Is Australia opportunistically vaccinating people under sedation?!

Take a look at the viral claims, and find out what the facts really are!

Claim : Australia Is Opportunistically Vaccinating People Under Sedation!

People are sharing an ATAGI advisory, while claiming or suggesting that Australia is opportunistically vaccinating people under sedation!

Died Suddenly : Australian Government puts out a chilling notice advising health officials to “opportunistically” administer vaccines to patients who are under sedation or anesthesia. This is horrifying.

Truth : Australia Requires Consent For Vaccinating People Under Sedation!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS created or propagated by anti-vaccine proponents, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : ATAGI Sedation Advice Is From April 2022

Let me start by pointing out that the ATAGI (Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation) advice on the use of sedation for COVID-19 vaccination is not new.

It was actually published on 6 April 2022, as stated in the PDF document, which has not been changed since.

Therefore, it is curious to see so many people posting the ATAGI advice as if it’s new. It’s more than 20 months old!

Fact #2 : Some People Require Sedation For Anxiety

If you read the ATAGI document (PDF), you will see that it was mainly about how healthcare professionals can safely administer the COVID-19 vaccine to people with:

  • anxiety disorders,
  • needle-phobia, or
  • behavioural disorders

For such people, it may be safer to place them under sedation to allow the safe administration of the COVID-19 vaccine. Even so, ATAGI recommends using other techniques before resorting to sedation:

  • a low-sensory stimulation environment,
  • presence of comforting person or object,
  • distraction with music, video, or toys,
  • relaxation techniques, and
  • cognitive behaviour therapy.

In short – the ATAGI is recommending sedation only as a last resort.

Fact #3 : Informed Consent Is Always Required

When ATAGI said that vaccines “may also be administered opportunistically while patients are undergoing sedation for unrelated procedures“, it does not mean without their consent.

The ATAGI advice clearly states that whether sedation is used or not, informed consent must be obtained from the patient (or legal guardian), before each dose can be administered.

Informed consent must be obtained prior to each dose from the patient themselves, or, where the patient
does not have capacity to give consent, from the parent, guardian or substitute decision-maker.

Fact #4 : Sedation Not Used To Force Vaccination

Claims or suggestions that Australia is opportunistically vaccinating people while they are sedated based on the ATAGI advice is easily proven false.

For one thing – they do not actually offer any evidence that the Australian government is asking healthcare professionals to vaccinate people against COVID-19, without consent, and under sedation.

More importantly, the ATAGI advice clearly states that sedation should not be used to force people to get vaccinated against COVID-19:

Sedation should not be used as a measure to enforce compliance with vaccination requirements.

Fact #5 : Opportunistic Vaccination Only During Elective Procedures

What ATAGI mean when it said that vaccines “may also be administered opportunistically while patients are undergoing sedation for unrelated procedures” was that healthcare professionals can offer patients who are undergoing elective procedures the option of getting vaccinated against COVID-19 while under sedation.

The ATAGI strongly encourages this option as it can help avoid the need for a separate episode of sedation. In other words – a patient who suffers from anxiety can opt to get vaccinated against COVID-19 while being sedated for a mole removal, instead of undergoing a separate sedation for the vaccine.

However, this option does not apply to everyone undergoing some kind of medical procedure. The ATAGI advice clearly states that “opportunistic vaccination should only be considered for elective procedures where the patient is not acutely unwell“.

Fact #6 : Sedation Does Not Mean Loss Of Consciousness

The ATAGI also pointed out that placing people under sedation does not mean that they actually lose consciousness. It depends on the type and level of sedation used:

  • anxiolysis involves administering a medication to reduce anxiety alone, where the patient is still able to respond verbally
  • conscious sedation involves depression of consciousness, during which patients can still respond purposely to verbal commands or tactile stimulation and do not require any breathing support
  • deeper sedation involves loss of consciousness, during which patients require breathing support

As you can surmise, placing people under deep sedation requires considerable resources, and is impractical to conduct mass vaccinations, even if a nefarious government wants to forcibly vaccinate its population.
