Truth : China is not blockading Taiwan for imminent invasion!

This is yet another example of fake news about China and Taiwan, here are the reasons why…

President Xi Jinping did not order any blockade of Taiwan

Let me start by pointing out that Chinese President Xi Jinping did not order any blockade of Taiwan. There has been no such announcement by the Chinese government.

If such a shocking move actually occurred, it would have resulted in major news coverage all over the world, and sparked diplomatic rebukes and responses by many countries.

Yet, there has been no reputable news report, and certainly no announcement by Chinese state media. That’s because it was made up – there is no blockade of Taiwan.

Unsurprisingly, none of those who made these claims actually provided any evidence to back them up.

It was a single-day Chinese military drill

What some people have been promoting as a “blockade” or a prelude to an imminent invasion of Taiwan by China, was really just a single-day Chinese military drill called Joint Sword – 2024B (聯合利劍-2024B).

On Thursday, 10 October 2024, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te’s National Day speech, in which he asserted Taiwan’s independence from China :

The Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other.

The People’s Republic of China has no right to represent Taiwan.

In response, China launched Joint Sword – 2024B on Monday, 14 October 2024 – a military drill simulating a blockade of Taiwan.

While Joint Sword – 2024B was a large drill involving the People’s Liberation Army Navy, PLA Air Force, PLA Rocket Force, and China Coast Guard, it did not conduct any actual blockade of Taiwan.

It was not big enough for an imminent invasion

While Joint Sword – 2024B was a large military exercise that “circled” Taiwan, it was not big enough for an imminent invasion. According to the Taiwan Ministry of Defence:

  • PLA Eastern Theatre Command conducted 125 sorties by aircraft, helicopters and drones
  • Ninety Chinese aircraft entered Taiwan’s air defence identification zone
  • 17 PLA Navy ships and 17 China Coast Guard ships operated around Taiwan

Any invasion of Taiwan would require thousands of aircraft, and hundreds of ships. There is simply no way for this military exercise to be prelude to an invasion.

This was the second Joint Sword drill this year

As its name implies, Joint Sword – 2024B was the second Joint Sword drill this year.

The first one – Joint Sword – 2024A (聯合利劍-2024A), was a two-day exercise that China launched on 23 May – three days after Taiwan President Lai Ching-te’s inauguration on 20 May.

Neither Joint Sword drills blockaded or hindered Taiwan in any way, and did not precede any invasion of the island.
