Fact Check : Empty Hospitals Prove COVID-19 Is Fake?

People are sharing #FilmYourHospital photos and videos of empty hospitals as evidence that COVID-19 doesn’t really exist, or that it’s overly hyped.

Find out if it’s true that hospitals are empty, and if that means that COVID-19 is a fake crisis!

 

#FilmYourHospital : Are Hospitals Empty?

On Twitter and YouTube, people are sharing videos and pictures of what appears to be empty (or nearly empty) hospital parking lots, entrances and waiting areas with the hashtag #FilmYourHospital.

They are also sharing stories of how healthcare workers are being furloughed or laid off, which would not make sense if there are so many people sick with COVID-19.


This appears to be an almost exclusively American obsession. Practically every post we have seen so far are of American hospitals, with their posters claiming that their videos and photos prove that COVID-19 crisis is a hoax.

Some are calling for the arrest of Dr. Anthony Fauci (#ArrestFauci) and bizarrely, Bill Gates (#ArrestGates), while others want to do away with the lockdown / 5G towers (take your pick).

 

Fact Check : Empty Hospitals Prove COVID-19 Is Fake?

Okay, let’s take a look at the facts and see how they line up with what have been posted so far…

Some Hospitals Are Empty : True

It is true that some hospitals are empty, or in the process of being emptied. But this is simply part of their preparations for an expected influx of COVID-19 patients.

COVID-19 is highly-infectious, and thus, COVID-19 patients cannot be kept in the same ward as other patients. They need to be isolated from other patients.

Therefore, hospitals need to clear out dedicated floors or wards to cater to COVID-19 patients, when they are admitted.

Healthcare Workers Are Being Laid Off : True

It is also true that healthcare workers are being fired or furloughed (placed on leave of absence). This is because hospitals have cancelled or delayed elective surgeries and procedures, greatly reducing their income.

As hospitals in the US are profit-based, the loss of income from these procedures mean they need to quickly furlough or fire employees who are not directly involved in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

The Washington Post had earlier reported that hospitals were firing or furloughing staff :

  • Bon Secours Mercy Health (51 hospitals) furloughed 700 workers
  • Ballad Health (21 hospitals) furloughed 1300 employees, and cut pay for executives.
  • Children’s National Hospital in DC forced employees to take one week off.

Hospital executives also claim that these furloughs will reduce the number of people in their hospitals and help to reduce the spread.

Hospital Parking Lots Are Empty : True

Videos and photos of empty hospital parking lots are merely evidence that hospitals are doing their part to stop the spread of COVID-19 by :

  • cancelling or delaying non-critical surgeries and procedures
  • discouraging people (including visitors) from coming to hospitals

We need to remember that COVID-19 is highly-infectious, and can spread through people who look perfectly healthy. Hence, no one should be near or inside a hospital, unless they are sick and need medical attention.

One of the videos even shows a security officer asking a conspiracy theorist to leave. To idea isn’t to prevent people from taking photos or videos of an empty parking lot. It’s to enforce social distancing rules and prevent people from getting infected.

Some Hospital Tents Are Empty : True

It is also true that tents outside of some hospitals are empty. That’s because they are being used for triage, not a buffet.

People coming to hospitals will be assessed at these triage tents, and then moved inside to either a hot / red zone (if they are deemed to have COVID-19 symptoms), or a safe / green zone (if they have non-COVID medical issues).

But in most cases, these tents are fully covered up for privacy, so there’s no way to know how many people are inside.

The large size of these tents may also lead people to expect a veritable queue of sick people. Large tents are necessary to ensure that every person is seated at least six feet (2 meters) apart.

Many states also have stay-at-home or shelter-in-place lockdown orders. So smart people who do not want to get infected by COVID-19, will stay at home and not go to the hospital unless they really need urgent medical attention.

Hospital Waiting Rooms Are Empty : True

Yes, it is also true that hospital waiting rooms are empty, but not because there are no COVID-19 patients.

Because COVID-19 is highly-infectious, hospitals will NEVER leave patients who are potentially infected (and therefore contagious) to sit in a general waiting room. They will be isolated in a separate section of the hospital.

Conspiracy theorists who fake injuries to get into a hospital will be shunted to the usual common waiting room instead.

And this common waiting room will be empty, partly because elective surgeries and procedures have been cancelled or delayed, and partly because lockdown orders mean that people are staying home.

Hospitals Do NOT Allow Photos / Videos To Be Taken : True

Privacy laws, including HIPAA in the United States, require hospital staff to stop members of the public from taking photos or videos of patients.

Such laws actually apply to the hospital staff as well, not just members of the public. NO ONE has the right to take photos or videos of a patient without his/her consent.

 

Empty Hospitals Do NOT Prove COVID-19 Is Fake : Conclusion

Now, everything people have posted so far are true – there are empty parking lots and waiting rooms in hospitals. But that doesn’t mean that healthcare workers or authorities have been lying about being overwhelmed by COVID-19.

COVID-19 is a PANDEMIC, which means it has spread globally. For this to be a conspiracy, it would require herculean coordination amongst the 210 countries currently affected by COVID-19.

Hundreds of thousands of people would have to conspire to lie to the entire world, and for what? To deprive you of your freedom? To build more 5G towers? To force you to get vaccinated?

Think about that for a moment. And if you still believe that COVID-19 is a lie and a conspiracy, please make that decision for yourself. Suicide is meant to be a solitary hobby.

Oh, one more thing. Some people who are fanning this #FilmYourHospital hype are doing it for the money. One YouTuber said it clearly in a comment “The motive here is to get my videos promoted, get more subscribers and make a little extra cash…”
