AMD launched the Ryzen Mobile APUs in October 2017, but where are the Ryzen Mobile laptops? Today, we share with you details and videos of three new Ryzen Mobile laptops, and an ASUS gaming laptop that actually uses a desktop-grade Ryzen 7 CPU!

 

The 2018 AMD Ryzen Mobile Laptops Revealed!

AMD Director of Consumer Sales (APJ), Peter Chambers, kicked off the event with a presentation on the Ryzen Mobile APUs, and the 2018 AMD Ryzen Mobile laptops. He also shared some updates on the upcoming Pinnacle Ridge (Zen+) processors.

Then Acer Malaysia’s Product Manager, Jeffrey Lai, shared the key features of the two new Acer Ryzen Mobile laptops – the Acer Nitro 5 and Acer Swift 3 SF315-41G. They run on the AMD Ryzen 7 2700U and AMD Ryzen 5 2500U APUs respectively.

Finally, Gavin Wong from Lenovo Technology revealed the key features of the Lenovo IdeaPad 720S-13ARR laptop that runs on the AMD Ryzen 5 2500U.

ASUS was also at hand to show off their ROG Strix GL702Z gaming laptop that runs on the desktop-grade AMD Ryzen 7 1700 CPU. It also features the AMD Radeon RX 580 GPU!

The Acer Nitro 5 could not make it to the launch event on time. But when it arrived the next day, we had the opportunity to take a closer look at it too.

Based on the NVIDIA Pascal microarchitecture, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti slides in between the GeForce GTX 1080 and the GeForce GTX 1070, which saw a price cut. The Pascal microarchitecture is more than 1.5 years old, but don’t knock it – it still packs a potent punch!

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Up Close

Let’s take a quick close-up look at the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Founders Edition graphics card (Price Check), and its faceted die-cast aluminium cooler.

Here are close-up pictures of the various aspects of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Founders Edition graphics card (Price Check).

Like the GeForce GTX 1070, the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti comes with a dual-linked DVI port, in addition to the usual suspects – three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0b ports.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) has a TDP of 180 W, and requires a single 8-pin PCI Express power cable. It also supports the SLI HB (High Bandwidth) bridge for two-way SLI pairing.

 

Founder’s Edition Advantage

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Founders Edition (Price Check) was designed to be the ultimate expression of NVIDIA’s gaming vision. Hence, they crafted it with premium materials and components, including a faceted die-cast aluminium-framed shroud for strength, rigidity and looks.

Aesthetics aside, the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Founders Edition comes with an improved cooler built around a radial fan and an improved aluminium heatsink. The new heatsink features vapour chamber cooling and has 2x the surface area.

It also boasts a 7-phase power design with 14 high-efficiency dual FETs for both GPU and memory power supplies. Coupled with a low-impedance power delivery network and custom voltage regulators, they deliver better power efficiency and overclocking headroom.

 

The Thermal Output

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) uses the NVIDIA GP104 GPU, which is fabricated on the 16 nm FinFET process. Thanks to the more efficient FinFET process, and the power-efficient Pascal architecture, the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti has a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of just 180 W.

We recorded the peak exhaust temperature of the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Founders Edition, and compared it to the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) and Vega 56 (Price Check) graphics cards, as well as the older GeForce GTX 1070, GeForce GTX 1060 and Radeon RX 580 graphics cards.

Note that these are not the recorded temperatures, but how much hotter the exhaust air is above ambient temperature.

With a TDP lower than the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) and Vega 56 (Price Check) graphics cards, it’s not surprising to see the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti producing a lower exhaust temperature.

 

The Noise Level

Of course, the lower exhaust temperature might be due to a more powerful, and therefore, noisier, fan. Let’s see how noisy the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Founders Edition fan really is…

Benchmarking Notes

Our graphics benchmarking test bed has the following specifications :

Operating System : Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit

Processor : AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor running at 3.6 GHz

Motherboard : AORUS AX370-Gaming 5

Memory : 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3000 memory (dual-channel)

Storage : 240 GB HyperX Savage SSD

Monitor : Dell P2415Q Ultra HD Monitor

We used the GeForce driver 388.31 for the NVIDIA graphics cards, and Radeon Software 17.9.3 for the AMD graphics cards.

 

3DMark DirectX 12 Benchmark (2560 x 1440)

3DMark Time Spy is the DirectX 12 benchmark in 3DMark. It supports new API features like asynchronous compute, explicit multi-adapter, and multi-threading.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Founders Edition (Price Check) did very well in this DirectX 12 benchmark. It came in between the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) and the Vega 56 (Price Check), and was 17% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070.

3DMark (1920 x 1080)

For Direct 11 performance, we started testing the graphics cards using 3DMark at the entry-level gaming resolution – 1920 x 1080.

Due to the relatively low resolution, this is a CPU-limited test for many high-end graphics cards. The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and the GeForce GTX 1070 were both roughly between the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) and the Radeon Vega 56 Price Check) in performance.

 

3DMark (2560 x 1440)

We then took 3DMark up a notch to the resolution of 2560 x 1440. Let’s take a look at the results!

The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) pulled away with the higher resolution. At 1440p, it was 11% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070, matching the Radeon RX Vega 56 in performance. It was just 12% slower than the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check).

 

3DMark (3840 x 2160)

This is torture, even for flagship graphics cards.

At this resolution, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) was 11% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070, matching the Radeon RX Vega 56 in performance. It was now 13% slower than the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check).

Ashes of the Singularity (1920 x 1080)

We tested Ashes of the Singularity in the DirectX 12 mode, which supports the Asynchronous Compute feature. We started with the full HD resolution.

At this resolution, the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) was just 1.6% slower than the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check), and 2.7% slower than the Vega 64 (Price Check). The two AMD Vega cards have a big advantage in AOTS, thanks to its support for Asynchronous Compute.

 

Ashes of the Singularity (2560 x 1440)

We then took Ashes of the Singularity up a notch to the resolution of 2560 x 1440. Let’s see how the cards fare now…

At 1440p, the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) was virtually equal to the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 and the Vega 56 in performance. It was 9% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070 at this resolution.

 

Ashes of the Singularity (3840 x 2160)

Finally, let’s see how the cards perform with Ashes of the Singularity running at the Ultra HD resolution of 3840 x 2160.

At the 4K resolution, the Radeon RX Vega 64‘s higher memory bandwidth allowed it to pull away from the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti by 4%. The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, in turn, was now 7% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56, and 19% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070!

Warhammer (1920 x 1080)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by Total War : Warhammer‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

All six graphics cards were so fast, they were CPU-limited at this resolution. The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) was just 5% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070. The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 and the Vega 56 has a big advantage here due to their support for Asynchronous Compute.

 

Warhammer (2560 x 1440)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by Total War : Warhammer‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

At the 1440p resolution, the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) matched the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) in performance. The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) was faster by 7%.

 

Warhammer (3840 x 2160)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by Total War : Warhammer‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

At this 4K resolution, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) pulled ahead of the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check), beating it by 6.4%. and the GeForce GTX 1070 by 10%. The Radeon RX Vega 64 remained faster, with the performance gap dropping slightly to 6.5%.

The Witcher 3 (1920 x 1080)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in The Witcher 3.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) was really fast in this test, delivering average frame rates in excess of 110 fps! This made it practically as fast as the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check), 11% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check), and 16% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070.

 

The Witcher 3 (2560 x 1440)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in The Witcher 3.

At 1440p, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) and the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) were the only cards capable of delivering an average frame rate in excess of 75 fps. In fact, their minimum frame rates were higher than the average frame rates of the GeForce GTX 1060 and Radeon RX 580 graphics cards!

At this resolution, the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti was practically as fast as the Radeon RX Vega 64, 10% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56, and 14% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070.

 

The Witcher 3 (3840 x 2160)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in The Witcher 3.

The 4K resolution in The Witcher 3 is really tough on graphics cards, practically halving their frame rates. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) and the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) were the only cards to deliver an average frame rate in excess of 40 fps at this resolution.

The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti continued to keep up with the Radeon RX Vega 64, and was 11% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56, and 14% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070 at this resolution.

For Honor (1920 x 1080)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by For Honor‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

At 1080p, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) actually edge out the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) by 2%. It was also 16% faster than both Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) and GeForce GTX 1070.

 

For Honor (2560 x 1440)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by For Honor‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) continued to edge out the Radeon RX Vega 64 by about 2%. It was now 16% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070, and 20% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56.

 

For Honor (3840 x 2160)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by For Honor‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

The 4K resolution in For Honor is a real frame rate killer. Even the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti could not deliver an average frame rate of 40 fps.

At this resolution, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (Price Check) was 4% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 64, 17% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070, and 22% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56.

Mass Effect: Andromeda (1920 x 1080)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

At this entry-level gaming resolution, all six cards did well, delivering average frame rates far in excess of 60 fps. Notably, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check), GeForce GTX 1070, Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check), and Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) were so fast, their frame rates never dropped below 60 fps.

Thanks to Asynchronous Compute and the CPU limit at this resolution, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 was 8% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. But the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti managed to beat the Radeon RX Vega 56 by 4%, which makes it about 5% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070.

 

Mass Effect: Andromeda (2560 x 1440)

With the jump in resolution, every graphics card took a massive hit in their frame rates. But the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) was now the fastest card in this comparison.

At this resolution, it was 8% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 64, 16% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070, and 24% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56.

 

Mass Effect: Andromeda (3840 x 2160)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

When the resolution was increased to 4K, even the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) took a large hit in its frame rate. Even so, it managed to deliver an average frame rate in excess of 40 fps.

At this extremely high resolution, the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti was 6% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 64, 16% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070, and 23% faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56.

Our Verdict & Award

Many critics of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) say that it is a pointless addition to the GeForce 10 Series family. We beg to disagree.

Built on the same NVIDIA GP104 GPU as the GeForce GTX 1080 and the GeForce GTX 1070, it is not meant to beat the AMD Radeon RX Vega graphics cards. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (Price Check) continues to maintain a comfortable performance lead.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is really designed to challenge the AMD Vega cards from a price-performance POV. Take a look at this comparison :

As our Radeon RX Vega 64 and Radeon RX Vega 56 reviews have shown, they are both best used for 1440p gaming. The Radeon RX Vega 64 is faster, no doubt, but it is not fast enough for 2160p gaming.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti slides right in between them in price and performance. It offers Vega 64-level (or better) performance in DirectX 11 games, and Vega 56-level (or better) performance in DirectX 12 games.

But what most people miss is that the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti offers the same performance with much lower power consumption. It uses 14% less power than the Radeon RX Vega 56, and a whooping 39% less power than the Radeon RX Vega 64.

With minimal effort, NVIDIA just introduced a graphics card for 1440p gaming that is significantly cheaper than the Radeon RX Vega 64, with comparable performance, and significantly lower power consumption… and thermal output.

Instead of being a pointless model, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti offers one of the most compelling upgrade options for gamers who are looking for a good graphics card for 1440p gaming.

That’s why we think the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti (Price Check) deserves our Editor’s Choice Award.

AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 – Future-Proofed 1440p Gaming!

The road to Vega has been a rather long one. We first saw the AMD Vega prototype running DOOM in December 2016. Not unlike a baby, it took AMD nine months to give birth to the AMD Radeon RX Vega. The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) looks exactly like Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check). In fact, the only way to tell them apart is a small label at the back of the card. Let’s take a quick tour of the Vega 64 up close!

AMD dumped the dual-linked DVI port starting with the Radeon RX 480. So it’s no surprise to see that the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) lacks a dual-linked DVI port. It has three DisplayPorts and a single HDMI 2.0b port instead.

The Vega 64 Power Consumption

The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) uses the Vega 10 GPU with 12.5 billion transistors fabricated using the 14 nm FinFET process technology. That’s 500 million transistors more than the NVIDIA GP102 GPU powering the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

Even though it’s using a finer process technology than NVIDIA, the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) has a significantly higher TDP of 295 W45 W (18%) more than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

AMD equipped the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) with two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors for a peak power draw of 375 W. This will come in handy if you intend to overclock, although keeping the GPU cool will be a challenge.

 

GPUTach

There is a GPUTach LED light strip right next to the two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors, which tells you the GPU load at a glance. There are two switches nearby that allows you to turn it on or off, and switch between the red and blue LED colours.

 

The Vega 64 Thermal Output

We recorded the peak exhaust temperature of the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) and compared it to the GeForce GTX 1080 TiGeForce GTX 1070, Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check), the GeForce GTX 1060 and the Radeon RX 580 graphics cards. Take a look.

Note that these are not the recorded temperatures, but how much hotter the exhaust air is above ambient temperature.

With its higher TDP, it’s no surprise that the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) has the highest exhaust temperature in this comparison – 2.8 °C higher than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, and 5.4 °C higher than Vega 56 (Price Check).

The Vega 64 Noise Level

Needless to say, you will be wondering about the noise level of the more powerful cooler used to keep the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) cool. In this video, we recorded the Radeon RX Vega 64 running the Ashes of the Singularity benchmark at the 4K resolution.

3DMark DirectX 12 Benchmark (2560 x 1440)

3DMark Time Spy is the DirectX 12 benchmark in 3DMark. It supports new API features like asynchronous compute, explicit multi-adapter, and multi-threading.

The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) did well in this DirectX 12 benchmark. It was 14% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check), and 22% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070. But it was outclassed by the phenomenal GeForce GTX 1080 Ti by 35%.

 

3DMark (1920 x 1080)

For Direct 11 performance, we started testing the graphics cards using 3DMark at the entry-level gaming resolution – 1920 x 1080.

Due to the relatively low resolution, this is a CPU-limited test for many high-end graphics cards.

While the GeForce GTX 1070 beat the Vega 56 (Price Check) by 10%, the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) had a comfortable 13.6% lead over the GTX 1070. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti was 26% faster than the Vega 64 at this resolution.

3DMark (2560 x 1440)

We then took 3DMark up a notch to the resolution of 2560 x 1440. Let’s take a look at the results!

At 1440p, the Vega 56 overtook the GTX 1070 by 10.5%, while the Vega 64 (Price Check) extended its performance lead to 26% over the GTX 1070, and 14% over the Vega 56 (Price Check). The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti was 30% faster than the Vega 64 at this resolution.

 

3DMark (3840 x 2160)

This is torture, even for high-end graphics cards.

The AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) held its place at this extremely high resolution, maintaining its 14% lead over the Vega 56 (Price Check), and slightly extending its performance lead over the GeForce GTX 1070 to 27.5%. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti was 28% faster than the Vega 64 at this resolution.

Ashes of the Singularity (1920 x 1080)

We tested Ashes of the Singularity in the DirectX 12 mode, which supports the Asynchronous Compute feature. We started with the full HD resolution.

Thanks to its support for Asynchronous Compute, both the Vega 64 (Price Check) and Vega 56 (Price Check) beat even the vaunted GeForce GTX 1080 Ti by 4.7% and 3.5% respectively. They were also faster than the GeForce GTX 1070 by 10% and 9% respectively.

 

Ashes of the Singularity (2560 x 1440)

We then took Ashes of the Singularity up a notch to the resolution of 2560 x 1440. Let’s see how the cards fare now…

At this higher resolution, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti‘s pixel fill rate advantage allowed it to creep past the Vega 64 (Price Check) and Vega 56 (Price Check). The two AMD Vega cards were now 9% and 7.4% faster than the GTX 1070 respectively.

 

Ashes of the Singularity (3840 x 2160)

Finally, let’s see how the cards perform with Ashes of the Singularity running at the Ultra HD resolution of 3840 x 2160.

At this ultra-high resolution, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti gained a small 4% performance advantage over the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check), and 16% over the Vega 56 (Price Check). The two AMD Vega cards were 24% and 11% faster than the GTX 1070 respectively.

Warhammer (1920 x 1080)

Total War : Warhammer is another game that supports Asynchronous Compute. This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by Total War : Warhammer‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

At this resolution, most fast graphics cards are CPU-limited. Thanks to Asynchronous Compute, both the Vega 64 (Price Check) and Vega 56 (Price Check) were able to beat the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti by 8% and 6.5% respectively, and the GTX 1070 by 10% and 9%.

 

Warhammer (2560 x 1440)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by Total War : Warhammer‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

At this higher resolution, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti was now right in between the Vega 64 (Price Check) and Vega 56 (Price Check) in performance, with a small 3% gap either way. The two AMD Vega cards were now 8% and 1.5% faster than the GTX 1070 respectively.

 

Warhammer (3840 x 2160)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by Total War : Warhammer‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

This ultra-high resolution proved too much for the AMD Vega cards, with the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti the only card capable of delivering an average frame rate above 60 fps. The GTX 1080 Ti was now 41% faster than the Vega 64, and 60% faster than the Vega 56.

On the other hand, the Vega 64 (Price Check) and Vega 56 (Price Check) cards were 17% and 3% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070.

The Witcher 3 (1920 x 1080)

At 1080p, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) was 17% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070, but 27% slower than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

 

The Witcher 3 (2560 x 1440)

At 1440p, the Vega 64’s performance lead over the GeForce GTX 1070 dropped slightly to 15%. It was now 32% slower than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

 

The Witcher 3 (3840 x 2160)

At this Ultra HD resolution. the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) maintained its 15% performance lead over the GeForce GTX 1070. It was now 35% slower than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, which was the only card to maintain an average frame rate in excess of 60 fps.

At this resolution, the Vega 64 (Price Check) was 14% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check) and GTX 1070. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti was 39% faster than the Vega 64 at this resolution.

 

For Honor (2560 x 1440)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by For Honor‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

At the higher 1440p resolution, the Vega 64 (Price Check) was 14% faster than the GTX 1070, and 17% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check). The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti was 43% faster than the Vega 64 at this resolution.

 

For Honor (3840 x 2160)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by For Honor‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

At this Ultra HD resolution, even the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti could not maintain an average frame rate above 60 fps. But it was now 43% faster than the Vega 64. The Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) was now 12% faster than the GTX 1070, and 17% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check).

Mass Effect: Andromeda (1920 x 1080)

Mass Effect: Andromeda is another game that supports Asynchronous Compute. This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

All six cards did well, delivering average frame rates in excess of 70 fps. In fact, the higher-end cards – the GeForce GTX 1070 onwards – were obviously CPU-limited at this resolution.

Thanks to Asynchronous Compute, the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) was able to beat the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti by 7%, albeit at this low resolution. It was also 11% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check), and 12% faster than the GTX 1070.

 

Mass Effect: Andromeda (2560 x 1440)

With the jump in resolution, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti barely registered a drop in its average frame rate, allowing it to leapfrog over the Radeon RX Vega 64 and beat it by 26%. The Vega 64 (Price Check) was now 7% faster than the GTX 1070, and 14% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check).

 

Mass Effect: Andromeda (3840 x 2160)

Increasing the resolution to 4K UHD greatly sapped the average frame rate of all six cards. Only GeForce GTX 1080 Ti managed to achieve an average frame rate of about 60 fps. It was now 48% faster than the Vega 64 (Price Check).

The Vega 64, on the other hand, was 10% faster than the GTX 1070, and 16% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check).

Our Verdict

Ever since we saw AMD Vega running DOOM, we had such high hopes for it. The success of the AMD Ryzen family of processors only buoyed that optimism. However, the AMD Vega turned out not to be the Pascal-killer we thought it would be.

On paper, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) has considerable advantages over even the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. It has a 34% advantage in texture fill rate, and a 51% advantage in memory bandwidth. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti only beats it in pixel fill rate by 20%.

In real life though, the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) was significantly slower than the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti… unless the game supports Asynchronous Compute. In those DirectX 12 games, the Vega 64 actually beats the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, albeit at lower resolutions.

Of course, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti costs more than the Vega 64, but it bears reminding that numbers on paper do not always translate into real world performance. It also showcases how important certain software features are in delivering better performance.

At $499, the Vega 64 (Price Check) is frankly a bit overpriced, because it is, on average, 13% faster than the Vega 56 (Price Check), which is $100 (20%) cheaper! The price would become even harder to justify when NVIDIA launches the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti for just $429.

The Radeon RX Vega 64 also has the disadvantage of a significantly higher power consumption at 295 watts. It also requires at least a 750W power supply with two 8-pin PCI Express power cables.

That said, the Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) is a step in the right direction. It is about 51% faster (on average) than the Radeon RX 580, which is based on the last generation AMD Polaris architecture. It may not have met our overly high expectations, but it is still a big improvement.

If you want a graphics card for 1440p gaming today, the Vega 56 (Price Check) or GTX 1070 offer better value. But if you want a graphics card for 1440p gaming with more headroom for future games, then the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 (Price Check) makes sense.

The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) uses the Vega 10 GPU with 12.5 billion transistors fabricated using the 14 nm FinFET process technology. Even though it’s using a finer process technology than NVIDIA, the extra 5.3 billion transistors need more power.

Hence, the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) has a TDP of 210 W60 W (40%) more than the GeForce GTX 1070. On a watt per transistor basis, this makes the Radeon RX Vega 56 is 24% more efficient than the GeForce GTX 1070. Of course, what matters more is power efficiency on a watt / performance basis.

Curiously, AMD equipped the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) with not one, but two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors for a peak power draw of 375 W.

Incidentally, there is a GPUTach LED light strip right next to the two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors, which tells you the GPU load at a glance. There are two switches nearby that allows you to turn it on or off, and switch between the red and blue LED colours.

 

The Thermal Output

We recorded the peak exhaust temperature of the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) and compared it to the GeForce GTX 1070, GeForce GTX 1060 and Radeon RX 480 graphics cards. Take a look.

Note that these are not the recorded temperatures, but how much hotter the exhaust air is above ambient temperature.

Despite its much higher TDP, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56’s exhaust temperature is just slightly higher than that of the GeForce GTX 1070. That is likely because it uses a more powerful fan with a larger heatsink.

The Noise Level

Needless to say, you will be wondering about the noise level of the more powerful cooler used to keep the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) cool. In this video, we recorded the Radeon RX Vega 56 running the Ashes of the Singularity benchmark at the 4K resolution.

Our graphics benchmarking test bed has the following specifications :

Operating System : Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit

Processor : AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor running at 3.6 GHz

Motherboard : AORUS AX370-Gaming 5

Memory : 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3000 memory (dual-channel)

Storage : 240 GB HyperX Savage SSD

Monitor : Dell P2415Q Ultra HD Monitor

We used the GeForce driver 385.41 for the NVIDIA graphics cards, and Radeon Software 17.9.1 for the AMD graphics cards.

3DMark DirectX 12 Benchmark (2560 x 1440)

3DMark Time Spy is the DirectX 12 benchmark in 3DMark. It supports new API features like asynchronous compute, explicit multi-adapter, and multi-threading.

The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) did well in this DirectX 12 benchmark. It was 6.5% faster than the GeForce GTX 1070, 51% faster than the GeForce GTX 1060, and 57% faster than the Radeon RX 480.

 

3DMark (1920 x 1080)

For Direct 11 performance, we started testing the graphics cards using 3DMark at the entry-level gaming resolution – 1920 x 1080.

Due to the relatively low resolution, this is a CPU-limited test for many high-end graphics cards.

The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) did well in the two graphics tests, beating the GeForce GTX 1070 by 8-12%. Curiously, it ended up slower than the GeForce GTX 1070 in the combined test results.

3DMark (2560 x 1440)

We then took 3DMark up a notch to the resolution of 2560 x 1440. Let’s take a look at the results!

At 1440p, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) was about 10% faster in the graphics tests, and matched it in the overall score.

 

3DMark (3840 x 2160)

This is torture, even for high-end graphics cards.

At this resolution, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) did even better, beating the GeForce GTX 1070 in the graphics tests. It still tied with the GeForce GTX 1070 in the overall scores though.

Ashes of the Singularity (1920 x 1080)

We tested Ashes of the Singularity in the DirectX 12 mode, which supports the Asynchronous Compute feature. We started with the full HD resolution.

At this resolution, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) was 9% faster than the GeForce GTX 107028% faster than the GeForce GTX 1060, and 34% faster than the Radeon RX 480.

 

Ashes of the Singularity (2560 x 1440)

We then took Ashes of the Singularity up a notch to the resolution of 2560 x 1440. Let’s see how the cards fare now…

At this higher resolution, the performance gap between the Radeon RX Vega 56 and the GeForce GTX 1070 narrowed to 7.5%.

On the other hand, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) was now 39% faster than the GeForce GTX 1060, and 45% faster than the Radeon RX 480.

 

Ashes of the Singularity (3840 x 2160)

Finally, let’s see how the cards perform with Ashes of the Singularity running at the Ultra HD resolution of 3840 x 2160.

At this ultra high resolution, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) did well, pulling away from the GeForce GTX 1070, with an 11% performance advantage. It was also 50% faster than the GeForce GTX 1060, and 52% faster than the Radeon RX 480.

Warhammer (1920 x 1080)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by Total War : Warhammer‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

At this resolution, most fast graphics cards are CPU-limited. Even so, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) is able to beat the GeForce GTX 1070 by 9%. Not bad.

 

Warhammer (2560 x 1440)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by Total War : Warhammer‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

The 1440p resolution appears to be the sweet spot for the GeForce GTX 1070, where it almost matches the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) in performance. Both graphics cards are about 33% faster than the other three cards.

 

Warhammer (3840 x 2160)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, recorded by Total War : Warhammer‘s internal DirectX 12 benchmark.

At the Ultra HD resolution, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) widened its performance lead over the GeForce GTX 1070 to 3.4%. Both cards are now about 40% faster than the remaining three cards.

At the higher 1440p resolution, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 was slightly (3.2%) faster than the Radeon RX Vega 56. The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) was 35% faster than the GeForce GTX 1060, and 41% faster than the Radeon RX 480.

 

For Honor (3840 x 2160)

Mass Effect: Andromeda (1920 x 1080)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

At this entry-level gaming resolution, all five cards did well, delivering average frame rates in excess of 60 fps. Both the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) and the GeForce GTX 1070 tied for the top spot, and they were both 24-40% faster than the other three cards.

 

Mass Effect: Andromeda (2560 x 1440)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 endured the jump in resolution better than the Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check), with a 6.7% advantage. Still, the Radeon RX Vega 56 maintain an average frame rate in excess of 60 fps, and was 28% faster than the GeForce GTX 1060, and 42% faster than the Radeon RX 480.

 

Mass Effect: Andromeda (3840 x 2160)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

The resolution increase to 4K slightly levelled the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070‘s performance advantage over the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 to 6%. The AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) was now 33% faster than the GeForce GTX 1060, and 47% faster than the Radeon RX 480.

Our Verdict

Ever since we saw AMD Vega running DOOM, we had such high hopes for it. The success of the AMD Ryzen family of processors only buoyed that optimism. However, the AMD Vega turned out not to be the Pascal-killer we thought it would be.

On paper, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) has considerable advantages over the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070. It has a 53% advantage in texture fill rate, and a 60% advantage in memory bandwidth. The GeForce GTX 1070 only beats it in pixel fill rate by 22%.

In real life though, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) was virtually equal in performance to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070. In some games, the Radeon RX Vega 56 was slightly faster. In other games, the GeForce GTX 1070 was slightly faster.

Hence, it’s no wonder AMD priced it at $399 – just $20 more than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070. It would be hard to justify a higher price, especially since the GeForce GTX 1070 is already a year old!

Even though the AMD Vega GPU was built using the smaller 14 nm process technology, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) uses considerably more power because it has significantly more transistors. It has a maximum TDP of 210 W – 60 W (40%) higher than the GeForce GTX 1070.

Earlier, we pointed out that the Radeon RX Vega 56 is 24% more efficient than the GeForce GTX 1070 on a watt per transistor basis. However, the GeForce GTX 1070 is ultimately about 40% more efficient in terms of watt / performance, which is ultimately what really matters.

That said, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check) is a step in the right direction. It is almost 50% faster (on average) than the Radeon RX 480, which used the last generation AMD Polaris architecture. It may not have met our overly high expectations, but it is still a big improvement.

After all, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (Price Check finally offers AMD fans 1440p gaming at 60 fps at a sweet price point!

At this resolution, the AMD Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) was virtually neck-to-neck with the GeForce GTX 1060. It was 62% to 69% faster than the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

 

3DMark (2560 x 1440)

We then took 3DMark up a notch to the resolution of 2560 x 1440. Let’s take a look at the results!

At this higher resolution, the AMD Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) was about 1.5% faster than the Radeon RX 480. With its much higher pixel fillrate, the GeForce GTX 1060 pulled away with a 6% average performance advantage.

 

3DMark (3840 x 2160)

This is torture, even for the GeForce GTX 1070!

At this resolution, the GeForce GTX 1060 was still 5% to 7% faster than the Radeon RX 580 (Amazon), which was itself 61% to 65% faster than the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

Ashes of the Singularity (3840 x 2160)

Finally, let’s see how the cards perform with Ashes of the Singularity running at the Ultra HD resolution of 3840 x 2160.

The AMD Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) was virtually tied with the Radeon RX 480 and GeForce GTX 1060 at this resolution. They were all about 67% faster than the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, and 26% slower than the GeForce GTX 1070.

When the resolution increased to 1440p though, the GeForce GTX 1070 pulled away and was 24% faster than the Radeon RX 580. The average frame rate of the Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) was just 1.5% faster than the Radeon RX 480, but it also delivered a significantly higher minimum frame rate.

 

Warhammer (3840 x 2160)

The 4K resolution in The Witcher 3 is really tough on graphics cards, virtually halving their frame rates. The AMD Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) was, again, between the Radeon RX 480 and the GeForce GTX 1060 in performance, with a 4-5% difference either way. Only the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 was able to deliver an average frame rate above 30 fps.

For Honor (2560 x 1440)

At this ultra high resolution, the GeForce GTX 1060 finally pulled away, with a 7% performance advantage over the Radeon RX 580 (Amazon), which was 3% faster than the Radeon RX 480. Only the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 was able to deliver an average frame rate above 30 fps.

Mass Effect: Andromeda (1920 x 1080)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

At this entry-level gaming resolution, the AMD Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) was no faster than the Radeon RX 480. They were both 9% slower than the GeForce GTX 1060 and 45% faster than the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

 

Mass Effect: Andromeda (2560 x 1440)

This chart shows you the minimum and maximum frame rates, as well as the average frame rate, that FRAPS recorded in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

With the jump in resolution, the Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) was just 1.5% faster than the Radeon RX 480. They were both 13% slower than the GeForce GTX 1060 and 48% faster than the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

Our Verdict On The Radeon RX 580

It’s pretty obvious from our benchmark results that the AMD Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) is just a slightly faster version of its predecessor, the Radeon RX 480. That is no slight, as the Radeon RX 480 is a fast graphics card. In fact, it was so fast that NVIDIA was forced to introduce the GeForce GTX 1060 at a lower price point to compete.

The Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) reused the Polaris 10 GPU from the Radeon RX 480, running it and the GDDR5 memory at a 9% and 14% higher clock speeds respectively. However, it only delivered an performance boost of between 1.5% and 4%.

Obviously, you wouldn’t upgrade to the Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) if you already own the Radeon RX 480, or GeForce GTX 1060. But it would make for a great upgrade if you are using an older, slower graphics card. That is precisely why AMD is targeting the Radeon RX 500 Series at gamers with 3 years or older graphics cards.

Here is the key takeaway point from all these benchmarks. Like its predecessor, the Radeon RX 480, the AMD Radeon RX 580 (Amazon) is designed for 1440p gaming. With some tweaks to the graphics settings, you should have no problem achieving an average frame rate of 60 fps at that resolution.

The AMD Ryzen 5 Processor Tech Briefing

In this video, James Prior, Product Manager for AMD Client Desktop, reveals the key features and benefits of the new AMD Ryzen 5 processors, as well as the AMD AM4 motherboard chipsets.

Here are the key takeaway points :

  • The new AMD Zen core delivers 52% more instructions per clock than the previous generation Excavator core.
  • The AMD Ryzen 7 processors took on the Intel Core i7 Kaby Lake processors, delivering better performance at much lower price points.
  • The AMD Ryzen 5 processors, similarly, deliver better performance at lower price points, than their Intel Core i5 Kaby Lake rivals.
  • Unlike Intel Core processors, every AMD Ryzen processor is multiplier-unlocked for overclocking flexibility.
  • All desktop (non-SFF) AMD AM4 chipsets and motherboards feature native USB 3.1 Gen 2 support.
  • The AMD Ryzen 3 series will arrive in 2H 2017.

AMD just announced the new Radeon RX 500 Series graphics cards. Dubbed Polaris Refined, they run the same Polaris GPUs as the Radeon RX 480 graphics card. They basically offer higher clock speeds and/or additional Compute Units. There was one new model though – the entry-level Radeon RX 550.

The AMD Radeon RX 500 Series Tech Briefing

The AMD Radeon RX 500 Series is based on the same AMD Polaris architecture as the AMD Radeon RX 480. Here is Adam’s full presentation.

Here are the key takeaway points :

  • There will be four models – the Radeon RX 580, Radeon RX 570, Radeon RX 560 and the Radeon RX 550.

  • The Radeon RX 580 is a faster version of the Radeon RX 480, with a 137 MHz (12%) higher base clock, and a 74 MHz (6%) higher boost clock.
  • The Radeon RX 580 will be able to offer 60+ fps in most games running at 1440p, and 90+ fps in VR games.
  • The Radeon RX 570 is a faster version of the Radeon RX 470, with a 242 MHz (26%) higher base clock, and a 38 MHz (3%) higher boost clock.
  • The Radeon RX 570 will be able to offer 60+ fps in most games running at 1080p.

  • The Radeon RX 560 has 2 additional Compute Units than the Radeon RX 460, a faster version of the Radeon RX 470, with a 85 MHz (8%) higher base clock, and a 75 MHz (6%) higher boost clock.
  • The Radeon RX 560 will be able to offer 60+ fps in most games running at 1080p.
  • The Radeon RX 550 will offer a new lower price point in the Radeon RX family.
  • The Radeon RX 550 will have up to 8 Compute Units, with a boost clock of up to 1183 MHz, and a 128-bit memory interface with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory.
  • All Radeon RX 500 Series graphics cards will support Radeon Chill, which saves power and reduces heat while improving response time.

What Happened To AMD Vega?

We all know that the AMD Vega is coming in 2017. AMD briefed us on its GPU architecture, as well as its memory architecture. They also showed off an AMD Vega prototype running DOOM in 4K. So where the heck is it?

We gently prodded Adam who would only say that it’s “coming later” in 2017. With AMD introducing the Polaris Refined graphics cards in this new series, we think that they will most likely introduce the Vega-based graphics cards in late Q3, or early Q4 2017 to make it for 2017 Christmas sales.

In case you are wondering if AMD may have hit a snag with the Vega GPU, AMD is already using it in the AMD Radeon Instinct MI25 Vega accelerator. You can check out some Radeon Instinct servers using the Vega GPU.
