Malaysia’s Vaccine Programme For Kids : A Quick Primer!
The COVID-19 vaccination programme for kids 5-11 years in age will kick off on 3 February 2022 in the Klang Valley at:
- Hospitals for those with medical conditions,
- COVID-19 vaccination centres (PPV) for those without medical conditions
Parents in the Klang Valley will be able to book their child’s vaccination appointments through MySejahtera, with the option to select the most convenient place and time. This feature will be expanded to other states shortly.
Currently, only a special Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for kids 5 to 11 years in age.
This is a special paediatric dose that is smaller at only 0.2 ml, and contains only 10 micrograms (mcg) of the vaccine – 1/3 of the dose used in adults.
To avoid confusion, the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for kids comes with an orange cap, and boxes and labels with orange borders.

This paediatric Pfizer vaccine was shown to be 90.7% efficacious in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 infection, with fewer side effects.
More than 8.7 million doses of the paediatric vaccine have been administered in the United States, with the number of AEFI incidents far lower than that of teenagers 12-17 years old who were vaccinated with the full adult dose.
