AMD SmartShift Explained : Smart Power Distribution FTW!

At CES 2020, AMD announced their SmartShift technology that debuts in the Ryzen 4000 Mobile processors.

What is AMD SmartShift, and how does it work? Let’s find out!

AMD SmartShift : What Is It?

AMD SmartShift is a new technology that is being introduced with the new AMD Ryzen 4000 Mobile processor family.

It can be simply described as a smart power distribution technique, to dynamically improve CPU or GPU performance with a limited power budget.

How Does AMD SmartShift Work?

In a typical laptop, the CPU and GPU each have their own pre-defined power budget.

The CPU and GPU will individually adjust their power consumption according to the load, using less power for a longer battery life, but never exceeding their power budget even when there is a need for more performance.

AMD SmartShift changes that by simply doing away with the pre-defined power budget, and using a shared power budget instead.

When you are running CPU-intensive tasks, it lets the Ryzen CPU take up more of the power budget, improving its performance.

But when you start up a game, AMD SmartShift lets the Radeon GPU take up more of the power budget, for better gaming performance.

Ultimately, SmartShift lets you squeeze out more performance from the CPU and GPU for a limited power budget.

The Performance Impact

According to AMD, SmartShift will deliver up to 10% better gaming performance, and up to 12% better content creation performance.

This was based on their internal tests using the AMD Ryzen 4800H mobile processor, coupled with the AMD Radeon RX 5600M GPU.

AMD SmartShift : How To Get It

AMD SmartShift is built into the new AMD Ryzen 4000 Mobile processor family, but also requires the laptop to have a separate AMD Radeon Graphics GPU.

It also works only with the recently-launched AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition driver.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition Tech Report!

AMD just unveiled Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition – their next-generation software suite for Radeon graphics!

Here is our quick primer on the new AMD Radeon Software Adrenaline 2020 Edition!

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition

AMD released Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition a year ago, delivering a performance boost of up to 15%, as well as new features like PC-to-VR, mobile device streaming, and in-game instant replay.

Now, AMD is introducing the new Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition, which promises a new slew of improvements and features!

New Look + Feel

Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition is a newly-redesigned application with a new look and feel designed to make it easier for users to access and use its functions.

The new Game Center allows users to launch games from a central location regardless of the online game store, adjust Radeon Software settings for each individual game, and track gaming and performance stats.

In addition, a new integrated web browser enables users to browse online for valuable game information, walkthroughs, video tutorials of Radeon™ graphics features, and more – without ever leaving the game.

Radeon Boost

The new Radeon Boost feature will deliver up to a 23 percent average performance boost during fast-motion gaming scenarios by dynamically reducing image resolution, to increase frame rates and fluidity, and bolstering responsiveness… with little to no perceptible change in image quality according to AMD.

Radeon Boost will be supported in numerous top games at launch, with additional titles added over time.

AMD Link

AMD Link now features an updated interface that matches the new desktop application look and feel.

The AMD Link mobile application now allows users to take game streaming to mobile devices outside of their homes, enabling high-quality PC gameplay on phones or tablets from anywhere.

Integer Display Scaling

The new Integer Display Scaling feature scales on-screen images from one pixel to four or more, giving classic games a retro, pixel-art style look with ultra-crisp scaling options for high-PPI displays without a performance penalty.

DirectML Media Filters

These are new visual noise reduction and upscaling filters that utilise machine learning to clean up photos and videos, to deliver better quality than traditional de-noise and upscale filters.

Radeon Image Sharpening

Radeon Image Sharpening now supports DirectX 11 games, and gives you the ability to control how much sharpness is applied. You can also toggle it on and off while in game!

Radeon Anti-Lag

Radeon Anti-Lag now supports DirectX 9 games for pre-RX 5000 series graphics cards. You can also enable it globally.

AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition Availability

Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition is available starting 10 December 2019.
