Samsung Galaxy S20 Bright Night Mode : How Useful Is It?

Samsung Galaxy S20 Bright Night Mode : How Useful Is It?

The new Samsung Galaxy S20 introduces a brand new Bright Night mode, which promises to deliver superior picture quality in very low light conditions!

Let’s take a look at the new Bright Night technology that Samsung just introduced in their Galaxy S20 family of smartphones!

Galaxy S20 Bright Night Mode : What Is It?

The Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphones come with a new Night mode called Bright Night.

Bright Night uses a technique called multi-frame processing to deliver unprecedented picture quality even in low or dim lighting.

When you take a photo using the Bright Night mode, it takes 30 photos rapid succession, and instantly combines using multi-frame processing into one clear photo.

Galaxy S20 Bright Night Mode : How To Use It?

Here is a short guide on how to use the Bright Night mode on your Galaxy S20 smartphone :

  1. Open the Camera app in your Galaxy S20 smartphone
  2. Swipe to the left, and tap More.
  3. Tap NIGHT, to enable the Bright Night mode.
  4. Tap the Zoom icons if you want to get a closer shot.
  5. Tap the Capture button when you are ready to take a photo!

Galaxy S20 Bright Night Mode : How Effective Is It?

First, let’s compare the Galaxy S20 Ultra with Bright Night mode enabled, and disabled.

We set up this scene, placing a dim and indirect light source at a distance, intentionally placing it at the back so that it casts a shadow towards the front.

Without Bright Night mode enabled, you cannot make out the Minion prisoner’s hands and feet, or the details of Darth Minion’s armour.

But when we took the same scene with Bright Night mode turned on, the brightness and clarity of the scene is greatly boosted!

You can now see the Minion prisoner’s hand and feet, and the intricate details of Darth Minion’s armour, even though both are in the shadows!

In fact, even though we intentionally framed the scene with the light at the back, you can clearly see the details of all three Minions and the teddy bear.

Bright Night Mode Comparison : Galaxy S20 vs Galaxy S10

The Samsung Galaxy S10 received a Bright Night mode upgrade, giving it the same multi-frame processing capability to deliver truly excellent photos in low-light conditions.

Let’s see how the Galaxy S10’s Bright Night mode stacks up against the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s improved Bright Night mode!

The Samsung Galaxy S10’s Night mode is impressive, offering a much brighter and clearer picture than the Galaxy S20 without Night mode.

But once you turn on Bright Night mode for the Galaxy S20 Ultra, there is no doubt that it does even better than the already impressive Galaxy S10!

Samsung Galaxy S20 Camera Technologies : What’s New?

The new Samsung Galaxy S20 introduces a brand new camera system, with new high-resolution sensors and a new Space Zoom technology.

Let’s take a look at the new camera technologies that Samsung just introduced in their Galaxy S20 family of smartphones!

Samsung Galaxy S20 Super Resolution : 108MP / 64MP

The Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphones come with new super resolution sensors :

These super high resolution sensors allow you to zoom in, and crop a section you want, without losing any detail in that picture!

Samsung did not just increase the number of pixels on their sensors, they also greatly increased the sensor size. This increases the amount of light each pixel receives, so that they will deliver better image quality, even in low-light conditions.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Camera : 108MP Sensor Modes

The 108MP sensor in the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra can switch between two modes – Nona-Binning and Re-Mosaic.

Nona-Binning for better low-light performance

Also known as 3×3 binning, nona-binning merges nine pixels into one.

This gives you a 12 MP picture instead of a 108 MP picture, but each pixel will receive 9X more light for much better clarity in low-light conditions!

Re-Mosaic for more detailed images

This is the default mode when there is good lighting.

The Re-Mosaic algorithm remaps the pixels into a conventional RGB pattern to produce more details in the image.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Camera : Space Zoom Technology

The Samsung Space Zoom Technology combines their new Hybrid Optic Zoom, with AI multi-frame processing enhancements to give you incredible zoom ranges.

  • Hybrid Optic Zoom : longer zoom range by cropping their new super resolution sensor, and pairing it with new zoom lens
  • AI Multi-Frame Processing : better image quality of digitally-zoomed images through AI algorithms

The Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ both offer 3x Hybrid Optic Zoom, with 30x Space Zoom.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra, on the other hand, offers 10x Hybrid Optic Zoom, with 100x Space Zoom!

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Camera : Folded Lens + 48MP Sensor

We should give a special mention to the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which combines a folded lens design and a 48 MP sensor to deliver 10x Hybrid Optic Zoom.

That can be extended to 100X using AI multi-frame processing, which reduces hand shaking and quality loss at such high zoom levels.

Dual-Mode 48MP Sensor

The telephoto camera on the Galaxy S20 Ultra has a 48MP sensor, which switches between tetra-binning and re-mosaic modes, depending on the shooting conditions and zoom ratio.

Its tetra-binning mode combines 4 pixels into 1 for significantly better low-light performance.

Its re-mosaic mode rearranges the RGB pixels, allowing for a sensor crop to deliver the 10x Hybrid Optic Zoom.

Folded Lens

The folded lens design allows the Galaxy S20 Ultra to deliver a wider zoom range into a very limited space. The lens lays flat, and is positioned at the bottom of the camera.

Light from the aperture is redirected by a prism into the lens, refracting at a 90-degree angle to increase the focal length.

Skull Breaker Challenge Continues To Injure Children!

The damage caused by the Skull Breaker challenge on TikTok and other social media platforms cannot be understated. Even after TikTok was forced to ban those videos, the prank continues to injure children…

It did not help that many people thought it was a hoax, or dismissed it as a childish prank. So we decided to compile this list of injuries that have been confirmed to be attributed to the Skull Breaker challenge.

Please make sure you share this list out, so that parents and schools can warn children about the dangers and consequences of the Skull Breaker challenge.

The Skull Breaker Challenge Explained!

The tripping jump challenge appears to have originated in South America as the Skull Breaker Challenge on TikTok, so you may hear it referred to as Rompcráneos or Rasteira in Spanish.

Many people pooh-poohed the initial reports of the Skull Breaker TikTok challenge, claiming that it was a hoax.  But it quickly spread across the world, as kids and even adults try to record themselves pranking others with it.

The challenge is simple in concept, but takes two to play it and an innocent victim to trick.

  1. Trick the victim into thinking that the two of you want to record a slow-motion video of all three jumping.
  2. Set up a camera to record the action, or have someone record it for you.
  3. As the victim jumps, you both kick his / her legs, so the victim falls flat while you guys laugh.
  4. Share the video on TikTok for likes!

Although at least one girl died from the challenge, it took months of public outrage before TikTok agreed to remove all such videos from their platform.

Skull Breaker TikTok Challenge Continues To Injure Children!

While TikTok may have agreed to remove Skull Breaker videos when they find them, children (well, bullies) are apparently continuing with the challenge!

Either TikTok has not been particularly diligent, or the pranksters and influencers have given the challenge a new name. But the fact still remains – children continue to be victimised and injured by this stupid challenge.

We are also greatly concerned by some people who insist that this is an Internet hoax, or a mass hysteria event; and that parents and schools should not scare children with such silly tales.

Therefore, we decided to compile this public record of the injuries caused by the Skull Breaker TikTok challenge, so that there can be no doubt that the Skull Breaker TikTok challenge is REAL, and it continues to injure children.

11 November 2019 : Emanuela Medeiros (Killed)

16-year old Emanuela died after hitting her head on the ground during the Skull Breaker challenge (known then as the rasteira challenge) at the Antônio Fagundes Municipal School in Mossoró, Brazil.

Circa January 2020 : Lilian Calabianqui (NA)

Lilian was tricked into performing the Skull Breaker challenge by her own sons, the social media influencers who call themselves Irmaos Fuinha.

They were the ones who popularised the Skull Breaker challenge on TikTok, and arguably made it go global.

In their video, it was obvious that they knew about the danger and caught their mother before she hit her head on the floor.

Unfortunately, they did not warn the millions of young fans about that – and so, it set off a chain of injuries across the globe.

Late January 2020 : Marc and Stacy Shenker’s Son (Physical Therapy)

Marc and Stacy Shenker’s 13-year old son suffered a concussion in the Skull Breaker Challenge at the Cherry Hill middle school in New Jersey.

A month after that incident, he still complains of lethargy and headaches, and is on academic restriction. He is also starting physical therapy.

4 February 2020 : Unknown Student (NA)

The video of the Skull Breaker TikTok challenge being performed on a student at the Santo Tomas de Aquino School in Caracas, Venezuela went viral.

The very next day, the Chacao municipality posted this on Instagram, warning against the challenge :

4 February 2020 : Unknown Student (NA)

A 16-year old girl was bullied by two students into performing the challenge at the South Dade Senior High School :

According to the victim, two other students at the school asked her to jump as high as she could. One of the students jumped with her to see who could jump higher while the other stood off to the side.

“They kept asking me until I said yes,” the 16-year-old freshman said.

When the victim jumped, the two students swept her legs out from under her, causing her to fall backwards and hurt her neck and head.

“I jumped really high and I remember them kicking me off my feet and I fell on my head,” she said.

The two perpetrators including the student filming the challenge were disciplined, but the victim had to transfer to another school, and is currently being treated for her injuries.

5 February 2020 : Justin Hodson (Hospitalised)

Justin was tricked into the Skull Breaker TikTok challenge, and hit his back and head. He lost consciousness trying to get up, and fell forward, injuring his face as well.

He was hospitalised with a head injury, stitches to his face, severe cuts inside his mouth and two front teeth injured.

Early February 2020 : Olivia Ross

In Portland, Oregon, Olivia Ross was tricked into performing the Skull Breaker challenge by two upperclassmen seniors at the Mountainside High School. She blacked out and had a headache after hitting her head :

“These seniors asked me if I would jump for their TikTok video. I remember like blacking out for a second and I started to get like an instant pressure headache,” Ross said.

You can clearly see from the screenshot below, that the two school seniors then posted the video on TikTok.

Olivia’s mother, Lindsay Zobrist, pointed out that anyone who types “Skull Breaking Challenge” or “Jumping Prank” or “Jump Trip” into TikTok will see hundreds of such videos.

11 February 2020 : Parker Smith (Broken Arm)

12-year old Parker Smith from Alabama broke both the radius and ulna bones of his right arm, after being tricked into participating in the Skull Breaker Challenge.

14 February 2020 : Aubrey Ortiz (Hospitalised)

12-year old Aubrey Ortiz from the South Brook Middle School was tricked by a boy and a girl at her school, who asked her to “learn a dance”.

“They kicked my legs over, and (one girl) grabbed my legs and slammed them to the ground,” Ortiz said. “I went numb and couldn’t do anything. I struggled getting up.”

23 February 2020 : Kathleen DeJesus (Hospitalised)

13-year old Kathleen DeJesus was targeted at the Lawrence Massachusetts Middle School, and spent two days in the hospital for a severe concussion :

“I was screaming that I needed an ambulance,” said Kathleen. “I was thinking like ‘Oh my God I’m going to lose my life over this game.’ I should have never done it.”

25 February 2020 : Ke’Avion Hearn (Hospitalised)

Ke’Avion Hearn – a brain cancer survivor – was tricked into performing the challenge, and knocked unconscious by his classmates at the Southeast Arkansas Preparatory High School :

“They said all you go to do is jump,” Ke’Avion recalled. He says he never knew what those classmates were about to do to him.

“I jumped, they kind of kicked me out under my legs so I can’t land,” he said. “All I remember is being on the floor.”

His mother, Kimberly Hearn said, “He doesn’t deserve that, no child deserves that. You made him fall on his head. That’s got to be so cruel, and you found it to be so funny.”

Hearn pointed out that getting hit on the head was even more dangerous for Ke’Avion, who underwent multiple surgeries and chemotherapy a few years ago for a large brain tumour.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Cameras : 48MP vs Ultra Wide vs Macro

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is one of the best mid-range smartphones you can buy today, and one of the main reason (in addition to its 32 MP selfie camera) is its combination of 48 MP, Ultra Wide and macro cameras.

In this comparison, we will take a look at the Galaxy A51 cameras, and show you real-life samples of what it is really capable of!

Samsung Galaxy A51 Cameras : A Quick Primer

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is one of the few mid-range smartphones to offer a quad-camera system.

  • 48 MP main camera, with f/2.0 aperture
  • 12 MP ultra wide camera, with f/2.2 aperture
  • 5 MP macro camera, with f/2.4 aperture
  • 5 MP depth sensor, with f/2.2 aperture

Now, the depth sensor does not take photos and is used exclusively to detect distance for Live Focus capability, letting you focus on the subject and adjust the amount of bokeh in the background.

But what’s really important is how this mix of cameras offers the user great flexibility. How? Let us show you…

Samsung Galaxy A51 Cameras : 48MP vs Ultra Wide

The 48 MP main camera is impressive, no doubt. It is the camera of choice, if you need the highest-resolution images possible, or if you want to take low-light photos.

The 12 MP Ultra Wide camera may not have its resolution, but it gives you a wider field of vision, which is very useful for shots of sceneries and architecture.

The ultra wide angle also allows you to create more dramatic photos of the same scene. Check out the difference between the two cameras for the scenes above and below.

Can you see how the ultra wide camera conveys a more dramatic feel to even ordinary scenes? This is why we LOVE the ultra wide camera so much!

Samsung Galaxy A51 Cameras : Go Near With Macro!

You may be tempted to ignore its macro camera, because it “only” has a 5 MP sensor.

But every macro picture the Galaxy A51 takes has a resolution of 2576 x 1932 pixels. That’s far more pixels than what most of us can see on our smartphone or laptop display!

More importantly, it lets you get REALLY CLOSE to the subject, while ensuring that they stay sharp and in focus. This is critical when the subject is small – like insects, tiny flowers, or these cockles.

And look at how much more interesting a humble cockle appears in a macro shot!

The depth of field is also important as these cumin seeds demonstrate.

The main camera may have a higher resolution, but it cannot focus on the seeds in the foreground and it has a narrow depth-of-field – only seeds in a small range will be in focus.

The macro camera not only lets you get really close for a really detailed look at each seed, it has great depth of field, so the seeds are all in focus from top to the bottom.

In addition to allowing for a close-up focus of the subject, the macro camera also has more accurate colour reproduction when the subject is very close to the camera.

The main camera does a great job of reproducing colour at normal photographic ranges, but when you get really close to the subject, the macro camera will offer more accurate colour reproduction.

We are not saying the main camera isn’t good – it’s excellent! The macro camera just lets you capture sharper, more detailed images with better colour reproduction when you need to take a close-up shot of the subject.

One trick, if you prefer the main camera, is to take the photos from a distance and crop the photo on the phone or computer.

Because of its ultra high resolution, you can zoom into its 48 million pixels and crop out what you want – the final picture will remain sharp and in focus!

But we still recommend you try using the macro camera for close-up shots. You will be pleasantly surprised by how useful it is!

Samsung Galaxy A51 Price + Availability

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is available in three colour options – Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Blue.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a recommended retail price of RM 1,299, while the Galaxy A71 with a 64 MP main camera is priced at just RM 1,799!

Here are some online purchase options for both the Galaxy A51 and the Galaxy A71 smartphones in Malaysia :

TikTok Finally Bans Deadly Skull Breaker Challenge!

TikTok finally addressed the deadly Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge controversy, by banning those videos!

Find out what the Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge is all about, and why TikTok finally banned those videos!

Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge Explained!

The tripping jump challenge appears to have originated in South America as the Skullbreaker Challenge on TikTok, so you may hear it referred to as Rompcráneos or Rasteira in Spanish.

It quickly spread across the world, as kids and even adults try to record themselves pranking others with it on TikTok!

  2. Set up a camera to record the action, or have someone record it for you.
  3. As the victim jumps, you both kick his / her legs, so the victim falls flat while you guys laugh.
  4. Share the video on TikTok for likes!

Funny, right? Yeah, if you are an asshole… because this challenge is known as the Skull Breaker Challenge for a reason!

Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge Danger!

Take a look at this video which showcases five different tripping jump / skull breaker challenge videos. Watch how ALL five victims hit the back of their heads, and at least two of them are knocked unconscious!

The Austin ISD Police Department opened an investigation into one case involving a student at the Austin Independent School District, who sustained head injuries after being tricked into the skull breaker challenge at the school library.

In Florida, parents of a victim pressed charges against two Seabreeze High School students who performed the skull breaker challenge on their daughter (who was said to be a special needs student).

Valerie Hodson of Arizona shared that her son was knocked unconscious with a head injury after two boys performed the tripping jump challenge on him.

Some perpetrators are even bullying students into becoming their victims, as a tripping jump challenge incident at the South Dade Senior High School on 4 February 2020 demonstrated :

“They kept asking me until I said yes,” the 16-year-old freshman said.

When the victim jumped, the two students swept her legs out from under her, causing her to fall backwards and hurt her neck and head.

This challenge has even claimed at least one life – a 16-year old Emanuela Medeiros who hit her head on the floor, and died.

Unfortunately, her death did not stop Brazilian social media influencers, Irmãos Fuinha, from trying to popularise this stupid challenge.

They only apologised for doing this after they were severely criticised by Brazilian celebrities and medical professionals!

TikTok Bans Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge!

Yesterday, TikTok issued this official statement on the Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker challenge :

The safety and well-being of our users is a top priority at TikTok.

As made clear in our Community Guidelines, we do not allow content that encourages, promotes, or glorifies dangerous challenges that might lead to injury, and this includes the skull breaker challenge.

Our content moderation team are on the lookout and we will remove any such content promptly.

It took them long enough to act. Sadly, a girl had to die, and a number of kids (and even adults) were injured.

PS. If you are worried about the Fuinha (@fuinha) brothers, don’t worry – TikTok will never take down a popular channel. All is forgiven, because they have a new Level Up Challenge for all of their young fans on TikTok!

To be fair, at least TikTok has finally banned the videos (if not the “influencers” who popularised them)… Facebook appears to have left the videos up, albeit with a warning cover over them.

Look! TikTok Has New Celebrities!

To help us forget about such sad matters, they also announced that 18 celebrities have joined TikTok… including Will Smith (@willsmith), The Rock (@therock), Steve Harvey (@steveharvey), and BTS (@bts_official_bighit).

Hurrah! LOOK at all that star power! All’s well now. Nothing to see here. Move along, everyone… Move on, move on…

Come on… there’s also Park Bom (@officialparkbom), MAMAMOO (@mamamoo_official), and yes, Terry Crews (@terrycrews)!

Are you NOT entertained???

Over The Horizon 2020 : An Acoustic Remix!

Over The Horizon is an iconic theme sound for Samsung Galaxy devices, and Samsung just unveiled their 2020 acoustic remix with a video to boot!

Take a moment to relax with their new soothing, back-to-nature Over The Horizon 2020 music video…

Over The Horizon 2020 : An Acoustic Remix!

As Samsung gets ready to unpack the Galaxy S20 smartphones, they took a moment to chill out with the new Over The Horizon 2020 – a soothing acoustic remix of their signature theme sound!

To complement the back-to-nature vibe of this acoustic remix, Samsung produce this special video showcasing the natural world in all its glory, to remind us to take a moment every now and then to stop and smell the roses.

With each new generation of Galaxy devices comes a fresh new take on the “Over the Horizon” theme, and at the core of this year’s version is the power of nature itself. In order to capture the harmonious working of the natural world in all its glory, Samsung placed monochords in various natural locations in order to harness the power of nature for music.

Powered by the natural force of running water, the monochords operate thanks to a rotor- and pulley-based mechanism. As the mechanism rotates, it triggers the monochords to pluck their respective strings in the correct order. The resulting musical refrain has the unique characteristic of having been played solely by the force of nature.

On top of the monochord melody, Samsung also emphasized sounds like running water and chirping birds and kept the use of electronic elements to a minimum in order to help maximize the listener’s connection with the relaxing sounds of nature.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III : Key Features Explained!

Canon just launched the EOS-1D X Mark III – especially designed for photography professionals.

Let’s find out from Canon what’s new in the EOS-1D X Mark III, and if this is the DSLR camera for you!

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III : Key Features Explained!

Let’s start with a presentation by Jack Kik, the Senior Product Specialist from Canon Malaysia, on the key features of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III.

Here is a quick TLDR summary of its key features :

  • A new 20.1 megapixel 35 mm full frame CMOS sensor
  • Continuous shooting speeds of up to 16 fps (viewfinder shooting), and up to 20 fps (Live View) with AF/AE tracking
  • DIGIC X image processor with CFexpress media (dual slots), which allows a burst rate of approximately 1000 shots (RAW + JPEG)
  • New AF sensor combined with AI Servo AF IV delivers significant improvement in AF speed and tracking performance
  • 4K UHD and 4K DCI movie recording at 60p/50p, and supports Canon Log 4:2:2 10-bit in-camera recording
  • In-camera recording of 5.5K RAW movies with simultaneous MP4 files
  • Built-in Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi with FTP. Supports 5 GHz wireless LAN and compatible with 2×2 MIMO when used with WFT-E9

Improved Autofocus Performance

Its new 20.1 megapixel sensor adopts a square pixel design, with a 28X increase in pixel density for both vertical and horizontal directions.

This increases its available AF points in the optical viewfinder to 191 points, from just 61 points in the EOS-1D X Mark II. Its AF points support exposure of up to f/8 with 65 cross-type AF points, allowing for better AF accuracy.

Greatly Improved Performance

Its new DIGIC X processor is 3X faster than the Mark II’s dual DIGIC 6+ processors in image processing, and up to 380X faster in general computing performance, delivering much faster subject recognition and tracking performance.

Better Noise Reduction

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II reduces noise in both the CMOS sensor, as well as DIGIG X image processing, increasing the upper limit of normal ISO speed by one stop to 102,400.

Its image quality in the ISO 6400-12800 range, frequently used by sports and news photographers, has also been improved with better noise control.

Higher Image Quality

Its new 16-point low-pass filter reduces moiré and colour distortion, as well as image resolution. This low-pass filter also incorporates Gaussian filter features to better work with high-resolution lenses.

The EOS-1D X Mark III now supports HDR OQ HEIF – a 10-bit recording standard that uses a high-resolution and low-noise approach, to reproduce an image that is sharper and much closer to reality.

Faster Burst Shots

Burst shooting speed has been increased to 16 frames per second. This may cause a blackout of the viewfinder, interrupting your tracking of the subject.

To avoid that, the EOS-1D X Mark III has a new mirror system with a high-speed mechanism to retract and reset the mirror, combined with an optical system that displays images in real time.

For Live View shooting, it can perform burst shots at up to 20 frames per second for both RAW and RAW+JPEG recording.

4K Recording Without Cropping

The EOS-1D X Mark III is the first Canon full-frame camera to support 4K video recording, without cropping. In addition to the 4K UHD 16:9 standard by ITU, it also supports the 4K DCI 17:9 standard by Digital Camera Initiative.

It supports Canon Log YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit video output and ITU-R BT.2020 colour gamut. For wider colour gradation, vivid colour range and smaller file size, it encodes video using H.265 HEVC encoding.

Dual CFexpress Card Slots

The EOS-1D X Mark III comes with dual CFexpress card slots. The ultra fast transfer rate of CFexpress media, coupled with its extended buffer memory, lets the Mark III achieve a continuous burst rate of 1,000 RAW shots.

HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Photo Showcase : Macau!

As soon as we got our hands on the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro, we took it to Macau to grab some photo samples!

Check out the unedited photo samples we took, and see for yourselves why people are saying it has the best cameras they ever used!

HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro : A Quick Primer

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) is the pinnacle of Chinese smartphone technology, boasting their latest Kirin 990 processor and arguably, the world’s most advanced quad-camera system from Leica!

Despite shipping without GMS, HUAWEI sold over 1 million units of the HUAWEI Mate30 Series smartphones in China… in just 3 hours!

A big reason why so many people loved the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) is its Leica SuperSensing Quad Camera System that consists of :

  • 40 MP Cine Camera (f/1.6 aperture)
  • 40 MP SuperSensing Wide-Angle Camera (f/1.8 aperture)
  • 8 MP Telephoto Camera with 3X optical zoom (f/2.4 aperture)
  • 3D Depth Sensing Camera

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro is particularly popular because of its 40 MP SuperSensing Cine Camera, which supports 4K 60fps video recording, with these groundbreaking features :

  • an ISO of up to 51200,
  • Cinematic Time-lapse capability,
  • real-time video bokeh effect, and
  • an ultra-slow motion mode that records at up to 7680 fps!

Historic Old Macau!

This time, we focused on the streets of peninsular Macau. This is the old, heavily-populated part of Macau where most of the Portuguese-influenced sights like Senado Square is located.

As this part of Macau is heavily-urbanised with many old buildings, it has great character wherever you go – offering great opportunities for street photography.

As usual, we took these photo samples using the Auto mode with no manual adjustments – because this is precisely how the vast majority of smartphone users take their photos!

We want our photo samples to reflect EXACTLY what any HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) user can achieve, if he/she took the same photos in the same spot, at the same time, as we did.

HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Photo Showcase : Macau!

We started the day with noodles and congee at Rua dos Mercadores. Note how congested the city looks – the buildings here are at least seven stories tall.

We resized this photo to ensure it loads quickly, but the detail in the original photo is amazing – you can zoom Into the balcony of the residential units and check out what plants they have in their mini-garden, or what clothes they hung out to dry!

This view of Rua Central emphasises the congestion in this part of Macau that cramps about 600,000 residents in just 8.5 square kilometres.

This photo shows pretty good control of the highlights and shadows. The sun was really bright, beating down mercilessly on the residences on the left, while the rest were in shadows.

The highlights were slightly overblown, but it did a good job of preserving details in the shadows. You can clearly read the small signboards further down the road.

Just off Rua Central is this unique green-coloured Theatro Dom Pedro V. (伯多祿五世劇院) | Dom Pedro V Theatre.

Built to commemorate King Pedro V of Portugal, this neo-classical building now hosts orchestral performances, opera and musical festivals.

Again, the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) opts to let the highlights blow out a little, in exchange for preserving details in the shadows. You can clearly make out the man standing next to the pillar, as well as details of the theatre’s ornate windows and doors.

On arrival at the A-Ma Temple, we find it bustling with lion and dragon dance troupes preparing for the Macau International Parade!

It was a really bright day – you can see some glare from the bright sun in the upper right quadrant. Yet, you can zoom in and clearly see the faces of each person in this picture, even though they are in the shadows.

We stepped inside the A-Ma Temple for a short respite from the crowds outside. Built in 1488 to worship the Chinese sea goddess Mazu, it is the oldest temple in Macau!

This is yet another high-contrast shot. The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) did a decent job on the harshly-lit leaves, and kept the skies blue instead of completely white.

But more importantly – you can clearly see the craggy texture of the boulder, as well as the stone stairs, even though they are in the shadows.

HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Photo Showcase : The Monte Fort!

Next, we headed off for the Monte Fort – the tallest point in Macau, and its historic military centre.

Instead of doubling back along the same route, we went down Rua da Barra for more scenic opportunities.

The 40 MP wide-angle camera is particularly useful in such shots, although it’s not quite as wide as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ (USUK | AU | SGMY).

The good news though is that your subjects in these wide-angle photos will not look distorted.

Even side roads offer great photographic opportunities, thanks to its combination of unique architecture, weathered look and old world cobble-stone pavements.

This high-contrast shot shows how well the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) controls both the brightly-lit leaves and cobblestones, yet ensuring we can clearly see the vines and moss on the old walls and the design of the louvred windows and doors.

The new world (tour vans) trying to navigate the narrow streets of old, historic Macau…

Yet another very high-contrast shot. While the harshly-lit buildings in the background lost some details, it still preserved enough that we can make out the building facade as well as the vans.

Yet you can clearly make out the crawling vines, and weathered walls of the green building on the left, as well as its window and door.

On the way, we spotted this unique structure – a doorway into the Patio do Cotovelo “inner” street with businesses lining both sides.

The detail is AMAZING! More so when you blow it up to 100% of its 40 MP resolution. You can see the brickwork in great detail, and zoom right to the shop at the end of the lane!

So here we are, at the Monte Fort (Fortaleza do Monte or 大炮台). Built between 1617 and 1626 on top of Mount Hill, it is the historic military centre of Macau.

In this almost uniformly-bright photo, the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) demonstrates its ability to capture incredible detail. Blowing up the picture allows us to see the individual leaves of the tree, as well as the details of the stone walls.

The fort covers an area of 8,000 square meters, with 32 of these muzzle-loading (state-of-the-art in those days!) cannons to protect Macau against pirates and eventually, the Dutch!

Again, this was an incredibly bright day, creating harsh shadows. Yet, you can’t tell that from this photo – the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) was able to control the highlights so that cannon, which is in direct sunlight, isn’t blown-out.

And yet, you can also see the colour of the flowers next to it, in the shadows. Also notable is the fact we can make out details of the distant building in the far background.

These days, it has become the favourite past-time of every tourist to use one of these cannons to “shoot” at the Grand Lisboa! LOL!

On this incredibly bright day, it’s noteworthy that we can zoom in and see details of the Grand Lisboa’s facade, which would be washed out in other cameras… and yes, you can make out the clouds in the bright blue sky!

This view offers the best perspective of Macau – the new and the old. The modern (and frankly, really odd-looking) Grand Lisboa in the distance, and the crumbling ruins of the old Monte Fort.

Again, the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) impressed us with its ability to preserve details in very bright conditions, even though the Grand Lisboa is miles away!

On the way back from the Monte Fort, we stumbled upon this unique home that is built over a street. I don’t even know what such a feature is called… a bridge house???

In any case, this is a great photo to zoom in, and be amazed at the amount of detail captured in a single photo.

You can examine in detail, the intricate brickwork of the overhead house. You can even zoom past the tunnel, into the shops in the distance!

As you can tell – Macau offers a lot of unique photographic opportunities, even in places you would least expect them – off the beaten path!

And the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro (MY | SG | US) has the cameras that will let you capture incredible detail in every photo. Best of all – its Auto mode works incredibly well, letting you take awesome photos without any special skill or setup!

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ : Golden Reel At Night!

We took the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ for a photography trip to Macau, where we took the opportunity to test it out at the Golden Reel at night!

Check out these Galaxy Note 10+ sample photos which will show you what you can expect from the Golden Reel at night!

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ : A Quick Primer

The Galaxy Note 10+ is the latest Samsung Note device. Think of it as an improved Galaxy S10+, with an S Pen stylus!

In addition to a flagship-class processor and a ton of memory and storage, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ (USUK | AU | SGMY) boasts a quad-camera system.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10+‘s quad-camera system consists of these cameras :

  • 12 MP Dual Aperture Camera (f/1.5 and f/2.4) : 77°, Dual Pixel, OIS
  • 16 MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera (f/2.2) : 123°, 0.5X optical zoom
  • 12 MP Telephoto Camera (f/2.4) : 45°, 2X optical zoom, OIS
  • 3D DepthVision Camera : ToF emitter and sensor with VGA (320 x 240 pixels) resolution

The 3D DepthVision camera is actually a pair of ToF (Time of Flight) emitter and sensor that provide 3D data to the main camera for features like Video Bokeh and 3D scanning. It doesn’t take any photos.

Introducing The Golden Reel!

Macau’s Golden Reel, the centrepiece attraction of Studio City, opened in October 2015. Towering 130 metres (427 feet) off the ground between the two Studio City towers, it is the highest Ferris wheel in Asia, and the world’s first to feature a figure-eight design.

Although everyone believes that the figure-eight design was an obvious nod to the Chinese belief that the number 8 brings good luck, Melco Crown (which runs Studio City) claims that it is based on “an epic Hollywood-inspired tale of two asteroids careering through Studio City’s two Art Deco hotel towers”

Recommended : Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ : Senado Square At Night!

Golden Reel : Getting There

To get there, you can take a taxi, a public bus, or the free Studio City shuttle bus that goes from the Macau-Zhuhai Border Gate, Macau Ferry Terminal, Macau International Airport, Taipa Ferry Terminal, Macau Peninsula and Macau Tower.

Then you need to head up to the third floor to purchase your ticket, and ride up to the 23rd floor to hop into one of the Golden Reel’s 17 Steampunk-inspired cabins.

Golden Reel : Our Recommendations

Each Golden Reel cabin is air-conditioned, and seats up to 10 people. Every ride lasts about 15 minutes, and costs MOP 100 / HKD 100 per person, which works out to about RM 53 / S$ 17 / US$13 / £10 / A$18.

But if you are going in a group of 5 or more, it might make more sense to opt for their Private Cabin offer. For MOP 750 (HKD 750 / RM395  / S$130 / US$96 / £73 / A$137, you get :

  • the entire cabin to yourself (up to 10 people)
  • unlimited rides for 1 hour, which is 4 rounds
  • a free souvenir photo for the group
  • free cardboard binoculars for everyone in your group

People may call Macau the Las Vegas of the East, but the Cotai Strip is still not as extravagantly built-up as Las Vegas. So the best time to view is :

  • at night, if you are only going for a single ride, or
  • at sunset, if you opted for the Private Cabin and have one full hour to watch the Cotai Strip transition from evening to night.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ : Golden Reel At Night!

As we did in our Senado Square night photography session, we used only the Auto mode, with no manual adjustments – because this is precisely how the vast majority of smartphone users take their photos!

And in case you are wondering, the Golden Wheel cabin does not actually go in a figure eight. It’s like two semi-circular Ferris wheels combined.

As the cabin lights are turned off once it leaves the platform, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ (USUK | AU | SGMY) does a pretty good job of capturing the scenery with minimal reflections off the windows and glass floor.

Just make sure you don’t use any flash because it will not only blind your subjects, it will turn out really badly in your photos.

As long as you are focusing on the brightly-lit scenery below, you should be able to take some nice photos. The cabin moves rather slowly, so you won’t get too many blurry shots.

But it’s still way too dark inside the cabin to take good shots with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ (USUK | AU | SGMY). And you should NOT use your smartphone’s flash.

Instead, use an LED video camera light or another smartphone’s torchlight feature, to cast enough light on the subjects and not drown out the background.

Generally, you will want to hold the LED light / other smartphone high above your head so that the light casts downwards at your subjects.

This will help prevent the light from reflecting off the glass in the back, which you can see in the picture above but not this one below. You can also try bouncing the light off the low ceiling, for a more subtle glow.

For most people, the Golden Reel will be just something to check off the list while visiting Macau. It offers a nice view of the Cotai Strip at night, but I doubt people will want to revisit it.

But if you are there in a group, we highly recommend taking the Private Cabin option, because it buys you time and four rounds of this Ferris wheel to take some nice photos.

Just remember to use a source of extra lighting when taking photos inside the cabin. This will ensure that the faces of your subjects will be well-lit, without blow out the background.

Introducing Senado Square, Macau

Senado Square, also known as the Senate Square, is a famous landmark in Macau featuring beautiful Portuguese pavements. It is part of the Macau World Heritage Site.

Senado Square is always crowded during weekends, but it was especially crowded at night when we arrived as residents and tourists come to revel in the Christmas spirit.

It is also a popular start for many tourists, as the Portuguese pavements lead you past the Leal Senado Building, and the St. Dominic’s Church, on the way to the Ruins of St. Paul and the Monte Fort.

Much of this “trail” has been renovated, with brand new stores replacing old shops. But there is still plenty of great sights here, making it a must-see location for all visitors to Macau.

Recommended : Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ : Golden Reel At Night!

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ : Senado Square At Night!

While the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ has three cameras, we found ourselves using its 12 MP dual-aperture main camera and its 16 MP ultra-wide camera for all of these sample shots.

Its ultra-wide angle camera, which has a viewing angle of 123°, was really useful in taking in the expansive architecture as well as crowds of people.

Try to avoid placing people at the corners though – they end up looking really distorted!

What impressed us about the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ (USUK | AU | SGMY) is how the shots turned out with any fancy manual adjustments.

In our photography samples, we believe in using Auto with no manual adjustments – because this is precisely how the vast majority of smartphone users take their photos!

In this shot of St. Dominic’s Church, note how it accurately captured the yellow facade and green doors in the limited light, while maintaining the proper exposure with a pitch black sky in the background!

With enough street lighting, you can capture decent photos of a fast moving crowd at night without excessive blurring, as this sample shot of nearby Rua de Sao Paulo demonstrates.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10+‘s ability to capture great shots like this, with virtually no preparation, is why it is our favourite smartphone for our personal photos.

Just whip it out for a quick shot, and in almost all cases, you end up with a great shot!

DJI Mavic Mini : Everything You Need To Know!

DJI just introduced their smallest drone ever – the Mavic Mini – that weighs less than 250 g, and flies for a full 30 minutes!

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about the new DJI Mavic Mini camera drone!

The DJI Mavic Mini Camera Drone!

DJI Mavic Mini, an ultra-light folding drone designed to be the everyday FlyCam. Weighing just 249 grams, Mavic Mini is portable, easy to fly, and designed for safety.

Despite its small and light body, Mavic Mini has a high resolution camera, whose footage can be enhanced using its new DJI Fly suite of creative features.

Portable and Safe

The Mavic Mini is the smallest and lightest DJI drone ever made, at just under 250 grams. This puts it in the safest category for drone flights by most aviation regulators around the world.

In addition, safety technologies like geofencing help you avoid restricted areas, AeroScope remote identification help protect sensitive locations, built-in altitude limits, and automatic return to the launch point if the drone loses connection to the controller or reaches critically low battery levels.

It also uses Wi-Fi connectivity for stable transmissions of a HD live feed, GPS receivers, and downward visual sensors to detect the ground below.

Long Flight Time

Thanks to its ultra-light design, and highly efficient motors, it has a flight time of up to 30 minutes, giving you more time to explore and capture content.

High Quality Content

The DJI Mavic Mini lets you capture 2.7K video at 30 fps, and 1080p video at 60 fps. You can also take 12 MP photos using its 1/2.3-inch sensor.

More importantly, it has a three-axis motorised gimbal to stabilise the camera, giving you smooth and cinematic footage.

New Creative Modes

You have a choice of three flying modes, depending on your experience and requirements :

  • Position (P) for basic operations,
  • Sport (S) mode for more experienced pilots,
  • CineSmooth (C) mode for smoother and more cinematic shots.

DJI QuickShots Manoeuvres

You can make use of four QuickShots pre-programmed flight manoeuvres for cinematic effect :

  • Rocket – Mavic Mini flies straight up into the air with the camera pointing downward following your subject. Set a height limit of 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 feet.
  • Circle – Mavic Mini will circle around your subject at a constant altitude and distance.
  • Dronie – Mavic Mini flies backward and upward, with the camera tracking your subject. Set a height limit of 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 feet.
  • Helix – Mavic Mini flies upward and away, spiraling around your subject. Set a height limit of 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 feet.

The Present with Jun-myeon Kim, Seul-ki Kim + Su-bin Yoo!

Samsung just released The Present – a short film featuring Jun-myeon Kim (EXO’s Suho), Seul-ki Kim and Su-bin Yoo! Here is the short film in its entirety!

The Present with Jun-myeon Kim, Seul-ki Kim + Su-bin Yoo!

Inspired by Samsung’s corporate citizenship vision of Enabling People through themes of determination, entrepreneurship and collaboration, it stars Ha-kyun Shin as Sang-gu, a man who time-travels to present-day Seoul from 1969.

Sang-gu meets young entrepreneurs Ha-neul (Jun-myeon Kim, aka EXO’s Suho), Bo-ra (Seul-ki Kim) and Young-bok (Su-bin Yoo) and ends up helping them as they work to create a thermal imaging camera to use in fire and rescue operations.

“I wanted the film to be entertaining,” noted Director Jin-ho Hur, chiefly known for his work in the melodrama genre, “but I also wanted to accurately capture all the joys and sorrows faced by today’s young people as they go about launching their own business endeavors.”

The Present Highlights Samsung Corporate Vision + Ventures

The film is more than just entertainment. It both highlights Samsung’s corporate vision, as well as two key Samsung ventures :

  • Samsung’s venture acceleration program C-Lab Outside, which supports young Korean startups by facilitating optimal environments for them to grow and create new value.
  • Samsung’s IGNIS Thermal Imaging Camera, developed by C-Lab, their in-house corporate incubation program to help firefighters in prevention and rescue activities.

“We hope that ‘The Present’ will encourage young adults who are working hard to keep pursuing their dreams,” said Jae-woong Jeong, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Corporate Communications Team, “and that the film will convey to audiences Samsung’s citizenship vision of Enabling People, which itself reflects the company’s commitment to helping fulfill the innate potential of each and every individual.”

How HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Captures 7680 FPS Video!

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro has a spectacular new video recording feature – the ability to capture 7680 fps ultra-slow motion video!

Find out how the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro is able to capture video at a blazing 7680 frames per second!

The HUAWEI 7680 FPS Video Showcase!

HUAWEI shared with us four new short video samples to showcase the Mate 30 Pro‘s ability to deliver 7680 fps ultra-slow motion video.

Together with two additional videos they released earlier, we created this video showcase of their 7680 fps slow-motion capability.

How HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro Captures 7680 FPS Video!

It would be impossible for a human being to react fast enough to capture the “right moment”, so when you start recording, its NPU (Neural Processing Unit) analyses a second of video to determine the best time start recording at 7680 fps.

This process of analysing the video data and triggering at the right moment is a very strenuous process, using an AI algorithm and about 2 GB of RAM.

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro then captures 945 frames in 120 milliseconds. That approximately 3.5 GB worth of data is then expanded into 32 seconds of 30 fps ultra-slow motion video.

As you can tell, recording video at 7680 fps (frames per second) takes A LOT of processing power.

Even with its powerful Kirin 990 processor, the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro can only do it at the 720p resolution, and only for a fleeting 0.12 seconds.

So if you are wondering when will you be able to record 7680 fps video at 1080p or 4K resolution, or for longer than 0.12 seconds… we did some calculations, and a future smartphone must be capable of processing all this data in an instant :

[adrotate group=”2″]
  • 720p @ 0.24 seconds : 7.0 GB of data
  • 1080p @ 0.12 seconds : 7.8 GB of data
  • 1080p @ 0.24 seconds : 15.6 GB of data
  • 4K @ 0.12 seconds : 31.4 GB of data
  • 4K @ 0.24 seconds : 62.8 GB of data

In addition, all that data must fit into the smartphone’s memory. Such a smartphone would need anywhere from 10 GB to 64 GB of memory!

This is why the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro’s new ability to record 7680 fps video at 720p is, frankly, freaking amazing. The most other flagship smartphones can do is 960 fps at 720p.

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro‘s 7680 fps ultra-slow motion video capability is literally far and above its competitors. 8X better, to be exact!

The HUAWEI 7680 FPS + ISO 25600 Video Showcase!

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro has two spectacular video recording features – the ability to capture ultra-slow motion video at 7680 fps, and ultra-low light video at up to ISO 51200.

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about both features, and our video showcase!

It would be impossible for a human being to react fast enough to capture the “right moment”, so when you start recording, its NPU analyses a second of video to determine the best time start recording at 7680 fps.

This process of analysing the video data and triggering at the right moment is a very strenuous process, using an AI algorithm and about 2 GB of RAM.

  • 4K @ 0.24 seconds : 62.8 GB of data

The HUAWEI Mate 30 High ISO Capability

In low light conditions, it is possible to increase the camera’s ISO value – basically boosting the signal from its image sensor.

While this effectively increases the sensitivity of the image sensor to light hitting its photodiodes, it can increase noise. Therefore, the ability to increase ISO levels without introducing significant noise is highly desirable.

The HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro boasts the ability to increase ISO levels up to ISO 51200, which is incredibly high. What this means is you have greater capability to take photos and record videos in low-light conditions.

Sony IMX586 vs Sony IMX582 Comparison – Which Is Better?

With the launch of the Xiaomi Mi 9T / Redmi K20 and the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro / Redmi K20 Pro, you may be wondering – what’s the difference between the Sony IMX586 and Sony IMX582 image sensors?

At first glance, they are both 48 MP image sensors with pretty much the same specifications. But there is one key difference. Find out what it is, and if it matters to you!

The Sony IMX586 Image Sensor

Sony makes many of the industry’s best image sensors, and their IMX585 is no exception.

First announced on 23 July 2018, the Sony IMX586 was the world’s first image sensor to feature an ultra-small 0.8 μm pixel size.

It is a stacked CMOS image sensor, that uses a Quad Bayer colour filter array – where adjacent 2×2 pixels are in the same colour.

In low-light conditions, signals from four adjacent pixels to be combined into a Super Pixel with the effective pixel size of 1.6 μm pixels. This allows for significantly brighter low-light photos, albeit at 12 MP.

At half an inch, or 8 mm, it is considered a relatively large sensor. Shipping in September 2018, it has so far been used in the Xiaomi Mi 9, the Redmi Note 7 Pro, ASUS 6Z, OnePlus 7 Pro and now, the Mi 9T Pro / K20 Pro.

The Sony IMX582 Image Sensor

The Sony IMX582, on the other hand, is a complete mystery.

Until its introduction in the Xiaomi Mi 9T / Redmi K20, no one has ever heard of it, much less seen it used in any smartphone.

At first glance, it is identical to the Sony IMX586 – a stacked CMOS image sensor with 48 million 0.8 μm pixels that can be combined into 12 million 1.6 μm pixels.

However, we can confirm that the Sony IMX582 is different from the IMX586 in at least one aspect – its 4K video recording capability.

Sony IMX586 vs Sony IMX582

The Sony IMX586 is capable of recording 4K videos at up to 90 fps, but the Sony IMX582 is limited to 4K videos at just 30 fps.

For your convenience, we summarise their specifications in this table :

Specifications Sony IMX586 Sony IMX582
Sensor Size 1/2-inch (8 mm) 1/2-inch (8 mm)
Resolution (Native) 48 MP : 8000 x 6000 pixels 48 MP : 8000 x 6000 pixels
Resolution (Super Pixel Mode) 12 MP : 4000 x 3000 pixels 12 MP : 4000 x 3000 pixels
Pixel Size (Native) 0.8 μm 0.8 μm
Pixel Size (Super Pixel Mode) 1.6 μm 1.6 μm
Video Recording 4K @ 90 fps
1080p @ 240 fps
720p @ 480 fps
4K @ 30 fps
1080p @ 240 fps
720p @ 480 fps

Now, many other websites are saying that the IMX586 can record 4K videos only up to 60 fps, but they are wrong.

They most likely got confused by Xiaomi’s statement that the IMX586 was limited to 4K @ 60 fps in Mi 9 and Mi 9T Pro / K20 Pro smartphones.

The fact is Sony rated the IMX586 for 4K @ 90 fps, but Xiaomi limits 4K video recording to 60 fps in their smartphones.

So Which Is Better – IMX586 or IMX582?

[adrotate group=”2″]

The Sony IMX586 is the superior sensor, by virtue of being able to record 4K video at higher frame rates.

But that feature is moot for many users, because most users do not record 4K videos at 60 fps, never mind 90 fps…

Unless you want to record high speed 4K video, both sensors are practically the same.

In fact, we believe that the IMX582 is really nothing more than the IMX586 with a throttled 4K recording capability.

Realme Chroma Boost Guide + Showcase Of US West Coast!

One of the new photography features of the Realme 3 and Realme 3 Pro smartphones is Chroma Boost – an advanced HDR photography feature!

Find out what Chroma Boost does, and how you can use it to take better photos.

We will also share with you the many Chroma Boost photos we took across the US West Coast!

Realme Chroma Boost Primer

Realme introduced two new photography features in their Realme 3 and Realme 3 Pro smartphones – a Nightscape mode, and Chroma Boost.

Chroma Boost is an advanced HDR feature that goes beyond HDR, which involves taking and combining multiple photos with different exposures.

On top of increasing the photo’s dynamic range, it will also correct and boost colour, while keeping control of noise.

Turning On Chroma Boost

Chroma Boost is so important that Realme made it the second icon at the top of the Camera app.

  1. To turn it on, just open the camera app, and tap on the second icon at the top.
  2. The Chroma Boost Is ON message will appear, and the Chroma Boost icon will appear in colour.

Until you turn it off, every photo your Realme 3 / Realme 3 Pro takes from now on will use Chroma Boost.

Turning Off Chroma Boost

  1. To turn it off, just open the camera app, and tap on the second icon at the top.
  2. The Chroma Boost Is OFF message will appear, and the Chroma Boost icon will turn black and show grey mountains.

When To Use Chroma Boost

Chroma Boost takes a considerable amount of time to take and process each shot – about 3 to 5 seconds.

So it is best used for planned shots of subjects that are not moving much. In fact, that’s the reason why it is turned off by default.

For most candid shots, or occasions where you want to take multiple shots quickly, you will probably want to disable Chroma Boost.

In the next part, we will show you the kind of shots Chroma Boost can deliver with our showcase of the Realme 3 in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Chroma Boost Sample Of Pier 39

This is the famous dock at the end of Pier 39, home to a number of California sea lions. It’s dusk – a really tricky time where the light isn’t great, but it’s not quite the time for using the Nightscape mode.

Surprisingly, it turned out much brighter than in real life, without getting washed out. You can see the sea lions in the foreground, as well as the bright lights of downtown San Francisco at the back.

Chroma Boost Samples Of Lombard Street

No tourist worth his or her name will visit San Francisco without going to the winding Lombard Street, even though it is really NOT the most crooked street in San Francisco.

That title really belongs to Vermont Street, near South of Market, although Lombard Street is definitely more picturesque. Plus, the Powell-Hyde cable car stops at the top!

As it so happened, we were there when the Zoox team decided to test their autonomous vehicle going down Lombard Street!

Chroma Boost Samples Of Alcatraz Island

A short (but expensive) hop off San Francisco is the infamous Alcatraz Island.

It’s ironic how so many people are clamouring to get into Alcatraz when quite a few prisoners (and guards) lost their lives during several escape attempts…

One thing we like about Chroma Boost is how well it keeps control of the highlights, while lifting out details from the shadows.

This picture was taken in very bright sunlight. Yet you can see the blue sky, and even the clouds!

In this example, the former residential apartments are in the shadow, and would normally look dark. But the doors and windows are clearly visible.

It also work great indoors. Especially if you are taking shots of static objects.

Take a close look at this picture. Not only does it have great dynamic range, it managed to capture the bird flying and the Oakland Bay Bridge in the distance.

In fact, you can even see the sloping streets of San Francisco!

It was not easy to get this shot, but well worth the many tries!

The only problem with using Chroma Boost – it limits the number of photos you can take in a certain amount of time. Not very suitable if you are on a fast moving boat!

In this shot of the Alcatraz Cruises pier, with the Transamerica Pyramid and Coit Tower in the background, note the shadows which show the direction of the sun.

Even though it was very bright, and the shadows much darker in real life, Chroma Boost managed to bring the details out of the shadows. And yet, the sky remained blue and not overblown.

Chroma Boost Samples Of Downtown San Francisco

Residential buildings in San Francisco are generally not very unique or interesting architecturally. The slopes of San Francisco are what’s truly interesting and unique.

Only when you get to the San Francisco Chinatown do you see more interesting building designs…

Featured in countless movies, and even torn apart by the likes of Godzilla, a Kaiju, earthquakes, a tsunami and Magneto, it is the very symbol of San Francisco!

But instead of just heading to the Visitor Center, we trekked to Golden Gate Bridge from the south side on a cold misty morning.

Chroma Boost helped to bring out the colour of the foreground, but the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin headlands remained enveloped in mist.

Here is a closer view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the Welcome Center. You can see the bridge trusses clearly detailed, even on its underside.

We then drove over the Golden Gate Bridge to the North Vista Point.

Right next to it is Horseshoe Bay, home to the US Coast Guard Golden Gate Station, and the Presidio Yacht Club.

You can even see Alcatraz Island in the background on the right, and Treasure Island on the far right.

Chroma Boost Samples Of Muir Woods

To the north of San Francisco is the Muir Woods National Monument. Home to giant California redwood trees (Sequoia sempervirens), it is a very beautiful and peaceful place.

Even though these redwoods grow very tall, lighting is not a severe problem for taking photos at the bottom of these giants.

However, if you are attempting to take pictures of them from the bottom up, sunlight could make it really difficult to get a well-exposed shot.

Try using Chroma Boost, or a similar HDR feature, to capture the sunlight shining through the treetops while capturing the intricate bark details that would normally be shrouded in the shadow.

See how well it worked out in these two samples.

Chroma Boost Samples Of Hollywood + Rodeo Drive

We only had a short stay in Los Angeles, so we hit the usual tourist spots in Hollywood and Rodeo Drive.

First up is the TCL Chinese Theatre, located oh the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Many still know it as Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

As it so happened, they barricaded it for the premiere of Catch-22. But this made it a great opportunity to use Chroma Boost – there was no one running across to spoil the shot!

While famous for its luxury boutique stores, Rodeo Drive isn’t very picturesque.

Arguably, the most picturesque spot is this internal street of the Two Rodeo shopping mall, which I believe is known as Via Rodeo Drive?

Chroma Boost Samples Of The Griffith Observatory

Sitting on the top of Mount Hollywood is the Griffith Observatory. It’s an awesome spot to look out at downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood and the Pacific Ocean.

Unfortunately, it was a downcast day when we arrived. But Chroma Boost helped to boost exposure, and give the colours a little more pep.

View of downtown Los Angeles from the Griffith Observatory at 2X digital zoom with the Realme 3.

Despite the downcast skies, Chroma Boost brightened the sky and visibly increased the colour of the houses in the foreground.

It is actually possible to use Chroma Boost with moving indoor objects like this Foucault’s Pendulum. Look at the colour.

You just have to time it so that movement is minimal. In this case, it took us several tries to catch the pendulum at the end of the swing.

Chroma Boost Samples Of Santa Monica

What’s a trip to Los Angeles without a trip to the world famous Santa Monica Pier?

Over a hundred years old, it is a large, double-jointed pier that juts out of the end of Colorado Avenue into the Pacific Ocean.

It is more than just a pier, of course. It is home to Pacific Park, an amusement park, shops, pubs and restaurants.

Right at the very end is also a very popular angling spot.

Chroma Boost can really bring out the colours that are usually hidden in the shadows, like the pillars of the Santa Monica pier.

Despite being almost dusk, using Chroma Boost can increase the brightness of the scene.

Opened in 1996, Pacific Park is a 2-acre amusement park that is open to public on the Santa Monica Pier.

It was really getting pretty dark, so Chroma Boost came in handy in boosting the exposure of the scene, while keeping the colours looking pretty pep.

On the way back, we stopped by the Santa Monica 3rd Promenade, home of this Triceratops water fountain sculpture.

Despite the low light (it was dusk!), Chroma Boost helped to keep the Triceratops sculpture well-exposed, without overblowing the brightly-lit cafe in the background.

Any darker, we would definitely have to use the Nightscape mode!

The Ultimate Apple Pro Display XDR Configuration Guide!

The new Apple Pro Display XDR is the pinnacle of Apple display engineering. But before you splash out thousands of dollars for it, do you know which configuration you really need?

In this configuration guide, find out options you have and what you should choose for the ultimate Pro Display XDR monitor! We even created a special infographic to help you make that choice!

The Apple Pro Display XDR Monitor

The Apple Pro Display XDR is a new 6K IPS display that is designed to complement the new 2019 Mac Pro workstation.

It boasts a 32-inch panel with a 6K resolution of 6016 x 3384 pixels, and Extreme Dynamic Range (XDR) capability with 576 local dimming zones!

Of course, HDR monitors have been around for some time now, with 384-zone models being introduced last year.

On top of that, it delivers 1000 nits of sustained brightness, with a peak brightness of 1600 nits! It also boasts dual ambient light sensors, to ensure an accurate viewing experience in any ambient lighting condition. Kind of like BenQ’s Brightness Intelligence Plus technology

Why You NEED The Apple Pro Display XDR Monitor!

The Apple Pro Display XDR is the ultimate display for hardcore Apple fans, and graphics professionals who believe it’s the Viagra they need to perform at their very best.

It is designed to do two things – give you an ultra-premium 6K display experience, and the Tim Cook-anointed right to thumb your nose at the 99.9% hoi polloi.

Because when you have the Apple Pro Display XDR, you know you have proven your worth.

You are the TOP 0.1%. You are the BEST graphics designer in the world. The ULTIMATE Apple fan.

Apple Pro Display XDR Configuration Options

Don’t bother explaining to the ignorant rabble (or your boss) why you NEED the Pro Display XDR. Focus on what options you should select.

Standard vs Nano-Texture Finish

Everyone knows that graphics designers lose their eyesight after years of peeking at pixels. Remember how many times you mistook the glare off your display as an actual light flare?

To avoid that kind of problem, you can now pay Apple $1000 to etch a nano-texture pattern on your Pro Display XDR!

Our Verdict : The standard finish is for cheap schlubs. Go Nano-Texture, or go home!

Pro Stand / VESA Mount / Handheld?

The Pro Stand ($999), of course! It does everything a good monitor stand has been capable of doing for the past several decades, but with the flair and price tag that only awesome graphics designers like you understand.

The VESA Mount Adapter ($199) lets you hook up the Pro Display XDR onto walls, multi-monitor stands, or if you are really cheap – onto a non-Apple monitor stand.

But if you employ slave labour, you can always go old-school and have your slave hold it (FREE!). Remember – the Pro Stand does not support Siri… YET, so the slave route is the only way to control your Pro Display XDR by voice commands.

The Apple Pro Mug XDR Infographic

To make the choices simpler to understand, we created this special infographic, which uses an Apple Pro Mug XDR analogy to translate all those technical gobbledygook into something professional graphics designers can understand at a glance.

If you walk around with a standard finish, everyone’s going to know you are just another 0.1% wannabe. SHOW the world you are part of the REAL 0.1% with that matte nano-texture finish!

The Pro Handle will let you take the Apple Pro Mug XDR to the limits. Fill it with super-hot coffee or liquid nitrogen – all without fear of injuring your hand!

And the Pro Handle has special magnetic connectors, so you can easily detach the Pro Mug XDR, to attach it to a separate Pro Handle! Now you can share your drink without sharing the same handle! How hygienic!

If you must opt for the Universal Sleeve, tell people you are not being cheap – you are just being environmentally-friendly. Cardboard is recyclable and the Universal Sleeve does not use rare earth magnets!

The Realme Selfie Guide + Showcase Of US West Coast!

Realme smartphones are not known for the selfies, which is a shame. We took the Realme 3 on a trip across the US West Coast, and here is our Realme selfie guide and showcase!

Find out what settings you should use on Realme smartphones, and check out the selfies we took from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles!

Don’t forget to also check out our Realme Nightscape Guide For Awesome Night Shots!

The Realme 3 Selfie Camera

The Realme 3 selfie camera has a higher-resolution 13 MP sensor with a brighter f/2.0 lens. The Realme 2, you may recall, has an 8 MP front camera with f/2.2 lens.

Its f/2.0 aperture puts its front camera on par with many flagship-class smartphones like the HUAWEI Mate 20, the Samsung Galaxy A9 2018, the HONOR 20, and the OPPO R17 Pro.

Its higher-end brother, the Realme 3 Pro, also has a front camera with a wide f/2.0 aperture. The only difference is it has a higher-resolution 25 MP sensor, instead of a 13 MP sensor.

The Realme Selfie Camera Guide

We highly recommend that you enable these settings before you start shooting – Location, Flip Selfie, and Auto HDR. These are the common settings you find in other Realme smartphones, like the Realme 2 Pro and the Realme 3 Pro.

Location

While travelling in the US, we do not always have time to note the exact location (building, street address, etc.) where we take these photos.

Enabling Location lets the Realme 3 add the GPS coordinates to every photo, so you can always look up the location when you get back.

Flip Selfie

We highly recommend turning on the Flip Selfie option, which basically gives you a mirror image of the selfie. This is important because it makes sure any text in the background will be readable.

This was not enabled by default, which led to some of our selfies not turning out right. Make sure you enable this option before you start taking your selfies!

Auto HDR

Selfies are often impromptu… spontaneous… There’s very little time to set-up a selfie, unless you’re an influencer and you would have a buddy or two, with LED lighting, etc (you get the idea).

This is why you should make sure Auto HDR is enabled. It lets the Realme 3 automatically decide when is the best time to take HDR shots (combining multiple shots with different exposures).

HDR will bring out the details in both dark and overexposed areas of a photo, while increasing the picture’s dynamic range. Take a look at this example :

Without Auto HDR, both faces in this selfie shot would be too dark because of the overly bright background.

It may not be obvious in the picture above, but it was CRAZY HOT and BRIGHT at the Grand Canyon when I took that photo in the shade. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out!

Realme 3 Selfie Samples From Boulder City

After landing in Las Vegas, we headed straight for Boulder City, which is a small town about 30 minutes away.

You will pass it on the way to the Grand Canyon, or Hoover Dam. So it’s a great place to stop for the night, especially if you plan to visit Hoover Dam.

But first, we had some burger and chicken fingers at The Chicken Shack. The folks here are extremely friendly! 😄

Here is Nick with the Double Shack burger, with double beef patties and cheese. Only$9.79 before taxes, , with a side of fries and a drink!

And here are Steve and Justin with my order of chicken fingers! 😄

The chicken tenders here are large strips of chicken breast meat. I prefer dark meat, but they were juicy and tender. Only $7.99 for 5 of “em!

This is Allyson from the Boulder Pit Stop, serving our Pit Burger and Turkey Burger. Seriously great burgers even without adding cheese, bacon or mushrooms.

The Pit Burger with a 1/3 lb patty is only $5.75 before taxes, and the Turkey Burger only $4.50 before taxes. If you’re ever going to Boulder City, make sure you try them out!

Realme 3 Selfie Samples From Hoover Dam

The best view of Hoover Dam is actually midway across the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

Just turn off about a mile after the security check point, and walk up to the Memorial Plaza, which leads to the pedestrian walkway of the bridge.

There’s no need to walk all the way to the end. Just walk until you get a picture you like, or to the mid-point, so you can have one foot in Nevada, and another foot in Arizona! 😀

The lifts were undergoing maintenance so there were no tours that day. However, Hoover Dam tour guides like Alan gave us a presentation on the Hoover Dam instead.

You can feel the pride and love they have for this American engineering marvel!

Realme 3 Selfie Samples From The Grand Canyon

Being short on time, we took a short plane + helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon at a Boulder City airport.

Scott here took us on a short cruise down the Colorado river, through the Grand Canyon West Rim.

The bulk of the Grand Canyon West Rim (seen behind us) belongs to the US National Park, while the opposing side is part of the Hualapai Indian Reservation.

It was CRAZY HOT and really bright at the Grand Canyon that day, but thanks to its Auto HDR capability, this selfie taken at Guano Point turned out much better than I expected!

Since it was so bright, I expected harsh shadows on our faces, and a terribly blown-out background. Yet, the shadows were surprisingly soft, and you can clearly see the Grand Canyon in the back, and even the clouds and the blue sky!

Realme 3 Selfie Samples From Las Vegas

It’s been years since my last visit to Las Vegas, and while much has remained the same, a lot has changed!

Here is the venerable Las Vegas landmark – the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas signboard!

While it has not changed, it has been upgraded with a special parking lot built into the median, so tourists can park and not get hit by traffic on both sides of the Las Vegas Boulevard! 😅

I then spent three days at Dell Technologies World 2019, where I met really nice people like Stephanie Silva from McLaren…

And Ben Driscoll and Kendall Peters, who ran the always-busy Press and Analyst Room!

We also had the opportunity to meet and take selfies with the incredibly funny and entertaining Penn & Teller!

These guys are AWESOME! If you can only catch one magic show in Las Vegas, you MUST catch Penn & Teller.

Realme 3 Selfie Samples From San Francisco

After so many days in Sin City, we flew ourselves to San Francisco, and checked ourselves into the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary!

Located just 1.25 miles or just over 2 km from the San Francisco, it served as a federal prison for 29 years. during which 36 prisoners tried to escape.

Ironically, hundreds of tourists now pay good money to visit Alcatraz every day! 😅

Welcoming us was Ray Hood, a volunteer with the US National Parks Service.

He commutes from Sacramento to help US Park Rangers like Wendy Solis here educate visitors on the rich history of Alcatraz, and to warn us about being “painted white” by the current avian occupants of Alcatraz…

Prison chow at Alcatraz did not agree with us, so we escaped on a boat and headed to the Fisherman’s Wharf, where Ernesto served us Boudin’s new crab chowder in a sourdough bowl!

I met Rodrigo “Roy” Gutierrez outside of Pier 33. He spray painted that piece for me in just 5 minutes! 🤩

Again, Auto HDR kicked in for a nicely exposed photo, even though it was a dastardly bright day.

While I was in San Francisco, I had my MacBook Pro checked out by Brennan Duong at Apple Store Union Square.

Finally, we had to stop by The Baked Bear for their humungous and really delicious ice-cream sandwiches! This is Sam with my 🐻tastic ice-cream sandwich!

That’s a 🐻 of an ice-cream sandwich! Not a 🐨 or a 🐼 but an actual 🐻… 😁

We originally planned to have one each, but it was so big – we had to share!

Realme 3 Selfie Samples From Los Angeles

We only had a short time in LA, but I had the opportunity to chat with Officer Raviol of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Joshua thinks he looks like Nicholas Cage. I think he looks like Arnold Vosloo. What do YOU think? 😁

The Realme Nightscape Guide For Awesome Night Shots!

The Realme 3 is a mid-range smartphone with flagship aspirations. It is full of features that are usually found only in flagship smartphones. Like its Nightscape mode.

Let’s take a look at what the Realme Nightscape mode does, and show you how it can be used to take really awesome night shots!

Nightscape Mode

The Nightscape mode was first introduced in the Realme 3, and included in the recently-launched Realme 3 Pro.

It uses artificial intelligence, multi-frame capture and an anti-shake algorithm to produce significantly better low-light photos.

Nightscape Mode In Realme 3

When used in the Realme 3 smartphone, Nightscape delivers these improvements :

  • Increased exposure in dim lighting, allowing for better low-light photography
  • Better control of overexposed areas, bringing out details that would normally be washed out
  • Brightening underexposed areas, allowing details to emerge from the shadows
  • Keep noise under control, even in dark areas

Nightscape Mode In Realme 3 Pro

In addition to the above, the higher-end Realme 3 Pro will take multiple frames in the RAW format. This allows it to create Nightscape photos with more detail, greater brightness with lower noise and motion blur.

How To Turn On Nightscape Mode

Here is a short guide on how to turn on Nightscape mode in the Realme 3 smartphone. It should be the same for the Realme 3 Pro.

When To Use Nightscape

Now, as great as Nightscape mode is, there is a reason why Realme did not turn it on by default.

Each Nightscape shot takes between 4 to 7 seconds to complete – multiple shots are taken over 3 seconds, and it takes anywhere from 1 to 4 seconds to process them.

So you need to decide when is a good time to use Nightscape, and when you can skate by without it. After all, the Realme 3 and Realme 3 Pro have great cameras with fast, bright lenses.

Not Necessary : With Decent Lighting

Sometimes, an indoor scene may not seem bright enough. But the Realme 3 and Realme 3 Pro have bright, fast lenses – f/1.8 and f/1.7 respectively.

This corridor in The Venetian Las Vegas was not brightly-lit, but there was no need to use Nightscape to create such a great photo.

Worth Trying : When There Is A Mix Of Good And Poor Lighting

There will be times when some parts of a scene are well-lit, while other parts are not. It’s worth using Nightscape to bring out the details in the shadows.

Recommended : When There Is Poor Lighting

The Siegfried and Roy Commemorative Statue is not directly lit at night, although hey, it’s Las Vegas so there’s indirect lighting from across the street!

Still, it is recommended to use Nightscape to bring out details in the shadows, and reduce noise in the dark areas.

Realme 3 Nightscape Comparison Photo Samples (Part 1)

We took the Realme 3 to Las Vegas for a photography session. Here is a comparison of various scenes with and without Nightscape mode.

You should see better results with the Realme 3 Pro, which supports multi-frame recording and processing in RAW.

Treasure Island

Now, do remember that this is Las Vegas, so it’s pretty much brightly-lit at night. But that doesn’t mean it is an easy night shot, because the brighter lights can and do throw off the camera, causing it to underexpose the photo.

Take this example of Treasure Island. The bright LED billboard literally fooled the camera into thinking its very bright, and so the photo came out underexposed.

But turning on Nightscape captures a multitude of photos over 3 seconds, so the camera won’t get fooled by a single take.

The result – a well-exposed photo where the bright billboard is not overly-exposed, and yet you can see details of the much darker hotel building.

The Mirage Volcano

The Mirage Volcano was also a difficult shot. The volcano was lit by lights in the water, which cast deep shadows at the top.

It also made the background much darker in comparison. In fact, the trees behind the volcano appeared pitch black, while the tree on the upper right corner was cloaked in darkness.

When we took the same shot with Nightscape mode, you can now see details of the volcano top that was earlier hidden in the shadows.

You can also see the colour and details of the trees in the background. And not only can you clearly see the tree on the upper right corner, you can even see that there is another tree next to it!

The Venetian

There is lots of bright lights in this sample of The Venetian. But there are also lots of areas that appear significantly darker in comparison.

Turning on Nightscape not only brought out those darker areas, the brighter areas had a more natural, warmer look. It was essentially creating a HDR image, with greater dynamic range.

Of course, your results will vary depending on the lighting conditions. In this example, the differences are less significant.

Realme 3 Nightscape Comparison Photo Samples (Part 2)

Generally, Nightscape will produce greater dynamic range by combining multiple photos, as these other samples will show.

You may be tempted to use it for all of your night shots even if there is plenty of light.

However, you have to balance that against the fact that it takes a few seconds to take each shot.

The PRO Mode Photography Guide For HUAWEI P30 Series!

The HUAWEI P30 Series smartphones have a PRO Mode, which allows photographers to push the boundaries of creativity and possibilities.

This allows them to create photographs that are comparable to those from DSLR cameras!

Learn the PRO Mode tricks professional photographers use with the HUAWEI P30 Series smartphones, and check out some amazing examples of their work!

How To Activate PRO Mode For The HUAWEI P30 Series Smartphone

First, let us show you how to activate PRO Mode for the HUAWEI P30 Series smartphones.

  1. Turn on the camera app in the HUAWEI P30 or HUAWEI P30 Pro.
  2. Look for the camera mode options located just above the shutter button.
  3. Swipe left until you select the Pro option, as shown below.

The PRO Mode Options

After you select the PRO mode, you will see more options appear above it. These are photographic functions – ISO, S, EV, AF, AWB – that you can use to create really awesome photos.

PRO Mode Function #1 : ISO Sensitivity

ISO represents the light sensitivity of the camera. For example, we can select this function and increase the ISO sensitivity to increase the brightness of a photo, particularly when you take photos in poor lighting.

Increasing the ISO sensitivity will make the photo brighter in low-light, but there will be more noise. On the other hand, you can also lower the ISO in very bright conditions, which has the side effect of reducing noise.

PRO Mode Function #2 : Shutter Speed (S)

The Shutter Speed function determines whether we can capture fast-moving objects like a car or train.

The faster the shutter speed, the greater the ability to “freeze” their movement. Alternatively, you can lower the shutter speed to capture the light strobes of traffic flow.

PRO Mode Function #3 : Exposure (EV)

The Exposure (EV) function is useful in adjusting for adverse lighting conditions, like when the sunlight is just too bright. You can use this function to decrease the exposure so that your subjects look great even under the blazing sun!

PRO Mode Function #4 : Autofocus (AF)

The Autofocus function has three options – AF-S, AF-C and MF.

  • AF-S (Autofocus Single) : Best for photographing objects that do not move, like portraits or flowers. You can use it to lock focus on the subject, before adjusting your composition.
  • AF-C (Autofocus Continuous) : Useful for photographing a moving subject, like a dog or a car. After you lock focus on the moving subject, the camera will automatically adjust its focus as it moves towards or away from you.
  • MF (Manual Focus) : This may be useful for creative compositions where you want an off-focus effect.

PRO Mode Function #5 : Auto White Balance (AWB)

The PRO Mode includes a white balancing feature, with five options :

  • AWB (Auto White Balance) : This is the default option, which automatically adjusts for the ambient lighting condition.
  • Cloudy : This works better under overcast skies.
  • Fluorescent : This corrects for discolouration under fluorescent lighting, as well as mercury and sodium-vapour lamps.
  • Incandescent : This corrects for discolouration under incandescent lighting.
  • Direct Sunlight : This is best used when the subject is lit by direct sunlight.

PRO Mode Function #6 : Metering

The HUAWEI P30 Series smartphones have three metering options :

  • Spot metering : The camera will only measure the exposure of the centre (1-5%) of the image.
  • Center-weighted average metering : The exposure of the centre will be weighted more (60-80%) than the peripheral.
  • Multi-zone evaluative metering : This is the default option, which uses a variety of factors to automatically decide the best exposure for the photo.

How To Win In The HUAWEI Photography Contests!

Here are some tips and tricks on how to submit great photos and win prizes from those HUAWEI photography contests!

Once you go through them, you will be ready to start submitting awesome photos to the HUAWEI photography contests!

Low Light Photography

The HUAWEI P30 Pro Leica Camera  has a new SuperSpectrum sensor with a maximum ISO sensitivity of 409,600 for clearer and sharper lowlight photography.

You don’t need a tripod. Simply frame your shot, and press the shutter button to get your ideal photo in lowlight conditions!

Low Light Photo Example #1

Taking sunset shots has always been challenging, with the fear of losing details due to low light conditions.

However, the HUAWEI P30 Pro in its AI mode has helped me to achieve balanced shadows and highlights.

Check out how awesome the details are for both the sky and the sea. Backlight? No problem with the HUAWEI P30 Pro!

Low Light Photo Example #2

As I was on vacation in Bali, I stayed in Club Med which has Balinese architecture paired with natural elements like trees, lakes and grasslands.

This is actually a signature spot in the resort as all guests will have to walk past this stretch of rooms to reach their own.

One night, as I was walking back to the room after dinner, I realised that the night was exceptionally dark.

I knew that it was the perfect time to take a photo using the main 40MP sensor on the HUAWEI P30 Pro as it is using a new RYYB sensor, it can actually capture 40% more light than usual.

With the help of f1.6 aperture lens, I was confident that it will turn out amazing.

Well, I was right. This photo was taken with just a tap of the shutter button. No night mode or tripod needed. It’s simply mind blowing.

For the elements in the photo, I intentionally aligned the separation of real building and reflection to be 50% on top and 50% bottom to clearly show the difference and to fully expose the reflection on the lake’s surface.

Super Zoom Photography

Thanks to its new periscope lens design, the HUAWEI P30 Pro SuperZoom capability gives you amazing reach with 5X optical zoom, 10X hybrid zoom and up to 50X optical zoom!

The camera is kept steady by optical image stabilisation (OIS), so you can take faraway shots that look sharp, with great detail!

Super Zoom Photo Example #1

Sultan Abdul Samad Building with a ultra-wide angle lens (top), 10X zoom (middle), and 50X zoom (bottom)

As one of the most iconic buildings in Malaysian history, I decided to choose this building as my subject for its heritage and cultural values.

And thanks to Huawei P30 Pro with its Ultra-Wide Lens and Superzoom function, I managed to capture a famous section of the building, as well as the iconic clock tower as my Superzoom target.

Tips: try to use the Landscape mode if you’re shooting low-rise buildings.

Super Zoom Photo Example #2

The Moroccan Pavilion, Putrajaya with an ultra-wide angle lens (top), 5X zoom (middle), and 50X zoom (bottom)

Did you know that there is a piece of Morocco in Malaysia? Tucked away in a corner of the Putrajaya Botanical Gardens lies the exquisite Moroccan Pavilion, Putrajaya known as Astaka Morocco.

The detailing leaves me in awe. This spectacular shot was achieved with the Ultra-Wide Mode on the HUAWEI P30 Pro.

The key to a clear and sharp photo is the lighting. Explore and catch a good frame with the best lighting, find your angle, and snap! Use these tips with the Ultra-Wide Mode, and nothing will go wrong!

Ultra-Wide Angle Photography

The ultra-wide angle lens of the HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro smartphones greatly increase the sense of space, giving your landscape photos look more impressive!

Ultra-Wide Angle Photo Example

Club Med Bali has a beautiful pool deck with vibrant red umbrellas that captures the attention of all guests.

As I was having breakfast in the morning at around 9am, I noticed that the shadow casting on the ground looks very interesting and I knew it would make a great ultra-wide angle shot.

Since it was early, the area wasn’t filled with people yet. So, I quickly decided to use the HUAWEI P30 Pro to capture this scene using the ultra-wide angle lens.

This was the only shot I took as it looked great instantly. The sky was not over exposed, allowing clouds to appear clearly while the shadow areas are balanced nicely with details still intact.

I took this from the first floor of the building, hence I could cover more areas further back into the scene.

Super Macro Photography

The ultra-wide angle lens also has a very short focus distance, letting you get in as close as 2.5 cm for macro photography!

Adjust the zoom to 0.6X to enter the Ultra-Wide Angle Mode. When you get real close to the subject, the camera will automatically enter the Super Macro Mode. Easy peasy!

Super Macro Photo Example #1

These are the wings of Malaysia’s national butterfly, the Rajah Brooke’s birdwing butterfly. It is also the largest species in Malaysia.

Butterflies have some of the most stunning colours, lines and textures that are usually unseen by the human eye.

The super macro mode on the HUAWEI P30 Pro managed to help capture such details, where you can notice thousands of tiny scales responsible for the magnificent colour characteristics of butterflies.

It’ll be good to note that this was captured handheld without any assisting accessories!

Portrait Photography

The HUAWEI P30 Pro has a Time of Flight (TOF) camera that is used for portrait photography. It sends out pulses of near infra-red light to accurately map the subject and separate it from the background. This allows for a more accurate and natural bokeh effect.

Just select the Portrait mode, and make sure your subject is less than 2 metres away, for the ToF camera to work properly.

Portrait Photo Example #1

Shadowed areas are well enhanced on the portrait mode using the HUAWEI P30 Pro thanks to the AI mode which helps me capture great portrait shots when it detects a face.

I’m shocked that even under harsh sunlight, I can still capture the Pakcik’s face clearly even from a low angle shot.

Portrait Photo Example #2

This shot was taken earlier this month during Street Meet Johor, a photography event that gathers photographers and models that I organised.

I saw this event as an opportunity for me to test out the new HUAWEI P30 Pro to take some portrait shots and I wasn’t disappointed.

The trick for me is to ensure your portraits look as natural as it can be, you can adjust the Beauty Effect to lowest level possible to reduce the glowy effect.

Also, natural lighting is always the best choice.

Backlit Portrait Photography

The HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro camera features the AI HDR+ technology, which uses AI algorithms to identify elements in the frame, like faces, buildings and the sun, to create an exposure map and intelligently apply it to minimise blown highlights while brightening shadows.

Just select the HDR mode, and wait for the focus on the subject to lock in, before shooting. It’s that simple!

How The P30 Leica Camera Rewrites The Rules Of Photography!

The new HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro are more than just smartphones. They boast a new Leica camera that was designed specifically to “rewrite the rules of photographyIn this article, we will look at how the new P30 Leica camera delivers new heights of mobile photography!

How The P30 Leica Camera Rewrites The Rules Of Photography!

Here are the top five P30 Leica camera features that will rewrite the rules of mobile photography.

New RYYB Image Sensor

The new P30 Leica camera uses a new RYYB image sensor that collects 40% more light than traditional RGGB image sensors. This allows the HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro to take photos even in near darkness.

Believe it or not, the picture below was taken by the HUAWEI P30 Pro in near darkness – just 1 lux of light!

SuperZoom Capability

The HUAWEI P30 Leica camera uses a new periscope telephoto lens design to deliver more optical zoom with optical image stabilisation.

  • HUAWEI P30 : 3X optical zoom5X hybrid zoom, 30X maximum zoom.
  • HUAWEI P30 Pro : 5X optical zoom, 10X hybrid zoom, 50X maximum zoom.

How useful is SuperZoom? Take a look at this 10X hybrid zoom sample of the Milan Cathedral.

Even though it was taken at night, you can clearly see not only the words, Mariae Nascenti; but also the intricate details of the stained glass and wall carvings.

SuperZoom also allows for easier wildlife photography. This shot, for example, was taken from a distance of 10 meters.

Both SuperZoom and the ultra-high resolution of the 40 MP main camera allows for great sports photography. You can capture the action from a distance, and “zoom in” even after taking the photo!

TOF Camera

The HUAWEI P30 Pro comes with a ToF (Time-of-Flight) camera which creates a 3D map of objects and their distances.

This allows the P30 Pro to accurately separate the subject from the background, for accurate retouching and background blurring. This sample demonstrates how the background is blurred with a natural bokeh effect without affecting the mother and her son.

AI HDR+ Technology

One of the most challenging photos to take is of a subject with a bright background. Even worse if the sun is in the back!

To address this, both HUAWEI P30 and P30 Pro use AI HDR+ to let the front or rear cameras take multiple photos in quick succession. They are then combined to eliminate overexposed and backlit images, bringing out the subject, without overblowing the bright background.
