Claim : UNRWA adds black stripe to mourn death of Yahya Sinwar
Right after news broke that Yahya Sinwar – the leader of Hamas, was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, some people claimed or suggested that UNRWA added a black stripe to its social media profiles to mourn his death!
Leslie Kajamovitz : UNRWA appears to be mourning the death of Yahya Sinwar. All UNRWA accounts added a black stripe to their profile.

Truth : UNRWA added black stripe to mourn deaths in Gaza
Let’s take a look at the UNRWA black stripe, and find out what the facts really are!
UNRWA added black stripe as early as 22 October 2023
Let me just start by pointing out that the black stripe on UNRWA profiles is genuine, but isn’t new. UNRWA added that black stripe, as early as 22 October 2023:

- June 2024 archived screenshot
- February 2024 archived screenshot
- December 2023 archived screenshot
- November 2023 archived screenshot
- October 2023 archived screenshot
As those screenshots show, UNRWA added that black stripe almost a full year before Yahya Sinwar’s death on 16 October 2024, thus proving the poster below false.
Unsurprisingly, people posting or sharing this misleading poster did not provide any evidence to back up this claim.

UNRWA likely added black stripe mourn death of colleagues in Gaza
While UNRWA did not officially mention why it added the black stripe in October 2023, it appears to coincide with its 22 October 2023 announcement that 29 UNRWA employees have been killed in Gaza since Israel started bombing the Palestinian territory in the aftermath of the October 7 attack.
We are in shock and mourning.
It is now confirmed that 29 of our colleagues in📍#Gaza have been killed since October 7.
Half of these colleagues were @unrwa
teachers.
As an Agency, we are devastated. We are grieving with each other and with the families.
In that 22 October 2023 post, you can see that the UNRWA logo has a black stripe. That appears to be the first known screenshot showing the UNRWA logo with a black stripe.
In short, the black stripe over the UNRWA logos has nothing to do with Yahya Sinwar’s death on 16 October 2024, and was most likely added to mourn the death of UNRWA employees in Gaza, and possibly left on to mourn the carnage and destruction in the wake of Israel’s invasion of Gaza.
