Sony just directly took on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, with their Xperia 1 smartphone that is still weeks away from being launched.
Challenging Samsung is nothing new. But challenging the Note 10+ with a multimedia-heavy device that has fewer features, at the same price point – that takes some balls.
Sony Throws Down The Xperia 1 Gauntlet
On the very same day Samsung kicked off retail sales of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, Sony announced a pre-order for their upcoming Xperia 1 flagship smartphone.
And here’s the kicker – they are offering it at the same price as the Galaxy Note 10+ (256 GB), while arguably offering a less-impressive feature set.
Sony Xperia 1’s Key Selling Points
Of course, the Sony Xperia 1 has a few key features that they are touting against the Galaxy Note 10+.
- 21:9 CinemaWide display, with 1644 x 3840 pixels
- X1 mobile HDR remastering technology
- 100% DCI-P3 colour space with Creator display mode
- BIONZ X image processing engine with Eye AF
This makes the Sony Xperia 1 a multimedia powerhouse – great for those who want to enjoy a cinematic experience watching movies and videos.

Of course, we have yet to test the Xperia 1 ourselves, but in a pure spec shoot-out, it is completely outclassed by the Galaxy Note 10+ (256 GB).

Sony Xperia 1 Price + Availability
Sony is making the Xperia 1 available in three colours – Black, Purple and Grey, with a recommended retail price of RM 4,299 / ~US$1,029 / ~£839 / ~A$1,519.
Sony will start showing it off on 30 August, but retail sales will only begin weeks later on 8 October 2019.
Sony Xperia 1 Pre-Order Promotion
To drum up interest between now and 8 October, Sony is opening up pre-orders from 24 August until 6 October 2019.
If you book an Xperia 1 smartphone during the 6+ weeks pre-order period, you will receive a FREE pair of black Sony WH-1000XM3 wireless noise-cancelling headphones.
The pre-order page went down for more than half a day, but it’s up and running now!
