Dell EMC HCI Appliances Now Available On 14th Gen PowerEdge Servers

Dell EMC just announced the availability of Dell EMC HCI appliances on the new 14th Gen PowerEdge servers.

With the 14th Gen PowerEdge server platform, designed and optimised for Dell EMC HCI appliances, customers of all sizes can expect even more powerful and predictable performance with even greater configurability for hosting a wide-range of mission critical software applications on Dell EMC VxRail and XC Series appliances.

 

Dell EMC HCI Appliances Now Available On 14th Gen PowerEdge Servers

Dell EMC now combines the simplicity, agility and scalability of the industry-leading Dell EMC HCI portfolio with the power and flexibility of next generation servers, designed and optimised for HCI. This offers greater performance and reliability to meet customer demands as HCI moves into core data centers and is relied on to run a wider range of applications and workloads.

The 14th Gen Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, based on Intel Xeon Processor Scalable Family, include 150 custom requirements for software-defined storage (SDS) built-in, making it uniquely optimised for HCI.

This includes improved support for SSDs in scale-out deployments; faster initialisation and streamlined data storage management; increased drive cooling for improved reliability; and, optional, common user interfaces across server and HCI platforms for Dell EMC systems management capabilities.

The upgraded Dell EMC HCI appliance portfolio offers customers significantly faster access to applications and data thanks to higher core counts, faster clock frequency, more memory channels, and faster memory resulting in up to 1.7X more processing power and up to 62% higher internal bandwidth.

Dell EMC HCI appliances include the Dell EMC VxRail Appliance family, powered by VMware vSAN and jointly engineered with VMware, and the Dell EMC XC Series, designed for customers seeking choice of hypervisors, including Microsoft Hyper-V, or multi-hypervisor environments.

These HCI appliances help simplify the entire lifecycle with advanced automation – with unique software that simplifies deployment, management, scaling, support and maintenance – making it easier for customers from day one.

 

Dell EMC VxRail Appliances on 14th Gen PowerEdge Servers

Dell EMC VxRail Appliances on 14th Gen PowerEdge servers offer more powerful and predictable performance across millions of flexible configuration options to meet any HCI use case and more demanding, mission-critical workloads in VMware environments.

VxRail Appliance customers can expect:

  • Better performance for the most demanding applications with up to 2X more IOPS (input/output operations per second), and more than 2x faster response times
  • Highly dependable performance with 9x more predictable response times sustained at sub-one millisecond
  • More options for perfectly right-sized deployments with millions more configurations including more processor options, new SATA SSDs, additional network connectivity options, and more GPU expansion to precisely match customers’ HCI requirements without over provisioning

Dell EMC XC Series Appliances on 14th Gen PowerEdge Servers

Dell EMC XC Series on 14th Gen PowerEdge servers enables higher performance for workloads, faster networking speeds and new NVMe/SSD configurations.

More specifically, with the new Dell EMC XC Series appliances, customers can expect:

  • Increased performance for compute intensive workloads with up to 50% additional cores per appliance
  • Up to 93% increased compute capability for workloads with storage density as a primary need
  • Expanded use cases in VDI environments for sophisticated compute needs with up to 50% more GPU power

 

Dell EMC HCI Appliances Availability

  • Dell EMC VxRail Appliances on Dell EMC PowerEdge 14th generation servers are orderable today and will be generally available starting December 12, 2017.
  • Dell EMC XC Series models XC640, XC740xd and XC740 on Dell EMC PowerEdge 14th generation servers are generally available today.

14th Generation PowerEdge Servers @ Dell EMC Forum 2017

Dell EMC just announced the worldwide availability of the 14th Generation PowerEdge servers, as well as Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) advancements, at the Dell EMC Forum 2017 here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Dell EMC Business Update For 2H 2017

The media briefing kicked off with a business update on Dell EMC by KT Ong, Country Manager of Dell EMC Malaysia. He also briefed us on the maturity of the industry’s digital transformation process.

Some key points from his presentation :

  • Dell EMC is the market leader in Converged Infrastructure.
  • They recorded 17 consecutive quarters of gain in the PC market.
  • Their PowerEdge server business continues to deliver double-digit growth.
  • Their Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) business is growing in triple digits, and they expected to be the market leader by the next quarter.
  • Only 5% of organisations that responded to the Dell EMC survey had fully completed their digital transformation, with 12% of organisations still stuck with legacy IT.
  • Transformed organisations are more than twice as likely to report exceeding their FY2016 revenue goals than those still stuck with legacy IT.

 

The 14th Generation PowerEdge Servers

The bedrock of the modern data center, and Dell EMC’s infrastructure solution strategy is their PowerEdge servers. In this video, William Tan, Director of Compute & Marketing, Dell EMC Malaysia, details their server strategy and how the new 14th Generation PowerEdge servers fit into it all.

The new 14th Generation PowerEdge servers are now optimised for NVMe storage, software-defined storage and hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI), promising :

  • Accelerated database performance and lower latency – up to 12X more database IOPS, and up to 98% less database latency in a VMware vSAN cluster
  • Faster and seamless live migration of virtual machines – up to 58% faster migrations, with up to 75% less CPU usage when using 25 GbE with Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA).
  • Faster storage performance – with up to 6X more NVMe drives, and up to 5X more flash storage, 30% more I/O slots and 25% increase in density.

The 14th Generation PowerEdge Line-Up

The 14th Generation PowerEdge servers are powered by the new Intel Xeon Scalable processors. With 27% more CPU cores and 50% more memory bandwidth, they will offer more compute performance than ever before. Here is the current line-up as announced at the Dell EMC Forum 2017 :

  • Dell EMC PowerEdge R640 – ideal for dense scale-out datacenter computing and storage in a 1U / 2-socket platform.
  • Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 – workhorse 2U / 2-socket  platform with 50% more VDI users per server, and up to 50% more GPU accelerator support for Hadoop analytics.
  • Dell EMC PowerEdge R740XD – this 2U / 2S platform has best-in-class storage performance and density for software-defined storage.
  • Dell EMC PowerEdge R940 – this 3U / 4S platform handles extremely demanding, mission-critical workloads like ERP, e-commerce and very large databases. The PowerEdge R940 can save up to US$600,000 in Oracle licensing fees, and performs up to 44% faster in an SAP SD Sybase Environment.
  • Dell EMC PowerEdge M640 & FC640 – these are modular servers with best-in-class storage density in a blade / modular platform.
  • Dell EMC PowerEdge C6420 – ideal for high-performance computing, with maximum density, scalability and energy-efficiency in a 2U / 8S modular platforms.

The First AMD Naples + Radeon Instinct Reference Design Revealed!

We had earlier revealed the upcoming AMD Ryzen desktop processor, and the AMD Radeon Instinct compute accelerators. But that was not all they revealed at the AMD Tech Summit held in Sonoma last month. AMD also showcased the world’s first AMD Naples and Radeon Instinct reference design!

This is a compact 2U (19″) server with two AMD Naples processors, and two Radeon Instinct accelerators. Check it out!

 

What Is AMD Naples?

Formerly known as Summit Ridge, the AMD Ryzen is an octa-core desktop processor that promises to match, if not beat, the Intel Core i7-6900K in both performance and power consumption. Like Ryzen, the AMD Naples processor is based on the AMD Zen microarchitecture. But instead of having just 8 cores, AMD Naples is a server-class processor that boasts 32 cores!

Like Intel Xeon processors, the AMD Naples processor can process two threads per core. So the 32-core AMD Naples processor can handle up to 64 threads simultaneously. It will also reportedly feature a massive 512 MB L3 cache.

Compared that to the top-of-the-line Intel Xeon E7-8890 v4 processor that only has 24 cores and handles up to 48 threads simultaneously, and only has a 60 MB L3 cache.

If the AMD Naples processor delivers the same performance and power consumption we saw with AMD Ryzen, then it should deliver at least 33% better compute performance than the Intel Xeon E7-8890 v4 processor, and blow it out of the water in memory performance. Now that will be a killer server CPU.

Compute Boost With Radeon Instinct

If the potentially superior AMD Naples compute performance does not impress you, the reference design also showcased the new AMD Radeon Instinct accelerators. Their 2U server reference design featured what appears to be two AMD Radeon Instinct MI8 SFF accelerators.

The Radeon Instinct MI8 is a passively-cooled accelerator that requires only 175 W of power. Each MI8 accelerator delivers 8.2 TFLOPS of FP16 compute performance with 512 GB/s of memory bandwidth. So two of them will offer over 16 TFLOPs of FP16 compute performance in this 2U server.
