AMD Athlon Gold 3150C + Athlon Silver 3050C Revealed!

AMD just introduced the Athlon Gold 3150C and Athlon Silver 3050C mobile processors with Radeon Graphics!

Here is what you need to know about the new AMD Athlon 3000 C-Series mobile APUs!

 

Athlon Gold 3150C + Athlon Silver 3050C : Zen Comes To Chromebooks!

The two new AMD Athlon 3000 C-Series mobile processors come with integrated Radeon Graphics cores. That makes them APUs, instead of pure processors.

Built on the older Zen architecture and fabricated on the 14 nm process technology, they are designed to power Chromebooks.

At launch, AMD is introducing these two Athlon 3000 C-Series processors, both with a 15 W TDP :

  • AMD Athlon Gold 3150C : 2C/4T | up to 3.3 GHz | 5 MB cache | 3 graphics cores
  • AMD Athlon Silver 3050C : 2C/2T | up to 3.2 GHz | 5 MB cache | 2 graphics cores

These Athlon 3000 C-Series processors will be used in mid-level Chromebooks, offering better performance than the old AMD A-Series APUs, but less than the AMD Ryzen 3000 C-Series processors.

The AMD A-Series APUs, with a 6 W TDP, will continue to ship in entry-level Chromebooks.

Although they are not part of these processors, Chromebooks based on the AMD Athlon 3000 C-Series will feature Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 connectivity.

Athlon Gold 3150C + Athlon Silver 3050C : Availability

AMD will only say that their partners – HP, ASUS and Lenovo – will introduce six Chromebook laptops in 2020, powered by the new Ryzen and Athlon 3000 C-Series APUs.

No specifics about the models and choice of processor yet. We will keep you updated when we learn more.

These Athlon PRO models are part of the 3rd Gen Ryzen processor family, and based on the AMD Zen 2 architecture.

At launch, AMD is introducing three Athlon 4000 G-Series processors :

AMD Athlon PRO 3000 Series : Price + Availability

Unfortunately, all three Athlon PRO desktop APUs will be limited to the OEM market initially.

AMD does not plan to introduce them to the retail market, until later. So there is no information on their price or retail availability.

AMD expects desktops with these processors to ship from system integrators starting today, 21 July 2020, and from AMD OEM partners like Lenovo and HP starting in Q4 2020.

AMD Athlon 3000 Mobile Processors : A Quick Primer!

The AMD Athlon 3000 mobile processors appears to be a rehash of last year’s Athlon 300 mobile processor.

It maintains the same 15W TDP, with the same 2-core, 4-thread configuration, as well as integrated Radeon Vega Graphics.

AMD is introducing two new SKUs – the Athlon Gold 3150U and the Athlon Silver 3050U.

There is nothing new about the Athlon 3000 mobile processors. From what we can tell, the AMD Athlon Gold 3150U is a renamed Athlon 300U from last year.

The AMD Athlon Silver 3050U, on the other hand, not only has 100 MHz lower base and boost clocks, it also removes support for simultaneous multi-threading.

AMD Athlon 3000 Mobile Processor Performance

AMD is targeting the Athlon Gold 3150U at the Intel Pentium Gold 5405U mobile processor. Here is how they compare, based on AMD’s internal tests :

The AMD Athlon Gold 3150U’s performance advantage over the Intel Pentium Gold 5405U varies between 39% and 90%.

But we should point out that the Pentium Gold 5405U has a fixed 2.3 GHz clock speed, and half the L2 and L3 cache.

Introducing The AMD Athlon 3000G

The AMD Raven Ridge soldiers on for one more hurrah! Introducing the AMD Athlon 3000G in this video is Don Woligroski, AMD Desktop Processor Technical Marketing Manager.

 

AMD Athlon 3000G : The Last Raven Ridge APU!

The 3000G is what AMD calls an Accelerated Processing Unit, because it combines a processor with a graphics processor in a single die.

It comes with two Zen processor cores that are capable of handling four simultaneous threads, and a Radeon Vega 3 GPU with 12 texture units and 4 ROPs.

Priced at just US$49, the Athlon 3000G has a fixed 3.5 GHz clock speed, with a 35 W TDP. It comes with a 1 MB L2 cache and a 4 MB L3 cache. Unlike earlier Raven Ridge APUs though, the 3000G has been unlocked for overclocking.

However, this will be the (last and) only Raven Ridge Athlon to be released this year, so don’t expect a higher clocked part. Don Woligroski confirmed this in the Q&A session (see this video)

How Fast Is The AMD Athlon 3000G?

AMD is targeting the 3000G against the Intel Pentium G5400, which retails at $73 – almost 50% higher.

According to AMD’s benchmarks, it will offer better performance across the board, at ⅔ of the cost.

Because it’s very similar to last year’s Athlon 240GE, AMD unlocked the 3000G to allow for easier overclocking.

If you overclock it by 400 MHz to 3.9 GHz, you will see even better performance over the Intel Pentium G5400 :

 

AMD Athlon 3000G Price + Availability

The AMD Athlon 3000G has a recommended retail price of just US$49 / RM209, and it will be available for purchase from 19 November 2019 onwards.

AMD Athlon APU with Radeon Vega Graphics

The AMD Athlon APU with Radeon Vega Graphics is what AMD calls an Accelerated Processing Unit, because it combines a processor with a graphics processor in a single die.

In the Athlon APU’s case, it is basically a cut-down version of the AMD Raven Ridge APUs launched in February 2018. It combines a Ryzen CPU with a Radeon Vega graphics processor.

 

What Are The New AMD Athlon APU Models?

AMD officially launched only one Athlon APU on 6 September 2018 – the AMD Athlon 200GE with Radeon Vega 3 Graphics. It has two Zen processor cores that is capable of handling four simultaneous threads, with three Radeon Vega Graphics compute units.

Priced at just US$55, the Athlon 200GE has a fixed 3.2 GHz clock speed, with a 35 W TDP. It comes with a 1 MB L2 cache and a 4 MB L3 cache.

AMD also announced that the AMD Athlon 220GE and Athlon 240GE models (specifications unknown) will be released sometime in Q4 2018.

 

What Motherboards Does It Support?

The AMD Athlon APU with Radeon Vega Graphics runs on the AMD AM4 platform. So you can upgrade your existing AM4 system with the new Athlon APU (with a BIOS upgrade).

Although AMD did not explicitly mention it, the AMD Athlon APU with Radeon Vega Graphics most likely supports the faster DDR4-2933 memory, so it may pay to upgrade to a newer motherboard that supports the higher DDR4 memory speed.

Where Does The AMD Athlon APU Fit In?

The AMD Athlon APU with Radeon Vega Graphics is meant to be a basic processor option with basic graphics capabilities. It slots in below the AMD Ryzen 3 CPU and APU models, and competes directly against the Intel Pentium and Celeron models.

With just two Zen cores and three Vega CUs, it’s definitely not meant for serious gaming. But it will be more than powerful enough to power a family computer, or a cheap office PC.

How Fast Is The AMD Athlon APU?

AMD pit their Athlon 200GE against the Intel Pentium G4560. A couple of differences to note :

  • The Athlon 200GE runs at 3.2 GHz, while the Pentium G4560 runs at 3.5 GHz.
  • The Athlon 200GE has 5 MB of L2 and L3 cache, while the Pentium G4560 only has a 2 MB L2 cache.
  • The Athlon 200GE runs a 35 W TDP, while the Pentium G4560 has a 54 W TDP.
  • The Athlon 200GE supports DDR4-2933 memory, while the Pentium G4560 only supports DDR4-2400 memory.

The AMD Athlon 200GE was roughly equal to the Pentium G4560 in CPU performance, but has 67% better graphics performance with a 35% lower TDP. AMD estimates that this mades the Athlon 200GE 2X more efficient than the Pentium G4560.

 

A Generational Boost From Zen

Here are more benchmark comparison (sadly with no actual numbers) comparing the Athlon 200GE against the Pentium G4560, and the previous-generation AMD A6-9500E APU. The Athlon 200GE is notably twice as fast as the A6-9500E.

 

Can You Game On The AMD Athlon APU?

Well, you can… if you are satisfied with your games running at 720p. Still, it is far better than what’s possible with the processor graphics of the Intel Pentium G4560 or the A6-9500E APU.

You can boost its gaming performance with a discrete graphics card, although it will be hobbled a little by its PCIe x8 support (instead of PCIe x16).

In this test, AMD used the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050. The Intel Pentium G4560 was a little faster, but requires more power.

 

AMD Athlon APU Price + Availability

The AMD Athlon 200GE is priced at US$ 55, and will be available from global retailers and system integrators starting 18 September 2018, while the Athlon 220GE and 240GE processor models are slated for launch in Q4 2018.

MP Capable Bit Identify from The Tech ARP BIOS Guide

This BIOS feature determines if the BIOS should query the MP Capable bit to correctly identify an AMD Athlon MP processor.

When set to Enabled, the BIOS will query the MP Capable bit at boot-up. If it detects a MP Capable bit setting of 1, it writes the Athlon MP processor string name into the appropriate registers.

When set to Disabled, the BIOS will not query the MP Capable bit at boot-up. The Athlon MP processor will be indistinguishable from the Athlon XP processor, as far as the processor identification is concerned.

If you are using an AMD Athlon MP processor, it is recommended that you enable this BIOS feature to allow proper identification of the processor.

If you are using other Athlon processors, you should disable this BIOS feature as there is no need to identify multi-processing capability.

 

Details of MP Capable Bit Identify

There are a few flavours of the AMD Athlon processor, namely the Duron, Athlon XP, Athlon MP and the mobile Athlon XP (Athlon XP-M). However, they all have the same CPUID. So, processor identification has to be done on the basis of clock speed and L2 cache size variations. This is not a problem for the Duron and Athlon XP-M processors.

Unfortunately, there is nothing to distinguish the Athlon MP from the Athlon XP. Neither clock speed or L2 cache size can be used to differentiate the two processors.

In addition, AMD did not hardcode the processor name string into the AMD Athlon processors. The BIOS actually detects the processor model during the boot-up process and writes the appropriate name string into the processor. So, the Athlon MP cannot be detected by querying the processor name string.

The only thing that truly distinguishes the Athlon MP processor from the Athlon XP processor is its multi-processing capability.

To solve this problem, AMD used bit 19 of Athlon’s Extended Feature Flags to denote multi-processing capability. That’s why it is also known as the MP Capable bit, MP being short for multi-processing.

This bit is set to 0 in the Athlon XP processors and set to 1 in the Athlon MP processors. Below is a table of the MP Capable bit settings for the different AMD Athlon processors.

Therefore, if the BIOS detects a processor with the MP Capable bit set to 1, it writes the processor name string of AMD Athlon ™ MP into the processor.

This BIOS feature determines if the BIOS should query the MP Capable bit to correctly identify an AMD Athlon MP processor.

When set to Enabled, the BIOS will query the MP Capable bit at boot-up. If it detects a MP Capable bit setting of 1, it writes the Athlon MP processor string name into the appropriate registers.

Confirmed : AMD K10 And K8 Processors Also Vulnerable To Spectre

It is common knowledge that the latest AMD Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 are vulnerable to the Spectre exploits, and so are the older AMD processors based on their Bulldozer microarchitecture. But what about the AMD K10 and K8 processors? Today, we can confirm that AMD K10 and K8 processors from as far back as 2003 are vulnerable to Spectre.

 

AMD K10 And K8 Processors Are Also Vulnerable To Spectre

AMD has been transparent about how AMD processors are vulnerable to both Spectre exploits, and their mitigation strategies. However, they have never revealed which AMD processors are affected by the Spectre exploits.

While it was common knowledge that the latest AMD Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3, as well as the Bulldozer-based APUs are vulnerable to Spectre, no one knew for sure whether the older AMD K10 and K8 processors were also affected. After all, they were based on a different microarchitecture.

That was until they revealed their Spectre mitigation strategies. Hidden in their whitepaper were references to AMD Family 10h (also known as AMD K10), as well as AMD Family 0Fh (also known as AMD K8).

So we now know, for sure, that the AMD K10 and AMD K8 processors are also vulnerable to Spectre.

 

What Are The Affected AMD K10 & K8 Processors?

The AMD K10 family alone adds 96 AMD server CPUs, 168 AMD desktop CPUs, and 77 AMD mobile CPUs to the list of vulnerable processors.

The AMD K8 family adds a further 128 AMD server CPUs, 137 AMD desktop CPUs, and 57 AMD mobile CPUs to the list.

These Windows 10 Updates Are Bricking AMD PCs! Rev. 4.0

Microsoft has stopped pushing a number of Windows 10 updates, including the Meltdown and Spectre mitigation patches, because they were bricking some AMD PCs. Frustrated users were left with their AMD PCs in an unbootable state after installing those updates. The cure was, in this case, worse than the disease!

Updated @ 2018-01-16 : Added another affected CPU, a new section on Microsoft’s confusing statement, and a new section on what you should do.

These Windows 10 Updates Are Bricking AMD PCs!

Following reports of users unable to boot up their AMD PCs after applying Windows 10 updates, Microsoft has identified the following security patches and updates from 3-9 January 2018 as the culprits :

In the affected AMD systems, the Windows logo will appear after the PC reboots to complete the upgrade process. However, it won’t complete the boot process.

There has been at least one case each involving the newer Ryzen 7 and Threadripper processors, but these are outliers. So far, this issue affects mostly older AMD Athlon processors. However, there

Needless to say, the list above is NOT EXHAUSTIVE. We will update the list, as and when, people report them.

On 11 January 2018, AMD stated that the problem affected AMD Opteron, Athlon and Turion X2 Ultra processors.

 

How Did This Happen?

Microsoft is blaming documentation from AMD, stating that some AMD chipsets do not conform to the documentation previously provided to Microsoft to develop the Windows operating system mitigations to protect against the chipset vulnerabilities known as Spectre and Meltdown.

Technically, Meltdown and Spectre are CPU, not chipset, vulnerabilities. So Microsoft was probably referring to CPU documentation provided by AMD.

 

What Is Being Done?

Because Windows 10 forcibly installs updates, Microsoft has temporarily stopped pushing those Windows 10 updates to the affected AMD processors. They’re now working with AMD to correct the problem with those patches.

According to AMD, the new patches will be issued sometime in the week of 15-21 January 2018. At the time of this update (16 January 2018), the new patches have not been released.

 

Microsoft’s Confusing Statement New!

Microsoft invited some confusion when they stated on 11 January 2018 that “Microsoft has resumed updating the majority of AMD devices with the Windows operating system security update to help protect against the chipset vulnerabilities known as Spectre and Meltdown.

As far as we can tell – they only resumed Windows 10 updates for the AMD CPUs that are NOT affected by this problem. They merely identified the affected subset of AMD CPUs, and only blocked updates to them – “A small subset of older AMD processors remain blocked to avoid users getting into an unbootable state after installation of recent Windows operating system security updates.

 

Should You Install Windows 10 Updates? New!

As Microsoft claims to have accurately determined which subset of AMD CPUs are affected, it is theoretically safe to continue installing Windows 10 updates. Windows 10 should be able to identify your CPU and block the updates if it’s one of the affected models.

That said, there is still NO RISK of a Meltdown or Spectre attack. For all of the hype and panic, there are no know exploits of the speculative execution bug in the wild. The Meltdown and Spectre exploits also require physical access to the system.

So we still think it is better to be safe than sorry and HOLD OFF your Windows 10 updates, if you have an OLDER AMD CPU, until Microsoft releases the proper patches in the next few days.

The memory clock speed of AMD Athlon 64 / Opteron processors is determined using this formula :

Memory Clock Speed = Processor Clock Speed / Memory Divisor

But instead of giving you the option of selecting any memory divisor you want, each Athlon 64 / Opteron processor has a fixed number of divisors designed to meet compatible memory standards. You can, of course, select any memory divisor you like even if you are using slower memory modules. However, it is still quite frustrating as each processor only comes with three memory divisors.

Perhaps with that in mind, AMD implemented a new feature called Odd Divisor Correct in all Athlon 64 / Opteron processors from Revision E onwards. It automatically rounds up any odd memory divisor to the next number, which is always an even number. It has no effect if the memory divisor is already an even number.

The odd memory divisor is always rounded up, thereby resulting in a lower memory clock speed. This rounding-up is done quietly in the background. So, you will not realize that your processor is using a higher memory divisor, unless you actually benchmark and compare your memory system’s performance.

While it may sound like a useless feature, it can be used to gives you additional memory divisors that would not have existed otherwise. In the example of the Athlon 64 X2 6000+, enabling this feature would give you an extra memory divisor of 10 (when you select a divisor of 9).

As such, Odd Divisor Correct is mainly a feature for overclockers. Judiciously enabling and disabling this feature will give you one or more additional memory divisors to play with. The number of extra memory divisors you can obtain using this feature depends entirely on the number of odd memory divisors in your processor.

However, if you do not overclock, you should disable this BIOS feature. Enabling it certainly will not improve performance. In fact, it will do quite the opposite.

 

Details of Odd Divisor Correct

The memory clock speed of AMD Athlon 64 / Opteron processors is determined using this formula :

But instead of giving you the option of selecting any memory divisor you want, each Athlon 64 / Opteron processor has a fixed number of divisors designed to meet compatible memory standards. Socket 939/940 processors come with divisors that allow them to support PC2100, PC2700 and PC3200 DDR memory, while Socket AM2 processors have divisors that support PC2-4200, PC2-5300 and PC2-6400 DDR2 memory.

If we take the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ processor with a clock speed of 3000 MHz as an example, it has memory divisors of 12, 9 and 8. These allow it to support the following memory speeds :

Memory Clock Speed = 3000 MHz / 12 = 250 MHz (500 MHz DDR)
Memory Clock Speed = 3000 MHz / 9 = 333 MHz (667 MHz DDR)
Memory Clock Speed = 3000 MHz / 8 = 375 MHz (750 MHz DDR)

As you can see, the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ processor’s memory divisors won’t allow you to achieve the full potential of PC2-4200 (533MHz DDR) or PC2-6400 (800MHz DDR) memory. This is because all Athlon 64 / Opteron memory divisors must be whole numbers.

The only way to reach the proper memory clock speed would be to overclock the processor. For the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ processor to run with a 400MHz memory clock, you will need to overclock the processor to 3200MHz.

You can, of course, select any memory divisor you like even if you are using slower memory modules. For example, you can use the memory divisor of 8 with PC2-5300 memory, essentially running them at 375MHz instead of 333MHz. However, it is still quite frustrating as each processor only comes with three memory divisors.

Perhaps with that in mind, AMD implemented a new feature called Odd Divisor Correct in all Athlon 64 / Opteron processors from Revision E onwards. When there’s an instruction cache miss, the sequential prefetch mechanism in affected processors may incorrectly prefetch the next sequential cache line. This may cause the processor to hang. Affected 64-bit processors that run 32-bit applications may end up executing incorrect code.

K7 CLK_CTL Select – The BIOS Optimization Guide

K7 CLK_CTL Select

As the name suggests, this is an AMD-specific BIOS feature. It controls the Clock Control (CLK_CTL) Model Specific Register (MSR) which is part of the AMD Athlon’s power management control system.

The older Athlons have a bug that causes the system to hang, when the processor overshoots the nominal clock speed while recovering from a power-saving session. Hence, a workaround for this bug was devised whereupon the BIOS will manually reprogram the CLK_CTL register to reduce the ramp-up time.

By default, the BIOS programs the CLK_CTL register with a value of 6003_1223h during the POST routine. To increase the ramp-up speed, the BIOS has to change the value to 2003_1223h.

This is where the K7 CLK_CTL Select BIOS feature comes in. When set to Default, the BIOS will program the CLK_CTL register with a value of 6003_1223h. Setting to Optimal causes the BIOS to program the CLK_CTL register with a value of 2003_1223h.

If you are using an AMD Athlon processor with a Palomino or older core, it is recommended that you set K7 CLK_CTL Select to Optimal. This will prevent the bug from manifesting itself and may even provide a speed boost by allowing the processor to disconnect and connect to the system bus faster.

From the Thoroughbred-A core (CPUID 680) onwards, AMD started using an internal clock divider of only 1/8 with the CLK_CTL value of 6003_1223h. This neatly circumvents the Errata No. 11 problem, although AMD also corrected that bug. With such processors, the CLK_CTL should be set to the Default value of 6003_1223h.

Unfortunately, AMD then did an about-turn with the Thoroughbred-B core (CPUID 681) and changed the value associated with the 1/8 divider from 6003_1223h to 2003_1223h. Unless the BIOS was updated to recognize this difference, it would probably write the 6003_1223h value used for the Thoroughbred-A core into the register, instead of the correct 2003_1223h required by the Thoroughbred-B core. When this happens, the processor may become unstable during transitions from sleep mode to active mode.

Therefore, for Throughbred-B cores and above, you should set the K7 CLK_CTL Select BIOS feature to Optimal setting to ensure proper setting of the internal clock divider.

 

Details

As the name suggests, this is an AMD-specific BIOS feature. It controls the Clock Control (CLK_CTL) Model Specific Register (MSR) which is part of the AMD Athlon’s power management control system.

First of all, we should be aware that the AMD Athlon family of processors has four different power management states :-

Working State (C0)
Halt State (C1)
Stop Grant States (C2 and S1)
Probe State

The Athlon processor can switch to its power-saving mode when it is in the Halt state or one of the Stop Grant states. In those power management states, the processor will send a HLT or STPCLK# special bus cycle to the north bridge which disconnects the Athlon system bus. The processor will then enter into its power saving mode.

Unlike the Intel Pentium 4 processor, the AMD Athlon processor saves power by actually reducing its internal clock speed. The Athlon bus clock speed remains constant but by using an internal clock divider, the Athlon processor can reduce its internal clock speed to 1/64th (Palomino cores and older) or 1/8th (Thoroughbred cores and newer) of its nominal clock speed. That means a 2.0GHz Athlon processor with a Palomino or older core will have an internal clock speed of only 31.25 MHz in power saving mode! But if the same processor has a Thoroughbred core, the internal clock speed in power saving mode will be 250 MHz.

As you can see, the older Athlon cores run at a much lower internal speed compared to the newer cores. This translates into a much lower power consumption in power-saving modes. For example, Athlon processors with Palomino cores use only 0.86 W of power in power saving mode. In contrast, the newer Athlon Thoroughbred-B processors in power saving mode will consume about 8.9 W of power. However, the extremely low internal clock speed in the older Athlon cores meant that these cores will take a much longer time to ramp up to full clock speed when it “awakes” from its power saving mode. This can sometimes cause problems.

The older Athlons have a bug (Errata No. 11) called PLL Overshoot on Wake-Up from Disconnect Causes Auto-Compensation Circuit to Fail. What happens is the processor can sometimes overshoot the nominal clock speed when it ramps up after a power-saving session. This causes a reduction in the Athlon bus’ I/O drive strength levels which the auto-compensation circuitry will attempt to correct. But because there is not enough time, the proper drive strengths cannot be attained before the processor reconnects to the system bus. This causes the system bus to fail, which results in a system hang.

This bug is particularly prominent in the older Athlons that use the 1/64 internal divider because they normally require a longer ramp-up time which increases the chance for the processor to overshoot the nominal clock speed. Hence, a workaround for this bug was devised whereupon the BIOS will manually reprogram the CLK_CTL register to reduce the ramp-up time. With a reduced ramp-up time, there will be very little chance of the processor overshooting and causing a failure of the system bus.

By default, the BIOS programs the CLK_CTL register with a value of 6003_1223h during the POST routine. To increase the ramp-up speed, the BIOS has to change the value to 2003_1223h.

If you are using an AMD Athlon processor with a Palomino or older core, it is recommended that you set K7 CLK_CTL Select to Optimal. This will prevent Errata No. 11 from manifesting itself and may even provide a speed boost by allowing the processor to disconnect and connect to the system bus faster.

From the Thoroughbred-A core (CPUID 680) onwards, AMD started using an internal clock divider of only 1/8 with the CLK_CTL value of 6003_1223h. While this means that the newer cores will consume more power during power-saving states, the 1/8 divider allows a much faster ramp-up time. This neatly circumvents the Errata No. 11 problem although AMD also corrected that bug. With such processors, the CLK_CTL should be set to the Default value of 6003_1223h.

Unfortunately, AMD then did an about-turn with the Thoroughbred-B core (CPUID 681) and changed the value associated with the 1/8 divider from 6003_1223h to 2003_1223h. Unless the BIOS was updated to recognize this difference, it would probably write the 6003_1223h value used for the Thoroughbred-A core into the register, instead of the correct 2003_1223h required by the Thoroughbred-B core. When this happens, the processor may become unstable during transitions from sleep mode to active mode.

Therefore, for Throughbred-B cores and above, you should set the K7 CLK_CTL Select BIOS feature to Optimal setting to ensure proper setting of the internal clock divider.

Errata 94 refers to the 94th bug identified in AMD Athlon and Opteron processors. This bug affects the sequential prefetch feature in those processors. This bug affects the following processor families :

  • AMD Opteron (Socket 940)
  • AMD Athlon 64 (Socket 754, 939)
  • AMD Athlon 64 FX (Socket 940, 939)
  • Mobile AMD Athlon 64 (Socket 754)
  • AMD Sempron (Socket 754, 939)
  • Mobile AMD Sempron (Socket 754)
  • Mobile AMD Athlon XP-M (Socket 754)

This BIOS feature is a workaround for the bug. It allows you to disable the sequential prefetch mechanism and avoid the bug from manifesting.

When enabled, the BIOS will disable the processor’s sequential prefetch mechanism for any software that operates in Long Mode.

When disabled, the BIOS will not disable the processor’s sequential prefetch mechanism. This improves its performance.

When set to Auto, the BIOS will query the processor to see if it is affected by the bug. If the processor is affected, the BIOS will enable this BIOS feature. Otherwise, it will leave it disabled.

If your processor is affected by this bug, you should enable this BIOS feature to prevent the processor from hanging or processing incorrect code. But if your processor is not affected by this bug, disable this BIOS feature for maximum performance.

 

Details

As processors get more and more complex, every new processor design inevitably comes with a plethora of bugs. Those that are identified are given errata numbers.

Errata 94 refers to the 94th bug identified in AMD Athlon and Opteron processors. This bug affects the sequential prefetch feature in those processors.

When there’s an instruction cache miss, the sequential prefetch mechanism in affected processors may incorrectly prefetch the next sequential cache line. This may cause the processor to hang. Affected 64-bit processors that run 32-bit applications may end up executing incorrect code.

This bug is present in AMD’s processor revisions of SH-B3, SH-C0, SH-CG, DH-CG and CH-CG. These revisions affect the following processor families :
