The new HUAWEI P40 Pro smartphone promises Visionary Photography, thanks to its 50MP Leica quad camera system!

We got our hands on the Deep Sea Blue model, and here is our hands-on preview of HUAWEI’s latest photography-centric smartphone!

 

HUAWEI P40 Pro : Hands-On Experience!

The HUAWEI P40 Pro is the middle brother of the new P40 family of smartphones, and is only available as 5G variants. It has a 6.58-inch OLED display, with a resolution of 1200 x 2640 pixels, and a 90 Hz refresh rate.

The only buttons you will find on the HUAWEI P40 Pro are the Power and Volume control buttons on the right side.

The SIM and NM hybrid tray is located at the bottom, next to the USB Type C data and charging port.

At the top, you will find a second microphone (for noise cancellation), next to the infra-red emitter (which enables its Smart Remote feature).

New 5G Mobile Platform

The HUAWEI P40 Pro uses the new Kirin 990 5G mobile SoC, with a triple-tier architecture :

  • two ARM Cortex-A76 high-performance cores at 2.86 GHz
  • two ARM Cortex-A76 sustained performance cores at 2.36 GHz
  • four ARM Cortex-A55 low-power cores at 1.95 GHz

It also comes with a powerful 16-core ARM Mali-G76 GPU, and a new Da Vinci neural architecture with 2 big NPUs and 1 small NPU.

Improved Cooling

Keeping the Kirin 990 5G cool is a new SuperCool system of 3D graphene film paired with ultra-thin VC to efficiently conduct heat away.

It comes only in 5G variants, powered by the Kirin 990 5G. HUAWEI will offer it with 8 GB of memory, and storage options of 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB.

Dual Front Cameras

The HUAWEI P40 Pro comes with a 32 MP front camera, which is paired with an IR depth camera. The depth camera does not take any photos but helps the 32 MP front camera add accurate software bokeh effects.

Ultra Vision Leica Quad Camera System

The HUAWEI P40 Pro’s marquee feature is its rear Leica quad-camera system, which consists of :

  • RYYB colour filter array, with 4-in-1 pixel binning capability
  • Octa Photodiode Autofocus
  • f/1.9 aperture with OIS support

  • 1/1.54-inch sensor with RYYB colour filter array
  • f/1.8 aperture
  • Supports ultra low-light and ultra slow-motion video

12 MP SuperZoom Telephoto Camera

3D Depth Sensing Camera

  • real-time depth detection for accurate bokeh effects

Large, Fast-Charging Battery

Powering all that is a large 4,200 mAh battery, which supports 40 watt HUAWEI SuperCharge wired charging, and 27 watt HUAWEI SuperCharge wireless charging.

HUAWEI P40 Pro : Price + Availability

The HUAWEI P40 Pro is available in selected markets, with a recommended retail price of €999 / RM 3,899 / ~US$1,089 / £899.99 / ~A$1,699 / S$1,448 for the 8GB+256GB variant.

HUAWEI will offer five colour options – Black, Deep Sea Blue, Ice White, Silver Frost and Blush Gold globally, although colour options will be limited in most countries.
