The Leaked HUAWEI Mate 20 Photos + Details

After overtaking Apple, HUAWEI is aiming its sights at Samsung. It is a steep mountain to climb, with a huge gap in their sales, and the overwhelming popularity of the Samsung Galaxy Note9, but they’re hoping that the upcoming HUAWEI Mate 20 will help them gain on Samsung.

XDA Developers managed to get their hands on actual leaked photos of the HUAWEI Mate 20. To protect their sources, they recreated it in the form of 3D renders. Here is what we know about the HUAWEI Mate 20, based on their renders, and other sources.

Water Drop Notch

The HUAWEI Mate 20 will feature a tiny water drop notch, just enough to house its front camera. Just above the notch is a small speaker port.

6.3-inch AMOLED Display

The HUAWEI Mate 20 will have a larger 6.3-inch display with an AMOLED panel, which will give it brighter and more vivid colours. However, it will feature a reduced display resolution of 1080 x 2244 pixels, and a lower pixel density.

HiSilicon Kirin 980 Updated!

The HUAWEI Mate 20 will be built around the new HiSilicon Kirin 980 platform, and run on Android Pie.

It will have two ARM Cortex-A76 high-performance cores running at 2.6 GHz, two additional ARM Cortex-A76 cores running at 1.92 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores running at 1.8 GHz for background or less-intensive workloads.

It will also have a 24-core ARM Mali-G76 GPU and two NPUs, which should double both its graphics and AI performance. On top of that, it will support LTE Cat. 21 download speeds of up to 1.6 Gbps, as well as dual frequency GPS (L5 + L1) for 10X more accurate positioning.

3.5 mm Audio Port

If you still use the 3.5 mm audio port (we do!), you will be glad to know that the HUAWEI Mate 20 will still retain it, and it will be located at the top.

Triple Camera System

The HUAWEI Mate 20 will feature a triple camera system, probably the same as that of the HUAWEI P20 Pro (Price Check), albeit in a cubic arrangement with the flash.

If so, it will feature a dual-lens camera that pairs a 40 MP RGB camera with f/1.8 lens, with a 20 MP monochrome camera with f/1.6 lens. The separate 8 MP RGB camera with f/2.4 telephotos lens is capable of 3X optical zoom, and 5X hybrid zoom.

Bigger Battery + Wireless Charging

The HUAWEI Mate 20 will come with a bigger 4,200 mAh lithium-ion polymer battery, which should give it better battery life. It will also have a glass back, in order to support wireless charging.

Graphene Cooling Technology New!

Thanks to a Weibo post leak of a  HUAWEI R&D presentation, we believe the HUAWEI Mate 20 will make use of graphene cooling technology to keep the Kirin 980 cool even in the most strenuous gaming sessions.

Graphene is a very thin layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. It allows heat to be rapidly absorbed and transferred away from a hot spot.

Underwater Mode + AI Camera + AI Zoom + Video Bokeh

Thanks to the intrepid XDA Developers, we now know that the HUAWEI Mate 20 will have a bunch of new camera features like Underwater Mode, AI Cinema, AI Zoom and Video Bokeh :

  • Underwater Mode : The Mate 20 is IP67-rated, but HUAWEI does not want you to actually use it underwater. Instead, they expect you to use a case or pouch, and created an Underwater Mode to help you “take clear shots in underwater environments” :
Volume Down : Take a photo
Volume Up : Shoot a video
Power : Turn the camera on or off

  • AI Cinema : This is courtesy of the HiSilicon Kirin 980 with its dual NPUs delivering real-time object recognition in videos. It basically applies certain filters to your video recording in real time. The available filters are AI Colour, Background Blur, Fresh, Vintage and Suspense.

  • AI Zoom : This feature enables the Mate 20 camera to automatically zoom in or out to keep your subject centered. This is probably used while recording a video in which you are zoomed in on a subject that is walking out of the scene.
  • Video Bokeh : It appears that the Mate 20 will be able to identify the background of your video recording in real time, and apply software bokeh effects.
