WhatsApp Voice Chat : How To Create / Join / Quit It?

Find out how to create, join, or quit the new WhatsApp Voice Chat feature for large groups!

WhatsApp Voice Chat : What Is It?

On 14 November 2023, WhatsApp launched a new Voice Chat feature for large groups of 33 to 256 participants.

Previously, both voice and video calls in groups were limited to 32 participants, so larger groups have to manually choose which users to include under that threshold. That changed with the new Voice Chat feature, which allows larger groups of 33 to 128 participants, albeit still far below the maximum limit of 1,024 members for every WhatsApp group.

Unlike voice calls, group members won’t receive any sound notifications of Voice Chats. Instead, when you start a Voice Chat, group members will see a pop-up window in the chat group. Group members can then choose to join the voice chat, or ignore it.

WhatsApp Voice Chat : How To Create And Stop It?

Please note that WhatsApp Voice Chat is only enabled for large groups with 33 to 256 participants. It will not appear in smaller, or much larger groups.

Here is how you can create a new Voice Chat in your group.

Step 1 : Open the WhatsApp group, in which you wish to start a Voice Chat.

Step 2 : Tap on the Voice Chat option on the upper right corner of the group chat. The icon has a blue audio wavelength symbol.

If you don’t see the Voice Chat icon, that likely means your WhatsApp group is too small (32 or fewer participants), or is much too large (257 or more participants).

Step 3 : A Voice Chat pop-up will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap on Start voice chat to initiate the voice chat for the entire group.

That’s it! All members in that WhatsApp group will now see a notification about a Voice Chat, which they can join or simply ignore.

Once you wish to end the Voice Chat, simply tap on the red X icon on the pop-up.

As you can see, it’s easy to create a new Voice Chat, and to stop it once you are done.

Step 1 : When someone begins a Voice Chat in your group, you will see a “Voice chat” notification in the chat.

Step 2 : Tap on the Voice chat link (which appears like a message) to join it.

Step 3 : When you wish to exit, simply tap on the red X icon on the Voice Chat pop-up.

As you can see, it’s easy to join and quit any Voice Chat in your WhatsApp group.

You can also see how the Voice chat option appears like a message in the group, allowing participants to ignore and continue with their posts, and replies.

If you find this guide useful, please share it with your family and friends!

WhatsApp Voice Chat : Some Important Notes

Please take note of these limitations or possible concerns:

  • Voice chats are only available for groups of 33 to 256 people.
  • This feature is only available on your primary device.
  • Group members not in the voice chat can see the profiles of those in the voice chat from the chat header and the Calls tab.
  • Voice chats will end automatically once everyone has left the chat. They’ll also end if no one joins the first or last person in the chat for 60 minutes.

Did Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max Video Just Leak?!

Did a video of the upcoming Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max just leak?! Take a look at the viral video, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max Video Just Leaked!

People are sharing a video which claims to show “live footage” of an Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max smartphone running on iOS 18 at a Chinese factory!

BreakingTech : An anonymous source has leaked the live footage of iPhone 16 Pro Max with iOS 18 pre build from a Chinese factory

Under panel Camera and Face ID can be seen in the video

Recommended : Did Tesla Cars Catch Fire + Explode After Accident?!

Truth : Leaked Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max Video Is Fake!

This appears to be a fake video using an iPhone 14 Pro Max smartphone, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : It Appears To Be An Upside Down iPhone

Let me start by pointing out the device appears to be an upside down iPhone. You can see the single side button on the left side, where the cluster of two volume control buttons and the ring switch should have been.

Fact #2 : It Is Most Likely The iPhone 14 Pro Max

The device in the video is most likely the iPhone 14 Pro Max because it appears to have thicker 2.2 mm bezels than the 1.5 mm bezels on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The thicker bezels also tells us that this is unlikely to be the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Fact #3 : upsidedowned Lets iPhone Rotate Upside Down

It is likely that the video creator used the upsidedowned tweak to rotate the iPhone 14 Pro Max upside down

If you look at the sample photo, it looks like what was shown in the fake iPhone 16 Pro Max video, doesn’t it?

Fact #4 : Front + FaceID Cameras Cannot Be Seen At All

While some people are claiming that the video shows the under-display front and Face ID cameras, they are not visible at any point in the video.

That’s because the iPhone appears to be recorded upside down. That could explain why the entire device isn’t visible in the video – it would have shown the Dynamic Island at the bottom.

Fact #5 : iPhone Appears To Be Jailbroken

When the video creator swiped down to display the Control Center, the carrier name has an emoji of a bear (is that Pooh the bear???) which tells us that the iPhone was jailbroken.

Fact #6 : Control Center Appears To Be iOS 16

The Control Panel shown on the iPhone in the video appears to be from iOS 16, with horizontal brightness and volume controls. The Control Center was redesigned in iOS 17, and looks quite different – it has horizontal brightness and volume controls, for example.

Fact #7 : iPhone Details Can Be Changed

Just in case you are wondering – you can change your iPhone’s serial numbers and other details, including the iOS version and model name, using HideSerialNumber.

Is It Dangerous To Exit WhatsApp Exit Scam Groups?!

Is it dangerous to exit WhatsApp scam groups? Or quitting such scam groups on WhatsApp cause your phone to be hacked?!

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : It Is Dangerous To Exit WhatsApp Scam Groups!

People are sharing this warning about quitting WhatsApp scam groups using the Exit Group link option! Take a look!

Here’s another Scam chat group. DO NOT CLICK ON ITS EXIT GROUP BUTTON to exit, instead go to your top right 3dots and click on exit group or report.

Clicking on the group’s exit button might have dire consequences..

Recommended : WhatsApp Block Button Scam : What You Need To Know!

Truth : It’s Not Dangerous To Exit WhatsApp Scam Groups!

This viral warning was likely created by well-meaning but clueless Internet “experts” who are apparently not tech-savvy enough to understand what’s going on.

Fact #1 : No Evidence Of WhatsApp Exit Group Hacking

First, let me just point out that there is no evidence that anyone was ever hacked after using the Exit Group link to get out of any WhatsApp group, whether they are scam groups or otherwise.

Even if an enterprising hacker / scammer was able to create a message with a fake Exit Group button that downloads an APK (Android Package Kit) file, it won’t automatically install that file. You will need to manually install the APK file from the Downloads folder.

Those who know how to do that would be tech-savvy enough to avoid installing APK files from unknown sources. Those who don’t know how to do that would not be able to install the downloaded APK file.

Fact #2 : WhatsApp Exit Group Option Is Genuine

The truth is – the Exit Group link that you may see in new messages from strangers is not a scam or a trick. It also does not download or install any APK file.

The Exit Group link is actually a safety feature in WhatsApp, that appears if you have been added to a WhatsApp group by someone who is not in your contact list – like a scammer, for example.

Once you open the new group you have been added to, WhatsApp warns you that you were added by someone who isn’t a contact. You are then given the option to exit the group, or click OK to continue.

There is really nothing malicious about this Exit group link in WhatsApp. Clicking on it to exit any WhatsApp group won’t harm you in any way, or cause your phone to be hacked.

Recommended : Can Israel Seismic Wave Card Hack Your Phone?!

Fact #3 : Older Exit Group Methods Still Work

The WhatsApp Exit group link offers an easy way to quickly remove yourself from a group you don’t want to be in. However, the older exit group methods still work, in case you prefer to use them:

Exit Group Only

  1. Go into the group chat you wish to leave.
  2. Tap on the kebab menu / vertical ellipsis (⋮) icon on the upper right corner.
  3. Select MoreExit group.

An even better option is to actually report the scam group, while quitting it and removing the chat at the same time.

Report + Exit Group Only

  1. Go into the group chat you wish to leave.
  2. Tap on the kebab menu / vertical ellipsis (⋮) icon on the upper right corner.
  3. Select More > Report
  4. Make sure the Exit group and delete chat option is checked.
  5. Tap Report to report and quit from the group, and delete the chat.

Fact #4 : WhatsApp + Telegram Scam Groups Are Real

Before I leave, I just want to remind all of you that there are many scam groups on WhatsApp and Telegram.

If you are added to any of these scam groups, just exit them without a thought. Do not read anything posted in these scam groups, lest you fall for the scam!

That’s why scammers often try to convince you to check out the group first, and “don’t rush to leave the group”:

Hello everyone! Please don’t rush to leave the group, thank you all for taking the time to read this message!

Ignore whatever they post in those scam groups. Hit the Exit group link, or better still – REPORT the group to WhatsApp / Telegram!

WhatsApp Block Button Scam : What You Need To Know!

Will clicking on the WhatsApp block button install a malicious app that will hack your phone?!

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Don’t press the “Block” button within the message because when you press on it then, you are effectively downloading this Malicious App. Instead go to WhatsApp setting (3 dots on the right hand top) and block the message.

Truth : WhatsApp Block Button Is New Feature!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp and social media platforms, and here are reasons why…

Fact #1 : No Evidence Of WhatsApp Block Button Scam

First, let me just point out that there is no evidence that anyone was scammed by the WhatsApp block button in messages.

Even if an enterprising hacker / scammer was able to create a message with a fake block button that downloads an APK (Android Package Kit) file, it won’t automatically install that file. You will need to manually install the APK file from the Downloads folder.

Those who know how to do that would be tech-savvy enough to avoid installing APK files from unknown sources. Those who don’t know how to do that would not be able to install the downloaded APK file.

Fact #2 : WhatsApp Block Button Is Part Of New Safety Tools

The truth is – the Block button that you may see in new messages from strangers is not a scam. It also does not download or install any APK file.

The Block button is actually part of the new Safety Tools feature that WhatsApp started introducing in July 2023.

The Safety Tools feature will only appear when you receive a message from an unknown number. You will be given some details about the safety of this new contact – whether you are in common groups, and in some cases – the country of origin.

You are given the option of either blocking this new contact, or adding it to your Contact list. You can also click on the Safety tools link for more details.

Recommended : Can Israel Seismic Wave Card Hack Your Phone?!

Fact #3 : Older Blocking Method Still Exists

The new WhatsApp Safety Tools offer an easy way to quickly block and remove obvious spammers and scammers. However, it may not be readily apparent whether the new contact is genuine, or just a spammer / scammer.

If you start messaging with this new contact – to find out if their identity / purpose, the Safety Tools option will disappear. But don’t worry – you can still block this new contact if you realise that he/she is a spammer / scammer.

  1. Go to the messaging screen for the person you want to block.
  2. Tap on the kebab menu / vertical ellipsis (⋮) icon on the upper right corner.
  3. Select More > Block.
You can also select More > Report (to report block the scammer)

Alternatively, you can block multiple contacts using this method:

  1. Open WhatsApp, and go to the Chats screen.
  2. Tap on the kebab menu / vertical ellipsis (⋮) icon on the upper right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Tap on the Privacy option.
  5. Scroll down and tap on Blocked contacts.
  6. Tap on the Add Contacts () icon at the upper right corner.
  7. Search for the contacts you want to remove, and select them.

Now, blocking people does not remove your contact details or profile photo from their phones and devices.

However, they will no longer be able to call you, or send you messages. They will also not be able to see changes to your status updates including when you’re online / last seen, or changes you make to your profile photo.

Apple Quietly Releasing New iPad Models In October 2023?!

Is Apple about to quietly release new iPad models in October 2023?! Take a look at the new rumours!

Claim : Apple Is Releasing New iPad Models In October 2023!

The Internet is abuzz with rumours that Apple is about to quietly release new iPad models this week, in October 2023!

It started with a report by SuperCharged that “sources familiar with Apple’s media plans” told them that Apple will announce new iPad models “as soon as Tuesday, October 17”, and the new iPads will have these improvements:

  • iPad Air : upgraded with M2 chip, up from M1
  • iPad mini : upgraded with A16 Bionic chip
  • entry-level iPad : unknown, possibly A16 Bionic chip

Apple will announce updates to its iPad lineup this week, according to sources familiar with Apple’s media plans who spoke to Supercharged. Apple is planning briefings with select media personnel scheduled for later this week specifically focused on the iPad.

The sources added that the announcements could happen as soon as Tuesday, October 17.

The updates will feature minor spec bumps, bringing the models in line with faster and more efficient chips. The iPad Air will gain the M2 chip, an upgrade from the current M1 chip, while the upcoming iPad mini will feature the A16 Bionic chip.

The announcements will take place on Apple’s website and its YouTube channel and will not include a flashy hybrid event for significant product announcements.

This report was later corroborated by 9to5Mac, who spoke to their own sources:

Via Supercharged, Apple is set to announce new iPad updates this week, likely on Tuesday October 17. 9to5Mac has corroborated the report with our own sources.

The iPad Air, iPad mini and the base model iPad are expected to be refreshed. These updates will likely comprise smaller spec bump updates rather than significant design changes.

Recommended : Steve Jobs : What His Last Words Really Were!

Doubts Apple Is Releasing New iPad Models In October 2023!

While that seems exciting news – finally we get updated iPads! – there are already doubts circulating around these rumours.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, for example, is well-connected and quickly casted doubts on these rumours:

More often than not, the company debuts new laptops and iPads in October — about a month after the latest iPhone and watch get out the door.

And while I reported in July that Apple was planning such a release this year, the latest indications are that it won’t happen this month.

A new entry-level iPad, iPad Air and iPad mini are all in development with faster chips, but I don’t believe updates of any significance are imminent

Apple supply chain analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, also said last month that “new iPad models are unlikely before the year’s end“.

Recommended : How To Link Multiple Phones On WhatsApp!

Now, I’m no Mark Gurman or Ming-Chi Kuo, and Tech ARP is no 9to5Mac or SuperCharged, but I did break the news on Apple’s new MagSafe connector and the SD card reader’s return in the 2021 MacBook Pro.

I actually heard from a source a couple of weeks earlier that Apple will not release any new entry-level iPad models this year. Rather, the new entry-level iPad is slated to debut in April 2024.

This, of course, only addresses the entry-level iPad models. It is possible that Apple will announce updated iPad Air and iPad mini models this week, while leaving the entry-level iPad for April 2024.

However, my money is on Apple not releasing any new iPad models this year, and my source is correct about the April 2024 date. In fact, I literally bet my own money on my source’s information, by purchasing an iPad yesterday for my parents.

In any case, I don’t think Apple will wow anyone with the new entry-level iPad model. It’s all about incremental changes these days. In fact, Apple has already been shifting away from a yearly update cycle, as it gets harder to deliver any exciting updates for these tablets.

On top of that, the entry-level iPad was completely redesigned just a year ago – in October 2022. Most likely, the new entry-level iPad will feature the A16 Bionic chip, with maybe a new colour or two. Is that exciting? I don’t think so.

The truth is – even the 7th Generation iPad that I currently own is fast enough for most people. I personally don’t see a real need to upgrade to the 11th Generation iPad when it arrives, whether it’s this week, or in April 2024.

So yes, I think Apple will quietly update its iPad line-up through a simple and cheap press release and YouTube announcement. I just don’t think it’s this week, or even this year.

Mexico Did It Photo : Can It Infect Your Phone With Virus?!

Can the “Mexico Did It” photo infect your phone with a virus in just 5 seconds?!

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Updated @ 2023-09-13 : Revised for a new wave
Originally posted @ 2022-11-07

Claim : “Mexico Did It” Photo Will Infect Your Phone With A Virus!

The warning about the “Mexico Did It” photo or image that will infect your phone with a virus keeps going… viral on WhatsApp and social media.

There are two versions so far – in English, and in Spanish.

FYI: They are going to publish an image that shows how Covid 19 is cured in Mexico and it is called “Mexico did it”, do not open it because it enters the phone in 5 seconds and it cannot be stopped in any way. It’s a virus. Pass it on to your friends and family. Now they also said it on CNN and BBC. DO NOT OPEN IT

Pass it on

Truth : There Is No “Mexico Did It” Photo / Virus!

This is just another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp and social media like Facebook and Twitter, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : This Viral Message Has Been Circulating Since 2021

The viral message about the “Mexico Did It” photo or virus has been circulating on Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter since April 2021.

Fact #2 : This Is A Modified Version Of “Argentina Is Doing It”

This viral message is actually a modified version of an earlier fake message, which claims that a video on WhatsApp called “Argentina is doing it” will hack your phone in 10 seconds.

It just replaces Argentina with Mexico, a video with a photo, and changes it from a 10-second hack into a 5-second virus attack.

Those two fake news are, in turn, probably based on the even older fake claim that hackers are using greeting photos and videos to hack your phone.

Read more : Can Greeting Photos + Videos Hack Your Phone?!

Fact #3 : There Is No “Mexico Did It” Photo / Virus

There is no such thing as a “Mexico Did It” image or photo. Neither is there a virus called “Mexico Did It“.

There is also no known virus that can infect your phone with a virus simply using a photo or image.

Fact #4 : CNN + BBC Never Reported On Such A virus

It’s been over 2.5 years since this fake story first appeared on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, but neither CNN nor BBC has ever reported on a “Mexico Did It” virus.

Fact #5 : Image-Based Malware Is Possible, But…

Digital steganography is a method by which secret messages and other data can be hidden in digital files, like a photo or a video, or even a music file.

It is also possible to embed malicious code within a photo, but it won’t be a full-fledged malware that can execute by itself.

At most, it can be used to hide the malware payload from antivirus scanners, which is pretty clever to be honest… but it cannot hack your smartphone by itself.

Recommended : Can Restaurant Menu QR Code Hack Your Phone?!

Fact #6 : Image-Based Malware Requires User Action

In January 2019, cybercriminals created an online advertisement with a script that appears innocuous and would pass any malware check.

However, the image itself has an “almost white” rectangle that is recognised by the script, triggering it to redirect the user to the cybercriminals’ website. Once there, the victim is tricked into installing a Trojan disguised as an Adobe Flash Player update.

Such a clever way to bypass malware checks, but even so, this image-based malware requires user action.

You cannot get infected by the Trojan if you practice good “Internet hygiene” by not downloading or installing anything from unknown websites.

Fact #7 : Malicious Code Executes Immediately

If you accidentally download and trigger malware, it will execute immediately. It won’t take 5 seconds, as the hoax message claims.

Generally, malware won’t wait a few seconds before it infects your devices. Waiting will only increase the risk of detection.

Unless the malware creator designed it to only infect your phone when you are sleeping (like the early hours of the morning), it pays to execute immediately.

WhatsApp envisions this as a way for people to share personal moments or events, like wishing someone happy birthday, or sharing good news with family and friends.

Think of Instant Video Messages as the video version of the Voice Message feature many people have been using for years to send short voice messages.

All WhatsApp Instant Video Messages are protected with end-to-end encryption to ensure that they can only be viewed by people you send them to.

First, it is important to know that APK files are not used to deliver wedding invitations, or photos and videos.

Short for Android Package Kit, an APK file is used to install software in Android devices. Think of it as the Android equivalent of an EXE installation file for Windows software.

Fact #2 : You Should Never Install APK File, Unless You’re An Expert

APK files, by definition, are merely installation files for Android devices. They can be used for legitimate purposes, as well as nefarious purposes.

However, legitimate Android apps are mostly delivered through proper mobile app platforms like Google Play Store and the HUAWEI App Gallery, where they are often scanned for malware before people are allowed to download and install.

Therefore, you should never download and install an APK file outside of legitimate mobile app platforms, unless you are an expert who needs to “sideload” an APK for a specific reason.

Now, this does not mean that only Android devices are vulnerable. Apple is slated to offer the ability to sideload apps too with iOS 17.

Fact #3 : Scammers Use APK Files To Install Malware

In most, if not all, cases where you receive an APK file from a stranger on WhatsApp, Telegram, through email or social media platforms, it is likely to contain malware.

Scammers use APK files containing malware to gain access to your phone. After you install these malware APK files, scammers can do anything – read your messages, steal your photos and videos, gain access to your TAC / OTP alerts, etc.

Recommended : Can SIM Swap empty bank accounts without warning?!

Fact #4 : APK File Scam Not Limited To Wedding Invitations

These mobile application scams are not just limited to wedding invitations, or offers to deliver illicit photos and videos. Scammers have also convinced their victims to install these APK malware files to :

  • book cheap temporary maid / cleaning services
  • book cheap air-conditioning services
  • book exclusive restaurants
  • receive special discounts
  • make investment transactions

Fact #5 : Scammers Use Social Engineering + Stolen Data

It is important to remember that scammers will use a combination of social engineering and stolen / purchased data to convince you to install their APK malware.

They may know your name, your MyKad number, your address and your telephone number. They may even know who is in your family, and even have your bank account or credit card details. All that information can be purchased from unscrupulous sources.

In some cases, scammers have taken over social media accounts and used them to trick the account holder’s family and friends into installing such APK malware files.

No matter who tells you to do it – even if they are your family member or friend, NEVER download and install an APK file.

Fact #6 : Bank Negara Malaysia Warned About Mobile App Scam

Bank Negara Malaysia has long warned consumers about such mobile application scams.

Be wary of clickable hyperlinks that redirects you to a site, or downloads an application to your phone. Banks will no longer send you any clickable hyperlinks via SMS!

Only download applications from your smartphone’s official application platforms (e.g. Google Play Store, [Apple] App Store, Huawei App Gallery).

Fact #7 : PDRM Confirmed This Is A Scam

On Monday, 19 June 2023, PDRM Commercial Crimes Investigation Department (CCID) Director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf warned the public about this wedding invitation scam:

This new tactic asks for an individual to open the link prepared to receive the wedding invitation. However, that’s the trick to steal information from the public and to make online transfer. The public are advised to avoid getting caught up in any message from questionable sources.

You Can Now Edit Your WhatsApp Messages!

On Monday, May 22, 2023, Mark Zuckerberg announced that you will now be able to edit your WhatsApp messages up to 15 minutes after they’re sent!

This is, arguably, one of the most requested features to be added to WhatsApp, since many of us suffer from “fat fingers syndrome”, while others are forced to suffer through our typos!

Before this feature was introduced, the only way to “fix” a typo, was to post the corrected message, and delete the previous message with the typo(s). The only problem is you end up with a ton of “message deleted” remnants.

Here is how you can edit your WhatsApp messages:

  1. Long-press on a sent message, and a menu will drop down.
  2. Select the Edit option from the drop-down menu.
  3. After editing your message, simply press Enter to save the edit.

Do note that the edited message will display “Edited” next to it, so your recipients know that it has been edited.

Also, this Edit option is limited to 15 minutes after you send a WhatsApp message. You cannot edit a message if you wait longer than 15 minutes after sending that message!

You Can Edit Your WhatsApp Messages… In Coming Weeks!

You can give it a try, but this feature likely isn’t available yet in your WhatsApp. Mark Zuckerberg and WhatsApp was just announcing a new feature.

You will have the ability to edit your WhatsApp messages for 15 minutes in coming weeks, as the update is rolled out globally.

For the moments when you make a mistake, or simply change your mind, you can now edit your sent messages.

From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to bring you more control over your chats. All you need to do is long-press on a sent message and choose ‘Edit’ from the menu for up to fifteen minutes after.

Edited messages will display ‘edited’ alongside them, so those you’re messaging are aware of the correction without showing edit history. As with all personal messages, media and calls, your messages and the edits you make are protected by end-to-end encryption.

This feature has started rolling out to users globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.

Can Approve New Participant block WhatsApp hackers?!

Can the new Approve New Participant feature in WhatsApp block hackers?!

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : Turn On WhatsApp Approve New Participant To Block Hackers!

WhatsApp started introducing a new feature called Approve New Participant, on 11 March 2023.

This new feature was only available to WhatsApp Group administrators, and went pretty much unnoticed by most WhatsApp users, until this claim went viral on WhatsApp and social media platforms:

CYBER SECURITY ALERT
Announcement

Let’s look sharp all admins*
WhatsApp has added a new security feature to prevent hackers from joining Groups.
I Hope Admins will take advantage of this feature.

*Admins* should go to group settings and
‘TURN ON’ Approve New Participant.

This will prevent unauthorized access for hackers.

WHATSAPP ADMINS ALERT!!!

That WhatsApp cybersecurity alert was unsigned, so we have no idea who created it. But once it went viral, WhatsApp users started asking their group administrator to turn it on to block hackers.

But does the new Approve New Participant feature really block hackers from attacking WhatsApp groups?

Truth : WhatsApp Approve New Participant Does Not Block Hackers!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp, and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : Approve New Participant Is Not A Cybersecurity Feature

First, let me just point out that Approve New Participant is not a cybersecurity feature. WhatsApp introduced the this feature to help group administrators “grow, moderate, and protect their groups“.

The Approve New Participants setting empowers admins to help grow, moderate, and protect their groups. Turning on the setting in Group Settings requires the admin to review every request to join the group before a participant is allowed to join. This feature enhances privacy and security for all participants in the group.

This feature is designed to protect private groups by preventing people from simply joining them using an invite link.

This is a major security concern for private groups, as it exposes the group chats to people who may not be authorised to view them. However, this is not a concern for open groups, as they are open to one and all.

Fact #2 : Approve New Participant Cannot Block Hackers

When a group turns on Approve New Participant, admin approval is required to join a group. People who attempt to join the group will see a Request to join button, with the message “An admin must approve your request”.

After clicking on Request to join, those who wish to join the group are allowed to share their Reason for the request, or Cancel Request.

Once the group administrators get the request, they can either approve or reject the request. Group administrators can also start a chat with the person to request more information.

All that is great for vetting people who want to join an exclusive WhatsApp group, but this new feature does not block hackers, as the group administrator will not know who is, or is not a hacker. It’s not like those WhatsApp accounts have a “hacker” or “not a hacker” label!

Hackers can use social engineering techniques to trick the group administrators into approving their requests, or they can simply use phishing attacks to take over the WhatsApp accounts of existing group participants!

Recommended : Must You Disable Facebook Auto-Fill To Block Scams?!

Fact #3 : Approve New Participant Is Disabled By Default

Cybersecurity features that are designed to block hackers will always be enabled by default – why would they be optional?

Yet, the new Approve New Participant feature is OPTIONAL in WhatsApp, and is DISABLED by default. That is because this is not a cybersecurity feature designed to block hackers.

Many WhatsApp groups are open for anyone to join, and turning on Approve New Participant would be pointless as group administrators would not know the identity of the people joining their groups.

This is why it is up to the WhatsApp group administrators to determine if it is suitable for them to use the new Approve New Participant feature, or not.

Private groups will want to turn this on, to vet people who request to join. But open groups will want this feature disabled, or their administrators will be overwhelmed with joining requests.

Fact #4 : Group Participants Can Always Be Removed

Here’s another reason why blocking new participants joining automatically does not block hackers – group participants can always be removed.

Let’s say a hacker, or an unauthorised person, gains access to your WhatsApp group. It doesn’t mean he/she can stay in your group forever. Any group administrator can remove that person.

This new feature only helps group administrators pre-vet people who want to join their group, instead of kicking them out after they have already joined.

Scam Alert : Watch Out For Telegram Phishing Attack!

Watch out for the phishing attack that will allow scammers to take over your Telegram account!

Scam Alert : Watch Out For Telegram Phishing Attack!

Scammers are now targeting Telegram users with a phishing attack that is designed to trick them into giving up their accounts! The Telegram phishing attack works like this:

Step 1 : The scammer gains control of your friend’s Telegram account, and sends this message to you:

Dear Telegram users. The system detects that this account is abnormal and has potential security risks.

To ensure that you can log in to your account normally, you need to invite friends for auxiliary verification

The risk control account has not been verified. The system will cancel the account after 24 hours!

Personal Information Authentication:[link removed]

Step 2 : The scammer, masquerading as your friend, asks you to help him/her verify his/her Telegram account by clicking on the link.

There are security risks in my account, and I need friends to help me verify it. Please click on the official link to help me verify it and follow the prompts. thank you

Step 3 : If you click on the [removed] link to help your friend, you will be taken to a website that looks like an official Telegram website. DO NOT DO THIS.

Step 4 : You will be asked to log into your Telegram account on the fake website. DO NOT DO THIS.

Step 5 : The fake Telegram website will ask you to key in your Login code, or take and upload a screenshot of your Telegram. DO NOT DO THIS.

Step 6 : If you continue, the scammer will be able to take over your Telegram account, and use it to scam your friends by asking them for money, etc.

The scammer will also have access to your Telegram chats, and all associated media including photos and videos, which could potentially be leaked or used to extort you or other people.

How To Protect Against Telegram Phishing Attack

A phishing (pronounced as fishing) attack is a social engineering attack, that uses your trust for an institution (like a bank), authority (Telegram), or someone you know, to give up your login details.

Here are some ways you can protect yourself against any phishing attack on Telegram, or other platforms.

Verify Identity Before Trusting

Many people fall for phishing attacks because it is human nature to trust your friends and to help them. However, on instant messaging apps, you don’t actually know if it’s really your friend on the other end!

So if a friend messages you on Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc to ask for help, ALWAYS verify their identity before proceeding.

If possible, call or message your friend on the phone, or via a different platform (use WhatsApp if the request came on Telegram, for example).

But if you are unable to call your friend, try asking the other person something that only your real friend would know:

  • Do NOT ask questions like “Are you really Sarah??
  • Do NOT ask questions that can be answered by reading previous chat messages.
  • Ask something that only you and your friend would know, like “Hey Sarah, what was that restaurant we went to last week?
  • Ask a fake question that your friend would readily know is not true, like “Hey Sarah, are you coming over tonight?

If the other person cannot answer or gives you the wrong answer, he/she is not your friend, and that account has likely been taken over by a scammer.

Look At The Link

Whenever you see a link being shared, always check if it leads to a legitimate website, or attempts to masquerade as a real website, by substituting characters in the link.

This Telegram phishing attack, for example, uses a link to telegram.0rg.ee. The real Telegram domain name is telegram.org. This is called domain spoofing.

If you see an attempt to impersonate a legitimate website by using a similar-looking domain name, do NOT click on it.

Never Login Via A Link

It is common for people to share links on Telegram, and in Telegram groups. Heck, we share links to our article in the Tech ARP Telegram group!

Clicking on links in Telegram, WhatsApp, emails, etc. is not dangerous, because most lead to legitimate websites that do NOT require you to log in.

What is dangerous is logging into any website through a link. I cannot hammer this enough – NEVER LOG INTO ANY WEBSITE through a link!

Phishing attacks work by tricking you into going into a fake website that looks like the real website. But you still have to log into the fake website to give the scammers your login details.

If you click on a link, and you are asked to login – this is likely a phishing attack. But don’t worry – as long as you refuse to log into any website after clicking on a link, the phishing attack fails.

Turn On Two-Step Verification

All banking platforms, and many mobile apps now offer two-step verification to prevent scammers from taking over user accounts. However, this is often an optional feature that you must manually enable.

Telegram has a two-step verification feature, which prevents scammers and hackers from hijacking your account by requiring a secret password that only you will know.

Please follow our guide on how to turn on Two-Step Verification in Telegram.

Just make sure you do NOT give that password out to anyone, or key it into any website!

Read more : How To Turn On Two-Step Verification In Telegram!

Warn Your Family + Friends!

It is important to publicise phishing attacks, whenever they happen. If people are alerted, they are less likely to fall for such attacks.

However, scammers and hackers can quickly change the way their phishing attack works, so it is important that people understand how phishing attacks work in general.

You can help prevent phishing attacks by sharing this articles, and other cybersecurity warnings, with your family and friends.

Will Your Phone Get Hacked While You Vote In GE15?!

Will your phone get hacked while you are voting in GE15?!

Take a look at the viral claim, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : Your Phone Will Get Hacked While You Vote In GE15!

This warning has gone viral on WhatsApp and social media, claiming that your phone will get hacked while you are voting in GE15!

The post is long, so feel free to skip to the next section for the facts!

For first time voters, it might be tempting to bring your phone along with you to document and record your experience voting for the first time.

However, the Election Commission (EC) has announced that the use of mobile phones inside polling stations will not be allowed.

As such, you may use your phone to kill time while standing in line, but you’d have to surrender your phone once you collect your ballot paper.

Read more : New SPR Rules On Bringing + Using Phone On GE15!

Truth : Your Phone Won’t Get Hacked While You Vote In GE15!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS circulating on WhatsApp and social media, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : Phones Are Left On KTM Table In Individual Boxes

First, let us establish some basic facts about how phones are “surrendered” before voting in GE15:

  1. Each polling station (Saluran) will have two voting booths, allowing two voters to mark their ballots at the same time.
  2. The KTM (Ketua Tempat Mengundi – Head of Polling Station) will have two cardboard boxes – one for each phone.
  3. On the way to the voting booth, each voter will place his/her phone into one of the two cardboard boxes on the KTM’s table.
  4. After casting the ballots, the voter will retrieve his/her phone from the cardboard box.

The polling clerks and the head of the polling station (KTM) will NOT touch any phone. Voters must place and retrieve their phones by themselves.

Fact #2 : There Are Many Witnesses In Each Polling Station

Each polling station has at least one police officer, three polling clerks and a KTM (Head of the Polling Station), as well as two or more observers.

That’s seven or more people arranged along three sides of the room, which means the phones placed on the KTM’s table are visible to all of them. Any attempt by anyone but the voters to handle the phones would be instantly noticed.

Read more : New SPR Rules On Bringing + Using Phone On GE15!

Fact #3 : KTM Is Usually A Teacher Working In That School

In Malaysian elections, schools are generally used as voting centres, with classrooms converted into polling stations.

Usually, the Malaysia Election Commission (SPR) appoints teachers of the same school as the KTM – head of each polling station.

While this does not mean some of these teachers are not secretly awesome hackers in their spare time, it means that your phones are generally being watched by teachers.

If you can trust school teachers with your kids, you can certainly trust them to WATCH OVER your precious phone.

Fact #4 : Marking Your Ballots Take Less Than A Minute

The only time your phone is out of your view is when you are marking your ballots in the voting booth.

How long do you reckon it takes to mark X on one or two ballots, and fold them? Maybe 10 seconds? 20 seconds if you are slow. No matter what – your mobile phone will only be out of sight for less than a minute.

Do you actually believe any hacker would have the time to hook up your phone to any cable, never mind hack it, in less than one minute?

Fact #5 : Juice Jacking Requires Cable To Be Plugged Into Phone

What this “ethical hacker” is referring to is called juice jacking. Juice jacking requires a cable to be plugged into your phone. It cannot happen wirelessly, because it relies on USB vulnerabilities.

As noted in Fact #1, you will place your phone into a large cardboard box. You will be able to see that there are no cables present.

While you are marking your vote, the box containing your phone will be fully visible to at least six other people in the room, if you discount the “nefarious KTM who is secretly an evil hacker”.

Even a “nefarious KTM who is secretly an evil hacker” will have trouble taking your phone out of the box, without any of the other people in the room noticing, never mind actually plugging in a cable.

That’s why the real risk of juice jacking isn’t that 20-30 seconds you spend voting in GE15, but when you plug your phone into a free USB power socket.

If you are paranoid, just cover your phone’s USB or Lightning port with tape, before you place it in the designated box.

Fact #6 : Juice Jacking Vulnerabilities Have Been Mitigated

As ethical hackers reveal security risks like juice jacking, Google and Apple have taken measures to mitigate the risks.

Both Android and iOS, for example, no longer allow the phone to be mounted as a drive when plugged in over USB. You will get a prompt asking you to confirm the step, which is not possible for the hacker to do without first unlocking the phone.

There have also been many Android and iOS security updates that patch vulnerabilities that could potentially lead to juice jacking attacks. That’s why it’s so important to keep your phone operating system updated.

Please WATCH OUT about such FAKE NEWS on WhatsApp and social media.

Remember – democracy does not guarantee us a good government. Democracy only guarantees us the right to vote out a bad government!

Happy voting on 19 November 2022!

Beware Of Telegram Screenshot Hack + Scam!

Watch out for the Telegram screenshot hack and scam! Find out how the Telegram screenshot hack and scam works, and what you can do!

Telegram Screenshot Hack : New Twist To Old Trick

My friend just got hit by the Telegram screenshot hack, and the hacker is now trying to scam everyone on his contact list!

The Telegram screenshot hack is a new twist to an old trick, and here is how they do it…

Step 1 : Identify A Suitable Target

After obtaining a legitimate Telegram account through phishing or other means, the hacker reads through the messages to identify a suitable target – usually a close friend whom you often chat with, and trust.

For the purpose of our example, the hacker stole your friend’s Telegram account and has identified you as a suitable target.

Step 2 : Attempt To Login From Another Device

The hacker installs Telegram in another device and attempts to log into your account. He only needs the your phone number to do that.

The login attempt triggers Telegram to send a Login code to the your registered devices to authenticate the login. Usually, that’s the Telegram app in your smartphone.

Step 3 : Ask For A Screenshot Of Telegram

Traditionally, this is when the hacker will use your friend’s Telegram account to message you and ask for that Login code. However, asking for the Login code may trigger suspicion, so hackers have now come up with a new twist.

Instead of asking you for the Login code, the hacker will use your friend’s Telegram account to ask you to take a screenshot of your Telegram app and send it to him.

What harm is there? After all, many of us take screenshots and share them with family, friends and even on social media!

The problem is – the screenshot will accidentally reveal your Telegram Login code! Take a look at the actual screenshot my friend sent – it clearly shows the Telegram Login code!

Step 4 : Terminate All Other Sessions

The hacker will immediately use the Login code to log into your Telegram account on his device.

Then he will terminate all other sessions from that Telegram account, which means you get logged out from your Telegram app on your own smartphone!

Step 5 : Change Password

To prevent you from logging back in, and terminating his Telegram session, he will change the password.

Step 6 : Scam Your Friends

Now that the hacker gained control of your Telegram account and locked you out of it, he is free to scam your friends.

In this case, my friend’s contacts all started getting pleas to borrow money for some kind of emergency. The hacker will, of course, promise to pay you back quickly.

Your unsuspecting friends may not realise that this is not you that they are talking to, and may end up sending the hacker money.

In this case though, my friend managed to quickly alert us via WhatsApp that his Telegram account was hacked, so we didn’t tall for the scam.

One of his friends toyed with the scammer, and obtained the bank details. That is obviously not my friend’s name or account number!

Telegram Screenshot Hack : How To Prevent It?

Now that you know how the Telegram screenshot hack works, you can pretty much figure out how to prevent it.

Here is my quick summary for those who didn’t go through the whole process above :

  1. Do NOT send anyone your Telegram Login code. Not even anyone claiming to be working for Telegram.
  2. Do NOT send anyone a screenshot of your Telegram app. Even if it’s not a scam, it reveals portions of your chats!
  3. Turn on Two-Step Verification in Telegram. This lets you recover your account, even if you accidentally let someone take over your account.

Read more : How To Turn On Two-Step Verification In Telegram!

Telegram Screenshot Hack : How To Recover Your Account?

If you failed to turn on two-step verification, there is still a way to recover your Telegram account after it is stolen by a hacker.

For these steps to work though, you need to have access to your phone number. You must also do this quickly, as the hacker will be alerted to your attempt.

Step 1 : Open Telegram.

Step 2 : Log into your Telegram account using your phone number.

Step 3 : You will be asked if you have the correct number. Click Yes.

Step 4 : Telegram will send a 5-digit code to all your devices with Telegram installed. You won’t receive it since the hacker has already terminated all other sessions.

Step 5 : Click on the option just above the keypad – “Send the code as an SMS“.

Step 6 : You will now receive an SMS with the 5-digit code. Key it in, and you will now have access to your Telegram account.

Step 7 : Go to Options > Settings > Privacy and Security.

Step 8 : Scroll down and tap on Devices.

Step 9 : Tap on the option – Terminate All Other Session – to boot out the hacker.

Bonus Step : Turn on Two-Step Verification to prevent this from happening again!

Apple Pay Setup Guide : How To Register Your Cards!

Now that Apple Pay is available in Malaysia, here is my guide on how to set it up with your debit / credit card!

Apple Pay Is Now Available In Malaysia!

Apple Pay was first launched way back in September 2014, together with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. However, its global availability was slow and some would say, tortuous.

For years, Apple fans in Malaysia have requested for Apple Pay to be introduced in Malaysia, and could only look at Singapore in envy, when Apple Pay was introduced there more than six years ago in April 2016!

But the wait is over! The steady drip of leaks has finally culminated in actual confirmation that yes, Apple Pay is now available in Malaysia!

While this guide is based on credit cards in Malaysia, it will work in other countries too, as long as Apple Pay is supported.

Not All Banks Support Apple Pay

First of all, you must understand that not all banks support Apple Pay. Here in Malaysia, only three banks support Apple Pay at the moment.

Banks In Malaysia That Support Apple Pay

You will be able to register debit and credit cards issued by these banks :

  • AmBank
  • Maybank
  • Standard Chartered Bank

Banks In Malaysia That Do Not Support Apple Pay

You won’t be able to add debit or credit cards from these banks :

  • CIMB
  • Citibank
  • UOB
  • OCBC

I will update this article as and when I find out what other banks in Malaysia support, or don’t support, Apple Pay.

How To Register Your Card In Apple Pay

To help you register your debit / credit card with Apple Pay, here is my step-by-step guide :

Step 1 : Open the Wallet app in your iPhone.

Step 2 : Tap on the Add button to “Add a credit or debit card to get started using Apple Pay”.

Step 3 : In the next screen, tap on the Continue button.

Step 4 : You will now be asked to “scan” your debit / credit card using your iPhone camera, positioning it within the frame.

Step 5 : The Wallet app will try to pick up important details of your credit card like :

  • Name
  • Credit card number
  • Expiry date

If nothing happens, that means it cannot read the details off the card. Then you will need to tap on the Enter Card Details Manually option at the bottom.

Step 6 : Whether your card details are detected or not, verify the key card details required by Apple Pay :

  • Name
  • Card Number
  • Expiry Date
  • Security Code

If the detected details are wrong, edit them to make sure they match your debit / credit card.

Step 7 : You will need to key in the Security Code, which is a 3-digit or 4-digit CSC (Card Security Code) / CVV (Card Verification Value) / CVC (Card Verification Code) usually printed on the back of your debit / credit card.

Step 8 : If your credit card is not supported, you will get a pop-up message saying :

Your Issuer Does Not Yet Offer Support for This Card

Ask your issuer if they offer cards that support Apple Pay.

If your card is supported, you will see a list of Terms and Conditions. You will need to tap on Agree to continue.

Step 9 : The screen show details of your credit card while the Wallet app sets it up for Apple Pay. Just wait for a few seconds.

Step 10 : You will now be asked to verify your card for Apple Pay, usually through Text Message. Tap Next to continue with the verification process.

Step 11 : You will receive an SMS with a 6-digit One Time Password (OTP). You need to key that in within 2 minutes :

Card enrolment OTP for your digital wallet is XXXXXX. It will expire after 2 mins. If you have not performed this, please contact the bank.

Step 12 : Tap Next after keying in the OTP, and you should see the Card Activated notice.

That’s it! Your credit card is now ready for Apple Pay. When you open your Wallet, you should see that debit / credit card listed.

Touch ‘n Go eWallet Is Now Back On Apple App Store!

The Touch ‘n Go eWallet app was quietly restored to the Apple App Store, as quietly as it was removed earlier!

Here is what we know so far…

Touch ‘n Go eWallet Is Now Back On Apple App Store!

Apple quietly removed the Touch ‘n Go eWallet (TNG eWallet) from the App Store in the first week of May 2022.

The TNG eWallet download page earlier stated “App Not Available – The app is currently not available in your country or region“.

It was also removed from the App Store search listing. The Boost eWallet now appears, instead of the TNG eWallet.

Even though the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app is no longer available in the Apple App Store, you can continue to use it if you had already installed it earlier.

The TNG Digital team stated that they are working to resolve the issue with Apple, and confirmed that the app that is installed in your iPhone will continue to work with all features fully-functioning.

Fortunately, the Touch ‘n Go eWallet (TNG eWallet) app was quietly restored to the Apple App Store on 11 May 2022.

Was Touch ‘n Go eWallet NFC Feature Removed For Apple Users?

Neither Apple nor Touch ‘n Go eWallet stated why the TNG eWallet app was removed from the App Store.

At that time, believed Apple removed it because of the recently-added NFC top-up feature for physical Touch ‘n Go cards.

That’s because Apple Pay is the only mobile wallet / eWallet allowed to use the iPhone and iPad’s NFC capabilities  for contactless payments.

That limitation has resulted in an antitrust charge by the European Union :

The European Commission has informed Apple of its preliminary view that it abused its dominant position in markets for mobile wallets on iOS devices. By limiting access to a standard technology used for contactless payments with mobile devices in stores (‘Near-Field Communication (NFC)’ or ‘tap and go’), Apple restricts competition in the mobile wallets market on iOS.

The Commission takes issue with the decision by Apple to prevent mobile wallets app developers, from accessing the necessary hardware and software (‘NFC input’) on its devices, to the benefit of its own solution, Apple Pay.

However, the newly-approved Touch ‘n Go eWallet version 1.7.73 continued to feature the NFC reload option.

Therefore, it seems more likely that Apple removed the app earlier due to the Face Verification feature in the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app.

In fact, the new Touch ‘n Go eWallet version 1.7.73 now lacks the Face Verification feature. Their FAQ also stated that :

Face verification is being upgraded for iOS users, this feature will be temporarily disabled. Kindly use your PIN as alternate authentication.

The previous version of Touch ‘n Go eWallet could have contravened this App Store Review Guidelines rule :

2.5.13 Apps using facial recognition for account authentication must use LocalAuthentication (and not ARKit or other facial recognition technology) where possible, and must use an alternate authentication method for users under 13 years old.

But at least Apple iPhone users can rest assured that they will continue to get the latest Touch ‘n Go eWallet app. They just have to live without the Face Verification feature for now…

How To Add MySJ Vaccine Certificate To Apple Wallet + Health

Find out how to add your MySejahtera vaccine certificate to Apple Wallet and Apple Health!

Here is what you need to know!

Apple Wallet + Health Now Support MySJ Vaccine Certificate!

When Apple released iOS 15.4, it included support for the EU Digital COVID Certificate (EUDCC) in both Apple Wallet and Apple Health.

This allows you to store your EUDCC in Apple Wallet, and verifiable versions of your COVID-19 vaccinations, lab results and recovery records in Apple Health.

Happily, the EU officially accepted the MySejahtera digital COVID-19 certificate, connecting Malaysia to the EUDCC trust framework on 4 April 2022.

Now that’s done, you can add your MySejahtera vaccine certificate to both Apple Wallet and Apple Health!

In this video, we will show you how to add your MySejahtera vaccine certificate to both Apple Wallet and Apple Health.

Read more : How To Get PDF Of Vaccine Certificate In MySejahtera!

For those who prefer a pictorial guide, here are the steps :

Step 1 : Please make sure you update to iOS 15.4 or newer. We highly recommend upgrading to the latest iOS 15.4.1.

Step 2 : Open MySejahtera and look for the QR codes :
a) Go to MySejahtera > Profile
b) Scroll down to your digital COVID-19 certificate
c) Tap on the Show QR button
d) Take screenshots of the QR codes, or photos of them using another phone. Please make sure each screenshot or photo only has a single QR code.
You can also find these QR codes in the PDF version of your vaccine certificate.

Step 3 : You will now need to scan the QR codes. There are three ways to do it.

Option A : Use Camera App

Use this method if you took photos of the QR codes using a different phone, or you printed the QR codes.

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Aim the rear camera at one of the QR codes in your MySejahtera vaccine certificate.
  3. The Camera app will recognise the QR code and ask you if you wish to add to Wallet & Health.
  4. Tap on the notification.
  5. Tap on the Add to Wallet & Health option.
  6. Tap Done.

Option B : Use Photos

Use this method if you took screenshots of the QR codes. But please make sure each screenshot only has one QR code.

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Tap on the screenshot of your QR code to open it.
  3. Tap on the QR code in the image, and hold.
  4. Tap on the notification “Open in Health“.
  5. Tap on the Add to Wallet & Health option.
  6. Tap Done.

Option C : Use Wallet

Use this method if you took photos of the QR codes using a different phone, or you printed the QR codes.

  1. Open the Wallet app.
  2. Tap on the Get button.
  3. Tap on the Scan Code option to launch the Camera app.
  4. Aim the rear camera at one of the QR codes in your MySejahtera vaccine certificate.
  5. The Camera app will recognise the QR code and ask you if you wish to add to Wallet & Health.
  6. Tap on the notification.
  7. Tap on the Add to Wallet & Health option.
  8. Tap Done.

Step 4 : Repeat Step 3 for all of the QR codes in your MySejahtera vaccine certificate, and you are done!

You should now see all of your MySejahtera vaccine certificate QR codes in your Apple Wallet. If you have three QR codes, all three should appear.

This will allow any health authority to quickly check and verify all of your COVID-19 vaccinations.

This is similar to showing them your digital COVID-19 vaccination certificate in MySejahtera.

You will also find your MySejahtera vaccination details in Apple Health, under Immunisations.

If you tap on Immunisations, you will see a list of your COVID-19 vaccinations, including the type of vaccine and when you received them.

I hope you found my guide useful. Please feel free to share it out!

Can’t Book 5-11 Yo Vaccine Appointment? Here’s The Fix!

If you can’t book the vaccine appointment for your 5-11 year-old child, here are the solutions to fix that problem!

Many Parents Can’t Book 5-11 Yo Vaccine Appointment!

Many parents are complaining that they are unable to book the vaccine appointment for their 5-11 year-old children!

They received the link in MySejahtera to book their child’s vaccine appointment, but the link does NOT work!

No matter how many times they tap / click on it, nothing happens.

Note : If you did not receive the “Click here to book your dependent’s appointment” link, please wait. The MySejahtera team appears to be releasing that option in batches to reduce load on their servers. Your turn will come shortly.

Can’t Book 5-11 Yo Vaccine Appointment? Here’s The Fix!

If you can’t book the vaccine appointment for your 5-11 year-old child, here are the solutions to fix that problem!

Solution #1 : Update MySejahtera

As I mentioned in my earlier guide, the booking system is only available in MySejahtera 1.1.6 and above.

You may see the vaccine booking option appear in an earlier version of MySejahtera, but it will NOT work until you update to version 1.1.6 or later.

So if you have this problem, first go to the Apple App Store / Google Play Store / HUAWEI AppGallery and update to MySejahtera 1.1.6 or later.

If MySejahtera does not update properly in your Android smartphone, please make sure you allow the Files and media permission :

Step 1 : Go to Settings > Apps > MySejahtera > Permissions.

Step 2 : Tap on Files and media under the Denied list.

Step 3 : Tap on Allow all the time.

Solution #2 : Force Close MySejahtera

If you had earlier updated to MySejahtera 1.1.6 (or newer), then you should try restarting MySejahtera by “force closing” it. Not just use the Home button, which only minimises it.

In Android, tap on the App Overview button, and swipe up / press on the X button to “force close” it.

For iOS devices with a Home button, double tap on the Home button, and swipe up to “force close” it.

For iOS devices without a Home button, swipe up and hold, and then swipe up on MySejahtera to “force close” it.

Then reopen MySejahtera, and see if the booking system now works.

Solution #3 : Clear MySejahtera App Cache

If the two solutions above still does not work, you can try to clear the App Cache if you are using an Android device.

Step 1 : Go to Settings > Apps > MySejahtera

Step 2 : Scroll down and tap on the Storage option.

Step 3 : Tap on the Clear cache option at the bottom.

Step 4 : Log into MySejahtera and see if the booking system works!

Solution #4 : Delete MySejahtera App Data

If Solution #3 did not solve your problem, you can repeat the steps above, and tap on Clear data instead of just tapping on Clear cache.

But be warned that this step will wipe out your login data, so you will need to log into MySejahtera after this. It will be similar to deleting and reinstalling MySejahtera.

I hope this guide helps you solve the vaccine appointment booking problem in MySejahtera!

Don’t forget to SHARE this guide with your friends!

MySJ Trace : Frequently Asked Questions + Answers!

The new MySJ Trace feature has raised many questions, and here are the answers to your frequently asked questions!

MySJ Trace : Frequently Asked Questions + Answers!

Ever since the MySejahtera team launched the MySJ Trace feature, many questions were raised by people over its security, privacy, and usability.

So with help from Dr. Mahesh Appannan, the Head of Data at the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) of the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM), here are the answers to some of your frequently asked questions about MySJ Trace!

These answers supplement the original frequently asked questions (FAQ) about the MySJ Trace feature, which you can read in the next section.

Question #1 : Why Does MySJ Lists Interactions Even At Home?

The interactions refers to Bluetooth devices (with MySJ Trace enabled) that your MySejahtera app detected.

MySJ Trace can detect Bluetooth signals from as far as 10 metres away, but can be reduced by barriers (walls, your body, other electronics, etc.)

It will not only detect the smartphones of your family members (with MySJ Trace enabled), but also your neighbours, who can be in the floor above, below, or next to your home.

There is nothing to worry about these “interactions”. It just means you came within 10 metres of people who have MySJ Trace enabled.

Question #2 : Does Interactions Mean Casual / Close Contacts?

No, not all interactions are flagged as casual / close contacts, if you become COVID-19 positive.

The algorithm takes into account the signal strength (RSSI – Received Signal Strength Indicator) that your phone detects, and your exposure time.

The parameters used to classify casual or close contacts are refined over time for maximum accuracy. For example, if the Omicron variant becomes widespread, the exposure time will be shortened, and the distance extended, for someone to be considered a casual / close contact.

Question #3 : Why Do People In The Same Family Have Different Number Of Interactions?

Even if your family goes out together, you may all have different number of interactions, because it depends on a variety of facts :

  • your individual proximity to other people,
  • anything that blocks Bluetooth signals – their bodies, other electronics, electronic keys, etc.
  • whether you are holding the phone, or it is in your pocket, etc.

Question #4 : Does MySJ Trace Transmit My Data With Each Interaction?

No. There is no handshake or exchange of information with each interaction.

MySJ Trace detects the Bluetooth signal of other phones, and logs when that “interaction” occurred, and the signal strength.

It’s like listening to the radio – the broadcaster does not receive anything in return.

Question #5 : Does MySJ Trace Transmit My Data?

No. MySJ Trace stores all of the recorded data in your phone, and does not automatically upload it.

Only if you are COVID-19 positive, are you asked to upload your contact history for the last 14 days, so that people who were your close contact can be notified.

MySJ Trace requires your explicit consent to transmit your data to the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM).

Question #6 : How Long Does MySJ Trace Store Data?

MySJ Trace only stores data for the last 14 days, on a First-In, First-Out basis.

All data older than the most recent 14 days are automatically purged.

Question #7 : Why Do You Still Need To Check In Using QR Code?

First – not everyone is using MySJ Trace, so there still needs to be an alternative contact tracing method.

The QR code check-in function also gives KKM data to undertake faster contact tracing, especially involving a major cluster.

Question #8 : What’s The Difference Between MySJ Trace And QR Code Check-In?

MySJ Trace allows for automatic contact tracing, while QR code check-in gives KKM critical data. In addition :

  • MySJ Trace algorithm is based on time and distance (Bluetooth signal strength), while
  • Check-In algorithm is based only on time

Question #9 : Does MySJ Trace Use A Lot Of Battery Power?

MySJ Trace uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which consumes significantly lower power than standard Bluetooth wireless communications. The impact on battery life is minimal.

Question #10 : Why Does MySJ Trace Not Use Exposure Notification By Google / Apple?

By Google and Apple standards, an Exposure Notification (EN) app must maintain user anonymity, and record proximity data anonymously. It cannot contain Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

The MySejahtera app necessarily contains your identity, vaccination status and certificates, and so on. Therefore, it cannot comply with Google and Apple’s requirements for an Exposure Notification app.

MySJ Trace : Official Answers To Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the official answers to the MySJ Trace frequently-asked questions (FAQ):

1. What is MySJ Trace?

MySJ Trace is a contact tracing application developed by the Government of Malaysia.

It adopts a community-driven approach where participating devices exchange proximity information whenever an app detects another device with MySJ Trace app installed.

This application allows the identification of people who were in close proximity to COVID-19 infected individual

2. What is the difference between MySJ Trace and MySejahtera?

MySejahtera & MySJ Trace are used by the Ministry of Health (MOH) to help manage the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia.

MySejahtera allows users to perform quick health-self assessment and for the Ministry of Health (MOH) to monitor users’ health condition and take immediate actions in providing treatments.

Meanwhile, MySJ Trace further complements MySejahtera by detecting and tracing the individuals who are in close contact with the COVID-19 positive patients.

Read more : Can The Government Use MySJ Trace To Track You 24/7?

3. Who developed MySJ Trace?

MySJ Trace was developed through a strategic cooperation between government agencies of Malaysia :

  • Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI)
  • Ministry of Health (KKM)
  • Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU)
  • Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS)

4. Who are the users of MySJ Trace?

All Malaysian citizens and residents of Malaysia.

5. Where can I download MySJ Trace?

Users only need to update the MySejahtera application to the latest version.

6. How does MySJ Trace function?

MySJ Trace enables participating devices to exchange proximity information whenever the app detects another device with the same app installed. Data collected will be stored and processed only by the MOH officers.

When a user is identified to be COVID-19 positive, the user will initiate a process to upload the data from the user’s smartphone to a secured database managed by the MOH.

7. What is contact tracing?

New MySJ Trace Feature : What You Need To Know!

MySejahtera has a new feature called MySJ Trace, which logs your close contacts for more accurate contact tracing.

Here is what you need to know about the new MySejahtera feature!

MySJ Trace : New Tracking Feature In MySejahtera

Currently, MySejahtera relies on manual logging in at various entry points, which results in many false positives and false negatives.

  • false positive : you wrongly get identified as a close or casual contact
  • false negative : you are not flagged as a close contact, even when you come into close proximity with a COVID-19 positive person

To eliminate those errors, MySejahtera is introducing a new and more accurate contact tracing feature called MySJ Trace.

Similar to Singapore’s TraceTogether app, MySJ Trace uses Bluetooth technology to more accurately determine your proximity to other people, so MySejahtera can better determine if you are a close contact, or not.

It also removes the need to manually check out from the locations you checked in earlier.

Read more : Can The Government Use MySJ Trace To Track You 24/7?

MySejahtera with MySJ Trace : Now Available For Android!

MySJ Trace is currently available only in MySejahtera version 1.1.3 and above.

It was first introduced in MySejahtera version 1.1.3 which is available only from the HUAWEI AppGallery

But on 25 December 2021, it was also introduced in MySejahtera version 1.1.4 in the Google Play Store, so all Android users will have access to it.

As of 28 December 2021, it is still NOT available in the Apple App Store. Version 1.0.49 in the Apple App Store does NOT support this feature.

Read more : MySejahtera with MySJ Trace Now Available For Android!

MySJ Trace : How To Enable It?

MySJ Trace is (currently) NOT mandatory and is an opt-in feature, so you actually have to manually enable it, if you want to participate.

Step 1 : Update to the MySejahtera version that has MySJ Trace.

Step 2 : Open MySejahtera, and you will see a black MySJ Trace section in the default Check-in screen.

Step 3 : Tap on Setup MySJ Trace to begin the setup process.

Step 4 : Tap on the Start button in the initial explainer screen.

Step 5 : Tap the I agree button to consent to give your “interaction information” for the past 14 days to the Malaysia Ministry of Health for “contact tracing purposes”.

Step 6 : In the App Permissions screen, tap on the Allow button.

Step 7 : First, you will be asked to allow MySejahtera to access your smartphone’s location. Tap on While using the app.

Step 8 : Next, you will be asked to allow MySejahtera to detect your location all the time. Tap on Allow all the time.

Step 9 : Now, you will be asked to enable Bluetooth, if it is not already enabled.

Step 10 : Once all necessary permissions have been enabled, just tap on the Close button.

That’s it! You have now activated MySJ Trace in MySejahtera.

If at any time you do not wish to participate, you can simply disable the permissions, and/or reinstall MySejahtera.

Apple Education Discount Now Requires UNiDAYS Verification!

The little loophole is now closed – Apple education discount now requires UNiDAYS verification!

Here is what you need to know…

Apple Education Discount : Formerly Based On Trust + Audit

For many years now, savvy parents and techies have counted on the Apple education discount to get some financial relief on Mac computers and iPad tablets.

Ostensibly limited to teachers and staff of educational facilities, as well as college and university students, the Apple education discount programme was based on trust.

Anyone can go to the Apple Education page, and order a Mac computer or iPad tablet with (usually) a 10% discount. Apple doesn’t even ask you to prove your qualification for the education discount.

Instead, Apple performs random audits. If you cannot prove that you are an educator, or a college/university student, then they have the right to charge your credit card for the education discount you (illegally) received earlier.

Apple Education Discount Now Requires UNiDAYS Verification!

Sadly, it appears that Apple is moving away from the trust system, and is requiring verification through UNiDAYS in certain countries.

  • France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Italy
  • South Korea
  • Spain
  • Malaysia : Started on 15 December 2021
  • United Kingdom

Unlike the earlier Apple education discount programme, UNiDAYS verification greatly limits those who qualify for discounted Apple Mac computers and iPad tablets :

  • Students who are 16 years and above
  • Must be currently enrolled in the Sixth Form, a college or a university
  • Must have a personal institution email address (.edu email, for example), or a credit card-style student ID, issued by the school / college / university

The Good

Signing up for UNiDAYS has some advantages. It gives you access to discount programmes for other companies.

And students who sign up for UNiDAYS will get a free Apple Music student subscription in certain countries, which may even include Apple TV+ access!

The Bad

Parents cannot sign up and purchase for their children. Each student must sign up for their own UNiDAYS account.

If UNiDAYS cannot automatically verify your student credentials, it has a manual process but that could mean several days of delay to verify your account.

The Ugly

The UNiDAYS verification process blocks parents of younger students from getting the education discount.

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, parents are forced to purchase tablets and laptops for their children’s online classes. While not entirely legit, the Apple education discount has helped many parents alleviate the high cost of providing each child with a tablet or computer.

While this verification process will help Apple cut down on fraud, I wish they would take the opportunity to open up the education discount programme to younger students.

That would really be a win-win situation – parents get a small but much appreciated discount, and Apple gets a head start on developing the next-generation of Apple users.

Until then, parents of younger children can “work around” this limitation, by asking a college / university student to help them make the purchase.

Countries Where Apple Education Discount Do Not Require UNiDAYS!

This switch to UNiDAYS verification for the Apple Education Discount programme appears to be a gradual process.

For now, these countries still do not require UNiDAYS verification :

  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • China
  • Hong Kong
  • Ireland
  • Japan
  • Mexico
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • Russia
  • Singapore
  • Taiwan
  • Thailand
  • United States

So parents of younger children in those countries can still get the Apple Education discount, without jumping through the UNiDAYS hoop.

Pro Tip : When purchasing any Mac computer or iPad with the Apple Education discount, make sure you grab all the accessories you need at the same time, to get the discount as well.

WW3 Game Goes Viral With Map Of West Taiwan + Uyghur!

A World War 3 strategy game has cleverly gone viral, with its map of West Taiwan and an Uyghur nation!

Take a look at what happen!

WW3 Game Goes Viral With Map Of West Taiwan + Uyghur Nation!

Games by smaller developers often have a tough time going viral, which is especially important for F2P (free-to-play) massively-multiplayer online games.

Bytro Labs – the German developer of the mobile version of Conflict of Nations: World War 3, appears to have hit the nail on the head with their latest advertisement.

On 3 December 2021, Bytro Labs started advertising their mobile game on Facebook using a map of a tiny China, with a massive West Taiwan to the south, and even an Uyghur nation to the west!

It seemed to be an intentional attempt to go viral, and boy, did they succeed!

Chinese Netizens Outraged Over Map Of West Taiwan + Uyghur Nation!

Needless to say, the Conflict of Nations: World War 3 advertisement quickly went viral, with Chinese netizens outraged over the map showing West Taiwan and an Uyghur nation.

Some Chinese websites and netizens derisively noted the many “mistakes” in the map :

  • Mainland China was labelled as West Taiwan
  • Mongolia was labelled as China
  • The Xinjiang province was labelled as the Uyghur nation
  • The nine-dash line was missing

What those Chinese netizens don’t realise is that Conflict of Nations: WW3 is military strategy game set in the future. So the maps don’t really have make sense. After all, World War 3 itself has not happened!

It’s no different than playing any of the Civilizations game to end up with Germany conquering America. Or watching alternate history shows like The Man in the High Castle or For All Mankind.

More importantly, the game itself does not have those “mistakes” – the actual map uses the correct official name and boundary for each country.

Bytro Labs Harnessed Little Pink Army For Free Marketing?

Chinese netizens seem to believe that this was an intentional attempt to besmirch their beloved Middle Kingdom, sharing the screenshots of the advertisement and criticising it ad nauseam.

But this is likely a clever way for Bytro Labs to harness China’s Little Pink (小粉红, xiǎo fěnhóng) army for free marketing.

They probably decided to emulate how Malaysian singer-songwriter, Namewee, leveraged the Chinese Little Pink army to go viral with his satirical song, It Might Break Your Pinky Heart!

After all, the other “mistakes” in the map suggests that Bytro Labs was trying to “trigger” controversy in multiple countries. But only Chinese netizens took the bait.

  • Nepal was labelled as Georgia
  • Laos is now part of Vietnam
  • There is a country called Kashmir

Bytro Labs only ran that Facebook advertisement for a short time, but they succeeded in getting their game noticed worldwide, even by gamers who would never have given the game another thought.

And the Little Pink army is now actively engaged in helping them reach out to more people. You just can’t beat that kind of FREE viral marketing.

Bytro Labs and Namewee’s recent success in harnessing the Little Pink army could encourage more businesses that don’t rely on the Chinese market, to leverage their sensitivities to go viral.

Interesting times indeed!

New MySejahtera Vaccine Appointment Feature For Seniors?

Is it true that MySejahtera has a new vaccine appointment feature for senior citizens of 60 years and above?

Find out what is this new MySejahtera feature that is going viral on social media, and what the FACTS really are!

New MySejahtera Vaccine Appointment Feature For Seniors?

People are posting and sharing messages about a new MySejahtera feature that lets senior citizens of 60 years and above request for COVID-19 vaccine appointments.

Here are two examples of those viral messages :

For those above 60,who still do not have an appointment for your vaccination, you can go to MySejahtera Helpdesk, and press B👆🏻

For all those who are yet to get your vaccination appointment.

FYI
For those above 60 yrs and have yet to get vaccination date, you can do the following:-
1. open mysejahtera
2. click on help desk
3. Start
4. Select option B
5. You will be given an appointment.

It’s for 60yrs n above.

Not A New MySejahtera Vaccine Appointment Feature For Seniors…

The viral messages are not exactly correct.

This is NOT a new MySejahtera feature lets senior citizens request for, and receive, a COVID-19 vaccine appointment.

This is really a Helpdesk alternative to the JKJAV hotline for people who have already registered for their COVID-19 vaccination.

This is similar to the new Helpdesk features that allow people to check, change or cancel their vaccine appointments online, instead of through the JKJAV hotline.

Here are the facts…

Fact #1 : It Is Not A New MySejahtera App Feature

The viral messages ask us to open the MySejahtera app and tap on Helpdesk to get to the new vaccine appointment feature.

The truth is tapping on the Helpdesk option in the MySejahtera app merely opens up a web browser, and redirects you to the online MySejahtera Helpdesk website.

You don’t even need to use the MySejahtera app. You can access the MySejahtera Helpdesk website using any Internet browser via these links – English | Bahasa Melayu.

Fact #2 : It Is Just A New Help Option

The truth is – this is just a new Helpdesk option, to help people check for their COVID-19 vaccine appointments, and for the MySejahtera team identify those who didn’t get their vaccine appointments yet.

If you select B. 60 years old and above but haven’t received my appointment (Phase 2), you will be asked if you have  chronic illness or not.

Whatever option you select, you will be taught how to check for your vaccine appointment in MySejahtera :

  • Click on the COVID-19 Vaccination icon on the MySejahtera main page.
  • Choose the Vaccine for [your name] option to view your appointment details

And if you still do NOT see your vaccine appointment, then you are asked to submit your MySejahtera user ID (MySJ ID) and your MyKad or passport number.

In the next page, you will be asked to submit your mobile number and an email address for them to write back to you on what to do next.

This will allow the MySejahtera team to look into your vaccine appointment, or why your MySejahtera app does not display the vaccine appointments.

It does NOT mean you will be automatically given your COVID-19 vaccine appointments, as the viral messages claim.

Your COVID-19 vaccine appointment will be issued according to these criteria :

  • when you registered for COVID-19 vaccination
  • your age
  • if you have any co-morbidities (chronic illness)
  • your location

Nowhere in this process do you see it being mentioned that this feature allows you to request for a vaccine appointment.

Fact #3 : It Is More Convenient Than Calling Hotline

To be clear, this is a legitimate Helpdesk option to help senior citizens age 60 years and above check for their COVID-19 vaccine appointments.

It is no different than calling the JKJAV hotline at 1800-888-828, to ask why you have not received your vaccine appointment.

Now that this new Helpdesk option has been introduced, you should definitely use it instead of calling the JKJAV hotline, which is always busy and hard to get through.

Fact #4 : This Is Not A Vaccine Registration Feature

This new Helpdesk option helps to identify senior citizens who may not have received their appointments, possibly due to these reasons :

  • not aware of where to look for vaccine appointment details
  • did not even register for COVID-19 vaccination
  • MySejahtera app cache corruption

However, it is not a replacement for the COVID-19 vaccine registration process. You cannot use this “method” to ask for a COVID-19 vaccine appointment if you have not yet registered for it.

Even with the introduction of this new Helpdesk feature, you must still register yourself for COVID-19 vaccination through these five ways :

  1. The MySejahtera app – a future update will introduce a button to register for an appointment.
  2. The Vaksin COVID website.
  3. The telephone hotline : 1800-888-828
  4. Manually at health clinics, hospitals and private clinics
  5. House-to-house registration at targeted rural areas for senior citizens.

Please make sure you register for your free COVID-19 vaccine ASAP!
