AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO : What Is It?

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO is a new HEDT processor family, mirroring what Ryzen PRO is to Ryzen.

Unlike the Ryzen Threadripper, the Threadripper PRO is targeted at professional studios, designers, engineers and data scientists.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO series will offer these features over “regular” Threadripper processors.

  • new sWRX8 socket and WRX80 chipset
  • 8 DDR4-3200 memory channels, instead of just 4
  • 2X memory bandwidth over 3rd Gen Threadripper
  • Support for UDIMM, RDIMM, LDRIMM, 3DS RDIMM with ECC support, instead of just UDIMM with ECC
  • Up to 2 TB of memory, instead of just 256 GB
  • 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, instead of just 64
  • AMD PRO Technologies, including Secure Processor and Memory Guard
  • 18 months of planned software stability
  • 24 months of planned availability

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO : Available Models

As of today’s launch, AMD is launching only these four processor models :

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX

This is the flagship, with 64 cores capable of processing up to 128 threads simultaneously. It comes with 288 MB of L2 and L3 caches, a 2.7 GHz base clock and a 4.2 GHz boost clock, with a 280 W TDP.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3975WX

This processor has 32 cores with the ability to process up to 64 threads simultaneously. It comes with 144 MB of L2 and L3 caches, a 3.5 GHz base clock and a 4.2 GHz boost clock, with a 280 W TDP.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3955WX

This processor has 16 cores with the ability to process up to 32 threads simultaneously. It comes with 72 MB of L2 and L3 caches, a 3.9 GHz base clock and a 4.3 GHz boost clock, with a 280 W TDP.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3945WX

This processor has 12 cores with the ability to process up to 24 threads simultaneously. It comes with 70 MB of L2 and L3 caches, a 4.0 GHz base clock and a 4.3 GHz boost clock, with a 280 W TDP.

There Is No Threadripper PRO 3965WX

Although earlier rumoured, this 24-core, 48-thread processor will not be released, at least not on 14 July 2020.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO : Performance

Threadripper PRO 3945WX

According to AMD, the “baby” of the family will offer 12% better single-threaded performance in CINEBENCH R20, and 28% better multi-threaded performance than a competing 12-core Intel Xeon processor.

They say that this is targeted at those whose software is licensed on a per-core basis. Its high performance per core will allow for better performance, without resorting to more cores and corresponding licence fees.

Threadripper PRO 3955WX

AMD also showed how the 16-core 3955WX can render 14% faster than an 18-core Intel Xeon processor.

Threadripper PRO 3995WX

AMD compared the flagship Threadripper PRO 3995WX with its 64 cores against two Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 processors, with 56 cores.

In the SPECviewperf13 benchmark, that 8-core, 16-thread advantage gave the 3995WX a performance advantage between 4% and 37%.

Thanks to their work with the RED Digital Cinema team, AMD has some advice on what we can do to optimise for 64 cores.

AMD demonstrated that it not only handily trounces the Xeon W-3275 processor – Intel’s best single-chip processor, it also handily beat the two Xeon Platinum 8280 processors!

To keep all 64 cores humming, every core has 512 KB of L2 cache, with a super large 256 MB L3 cache to keep data flowing.

However, you cannot just build an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X system, and expect to instantly leverage all 64 cores.

 

How To Optimise For 64 Cores : An AMD Guide!

After working with the RED Digital Cinema team, AMD came up with some advice on how to optimise your system for 64 cores.

Optimising For 64 Cores Summarised

1. Ensure there is 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM per thread – the system should have 128 GB to 256 GB of memory.

2. Update to Windows 10 version 18362.535 or better (KB4530684 November 2019 Update)

3. The Windows application should be updated to support 65 or more threads, with the ability to span more than one processor group

4. For Linux users, Clear Linux Distro is the best for performance.

5. Reduce storage I/O bottleneck by disabling the virus scanner and system restore feature.

6. Use separate drives for project read, project write and operating systems.

7. AMD recommends these NVMe SSD models for maximum performance with 64 cores :

The 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper Processor Family

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X is the world’s first 64-core HEDT processor, headlining the 3rd Gen Threadripper family, which now looks like this :

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X : World’s First 64-Core HEDT CPU!

There is no better person to tell you how awesome it is to have 64-cores of processing power in the new Ryzen Threadripper 3990X than Robert Hallock, AMD Senior Technical Marketing Manager.

 

New Socket sTRX4 + AMD TRX40 Chipset

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X requires a AMD TRX40 motherboard with a new sTRX4 processor socket. However, you will still be able to use existing Threadripper coolers.

The processor comes with 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes, of which 56 are available for use. The AMD TRX40 chipset adds another 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes, with 16 free lanes.

In total, the new Socket sTRX4 and TRX40 chipset will give you 72 free PCIe 4.0 lanes to use, compared to just 56 free PCIe 3.0 lanes in previous generations.

In addition, the new AMD TRX40 chipset communicates with the 3rd Gen Threadripper using a PCIe 4.0 x8 link. This gives it 4X more bandwidth than the PCIe 3.0 x4 link used in the first two generations.

The first two members of the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors have been confirmed :

  • Ryzen Threadripper 3960X : 24C / 48T, 4.5GHz / 3.8GHz, 140 MB cache

They are introducing both a new sTRX4 processor socket, and a new AMD TRX40 chipset to support it. However, you will still be able to use existing Threadripper coolers.

AMD shared with us these benchmark results comparing the Threadripper 3960X and Threadripper 3970X against the Intel Core i9-9980XE.

 

3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper Price + Availability

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X is priced at $1999, which is $200 more than the Threadripper 2990WX when it was launched. Here in Malaysia, its official price is RM 8,399 inclusive of SST.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X, on the other hand, is priced at $1399 – $100 more than the Threadripper 2970WX when it was launched. Here in Malaysia, its official price is RM 5,899 inclusive of SST.

AMD will officially launch the 3970X and 3960X on 25 November 2019, and from the performance preview video, it looks like both models will be available on the same day!

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X + 3rd Gen Threadripper Delayed To Nov!

AMD just announced that they will now launch the Ryzen 9 3950X together with the first slew of 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processorsin November 2019!

 

AMD Ryzen 9 Availability

We reported back in August that AMD was having trouble meeting the high demand for their Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics cards.

At that time, the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X was hard to come by, and that has not changed until today – it is still hard to get your hands on one, compared to say, the Ryzen 7 3700X.

It appears that they have yield issues with the Ryzen 9 3900 that has kept availability low, compared to the other 3rd Gen Ryzen models.

 

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X + 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper Delayed!

The AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is a 16-core, 32-thread processor to top off the 3rd Gen Ryzen family, offering a 3.5 GHz base clock, a 4.7 GHz boost clock, and 72 MB of L2 and L3 caches.

Back in June, AMD announced that the Ryzen 9 3950X would be available sometime in September 2019.

However, they have now announced that it will delayed and launched together with the 3rd Gen Threadripper processors in November.

We are confident that when enthusiasts get their hands on the world’s first 16-core mainstream desktop processor and our next-generation of high-end desktop processors, the wait will be well worth it.

To assuage the disappointment of Ryzen fans, they shared with us the first “picture” of the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor. It’s really just a promotional render.

 

Ryzen 9 3950X + 3rd Gen Threadripper Delay : Good or Bad?

Well, if you have been hoping to upgrade to the 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X this month, it’s bad news, of course.

But two months passes in a jiffy, and when you think about it – it could potentially be good news.

For one thing, the high demand and low availability of the Ryzen 9 3900X meant that it is being sold at inflated prices right now.

The same thing will likely happen with the Ryzen 9 3950X, because yields will be significantly lower than lower-end models, like the Ryzen 7 3700X.

By delaying the launch, AMD buys time to improve the yield and volume for both the Ryzen 9 3950X and the 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processors.

This should, hopefully, keep availability high and the prices steady when they eventually launch in November.

2nd Gen Threadripper Key Features

Built on the 12nm Zen+ microarchitecture, the 2nd Gen Threadripper processors, they offer up to 32 cores and 64 threads, with higher base and boost clock speeds. They are compatible with existing AMD X399 motherboards with a BIOS update.

The 2nd Gen Threadripper processors also feature improved AMD SenseMI Technology, with Precision Boost 2, and Extended Frequency Range 2 (XFR2). Other performance and value-added features include :

  • AMD StoreMI Technology : All X399 platform customers will now have free access to AMD StoreMI Technology enabling configured PCs to load files, games, and applications from a high-capacity hard drive at SSD-like read speeds.
  • Ryzen Master Utility : Like all AMD Ryzen processors, 2nd Gen Threadripper CPUs are fully unlocked. With the updated AMD Ryzen Master Utility, AMD has added new features like fast core detection both on die and per-CCX, advanced hardware controls, and simple, one-click workload optimisations.
  • Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) : A new performance—enhancing feature that allows multi-threaded boost limits to be raised by tapping into extra power delivery headroom in premium motherboards.

 

How Fast Are The 2nd Gen Threadripper CPUs?

In this comparison, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is between 35% and 51% faster than the Intel Core i9-7980XE.

When it comes to games, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X was slightly slower than the Intel Core i9-7900X processor, but much faster in content creation – between 18% to 41% faster.

 

2nd Gen Threadripper Price + Availability

The 32-core, 64-thread AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is available from 14  August 2018 onwards at a recommended retail price of US$1,799 / RM 7,999.

The 16-core, 32-thread AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X processor will launch on 31 August 2018, with a recommended retail price of US$899 / RM 3,899.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX Up Close!

Built on the 12nm Zen+ microarchitecture, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX has 24 cores which handles up to 48 simultaneous threads. It boasts higher base and boost clock speeds, with a 12 MB L2 cache, and a 64 MB L3 cache.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX processor also features improved AMD SenseMI Technology, with Precision Boost 2, and Extended Frequency Range 2 (XFR2). Let’s take a look at its key features…

 

AMD Zen+ Microarchitecture

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX is based on the improved AMD Zen+ microarchitecture, which delivers slightly better performance, with lower cache and memory latencies :

  • 3% more 1T IPC (instructions per second)
  • 13% lower L1 cache latency
  • 34% lower L2 cache latency
  • 16% lower L3 cache latency
  • 11% lower memory latency
  • Official support for JEDEC DDR4-2933

12LP Process Technology

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX is fabricated using the 12LP (12 nm Leading Performance) process technology from GlobalFoundries. This is the same process technology used in the 2nd Gen Ryzen processor.

12LP is really a 14 nm process, with improvements and a tighter pitch, so the die size and transistor count remain the same. However, the improved process allows for these improvements :

  • top clock speed increased by 250 MHz
  • “all core” now overclock around 4.2 GHz
  • CPU voltage is reduced by about 50 mV at all clock speeds
  • up to 11% lower power consumption, compared to 14 nm
  • up to 16% better performance per watt, compared to 14 nm

Precision Boost 2

Precision Boost 2 is one of the biggest improvements in AMD SenseMI. It replaces the old 2-core boost model, with a linear boost model. This allows for much greater performance for games and applications that use more than 2 cores.

Extended Frequency Range 2 (XFR 2)

XFR 2 will boosts its performance by 4-7%, depending on the performance of the installed CPU cooler.

AMD X399 Chipset

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX will run on the existing AMD X399 motherboards, with a BIOS update. However, motherboard vendors have new AMD X399 Refresh motherboards that will offer higher overclockability, and the AMD StoreMI Technology as a value-added bonus.

AMD StoreMI is basically an OEM version of the Enmotus FuzeDrive Basic software, which allows you to combine all of your storage drives into a single virtual storage drive. It can even add up to 2 GB of DDR4 memory as a very fast cache to the combined drive.

MSI MEG X399 Creation + MSI Xpander-Aero Preview

If you are excited about the upcoming GIGABYTE X399 AORUS Xtreme motherboard, your jaw will drop when you see the upcoming MSI MEG X399 Creation motherboard. It is probably the most extreme (and expensive) AMD X399 Refresh motherboard at Computex 2018.

MSI threw everything but the kitchen sink into this massive X399 motherboard. But they want to stuff even more storage capabilities, so they are throwing in a free MSI Xpander-Aero card too! Let’s take a close look at both the MSI MEG X399 Creation motherboard, and the MSI Xpander-Aero card!

 

The MSI MEG X399 Creation Motherboard

MSI designed the MEG X399 Creation to be the ultimate AMD X399 Refresh motherboard. It has eight DDR4 memory slots, four PCIe x16 slots and a 19-phase digital power design with dual 8-pin EPS power connectors.

It also comes with extensive thermal monitoring and fan controls – no less than ten PWM fan controls, and three dedicated thermal sensors on board! it also comes with three M.2 slots – all cooled by a large two-piece L-shaped heatsink.

The MSI MEG X399 Creation has dual Intel Gigabit LAN ports, and built-in 802.11ac WiFi (2×2) and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.

MSI expects to begin production of this massive motherboard at the end of July 2018. It will have a target price of $499 / €428 / RM 2,000.

The MSI Xpander-Aero Card

If three M.2 slots are not enough, the MSI MEG X399 Creation motherboard comes with the new MSI Xpander-Aero card bundled. This is basically MSI’s version of the ASUS Hyper M.2 X16 (Price Check) card that powered the super-fast 8TB WD SSD RAID array, enhanced with a fan. Hence, the Aero moniker.

The MSI Xpander-Aero card allows you to install up to four M.2 solid state drives, up to 22 mm x 110 mm in size. The card is also powered by an additional 6-pin PCIe power connector. It only supports NVMe SSDs and not SATA SSDs.

These drives are not just cooled by a massive heatsink, there is a large fan to keep everything running cool, preventing the drives from throttling from excessive temperatures. MSI told us that they also designed the Xpander-Aero to look like a graphics card. The downside – it takes up two slots.

Confirmed : The Threadripper Is An EPYC CPU In Disguise!

Veteran German overclocker der8auer is back at it again! This time, he set out to prove that the two non-functional dies of the AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPU are not blanks, as some pundits have claimed. What he discovered confirms that the Threadripper is really an EPYC processor in disguise!

Four Dies But Only Two Work

Thanks to the der8auer’s delidded Threadripper, we know that the Ryzen Threadripper has four AMD Ryzen (Zeppelin) dies, each with 8 Zen cores. Since the Threadripper is only designed to be a 16-core processor, two of the dies are non-functional. So why are there two extra dies?

Simple answer – easier and cheaper production. This is counter-intuitive, so let us explain.

AMD makes a 32-core server processor that uses four Zeppelin cores. Formerly known as AMD Naples, we now know it as the AMD EPYC processor.

Instead of creating a separate production line for Ryzen Threadripper, it is easier and cheaper for AMD to just pick out EPYC parts to use. After all, the EPYC and Threadripper processors both use sockets that are physically the same – SP3 and SP3r2 (TR4), with the same number of pins – 4094.

Combining their production gives them greater economies of scale. Both EPYC and Threadripper are not mass-market processors after all. It also allows them to salvage EPYC processors that don’t make the grade. This isn’t new or extraordinary – the semiconductor industry has been binning and salvaging chips for decades.

 

The Threadripper Is Really An AMD EPYC CPU

According to AMD, the non-functioning dies are really just “structural inserts” (aka blanks) used to support the integrated heat spreader (IHS), and prevent its deformation under pressure. They also revealed that the two functional dies are placed diagonally to “reduce hot spot formation“.

So der8auer set out to prove that AMD used actual Ryzen processor dies (either non-functioning or disabled), instead of blanks. After removing the four dies and sanding them down, he proved that they are all actual Ryzen (Zeppelin) dies.

As you can see, none of the dies appear to be blanks or mere structural inserts. They appear to be proper Ryzen dies that have either been disabled, or are non-functioning. You can literally see the processor cores after der8auer sanded down the dies.

In other words, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper is really an AMD EPYC CPU, with two of its processor dies disabled / non-functional.

Of course, this is merely one example. AMD could possibly produce some Threadripper processors with blanks. But as we pointed out, the Threadripper and EPYC processors are so fundamentally similar, it would make sense for AMD to just produce both in the same production line. This allows them to quickly adjust the type of processors produced according to market demand.

All partially-functioning parts will naturally be used as Threadripper CPUs, but unless AMD’s yield is extremely poor, most will be perfectly good AMD EPYC processors that merely have two of their dies disabled.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper Processor

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper will have up to 16 cores, processing up to 32 simultaneous threads. It will use the new Socket TR4, have quad-channel DDR4 memory support and feature 64 PCI Express lanes. If you were impressed by the 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 processors (read our AMD Ryzen 7 1800X review), just imagine how powerful the 16-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor will be.

In this video, Jim Anderson, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the AMD Compute and Graphics business group, reveals the key features of the Threadripper CPU  and Socket TR4 platform.

Then, AMD President & CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, showed us a demo of Prey running on 4K (on Ultra High settings) using the AMD Ryzen Threadripper, with dual AMD Radeon RX Vega graphics cards. However, she did not reveal the average frame rate of this setup.

In this new video, Dr. Lisa Su and John Taylor (Corporate Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, AMD), reveal the specifications of the two first AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors (as well as the first two Ryzen 3 processors). It also shows both Ryzen Threadripper CPUs delivering higher performance in Cinebench R15 than Intel Core i9-7900X X-Series processor.

Targeted at the high-end desktop (HEDT) market, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper is paired with the X399 chipset and the new Socket TR4, offering quad memory channels and support up to 2TB of DDR4 memory, as well as 64 PCI Express 3.0 lanes!

ASRock, ASUS, GIGABYTE and MSI already have motherboards built around the AMD X399 chipset. Everything is set for the Threadripper’s epic battle against the newly-announced Intel X-Series processors!

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper Delidded

German overclocked der8auer delidded a Threadripper processor with AMD’s permission recently, revealing many interesting facts.

  • It has four Zeppelin dies with 32 cores, but only two dies (16 cores) are functional.
  • It is functionally the AMD EPYC server processor with half the dies disabled.
  • The dies are soldered to a gold-plated heat spreader using indium solder.

  • Although rumoured to be branded as the AMD Ryzen 9 processor (to directly compete against the newly-announced Intel Core i9 processors), AMD will be using the Ryzen Threadripper name instead. We can’t blame them – Threadripper is certainly a better and more memorable name than Ryzen 9![adrotate banner=”4″] -> Correct! AMD has announced that it will be called AMD Ryzen Threadripper!
  • AMD will launch two Threadripper processors on 27 July 2017. -> Correct!
  • The top-of-the-line processor will have 16 cores, capable of handling 32 simultaneous threads-> Correct! It is the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X!
  • There will also be a 12-core processor, capable of handling 24 simultaneous threads. -> Correct! It is the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X!
  • There will eventually be 14-core and 10-core versions as well.
  • All AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors will support quad DDR4 memory channels and 64 PCI Express lanes. -> Correct!
  • They are rumoured to use a solder thermal interface material (TIM), which would make deliding of the processor by enthusiasts difficult, if not impossible.  -> Correct!

The Threadripper Game Mode

Games are mostly optimised for quad-core processors… and rarely make use of octa-core processors. In fact, having even more cores can result in poorer performance due to poor thread scheduling. In some cases, the game may not even run at all.

To avoid those problems, AMD developer the Threadripper Game Mode. You can switch from the default “Creator Mode” to the “Game Mode” in the AMD Ryzen Master utility. Switching to Game Mode changes the Threadripper processor in two ways :

  • It temporarily disables half the CPU cores, turning the Threadripper 1950X (Lowest Price) into an 8C 16T processor like the AMD Ryzen 1800X, and the Threadripper 1920X (Lowest Price) into an 6C 12T processor like the AMD Ryzen 1600X.
  • It tells the operating system to use a Local Mode (NUMA) memory, which keeps the game and its memory footprint inside one CPU die and the locally-connected DRAM memory. This minimises several key latency points in the system, which will improve gaming performance.

Once you are done playing your game, you can switch back to Creator Mode to make full use of all of the Threadripper’s cores.

Let’s take a look at the performance difference between the Creator Mode and the Game Mode.

As you can see, the Game Mode improves the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X’s gaming performance by 10% to 38%. It’s likely that disabling half the cores also allow the Threadripper to clock them higher, as there is now a much higher thermal headroom.

The Secrets Of The Delidded Threadripper CPU Revealed!

A few days ago, veteran German overclocker der8auer delidded* an AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor with AMD’s permission recently. The video and pictures of the delidded Threadripper revealed many interesting facts about the upcoming 16-core desktop processor. He was soon asked to remove the video, but as they say – the Internet never forgets.

In this article, we will summarise the secrets revealed by der8auer’s delidded Threadripper processor!

* Delidding a processor means removing its integrated heat spreader (IHS), to reveal the processor die(s) underneath.

Four Dies But Only Two Are Functional

Although many of us assumed that Threadripper would use two AMD Ryzen (aka Zeppelin) dies, the der8aeur’s delidded Threadripper revealed four Ryzen dies underneath the heatsink!

As you know, every Zeppelin die has eight AMD Zen processor cores inside. So technically, every AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor has 32 processor cores in them.

AMD has confirmed that only two of the four Zeppelin dies in the Ryzen Threadripper is functional. The other two are permanently disabled.

 

EPYC Processor In Threadripper Clothes

The presence of four Zeppelin dies means the Ryzen Threadripper is functionally the AMD EPYC server processor, with two of its dies disabled.

Why would AMD use four processor dies when they only need two? Simple answer – easier and cheaper production. This is counter-intuitive, so let us explain.

AMD makes a 32-core server processor that uses four Zeppelin cores. Formerly known as AMD Naples, we now know it as the AMD EPYC processor.

Instead of creating a separate production line for Ryzen Threadripper, it is easier and cheaper for AMD to just pick out EPYC parts to use. After all, the EPYC and Threadripper processors both use sockets that are physically the same – SP3 and SP3r2 (TR4), with the same number of pins – 4094.

Combining their production gives them greater economies of scale. Both EPYC and Threadripper are not mass-market processors after all. It also allows them to salvage EPYC processors that don’t make the grade. This isn’t new or extraordinary – the semiconductor industry has been binning and salvaging chips for decades.

Indium Solder + Gold-Plating

AMD did not skimp on the TIM (Thermal Interface Material). In fact, they went for top-of-the-line solution – gold-plating the base of the heat spreader, and directly soldering the dies to it using an indium solder.

This is as good as it gets, ladies and gentlemen. So please don’t waste your time and kill your Ryzen Threadripper processor by delidding it!

 

Possible 32-Core Threadripper

The decision to produce the Ryzen Threadripper as a clipped version of the AMD EPYC processor means it would be very easy for AMD to release a 32-core Threadripper processor down the road.

However, we think this is quite unlikely as the market for a 32-core desktop processor will be miniscule. Even the 16-core Ryzen Threadripper will sell only in small numbers – much, much smaller than the highly-popular Ryzen 7 processors.

The atmosphere in the room was definitely more electric this year. At Computex 2016, AMD Zen (now Ryzen) and Vega may have appeared to be pipe dreams. But at this press conference, no one doubts that AMD will deliver what they promised, and then some. It was now a matter of when, not if.

The upcoming AMD Threadripper with its 16 cores is obviously targeted at the Intel X-Series processors that were just announced yesterday. Even its chipset, the X399, seemed to be intentionally named to “beat” the Intel X299 chipset.

Meanwhile, the announcement of the AMD Ryzen Mobile processors finally injects some excitement into the mobile computing market. Not just because it will offer performance closer to that of the Intel Core processors, but also because it will be the first Ryzen APU that will feature an on-die AMD Vega GPU!
