Kaspersky Lab Finds Security Weaknesses in Clinic IT

25 March 2016 – A Kaspersky Lab Global Research & Analysis Team (GReAT) expert has conducted real field research at one private clinic in an attempt to explore its security weaknesses and how to address them. Vulnerabilities were found in medical devices that opened a door for cybercriminals to access the personal data of patients, as well as their physical well-being.

A modern clinic is a complicated system. It has sophisticated medical devices that comprise fully functional computers with an operating system and applications installed on them. Doctors rely on computers, and all information is stored in a digital format. In addition, all healthcare technologies are connected to the Internet.

So, it comes as no surprise that both medical devices and hospital IT infrastructure have previously been targeted by hackers. The most recent examples of such incidents are ransomware attacks against hospitals in the US and Canada. But a massive malicious attack is only one way in which criminals could exploit the IT infrastructure of a modern hospital.


Clinics store personal information about their patients. They also own and use very expensive, hard to fix and replace equipment, which makes them a potentially valuable target for extortion and data theft.

The outcome of a successful cyberattack against a medical organization could differ in detail but will always be dangerous. It could involve the following:

  • The felonious use of personal patient data: the resale of information to third parties or demanding the clinic pay a ransom to get back sensitive information about patients;
  • The intentional falsification of patient results or diagnoses;
  • Medical equipment damage may cause both physical damage to patients and huge financial losses to a clinic;
  • Negative impact on the reputation of a clinic.


Exposure to the Internet

The first thing that a Kaspersky Lab expert decided to explore, while conducting this research, was to understand how many medical devices around the globe are now connected to the Internet. Modern medical devices are fully-functional computers with an operating system and most of these have a communication channel to the Internet. By hacking them, criminals could interfere with their functionality.

A quick look over the Shodan search engine for Internet-connected devices showed hundreds of devices – from MRI scanners, to cardiology equipment, radioactive medical equipment and other related devices are registered there. This discovery leads to worrisome conclusions – some of these devices still work on old operational systems such as Windows XP, with unpatched vulnerabilities, and some even use default passwords that can be easily found in public manuals.

Using these vulnerabilities criminals could access a device interface and potentially affect the way it works.


Inside clinic’s local network

The above mentioned scenario was one of the ways in which cybercriminals could get access to the clinic’s critical infrastructure. But the most obvious and logical way is to try to attack its local network. And here we go: during the research a vulnerability was found in the clinic’s Wi-Fi connection. Through a weak communications protocol access to the local network was gained.

Exploring the local clinic’s network, the Kaspersky Lab expert found some medical equipment that was previously found on Shodan. This time however, to get access to the equipment one didn’t need any password at all – because the local network was a trusted network for medical equipment applications and users. This is how a cybercriminal can gain access to a medical device.

Further exploring the network, the Kaspersky Lab expert discovered a new vulnerability in a medical device application. A command shell was implemented in the user’s interface that could give cybercriminals access to personal patient information, including their clinical history and information about medical analysis, as well as their addresses and ID details. Moreover, through this vulnerability the whole device controlled with this application could be compromised. For example, among these devices could be MRI scanners, cardiology equipment, radioactive and surgical equipment.

Firstly, criminals could alter the way the device works and cause physical damage to the patients. Secondly, criminals could damage the device itself at immense cost to the hospital.

“Clinics are no longer only doctors and medical equipment, but IT services too. The work of a clinic’s internal security services affects the safety of patient data and the functionality of its devices. Medical software and equipment engineers put a lot of effort into creating a useful medical device that will save and protect human life, but they sometimes completely forget about protecting it from unauthorized external access. When it comes to new technologies, safety issues should be addressed at the first stage of the research and development (R&D) process.

IT security companies could help at this stage to address safety issues”, mentions Sergey Lozhkin, senior researcher at Kaspersky Lab’s GReAT.

Kaspersky Lab experts recommend implementing the following measures to protect clinics from unauthorized access:

  • Use strong passwords to protect all external connection points;
  • Update IT security policies, develop on time patch management and vulnerability assessments;
  • Protect medical equipment applications in the local network with passwords in case of an unauthorized access to the trusted area;
  • Protect infrastructure from threats like malware and hacking attacks with a reliable security solution;
  • Backup critical information regularly and keep a backup copy offline.

By 2020, four billion people will be online, 50 billion devices will be connected to the internet and data volumes will be an astounding 50 times greater than what we are seeing today.

This enormous explosion of connected devices and data flows and the complexity that comes with it, will make it more challenging than ever before for individuals, organizations and nations to protect themselves against cyberattacks – with greater complexity comes greater risk of malicious attacks and security exposure.

While there will always be new threats, new attacks and new technologies to keep an eye on, here are some security trends businesses in Asia Pacific ought to watch for this year:


1. Mobile Malware

As security threats continue to dominate news cycles, this year will be one where we see cybercriminals focus on targeting mobile devices by attacking underlying operating systems and releasing more malware-infected apps.

China leads the world in the number of mobile users, and malware on these devices will surface as a huge problem. A study by Tsinghua University, Microsoft Research, and China’s Ministry of Science and Technology found that only a quarter of apps in the country’s local app stores are safe.

The adoption of mobile payment systems will also lead to a surge in hack activity related to stealing information from new payment processing technologies like EMV credit cards, contactless RFID smart cards, and mobile wallets.


2. Online extortion and hacktivism

According to TrendMicro, a Microsoft Partner, rapid growth in online extortion and hacktivism is expected this year, with more sophisticated ways of stealing information and gaining control of webenabled devices being realized.

Malware programs like ransomware, are potentially one of the most dangerous types of computer malware and might be used more frequently by hacktivists in order to encrypt the victim’s personal information like photos or conversations and extort money online to regain control of online accounts and devices


3. Password recovery scams, including spear phishing and smishing

Spear phishing is an e-mail spoofing fraud attempt that targets a specific organization, seeking unauthorized access to confidential data. Spear phishing attempts are not typically initiated by “random hackers” but are more likely to be conducted by perpetrators out for financial gain, trade secrets, or military information.

Since phishing attacks are no longer limited to email, SMS phishing (smishing) is becoming more common, especially by hackers creating password recovery scams. A criminal hacker only needs a victim’s email address and a mobile phone number to start a password recovery process and compromise their account.

A New Approach To Cyber Security

Ultimately, as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, highlighted just last November, the digital world we live in today requires a new approach to how we protect, detect and respond to security threats. Companies must evolve from a simple, “protect and recover” model to a more holistic protect, detect and respond posture that utilizes real-time insights and predictive intelligence across networks to stay ahead of threats.

The current wave of cybersecurity evolution is centered around collecting actionable intelligence, to remain ahead of threats. Attacks such as Ransomware are targeted and follow certain patterns, Malware for example, tends to morph rapidly. To stay ahead of these threats, we need to make full use of the cloud to collect and analyze such information that will tell us what to expect, and where to expect it.

At the same time, it is also critical for companies to strengthen their core security hygiene; adopt modern platforms and comprehensive identity, security and management solutions; and leverage features offered within cloud services. It is just as important to create education and awareness across employee populations in order to build and sustain a pervasive security culture.

While organizations across the region are in various states of readiness with regards to cybersecurity, I remain optimistic as we see more organizations, government and non-governmental companies alike, making cybersecurity a priority and cooperating closely to ensure cyber threats are identified and dealt with quickly.

Premiere Rendering Efficiency with DirectX 12 Asynchronous Compute

Important PC gaming effects like shadowing, lighting, artificial intelligence, physics and lens effects often require multiple stages of computation before determining what is rendered onto the screen by a GPU’s graphics hardware.

In the past, these steps had to happen sequentially. Step by step, the graphics card would follow the API’s process of rendering something from start to finish, and any delay in an early stage would send a ripple of delays through future stages. These delays in the pipeline are called “bubbles,” and they represent a brief moment in time when some hardware in the GPU is paused to wait for instructions.

What sets Radeon GPUs apart from its competitors, however, is the Graphics Core Next architecture’s ability to pull in useful compute work from the game engine to fill these bubbles. For example: if there’s a rendering bubble while rendering complex lighting, Radeon GPUs can fill in the blank with computing the behavior of AI instead. Radeon graphics cards don’t need to follow the step-by-step process of the past or its competitors, and can do this work together—or concurrently—to keep things moving.

Filling these bubbles improves GPU utilization, input latency, efficiency and performance for the user by minimizing or eliminating the ripple of delays that could stall other graphics cards. Only Radeon graphics currently support this crucial capability in DirectX 12 and VR.

Adobe Marketing Cloud Redefines TV Experience

The company also introduced new data science capabilities that enable brands to predict and deliver the right experience on the web, in apps, and at the point of sale at the right moment across any device.

Adobe Cloud Platform

Advancements to the Adobe Cloud Platform include updates to Adobe Exchange, which hosts hundreds of apps and integrations such as Microsoft Dynamics CRM, DemandBase, Acxiom, and BrightEdge, and enable partners to extend the functionality of Adobe Marketing Cloud. The launch of, Adobe’s new developer portal, enables developers to download the Adobe Marketing Cloud software development kit (SDK) and easily access application program interface (API) routines and protocols.

New Adobe Certified Metrics, built on the Adobe Cloud Platform and powered by Adobe Analytics, offer standardized digital census data for more accurate measurement of digital audiences. By leveraging Adobe Certified Metrics, measurement partners, such as comScore, announced today, and Nielsen, can provide a complete view of total audience engagement across TV and digital to increase ad revenue opportunities.

With Adobe data, cable networks, pay-TV service providers and digital publishers can now accurately measure audiences and monetize their content across all screens – including linear TV, DVR, video-on-demand, desktops, smartphones, tablets, game consoles and over-the-top connected devices.


Cross-Device Coop & Mobile

  • Adobe announced the Adobe Marketing Cloud Device Co-op, a network that will enable the world’s biggest brands to work together to better identify consumers as they move from one digital device to another — all while adhering to the highest standards of privacy and transparency. The Co-op will empower participating brands to deliver more personalized consumer experiences across devices and applications at massive scale.
  • Adobe also unveiled a series of innovations in Mobile Marketing. Deeper integration of Adobe Experience Manager Mobile with Apache Cordova helps customers build mobile-app extensions to create richer app experiences. Adobe Experience Manager Mobile simplifies the process of building and managing visually appealing enterprise apps that are as easy to use as consumer apps. Several technology partners also announced today that they are extending their support of Adobe Experience Manager to include mobile.
  • Mobile Core Services now offers tools for brands to optimize the way they interact with users. Adobe’s new deep linking capability within Adobe Marketing Cloud allows brands to send content or promotional offers that will take the customer directly to the appropriate page within the app itself, if it’s installed, eliminating multiple steps and providing a better consumer experience.


New OTT Offering

  • Adobe unveiled new capabilities in Adobe Primetime that extend the solution to OTT platforms and make it easy for TV networks and pay-TV providers to deliver more personalized TV and ad experiences directly to consumers across Apple TV, Microsoft Xbox, Roku and other connected devices. Through the integration with Adobe’s digital marketing solutions, content providers can now acquire, engage and monetize audiences.


Data Science & Sneaks

  • Adobe also announced a series of new data science capabilities including Smart Tags, a TV Recommendation Engine, Automated Insight for Advertising, and email optimizations through Predictive Subject Lines. These capabilities further advance the use of the power of algorithms. The new algorithms simplify the process of extracting insights from billions of data points to help marketers make better business decisions and benefit from recommendations and predictions they didn’t even know existed.
  • Adobe will also be offering several “Sneaks” at Adobe Summit — previews of groundbreaking ideas and technologies percolating inside Adobe labs. AceDeceiver : First iOS Trojan Exploits Apple DRM Design

Palo Alto Networks discovered a new family of iOS malware that successfully infected non-jailbroken devices. They’ve named it “AceDeceiver”.

What makes AceDeceiver different from previous iOS malware is that instead of abusing enterprise certificates as some iOS malware has over the past two years, AceDeceiver manages to install itself without any enterprise certificate at all. It does so by exploiting design flaws in Apple’s DRM mechanism, and even as Apple has removed AceDeceiver from App Store, it may still spread thanks to a novel attack vector.

AceDeceiver is the first iOS malware they’ve seen that abuses certain design flaws in Apple’s DRM protection mechanism — namely FairPlay — to install malicious apps on iOS devices regardless of whether they are jailbroken. This technique is called “FairPlay Man-In-The-Middle (MITM)” and has been used since 2013 to spread pirated iOS apps, but this is the first time they’ve seen it used to spread malware.

Note : The FairPlay MITM attack technique was also presented at the USENIX Security Symposium in 2014; however, attacks using this technique are still occurring successfully.


AceDeceiver Sneaks Into App Store

Three different iOS apps in the AceDeceiver family were uploaded to the official App Store between July 2015 and February 2016, and all of them claimed to be wallpaper apps.

These apps successfully bypassed Apple’s code review at least seven times (including the first time each was uploaded and then four rounds of code updates, which require an additional review by Apple for each instance) using a method similar to that used by ZergHelper, where the app tailors its behavior based on the physical geographic region in which it’s being executed.

In this case, AceDeceiver only displays malicious behaviors when a user is located in China, but that would be easy for the attacker to change in any time.

Apple removed these three apps from the App Store after we reported them in late February 2016. However, the attack is still viable because the FairPlay MITM attack only requires these apps to have been available in the App Store once. As long as an attacker could get a copy of authorization from Apple, the attack doesn’t require current App Store availability to spread those apps.


How AceDeceiver Works

To carry out the attack, the author created a Windows client called ”爱思助手 (Aisi Helper)” to perform the FairPlay MITM attack. Aisi Helper purports to be software that provides services for iOS devices such as system re-installation, jailbreaking, system backup, device management and system cleaning.

But what it’s also doing is surreptitiously installing the malicious apps on any iOS device that is connected to the PC on which Aisi Helper is installed. (Of note, only the most recent app is installed on the iOS device(s) at the time of infection, not all three at the same time.) These malicious iOS apps provide a connection to a third party app store controlled by the author for user to download iOS apps or games.

It encourages users to input their Apple IDs and passwords for more features, and provided these credentials will be uploaded to AceDeceiver’s C2 server after being encrypted. We also identified some earlier versions of AceDeceiver that had enterprise certificates dated March 2015.

Sharkoon expands its range of docking stations and introduces the fastest QuickPort to the product family, which thanks to USB 3.1, offers a data transfer rate of up to 10 gigabits per second.

The Sharkoon QuickPort USB 3.1 Type C is a compact docking station for convenient connection of a SATA hard drive to a PC or laptop. With USB 3.1 support, the QuickPort offers a transfer rate of up to 10 gigabits per second and is backwards compatible to USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. The docking station is suitable for a 2.5″ HDD/SSD or a 3.5″ hard drive, which slides easily into the drive bay of the QuickPort.

Installation is also simple; your operating system recognizes the QuickPort without having to install a driver. If there is no hard drive inserted, a spring-loaded flap protects the inside against dust and dirt. The internal SATA interface of the docking station supports SATA Revision 3.0 and is backwards compatible to previous SATA Revisions.

The on/off switch is located on the back, along with the power inlet and USB the USB 3.1 Type C port for connecting to a computer. A USB 3.1 cable (Type A plug to Type C plug) and a power adapter is included, as well.

Fittingly, Sharkoon also introduces a new expansion card: The Sharkoon USB 3.1 Host Controller Card Type A+C conveniently expands a PC with two USB 3.1 ports. Here, both a Type A port and Type C port are available. Each port provides a transfer rate of up to 10 gigabits per second.

The PCIe expansion card supports PCIe 2.0 x2 as well as PCIe 3.0 x1 and is backwards compatible to USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. An internal SATA power inlet provides the necessary power supply. Windows 7, 8 and 10 operating systems are supported.

Trend Micro : Next Gen Payment Technologies

18 March 2016 – Since the boom of e-commerce, credit cards have been the target of many cybercriminals who have designed many malware and phishing schemes to steal banking credentials. The numerous threats that have preyed on the traditional credit card payment system, coupled with new technology, has led to the development of different payment processing technologies that not only allow for more convenient transactions, but also ones that are more secured.

Trend Micro Incorporated released its annual security roundup report, “Setting the Stage: Landscape Shifts Dictate Future Threat Response Strategies,” which dissects the most significant security incidents from 2015. Mobile devices continued being hotbeds for cybercriminals looking to exploit security flaws.

Mobile payments may be convenient for people armed with smartphones that support it, especially right now with the arrival of Visa Checkout in Malaysia that allows you to pay easily on across all your devices but the problem with using popular technology is that threats are always sure to follow, the same way they did with cloud computing and the Android platform.

SEGA and Warner Games Now Available On GeForce NOW

Two more top game publishers will be streaming their titles on NVIDIA SHIELD with GeForce NOW, bringing the total number of PC games available to stream on our Android TV device to 100.

SEGA and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment will add a combined nine hit titles to the GeForce NOW service in the coming weeks. NVIDIA announced the additions at the Game Developers Conference, in San Francisco. Square Enix added games to the service just last month.

GeForce NOW is the world’s most powerful game-streaming service. It features cloud access to GeForce GPUs and a click-to-play time of less than 30 seconds – 100x faster than waiting for traditional digital downloads. It’s

New Huntkey Products @ Global Sources Electronics Show

Shenzhen, China, March 16th, 2016 – Huntkey Enterprise Group will showcase its latest technologies at the upcoming Global Sources Electronics, April 11-14, in Hong Kong.

The shutters can be opened only when both the Live Wire hole and the Null Wire hole are inserted simultaneously. That is to say, when somebody accidentally inserts a finger into a pin hole, the socket will not be energized, therefore protecting users, especially children, from the danger of electric shock.

The new SZL series are universal standard power strips, composed of 2 models – SZL307 and SZL407, both with 2 USB charging ports, surge protection and child protection.

New Razer Blade Gaming Laptop Launched

IRVINE, Calif. – Razer, a world leader in connected devices and software for gamers, today announced its new Razer Blade gaming laptop. The Blade’s specs have been improved across the board from its predecessor, and it is now more affordable than ever before.

The new Razer Blade houses the latest 6th generation Intel Core i7 quad-core processor and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M GPU with 6 GB of VRAM. PCIe SSD technology offers up to three times faster speeds than traditional solid-state drives. Killer Wireless-AC is included. All models will feature 16 GB of DDR4 dual-channel RAM.

Steam Stealer Targets Thousands Of Gamer Accounts

15 March 2016 – In an industry worth over an estimated hundred billion US dollars, gaming is not just big business for developers and manufacturers, but for cybercriminals too. Steam Stealer is a constantly evolving breed of malware that is responsible for hijacking the user accounts of the popular gaming platform, Steam.

The malware’s goal is to steal online gaming items and user account credentials, and then resell them on the black market. It is distributed to cybercriminals under a malware-as-a-service business model with an extremely low entry price of up to $30 USD.

Steam is one of the most popular entertainment multi-OS distribution platforms. Owned by Valve, it has over 100 million registered users and several thousand games available for download worldwide. Its popularity makes it a large and attractive target for fraudster groups, who can sell Steam user credentials for $15 USD on the black market. According to recently published official Steam data, 77,000 Steam accounts are hijacked and pillaged every month.

According to Kaspersky Lab researcher Santiago Pontiroli and his independent research colleague Bart P., a new breed of malware known as Steam Stealer is the prime suspect in the pilfering of numerous user accounts from Valve’s flagship platform. The duo believes the malware was originally developed by Russian-speaking cybercriminals; they have found many language traces in several underground malware forums to suggest this.
Steam Stealer works in a malware-as-a-service business model: it is available for sale in different versions, with distinct features, free upgrades, user manuals, custom advice for distribution, and more.

When it comes to these types of malicious campaigns the usual starting price for “solutions” is in the range of $500 USD. However, Steam Stealers have a ludicrously low price, being commonly sold for no more than $30 USD. This makes the malware highly attractive for wannabe cybercriminals all around the world.

The propagation of Steam Stealers is mainly, but not solely, done either via fake cloned websites distributing the malware, or through a social engineering approach, where the victim is targeted with direct messages.
Once the malware is in the user’s system it steals the entire set of Steam configuration files. Once this is done it locates the specific Steam KeyValue file that contains user credentials, as well as the information that maintains a user’s session. When cybercriminals have obtained this information, they can control the user’s account.

Stealing gamer accounts was once a resource-light way for script kiddies to make a quick profit, by selling them on underground forums. Now however, criminals have realized the true market value of these accounts. The opportunities now lie in stealing and selling user gaming items that may be worth thousands of dollars. Organized cybercriminals simply don’t want to leave that money on the table.

[adrotate banner=”4″]Kaspersky Lab experts have discovered nearly 1200 samples of different Steam Stealer maleware that have been attacking tens of thousands of users around the world, especially in Russia and other Eastern European countries, where Steam’s platform is extremely popular.

There has been a clear evolution in the techniques used for infection and propagation, as well as the growing complexity of the malware itself, which has led to an increase in this type of activity. With gaming consoles adding more powerful components and the Internet of Things on our doorstep, this scenario looks like one that will continue to play out and become more complex. At Kaspersky Lab, we hope that our research will develop into an ongoing investigation, bringing a much-needed balance to the gaming ecosystem. Security should not be something developers think about afterwards but at an early stage of the game development process. Kaspersky Lab products detects Steam Stealer trojan groups as : Trojan.Downloader.Msil.Steamilik; Trojan.Msil.Steamilik; Trojan-psw.Msil.Steam amongst others. Targets of these trojans are largely spread around the globe with Russia, the US, Europe (France and Germany), India and Brazil, leading the way.
