Samsung Odyssey Ark Gaming Monitor : A Quick Look!

Samsung recently gave us a closer look at the massive 55-inch Odyssey Ark curved gaming monitor!

Samsung Odyssey Ark Gaming Monitor : A Quick Look!

The Samsung Odyssey Ark gaming monitor is truly a gamer’s dream come true – a massive 55-inch display with a 1000R curvature, and a 165 Hz refresh rate!

It is now just a large gaming display, it’s chockfull of gaming-specific features like:

  • 4K display resolution, with 1 million to 1 contrast ratio, and HDR 10+ support
  • Up to 165 Hz refresh rate, with 1 ms (GTG) response time
  • Variable refresh rate support with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro
  • Quantum Mini-LED panel for next-generation colour depth and picture quality
  • sAGAR (Super Anti-Glare, Anti-Reflection) film reduces glare
  • Neural Quantum Processor Ultra automatically analyses each frame to improve image quality
  • Dolby Atmos with Sound Dome technology for immersive surround sound
  • Four corner speakers with two central woofers for a 60 watt 2.2.2 channel audio

It also comes with an exclusive Ark Dial that lets you quickly adjust screen size and ratio, to enjoy multiple content sources at the same time!

Even though it’s so large, the Samsung Odyssey Ark gaming monitor can be rotated clockwise to Cockpit Mode. It is not motorised but it’s not difficult to rotate the monitor.

In both vertical and horizontal orientations, its Multi View capability lets you take full advantage of its massive display by splitting it into sections.

You can add up to four screens in the standard landscape mode, and three screens in the vertical Cockpit Mode, allowing you to easily multitask. You can simultaneously game, while chatting on social media, or watching YouTube videos, all on the same display!

Carcassonne : Get It FREE For A Limited Time!

Carcassonne – the PC adaptation of the famous board game – is FREE for a limited time!

Find out how to get it FREE, and make sure you tell your friends!

If you missed this, well, next time join the Tech ARP Facebook page to get these updates quickly!

Carcassonne

Carcassonne is a modern classic tile-placement game based on the award wining game in which the players draw and place a tile with a piece of southern French landscape on it.

The tile might feature a city, a road, a cloister, grassland or some combination thereof, and it must be placed adjacent to tiles that have already been played, in such a way that cities are connected to cities, roads to roads, et cetera.

The player can then decide to place one of his followers, so called Meeples, on one of the areas on it: on the city as a knight, on the road as a robber, on a cloister as a monk, or on the grass as a farmer.

When that area is complete, that meeple scores points for its owner. Each new game is a new experience thanks to the ever-changing landscape.

Fun Tactical Gameplay

During a game of Carcassonne, players are faced with decisions like: “Is it really worth putting my last meeple there?” or “Should I use this tile to expand my city, or should I place it near my opponent instead, making it harder for him to complete his goal and score points?”

Since players place only one tile and have the option to place one meeple on it, turns proceed quickly even if it is a game full of options and possibilities.

Carcassonne : How To Get It Free!

[adrotate group=”2″]

From now until 14 February 2020, Carcassonne will be free to download and keep from the Epic Games store.

While two other Dell S-Series monitors also support HDR, the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) is the only model to meet the minimum requirements for the VESA DisplayHDR 400 standard. We will tell you more on this later in the article.

Dell S2719DM Price + Availability

The Dell S2719DM is available with immediate effect with a recommended retail price of RM 1,889 / US$499.99. If you are in the US, it’s currently on offer :

Unboxing The Dell S2719DM

The Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) may be ultra-thin, but it comes in a large box that weighs just over 8 kg. Typical Dell packaging – designed to take the worst of abuse by delivery services.

Inside the large box, you will find the following items :

  • One Dell S2719DM monitor with stand
  • Dell S2719DM User Guide and Safety and Regulatory Information
  • One 45 W Dell compact power adaptor with power cable
  • One HDMI 2.0 cable (1.8 m)

Note that the HDMI 2.0 cable is no different from your usual HDMI cable, just certified to support 4K video at 60 Hz. You can also use regular HDMI 1.4 cables just fine. More on this later in the article!

The Dell S2719DM Up Close!

In this review, we prepared two different videos. Our traditional hands-on look, and a more stylised feature overview. Do let us know which is better by liking the video you prefer!

In this video, we give you a quick look of the key features of the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) monitor.

As you can see, the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) is a very stylish ultra-thin monitor. Every aspect – from the sleek silver back to the gracefully curved stand – was designed with aesthetics in mind. This is not a monitor to be hidden in the back room!

The Dell S2719DM Key Features

In this video, we highlight the key features of the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) monitor. Do let us know if you prefer this video, or the one above!

InfinitiEdge Display

Dell calls it an InfinitiEdge display. Its bezel is just 7.1 mm at the top and sides, and only 8.1 mm at the bottom.

Concealed into the lower right edge are Power and OSD (On-Screen Display) control buttons. From left to right, they are :

  • Preset Modes : Use this button to choose from a list of preset colour modes
  • Brightness / Contrast : Use this button to directly access the Brightness and Contrast bars.
  • Menu : Use this button to launch the On-Screen Display (OSD) and select the OSD menu
  • Exit : Use this button to go back to the OSD main menu, or to exit the OSD main menu.
  • Power : Use this button to turn the monitor On or Off.

The Power button also doubles as a power mode indicator. A white LED light indicates the monitor is turned On and fully functional. A glowing white LED light indicates the monitor is on the DPMS Power Save Mode.

HDMI 2.0 Connectivity

If you need a plethora of connectivity options, the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) is NOT the monitor for you. To maintain its elegant design, and to keep costs low, there are only four ports – all centrally aligned right behind the stand.

For display input, you have only two HDMI 2.0 ports, so you will need adaptors if you have devices with DisplayPort or DVI output. Above these two HDMI ports are a 3.5 mm audio output port, and below them – the power port.

A HDMI 2.0 cable is included in the package. It is certified to support the higher 18 Gbits/s bandwidth necessary to support 4K video at 60 Hz. However, older HDMI 1.4 cables will work just fine because the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) only delivers 2560 x 1440 pixels at 60 Hz.

You may see new 48G HDMI cables being introduced. Those are only required to support HDMI 2.1 features, like increased bandwidth to support 10K video at 120 Hz and dynamic HDR. This monitor does not support those features, so there is no need to invest in the new, expensive 48G HDMI cables.

Ultra-Thin Design

The Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) was designed with aesthetics in mind. It has a very sleek design with ultra-thin edges that slope gently across the back. Even the stand uses the same elegant design language.

It thinnest at the sides – just 5.5 mm, and gently curves to 10 mm at the top midpoint, and 29 mm at the bottom. This clever design makes the S2719DM look exquisitely thin.

Fixed Hinged Stand

For what we believe are aesthetic reasons, the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) comes with a fixed hinged stand. If you are planning to mount your monitor on the wall, or a multi-monitor stand, you will have to consider another monitor.

The fixed hinged stand can tilt downwards by 5°, and upwards by 21°. However, it cannot swivel, and does not allow height adjustments. That’s the price you pay for such a slim and elegant curved stand.

Corning Iris Glass Light-Guide Plate

Edge-lit LED displays use a light-guide plate (LGP) to distribute light uniformly throughout the panel, Usually they are made up from pure PMMA resin, but such polymer LGPs can warp and expand with changes in heat and humidity. They therefore require a wider bezel, greater thickness and an air gap to account for movement and expansion.

To keep it thin and reduce the bezel size, the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) features the Corning Iris Glass Light-Guide Plate technology.

Because it’s made from glass, the Corning Iris Glass Light-Guide Plate is rigid. This removes the need for an air gap, and a thicker backlight, greatly reducing the thickness of the display. Its dimensional stability also ensures reliable transmission of light from the LED edge lighting.

Extra-Bright QHD Panel

The Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) has a QHD panel with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 – a popular resolution for both gaming and work. That is nothing special, of course. What lifts it above the crowd though is its brighter panel.

Many monitors of its class have a typical brightness of 250 to 350 nits. The Dell S2719DM (Price Check) boasts a typical brightness of 400 nits, with a peak brightness of 600 nits.

The increased brightness is not only about a brighter panel. Higher brightness is a critical aspect of the monitor’s HDR performance.

DisplayHDR 400

Many HDR-ready monitors support the open HDR10 format, but this does not mean that they are necessarily “true” HDR monitors. This is where the VESA DisplayHDR program comes in. It is a set of standards that HDR monitors should comply with, so that consumers can be guaranteed of certain levels of HDR performance.

The Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) is a VESA DisplayHDR 400-certified monitor, which means it has to meet or exceed these requirements :

  • Deliver true 8-bit image quality – on par with top 15% of PC displays today
  • Support global dimming for better dynamic contrast ratio
  • Have a peak luminance of 400 cd/m2 or better – up to 50% higher than typical SDR
  • Minimum requirements for color gamut and contrast exceed SDR (95% of sRGB)

The Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) exceeds those requirements with a peak luminance of 600 cd/m2, and a colour gamut of over 99% sRGB. However, it does not support local dimming, and is thus considered to be an entry-level HDR monitor.

sRGB Colour Gamut

The Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) supports a colour gamut of over over 99% sRGB, and 85% DCI-P3. What’s the difference between the sRGB and DCI-P3 colour spaces? Take a look.

Don’t get confused by the two numbers. What they basically mean is that the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) is essentially an sRGB monitor. It may offer an almost 100% sRGB coverage, which is better than many sRGB monitors, but you will need to look elsewhere if you need your monitor to support a wider colour gamut like Adobe RGB.

AMD FreeSync

Dell does not mention this, but the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) monitor supports AMD FreeSync. When used with AMD graphics cards and APUs, the monitor will dynamically adjust the refresh rate to prevent tearing and stuttering.

While the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) has a vertical scan range of 48 Hz to 75 Hz, it is limited to 60 Hz at its native 2560 x 1440 resolution. As long as the frame rate of your games are 48 fps or higher, FreeSync will ensure that they are tear-free.

Our Verdict

The Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) is a work of art. It is not only incredibly thin, it is really sleek and sexy. Quite unlike the utilitarian design of the traditional Dell monitors. It was obviously designed to be proudly displayed in public, not hidden in an office.

In addition to its slim form factor, the S2719DM also has very thin bezels, qualifying it as an InfinityEdge display. This allows for a more immersive working or gaming experience, especially when you plan to use two or three of them together.

The Dell S2719DM has some gaming chops, even though it is not a gaming monitor. It supports AMD FreeSync, albeit with a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz at its native resolution. It won’t match the high refresh rates and low response time of gaming monitors, but it will do just fine for gaming after a hard day’s work.

It is also a VESA DisplayHDR 400-certified monitor, although this is the most basic HDR certification. It lacks local dimming capability, which is necessary to deliver deeper blacks.

It is also important to point out that the Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) has a typical brightness of 400 nits, with a peak brightness of 600 nits. This is much brighter than typical WQHD monitors, which is not only important for HDR, but also allows for better image quality in bright environments.

Its sleek design comes with some disadvantages though. The fixed hinged stand, which looks great, does not allow for changes in the display height. Heck, it doesn’t even swivel. All it can do is tilt downwards by 5°, and upwards by 21°. This is the price you have to pay for such a sleek design.

[adrotate group=”2″]

The other problem – its limited connectivity options. It only comes with two HDMI ports. While HDMI is, no doubt, common and supported by practically all computers and media players, a DisplayPort or a mini-DP port would have been most welcomed.

This is particularly important for those who intend to use two or more of these monitors – most graphics cards come with just one HDMI port, but two or more DisplayPorts. With only HDMI input, you will need a DP-to-HDMI converter for the second and third monitors.

But if you can live with these relatively minor disadvantages, you can literally have your cake and eat it too. The Dell S2719DM (Malaysia | US | UK) offers a great combination of features and capabilities in a beautiful package.

As such, we feel it deserves no less than our Reviewer’s Choice Award. Great job on the S2719DM!

The BenQ Eye-Care Monitor Technologies Explained!

BenQ just revealed a slew of new Eye-Care monitors with new Eye-Care technologies built-in. But what do the new Brightness Intelligence Plus and Low Blue Light Plus technologies mean to you – the user? Read and find out everything you need to know about the BenQ Eye-Care monitor technologies!

The BenQ Eye-Care Monitor Technologies

BenQ’s Brian Lee and Jim Y Yang explain the new BenQ Eye-Care monitor technologies, and why they are important for those who want a comfortable viewing experience.

Brightness Intelligence and Brightness Intelligence Plus

The BenQ Brightness Intelligence (BI) technology automatically detects the brightness of the ambient lighting, and automatically adjusts the display brightness to match. This not only helps to ensure a comfortable viewing experience, it also helps to reduce power consumption.

The Brightness Intelligence Plus (BI+) technology improves on that by also detecting and adjusting for colour temperature. This takes care of mixed-colour lighting, as well as the changing colour temperature of natural sunlight.

Low Blue Light and Low Blue Light Plus

BenQ’s exclusive Low Blue Light technology eliminates blue light in the 420-480 nm spectrum to reduce damage to the eye.

The Low Blue Light Plus technology takes that up a notch by reducing blue light in the 420-455 nm spectrum, while preventing a colour shift to yellow, allowing for more accurate colour reproduction.

Flicker-Free

The BenQ Flicker-Free technology is certified by TÜV Rheinland to eliminate the monitor flicker that is present in other monitors. Even though other monitors may refresh at very high rates, they still result in imperceptible flicker that cause stress to the eyes during long use.

AMD FreeSync

This is an AMD technology that eliminates image tearing, broken frames and choppy gameplay for a smoother gaming experience, when used with AMD graphics cards.

What’s With The Limited Edition?

As the specifications show, the Limited Edition cards do not offer higher clock speeds, so what’s special about them? Why pay US$50 extra for them? Here’s why…

The Limited Edition cards are AMD’s version of the NVIDIA Founders Edition graphics cards – the pinnacle of graphics card engineering. It features a solid metal shroud with a 240 grit brushed finish. Inside is a 30 mm fan mated to an isothermic vapour chamber.

There is also some bling in the form of an illuminated Vega logo in the middle of the shroud, and a Radeon pixel at the upper right corner.

HDR Gaming

The big story though is Radeon FreeSync 2 and the next killer feature it enables – HDR gaming.

Current monitors are mostly built around the sRGB colour space, which limits the richness and vibrancy of the scene. Colours look dull and washed out, and details are lost in the shadows and highlights.

New HDR transport technologies like HDR10 and Dolby Vision aim to solve this limitation, offering 8X or better perceivable range of the sRGB colour space. They also make much better use of the display’s maximum brightness levels, which are left unused in sRGB mode.

There is a problem with both HDR10 and Dolby Vision though – they are not optimised for gaming. The tone mapping performed by these displays has a long input lag.

This input lag is not a problem for cinematic movies or video clips that render at 24 to 30 fps. However, it will be a problem for gamers who want high frame rates of 60 fps or better. AMD attempts to address both problems through Radeon FreeSync 2.

Introducing Radeon FreeSync 2

Optimised for HDR gaming, Radeon FreeSync 2 is a compromise between the wider colour gamut of HDR10 / Dolby Vision, and the low input lag of sRGB.

It offers a limited HDR colour gamut that is over 2X the perceivable brightness and colour volume of sRGB. The FreeSync 2 game can then tone-map to the display’s native colour space. This allows the monitor to skip the tone mapping step, which greatly reduces the input lag.

For this to work, both the monitor and the game must support FreeSync 2. Here are some characteristics of a FreeSync 2 monitor :

  • Low Framerate Compensation (LFC) is mandatory
  • Low Latency is mandatory
  • The monitor will provide its native characteristics to the game through the FreeSync 2 Transport

For game support, AMD will provide a FreeSync 2 API that will :

  • support the FP16, 2-10-10-10 colour buffer formats
  • automatically switch between sRGB and FreeSync 2 native modes (when a FreeSync 2 game loads)

All AMD Radeon GPUs will support FreeSync 2 via a new driver. However, it won’t be in the recently launched Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition.

When Will FreeSync 2 Be Available?

AMD will launch Radeon FreeSync 2 in 2017. They are aiming to get it out by the first half of 2017, but there is no firm date yet.

Will FreeSync 2 Replace FreeSync?

No, Radeon FreeSync 2 will exist in parallel with FreeSync. FreeSync 2 will merely be a higher standard that offers HDR gaming, on top of stutter- and tear-free gaming.

The Samsung CFG70 Curved Quantum Dot Monitor Revealed

Samsung just launched the Samsung CFG70 gaming monitor (Amazon / Lazada) – the world’s first curved quantum dot gaming monitor! The Samsung CFG70 marks Samsung’s return to the competitive gaming monitor market, with the introduction of quantum dot technology and one of the fastest moving picture response time (MPRT) performance in the industry.

In this article, Samsung will reveal the key features of the Samsung CFG70 curved quantum dot gaming monitor (Amazon / Lazada), and we will give you a quick tour of the Samsung CFG70!

The Samsung CFG70 Gaming Monitor Key Features

Samsung will offer the Samsung CFG70 (Amazon / Lazada) monitor in 24″ and 27″ models, but they will both boast the same features like a 125% sRGB colour space and a 144 Hz refresh rate. In this video, Erik Tanuwidjaja, Samsung Regional Product Manager explains the Samsung CFG70 monitor’s key features.

Its 125% sRGB colour space will come in real handy when AMD FreeSync 2 is released. It would allow you to enjoy HDR gaming with the Samsung CFG70 (Amazon / Lazada)!

Comfortable & Immersive Viewing

The Samsung CFG70’s “Super Arena” design, features an industry-best 1,800R curvature and a 178° ultra-wide viewing angle, which matches the natural curve of the human eye. It also boasts complementary sound-interactive LED lighting.

Fast Speed and Smooth Game Play

By combining Samsung’s advanced motion blur reduction technology with its VA panel, the Samsung CFG70 is the first curved monitor to produce a 1 ms moving picture response time (MPRT). The rapid MPRT rate reduces display transitions between moving and animated objects, and in turn eliminates potential visual distractions.

The Samsung CFG70 (Amazon / Lazada) also leverages its integrated AMD FreeSync Technology over HDMI functionality to synchronize the screen’s 144Hz refresh rate with users’ AMD graphics cards. This connectivity minimizes image tearing, input latency and stutter that can disrupt gameplay and escalate visual fatigue.

Optimized Gaming Experience

Samsung also equipped the CFG70 with a range of user-friendly gaming UX that drives more convenient and easily-accessible game management. The Samsung CFG70 (Amazon / Lazada) includes a dedicated gaming interface with an intuitive settings dashboard to better allow gamers to modify and personalize their gameplay settings. Each CFG70 monitor also offers a series of hotkeys on the front and back of the display for users to easily adjust gameplay settings.

To further inspire gamer immersion and bring out the best in even the most complex game designs, including compatibility with the FPS, RTS, RPG and AOS genres, each CFG70 monitor undergoes rigorous pre-shipment factory calibration. This process optimizes various settings, including contrast ratios, black gamma levels for enhanced brightness and white balance levels for temperature management. As a result, gamers can enjoy a sharp and brilliant picture regardless of the game in play.

Lenovo Y27f Curved Gaming Monitor

AMD FreeSync technology helps ensure smooth and fluid gameplay. AMD FreeSync technology enhances communication between the Lenovo Y27f Curved Gaming Monitor and an AMD FreeSync-capable GPU, allowing the display to dynamically adapt its refresh rate in alignment with the GPU’s creation of new frames.

This prevents tearing by ensuring no new frames are drawn during the refresh period. FreeSync also eliminates stuttering, since the refresh rate is locked to the creation of new frames. FreeSync is supported on a wide range of AMD Radeon GPUs, including the recently launched Polaris architecture-based Radeon RX Series graphics cards.

“Our latest monitor, the Lenovo Y27f Curved Gaming Monitor, is optimized for gaming,” said Li Jun Su, Executive Director and General Manager of Visuals BU, PC & Smart Device Business Group, Lenovo. “AMD FreeSync technology along with a fast 144 Hz refresh rate eliminates screen tearing, and minimizes display stutter, input lag and motion blur to display more natural movement. Combined with full high definition 1920 x 1080 resolution and the most extreme curved display to date, the monitor provides our customers with the smoothest possible gaming and a great experience.”

“With AMD FreeSync technology, the new Lenovo Y27f provides truly immersive gaming,” said Raja Koduri, senior vice president and chief architect, Radeon Technologies Group. “The monitor is an excellent choice for both casual and competitive gamers that depend on low latency, high framerates, and an ultra-smooth experience powered by AMD FreeSync technology.”

The Lenovo Y27f Curved Gaming Monitor is available now starting at SEP $399 USD.
