Canon just launched the EOS-1D X Mark III – especially designed for photography professionals.

Let’s find out from Canon what’s new in the EOS-1D X Mark III, and if this is the DSLR camera for you!

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III : Key Features Explained!

Let’s start with a presentation by Jack Kik, the Senior Product Specialist from Canon Malaysia, on the key features of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III.

Here is a quick TLDR summary of its key features :

  • A new 20.1 megapixel 35 mm full frame CMOS sensor
  • Continuous shooting speeds of up to 16 fps (viewfinder shooting), and up to 20 fps (Live View) with AF/AE tracking
  • DIGIC X image processor with CFexpress media (dual slots), which allows a burst rate of approximately 1000 shots (RAW + JPEG)
  • New AF sensor combined with AI Servo AF IV delivers significant improvement in AF speed and tracking performance
  • 4K UHD and 4K DCI movie recording at 60p/50p, and supports Canon Log 4:2:2 10-bit in-camera recording
  • In-camera recording of 5.5K RAW movies with simultaneous MP4 files
  • Built-in Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi with FTP. Supports 5 GHz wireless LAN and compatible with 2×2 MIMO when used with WFT-E9

Improved Autofocus Performance

Its new 20.1 megapixel sensor adopts a square pixel design, with a 28X increase in pixel density for both vertical and horizontal directions.

This increases its available AF points in the optical viewfinder to 191 points, from just 61 points in the EOS-1D X Mark II. Its AF points support exposure of up to f/8 with 65 cross-type AF points, allowing for better AF accuracy.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III : Key Features Explained!

Greatly Improved Performance

Its new DIGIC X processor is 3X faster than the Mark II’s dual DIGIC 6+ processors in image processing, and up to 380X faster in general computing performance, delivering much faster subject recognition and tracking performance.

Better Noise Reduction

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II reduces noise in both the CMOS sensor, as well as DIGIG X image processing, increasing the upper limit of normal ISO speed by one stop to 102,400.

Its image quality in the ISO 6400-12800 range, frequently used by sports and news photographers, has also been improved with better noise control.

Higher Image Quality

Its new 16-point low-pass filter reduces moiré and colour distortion, as well as image resolution. This low-pass filter also incorporates Gaussian filter features to better work with high-resolution lenses.

The EOS-1D X Mark III now supports HDR OQ HEIF – a 10-bit recording standard that uses a high-resolution and low-noise approach, to reproduce an image that is sharper and much closer to reality.

Faster Burst Shots

Burst shooting speed has been increased to 16 frames per second. This may cause a blackout of the viewfinder, interrupting your tracking of the subject.

To avoid that, the EOS-1D X Mark III has a new mirror system with a high-speed mechanism to retract and reset the mirror, combined with an optical system that displays images in real time.

For Live View shooting, it can perform burst shots at up to 20 frames per second for both RAW and RAW+JPEG recording.

4K Recording Without Cropping

The EOS-1D X Mark III is the first Canon full-frame camera to support 4K video recording, without cropping. In addition to the 4K UHD 16:9 standard by ITU, it also supports the 4K DCI 17:9 standard by Digital Camera Initiative.

It supports Canon Log YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit video output and ITU-R BT.2020 colour gamut. For wider colour gradation, vivid colour range and smaller file size, it encodes video using H.265 HEVC encoding.

Dual CFexpress Card Slots

The EOS-1D X Mark III comes with dual CFexpress card slots. The ultra fast transfer rate of CFexpress media, coupled with its extended buffer memory, lets the Mark III achieve a continuous burst rate of 1,000 RAW shots.

The Mark III can shoot continuously for a full minute at 16 fps, while the EOS-1D X Mark II can only shoot at 14 fps for just 12 seconds.

Enhanced Connectivity

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III comes with a built-in GPS receiver, and Wi-Fi connectivity with FTP functions. This lets you maintain a log of your shooting locations, and transfer your files off the camera to your computer wirelessly.

But should you prefer to use a cable, it supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 – offering twice the speed of USB 3.0.
