Malaysia Approves Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine!

The Malaysia Ministry of Health had earlier stated that a priority review of any COVID-19 vaccine would take 90-120 working days, which would translate to 4-6 months.

They also said that Pfizer only submitted their vaccine dossier to the Malaysia National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Division (NPRA) on 15 December 2020.

This would have meant a priority review of the Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine would normally be completed by end of April 2021.

However, it looks like the NPRA worked double-time to approve the registration of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in less than a month.

On 11 January 2021, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced the imposition of MCO / CMCO / RMCO across Malaysia.

In the same speech, he also announced that the NPRA approved the registration of the Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine.

This accelerated approval would now allow the Malaysia Ministry of Health to prepare for the distribution and administration of the Pfizer vaccine as soon as the first batch arrives at the end of February 2021.

He also made several other announcements :

  • Malaysia will receive the first supply of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines at the end of February 2021
  • the Ministry of Health has developed the National COVID-19 Immunisation Program Plan to ensure proper distribution of the vaccine
  • the government signed a preliminary agreement with the COVAX Facility, Pfizer and AstraZeneca for their COVID-19 vaccines
  • the government is in the process of final negotiations with Sinovac, CanSino and Gamaleya for their vaccines.

The Pfizer-BioNTech BNT162b2 vaccine (also known as Tozinameran or Comirnaty) has the NPRA registration number of MAL21016022AZ.
