Malaysia Approves Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine For Children!
On 29 October 2021, the US FDA officially authorised the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in 5-11 year-old children.
The Minister of Health Khairy Jamaluddin immediately said that Malaysia will proceed to procure the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children.
On 6 January 2021, the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM) announced that the Drug Control Authority (DCA) has agreed to conditionally approve these two Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine formulations for children :
- COMIRNATY 10mcg Concentrate for Dispersion for Injection
This is COMIRNATY vaccine for children 5 to 11 years in age. This formulation has a lower dosage, compared to the COMIRNATY vaccine given to individuals 12 years and older. - COMIRNATY (Tris/Sucrose) 30mcg Solution for Injection
This is the COMIRNATY vaccine with a new formulation that does not require dilution before administration, and has a longer lifespan of 10 weeks (compared to the current formulation at 1 month), when storage at between 2 ºC and 8 ºC after defrosting.
This formulation is for the COVID-19 immunisation of individuals who are 12 years and older.
Note : Tris / Tromethamine is used in both new formulations, for longer storage at normal fridge temperatures. The second formulation is used for adults, as well as children 12 years and older.
