Claim : Joe Biden Failed To Recognise UK PM Rishi Sunak

People are sharing videos on WhatsApp, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, which claim to show Joe Biden failing to recognise United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and even pushing him aside to greet King Charles’ representative instead.

@Spriter99880 : Arriving in Belfast, the Biden did not recognize the Prime Minister of Great Britain and pushed the “boy” away to salute the gray-haired military man.

Truth : Joe Biden Recognised UK PM Rishi Sunak, Did Not Push Him Aside!

This is yet another example of FAKE NEWS created and propagated by right wing activists, and here are the reasons why…

Fact #1 : Viral Videos Were Edited

The viral videos were edited from the original footage, intentionally removing the segment which shows President Joe Biden greeting and shaking Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s hand.

White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates confirmed it on April 13, telling AFP:

The footage was dishonestly manipulated.

Fact #2 : Joe Biden Greeted + Spoke With Rishi Sunak

In the original video, US President Joe Biden is seen greeting and shaking UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and exchanging words for a few seconds before saluting Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim, David McCorkell, King Charles III’s representative in Northern Ireland.

After greeting other people, Biden laid his hand on Sunak’s back, before going on to greet even more people. Biden later resumed his conversation with Rishi Sunak and David McCorkell on the tarmac for a minute or two, before The Beast (the US armoured Presidential limousine) arrived.

Fact #3 : Joe Biden Met Rishi Sunak A Month Ago!

It is quite impossible for Joe Biden not to recognise Rishi Sunak, because they met and spoke with each other on several occasions, the most recent being a month ago!

On March 13, Rishi Sunak and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined Joe Biden at San Diego to mark the AUKUS deal. Sunak and Biden not only had a bilateral meeting, they also held a press conference together, in which he spoke of Sunak in familiar terms.

First of all, I want to welcome him back to California.  He’s a Stanford man, and he still has a home here in California.  That’s why I’m being very nice to him, maybe he’ll invite me to his home here in California. 

In fact, Joe Biden first met Rishi Sunak in November 2022, during the G20 summit. During their first bilateral meeting on 16 November 2022, President Biden congratulated Rishi Sunak for becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
