Warning : Pahang Limits Dining To Just 1 Hour!

Please be warned that Pahang limits dining at eateries, cafes and restaurants to just 1 hour!

Warning : Pahang Limits Dining To Just 1 Hour!

On 5 March 2021, Pahang switched to the less stringent RMCO / PKPP restrictions, which allowed some limited tourism, as well dining in at eateries, cafes and restaurants.

However, the Pahang Disaster Management Committee decided to impose an additional limitdining is limited to 1 hour per customer!

In Pahang, all dining premises must follow requirements :

  • there must be 1 metre distance between tables
  • seating capacity is according to table size and 1 metre physical distance between customers
  • maximum dining time is 1 hour per customer
  • the dining in capacity of the premise must be stated at the premise entrance, and obeyed

Scan MySejahtera Every Hour While Dining In Pahang?

While sitting inside a cafe or restaurant for hours will increase your risk of getting infected with COVID-19, it seems impractical to have a standard 1 hour limit for dining premises.

After all, a 5-course dinner at a full service restaurant will definitely take longer than an hour, while a quick bite at a burger joint will last less than 30 minutes.

So unless they are basically asking restaurants to serve pre-cooked meals, we have no idea how the Pahang state government is going to enforce this rule.

However, scanning MySejahtera every hour is NOT going to work, because it will merely prove to the police that you have been inside the cafe or restaurant for more than an hour.

A quick check on MySejahtera will show the police just how many times you scanned MySejahtera at the same dining outlet, and therefore, how many hours you were there.

Therefore, the only thing you can do while in Pahang is to limit yourself to dining in at cafes and eateries that serve pre-cooked or quick meals, and avoid full-service restaurants that serve multiple-course meals.

The safest option is to order food to go – by drive-through or takeaway – or have it delivered to you.

It’s just not worth getting a RM 10,000 fine for dining in more than 1 hour in Pahang…

MySejahtera Now Shows Correct Vaccine Registration Dates!

It took them almost 2 weeks to fix the issue, but MySejahtera will now show you the correct vaccine registration and assessment dates!

MySejahtera Now Shows Correct Vaccine Registration Dates!

After initially showing the wrong registration dates for the COVID-19 vaccination program, MySejahtera will now show you the correct dates!

This will be a real relief for the public who has been thoroughly confused by the wrong dates, and suggestions that their registration did not go through.

Even though National Immunisation Programme Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that the first registration was already recorded, we all want to see it stated correctly in MySejahtera.

As you can now see in this comparison, the registration and assessment dates are now accurately reflected.

Haven’t Registered For Vaccine On MySejahtera?

If you have not registered for vaccine on MySejahtera, please do so ASAP! It’s very simple!

We also have a pictorial and video guide for you : How To Register For COVID-19 Vaccination On MySejahtera!

You can also register for vaccination online or by phone!

Online Registration : Malay | English

Phone Hotline : 1800-888-828

So get registered for your FREE vaccination, and be amongst the first to be free from COVID-19!

Note : Do NOT register again online or by phone, if you have already registered via MySejahtera.

Wrong MySejahtera Vaccine Registration Dates?

On 3 March 2021, MySejahtera started displaying a vaccination status page, but it only appeared for some people.

For everyone else, clicking on the Vaccine for [Your Name] link just leads them back to the registration process, instead of the status page.

They would have to go through the entire vaccination registration process again, before the status page would appear.

After they re-register for vaccination on MySejahtera, the Vaccine for [Your Name] link will then correctly show the vaccination status page.

There was also concern when users noticed that MySejahtera was showing a new registration date, instead of the original registration date.

No Need To Register Again For Vaccine On MySejahtera!

On 4 March 2021, the National Immunisation Programme Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, said that MySejahtera is currently updating its vaccination registration record.

Missing Vaccination Status Page?

He assured everyone that all MySejahtera users should see the vaccination status page today.

If you still do not see the vaccination status page, you do NOT need to re-register for the vaccination programme.

Wrong Vaccination Registration Date?

He also said that those who re-registered and received a new date on their vaccination status page do not need to worry.

The appointment will be set according to the first registration date, not the new registration date.

Hello? WhatsApp Is Already Sharing Data With Facebook!

People are worried that a new WhatsApp privacy policy update will force them to share data with Facebook.

Well, here’s the real surprise – don’t you know that WhatsApp is already doing that?

Find out what’s going on, and what WhatsApp is really changing…

New WhatsApp Privacy Policy : Share Data With Facebook?

Many of you may have woken up to this pop-up on WhatsApp, alerting you to a change in its terms and privacy policy, which takes effect on 8 February 2021.

While you can delay the decision by clicking NOT NOW, you have to accept the new terms and privacy policy, to continue using WhatsApp.

Otherwise, the alert subtly suggests, you should “delete your account”.

Hello? WhatsApp Is Already Sharing Data With Facebook!

Many WhatsApp users are shocked by this new development, and pondering about whether they should jump to Telegram or some other instant messenger.

What’s more egregious though is that many websites are “warning” their readers about this new, shocking development.

The fact of the matter is – WhatsApp has been sharing data with Facebook for years!

In The Beginning : Private Communication Assured

After Facebook bought WhatsApp for a cool US$19 billion, Jan Koum set the record straight on 17 March 2014 :

Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA, and we built WhatsApp around the goal of knowing as little about you as possible: You don’t have to give us your name and we don’t ask for your email address. We don’t know your birthday. We don’t know your home address. We don’t know where you work. We don’t know your likes, what you search for on the internet or collect your GPS location. None of that data has ever been collected and stored by WhatsApp, and we really have no plans to change that.

2016 : WhatsApp Starts Sharing Data With Facebook

In August 2016, WhatsApp announced that they would start sharing data with Facebook, after rolling out end-to-end encryption.

[B]y coordinating more with Facebook, we’ll be able to do things like track basic metrics about how often people use our services and better fight spam on WhatsApp. And by connecting your phone number with Facebook’s systems, Facebook can offer better friend suggestions and show you more relevant ads if you have an account with them. For example, you might see an ad from a company you already work with, rather than one from someone you’ve never heard of.

At that time, WhatsApp offered existing users a special one-time only option to opt-out of the data sharing, but only if they did it within 30 days.

If you are an existing user, you can choose not to have your WhatsApp account information shared with Facebook to improve your Facebook ads and products experiences. Existing users who accept our updated Terms and Privacy Policy will have an additional 30 days to make this choice by going to Settings > Account.

If you did not opt-out within 30 days back in August 2016, your data would be shared with Facebook.

This opt-out option was NOT provided to new WhatsApp users who registered on or after 25 August 2016.

After 24 September 2016 : WhatsApp Has Been Sharing Data With Facebook

With the singular exception of existing users who managed to opt-out by 24 September 2016, the data of every other WhatsApp user has been shared with Facebook.

8 February 2021 Onwards : More Information Is Shared

What will really change from 8 February 2021 onwards is the additional information that WhatsApp will share with Facebook :

  • Status Information. You may provide us your status if you choose to include one on your account. Learn how to use status on Android, iPhone, or KaiOS.
  • Transactions And Payments Data. If you use our payments services, or use our Services meant for purchases or other financial transactions, we process additional information about you, including payment account and transaction information. Payment account and transaction information includes information needed to complete the transaction (for example, information about your payment method, shipping details and transaction amount). If you use our payments services available in your country or territory, our privacy practices are described in the applicable payments privacy policy.
  • Location Information. We collect and use precise location information from your device with your permission when you choose to use location-related features, like when you decide to share your location with your contacts or view locations nearby or locations others have shared with you. There are certain settings relating to location-related information which you can find in your device settings or the in-app settings, such as location sharing. Even if you do not use our location-related features, we use IP addresses and other information like phone number area codes to estimate your general location (e.g., city and country). We also use your location information for diagnostics and troubleshooting purposes.
  • User Reports. Just as you can report other users, other users or third parties may also choose to report to us your interactions and your messages with them or others on our Services; for example, to report possible violations of our Terms or policies. When a report is made, we collect information on both the reporting user and reported user.
  • Businesses On WhatsApp. Businesses you interact with using our Services may provide us with information about their interactions with you. We require each of these businesses to act in accordance with applicable law when providing any information to us.When you message with a business on WhatsApp, keep in mind that the content you share may be visible to several people in that business. In addition, some businesses might be working with third-party service providers (which may include Facebook) to help manage their communications with their customers. For example, a business may give such third-party service provider access to its communications to send, store, read, manage, or otherwise process them for the business. To understand how a business processes your information, including how it might share your information with third parties or Facebook, you should review that business’ privacy policy or contact the business directly.

Opted Out In 2016? It Is Still Honoured!

WhatsApp will apparently continue to honour the decision of those who opted-out of data sharing in August 2016.

For those who opted out, you can agree to the new policy, and your data will still NOT be shared with Facebook.

To check if you opted-out in August 2016, you will need to check in your WhatsApp account – Settings > Account > Request Account Info.

Fact Check : Fat Bidin Claims On MySejahtera Snooping!

Wan Azlee, who goes by Fat Bidin, claims that MySejahtera is mining private information from our phones.

Find out what he discovered, and what the FACTS really are!

Updated @ 2020-12-03 : Added MySejahtera version history for more context.

Updated @ 2020-12-01 : Added more information, including how to disable permissions in Android and iOS for the paranoid.

Fat Bidin : MySejahtera Is Mining Information From Our Phones!

In Episode 41 of Fat Bidin Knows Everything, Wan Azlee claimed (between mouthfuls of oats) that MySejahtera is mining a wealth of private information from our phones.

His evidence? A report by the Exodus Privacy website, stating that MySejahtera has 6 trackers and 24 permissions.

He went through the 24 permissions and made these concerning observations about MySejahtera :

  • it can take control of your phone and pair it with your Bluetooth devices
  • directly call phone numbers
  • find accounts on your phone
  • read your contacts in your phone
  • read the contents of your SD card
  • modify or delete the contents of your SD card
  • prevent your phone from sleeping
  • modify your contacts

Phwoarrrr…. shocking, isn’t it? Wan Azlee / Fat Bidin then asks the Malaysia Ministry of Health to be transparent and tell us what’s going on.

Well, let’s take a closer look at his claims…

Fat Bidin On MySejahtera Is Mining Our Information : A Fact Check

Wan Azlee is very articulate, but Fat Bidin honestly doesn’t quite know everything… and here’s why.

Fact #1 : That MySejahtera Version Was From April 2020

Fat Bidin posted his video on 24 November 2020, and we noticed that he was checking an old version of MySejahtera – version 1.0.10, that was posted way back in April 2020.

For the record, there has been FOURTEEN UPDATES since that version :

  • 1.0.11 : 23 April 2020
  • 1.0.12 : 28 April 2020
  • 1.0.13 : 3 May 2020
  • 1.0.15 : 4 May 2020
  • 1.0.16 : 13 May 2020
  • 1.0.17 : 23 May 2020
  • 1.0.18 : 30 May 2020
  • 1.0.19 : 3 June 2020
  • 1.0.20 : 28 June 2020
  • 1.0.21 : 30 June 2020
  • 1.0.22 : 21 July 2020
  • 1.0.23 : 29 July 2020
  • 1.0.24 : 11 August 2020
  • 1.0.25 : 5 November 2020

The latest version of MySejahtera – version 1.0.25 –  was released on 5 November 2020 – 19 days before Wan Azlee posted his video.

Why on Earth would he focus on a 6 month-old version of the app, when there is a much newer version?

Fact #2 : Exodus Posted Their Latest MySejahtera Report On 20 November 2020

Exodus posted their latest report on the latest version of MySejahtera (version 1.0.25) on 20 November 2020 at 10:47 am (as you can see in this screenshot).

That was 4 days before Wan Azlee posted his video, so why didn’t he use this new report instead?

Fact #3 : MySejahtera Has 1 Tracker + 14 Permissions According To Exodus

According to the November 20 Exodus report, MySejahtera has 1 tracker – Google Firebase Analytics, and 14 permissions, of which the highlighted ones were :

  • ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION : access approximate location (network-based)
  • ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION : access precise location (GPS and network-based)
  • CALL_PHONE : directly call phone numbers
  • CAMERA : take pictures and videos
  • READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE : read the contents of your SD card
  • WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE : modify or delete the contents of your SD card

We immediately noticed that several controversial permissions are no longer in it :

  • GET_ACCOUNTS : find accounts on the device
  • READ_CONTACTS : read your contacts
  • WRITE_CONTACTS : modify your contacts

So if you are worried that MySejahtera is reading your contacts or modifying them, just UPDATE it to the latest version 1.0.25!

Fact #4 : Actual Permissions Are Fewer

When we checked MySejahtera 1.0.25 as installed in our phone, we found that it actually asked for and used only 11 permissions, instead of 14 as reported by Exodus.

The report also offered a bit more context about those permissions. For instance, location data is only made available when you are actively using the app.

That’s because the location data is used by MySejahtera for its Hotspot Tracker and Locate Health Screening Facility features.

In your phone, you can tap on them for more information on what they allow the app to do.

Fact #5 : Apps Need To Read, Modify + Delete Their Own Data

The permission to read, modify and delete content on our phone may seem ridiculous, but it is a necessity for most apps.

Unless the apps is merely a container for a website or web service, it needs to store data, and modify or delete it when necessary.

Fact #6 : Access To External / SD Card Is Necessary

Most developers will also ask for the permission to read, modify and delete content to the (micro) SD card, because of Adoptable Storage.

Adoptable Storage is a feature that lets smartphones use external storage (like a microSD card) as if it is part of their internal storage.

When a microSD card is used this way, apps like MySejahtera can be installed on it. Therefore, it would require permission to read, modify and delete its own data on the external storage card.

Fact #7 : Android Restricts Data Snooping

Apps that have access to read / modify / write external storage are allowed to access files from other apps. However, this is limited to only these three media collections :

  • MediaStore.Images
  • MediaStore.Video
  • MediaStore.Audio

MySejahtera, or any other app with similar permissions, cannot read / modify / delete data outside of those three media storage locations.

Fact #8 : MySejahtera Has A Privacy Policy

Like all other Android and iOS apps, MySejahtera has a privacy policy, where it is stated clearly that

MySejahtera is owned and operated by the Government of Malaysia. It is administrated by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and assisted by the National Security Council (NSC) and the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU). The Government assures that the collection of your personal information is align with Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709).

The app will not record user’s Personal Data except with the permission and voluntarily provided by the user. Information collected are used for monitoring and enforcement purposes by Government authorities in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. This information is not shared with other organizations for other purposes unless specifically stated.

Fact #9 : You Are Protected By PDPA 2010 (Act 709)

We are all protected by the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709).

Anyone who is caught sharing our personal data without permission is be liable to a fine not exceeding three hundred thousand ringgit or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or to both.

Fact #10 : You Can Disable Permissions

You can view and disable any permission that worries you :

Android

  1. Go to Settings > Apps >  MySejahtera > Permissions.
  2. Tap on the permission you don’t want, and select Deny.

Apple iOS

  1. Go to Settings > MySejahtera.
  2. Disable the permissions you don’t want.

But note that doing this will likely break some features in MySejahtera.

Fact #11 : Many Other Apps Are Worse For Your Privacy

When it comes to privacy, we have bigger fishes to fry. Take a look at how many trackers and permissions these four popular apps require.

They make MySejahtera look absolutely privacy-conscious!

Scan MySejahtera At Petrol Station, Or Get Fined RM1K?

CPRC says it’s not mandatory, but PDRM says you can be fined RM1,000 for failing to register MySejahtera at the petrol station!

So which is it? After flip-flopping, they finally clarified their stance… hopefully, for the LAST TIME!

Register MySejahtera At Petrol Station, Or Get Fined RM1K?

According to PDRM, you must register MySejahtera at the petrol station, even if you do not enter the convenience store! Otherwise, you could be subject to a RM1,000 fine!

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department deputy director DCP Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid confirmed this, saying “If the people do not register or scan, how will the police trace them if there are Covid-19 cases in the area?

As petrol stations are high-traffic public spaces, it is mandatory to register your visit using MySejahtera, as well as wear a face mask have your temperature scanned, and use a hand sanitiser.

However, it appears that petrol station operators may not be aware of this requirement either, as they do not put up MySejahtera QR codes at their pumps for motorists to register their visits…

But Didn’t CPRC Say MySejahtera Not Necessary At Petrol Station?

This email shows the CPRC (Crisis Preparedness and Respose Centre) team saying that it is NOT necessary to register your visit using MySejahtera if you are merely refuelling at the pump or making payments.

Sadly, it appears that CPRC and PDRM are not on the same page. CPRC says it’s not necessary, but PDRM insists it is mandatory.

Latest MySejahtera SOP For Petrol Stations : To Scan Or Not?

On 10 November 2020, Malaysia’s Senior Minister for Security Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri, issued an updated SOP on the use of MySejahtera in petrol stations in this press conference.

Here is a summary of the updated MySejahtera SOP for petrol stations :

MUST Scan MySejahtera / Register Manually

  • Making payments or purchases inside the petrol station’s convenience store.
  • Using the ATM machines inside the petrol station’s convenience store.
  • Using the petrol station’s toilet or surau.
  • Sending your car to the petrol station’s workshop.
  • Sending you car for a manual car wash.

DO NOT Need To Scan MySejahtera / Register Manually

  • Self-serving at the pump, and paying using their credit or debit cards or online app.
  • Paying the cashier through the pigeonhole.
  • Self-inflating your own tyres.
  • Using the auto car wash, unless you are paying inside the petrol station’s convenience store.
Situation Scan MySejahtera or
Register Manually?
Making payments inside the petrol station store YES
Making purchases from the convenience store YES
Using the toilet or surau YES
Sending car to petrol station’s workshop YES
Sending car for manual car wash YES
Self-serving at pump, and
paying with credit / debit card / mobile app
NO
Paying cashier through pigeonhole NO
Inflating tyres with air NO
Driving car through auto car wash NO

MySejahtera : Why Use It At Petrol Station?

MySejahtera is a mobile app developed by the Malaysian government. It serves as a contact tracing tool, as well as a way to disseminate verified information on COVID-19 in Malaysia.

Its users can log their movements by quickly and simply scanning a QR code at public places. This is a safer option to signing a logbook, because you won’t need to touch the logbook or use a shared pen.

Even though petrol pumps in Malaysia are generally self-served, petrol stations are high traffic public areas with pump attendants and employees, as well as other customers, who may be infected.

Registering your visit with MySejahtera at the petrol station will allow the authorities to quickly and accurately perform contact tracing if any infected person was at the petrol station.

That’s why they made it mandatory to register your visit with MySejahtera at the petrol station, even if you don’t enter the convenience store.

Will TikTok Be Banned In Pakistan After Student’s Death?

Will TikTok be banned by Pakistan after the death of a student today, like how PUBG was suspended recently?

Student’s Tragic Death While Shooting TikTok Video

Earlier today, 10 July 2020, a 14 year-old student in Pakistan accidentally shot himself while shooting a TikTok video, in the Bagan neighbourhood of Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The 14 year-old student, identified as Abdul Samad, was killed after he accidentally fired the gun while filming himself on TikTok.

Will TikTok Be Banned In Pakistan After Student Death?

This new tragedy follows a string of unfortunate deaths in Pakistan, while teenagers and children attempt to make popular TikTok videos :

  • June 2020 : 17 year-old boy accidentally pulled the trigger of his father’s gun while filming himself holding the gun to his temple in a TikTok video.
  • April 2020 : 22 year-old man died after being hit by a train, while performing a TikTok challenge at the Jumma Goth railway station.
  • March 2020 : a policeman was accidentally shot and killed while trying to snatch his gun back from a female friend who took his gun to film her TikTok video
  • December 2019 : 16 year-old boy accidentally shot himself while recording a TikTok video.

Considering PUBG was recently suspended after a student committed suicide, it seems likely that Pakistan may be forced to order a suspension of TikTok after this student’s death.

Recommended : India Bans 59 Chinese Apps, Including TikTok and WeChat!

Should TikTok be held responsible for these deaths? Arguably, they have to consider if it is really smart to allow videos of people showing off and shooting guns on a short video platform that many children and teenagers use unsupervised.

There is no age check so anyone can watch those videos, irrespective of how young they are. Heck, you don’t even need an account to watch!

TikTok Controversies Keep Piling Up!

While TikTok is very popular with children and teenagers, it keeps getting wracked by controversies, some of its own doing.

It was caught spying on what we type in other apps, not once but TWICE. Coupled with Chinese belligerence in the Himalayas, that led to India banning TikTok together with 58 other Chinese apps.

Its penchant for promoting TikTok challenges led to deaths and injuries from the Skull Breaker / Tripping Jump Challenge.

Recommended : Skull Breaker Challenge Continues To Injure Children!

More recently, it powered the George Floyd Challenge, which was not only extremely racist but also dangerous for children to imitate.

TikTok Reverse-Engineered : A Peek At How It Works!

TikTok is getting exposed as a really bad piece of malware, and it doesn’t help when people like bangarlol claim to have reverse-engineered it, giving us a peek at how it all works!

TikTok : Controversies After Controversies

TikTok is a Chinese social networking service built around short video clips. Developed and owned by ByteDance which is based in Beijing, it is very popular amongst young people and even children.

This has led to numerous controversies as TikTok proved slow or reluctant to remove dangerous or racist videos :

TikTok has also been dogged by accusations of snooping on users, but that got serious recently, when they were caught twice spying on what we typed, followed by a ban by the Indian government.

TikTok Reverse-Engineered : A Peek At How It Works!

bangorlol, who claims to reverse-engineer apps for a living, claimed to have figured out how TikTok worked, and what it was “harvesting” from its users.

Data Harvesting Gone Mad?

He warned that TikTok is a “data collection service” that is “essentially malware that is targeting children“, collecting everything they can get their hands on, even data unnecessary for the features they offer.

  • other apps that you installed, even those you deleted!
  • everything on your network, including network configuration and devices!
  • your GPS location – roughly once every 30 seconds!

This data collection is so critical that the TikTok app is disabled if you block communications to their data analytics host at the DNS level.

What You Don’t Know Can’t Hurt You?

The TikTok app itself is specially designed to obfuscate (make it difficult to figure out) what they are really doing.

The First Taste Of Fame…

According to bangorlol, the TikTok service will entice you by letting your first post get more likes, giving you a taste of going viral.

This will hopefully hook you into using their app, which would lead to more users as your friends will want to join in too.

Remote Payload?

bangorlol found code that allows for the downloading of a remote file, unzipping it and then executing the binary – something no legitimate app will ever do.

Can’t Be Bothered With SSL But Encrypt The Data They Collect?

Apparently, TikTok has not been using SSL (HTTPS) for a long time, leaking user email addresses through their HTTP REST API, as well as the real names and birthdays of their users.

Yet they took the effort to encrypt all of the data they collect from their users, even changing the encryption keys with every update, so you don’t know what they’re collecting.

TikTok Reverse-Engineered : The Full bangorlol Post

For those who want to read bangorlol’s full post, here it is :

I reverse-engineered the app, and feel confident in stating that I have a very strong understanding for how the app operates (or at least operated as of a few months ago).

TikTok is a data collection service that is thinly-veiled as a social network. If there is an API to get information on you, your contacts, or your device… well, they’re using it.

  • Phone hardware (cpu type, number of course, hardware ids, screen dimensions, dpi, memory usage, disk space, etc)
  • Other apps you have installed (I’ve even seen some I’ve deleted show up in their analytics payload – maybe using as cached value?)
  • Everything network-related (ip, local ip, router mac, your mac, wifi access point name)
  • Whether or not you’re rooted/jailbroken
  • Some variants of the app had GPS pinging enabled at the time, roughly once every 30 seconds – this is enabled by default if you ever location-tag a post IIRC
  • They set up a local proxy server on your device for “transcoding media”, but that can be abused very easily as it has zero authentication

The scariest part of all of this is that much of the logging they’re doing is remotely configurable, and unless you reverse every single one of their native libraries (have fun reading all of that assembly, assuming you can get past their customized fork of OLLVM!!!) and manually inspect every single obfuscated function. They have several different protections in place to prevent you from reversing or debugging the app as well. App behavior changes slightly if they know you’re trying to figure out what they’re doing. There’s also a few snippets of code on the Android version that allows for the downloading of a remote zip file, unzipping it, and executing said binary. There is zero reason a mobile app would need this functionality legitimately.

On top of all of the above, they weren’t even using HTTPS for the longest time. They leaked users’ email addresses in their HTTP REST API, as well as their secondary emails used for password resets. Don’t forget about users’ real names and birthdays, too. It was allllll publicly viewable a few months ago if you MITM’d the application.

They provide users with a taste of “virality” to entice them to stay on the platform. Your first TikTok post will likely garner quite a bit of likes, regardless of how good it is.. assuming you get past the initial moderation queue if thats still a thing. Most users end up chasing the dragon. Oh, there’s also a ton of creepy old men who have direct access to children on the app, and I’ve personally seen (and reported) some really suspect stuff. 40-50 year old men getting 8-10 year old girls to do “duets” with them with sexually suggestive songs. Those videos are posted publicly. TikTok has direct messaging functionality.

Here’s the thing though.. they don’t want you to know how much information they’re collecting on you, and the security implications of all of that data in one place, en masse, are fucking huge. They encrypt all of the analytics requests with an algorithm that changes with every update (at the very least the keys change) just so you can’t see what they’re doing. They also made it so you cannot use the app at all if you block communication to their analytics host off at the DNS-level.

For what it’s worth I’ve reversed the Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter apps. They don’t collect anywhere near the same amount of data that TikTok does, and they sure as hell aren’t outright trying to hide exactly whats being sent like TikTok is. It’s like comparing a cup of water to the ocean – they just don’t compare.

tl;dr; I’m a nerd who figures out how apps work for a job. Calling it an advertising platform is an understatement. TikTok is essentially malware that is targeting children. Don’t use TikTok. Don’t let your friends and family use it.

TikTok Caught Spying What We Type In Other Apps… TWICE!

TikTok was caught spying on what we type in other apps, not once, but TWICE… so far.

Find out what’s going on, and what you should do about it!

TikTok : What Is It?

TikTok is a Chinese social networking service built around short video clips. Developed and owned by ByteDance which is based in Beijing, it is very popular amongst young people and even children.

This has led to numerous controversies as TikTok proved slow or reluctant to remove dangerous or racist videos :

TikTok Caught Spying What We Type In Other Apps… TWICE!

Beyond their obvious desire to grow their service at the expense of the danger to real people, there have been cybersecurity and privacy concerns about TikTok.

In a space of just four months, TikTok has been caught spying on what we type in OTHER APPS… not once, but TWICE. Take a look at this video expose…

TikTok Caught Spying On What We Type : First Time

Let’s start in March 2020, when Talal Has Bakry and Tommy Mysk exposed how they found that TikTok was spying on what we typed in other apps through the pasteboard / clipboard.

In the video above, you can see how TikTok immediately asked to read all text stored in the pasteboard, whenever it is launched.

The pasteboard contains everything you copied earlier – messages from other people, quotes from an article, or far more sensitive stuff like your password or account number.

And because of Apple’s universal clipboard feature, this means everything you copy on your Mac or iPad will be available on your iPhone, and therefore TikTok.

To be clear, TikTok was just one of the many apps that they found to be spying on what we type. Here were the apps they confirmed were spying on the pasteboard / clipboard.

At that time, TikTok told Zak Doffman that it was Google Ads that was snooping into the pasteboard / clipboard.

The clipboard access issues showed up due to third-party SDKs, in our case an older version Google Ads SDK. We are in the processes of updating so that the third-party SDK will no longer have access.

They claimed it was because TikTok was using an older Google Ads SDK, which they have since replaced with a newer version.

TikTok Caught Spying On What We Type : Second Time

BFast forward to June, and the release of iOS 14 beta. The new clipboard warning feature in iOS 14 appears to have caught TikTok spying on the pasteboard / clipboard once again.

In the dramatic video shared by Jeremy Burge – the 1:35 point in our video above – he shows TikTok grabbing the contents of his iPhone’s clipboard every 1-3 keystrokes, as he typed in Instagram!

This is even more egregious than the first time they spied on the pasteboard / clipboard! Instead of just looking at what you copied into the clipboard earlier, TikTok is literally reading what you are typing in a different app!

TikTok now claims that this issue was “triggered by a feature designed to identify repetitive, spammy behaviour“, and that they have already submitted an updated app without this “anti-spam feature“.

TikTok Caught Spying : What Should YOU Do?

If you are not a frequent TikTok user, the answer is simple – UNINSTALL TikTok.

If you really like TikTok, you should immediately update to the latest version, which ByteDance claims will no longer read your clipboard because it has both an updated Google Ads SDK, as well as their anti-spam feature removed.

Either way, if you are concerned about privacy issues with TikTok, you should write to privacy@tiktok.com and express your deep concerns about not letting them read what you are typing, whether it is in their app or other apps.

Ryde Introduces RydePool Car Pooling Service In Malaysia!

Ryde, the number one carpool app in Singapore, is introducing the RydePool car pooling service in Malaysia!

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about Ryde and their RydePool service, as well as their upcoming RydeCity feature!

An Introduction To Ryde + RydePool

Ryde was started by Singaporean financier Terence Zou in 2015, to encourage carpooling as a greener and more convenient transportation option.

Using its in-app request and matching technology, the RydePool service matches drivers on a particular route with commuters hoping to hitch a ride along the same route.

Unlike other ride-hailing apps, Ryde allows both advanced and on-demand bookings for RydePool, so drivers and riders can better plan their journey.

In addition, RydePool fares are based on a not-for-profit model, where riders pay for the cost contribution of the trip, taking into consideration the distance travelled, petrol, toll and car depreciation costs.

Ryde Introduces RydePool Car Pooling Service In Malaysia!

After becoming the number one carpool app in Singapore, Ryde is expanding globally, with Malaysia as their first step. They plan to introduce Ryde to Sydney in 2020, and Hong Kong after that.

Ryde officially launched the Ryde app and RydePool carpooling service today (16 October 2019) in the Klang Valley, with plans to eventually roll it out to other major Malaysian cities like Johor, Penang and Melaka.

You can download the Ryde app and sign up to be a driver or rider starting today, but the RydePool service will only kick off on 1 November 2019.

Ryde is currently offering drivers zero commission fares, which means the driver gets to pocket 100% of their fares to offset their driving expenses.

Later, Ryde may introduce commission rate (currently 9% in Singapore), although they are looking to monetise in other ways, like advertising and partnerships with multinational companies.

Ryde + RydePool Availability

The Ryde app is available for downloads and sign-ups from 16 October 2019 onwards, from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

The RydePool service will begin on 1 November 2019.

iOS 11 Has A New Secret Ability To Quickly Disable Touch ID

Apple just released iOS 11, and hidden amongst its many new features is a new secret ability to quickly disable Touch ID. We will share with you the details of this new feature, and why you should learn how to use it.

How To Quickly Disable Touch ID

Note : This method only works with iOS 11. If you are using an older iPhone, you must upgrade to iOS 11 first.

To quickly disable Touch ID, rapidly tap the Power button five times.

This temporarily disables Touch ID, and displays the Emergency Services screen, where you can dial 911 / 999 without unlocking the iPhone.

Touch ID is disabled only until you enter your Passcode. Authenticating yourself using the Passcode re-enables Touch ID.

This new method beats the previous methods that include using five different fingers on Touch ID to lock it out, or disabling it in the settings.

Why Should You Learn How To Disable Touch ID?

[adrotate group=”2″]

Everyone should learn how to use this method to quickly disable Touch ID. Why?

First of all, it is a great security feature. It prevents someone from forcibly using your fingerprint to gain access to your iPhone.

The most obvious candidates of such a dastardly act would be oppressive governments and law enforcement officers who don’t care for civil rights. But it could also be a robber or a suspicious spouse.

If you can quickly disable Touch ID, they will need you to key in your Passcode. No amount of forcing you to touch your fingers against the Touch ID sensor will gain them access to your iPhone.

Why Apple iPhones Are So Expensive Rev. 2.0

Whenever Apple releases a new iPhone, it has become tradition for rabid Apple and Android fans to trade barbs in a childish display of fandom rivalry. Facebook and blogs will be replete with taunts and jeers on both sides. It was not good enough that they didn’t like the rival platform, they had to make sure the other side knew how much they hated their platform. Check out some of their work when Apple launched their new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones :

Now that Apple has officially announced the iPhone 7, there is a new comparison out :

Of course, the comparison is hardly accurate, since the Nexus 6 is not water-resistant, just splash-resistant. The iPhone 7, on the other hand, has IP67-rated water resistance. It is also a fact that Apple iPhones have always lagged Android smartphones in features and specifications. In fact, Apple iPhones will always cost more… often far more, than an equivalent Android smartphone.

Updated @ 2016-09-13 : Updated the article for Apple iPhone 7, including new information on Apple iPhones and Android smartphones.

Updated @ 2016-01-26 : Ported it over to the new Tech ARP

Originally posted @ 2014-11-24

Apple iPhones Will Always Cost More

Frankly, the differences between an Apple iPhone and an Android smartphone have diminished in recent years, with both platforms borrowing features and ideas from each other. Arguing about who came up with which feature first will become nothing more than a pissing contest.

Whatever features that are unique to a particular platform will eventually be introduced in the competing platform. That’s what we want because it gives us the freedom to choose between the two platform without worrying about losing some key features we cannot do without.

Even so, one thing will remain certain – Apple will always price their iPhone models at a premium. That brings us to arguably the most vitriolic opinion that Android fans have about the Apple users – that they are all rich idiots who are getting fleeced by Apple into paying a ridiculously high price for the iPhones especially since they are using “dated” hardware or “older technology”.

Well, we are not going to go into why Apple iPhones are not using “dated” hardware or “older technology” in this editorial, but we are going to address this perception that Apple users are stupid to pay so much money for a smartphone. Then we are going to show you why Apple iPhones are so expensive.

Why Pay So Much For An iPhone?

Let’s take a look at the top 3 reasons why Apple users are willing to pay top dollar for their Apple iPhones.

1. It’s More Than Just A Smartphone

First of all, the Apple iPhone is more than just a smartphone. When you purchase an Apple iPhone, you are purchasing the iPhone ecosystem as well – everything from access to the 2.0 million apps (as of June 2016) in the Apple App Store to the free iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud services. Android users may argue that they have similar features but what they have is sometimes a pale shadow of what the Apple iOS platform currently offers.

For example, the Apple iPhone can automatically and continuously back itself up to iCloud since October 2011 with iOS 5. If something bad happens, the user can restore the entire contents of the iPhone using nothing more than an Internet connection. You don’t even need to use iTunes on a computer to perform this backup and/or restore process.

When we first wrote this editorial 3 years later in 2014, no Android smartphone could do that. Of course, we had no doubt even then that they would eventually implement something similar.  True enough, Android 6.0 Marshmallow introduced such an ability in October 2015 (4 years after iOS), although it only works with Android apps that “target API version 23“.

2. It’s About Software Assurance

[adrotate group=”2″]

You are also buying “software assurance” in the form of iOS upgrades and updates. The recently released iOS 10, for example, was made available for the following devices, immediately and simultaneously :

Google also releases Android upgrades on a periodical basis. However, those upgrades are not made available for many Android smartphones (even if they are of the same generation), and often, they are made available long after Google releases them.

This is due to the fact that the Android platform is “highly fragmented” – there is a wide variation in hardware features and packaged software, as well as manufacturer preferences. This has resulted in significantly slower or shorter “software assurance”, especially for older or less popular models.

Google released Android 6.0 Marshmallow on October 5, 2015. It took Samsung 4 months to start releasing it for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge smartphones. ASUS also took 4 months to start rolling out their Marshmallow update for the ZenFone 2 Laser and ZenFone Zoom smartphones. That’s actually fast, because in the past, they would take about twice as long to release a major operating system update.

Of course, many brands choose not to offer the upgrade at all. Some, like HTC, promise an Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade for several smartphones, but remain stuck in development hell. The Marshmallow upgrade for the HTC One M7 was even scrapped, after being announced. In the meantime, Android 7.0 Nougat was just released…

3. It’s The Apple Experience

When someone considers the cost of a platform, it should be done holistically because when you buy an Apple iPhone, you are really buying an experience.

Apple iPhone users (generally) want a smartphone that “just works“. They do not care so much about specifications, as much as they do the experience of using the iPhone. They do not care so much about the number of features, as they do the experience of those features that are available. For that, they are willing to pay top dollar.

The less fragmented nature of the iOS platform also makes it very easy for them to transition from one model to another. The user interface and apps work exactly the same, whether you’re using the new iPhone 7, or the much older iPhone 5.

The Android platform allows for a customisable experience, but Apple fans don’t really want that. Or at least they are willing to sacrifice that for the familiarity of a consistent user interface.

Now, let us show you exactly what they are paying so much for. The real reasons why Apple iPhones are so expensive…

Why Apple iPhones Are So Expensive

Many people consider Apple elitist for selling the iPhone at very high prices, and there’s no doubt that they have the highest profit margin in the industry. However, their profit margin isn’t an accurate reflection of their nett profit per unit.

What most people forget is that the price of each iPhone includes a lot of ancillary costs, so comparing the profit margin of Apple iPhones vs. Android smartphones is like comparing apples to oranges (pun intended).

1. Apple iOS And Services Are Not Free

Android manufacturers can get away with low margins and therefore, lower prices, because Google provides the Android OS free of charge. On top of that, Google finances the infrastructure for free services that they provide to the Android platform, like Google Hangout and Google Drive.

With the exception of any custom software or services provided by the Android smartphone manufacturer, everything on the Android platform is being financed and maintained by Google.

Apple, on the other hand, has development teams working on the iOS operating system, as well as supporting software and services like iTunes, the App Store, iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud. They also build and maintain their own infrastructure to support those services.

All that comes at significant cost. Apple’s massive 500,000 sf data center in Maiden, North Carolina, for example, costs a whooping US$ 1 billion to build.

2. Apple Uses Their Own Processors

Apple designs their own processors for the iPhone – a cost that no Android manufacturer has to bear. On top of that, their processors cost more to make because they have a lower production run than the Qualcomm or MediaTek processors that most Android devices use.

3. They Just Cost More To Produce

All-in-all, the costs of the parts used to make an iPhone are consistently much higher than that of an Android phone. Here’s what research firm HIS calculated as the cost of manufacturing the iPhone 6 :

Apple iPhone 6 with 16GB of built-in memory costs $200 to build in parts and labor, while a 128GB model requires $247 to put together. The iPhone 6 Plus production costs on the other hand, range between $216 for a 16GB model and $263 for the 128GB version.

The most expensive component in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is their display. Made by LG Display and Japan Display, the component costs $45 for the iPhone 6, and $52.50 for the iPhone 6 Plus. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 covers the screen of both models.

Apple’s 20nm A8 processor is made by TSMC and, combined with an attached co-processor, costs about $20. NXP Semiconductors provides the NFC chip for the iPhone 6 range. Combined with the rest of its built-in sensors, it costs $22 for both devices.

As you can see, the production cost of the Apple iPhone 6 is higher than what some Android smartphones are selling for, even if those Android smartphones have similar or even better specifications on paper. This is why the iPhone will always be more expensive than comparable Android smartphones, even if Apple somehow sees it fit to sell it at cost.

If you tack on their substantial ancillary costs, you can see why Apple has to sell their iPhones at a premium. The research firm HIS calculated the iPhone 6‘s profit margin as 69%, but that does not include ancillary costs. Apple’s nett profit is certainly much lower once you factor everything in, albeit still much higher than the industry norm.

Does This Mean That Apple iPhones Are Better?

[adrotate group=”2″]

No. I’ve said it many times before, and I will say it again. Both platforms have their pros and cons, and they are getting closer in capability as they leapfrog each other in features. Whatever new idea or feature that’s introduced in one platform will eventually make it to the other platform, so it would be stupid to insist that one platform is significantly superior to the other.

It is this convergence of features and capability that will eventually limit Apple’s reach. If you can get a good Android smartphone with all of the key features you need at a much lower cost, it will be harder for many users to justify paying a premium for the Apple experience.

Ultimately, it all depends on the kind of user you are, and how much you are willing to pay. You won’t go wrong with either platform, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Just because Apple iPhones are so expensive does not mean they are better than Android smartphones. But it doesn’t mean you are not getting your money’s worth either.

Catch ‘Em All Faster With The PokeMobile!

Update @ 2016-08-07 : Pokémon GO was officially launched in Malaysia yesterday, so the PokeMobiles will be roaming the streets of the Klang Valley, ferrying Pokémon GO players to nearby PokeStops. Go book one right now!

Catch ‘Em All Faster With The PokeMobile!

Malaysians have heard that the Pokémon GO launch is imminent. Everyone’s raring to go out and catch ’em all! In their eagerness, some will probably get hurt… especially if they are thinking of driving out to hunt for Pokémons.

To help Malaysians hunt Pokémons safely, Grab and Hotlink just launched the limited-edition PokeMobile! Let’s see what the fuss is all about!

Grab & Hotlink Launches The PokeMobile

In this video, Maybel Chan (Maxis’ Head of Content & Engagement), and Jaygan Fu (Grab Malaysia’s Country Manager), officially launch the PokeMobile promotion.

Followed by a Q&A session…

The PokeMobile Revealed!

These are special Grab cars that have been decked out in Pokémon livery. Each PokeMobile also comes with refreshments, Grab goodie bags, Hotlink PokeChargers and even a PokeMonitor, with Hotlink 4G connectivity.

A total of four PokeMobiles will ply the Klang Valley, shuttling Pokémon GO players to nearby PokeStops, over the first two days. Best of all – IT’S ALL FREE!

To book a PokeMobile for a free ride to the nearest PokeStop, Pokémon GO players have to do is :
  • Install / upgrade the Grab app (available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store)
  • Select the PokeMobile button in the Grab app, and wait for your pickup!

If that’s not enough, PokeMobile riders who are also Hotlink customers will receive US$100 worth of PokeCoins via Hotlink Cash Online. This is equivalent to 14,500 PokeCoins! Of course, you can also use those PokeCoins to purchase 145 Pokémon lures, 145 Pokéballs or 96 egg incubators.

In addition, Hotlink customers will get 10% off their PokeCoins purchased through Hotlink Cash Online. They will also get 10% off in-app purchases on other games and apps like Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Smule, Loong Craft, Crisis Action, Candy Crush Saga, etc. on Google Play Store.

Is Pokémon GO Launching In Malaysia Tomorrow?

Everyone is crazy about Pokémon GO, including Malaysians who have been waiting impatiently for it to be released in Malaysia. They have been disappointed time and time again by rumours that Pokémon GO is going to be launched. Will they be disappointed again?

Grab ‘Em All Faster with Hotlink

This morning, we received a special invitation from Maxis. Oddly enough, it’s for tomorrow morning! Such a short notice is often a sign that something special is coming up. A short notice is often used to prevent leaks – the fewer people know about it, the less likely the information will be leaked.

The invitation was enticingly titled “Grab ‘Em All Faster with Hotlink“, with this accompanying graphic :

There is no doubt that this Maxis event is about Pokémon GO. This has led many to speculate that this is a sign that Pokémon GO is launching in Malaysia tomorrow. Why else would Maxis resort to emailing the media about this event on a Sunday morning?

Find out all about the PokeMobile promotion that Grab and Hotlink announced today!

Pokémon GO Update

Speculation of an impending launch was also based on the major Pokémon GO update that was released just yesterday. That update came with the following changes / improvements :

  • players can now re-customise their character
  • Pokémon move sets have been rebalanced
  • some spawn points have been changed
  • your favourite Pokémon can be locked to prevent accidental transfers
  • the footstep tracking feature has been removed, eliminating the 3-step bug
  • the scan radius has been reduced

The theory is that Niantic will want to fix the major bugs before launching in new regions. The removal of the footstep tracking feature, in particular, is useful in reducing server load. That would be something Niantic would be eager to fix before launching the game in new countries.

Is Pokémon GO Launching In Malaysia Tomorrow?

[adrotate banner=”4″]

Unfortunately, we do NOT think Pokémon GO will be launching in Malaysia tomorrow. After carefully reading the Maxis invitation, we highlight two important key points :

  • The event title – “Grab ‘Em All Faster with Hotlink
  • The event is described as “a special preview

In our humble opinion, Maxis is probably just announcing a future promotion to capitalise on the Pokémon GO craze. Most likely, they will be partnering with Grab to offer free rides for Pokémon GO gamers to Pokestops.

In any case, stay tuned tomorrow morning for our live coverage on the Tech ARP Facebook page.

When Is Pokémon GO Launching In Malaysia?

The urgency of this announcement though is odd. It could mean that a Pokémon GO launch is imminent.

MMO Server Status actually lists Malaysia’s Pokémon GO servers as going live in 25 hours, together with Pokémon GO servers in Israel, China, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela and South Korea.

Thanks for the heads-up, Joshua Wong from The Ideal Mobile!

A cached page also revealed that Grab will offer Hotlink users FREE rides to the nearest Pokestops between 10 AM and 7 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday (August 2 and 3). This is definitely a sign that Pokémon GO is probably launching on Tuesday!

Travellers Rejoice! WorldKoins Is Here To Take Your Change!

One of the most irritating aspect of travelling is ending up with loose change at the end of the trip. Money changers just won’t take them, so they end up in jars or at the bottom of your drawer. With an average of 10 million people flying internationally every single day, millions of dollars are literally “lost” every day!

Fortunately, the solution is at hand, and it’s called WorldKoins.

What Is WorldKoins?

WorldKoins is a new crowdsourced service that allows you to convert your unwanted change into credit that can be used to redeem gift cards, vouchers or even donate to worthy causes.

At the end of your trip, just drop all of your change with any nearby DropKoins collector. This way, you will go home with usable credit, instead of unusable change. It’s that simple!

How Does WorldKoins Work?

  1. Download and install the free WorldKoins mobile app from Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
  2. Open the app and create a new WorldKoins account, or sign in (if you have already registered before).
  3. Use the WorldKoins mobile app to locate and contact nearby DropKoins collectors.
  4. Drop off your leftover change with your preferred DropKoins collector.
  5. The DropKoins collector will validate your transaction on the spot with a verification code.
  6. Your account is credited immediately, and you now make redemptions.

If you do not have sufficient credit to make redemptions, you will be glad to know that the credit have no “expiry date”. Just accumulate until you have enough to make redemptions!

Free Thought Project Looks Silly After iPhone Hack Claim

Conspiracy theory website, The Free Thought Project, got trolled by SoFlo when that notorious Facebook content thief posted his iPhone hack hoax. Not only did they fall for his hoax, they crowed about how “the FBI looks silly now”. Well, it looks like they will have to eat crow now!

The Free Thought Project Thinks The FBI Is Silly

We debunked SoFlo’s hoax back on March 6, 2016 –  BEFORE The Free Thought Project posted their piece on the “SoFlo iPhone hack”. We not only posted a debunking video, we also posted a proof video, which we shared on SoFlo’s YouTube and Facebook posts, and as many places as we could. Check them out here :

Yet, Matt Agorist, who calls himself “an independent journalist… (who) has been featured in mainstream networks around the world“, did not bother to verify the claim before posting his piece. Instead, he jumped on it as evidence that the FBI was pretending to have trouble cracking Apple iOS’s built-in encryption. He even crowed about it, calling the FBI “silly“. Take a look for yourself :

If Matt had only done a quick Google or YouTube search, he would have found our debunking article or videos in less than 5 seconds. But no, an experienced “journalist” like Matt Agorist has no need to fact-check.

I suppose he was trained in the “I will just wing it on my gut feelings!” School of Journalism, or “Trust your feelings…” College of Journalism. Guess who looks silly now?

The SoFlo iPhone Hack Debunked

Let us give Matt and the Free Thought Project a short briefing on the fake SoFlo iPhone hack. For the full details, you can read our two-page article here.

  1. The fake SoFlo iPhone hack was based on a flawed demonstration of the iOS 9 Siri bug from September 16, 2015. It would never have worked the way he demonstrated it.
  2. That iOS 9 bug required Siri to be enabled. If Siri is disabled, the bug cannot be exploited and is completely irrelevant.
  3. A successful exploit of the Siri bug only allowed access to the Contact List and Photo Library. It did not allowed access to the Home screen, or other areas of the iPhone.
  4. The iOS 9 Siri bug was fixed a week later, on September 23, 2015.
  5. By the time the San Bernardino attack happened on December 2, 2015, iOS 9 had already been patched 3 times. Either one of those 3 patches would have closed the iOS 9 bug.
  6. The iPhone 5c used by the San Bernardino shooter, Syed Rizwan Farook, is the same model we used in our proof video. Once it’s patched, it’s impossible to get in using the bug exploit.

Perhaps Matt or the Free Through Project will retract his article, or post a correction? Nah, we didn’t think so. Conspiracy theorists are never wrong. Their mistakes are really just another conspiracy to shut them up.

Incidentally, while disproving the SoFlo iPhone unlocking hoax, we stumbled upon a Clock Share security bug in iOS 9.2.1, which could be used to bypass the iOS device’s passcode or Touch ID. We, of course, reported it to Apple and it was fixed in iOS 9.3.

AceDeceiver : First iOS Trojan Exploits Apple DRM Design

Palo Alto Networks discovered a new family of iOS malware that successfully infected non-jailbroken devices. They’ve named it “AceDeceiver”.

What makes AceDeceiver different from previous iOS malware is that instead of abusing enterprise certificates as some iOS malware has over the past two years, AceDeceiver manages to install itself without any enterprise certificate at all. It does so by exploiting design flaws in Apple’s DRM mechanism, and even as Apple has removed AceDeceiver from App Store, it may still spread thanks to a novel attack vector.

AceDeceiver is the first iOS malware they’ve seen that abuses certain design flaws in Apple’s DRM protection mechanism — namely FairPlay — to install malicious apps on iOS devices regardless of whether they are jailbroken. This technique is called “FairPlay Man-In-The-Middle (MITM)” and has been used since 2013 to spread pirated iOS apps, but this is the first time they’ve seen it used to spread malware.

Note : The FairPlay MITM attack technique was also presented at the USENIX Security Symposium in 2014; however, attacks using this technique are still occurring successfully.

AceDeceiver Sneaks Into App Store

Three different iOS apps in the AceDeceiver family were uploaded to the official App Store between July 2015 and February 2016, and all of them claimed to be wallpaper apps.

These apps successfully bypassed Apple’s code review at least seven times (including the first time each was uploaded and then four rounds of code updates, which require an additional review by Apple for each instance) using a method similar to that used by ZergHelper, where the app tailors its behavior based on the physical geographic region in which it’s being executed.

In this case, AceDeceiver only displays malicious behaviors when a user is located in China, but that would be easy for the attacker to change in any time.

Apple removed these three apps from the App Store after we reported them in late February 2016. However, the attack is still viable because the FairPlay MITM attack only requires these apps to have been available in the App Store once. As long as an attacker could get a copy of authorization from Apple, the attack doesn’t require current App Store availability to spread those apps.

How AceDeceiver Works

To carry out the attack, the author created a Windows client called ”爱思助手 (Aisi Helper)” to perform the FairPlay MITM attack. Aisi Helper purports to be software that provides services for iOS devices such as system re-installation, jailbreaking, system backup, device management and system cleaning.

[adrotate banner=”5″]

But what it’s also doing is surreptitiously installing the malicious apps on any iOS device that is connected to the PC on which Aisi Helper is installed. (Of note, only the most recent app is installed on the iOS device(s) at the time of infection, not all three at the same time.) These malicious iOS apps provide a connection to a third party app store controlled by the author for user to download iOS apps or games.

It encourages users to input their Apple IDs and passwords for more features, and provided these credentials will be uploaded to AceDeceiver’s C2 server after being encrypted. We also identified some earlier versions of AceDeceiver that had enterprise certificates dated March 2015.

Clock Share Bug In iOS Allows Access To Data

While proving the SoFlo iPhone unlocking hoax, we stumbled upon a security bug in iOS 9.2.1. This security bug can be used to bypass the iOS device’s passcode or Touch ID. But it has to be done in a very specific way.

How To Exploit This Bug In iOS

Here is how you can exploit the bug in iOS 9.2.1 to gain access to every photo, video and contact stored in the iOS device, whether it is an iPhone, an iPad or an iPod touch.

  1. Log into the iOS device using the passcode / Touch ID.
  2. Open the Clock app and go to World Clock, and add a new Clock.
  3. Type a random word in the Search bar.
  4. Select the random word and tap to Share as a Message.

  1. Once the New Message screen opens, turn off the iOS device.
  2. Call Siri (without logging in using Touch ID / passcode) and ask for the time
  3. Click on the Clock after Siri tells you the time.
  4. Siri will not open up the World Clock, but will take you straight into New Message.
  5. Now add a random word to “To:” bar, and press Return.
  6. Double tap on the random word (now green in colour). It will bring you to the Info screen.
  7. Tap on Create New Contact.
  8. Tap on Add Photo. This will allow you to access the Photos app and EVERY photo and video in the iOS device.
  9. You can also tap on Add to Existing Contact to access the entire Contact List.

[adrotate banner=”5″]

Don’t Worry… Too Much

As you can tell by now, this security bug is very hard for a hacker to exploit. It requires prior access to the iOS device to “set up” the exploit.

The hacker will have to trick the owner into granting access to the iOS device. Then the hacker can follow the steps above up to no. 5. This will allow the hacker to exploit the bug (at a later time) to gain access to the iOS device’s photos, videos and contacts.

While this is a remote possibility, we nevertheless reported the security bug to Apple :

We then tested to see if the exploit would work on iOS 9.3 beta, and discovered something interesting.

It appears that Apple finally decided that it was superfluous to offer a Share option in the Clock app. How is that functionality useful to the user? It’s practically useless. So they removed the Share option completely.

In other words, even if you are logged into the iOS device, you can no longer go to the Clock app, key in a random word and Share it. The option is gone. As far as we can tell, it was gone as early as iOS 9.3 beta 5. We confirmed this in iOS 9.3 beta 6 as well (naturally).

So don’t worry too much. The coming iOS 9.3 update will fix this security bug in iOS 9.2.1 once and for all. In the meantime, just be careful who you lend your iOS device to!

LINE Introduces New Group Call Feature

March 14, 2016LINE Corporation today announced the addition of a new group call feature to the latest version of the LINE app (iPhone and Android v.5.11, and Windows Desktop v.4.5), enabling users to participate in voice calls within their group or multiple person chats.

LINE was released in June 2011 as a group communications service available across multiple devices and network carriers, enabling users around the world to easily keep in touch with friends, family, and coworkers. It launched its free voice call service in October of the same year, and video calls in September 2013, all in an effort to improve the lines of communication between people.

Today, with the release of LINE 5.11 for iPhone and Android, LINE now includes support for voice calls within groups or multiple person chats. The group feature update is also supported on LINE Windows desktop version (v.4.5.)

Free Group Call

The feature offers free voice chats with up to 200 people. Calls can be initiated from within group chats or multiple person chats, and a notification message will be sent to all of the users participating in the chat. The number of people currently participating in the call can also be confirmed from within the chat. An icon is displayed above the user icon of the person currently speaking at the time, enabling users to easily communicate with each other.

The group call feature can be utilized for no charge as long as the user has the LINE app installed, allowing easy communication with a worldwide community of users. The service is perfect for catching up with friends and family, and also for use at work for important conference calls. The possibilities are endless with this tool designed to eliminate the traditional barriers to effective group communication.

[adrotate banner=”5″]

“We are constantly innovating the way our users communicate with their friends and family, and this new feature provides an additional way for our users to be closer to their friends and family. At every update we look towards refining the experience to keep up with our users’ needs and demands,” said SunHaeng Cho, the lead planner for group call.

In addition to the new group call feature, the LINE version 5.11 also has a redesigned More screen. The layout of the menu icons in the user interface has been modified for increased visibility and an even greater user experience. The new layout is available for both Android and iOS.

LINE Corporation will continue to develop new features and services and enhance existing ones in order to make it easier for users to communicate around the world.
