Smart Access Memory Now Enabled For Ryzen 3000 CPUs!

AMD just enabled Smart Access Memory for select Ryzen 3000 desktop processors!

Find out what Smart Access Memory does, and how to enable it for a FREE boost in performance!

Smart Access Memory Now Enabled For Ryzen 3000 CPUs!

When AMD launched the Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics card, they also mentioned that Smart Access Memory is now enabled for Ryzen 3000 desktop processors, except :

  • AMD Ryzen 5 3400G
  • AMD Ryzen 3 3200G

This would give those older processors a small but FREE boost in performance, when paired with Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards and AMD 500 series motherboards.

To enable Smart Access Memory for your Ryzen 3000 / 5000 series PC, please follow the steps!

Unfortunately, AMD has not enabled Smart Access Memory for Radeon RX 5000 series graphics cards, or AMD 400 series motherboards yet.

Smart Access Memory : How Does It Boost Ryzen 3000 Performance?

Smart Access Memory is AMD’s marketing term for their implementation of the PCI Express Resizable BAR (Base Address Registers) capability.

What does that mean exactly?

CPUs are traditionally limited to a 256 MB I/O memory address region for the GPU frame buffer. This of it as an “data dump” for stuff like textures, shaders and geometry.

Since this “data dump” is limited to 256 MB, the CPU can only send texture, shader and geometry data as and when the GPU requires them.

This introduces some latency – delay from when the GPU requires the data, and the CPU send them.

Turning on Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory greatly expands the size of that data dump, letting the CPU directly access the GPU’s entire frame buffer memory.

Instead of transferring data when requested by the GPU, the CPU processes and stores the data directly in the graphics memory.

Graphics assets can be transferred to graphics memory in full, instead of in pieces. In addition, multiple transfers can occur simultaneously, instead of being queued up.

While this AMD graphic above suggests that Smart Access Memory will widen the memory path (and thus memory bandwidth) between the CPU and GPU, that is not true.

Smart Access Memory / Resizable BAR will not increase memory bandwidth.

What it does is let the CPU directly access the entire GPU frame buffer memory, instead of using the usual 256 MB “dump”. That reduces latency because the graphics assets are now accessible by the GPU at all times.

CPU Architecture + Design

Like all other 3rd Gen Ryzen processors, the Ryzen 9 3950X are based on the new Zen 2 architecture with the chiplet design approach.

The CPU dies are fabricated on the 7 nm process technology, while the I/O die is fabricated on the 12 nm process technology.

Better Single-Threaded Performance

The new AMD Ryzen 9 3950X delivers up to 22% better single-threaded performance, which is critical for games.

This gives it comparable gaming performance to the Intel Core i9-9900K and Intel Core i9-9920X processors.

Much Better Multi-Threaded Performance

With 16 cores and 32 threads, the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is much faster than the 8-core Intel Core i9-9900K and 12-core Intel Core i9-9920X processors. It’s not even close!

Far More Power-Efficient!

Thanks to its CPU cores being fabricated on the 7 nm process technology, the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is able to do more with less power.

Tech ARP Eco-Mode Guide 3.0 for 3rd Gen Ryzen Processors!

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about the new Ryzen Eco-Mode for 3rd Gen Ryzen processors!

Find out when, how and why you should enable or disable the Ryzen Eco-Mode!

Updated @ 2019-11-17 : Added a guide on enabling PBO in the BIOS, and updated the article in general.

Updated @ 2019-11-09 : Added Robert Hallock’s video on Ryzen Eco-Mode, and a compatibility list.

The New 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Eco-Mode

AMD Ryzen Master 2.0 comes with a new Eco-Mode for 3rd Gen Ryzen processors, but NOT the Ryzen 3000-series APUs.

AMD Senior Technical Marketing Manager, Robert Hallock, gives us a quick primer in this video.

What Eco-Mode does is lower the 3rd Gen Ryzen processor’s TDP by one step :

  • 105 W and 95 W processors will be limited to 65 W
  • 65 W processors will be limited to 45 W

The 3rd Gen Ryzen processor will manage core voltage and frequency automatically to keep to the new reduced power level.

Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO), Automatic Overclocking (AOC) and manual overclocking will be disabled when Eco-Mode is enabled.

Impact Of Ryzen Eco-Mode

Enabling Eco-Mode naturally impacts the processor’s performance, but greatly reduces its power consumption with a significant drop in CPU temperature.

AMD shared this chart with us, comparing the performance of the new Ryzen 9 3950X, with and without Eco-Mode turned on.

With a 38% lower TDP, the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X used 44% less power and ran 7°C cooler. On the downside, it was 23% slower.

However, it offers those on a limited TDP budget the option of using a CPU with more cores than would normally be possible.

Ryzen Eco-Mode Use Case

According to AMD Desktop Processor Technical Marketing Manager, Don Woligroski, Eco-Mode is best used by those who want to run high-end 3rd Gen Ryzen processors in Small Form Factor (SFF) PCs, NAS, Plex boxes, etc.

It will allow them to enjoy the performance of 12 or 16 cores, without worrying about overloading the SFF power supply, or excessive heat accumulating in the small chassis.

It can also be used to trade off Ryzen processor power for more graphics card power, if there is limited power at the system level.

Since it can be applied on-the-fly, you can also use it to greatly reduce power consumption and thermal output when you are not using your high-performance Ryzen system for strenuous work.

And when you need processing power, you can instantly turn it into a high-performance gaming or content creation system with a simple switch!

How To Enable / Disable Ryzen Eco-Mode

Ryzen Eco-Mode will NOT appear until PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) is enabled in the BIOS, so before you begin, check and make sure PBO has been enabled in the BIOS.

  1. Download and install AMD Ryzen Master 2.0, or newer.
  2. Select one of the four profiles to edit and use.
  3. Under Control Mode, select ECO-Mode.

  1. Click the Apply button at the bottom to activate Eco-Mode immediately.
  2. The processor will immediately manage its core voltages and frequencies to achieve the lower power target.
  3. To disable Eco-Mode, just select one of the four other control modes – Default, Precision Boost Overdrive, Auto Overclocking or Manual.

  1. Click the Apply button to disable Eco-Mode, and activate the selected control mode.

There Is No Eco-Mode Option In Ryzen Master!

If you do not see the Eco-Mode option in Ryzen Master, that’s because PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) is disabled in the BIOS.

  1. Reboot your computer, and go into BIOS setup
  2. Look for the PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) option, which may be hidden under overclocking options
  3. It will generally be set to Auto by default.
  4. Switch that to Enabled.
  5. Save the change, and reboot your computer.

After doing this, Eco-Mode will appear in Ryzen Master.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X + 3rd Gen Threadripper Delayed To Nov!

AMD just announced that they will now launch the Ryzen 9 3950X together with the first slew of 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processorsin November 2019!

AMD Ryzen 9 Availability

We reported back in August that AMD was having trouble meeting the high demand for their Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics cards.

At that time, the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X was hard to come by, and that has not changed until today – it is still hard to get your hands on one, compared to say, the Ryzen 7 3700X.

It appears that they have yield issues with the Ryzen 9 3900 that has kept availability low, compared to the other 3rd Gen Ryzen models.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X + 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper Delayed!

The AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is a 16-core, 32-thread processor to top off the 3rd Gen Ryzen family, offering a 3.5 GHz base clock, a 4.7 GHz boost clock, and 72 MB of L2 and L3 caches.

Back in June, AMD announced that the Ryzen 9 3950X would be available sometime in September 2019.

However, they have now announced that it will delayed and launched together with the 3rd Gen Threadripper processors in November.

We are focusing on meeting the strong demand for our 3rd generation AMD Ryzen processors in the market and now plan to launch both the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X and initial members of the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor family in volume this November.

We are confident that when enthusiasts get their hands on the world’s first 16-core mainstream desktop processor and our next-generation of high-end desktop processors, the wait will be well worth it.

To assuage the disappointment of Ryzen fans, they shared with us the first “picture” of the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor. It’s really just a promotional render.

Ryzen 9 3950X + 3rd Gen Threadripper Delay : Good or Bad?

Well, if you have been hoping to upgrade to the 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X this month, it’s bad news, of course.

But two months passes in a jiffy, and when you think about it – it could potentially be good news.

For one thing, the high demand and low availability of the Ryzen 9 3900X meant that it is being sold at inflated prices right now.

The same thing will likely happen with the Ryzen 9 3950X, because yields will be significantly lower than lower-end models, like the Ryzen 7 3700X.

By delaying the launch, AMD buys time to improve the yield and volume for both the Ryzen 9 3950X and the 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper processors.

This should, hopefully, keep availability high and the prices steady when they eventually launch in November.

AMD Celebrates Strong Ryzen + Radeon Sales In Malaysia!

Last night, AMD celebrated the strong Ryzen and Radeon sales in Malaysia with a party!

Here is our full coverage of AMD Malaysia’s Ryzen and Radeon Party!

The 2019 AMD Ryzen + Radeon Party In Malaysia!

Even though AMD just started selling the 3rd Generation Ryzen processors, and the Radeon RX 5700 series graphics cards, they have seen unprecedented demand leading to shortages in Malaysia.

So the AMD Ryzen + Radeon Party was, in part, to assuage the local dealers who have had trouble getting enough Ryzen and Radeon units to sell.

That is a good problem for AMD to have though, which Ryan Sim, AMD ASEAN Sales and Marketing Director, acknowledges.

As AMD Malaysia’s Gene Lim would share in this video, AMD has already beaten Intel in the CPU market in Japan and South Korea.

He earlier shared during the GIGABYTE X570 launch that AMD currently has a 42-43% share in the Malaysian CPU market, and they should capture at least 50% in Q3 2019.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 Series Primer

The AMD Radeon RX 5700 series of graphics cards is built around the new AMD Navi GPU that uses the new RDNA architecture and fabricated on the 7 nm process technology.

Its redesigned Compute Units deliver 1.25X higher performance per clock, and up to 1.5X better performance per watt.

The AMD 3rd Gen Ryzen Deep Dive Tech Briefing!

AMD just revealed the 3rd Gen Ryzen family of processors at Computex 2019 and E3, with six models built on the 7 nm process technology!

Join us for a deep dive into the AMD 3rd Gen Ryzen technical details with Robert Hallock!

The AMD 3rd Gen Ryzen Deep Dive Tech Briefing!

Delivering the deep dive tech briefing this time is Robert Hallock. Robert, if you don’t know yet, is the Senior Technical Marketing Manager at AMD.

AMD 3rd Gen Ryzen Feature Summary

Zen 2 On 7 nm

The 3rd Gen Ryzen processors are based on the new Zen 2 architecture with the chiplet design approach. And they are fabricated on the 7 nm process technology!

Better Single-Threaded Performance

The new AMD Zen 2 architecture boasts 9% to 21% better single-threaded performance, which is critical for games.

Faster Clock Ramping

The 3rd Gen Ryzen processors support CPP2 – a clock speed selection interface for UEFI. This cuts the time to switch clock speeds from 30 ms to just 1-2 ms!

This will give them a nice 6% boost in performance, but only if you upgrade to the Windows 10 May 2019 update.

AMD GameCache

The new L3 cache is now twice as big as the L3 cache of the last-generation 2nd Gen Ryzen processors.

The 6-core and 8-core processors have a 32 MB L3 cache, while the 12-core and 16-core models have a massive 64 MB L3 cache!

Doubling the L3 cache size alone reduces the effective memory latency by up to 33 ns, giving your games a boost in frame rate of between 11% and 21%.

This is why AMD is calling it their GameCache…

3rd Gen Ryzen Is PCIe 4.0 Ready!

The AMD Ryzen 3000 processors have 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes. This gives you a total of 40 PCIe 4.0 lanes, when paired with a new AMD X570 motherboard.

Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO)

This new feature increases the boost clock overhead by 200 MHz (in 25 MHz increments) – basically easy overclocking for lazy people.

If you are using the Ryzen 9 3900X, PBO allows you to increase the boost clock from 4.6 GHz to 4.8 GHz.

Backward Compatibility

Even though AMD also announced the new X570 chipset, which gives you 16 extra PCIe 4.0 lanes; the 3rd Gen Ryzen processors can be installed in older AMD AM4 motherboards.

All you need to do is update your current AM4 motherboard’s BIOS before installing the new processors.
