Claim : China snubbed Annalena Baerbock on her official visit!

People are claiming or suggesting that Chinese officials refused to greet Annalena Baerbock when the German Foreign Minister landed in China for her official visit!

WION : German Foreign Minister receives no welcome in China. Watch what happened

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock found herself in a confused situation when she landed in China when no one received her at the airport. A video of the incident has been circulating on social media leaving netizens in splits.

In the video, Annalena Baerbock could be seen descending from the boarding stairs of the aeroplane alone, after her flight landed in China. She looks around and appears confused when she realises that no Chinese officials are there to receive her. The footage has been shared multiple times on X and has already gained thousands of views.

Truth : China did not snub Annalena Baerbock on her official visit!

This is yet another example of fake news about Germany and China, and here are the reasons why…

Video was recorded in January 2024

Let me start by pointing out that viral video is genuine, but was not recorded in October 2024. It was recorded on 12 January 2024.

Video was recorded in Malaysia

The video also does not show Annalena Baerbock landing in China. The video shows German Foreign Minister arriving in Kuala Lumpur, on her official visit to Malaysia.

Her plane landed in a different part of the airport

It is true that Annalena Baerbock was not received when she stepped off her plane. However, that only happened because her plane was unexpectedly asked to land at a different part of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The welcoming delegation from the Malaysian government was at a different part of the airport when she stepped off her plane, and she was taken to them instead. Understandably, that’s easier than waiting for the welcoming delegation to shift everything to the new location.

German Foreign Office confirmed the false claim

German journalist, Florian Warweg, asked the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswaertiges Amt) about the viral video, and confirmed that the video shows Annalena Baerbock landing in Malaysia, not China. Here is the English translation of his post:

There is currently a video circulating on X & Co which is supposed to show @ABaerbock arriving in China/India. She goes down the stairs and looks around in surprise, as there is no reception committee to be seen anywhere. I asked @AuswaertigesAmt about this.

Answer: Video shows #Baerbock on arrival in Malaysia. 🇩🇪 Government aircraft had to unexpectedly land in another part of the airport, so the welcoming delegation stood a few meters further away.

Statement sounds understandable, so be careful with the context when sharing this clip 😉

Unfortunately, it appears that some Indian media outlets posted about those unverified claims without first verifying the facts.

Annalena Baerbock does not appear to have visited China in October

In early October, it was reported that Annalena Baerbock would visit China “in the coming days”. The trip was supposed to have been planned for October. However, there has been no announcement by either country on the visit, so it is possible that her trip might have been postponed.
