Truth : There Was No Gopeng-Tapah Landslide!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp, and social media platforms, and here are the reasons why!

Fact #1 : Incident Occurred In India

The tragic incident happened at around 5:11 PM on Tuesday, 4 July 2023. However, it did not occur on the Gopeng-Tapah road, in Perak, Malaysia.

This video actually shows a landslide that crushed cars that were queuing up on. the Kohima-Dimapur National Highway in Nagaland, India.

Three cars were crushed, killing two people dead, while three people were seriously injured.

The incident was confirmed by the Nagaland Director General of Police Rupin Sharma, who posted the same video that day, with this warning:

Today 04/07/2023

Massive #Rockslide and #Landslide on #Kohima_Dimapur main highway.

Pls stay away till road is cleared and traffic resumes.

Fact #3 : Perak Police Chief Refuted Viral Claims

On Friday, July 7, 2023, Perak Police Chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri refuted the viral claims that the video showed a landslide crushing cars on the Gopeng-Tapah road. He said that a check by the police confirmed that the incident happened overseas.

The incident did not happen in Perak but overseas.

Did African Migrants Just Destroy Historic Alcazar Library?!

Did African migrants just riot and destroy the historical Alcazar Library in Marseille, France?!

Take a look at the viral video, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : African Migrants Just Destroyed Alcazar Library!

People are sharing a video of the historical Alcazar Library burning, after being allegedly destroyed by African migrants who were rioting in France.

Stew Peters : The Alcazar Library in Marseille is the largest library in France, containing an archive of one million historically significant documents.

African migrants just TORCHED it.

The Alcazar library in Marseille included an archive of one million historically significant archives.

VVC Watch : The Alcazar Library in Marseille is the largest in France, containing an archive of one million historically significant documents. African migrants just TORCHED it. #vvcwatch

Some also claim that the video shows the National Library in Paris on fire, not the Alcazar library.

Recommended : Is This The Last Video Of Titan Sub At Titanic Wreck?!

Truth : African Migrants Did Not Destroy Alcazar Library!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp, and social media platforms like Twitter, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : People Were Rioting Over Nahel Merzouk

First, I should quickly point out that the June 2023 riots in France had nothing to do with migrants in France, whether they are African or otherwise.

People in France were not rioting over migrant rights, but rather, the death of Nahel Merzouk – a 17 year-old French youth of Moroccan and Algerian descent, who was shot and killed by the police in Nanterre on 27 June 2023.

That morning, two Paris Police Prefecture motorcycle police officers saw Nahel Merzouk driving a Mercedes-Benz A Class AMG with a Polish licence plate at high speed in a bus lane.

They tried to flag it down, but Nahel continued to flee, committing several traffic offences in the process. But he was eventually forced to stop due to traffic congestion.

That was when the two police officers got off their motorcycles and ordered him to turn off the engine. When Nahel started to pull away again, one of the police officers fire a shot at him because he claim Nahel was about to run him over. The car continued for a distance before crashing into street furniture.

However, a 50-second video was later released, showing that neither police officers were in danger of being run over by Nahel. A passenger in Nahel’s vehicle also testified that the police officer hit Merzouk with the butt of his gun several times, and the third buttstroke made Nahel release the brake pedal, causing the car to move forward as it was an automatic car.

Those revelations caused a great public outcry and outrage, that quickly turned into protests and riots in many parts of France.

Fact #2 : Rioters Attempted To Set Alcazar Library On Fire

On the night of Thursday, June 29, 2023, rioters attempted to set the Alcazar library in Marseille on fire. They broke some of its windows, and tried to set its entrance on fire.

However, the rioters did not succeed in entering the Alcazar library, or set it on fire. Its entrance was only lightly torched. It was boarded up the next day.

There is also no evidence that the rioters who tried to set the Alcazar library on fire were migrants, or Africans.

Recommended : Is This President Macron Dancing With His Wife 30 Years Ago?!

Fact #3 : Viral Video Is Of Manila Central Post Office Fire

The video that went viral on social media does not show the Alcazar Library on fire. Rather, the video showed the Manila Central Post Office (MCPO) which caught fire on Sunday, May 21, 2023.

The fire started in its basement at 11:41 PM that night, but firefighters had trouble controlling it. It was finally controlled at 7:22 AM on May 22, and finally put out at 6:33 AM the next day, on May 23, 2023.

18 persons were wounded in the incident – 16 firefighters, a fire volunteer, and a civilian. 300 million pesos worth of assets, including national identification cards were destroyed or damaged.

Even worse was the loss of the heritage building. The Manila Central Post Office was a 97 year-old building which was a “classic example of Western architecture that existed between two world wars“.

Fact #4 : French National Library Not On Fire Either

Claims that the video shows the French National Library in Paris on fire are also false.

Elodie Vincent, a spokesperson for Bibliothèque nationale de France, confirmed in an email that the French National Library was unharmed during the Nahel protests and riots.

I should also point out that the French National Library is the largest library in France, not the Alcazar Library.

Does Your Car Have Cancer-Causing Benzene?!

Do you have to drive with the windows down, because your car is full of cancer-causing benzene?!

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : Your Car Is Killing You With Cancer-Causing Benzene!

This message keep going viral on WhatsApp, and social media platforms, claiming that our cars are full of cancer-causing benzene! It’s really long, so feel free to skip to the next section for the facts!

😳🔴C A U T I O N🔴😳

🚙 🚘 🚗 🚖 🚕
🔈 This msg from Dr Syed Badar Husain, renowned neurologist in Atlanta:

Plz circulate🔜

Recommended : Why You Should NEVER Wear Gloves At Gas / Petrol Station!

Truth : Your Car Is Not Killing You With Benzene!

This appears to be yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp, and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, and here are the reasons why!

Fact #1 : This Is Very Old Fake News

First, I should point out that this isn’t a new viral message. This message first appeared in chain letters sent by email sometime in 2009. It then migrated to social media platforms and instant messengers over time.

Fact #2 : No Evidence Dr. Badar Wrote It

There appears to be a neurologist called Dr. Badar Husain Syed, but he is based in Snellville, Georgia, not Atlanta; and he specialises in Sleep Medicine. There is no evidence Dr. Syed ever wrote that viral message.

Fact #3 : Benzene Has Been Linked With Cancer

Benzene is a colourless, volatile chemical with a sweet odour, that is commonly used in many industries. It is found in everything from plastics to lubricants, rubbers, cigarettes, detergents, drugs, pesticides, and even petrol / gasoline.

Studies have shown that exposure to high levels of benzene is associated with increased risk of developing leukaemia. However, it does not appear to be associated with other types of cancer.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies benzene as “carcinogenic to humans”. The US EPA also classifies benzene as “a known human carcinogen”.

Recommended : Did BMW MINI Give Ice-Cream Only To Foreigners In China?!

Fact #4 : American Cancer Society Called It Fake

In 2011, the American Cancer Society (ACS) addressed the viral message, and called it fake news.

We found no published studies that confirm the claims of this e-mail. Benzene levels that exceed recommendations for chronic workplace exposure have been observed in some moving cars, but these levels seem unlikely in properly maintained cars.

Fact #5 : 2007 German Study Disproved Claim

In 2007, the American Chemical Society published a German study called “Toxicity of Parked Motor Vehicle Indoor Air“, which looked at “the health effects of emissions from vehicles exposed to “parked in sunshine” conditions“.

The researchers exposed a new car, as well as a 3 year-old car with identical interior to 14,000 watts of light, and then analysed their indoor air. They found that both cars produced different kinds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs):

Vehicle Age Major VOCs
New Car o,m,p-xylenes, C3 and C4-alkylbenzenes,
dodecane, tridecane, methylpyrrolidinone
3 yo Car acetone, methylpyrrolidinone,
methylcyclohexane, acetaldehyde,
o,m,p-xylenes, ethylhexanol, toluene

Interestingly, the study did not find any significant amount of benzene inside both cars, despite subjecting them to intense levels of light and heat.

The study also found that the indoor air of both cars do not pose apparent health hazards. The amounts of VOCs present in the indoor air collected also did not appear to pose any carcinogenic risk.

No toxicity was observed in any cell line with or without metabolic activation. Neither did we find an effect on type IV sensitization or an irritative potential.

A slight but statistically significant aggravating effect on IgE-mediated immune response of only the new vehicle indoor air was determined (p < 0.05). The IgE-response modulating effect of indoor air might be relevant for atopic individuals.

Else no direct toxicity, no toxicity after metabolic activation by cytochrome P450, and no irritative or type IV sensitizing potential of motor vehicle indoor air were found, neither from the new nor used vehicle. Our investigations indicated no apparent health hazard of parked motor vehicle indoor air.

Recommended : Higher RON Octane Rating Myth Debunked!

Fact #6 : Biggest Benzene Risk Are From Other Causes

Benzene is so commonly used in many products that it is simply impossible to avoid exposure completely. But your car’s indoor air is really the least of your worries, if at all.

Workplace exposure to benzene is a major risk, which is why benzene exposure is heavily regulated at the workplace. Even so, workers in the rubber industry, oil-related industries (including refineries and petrol stations), chemical plants, shoe manufacturers, steel workers, lab technicians and firefighters have increased exposure to benzene.

Outside of the workplace, people are most exposed to benzene from vehicle exhaust fumes, fumes and wastewater from nearby factories, petrol stations, etc. Many people are also exposed to benzene from smoking cigarettes, or second-hand smoke.

To limit your exposure to benzene, American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends doing the following:

Stay away from cigarette smoke. If you are person who smokes, try to quit. It’s also important to avoid secondhand smoke. Cigarette smoke is a major source of benzene exposure.

Pump gas carefully and use gas stations with vapor recovery systems that capture the fumes. Avoid skin contact with gasoline.

When possible, limit the time you spend near idling car engines. This can help lower your exposure to exhaust fumes, which contain benzene (as well as other potentially harmful chemicals).

Use common sense around any chemicals that might contain benzene. Limit or avoid exposure to fumes from solvents, paints, and art supplies, especially in unventilated spaces.

If you are exposed to benzene at your workplace, talk to your employer about limiting your exposure through process changes (such as replacing the benzene with another solvent or enclosing the benzene source) or by using personal protective equipment. If needed, you can also contact the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), which can provide more information or assistance.

Notice how the ACS did not mention driving with your car windows down? Or “flushing” the air inside your car before driving? That’s because there is simply no evidence that there is significant amounts of benzene inside your car.

You Can Renew Expired Driving Licence Without Retaking Test!

You can now renew your long-expired Malaysian driving licence without retaking your driving test!

Amnesty For Expired Driving Licence!

On Wednesday, 3 May 2023, Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced an amnesty for those with expired driving licences. If you have a driving licence that expired as of January 1, 2018, you will be able to renew it without having to take a driving test.

Motorists with expired driving licences longer than a year will have until December 31, 2023, to renew their expired driving licences. The driving test requirement will apply again, from January 1, 2024 onwards.

The government decided to offer this amnesty because many Malaysian living abroad were unable to return during the COVID-19 pandemic to renew them.

We decided to allow the renewal of expired licences given the fact that many Malaysians living abroad were unable to do so during Covid-19 with the movement control order.

This amnesty will also begin on Monday, May 8, and end on December 31, 2023. Please note that this initiative only applies to Malaysian citizens, and not to foreigners holding special passes like the MyKAS card.

In addition, only those who have not been blacklisted by the police, or have any existing restrictions imposed by JPJ, and are free from any suspension due to a conviction or court order may renew their expired driving licence.

Recommended : JPJ : Renew Driving Licence Or Retake Full Driving Test!

Earlier : Retake Driving Test If Licence Not Renewed On Time!

The Malaysia Road Transport Department (JPJ) had been warning motorists to renew their driving licences on time, or risk getting them revoked.

These are the four categories of expired licences that may be revoked, if they are not renewed in time :

  • Learner’s Driving Licence (LDL) : Up to 2 years
  • Probational Driving Licence (PDL) : More than 1 year
  • Competent Driving Licence (CDL) : More than 3 years
  • Public Service Vehicle / Goods Driving Licence (PSV / GDL) : More than 3 years

If your licence is revoked, you will need to undergo the full process to re-qualify and obtain a new licence.

The moratorium on revoking expired driving licences actually expired on 31 December 2021, but JPJ extended it to 30 June 2022 after discovering that hundreds of thousands of drivers have yet to renew their expired licences.

Malaysia Digital Road Tax + Driving Licence FAQ!

Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke addresses the frequently asked questions (FAQ) about the new digital road tax and driving licence initiatives!

Malaysia Adopts Digital Road Tax + Driving Licence!

On Friday, 10 February 2023, Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced the adoption of both a digital road tax (motor vehicle licence), as well as a digital driving licence!

The first phase of this digital transformation initiative will involve private vehicles owned by Malaysian citizens, and certain groups of motorists.

Instead of physical road tax stickers, or physical driving licences, Malaysian citizens can now make use of digital versions using the new MyJPJ mobile app, or through the JPJ online portal.

This move is part of the broader digitalisation plan for JPJ, which should provide a smoother and faster service to the people.

Malaysia Digital Road Tax + Driving Licence FAQ!

Almost immediately after the announcement, Malaysian netizens had a ton of questions and criticisms about the new digital transformation of the road tax and driving licence.

So Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke addressed the frequently asked questions (FAQ) about the new digital road tax and driving licence initiatives!

For the convenience of those who prefer to read the questions and answers in English, here is my translation of his original FAQ in Bahasa Malaysia.

Is it mandatory to download “MyJPJ” apps?

No. This is just one of the options to obtain the digital copy of the road tax, and driving licence.

Is it mandatory to download the “MyJPJ” app?

No. This is just one of the options to obtain the digital copy of the road tax, and driving licence.

If I cannot download the MyJPJ app and cannot show my digital road tax, will I be fined?

No. The enforcement agencies can confirm the status of your road tax and driving licence through the system in the enforcement gadget.

Do we still have to pay for the road tax and driving licence after their validity period ends?

Yes, you still need to pay. Only the [road tax] sticker does not need to be attached.

Recommended : Malaysia Adopts Digital Driving Licence In MyJPJ App!

What happens if senior citizens do not smartphones, or in areas with no Internet access?

Don’t worry, the digital format is not mandatory. You can still obtain the road tax sticker and physical driving licence from JPJ, if required.

You can also use the Print Screen feature on your smartphone to get a copy of your digital road tax, or digital driving licence. Finally, you can also print your digital road tax, or digital driving licence.

How do we show the digital road tax if the car does not belong to the driver?

That’s easy. The digital road tax can be printed and stored in the car. The owner can also share a print screen of the digital road tax with the driver.

In any case, it is not an offence if you cannot show the road tax. The enforcement agencies can check the details in their gadgets.

Why can’t I log into MyJPJ since this morning?

As with any new system, many people are naturally trying to register at the same time. There is very high traffic.

Can we still use the road tax sticker and driving licence card?

Yes, you can still the physical road tax sticker and driving licence. Motorists are offered the option to go digital, or use the physical road tax stickers and driving licence cards.

Recommended : Malaysia Adopts Digital Road Tax : Sticker Not Required!

How is enforcement carried out?

JPJ and police enforcement officers will be given a smartphone gadget with access to the SmED system. They will use the SmED system to check details of the driver and/or vehicle, using:

  • car plate number
  • MyKad number

How long will this interim digitalisation time frame last?

The Transport Ministry will give motorists until the end of 2023 at the very minimum, to register and try out the new digital road tax and digital driving licence.

During this interim period, the digital road tax and digital driving licence are still optional.

How long will this digitalisation process save government money and benefit the people?

The government will save on printing the road tax stickers and physical driving licences. This initiative is expected to save JPJ about RM 96 million a year, and the money saved will be used internally to further develop and upgrade the MyJPJ mobile app.

The public will save money, avoid queuing at JPJ branches, avoid paying third party service providers (like MyEG) or payment gateways, or paying for the delivery of their road tax stickers.

Malaysia Adopts Digital Driving Licence In MyJPJ App!

Malaysia has officially adopted the digital driving licence (e-LLM) for private vehicles owned by Malaysian citizens!

Malaysia Adopts Digital Driving Licence In MyJPJ App!

On Friday, 10 February 2023, Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that, effective immediately, Malaysian citizens no longer need to use a physical driving licence (Lesen Memandu Malaysia, or LLM for short).

Effective 10 February 2023, Malaysian citizens can sign up for their e-LLM digital driving licence through the MyJPJ mobile app, which is available in:

Here are two screenshots of the MyJPJ mobile app, showing the digital driving licence and whether it is still valid, or has expired.

In addition to a digital example of the typical physical card, it has a QR code for enforcement officers to verify. So claims by some netizens that this can be easily photoshopped is nonsensical.

Please note that the e-LLM digital driving licences are optional. You can continue to use your physical driving licence. This is merely a new way that gives you access to a digital copy of your driving licence, and your road tax.

Recommended : Malaysia Adopts Digital Road Tax : Sticker Not Required!

This move is part of the broader digitalisation plan for JPJ, which should provide a smoother and faster service to the people.

I welcome all drivers and vehicle owners to transition to the digital platform. With this, the congestion and long lines at JPJ counters will be reduced.
– Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke

Alternatively, motorists can use the JPJ mySIKAP portal to obtain their e-LLM digital driving licence, which can be printed. A screenshot can also be taken of the e-LLM driving licence to be shown to enforcement officers.

However, it is not an offence if you cannot show enforcement officers your digital driving licence. Police and JPJ enforcers can use their own devices to check your driving licence.

Finally, JPJ will continue to offer the physical driving licence to motorists who still prefer it, or need one to drive overseas. These physical cards will be available at JPJ branches.

The alternative methods of using a screenshot and/or printed certificate are useful for drivers who are not tech-savvy. They can get their family members to help them register and print their digital driving licence.

And of course, physical driving licences are still available for those who prefer the “old school” ways, or need them to drive overseas.

Physical Driving Licence Still Required For Some Motorists

Please note that the move to a digital driving licence is currently limited to selected Malaysian citizens. Holders of these driving licences must continue to bring their physical cards.

  • Learner’s Driving Licence (LDL)
  • Vocational Driving Licence (PSV / GDL / KON)
  • Malaysia Driving Licence for Foreigners
  • Foreign Driving Licence (IDP)

Loke said that enforcement action will continue, and the police and JPJ enforcers will use their own devices to check on the driver’s road tax status.

I want to stress that enforcement action will continue to be taken against anyone found driving a vehicle without a valid motor vehicle or driving licence, in line with the Road Transport Act.
– Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke

Recommended : JPJ : Renew Driving Licence Or Retake Full Driving Test!

e-LLM Digital Driving Licence Initiative : Good Or Bad?

While some people are already complaining about the hassle of opening a mobile app, or printing a physical copy, the move to digitising the driving licence is inevitable.

Digitising the driving licence would mean you can now renew it online, or through the MyJPJ app, saving you time and the hassle of going to a JPJ branch or post office. You can now renew your driving licence from the comfort of your own home / office, at any time of the day!

Moving to a digital driving licence also means you no longer have to worry about losing your physical licence, or paying for a replacement! All that is not only history with the digital driving licence, you can actually print multiple copies!

As for claims that anyone with Photoshop can create their own digital driving licence, any police or JPJ enforcement officer can easily verify if your driving licence is legitimate by checking the JPJ database. That’s why there is now a QR code.

In fact, the digitisation of driving licences will make it easier for enforcement officers. They don’t even need to check your MyJPJ app. They can simply use their own devices to quickly determine if you have a valid driving licence, even if you forgot to bring yours!

Malaysia Adopts Digital Road Tax : Sticker Not Required!

Malaysia has officially adopted the digital motor vehicle licence (e-LKM), removing the need for physical road tax stickers on vehicle windshields!

Malaysia Adopts Digital Road Tax : Windshield Sticker Not Required!

On Friday, 10 February 2023, Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that, effective immediately, private vehicles owned by Malaysian citizens no longer need to display their motor vehicle licence (Lesen Kenderaan Motor, or LKM for short), which is colloquially known as the “road tax”.

Effective 10 February 2023, the Malaysia Transport Ministry will no longer enforce Section 20 of the Road Transport Act, which states that motor vehicle licences must be fixed to, and exhibited, on all vehicles.

Any summons issued for not displaying the road tax sticker will be classified as “No Further Action”.

In line with this initiative, the provision under Section 20 of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) where “each vehicle registration licence must be affixed and displayed on the relevant vehicle will no longer be enforced for the category of owners under the first phase.

This exemption will be gazetted under the authority given to the Minister of Transport under Section 127(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

This initiative will be implemented in stages, with the first phase involving individual private vehicles, including motorcycles, owned by Malaysians.
– Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke

During this first phase, other vehicles must still display their road tax / motor vehicle licences, including:

  • private vehicles owned by private companies
  • private vehicles owned by foreigners
  • commercial vehicles
  • public service vehicles

This move is part of the broader digitalisation plan for JPJ, which should provide a smoother and faster service to the people.

I welcome all drivers and vehicle owners to transition to the digital platform. With this, the congestion and long lines at JPJ counters will be reduced.
– Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke

Please note that the e-LKM digital road tax is optional. You can continue to use your physical road tax sticker. This is merely a new way that gives you access to a digital copy of your driving licence, and your road tax.

Recommended : Malaysia Adopts Digital Driving Licence In MyJPJ App!

Private Vehicle Road Tax Now Available Through MyJPJ App!

Please note that this does not mean the road tax has been abolished. You still need to pay for the road tax. It is merely the physical motor vehicle licence that has been abolished.

But do not think you don’t have to pay for your Road Tax anymore. You still have to pay for it

I want to stress that enforcement action will continue to be taken against anyone found driving a vehicle without a valid motor vehicle or driving licence, in line with the Road Transport Act.
– Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke

Instead of physical road tax stickers, motorists will now obtain their digital road tax certificates (e-LKM) through the MyJPJ mobile app, which is available in:

Motorists can also use the app to show enforcement officers their e-LKM digital road tax certificates. However, this is not necessary.

Loke said that it is not an offence if you cannot show enforcement officers your digital road tax certificate. On top of that, the police and JPJ enforcers can use their own devices to check on the vehicle’s road tax status.

Recommended : JPJ : Renew Driving Licence Or Retake Full Driving Test!

Alternatively, motorists can use the JPJ mySIKAP portal to obtain their e-LKM digital road tax certificates, which can be printed. A screenshot can also be taken of the e-LKM to be shown to enforcement officers.

Finally, JPJ will continue to offer the printed sticker to motorists who still prefer to install it on their cars. These printed stickers will be available at JPJ branches.

The alternative methods of using a screenshot and/or printed certificate are useful if the driver is not the actual owner of the car. And of course, the physical road tax stickers are still available for those who prefer the “old school” ways.

e-LKM Digital Road Tax Initiative : Good Or Bad?

While some people are already complaining about the hassle of opening a mobile app, or printing a physical copy, the move to digitising the motor vehicle licence / road tax is inevitable.

Digitising the motor vehicle licence would mean you can now renew it online, or through the MyJPJ app, saving you time and the hassle of going to a JPJ branch and queuing up.

Even if you have to print a physical copy, it is still cheaper than paying for MYEG delivery of the road tax, or actually spending your time and money to get the sticker.

And did you forget what a chore it was to install the road tax sticker every year? We all had to very carefully peel the sticker the right way, or risk tearing it!

All that will be history now that we are moving to digital certificates that we can retrieve online, from the MyJPJ app, or print anytime we want, from the comfort of our own home / office!

As for the claim that the digital motor vehicle certificate will make it easier for people to steal cars – that’s just absurd. People have been stealing vehicles even with a physical road tax sticker. Moving to a digital certificate won’t make it easier for thieves to steal your vehicle!

In fact, now that the road taxes / motor vehicle licences are digitised, it will be easier for enforcement officers as they can now check your vehicle’s validity using their own devices. They no longer need to peek at your road tax sticker.

Malaysia Transport Minister Anthony Loke just announced a lorry ban, and that seven major offences will be non-compoundable this Chinese New Year!

CNY 2023 : Traffic Offenders Will Be Sent To Court!

On Wednesday, 17 January 2023, the Transport Minister of Malaysia, Anthony Loke, announced that seven traffic offences will be non-compoundable throughout the Chinese New Year festive season.

Motorists who commit these seven offences will no longer be allowed to just pay a fine, but will instead be referred to the courts.

  • Cutting queue
  • Overtaking on double lines
  • Running the red light
  • Driving over the speed limit
  • Using mobile phones while driving
  • Not wearing a seat belt or helmet
  • Driving on the emergency lane

The seven major traffic offenses are cutting queue, overtaking on double lines, disobeying the red light signal, driving over the speed limit, use of mobile phones while driving, not wearing a seat belt or helmet and driving on the emergency lane.

There will be no compound issues for these offences. Offenders will be referred to court.

To ensure stricter enforcement this year, about 2,000 JPJ enforcement officers will be deployed this Chinese New Year to reduce accidents and deaths.

CNY 2023 : Lorries + Heavy Vehicles Banned!

PDRM : Jail / Fine If Third Brake Light Not Working!

PDRM is reminding all motorists to ensure that their cars’ third brake light is working, or they could be subject to a fine or jail time!

PDRM : Jail / Fine If Third Brake Light Not Working!

On 18 December 2022, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) issued a new reminder to all motorists in light of the monsoon season’s heavy rains.

PDRM wants all drivers to ensure that their cars’ third brake light is fully functional, or they could face a fine or even jail time.

Drivers who fail to ensure that their vehicles have a working third brake light can be charged under Section 119(2) of the Road Transportation Act 1987. If convicted, they would be subject to:

  • a fine of up to RM 2,000, or
  • jail of not more than six months.

PDRM issued this warning and reminder as vehicles that do not have a working third brake light will pose a danger at night and when it rains – other drivers won’t be aware of when you brake, and could end up hitting your car in the back.

Recommended : Are Petronas Petrol Stations Cheating At The Pump?

Why Is Third Brake Light So Important?

Many motorists take the third brake light for granted, thinking it’s an “extra” or “backup” light to supplement the existing brake lights. That’s not true – it has been shown to reduce rear-ended accidents by 50%!

The third brake light is often located at the top or bottom of your car’s rear windshield, or on the car’s spoiler in some cases. It only lights up whenever you step on the brake pedal, making it clear to the driver behind you that you are braking.

In addition, the third brake light’s central and elevated position makes it easier for drivers behind you to spot, especially in poor lighting conditions, or when they are driving close to your car.

This really helps to cut down on rear-ended accidents, and is why the third brake light is mandatory in all new vehicles in most countries worldwide.

Recommended : Higher RON Octane Rating Myth Debunked!

Whenever you send your vehicle for servicing, the mechanic will usually check all of your lights. But it is also important to check your lights once in a while, as they can potentially fail at any time.

The easiest way to check if your third brake light is working, is to get someone else to look at it while you step on the brake pedal.

But if you are alone, you can reverse your car against a wall, so you can see the third brake light reflecting off the wall when you step on the brake pedal.

Did Ismail Sabri Order Maybach Pullman S 650 Limo?!

Did former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri order a Mercedes-Benz S 650 Maybach Pullman limousine that costs RM3.8 million?!

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : Ismail Sabri Ordered Maybach Pullman S 650 Limo!

At the end of November 2022, this message (together with a link and a screenshot) went viral on WhatsApp and social media, claiming to be evidence that former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri ordered a Mercedes-Benz S 650 Maybach Pullman limousine that costs RM3.8 million!

It also alleged that new Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to auction off the Maybach Pullman S 650 limousine, instead of using it.

Previous PM, Ismail Sabri order a MAYBACH Pullman Benz S650, RM3,800,000 without any Tax!!

Anwar refused to use it, but soon expected for Auction it!

Note : I placed a FALSE overlay to prevent the viral message from being further abused.

Claim : Ismail Sabri Ordered Maybach Pullman S 650 Limo!

That is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp and social media, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : A Mercedes-Benz S600 Was Ordered, Not S 650 Maybach Pullman

On 28 November 2022, the new Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim spoke out about this claim.

He confirmed that a vehicle was ordered by a previous Prime Minister, but did not specific who it was.

He also confirmed that the model was a Mercedes-Benz S600 limousine, not the Maybach Pullman S 650.

Fact #2 : Mercedes-Benz S600 Is Different From S 650 Maybach Pullman

Both the S600 and the S 650 Maybach Pullman limousines are from the same company – Mercedes-Benz. However, they are completely different vehicles.

The S600 is an S-class sedan which seats four people. It has been discontinued, but was priced at over RM1.7 million when it was launched in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the S 650 Maybach Pullman is an ultra-premium stretch limousine that is much longer than the Mercedes-Benz S600, seating six people.

It is also significantly more expensive, with a base price of around half a million euros or about RM2.3 million.

Fact #3 : Mercedes-Benz S600 Order Was Cancelled

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also said that he cancelled the order for the Mercedes-Benz S600 limousine, so there was no need to auction it off, as the viral message claimed.

The Mercedes has not arrived yet, so I’m using this (Toyota Camry), okay? (I’ll just use) any car that’s available.

Actually, this (the S-class Mercedes) was ordered by a previous prime minister, but I checked to see whether we could cancel. (Thankfully) we could.

Anwar Ibrahim also said that no new official car will be purchased for his use, and no renovations would be carried out at his office, as part of a new culture against public funds wastage.

Fact #4 : Mercedes-Benz S600 Purchased Over Two Administrations

Interestingly, Berita Harian said that the purchase of the Mercedes-Benz S600 was first mooted during the Muhyiddin Yassin government, but only approved during the Ismail Sabri Yaakob government.

Beginning 22 November, 2022 until a time to be determined, PORM will launch road blocks at strategic locations in every district, across the country on a 24-hour basis.

The establishment of the roadblocks is part of PDRM’s crime prevention efforts through increasing the level of omnipresence to guarantee public safety and order.

For the comfort of road users and to ensure smooth traffic flow, the roadblocks will not operational during peak hours / daytime. The public is requested to cooperate with orders given at the roadblocks, especially outside of peak hours.

The community does not need to worry about carrying out daily activities because PDRM guarantees that public safety is under control.

Did HBB 5277 Taxi Driver Vandalise PH Flags?!

Was the HBB 5277 taxi driver caught on video vandalising Pakatan Harapan flags?!

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : HBB 5277 Taxi Driver Caught Vandalising PH Flags!

A video showing the driver of taxi number HBB 5277 has gone viral on WhatsApp, TikTok, Facebook and Twitter, with many people accusing him of vandalising Pakatan Harapan flags in the run-up to GE15 – the 15th Malaysia General Election!

A taxi man (HBB 5277) destroying “PAKATAN” Flags. Pls viral as much as possible to reach Police Attention🙄😡

Nobody excels in ESPIONAGE and CLANDESTINE activities as well as the CURRENT RULING PARTY in MALAYSIA does!

Their “playbook” is FULL OF DIRTY TRICKS!

A taxi man [HBB 5277] destroying “PAKATAN” Flags.

Pls viral as much as possible to reach Police Attention🙄 😡

Recommended : Is There A Dress Code For GE15 Election Voters?!

Truth : HBB 5277 Taxi Driver Did NOT Vandalise PH Flags!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp and social media, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : Destroying Political Flags During Election Is A Crime

First, let me just establish the fact that it is a crime to destroy political flags or election materials during the campaigning period of any election in Malaysia.

Several police reports have already been lodged regarding the defacement or destruction of flags, banners and other election materials during the GE15 campaigning period.

These crimes are classified under Section 427 of the Penal Code of Malaysia – those who are convicted may be sentenced to 1 to 5 years of jail, and/or a fine.

Therefore, most of these vandalism occur when no one is looking, and where there is no CCTV coverage to catch the perpetrator in the act. So anyone participating in this crime will always run once they realise that they are being recorded on video.

That’s why this video was so perplexing when I first saw it. The man didn’t seem perturbed that someone else was recording him while he was casually and slowly removing the flags.

Fact #2 : Pakatan Harapan Allegedly Clarified He’s Part Of Their Team

Hours after the video went viral all over WhatsApp and social media, Pakatan Harapan allegedly clarified that the man in the video is part of their team, and was merely removing the flags to replant them elsewhere, as instructed by the police.

Please be informed that PH have clarified that the person shown in the video is part of their team, the flags were fixed in a prohibited location along the museum thus police have instructed to remove and fix at other locations. That’s why he removed the flags gently not trash like others do. Please spread this information before someone beats up this taxi driver HBB 5277 for no reason.
Guys, only post information if you know the facts.

Unfortunately, I am unable to confirm (yet) that the message came from Pakatan Harapan, as their social media pages have neither mentioned the viral video, or clarified the matter officially.

Fact #3 : HBB 5277 Taxi Driver Is SPR Enforcement Agent For Pakatan Harapan

The good news is – the driver himself posted a video, identifying himself as Mohammad Affendi – an Election Commission (SPR) enforcement agent for Pakatan Harapan in Lembah Pantai.

He explained that he was removing the Pakatan Harapan flags because they were wrongly placed outside government buildings or tourist attractions, which is against the law.

He also asked that anyone who doubts his explanation or his identity to verify them with the Election Commission (SPR).

The Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) is no longer free for public use.

SUKE is now fully operational, with motorists charged RM2.30 at the Bukit Teratai and Ampang toll plazas for Class 1 vehicles.

That means motorists will pay RM4.60 to travel from the Phase 1 stretch from the Cheras-Kajang Interchange to Bukit Antarabangsa.

Once the third toll plaza at Alam Damai is open, and if it also applies the same RM2.30 toll rate, then it will cost Class 1 motorists a total of RM6.90 to travel the full length of the SUKE highway in either direction.

These toll rates officially take effect at 12:01 AM on Saturday, October 15, 2022:

Type Vehicle
Class
Details Toll Rate
Car 1 Vehicle with two axles and
three / four wheels
(not including taxi or bus)

Lorry 2 Vehicle with two axles and

Trailer 3 Vehicle with three axles or more

Car 4 Taxi RM 1.20
Bus 5 Bus RM 2.30

SUKE Highway : Launched In September, Free For 1 Month!

SUKE was officially launched on September 16, 2022, with Phase 1 made free to use for one month.

The 16.6 kilometre stretch of Phase 1 of the SUKE highway runs from the Cheras-Kajang Interchange to Bukit Antarabangsa. The subsequent stretch from Sri Petaling and KESAS Highway to Cheras-Kajang will open at a later date.

SUKE will have three toll plazas – Alam Damai, Bukit Teratai and Ampang, of which only the Bukit Teratai and Ampang toll plazas are open.

Once fully completed, SUKE will have 14 interchanges in total – Sri Petaling, Sungai Besi, Alam Damai, Cheras-Kajang, Cheras-Hartamas, Bukit Teratai, Tasik Tambahan, Permai, Kosas, Pekan Ampang, Ampang Point, Ulu Kelang, Hillview, and Bukit Antarabangsa.

SUKE is notable for featuring Malaysia’s first helicoidal ramp – the Cheras-Kajang Expressway (CKE) connects to SUKE through two spiral loops.

Tragically, it was also involved in an accident that killed three people during its construction.

Toll Fares Reduced For Six Klang Valley Highways!

Toll fares for six major Klang Valley highways will be reduced this month, and next year, in what appears to be a GE15 election sweetener!

Toll Fares Reduced For Six Klang Valley Highways!

On Thursday, October 13, 2022, the caretaker Prime Minister of Malaysia, Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced a toll fare reduction for six major Klang Valley highways.

The toll fares for these four highways will be reduced on Thursday, October 20, 2022:

  • Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH)
  • Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE)
  • Kemuning-Shah Alam Highway (LKSA)
  • Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway (SILK)

The toll fares for these two highways will be reduced on Sunday, January 1, 2023:

  • Kajang-Seremban Highway (LEKAS)
  • Besraya Highway

According to Ismail Sabri, the decision to reduce the toll fares for the first four highways was made in a Cabinet meeting on May 18, while the decision to reduce the toll fares for the last two highways was made on June 1.

Parliament was dissolved on October 10, paving the way for the GE15 general elections within 60 days. The fact that this decision was only announced after Parliament dissolution can be seen as an election sweetener.

Read more : How Malaysians Can Register For Postal Vote!

Ismail Sabri also announced that the government agreed on March 4 to:

  • widen the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) and add a new lane from the Gombak toll plaza to the Bentong Toll Plaza, to reduce traffic jams,
  • construct a new tunnelled road at Genting Sempah to accommodate higher traffic and reduce congestion
  • initiate flood mitigation works on the East Coast Expressway Phase 1

All these improvement works took the restructuring of toll rates into account, with supplementary concession agreements being finalised.

Through this latest restructuring, the government has saved approximately RM8.8 billion in compensation that should have been paid to the concessionaires involved. Additionally, highway users can enjoy lower toll rates to ease the cost of living.

The Sara Lee Car Accident / Death Video Scam!

Does a death video showing the terrible car accident that killed former WWE star Sara Lee really exist?!

Take a look at the viral claims, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : Here Is The Sara Lee Car Accident / Death Video!

A number of rumour / fake news websites are now capitalising on the sudden death of former WWE star Sara Lee.

They are claiming that they have the video of how he died, posting on YouTube

Breaking News Today : Former WWE Wrestler Sara Lee Death Video

Breaking News Today : Former WWE Wrestler Sara Lee Car Accident Video

SMBTechConsultants : Sara Lee WWE Cause Death Last Video

Truth : There Is No Sara Lee Car Accident / Death Video!

This is another example of FAKE NEWS that some websites and YouTube channels create for more views and money, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : Unknown How Sara Lee Died

It is still unknown how Sara Lee died. Her cause of death has not been revealed.

Her mother announced her death on Facebook, on Friday, October 7, 2022, but did not reveal her cause of death.

It is with heavy hearts we wanted to share that our Sara Weston has gone to be with Jesus. We are all in shock and arrangements are not complete. We ask that you respectfully let our family mourn. We all need prayers especially Cory and her children.

It is possible that Sara Lee may have died in a car accident, or in a gym bathroom. But until her cause of death is revealed by her family or the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office, anyone who tells you that she died from this or that cause is lying.

Fact #2 : Sara Lee Videos Are All Fake

A number of these websites created fake YouTube videos with misleading titles, claiming to show Sara Lee’s death. Terribly ghoulish and insensitive, if you ask me.

Fortunately – they are ALL fake, if you click and watch those videos. And why not? No one actually knows how she died, much less was present to record it all on video!

Even if someone actually recorded Sara Lee’s death on video (instead of rushing to help), he/she would have provided the video to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, and certainly not leaked to some Indian / Pakistani website or YouTube channel!

Fact #3 : Title Screens Are Intentionally Misleading

To mislead you, these fake video creators used misleading photo collages of Sara Lee and some random car accident.

One YouTube channel – Breaking News Today, for example, created and posted two videos, claiming that Sara Lee both died in a car accident AND died after collapsing in the gym bathroom.

To be clear – there is no video footage of Sara Lee dying.

Recommended : The Kalani David Death Video Scam!

Fact #4 : None Of Them Offered Any Evidence

No reputable media outlet know Sara Lee’s cause of death, much less recorded it all on video for our ghoulish entertainment.

Yet, these no-name websites out of India and Pakistan somehow managed to get their grubby little hands on the “car accident video” or “death video” of Sara Lee?

None of those websites claiming to show the Sara Lee death video offered anything remotely close to “evidence”. Their articles will mention “car accident” or “death video” for SEO reasons, but offer nothing else.

Fact #5 : This Is Just Another Example Of Celebrity Fake News

This is yet another example of fake news created by rumour and fake news blogs to drive traffic and increase page views for ad money. Here are examples of other celebrity fake news that we debunked earlier:

Don’t fall for the fake news / fake videos created by people whose only motivation is to make money from your views and clicks.

PLUS Warns Of 7.6 Million Vehicle Jam This Weekend!

PLUS is warning the public to expect a massive traffic jam this long weekend, with over 7.6 million vehicles estimated to swarm its highways!

PLUS Warns Of 7.6 Million Vehicle Jam This Weekend!

PLUS is warning the public to expect a massive traffic jam, with over 7.6 million vehicles estimated to swarm its highways over the next four days!

Many Malaysians are expected to take advantage during the Maulidur Rasul (Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday) holiday, offering a 3-day weekend from Saturday to Monday.

In its statement released on Wednesday, 5 October 2022, PLUS said that they are estimating 1.9 million vehicles per day to use its highways from Friday until Monday.

LUS Head of Operations Excellence, Mohd Yusuf Abdul Aziz said PLUS has recorded daily traffic volumes of an average of 1.7 million vehicles since moving to the endemic phase and the trend had shown spikes of 1.9 million vehicles before each weekend.

We expect with more travellers taking advantage of the three-day weekend, traffic will be higher and a longer journey can be expected.

Therefore, we advise highway customers to be prepared and ensure their vehicles are fit for a longer drive this weekend.

How To Prepare For Traffic Jam On PLUS This Weekend!

PLUS is advising its highway users to expect a longer journey, and prepare for the inevitable traffic jam. Here are some tips to help prepare for a smoother journey this long weekend.

  1. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition and fit for a longer travel.
    a) Service your vehicle if necessary
    b) Ensure the tyres are in good condition, and properly inflated
    c) Ensure that the brakes are working properly
    d) Top up the fuel tank for a longer journey
  2. Top up your Touch ‘n Go card and/or TNG eWallet (if you are using TNG RFID).
  3. Get traffic updates from PLUS through :
    a)Twitter (@PLUSTrafik),
    b) PLUSLine hotline : 1800-88-0000
    c) PUTRI chatbot on the PLUS app
    d) Electronic signboards at various locations along the highways
  4. Use Waze or Google Maps to get live traffic updates, and to plan your travel.
  5. Please make sure you enter and exit the highway using the correct toll booth based on your payment type.
If you entered using TNG RFID, you must exit using TNG RFID.
Only Touch ‘n Go card users may alternately use the SmartTag booth (if they have one), or the TnG card booth.

While you are no longer required to wear a face mask indoors or outdoors, the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM) strongly recommends wearing one at highway rest stops, as they will inevitably be crowded.

How Ice Cream (Dry Ice) Nearly Killed This Lady!

Find out HOW dry ice used to keep ice-cream cold nearly killed this lady in India, and WHY we must all be aware of this silent danger!

Claim : Ice Cream (Dry Ice) Nearly Killed This Lady!

People are sharing this long message about a lady who was nearly killed by dry ice used to keep her ice-cream cold.

It’s very long, so feel free to skip to the next section to find out what the facts really are!

A SOCIAL WARNING TEXT FROM INDIA

Ice Cream near death
_________

Dry ice kept with Naturals ice cream can be Fatal

Please do read it, won’t take much of a time but can help saving your loved and near ones.

I Nidhi Singal Gupta on 5th August evening, around 4pm went to Naturals ice cream parlour in Lajpat Nagar, Delhi, thinking I would send ice cream cartons to my brother – as a Raksha Bandhan gift.

Truth : Dry Ice Nearly Killed That Lady, But It Was Exceptional

This is one of the very few viral warnings on WhatsApp that turn out to be TRUE.

Here is what you need to know about her case and the dangers of dry ice.

Fact #1 : The Incident Happened In August 2017

The viral message has been circulating for some 5 years now. The incident happened on 5 August 2017.

Nidhi Singal Gupta bought 11 cartons (not packs) of ice-cream. To ensure that they won’t melt for the next 18 hours, the ice-cream parlour workers packed the ice-cream cartons with dry ice in her car boot.

After driving for some 10 minutes, she felt breathless and Fortunately, she was found and taken to the Moolchand Hospital, where she recovered and was discharged on the same day.

Fact #2 : Dry Ice Is Frozen Carbon Dioxide

Dry ice is basically frozen carbon dioxide. Unlike normal ice, it does not “melt”, but converts into carbon dioxide gas – a process called sublimation.

Dry ice is commonly used to keep ice-cream cold because it is colder than ice, and does not melt into water, or leave any residue.

Fact #3 : Dry Ice Can Cause Frostbite + Hypercapnia

Because dry ice is super cold (−78.5 °C / −109.2 °F), it can cause frostbite injury if improperly handled.

The outgassing of carbon dioxide can cause hypercapnia – abnormally elevated carbon dioxide in the blood, if it happens in an enclosed space.

Initially, people who suffer from hypercapnia may experience headache, confusion and disorientation – just like what Nidhi Singal Gupta experienced. But in extreme cases, it could potentially kill the person.

Because carbon dioxide is colourless and odourless, people are often not aware of the danger. Dry ice should be kept tightly sealed, or exposed to open air in a well-ventilated environment.

Fact #4 : The Dry Ice Was Left Inside Hot Car For An Hour

The ice-cream that Nidhi bought for her brother was stored in the car boot, together with dry ice. Normally, this would keep any outgassing carbon dioxide within the car boot.

However, Nidhi did not immediately drive to deliver the ice-cream. Instead, she left the ice-cream with the dry ice  in her car boot for an hour, before driving to her brother’s house.

In August 2017, the ambient temperature in New Delhi hit 38°C. The tremendous amount of carbon dioxide outgassing from dry ice stored in a hot car boot would likely have leaked into the car cabin itself.

That would explain why she felt disorientated and confused after driving just 10 minutes.

Fact #5 : Windows Were Closed + Air-Conditioning Was Turned On

The danger to Nidhi was compounded by the fact that all of the car windows were closed, and air-conditioning was turned on.

Carbon dioxide is heavier than oxygen, and would normally “settle” to the bottom if undisturbed. However, air-conditioning in a sealed car would certainly have stirred and mixed it with the remaining air in the cabin.

This would have increased the carbon dioxide concentration in the air that she breathed in. And no fresh air was coming into the cabin, only carbon dioxide outgassing from the car boot.

Fact #6 : She Should Have Exited Her Car

While Nidhi credited sending her location to her husband as the act that saved her life, that’s not really true.

She could have saved her own life by simply exiting her car, or at least opening the door / windows. By remaining in the car, she continued to breathe in the CO2-heavy air.

If you are ever in the same situation, do NOT waste your time fiddling with your phone, or sending your location to anyone. STOP the vehicle and GET OUT right away.

Fact #7 : Dry Ice Has Killed / Almost Killed People

In August 2018, a 77 year-old woman in the state of Washington, United States, died from dry ice used to keep ice-cream cold.

Her son owned an ice-cream delivery service, and he kept four cooler boxes filled with dry ice for an upcoming delivery. His wife who didn’t know that, drove his car to send his mother home.

They were found a few blocks away several hours later, unconscious. By the time EMTs arrived, his mother was dead and his wife was in a critical condition.

In 2004, a man passed out in Alabama while driving with four large blocks of dry ice, which he bought to keep food cool in case of a power outage after Hurricane Ivan. His wife fortunately found him in time, and opened the car door.

Fact #8 : Dry Ice Is Safe, If Properly Handled

While this is a genuine case of a near-death experience with dry ice, it is generally safe to use dry ice to keep food products cold.

We must, however, understand the risks, and learn how to properly handle dry ice :

  • Do not handle large quantities of dry ice, unless you are properly trained.
  • Do not travel with large quantities of dry ice in your vehicle.
  • If you need to transport large quantities of dry ice, open your vehicle windows to ensure good ventilation.
  • If you feel disorientated while travelling with dry ice, immediately stop and exit the vehicle. If that’s not possible, open as many windows as you can.

XPeng Engineer Guilty Of Stealing Apple Car Secrets!

An XPeng engineer just pleaded guilty to stealing trade secrets from the Apple Project Titan self-driving car program!

Here is what we know so far…

XPeng Engineer Guilty Of Stealing Apple Car Secrets!

A former Apple engineer who joined Xpeng – the Chinese electric vehicle maker, just pleaded guilty to the criminal charge of stealing trade secrets from the Apple self-driving car program!

Zhang Xiaolang initially pleaded not guilty to the charges, but he reached a plea deal with prosecutors and changed his plea to guilty, according to court documents released on Monday, August 22, 2022.

The plea deal is sealed, so the details are unknown. Zhang’s attorney, Daniel Olmos, confirmed the plea agreement but declined to comment on the details. Sentencing however is set for November 2022.

Zhang faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, and a $250,000 fine. With this plea deal, he should serve a much shorter sentence.

In addition to Zhang, US federal prosecutors also charged Chen Jizhong with stealing secrets from the Apple self-driving car program. Chen, however, continues to plead not guilty, and will have his day in court on August 29, 2022.

Chen is also represented by the same lawyer as Zhang – Daniel Olmos.

How XPeng Engineer Stole Apple Car Secrets!

Zhang Xiaolang worked on the Apple Project Titan autonomous vehicle program as a hardware engineer between 2015 and 2018, during which he designed and tested circuit boards.

He travelled to China during his paternity leave in 2018, and on returning in April 2018, he told his boss at Apple that he was leaving to work for XPeng (Guangzhou Xiaopeng Motors Technology) in China.

XPeng, also known as XMotors in the United States, is a Chinese electric car startup backed by Alibaba, Foxconn and IDG Capital. It has developed electric cars like the XPeng G3 and XPeng P5.

His boss felt that Zhang was “being evasive” during the meeting. There was also increased network activity and visits to his office, before he resigned. All that led to an internal Apple investigation of his two company-issued phones and laptop.

That’s when they discovered that Zhang had been downloading confidential files from the Apple lab during his time away. He was also caught on CCTV removing circuit boards and a Linux server from their lab.

Zhang’s network activity was found to consist of “both bulk searches and targeted downloading copious pages of information from the various confidential database applications“.

Zhang was arrested at the San Jose airport in July 7, 2018, before he could board a last-minute, one-way flight to China aboard Hainan Airlines.

In an interview with Apple’s security team, Zhang admitted that he downloaded the data online, and removed hardware from its labs. He also admitted to the FBI that he stored the files he downloaded on his wife’s laptop.

The FBI described the data he stoled as “largely technical in nature, including engineering schematics, technical reference manuals, and technical reports“.

The files – about 24 GB worth – include a 25-page document containing engineering schematics of a circuit board, as well as technical manuals and PDFs related to the Apple self-driving car prototype.

The other Apple engineer to be charged with stealing secrets of its autonomous car project – Chen Jizhong – was accused of stealing stolen thousands of sensitive documents, as well as 100 photos taken inside its self-driving facility – all discovered in a hard disk drive he owned.

Chen was also arrested when he attempted to board a flight to China, ostensibly to visit his ill father.

XPeng Denies Involvement In Theft Of Apple Car Secrets!

XPeng said in a Weibo post that it was aware of the plea agreement from media reports, but it was “not clear about the details, nor involved in further investigation conducted by US law enforcement“.

It has been more than four years into the case, and we are not aware of the specifics of the case and have not been involved in the follow-up investigation of the case by the US judiciary.

We also have no relevant dispute with Apple and have no connection with the case. We strictly abide by relevant laws and attaches great importance to intellectual property protection.

Zhang joined XMotors in May 2018, but the company quickly distanced itself from its employee, stating on July 11, 2021 :

There is no indication that he has ever communicated any sensitive information from Apple to XMotors.

XMotors always has strictly abided by the laws of China and the United States and takes protection of intellectual property rights seriously.

Company spokesperson Isabel Jiang also stated that once they were notified in late June 2018 that US authorities were investigating Zhang, they secured his computer and office equipment and denied him access to his work. They subsequently fired him.

XPeng also said that Zhang signed an intellectual property compliance document on the day he joined, and that there was “no record that he reported any sensitive and illegal situations” to the company.

Auto Global Parts Industries : Closed With 94 COVID Cases!

Auto Global Parts Industries shut down indefinitely after 94 employees tested positive for COVID-19 in a screening test!

Auto Global Parts Industries : 94 Employees Positive For COVID-19!

On 28 December 2020, New Hoong Fatt Holdings Berhad announced that 94 employees at Auto Global Parts Industries in Meru, Klang tested positive for COVID-19.

This affected employees tested positive during a screening test carried out on 24 December 2020, involving a total of 314 employees.

They are all now receiving treatment at designated government facilities, and their primary contacts have also been identified.

New Hoong Fatt Holdings Berhad decided to close Auto Global Parts Industries from 25 December 2020 until further notice for disinfection and sanitisation.

They will also disinfect and sanitise their foreign employees’ hostels, as per KKM guidelines.

Fortunately, this did not affect their plastic parts factory located at a different location, which is still in operation. Their office operations are also unaffected, with Management and supervisory staff working from home.

Auto Global Parts Industries COVID Exposure : Should You Be Concerned?

As per MOH guidelines, they will be performing contact tracing, and contacting those who came in close contact with the affected employee.

If you happened to be in close contact with the affected Auto Global Parts Industries employees, you will be contacted and asked to self-quarantine as well as undergo a screening test.

This case highlights the risks of staying in close quarters in worker hostels, and why the government continues to insist that office employees must work from home.

You are only at risk if you come into close contact with these affected employees, including outsiders supplying and transporting in and out of their factory.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is easily destroyed by soap, so the deep cleaning operation will definitely clean the building of any infectious particles, albeit only temporarily.

The best way to protect yourself is to always wear a face mask in public. Face masks have been proven to prevent the spread and reduce the risk of being infected.

Auto Global Parts Industries : Official Statement On COVID-19 Cases

This was the official statement posted by New Hoong Fatt Holdings Berhad on 28 December 2020 :

New Hoong Fatt Holdings Berhad (“the Company”) had commenced its planned precautionary COVID-19 testing of all foreign and local employees of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Auto Global Parts Industries Sdn Bhd (“AGP”). The screening test was conducted on 24 December 2020 at AGP’s metal parts production factory in Meru, Klang, involving a total of 314 employees.

There were 94 employees of AGP have been tested positive for COVID-19 during the planned screening test. The affected employees are currently receiving appropriate treatment at designated Government facilities as directed by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (“KKM”) and all primary contacts of the affected employees have been identified.

As an immediate response to protect the health and safety of the workforce and the community at large, the Company has temporarily closed the affected metal parts production factory from 25 December 2020 until further notice to contain potential infection. The Management of AGP is undertaking disinfection and sanitisation procedures on the affected production factory as well as on foreign employees’ hostels as per the guidelines provided by KKM. In addition, the Company has notified all employees as well as AGP’s suppliers and customers about the confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The Company’s plastic parts production factory, which is situated at a different location, is currently in operation. The office operations are unaffected as the Company has been practicing working from home for its Management and supervisory staff. The Company will continue to adhere to COVID-19 preventive standard operating procedures issued by the relevant authorities from time to time and work closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the health and safety of all its employees.

As this has been planned by the Management, the temporary closure of the metal parts production factory is not expected to have any material impact on the Group’s revenue and earnings for the financial year ending 31 December 2020.

Fact Check : Car Seating SOP For CMCO / PKPB Lockdown?

You may have seen this car seating SOP for the CMCO / PKPKB lockdowns affecting various areas in Malaysia.

But is it legitimate? Will you get fined by the police if you do not follow this car seating SOP?

Claim : This Is The Car Seating SOP For CMCO / PKPB Lockdown

This WhatsApp message is being forwarded as a warning to everyone under CMCO / PKPB lockdown in Malaysia :

My sis was sitting in front car seat with her hubby this morning.

At the police checkpoint at Sri Petaling, they were told that no front passenger allowed n are being let off with a warning as passenger must sit at the back.

Pls take note

Note : We intentionally added the HOAX overlay to prevent the images from being further misused.

Car Seating SOP For CMCO / PKPB Lockdown : More Bullshit

This picture originally surfaced in May 2020 when the Malaysian government loosened COVID-19 lockdown measures, allowing two persons per car.

It went viral again in October 2020 when the Malaysian government announced CMCO / PKPB lockdowns of KL, Selangor and Putrajaya, as well as Sabah and Labuan.

However, this is just another Internet hoax, because there is no such “social distancing” car seating SOP, and here are the reasons why…

Reason #1 : There Is No Such SOP

Whether you look into the MCO Phase 4 Federal Gazette from April 2020, or the three CMCO SOPs (Klang Valley | Sabah | Labuan), there is no such car seating SOP.

In the stricter MCO Phase 4, both persons must be family members staying in the same house, or a driver helping to send someone seeking healthcare or medical services.

In the looser October CMCO / PKPB lockdowns, two family members living together may travel in the same car, but there is no such restriction for commercial vehicles – they can fit as many people as they are licensed for.

In all cases, there is no requirement for special seating arrangements.

Reason #2 : The Seating Arrangement Is Pointless

The “social distancing” car seating arrangement is, frankly, pointless because the rules already limit personal vehicle use to members of the same family.

If one member of the family is infected, the rest of the family is far more likely to get infected at home than they would in the car.

It is also pointless in commercial vehicles, because the same workers work together and are in close contact long after they leave their vehicles.

That’s why you are not required to wear a face mask in private vehicles. Whether you are travelling with a family member or an office mate, you are already in close contact outside of that vehicle.

Such an arrangement is also pointless in taxis and e-hailing vehicles because everyone – driver and passengers – is required to wear face masks at all times.

Reason #3 : Air Circulates Within The Car

Unless you roll down the car’s windows, its air conditioning system will recirculate air and viral particles from any infected person throughout the cabin.

So it really doesn’t matter if you sit behind the driver, or sit next to the driver or another passenger.

This is why it is so important to wear a face mask, whenever you are in any indoor public space – and this includes sitting in a car or train or plane with strangers.

Reason #4 : People Keep Recreating This Fake Story

For some reason, Malaysians keep recreating the fake story of how they were warned or fined by the police for sitting side by side in their own cars.

They are now sharing police compounds for other offences as evidence that the police are issuing them for sitting side by side in a car.

But one thing rings true – no one actually admits to being the person who actually got fined for the offence. It was always “my friend / colleague / FB pal told me his friend kena“…

Fine For Scratching Nose A Wake-Up Call On AI Surveillance!

The recent case of a Chinese driver getting fine for scratching his face is a funny example of current AI surveillance technology. Yet it is also a wake-up call on the dangers of pervasive AI surveillance by the state.

Fined For Scratching Nose By AI Surveillance System!

A Jinan resident, Mr. Liu, was driving his car in the eastern Shandong province, when he raised his hand to touch his face. Most of us unconsciously do that 2 to 5 times per minute!

Unbeknownst to him, one of the many AI surveillance cameras in the city noticed his action, and issued him a fine of 50 yuan* and 2 demerit points for “driving while holding a phone“.

* Approximately $7.25 / £5.70 / €6.50 / RM 30

The Jinan AI surveillance system also sent him this screenshot of his traffic violation, as captured at 7:20 AM on 20 May 2019.

Just like many automated systems (looking at you, Facebook and Google!), there was no way to dispute the charge. Mr. Liu tried to sort out the situation over the phone, but “no one would help him“.

He only got justice by appealing to the court of public opinion on Sina Weibo, where his post went viral. Only then did the Jinan traffic police department take notice and investigate his complaint.

Two days later, they cancelled his ticket after confirming that he was only touching his face, and not actually using a phone while driving.

AI Surveillance In Chinese Cities

China has been working hard at developing smart cities, as part of their social engineering efforts to quell political dissent and encourage Chinese citizens to “behave properly”.

There are already over 170 million surveillance cameras across China, with a projected 400 million surveillance cameras installed by next year. And they are all controlled by AI surveillance systems.

Such extensive surveillance coverage has allowed the Chinese government to detect crimes and punish their citizens for them. It also feeds the new Social Credit System – a national reputation system that assess the economic and social reputation of every Chinese citizen and business.

However, such pervasive surveillance has led to serious privacy implications for the Chinese citizenry. Anyone who wants to understand the power, allure and dangers of AI surveillance should watch the TV series, Person of Interest.

The Dangers Of AI Surveillance

While AI surveillance technology is now quite incredible, this case has exposed its vulnerabilities and limitations.

  1. Human oversight is still necessary, because AI surveillance is not accurate enough to detect false positives.
  2. It may be tempting to make the AI surveillance system the judge, jury and executioner, but such systems need to implement the principle of “guilty beyond a reasonable doubt“, and that means ignoring anything that is not close to a 99.9% match.
  3. There should be an appeal system in place. It took a viral social media post to alert the Jinan traffic police department to the mistake.
  4. There is also the question of personal data security. Can the government securely store the data, without unsanctioned or illegal access? How long should they store the information before they are deleted?

Alibaba Cloud + The Malaysia City Brain

Alibaba Cloud is one of the chief architects of Chinese smart city initiative and AI surveillance capabilities with their ET City Brain that runs on their Tianchi Platform.

Last year, Alibaba Cloud announced their collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) to introduce the Malaysia City Brain.

The first phase of the Malaysia City Brain will kickstart with 382 AI traffic cameras at 281 traffic light junctions in Kuala Lumpur.

Although the Malaysian government is ostensibly implementing the Malaysia City Brain to “optimise the flow of vehicles and timing of traffic signals“, it is really a short step to the Chinese model of population and crime surveillance.
