Claim : Timah Whiskey Brand Sold + Moving To China!
This message has gone viral on WhatsApp and Facebook, with people sharing it as evidence of the dysfunctional government in Malaysia shooting itself in its own foot… again.
Breaking News!
TIMAH sold to China and the whole factory will be shifting to China. And the China businessman is locating the factory in a 100 acres land!

Truth : Timah Whiskey Brand NOT Sold / Moving To China!
The Timah whiskey brand has recently been under attack over its name in Malaysia, and it’s really bad for business confidence in Malaysia.
And while the viral message has a point about the Malaysian government’s holier than thou attitude, it is still FAKE NEWS!
And here are the reasons why…
Fact #1 : Winepak Still Owns Timah Whiskey Brand
The Timah whiskey brand has NOT been sold to any company in China, and is still owned by the Winepak Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd.
Fact #2 : Winepak Is Considering A Name + Image Change
On 28 October 2021, the Malaysia Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi announced that Winepak requested a week to discuss with their shareholders and board of directors on changing the name and image of their Timah whiskey.
Winepak would not need to do this if they actually sold the brand to a Chinese company.
Fact #3 : Moving To China Won’t Change Things
Winepak has also not announced any plan to move its factory to China, and there is no evidence any Chinese businessman will be allocating 100 acres of land for such a factory.
In any case, moving its factory to China will not change things, the Malaysian government is insisting that they change their name and image.
Even if they move the factory to China, they would still have to change the whiskey’s name and image.
Fact #4 : Timah Whiskey Production Does Not Require 100 Acres Of Land
According to Malt Review, Winepak blends the two imported peated malts, with a locally-distilled neutral cane spirit made from molasses, and ages the blend for at least three years to produce this whiskey.
In other words, Timah can be produced in a small facility, and does not require 100 acres (4.35 million square feet) of land, which is enough to build 15 to 20 condominiums!
