame rate of 60.5 fps. That would make the Radeon RX 480 about 3% faster than the GeForce GTX 1080, which we know is just not possible…

Juicy Radeon RX Series Tidbits
We left right after the announcement, and missed the Q&A, but we managed to glean some additional tidbits after that :
The AMD Radeon RX 480 will come in two variants – one with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory, and one with 8 GB of GDDR5 memory.
The Radeon RX 480 with 4 GB of GDDR5 will sell for US$199, while the 8 GB variant will sell for US$229.
AMD will also announce the Radeon RX 470 and Radeon RX 460 graphics cards, based on the same AMD Polaris architecture and 14 nm FinFET fabrication process.
The AMD Radeon RX 470 (codenamed Polaris 10 Pro, formerly Ellesmere Pro) could have a TDP of 120 W.
More details on the Radeon RX 470 and Radeon RX 460 should be revealed during the official June 29 launch.

After Dell launched the world’s largest 2-in-1 laptop, the Dell Inspiron 17 7000, we had the opportunity to check out some of their latest Alienware products. Some of them, we have seen earlier. Some of them are brand new. We didn’t have much time, but we recorded three videos for you to check out.
Alienware 13 OLED
The Alienware 13 OLED is the world’s first gaming notebook to feature an OLED display panel. This not only gives you a much higher contrast ratio of 100,000:1, it also gives you a wider colour gamut – 104% of sRGB. But gamers will probably be more interested in its much faster response time of just 1-2 ms.
Despite its petite size, the Alienware 13 OLED is powered by the 6th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M graphics processor. The OLED display has a resolution of 2560 x 1440, lower than the non-OLED resolution of 3200 x 1800 in the previous Alienware 13.

This is the third revision of the Alienware X51. Reengineered with the 6th Generation Intel Core processors and a new selection of AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards, the Alienware X51 R3 comes with a liquid cooling option, and Oculus Rift-ready configurations.

No. 1 : Intel’s Evolution Is Underway
Last month, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich radically changed the direction for the entire company, based on five core beliefs :
The cloud is the most important trend shaping the future of the smart, connected world – and thus Intel’s future.
The many “things” that make up the PC Client business and the Internet of Things are made much more valuable by their connection to the cloud.
Memory and programmable solutions such as FPGAs will deliver entirely new classes of products for the data center and the Internet of Things.
5G will become the key technology for access to the cloud and as we move toward an always-connected world.
Moore’s Law will continue to progress and Intel will continue to lead in delivering its true economic impact.
That change is underway, with Navin Shenoy describing how Intel will change the way we view computing. He not only emphasised the future of connected homes, smart vehicles and drones, but also unveiled new products to deliver new capabilities in those spaces.
No. 2 : Visual cloud, machine learning unlock human potential
Video streaming is now taking up almost 80% of all Internet traffic, so delivering that content via the cloud is top priority for many service providers. To help them accelerate video encoding for secure streaming, Intel announced the Intel Xeon E3-1500 v5 family of processors. This allows service to pack more video streams into a single server or appliance for a minimized data center footprint and reduced power consumption.
Intel demonstrated that capability by live-streaming a 360-degree virtual reality jazz concert delivered from the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in New York using hardware-assisted 4K video delivery on Intel Xeon E3-1500 v5 servers.
No. 3 : Continuing to push the boundaries of PC innovation
Intel will continue to work on newer and faster processors. To demonstrate that commitment, Intel announced the availability of the new Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition processor. This is the first 10-core desktop processor that can handle up to 20 threads simultaneously.
Intel also confirmed that the 7th Generation Intel Core processors (codenamed Kaby Lake) as well as the low-cost Intel Pentium, Celeron and Atom processors (codenamed Apollo Lake) are on schedule for release later in Q3, 2016.
No. 4 : “Things” are getting smarter and more connected
Intel is betting on connected homes, vehicles and the Internet of Things. They demonstrated that by announcing the Intel AnyWAN GRX 750 system-on-a-chip (SoC) family and the Intel XWAY WAV500 Wi-Fi chipset – Intel’s new 5th Generation 11ac MU-MIMO Wi-Fi family of products for home gateways.
The Intel Atom x3 (formerly known as SoFIA) lives on though. Intel will continue to expand Intel Atom x3 processor-based solutions for products like point-of-sale systems, healthcare tablets and industrial devices within the IoT.
No. 5 : 5G will transform mobility
5G is not just about faster mobile Internet. It is about more powerful wireless networks that connect “things” to each other, to people and to the cloud. To that end, Intel announced an agreement with Foxconn to collaborate on the development of 5G network infrastructure technologies like Mobile Edge Computing, Cloud Radio Access Network (CloudRAN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV).

Intel may have abandoned the smartphone market, but ASUS soldiers on with their ZenFone brand of smartphones. Instead of Intel Atom processors, they are now powered by Qualcomm processors. But that’s not all that’s changed. The new ASUS ZenFone 3 family of smartphone now comes in 3 distinct models, and they all look markedly different.
This is a departure from the ASUS ZenFone 2 family, which featured a common ambidextrous design even when ASUS differentiated them into a multitude of different models. The new ASUS ZenFone 3, the phablet edition called ASUS ZenFone 3 Ultra, and the premium ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe all have very different designs, even when they share similar hardware features.

It has a 5.5″ full HD Super IPS display, and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on both front and back.
Like the other ZenFone 3 models, it has an 8 MP front camera with f/2.0 lens. It also comes with the same 6P f/2.0 lens and second-generation laser auto-focusing system for the rear camera. However, it only comes with a 16 MP sensor.

June 1 Schedule
On the second day of Computex 2016, we are tentatively scheduled to attend the following major events :
Computex begins at 9:30 AM, and our first task is to get our press passes at the Media Centre. Off we go! 😀
We have arrived at the Nangang Exhibition Center! First stop – the Media Center to get our media passes.
