AMD gave us a tech and performance briefing on the two 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processors they just launched.
Here is EVERYTHING we know so far about the 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processors!
The 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper Tech Preview
Giving us a preview of the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors is Don Woligroski, AMD Desktop Processor Technical Marketing Manager.
The 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper Performance Preview
And here we have the official 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper performance preview featuring Dr. Lisa Su, Robert Hallock and James Knight from AMD, as well as Dan Akers and Shawn Wallbridge of Blur Studio.
The 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper Processors
The first two members of the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors have been confirmed :
- Ryzen Threadripper 3970X : 32C / 64T, 4.5GHz / 3.7GHz, 144 MB cache
- Ryzen Threadripper 3960X : 24C / 48T, 4.5GHz / 3.8GHz, 140 MB cache
Like the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen processors, the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors are based on the new Zen 2 architecture with the chiplet design approach.
The CPU dies are fabricated on the 7 nm process technology, while the I/O die is fabricated on the 12 nm process technology.

New Socket sTRX4 + AMD TRX40 Chipset
AMD also announced that they are breaking backward compatibility with the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper.
They are introducing both a new sTRX4 processor socket, and a new AMD TRX40 chipset to support it. However, you will still be able to use existing Threadripper coolers.
The processor comes with 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes, of which 56 are available for use. The AMD TRX40 chipset adds another 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes, with 16 free lanes.
In total, the new Socket sTRX4 and TRX40 chipset will give you 72 free PCIe 4.0 lanes to use, compared to just 56 free PCIe 3.0 lanes in previous generations.
In addition, the new AMD TRX40 chipset communicates with the 3rd Gen Threadripper using a PCIe 4.0 x8 link. This gives it 4X more bandwidth than the PCIe 3.0 x4 link used in the first two generations.
