Penang Grand Challenge 2018 Details

Theme : Outdoor Billboard Monitoring System

Location : @CAT Penang, Level 3, Wisma Yeap Chor Ee, 16, Gat Lebuh China, Georgetown, 10300 Penang

Date : 29th June to 1st July 2018

Problem Statement : Outdoor billboards are one of the biggest advertisement platforms in Malaysia. Unfortunately, the tracking and monitoring process for the advertisements are really time consuming and hard with traditional method.

Outdoor billboard owners should get permit from city councils to own such billboards. They have to pay permit fee for each time they change advertisements on the billboards too.

For an example, let’s say ABC company owns a billboard in Georgetown. They place an advertisement for Pepsi for 3 months. They need to approach the city council and get permit for the advertisement and specify the duration of advertisement will be displayed. Assuming after the 3 months, they change to Colgate advertisement, they need to approach the city council again to obtain for new permit. The challenge here is, the billboard owners do not approach the city council to get new permits.

This is causing loss in revenue for city councils. Besides city councils can’t review the content of these advertisements to make sure they can be displayed in public places.

Specifications : Proposed idea must utilize Internet of Things (IoT) based solution.

  • Track the location of the billboards
  • Track the duration of the advertisements
  • Create alerts in case of advertisement changes and due dates
  • Create reports for City councils
  • Alert on defaulters

Justification : Creating IoT based solutions for Outdoor billboards will monitor the content of the advertisement to make sure they are appropriate for public display.

Such monitoring system will force the billboard owners to apply for appropriate permits which will generate income for city councils.

Potential Stakeholders : City councils
