Truth : Netanyahu Did Not Announce $5 Billion Gaza Settlement Plan!

This appears to be yet another example of fake news circulating online, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : Netanyahu Did Not Announce $5 Billion Gaza Settlement Plan!

Let me start by pointing out that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not announce any $5 billion plan to build new settlements in the Gaza Strip.

On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Netanyahu announced a five-year, 19-billion-shekel ($5 billion) plan to rebuild and strengthen communities near the Gaza border after the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas militants.

The Tekuma Plan, as it’s called, does not involve the Gaza Strip. The money would only go towards towns in the Western Negev, bordering the Gaza Strip.

Fact #2 : Video Was Incorrectly Translated

The viral video had user-added subtitles, that appear to be incorrectly (perhaps intentionally?) translated.

The correct translation is available through the official transcript on the official Israeli government website (archive):

I have just come from meeting with the British and German foreign ministers. Last night, I spoke with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and soon I will speak with additional leaders.

I thank our friends for their support in defense of Israel and I say this – support in both words and deeds. They also have all kinds of suggestions and advice, which I appreciate; however, I would also like to clarify – we will make our decisions ourselves. The State of Israel will do whatever is necessary to defend itself.

Today, the Government will approve the Tekuma Plan to rebuild the communities in the Western Negev. We will invest the very large sum of NIS 19 billion in order to move the communities of the Western Negev forward for generations. We will invest in housing, infrastructure, education, employment, health and more.

The Hamas terrorists sought to uproot us. We will uproot them and deepen our roots. We will build the Land of Israel and safeguard our state.

As you can see, Benjamin Netanyahu never mentioned the Gaza Strip, when he announced the Tekuma Plan. He only referred to the “communities in the Western Negev”, which covers the border towns near the Gaza Strip, but not the Gaza Strip itself.

Fact #3 : Israel Is Building New Settlements In East Jerusalem

While Israel has not made any plans to build new settlements in the Gaza Strip, The Guardian just reported that the Israeli government has accelerated the construction of new settlements in East Jerusalem:

Israel’s government has accelerated the construction of settlements across East Jerusalem, with more than 20 projects totalling thousands of housing units having been approved or advanced since the start of the war in Gaza six months ago, planning documents show.

Ministries and offices within the Israeli government are behind all the largest and most contentious of the projects, sometimes in association with rightwing nationalist groups with a history of trying to evict Palestinians from their homes in parts of the city.

The rapid approval or construction of settlements that are illegal under international law is likely to further damage Israel’s relationship with the Biden administration.

Instead of pushing false narratives about the Takuma Plan, perhaps it would be more fruitful for Palestinian supporters to question and criticise Israel’s building of new settlements in East Jerusalem.
