Malaysia Police Denies Running Political Troll Farm!

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) denies running a troll farm to corrupt or manipulate public discourse!

Here is what you need to know!

Meta Accuses Malaysia Police Of Running Political Troll Farm!

On 4 August 2022, Meta directly named the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) as being responsible for a troll farm designed to “corrupt or manipulate public discourse“.

Here were the key findings that the Meta team revealed about the individuals behind the PDRM troll farm :

  • They were active on Facebook, TikTok, Twitter and Instagram.
  • They posted memes in Malay, in support of the current government coalition
  • They posted claims of corruption amongst the current government coalition’s critics
  • They created Facebook Pages that posed as independent news entities, and promoted police while criticising the opposition.
  • Their posting activity were greatest during weekdays, taking breaks for lunch.
  • Their fake accounts were under-developed, and some of them used stolen profile photos.

The troll farm was initially suspected to have originated in China by researchers at Clemson University in South Caroline. But when the Meta team investigated it, they found links to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

The Meta team also revealed that the PDRM troll farm spent about $6,000 (~RM26,750) in Facebook and Instagram ads, paid for primarily in Malaysian Ringgit.

They also shared how successful the PDRM troll farm was in garnering followers on Facebook and Instagram :

  • Facebook Pages : About 427,000 accounts
  • Facebook Groups : About 4,000 accounts
  • Instagram Accounts : About 15,000 accounts

As a result of their investigation, Meta removed 595 Facebook accounts, 180 Pages, 11 Groups and 72 Instagram accounts that were linked to this PDRM troll farm, for violating their police against “coordinated inauthentic behavior“.

What Is Inauthentic Behavior?

Inauthentic behaviour (IB) as an effort to mislead people or Facebook about about the popularity of content, the purpose of a community (i.e. Groups, Pages, Events) or the identity of the people behind it. It is primarily centered around amplifying and increasing the distribution of content, and is often (but not exclusively) financially motivated.

IB operators typically focus on quantity rather than the quality of engagement. For example, they may use large numbers of low-sophistication fake accounts to mass-post or like their content — be it commercial, social or political. They often use tactics similar to other large-scale online activities, like spam.

This behavior pattern distinguishes IB from Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior (CIB) where operators invest in mimicking human social activity as closely as possible.

PDRM Denies Meta Accusations Of Running Political Troll Farm!

On 6 August 2022, PDRM issued a short notice (with my English translation) stating that it takes Meta’s allegations seriously, denies them, and is currently gathering information about those allegations.

Penafian PDRM Atas Dakwaan Syarikat Meta Platforms Incorporated

PDRM Denies Allegations By Meta Platforms Incorporated

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is taking seriously the report by Meta Platforms Incorporated which claimed that there are fake social media account “with ties to PDRM”.

PDRM denies these allegations and is gathering more information about it.

PDRM Troll Farm : Is That Even Legal?!

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) enforces the laws of the country, including the Internet. In fact, they have a Cyber & Multimedia Criminal Investigation Unit under the Commercial Crime Investigation Department.

The PDRM works together with the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) to tackle cybersecurity threats, and these would include malicious influence campaigns.

All the more reason why it is both perplexing and troubling that Malaysia’s national police force has been linked to a troll farm designed to promote the current government coalition, while denigrating the opposition.

These are specifically the cybercrimes that NACSA should be looking out for, and the PDRM should be assisting them in arresting anyone in Malaysia who participated in such activities.

The PDRM will no doubt be under tremendous pressure to explain / refute Meta’s allegations.

China Bans Taiwan Food Over Pelosi, But Not Chips!

China just banned food imports over 100 Taiwanese companies right before US Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan, but unsurprisingly not microchips!

Here is what you need to know…

China Bans Taiwan Food Products Over Pelosi!

While US Speaker Nancy Pelosi was flying to Taiwan from Malaysia, the General Administration of Customs for China announced an import ban on food products from over 100 Taiwanese companies.

Of those 100 Taiwanese companies, 35 are exporters of biscuits and pastries, including famous Taiwanese companies like Kuo Yuan Ye Corp (郭元益), Yu Jan Shin (裕珍馨), Kuai Kuai Co (乖乖), Imei Foods Co (義美食品), Chiate Bakery (佳德) and Kuang Ta Hsiang Foodstuffs Co (廣達香).

The other companies exported food products like tea, honey and seafood. Of the 3,200 Taiwanese food products registered for export to China, 2,066 (64.6%) had their imports suspended.

Officially, Beijing says that the blacklisted companies failed to renew their export registration, and can only sell their products until the end of August 2022.

However, the late night announcement, and the fact that only Taiwanese exporters are required to file their registration documents by June 2022, instead of June 2023 like exporters from other countries; strongly suggest that this move was motivated by Pelosi’s visit.

China May Ban Taiwan Food Over Pelosi, But Not Chips!

Despite the dramatic late night announcement, this move was relatively benign as the banned exports only make up 0.1% or US$650 million of Taiwan’s total exports.

Last year, Taiwan exported US$44 million worth of pastries to China, but that fell to only US$10 million during the first half of 2022.

Seafood exports to China were more substantial at US$280 million, but tea exports were just under US$32 million, and honey exports was a minuscule US$35,000.

On the other hand, China does not dare to ban the import of Taiwanese microchips or electronics, because it has grown reliant on them.

After the US imposed sanctions on Chinese chipmakers in 2018, China increased imports of Taiwanese memory chips by a whopping 57% in just 3 years!

In fact, Taiwanese exports to China surged by 24.8% to an all-time high of US$188.9 billion in 2021, largely due to high demand for their computer chips.

No matter what their Wolf Warriors may threaten, China is still too reliant on Taiwan for high-end semiconductors to really threaten its supply, and it is not ready to invade Taiwan with a realistic chance of success.

By targeting only a small portion of relatively inconsequential Taiwanese imports, China is just slapping Taiwan on the wrist.

The Taiwanese should play along and moan like they have been mortally wounded to give China some face, so it can (gracefully) retreat from the uncomfortable corner it back itself into.

Indonesia Bans Steam, PayPal, Epic Games + More!

Indonesia just banned a number of major websites including Steam, Epic Games, PayPal and Battle.net!

Here is what you need to know!

Indonesia Banned Steam, PayPal, Epic Games + More!

On 30 July 2022, Indonesians woke up to the shocking discovery that a number of gaming platforms like Steam, Epic Games, Origin, Ubisoft and Battle.net are now banned!

Not only were gaming platforms banned, Indonesia also banned major websites and digital services like PayPal and Waze.

Indonesian netizens have started sharing tips on how to bypass this sudden ban – by using VPN, or changing their DNS servers, to bypass what appears to be an IP block.

Why Indonesia Banned Steam, PayPal, Epic Games, Etc!

There was no official announcement by the Indonesian government, but it is likely that Indonesia banned Steam, PayPal, Epic Games and a bunch of other websites and digital platforms because they failed to register as an Electronics System Provider / Penyelenggara Sistem Elektronik (PSE).

On November 24, 2020, the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) imposed a new regulation calling for all local and international digital services to register with them for cybersecurity and user protection purposes.

Failure to comply with that regulation would subject the digital service to being banned / blocked in Indonesia.

Here is a partial list of major websites, platforms and digital services registered with the Indonesian government, and those that have not been registered, or are known to be blocked.

Those on the unregistered list are likely to be blocked, if not already blocked. Interestingly, Telegram is listed as registered, but is currently inaccessible (blocked) in Indonesia.

On July 15 – just 2 weeks earlier – Kominfo warned that digital service providers will be banned in Indonesia on July 21, 2022 if they refused to register.

The deadline for all PSE registration – both domestic and foreign – was set at July 20, 2022. After that, Kominfo would start banning unregistered apps and services.

At that time, Kominfo reported that many major brands and companies have yet to register with them, like Google (which owns YouTube, Google Drive, Gmail, etc.), Meta (which owns WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook), Twitter, Netflix, PUBG Mobile and Mobile Legends.

Malaysia Officially Bans Thor: Love and Thunder!

Malaysia just officially banned the release of Thor : Love and Thunder, likely over censorship requirements!

Earlier : Thor : Love and Thunder Postponed!

Thor : Love and Thunder was scheduled to be launched in Malaysia on July 7, in line with the global release (July 8 in the United States).

Cinemas had already opened up booking for the tickets, with many Malaysians purchasing them in advance.

However, on 1 July 2022 came the shocking announcementthe release date for Thor : Love and Thunder in Malaysia has been postponed for two weeks, to 21 July 2022!

Then, on 13 July 2022, Disney postponed the release of Thor : Love and Thunder in Malaysia indefinitely.

Read more : Why Thor: Love and Thunder Is Likely Banned In China!

Now : Thor : Love and Thunder Officially Cancelled

Unfortunately, on 28 July 2022, Disney announced that Thor : Love and Thunder would not be released in Malaysia.

This was announced by Malaysian cinema chain, GSC :

THOR: Love and Takde. Officially. ⚡️💔

Dear Valued Customers,

Please be informed that Disney has updated us that Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder will not be releasing in Malaysia after all.

We appreciate your patience and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Please buy our merchandise ok.

We Malaysians all saw this coming, didn’t we?

Thor : Love and Thunder Faced Censorship Hurdles

It is currently unknown why the release date for Thor : Love and Thunder in Malaysia was banned from its cinematic release.

But Malaysians have long expected the film to be censored, especially the scene of Thor’s naked butt.  As director Taika Waititi shared, the movie will showcase Chris Hemsworth’s mighty cheeks in their full glory.

So it was possible that the earlier delay was to allow certain cuts or mosaicking to be made to the film to allay the delicate sensitivities of the Film Censorship Board of Malaysia. Unlike the brief LGBT kiss that got Lightyear banned in Malaysia and 14 other countries, it seems that Disney may be open to at least blurring Thor’s ass.

Read more : The Brief Kiss That Got Lightyear Banned In 14+ Countries!

There is also the “sensitive” issue of LGBTQ+ themes that have already gotten the movie banned in China. There are several short LGBTQ+ scenes in the movie.

But censoring them is likely a line too far for Disney / Marvel to cross.

  • Bisexual Asgardian King Valkyrie (Tessa Thomson) kisses a maiden’s hand
  • At two other scenes, characters reference and discuss King Valkyrie’s late girlfriend.
  • Korg (Taika Waititi) is shown to be gay.
  • Korg references having two dads.
  • Korg settles down with a fellow Korean named Dwayne.

It is likely that Malaysian film censors could not accept those short LGBTQ+ scenes either, and so Thor: Love and Thunder ended up banned from being shown in the cinemas, like in China.

Maybank MAE + M2U Apps Running Again After Going Down!

Maybank just announced that their MAE and M2U mobile banking apps are now up and running, after going down for several hours!

Here is what you need to know…

Maybank MAE + M2U Mobile Apps Down!

On the morning of 25 July 2022, the MAE and M2U mobile apps went down, which Maybank confirmed.

As it so happened, both apps failed on the 25th of the month, which is when Malaysian civil servants and many other employees receive their pay.

That led to a lot of complaints, as people could not transfer the funds using the apps.

Fortunately, the Maybank website itself was operational, so users were advised to access the Maybank2U website using their web browser instead.

#MBBAlert Dear valued customers,

Kindly be informed that you may perform your banking services on Maybank2u web. We are currently experiencing intermittent slowness on our MAE and M2U MY apps.

Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused and we are working to resolve the matter as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and continuous support.

Maybank did not reveal what was the reason both their M2U mobile banking app, and their MAE ewallet failed.

They finally resolved it several hours later, just before 2:30 PM.

#MBBAlert Dear valued customers,

Kindly be informed that all our services are back to normal and you may perform your banking transactions across our platforms.

Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused today. We thank you for your continued patience and support.

This isn’t the first time Maybank users had trouble with their banking services. On 17 January 2022, all of Maybank’s online and banking services went down!

No More Cash Payment At KKM Hospitals + Clinics!

Public hospitals and clinics under KKM will no longer accept cash payments starting 1 October 2022!

Here is what you need to know…

No More Cash Payment At KKM Hospitals + Clinics!

From 1 October 2022 onwards, public hospitals and clinics under the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM) will no longer accept cash payments.

They will only accept payments through e-payment methods like :

  • debit card
  • credit card
  • e-wallet

They will, however, accept cash payment if the customer has no other payment options, or a bank account.

KKM is aiming to achieve 95% cashless transactions by December 2022.

Why KKM Hospitals + Clinics Will No Longer Accept Cash Payments

This initiative to eliminate cash payments at KKM health facilities is part of the 2021 Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint, which called for all federal and state agencies to prioritise cashless payments by the year 2022.

The 2021-2022 KKM Anti-Corruption Plan also called for cash payments to be eliminated at public hospitals and clinics.

The Malaysia Ministry of Health believes that eliminating cash payments at their health facilities will :

  • reduce the risk of leakage of public funds
  • increase efficiency by making payments at the counter faster, easier and safer
  • reduce the cost and work process of collecting payments
  • reduce the risk of COVID-19 infections through contactless payment

To that end, KKM had ordered the implementation of cashless payment systems at all health facilities back in June 2022, with full implementation starting 1 October 2022, targeting 95% cashless payments by December 2022.

WHO Declares Monkeypox A Global Emergency With 16K Cases!

WHO just declared the monkeypox outbreak as a global emergency, after over 16,000 cases were reported in 75 countries!

Here is what you need to know…

WHO Declares Monkeypox A Global Emergency With 16K Cases!

On 23 June 2022, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus convened an emergency committee meeting under Article 48 of the International Health Regulations to discuss the current monkeypox outbreak.

The Emergency Committee decided that the monkeypox outbreak did not represent a global emergency at that meeting. At that time, there were just over 3,000 cases of monkeypox in 47 countries.

However, Dr. Tedros convened another emergency committee meeting on Thursday, July 21, 2022, after the outbreak expanded to over 16,000 cases in 75 countries.

Even though the Emergency Committee once again was unable to reach a consensus, Dr. Tedros nevertheless declared that the monkeypox outbreak was officially a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), based on these reasons :

  1. The information showed that the monkeypox virus has spread rapidly to many countries that have not seen it before.
  2. The three criteria for declaring a PHEIC under the International Health Regulations have been met.
  3. The advice of the Emergency Committee, which did not reach a consensus.
  4. The scientific principles, evidence and other relevant information are currently insufficient and leave us with many unknowns.
  5. The risk to human health, international spread, and potential for interference with international traffic.

Read more : What You Must Know About Monkeypox!

Monkeypox Global Emergency : WHO Assessment + Recommendations

In his July 23, 2022 press conference, Dr. Tedros gave the WHO’s assessment of the monkeypox global emergency :

  1. The risk of monkeypox is moderate globally and in all regions, except in the European region where the risk is high.
  2. There is also a clear risk of further international spread, although the risk of interference with International traffic remains low for the moment.
  3. The monkeypox outbreak has spread rapidly around the world through new modes of transmission, which we understand too little.

WHO has issued an extensive list of Temporary Recommendations for four groups of countries :

  1. Countries that have not yet reported a case of monkeypox, or have not reported a case for more than 21 days.
  2. Countries with recently-imported cases of monkeypox and that are experiencing human-to-human transmission.
  3. Countries with transmission of monkeypox from animals to humans.
  4. Countries with manufacturing capacity for vaccines and therapeutics.

Although Dr. Tedros has declared monkeypox to be a global emergency, right now – this outbreak is concentrated among men who have sex with men, especially those with multiple sexual partners.

Therefore, it is essential that countries work closely with communities to offer effective information and services to protect the health, human rights and dignity of the affected community.

He warned that stigma and discrimination can be as dangerous as any virus, and called on civil society organisations to help WHO fight sigma and discrimination that may result from this monkeypox global outbreak.

With the current tools we have at hand, the world can stop transmission and bring the monkeypox outbreak under control.

Over 16,000 Monkeypox Cases Confirmed In 75 Countries!

Discovered in 1958, the first human infection was only reported in 1970, and there were only like 400 cases from 1970 to 1986.

Monkeypox became more common over time, with 2000 cases per year reported between 2011 and 2014, and several outbreaks in the US (2003 and 2021), UK (2018 and 2021), and Singapore (2019)..

However, nothing has come close to the 2022 monkeypox outbreak which has now affected at least 75 countries outside of endemic African countries, with over 16,000 cases!

China Fines Didi Global $1.2 Billion For Violating Laws!

China just fined Didi Global a whopping $1.2 billion for violating its cybersecurity, data security and privacy laws!

China Fines Didi Global $1.2 Billion For Violating Laws!

On Thursday, 21 July 2022, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) announced that Didi Global breached the country’s cybersecurity law, data security law, and personal information protection law.

The Chinese cyberspace regulator fined Didi Global 8 billion yuan ($1.2 billion), as well as a personal fine of 1 million yuan ($148,000) each on Chairman and CEO Cheng Wei, as well as President Liu Qing (also known as Jean Liu).

The facts of violations of laws and regulations are clear, the evidence is conclusive, the circumstances are serious, and the nature is vile.

Didi Global responded to the regulator’s announcement with a contrite statement “sincerely” accepting the judgement and penalties :

We sincerely accept this decision, and resolutely obey it. We will strictly follow the penalty decision and the requirements of relevant laws and regulations, conduct comprehensive and in-depth self-examination, and actively cooperate with supervision and complete rectification carefully.

We will take this as a warning and further strengthen the construction of cyberspace security and data security, strengthen the protection of personal information, and earnestly fulfill our social responsibilities. We will serve every passenger, driver and partner well, and realize the safe, healthy and sustainable development of the enterprise.

What Did Didi Do To Incur China’s Wrath?

According to an FAQ by the CAC, its investigators started their investigation of Didi in July 2021.

After conducting an extensive investigation, they found that Didi conducted data processing activities that “seriously affected national security”, and refused to comply with “the explicit requirements of regulatory authorities” and conducted “malicious evasion” of regulatory supervision.

They also stated that Didi Global committed 16 violations of China’s laws, including :

  1. Didi illegally collected 11.9639 million screenshots from its users’ mobile phone photo albums.
  2. Didi excessively collected 8.323 billion pieces of its users’ clipboard information, and application list information.
  3. Didi excessively collected 107 million pieces of passenger face recognition information, and 53.5092 million pieces of age group information, 16.3556 million pieces of occupational information, 1.3829 million pieces of family relationship information, and 153 million pieces of taxi address information.
  4. Didi excessively collected passengers’ evaluation of the drivers, when the app is running in the background, and 167 million pieces of precise location (longitude and latitude).
  5. Didi excessively collected 142,900 pieces of driver education information, and 53.976 billion pieces of “intent information”, 1.538 billion pieces of resident city information, and 304 million pieces of non-local business/travel information.
  6. Its users are frequently asked to provide “telephone permissions” while using its services.
  7. Inaccurate and clear description of user personal information processing, including device information.

The CAC noted that Didi started its bad practices in June 2015, and continued even after the Cybersecurity Law was implemented in June 2017, the Data Security Law started in January 2022, and the Personal Information Protection Law was implemented in November 2021.

Samsung To Reveal Z Flip 4, Z Fold 4 On 10 Aug 2022!

Samsung is set to reveal the new Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 foldable smartphones at the Galaxy Unpacked event on August 10, 2022!

Samsung To Reveal Z Flip 4, Z Fold 4 On 10 Aug 2022!

It’s official – Samsung will hold its Galaxy Unpacked event for foldable smartphones on 10 August 2022!

The teaser invitation cannot be clearer about their foldable intentions, using the side profile of what looks like the upcoming Galaxy Fold 4 smartphone mimicking the “greater than” symbol (>).

Innovation isn’t just about radical ideas; it’s about unlocking new experiences that transform our daily lives for the better. Meaningful innovations go beyond the technical and provide a platform upon which our everyday lives become richer and more versatile — opening us up to greater possibilities than ever before.

While you won’t get the full details until the Galaxy Unpacked event on 10 August 2022, the teaser invitation photo suggests that the Galaxy Flip 4 will at least look like the Galaxy Flip 3.

It would have the same shape, a dual camera module at the back, and side-mounted power button with an integrated fingerprint reader.

We can also expect two new smartwatches from Samsung – a smaller Galaxy Watch 5, and a larger Galaxy Watch 5 Pro (would have been called Classic). But if leaks are true – Samsung will be dropping the unique and incredibly useful rotating bezel.

Samsung is also expected to launch the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, offering a step-up in wireless audio to pair with their new foldable smartphones.

Register To Receive Discounts On Z Flip 4, Z Fold 4 + More!

From now until 10 August 2022, you can register your interest to receive an e-voucher discount which you can use to pre-order the next Galaxy foldable smartphone!

Whether you are planning to view the Galaxy Unpacked on 10 August 2022 or not, I highly recommend that you just “register your interest” to grab those e-vouchers first.

You never know if Samsung may pique your interest with whatever they launch that day!

Why Microsoft Teams Suffered Such A Massive Outage!

Microsoft Teams has finally been restored after suffering a massive outage that lasted many hours!

Here was what happened…

Microsoft Teams Suffers Massive Outage!

On Wednesday, 20 July 2022, thousands of users were unable to access Microsoft Teams, and it continued into Thursdays, 21 July 2022.

This was a big problem, because Teams had become an integral part of daily operations for many businesses that had adapted to a hybrid work pattern during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Microsoft Teams users relied on the service to organise their workflow and communicate internally like making calls and messaging each other.

The MS Teams problem also affected other services downstream, with some users reporting issues with Microsoft Office 365 as well.

Microsoft acknowledged the downstream impact to multiple Office 365 services with Teams integration, like Microsoft Word, Office Online and SharePoint Online.

Why Microsoft Teams Suffered Such A Massive Outage!

After 1.5 hours after Teams went down, Microsoft announced that they found the root cause – “a recent deployment contained a broken connection to an internal storage device, which result in impact“.

That’s tech-speak for “we installed a system upgrade that pointed to a storage device that does not exist, so MS Teams stopped working“.

They quickly redirected traffic to “a healthy service to mitigate impact“, which have allowed unaffected users to continue using MS Teams, but it did not seem to help those who lost access.

Although they identified the root cause, restoration appears to be taking time. Two hours later, they could only report that “Microsoft Teams functionality is beginning to recover“, which they repeated two hours later.

In the meantime, affected MS Teams users are creatively expressing their “frustration” on social media…

Update @ 3:56 PM (GMT+8) : The Microsoft 365 team announced that Teams availability has “mostly recovered“, but “a few service features” still required attention.

Malaysia Offers 2nd Booster To 50+ Years + Travellers!

Malaysia is now offering the 2nd booster dose to those who are 50 years or older, as well as people planning to travel overseas!

Here is what you need to know…

Earlier : Malaysia Gives 2nd Booster Dose To High-Risk Individuals!

Back in mid-April 2022, the Malaysia Ministry of Health (KKM) offered a second booster dose to high-risk individuals :

  • High-risk senior citizens aged 60 years and above, with co-morbidities like
    – diabetes
    – chronic lung disease
    – chronic renal disease, underlying dialysis
    – chronic liver disease
    – cerebrovascular disease
    – heart failure, ischaemic heart disease, cardiomyopathy
    – chronic neurological diseases
    – BMI of over 40
    – residents of long-term care facilities
  • Individuals who received the Sinovac or Sinopharm booster dose for travel purposes
  • Healthy senior citizens are advised to consult a doctor for second booster dose recommendation

Read more : Second Booster Dose Offered To High-Risk Individuals!

Now : Malaysia Gives 2nd Booster To 50+ Years + Travellers!

On 19 July 2022, the Malaysia Minister of Health, Khairy Jamaluddin, announced that the government will now offer the 2nd booster dose to :

  • individuals those who are 50 years and older, even if they do not have co-morbidities, and
  • individuals who are planning to travel overseas

The group in the 50-59 age bracket without any chronic diseases and anyone 50 and below who wants to travel overseas can receive second vaccine boosters.

As announced earlier, the second booster dose will continue to be offered to high-risk individuals living in long-term care facilities, adults 18 years and older with co-morbidities, and COVID-19 frontliners.

The second booster dose will be the Pfizer COMIRNATY vaccine, and it will be given :

  • at least 4-6 months after the first booster dose for senior citizens,
  • at least 3 months after recovery for senior citizens who had a COVID-19 infection,
  • and at least 1 month after the first booster dose for Sinovac / SInopharm recipients.

This second booster dose is optional, and is not compulsory. Your vaccination status will not change, whether you take the second booster dose or not.

You can either book your booster dose appointment on MySejahtera, or look for a nearby private healthcare facility offering a booster dose.

These booster doses are offered for FREE by the Malaysian government, as part of the PICK vaccination programme.

Why 2nd Booster Dose For Travellers Leaving Malaysia?

Even though many countries have opened up their economies, and even to travellers; the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t over.

Many countries are now facing spikes in COVID-19 cases, thanks to new Omicron subvariants that are highly contagious, and evade protection from both previous infections and vaccinations.

Thus, a second booster dose before travelling overseas will offer a short  but useful boost in antibodies that could protect travellers as they fly out of Malaysia into other countries.

This is particularly important for those who received the Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines. Both Chinese vaccines offer markedly lower protection, which quickly wane over a matter of weeks.

A Yale University study, for example, showed that Sinovac vaccine recipients will require TWO Pfizer booster doses, to adequately protect against the Omicron variant.

Therefore, if you received Sinovac / Sinopharm vaccine earlier, I highly recommend that you get the booster doses, even if you are not planning to travel overseas.

Read more : Why Sinovac recipients may need TWO Pfizer booster doses!

There is also a more practical consideration for people travelling overseas – some countries in Europe do not recognise the Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines, both as a primary series vaccine or a booster dose.

Therefore, they will be allowed to obtain a second booster dose, at least one month after receiving their first booster dose.

Putin Signs Law Banning Crypto Payments In Russia!

Russian President Vladimir Putin just signed into law a national ban on crypto payments in Russia!

Find out what’s going on, and what it means for cryptocurrencies in Russia!

Putin Signs Law Banning Crypto Payments In Russia!

On July 16, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin just signed into law a national ban on crypto payments in Russia.

This move comes after the Central Bank of Russia proposed an outright ban on using cryptocurrencies for payments or investments.

This ban does not go so far – it only bans payments using cryptocurrencies, while allowing people to continue investing in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereal, as well as digital assets like NFTs.

The new Russian law, as translated by Google, states that :

It is prohibited to transfer or accept digital financial assets as a consideration for transferred goods, performed works, rendered services, as well as in any other way that allows one to assume payment for goods (works, services) by a digital financial asset, except as otherwise provided by federal laws.

While it prohibits individuals and companies from paying for, and receiving, cryptocurrencies for goods and services, it allows the Russian government to use cryptocurrencies.

It also does not prohibit investing in cryptocurrencies or digital assets like NFT, leaving that open for now.

Read more : Bill Gates Mocks Crypto + NFTs As Assets For Fools!

Partial Crypto Ban Reflects A Russia In Quandary

This partial ban on cryptocurrency reflects Russia’s precarious financial situation after invading Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

The Russian government had, prior to that, been skeptical, if not hostile, about cryptocurrency. But US and European sanctions are forcing them to hold back.

The lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia, for example, just approved a draft bill on June 28 that would exempt cryptocurrency issuers from the Value Added Tax (VAT).

If passed by the upper house and signed into law by Putin, the lower house bill would also lower tax rates on income earned from selling cryptocurrencies – falling from 20% to just 13% for Russian companies, and 15% for foreign companies.

More recently, the Head of Russia’s Financial Policy Department even suggested that Russia could use cryptocurrencies to settle international payments.

Even Putin himself said that Russia had “certain competitive advantages” including a “surplus of electricity and well-trained personnel” to participate in crypto-mining, even though he is against using cryptocurrencies domestically.

If the Russian government chooses this path, it would be considered hypocritical in light of this ban on crypto payments in Russia. Cryptocurrencies are bad for the people, but good for the Russian government.

Why Thor: Love and Thunder Is Likely Banned In China!

Here’s why Thor: Love and Thunder will likely remain banned in China forever and ever…

Thor: Love and Thunder Has Not Been Approved In China!

Film regulators in China do not explain or comment publicly why they refuse to approve any movie, but anyone with more two neurons in their brains will be able to connect the dots.

Just like how Lightyear got banned for a brief kiss between two female characters, it seems that Chinese censors have no love for LGBT themes in Thor: Love and Thunder.

This was confirmed by two The Hollywood Reporter sources in China who said that Thor: Love and Thunder will likely remain banned because of LGBTQ+ themes in the movie.

Sources at two major cinema chains in China tell The Hollywood Reporter that they expect Thor 4 will face the same fate as Pixar’s Lightyear: denied censorship approval because of fleeting moments in the movie involving LGBTQ characters.

Read more : The Brief Kiss That Got Lightyear Banned In 14+ Countries!

What LGTBQ+ Scenes In Thor: Love and Thunder Concern China?

Thor: Love and Thunder was already postponed in Malaysia, allegedly over Thor’s butt cheeks. Perhaps this is also an issue for Chinese censors, but they are more concerned about its LGBTQ+ scenes.

Just how many LGBTQ+ scenes are there really? And how controversial are these scenes?

  • Bisexual Asgardian King Valkyrie (Tessa Thomson) kisses a maiden’s hand
  • At two other scenes, characters reference and discuss King Valkyrie’s late girlfriend.
  • Korg (Taika Waititi) is shown to be gay.
  • Korg references having two dads.
  • Korg settles down with a fellow Korean named Dwayne.

Read more : Thor : Love and Thunder Postponed, May Be Censored!

Thor: Love and Thunder Is 6th MCU Movie To Be Banned In China

Thor: Love and Thunder will just join a rather long list of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies banned in China.

Black Widow : It was released in May 2021, during the Chinese summer movie season, when there is usually a blackout of foreign movies.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings : It was not approved in China, after 2017 comments by actor Simu Liu resurfaced, in which he called China a “third world” country.

Eternals : It was apparently not approved, after a 2013 interview with China-born director Chloé Zhao resurfaced, in which she said that “there are lies everywhere” in the country.

Spider-Man: No Way Home : Hilariously, Chinese censors wanted Sony to remove the Statue of Liberty from the movie. Perhaps they should have asked David Copperfield instead…

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness : It was not approved because of a scene in which a newspaper kiosk appeared with the Epoch Times visible.

China Introduces COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate In Beijing!

China is introducing their first-ever vaccine mandate, to protect Beijing from a new COVID-19 outbreak!

Here is what you need to know…

China Introduces COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate In Beijing!

From Monday, July 11, 2022 onwards, Beijing residents will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination at these public locations :

  • Live performances
  • Entertainment venues like movie theatres, museums, art galleries, cultural centres
  • Gyms and training facilities, stadiums and other sports venues
  • Libraries and tutoring centres
  • Internet cafes

This vaccine mandate will apply to everyone, including medical staff, people working in community service operations, home furnishing operators, express delivery providers, and people attending conferences.

Beijing residents will also need to receive a booster dose, although exemptions will be available for people who don’t qualify for vaccination.

Beijing Municipal Health Commission deputy director Li Ang called for elderly people living in care homes, and people who plan to enter an entertainment venue, to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

He also said that care home staff and visitors, as well as tourists, should get the booster dose; and that Beijing’s health code system will be updated to show everyone’s vaccination status more prominently.

Despite the vaccine mandate, Beijing residents are still required to get tested at least every three days to enter all public venues.

It is unknown how people who received their COVID-19 vaccinations overseas can meet this requirement since the Chinese health code system does not even recognise foreign vaccines. In fact, people who were vaccinated overseas have not been able to get their vaccinations registered.

Why China Is Introducing COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate In Beijing

China is implementing its first-ever vaccine mandate in Beijing to tamp down a new outbreak of the more infectious BA.5.2 Omicron subvariant.

On Wednesday, July 6, Beijing CDC announced 12 new cases caused by the Omicron BA.5.2 subvariant, based on gene sequencing tests. They were from four different districts, including Yanqing and Changping in Beijing.

These cases were traced back to previously quarantined patients, although one case reported a day earlier was picked up through community testing. This suggests that community spread is still limited.

This new BA.5.2 Omicron outbreak started on July 4, apparently caused by people returning to Beijing after completing their entry quarantine period.

Chinese authorities appear to be implementing this vaccine mandate in hopes of avoiding a lockdown that had already shut down the northwestern city of Xi’an until at least next Wednesday, July 13.

As of January 2022, some 98% of Beijing’s 20 odd million residents have been fully vaccinated, including 12 million who received a booster dose. However, only 80% of Beijing’s senior citizens (60 years and older) have been vaccinated, as late as April.

£20 + £50 Paper Pound Sterling Notes Set To Expire!

The Bank of England is reminding everyone that the £20 and £50 pound sterling paper notes will expire in less than 3 months!

Here is what you need to know…

£20 + £50 Paper Pound Sterling Notes Set To Expire!

The Bank of England is reminding everyone that they have less than 3 months to use or swap their £20 and £50 pound sterling paper notes, which will soon expire!

The £20 and £50 pound sterling paper notes can still be used until 30 September 2022. After that, they are no longer legal tender.

But that does not mean they are worthless! Check in the next section on what you can do once these paper pound sterling notes expire!

£20 Pound Sterling

The £20 paper note featured the economist Adam Smith, and was introduced in 2007.

It is being phased out with a new £20 polymer note featuring the artist JMW Turner. This new polymer note was introduced on 20 February 2020.

£50 Pound Sterling

The £50 paper note featured the entrepreneur Matthew Boulton, and the engineer James Watt. This paper note was introduced in 2011.

It is being phased out with a new £50 polymer note featuring the scientist Alan Turing. This new polymer note was introduced on 21 June 2021.

What To Do After £20 + £50 Paper Pound Sterling Notes Expire?

After 30 September 2022, the £20 and £50 paper pound sterling notes will expire, and no longer be legal tender. They are more properly considered withdrawn notes.

That means you cannot use them to purchase goods and services, or pay businesses with them.

However, many UK banks will still accept these “expired” £20 and £50 paper notes as deposits. You can then withdraw new polymer notes from your bank account.

Some Post Office branches will also accept £20 and £50 paper notes as payment for goods and services, or as a deposit into a bank account.

As a final resort, the Bank of England (BoE) will readily exchange these withdrawn notes, through these methods :

By Post

The Bank of England accepts withdrawn notes sent to them by post. But be aware that you would be sending the notes at your own risk, and should take “appropriate measures to insure against loss or theft”.

You will need to fill in this postal exchange form, and send it to Department NEX, Bank of England, Threadneedle Street, London EC2R 8AH, together with

  • the banknotes you wish to exchange
  • a copy of your photo ID (for exchange of £700 or more)
  • a copy of proof of address (for exchange of £700 or more)
  • a cover letter with a company letterhead (for businesses)

The BoE will pay the money into your bank account, by cheque, or in new banknotes (if the exchange is less than £50).

The BoE will also accept overseas exchanges, but you will need to provide a BIC/SWIFT code as well as your IBAN or bank account number. The BoE will not charge for this service, but your account must be able to accept GBP, and your bank or intermediaries may charge you for this service.

The Bank of England offers a counter service at Threadneedle Street, London, EC2R 8AH, which is open from 9:30 AM to 3 PM, Monday to Friday. It is closed on the weekend, and on bank holidays.

However, the BoE warns that this counter can have long queues, and waiting times may be up to an hour. So they recommend sending your banknotes through post.

Those who are exchanging their withdrawn paper notes at the counter should bring two original identity documents – one photo ID, and one proof of address (mandatory for exchange of £700 or more).

You may be asked to fill in a form, or provide additional evidence to support the origin of the banknotes. For example, if the money was from an estate, you will need to provide copies of death certificate, wills or grant of probate.

The BoE will give you new banknotes, or pay the money into your bank account (which currently takes at least 20 working days due to the backlog).

They can pay the money into any account that accepts GBP payments via SWIFT transfer. They do not charge for this service, but your bank / intermediaries may charge you.

New £20 + £50 Paper Pound Sterling Security Features

When you get the new £20 and £50 pound sterling polymer notes, be sure to look out for their new security features.

Hologram Image Change

If you tilt the new polymer notes from side to side, you will see the hologram image change between “Twenty / Fifty” and “Pounds”.

See Through Windows

Look at the metallic image over the main window. Check the foil is gold and green on the front of the note and silver on the back.

Within the two gold foil squares on the front of the note, the image changes between ’50’ and a ‘£’ symbol when the note is tilted.

Look for a second, smaller window in the bottom corner of the note.

FBI + MI5 Issue Joint Warning On Chinese Spying!

The FBI and MI5 just issued a joint warning about economic spying and hacking operations by the Chinese government!

Here is what you need to know…

FBI + MI5 Issue Joint Warning On Chinese Spying!

On July 7, 2022, FBI Director Christopher Wray joined MI5 Director General Ken McCallum at the MI5 London headquarters to issue a joint warning about Chinese spying and cyberattacks.

Ken McCallum said that MI5 was running seven times as many investigations into China, as it had just four years ago. He also said that MI5 planned to double that to tackle the widespread attempts.

Christopher Wray, on the other hand, stressed that the FBI had substantially increased its investigations into China, and is currently managing about 2,000 problems, and opening about two counterintelligence cases every day.

The Chinese government is set on stealing your technology – whatever it is that makes your industry tick – and using it to undercut your business and dominate your market.

Maintaining a technological edge may do more to increase a company’s value than would partnering with a Chinese company to sell into that huge Chinese market, only to find the Chinese government and your partner stealing and copying your innovation.

Both McCallum and Wray alleged that the Chinese government is engaged in a “coordinated campaign” to “cheat and steal [technology] on a massive scale“.

They also stressed that China’s hacking programme dwarfs that of any other major country, and that it has a global network of intelligence operatives.

FBI + MI5 : China Also Preparing To Shield From Sanctions

Even more worrying is the fact that China is working to shield its economy from any future sanctions, obviously learning from how the West punished Russia for invading Ukraine.

This suggests that China is at least preparing for the possibility, if not the eventuality, of insulating its economy from potential sanctions, should it attack Taiwan.

Wray said that China is “trying to cushion themselves from harm if they do anything to draw the ire of the international community”, and that the Chinese government is pressuring Western businesses not to criticise Beijing or its policies.

He declined to say whether an invasion of Taiwan has become more likely due to these measures, but warn that Western investments in China could be similarly impacted by such a conflict.

Just as in Russia, Western investments built over years could become hostage, capital stranded. Supply chains and relationships disrupted.

Wray also shared that the Chinese government had directly interfered in a New York congressional election, because they did not want a candidate who was a critic and a former Tiananmen Square protestor to be elected.

China has for far too long counted on being everybody’s second-highest priority. They are not flying under the radar anymore.

Both Wray and McCallum said that the intention of the joint address was to “send the clearest signal” to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), because if China decides to invade Taiwan, it would cause “one of the most horrific business disruptions the world has ever seen“.

FBI + MI5 : Examples Of Chinese Spying

McCallum shared some specific cases of Chinese spying activities that MI5 detected and thwarted.

Covert Theft

Late last year Chinese intelligence officer Shu Yenjoon was convicted in a US court on charges of economic espionage and theft of trade secrets from the US aviation sector.

Shu was active in Europe too: he’d been part of a prolific Ministry of State Security network targeting the aerospace sector.

MI5 worked with those being targeted in the UK to mitigate the risks until the FBI action could solve the problem for both of us.

Tech Transfer

Clandestine espionage methodology isn’t always necessary. Take the tale of Smith’s Harlow, a UK-based precision engineering firm. In 2017 Smith’s Harlow entered into a deal with a Chinese firm, Futures Aerospace. The first of three agreed technology transfers saw Futures pay £3m for quality control procedures and training courses.

You know how this ends: after further sharing of valuable IP, Futures abandoned the deal. Smith’s Harlow went into administration in 2020. As their Chairman put it: “They’ve taken what they wanted and now they’ve got it, they didn’t need the shell of Smith’s”.

Information Advantage

The CCP doesn’t just use intelligence officers posing as diplomats in the classic fashion. Privileged information is gathered on multiple channels, in what is sometimes referred to as the ‘thousand grains of sand’ strategy.

In Germany a retired political scientist and his wife who together ran a foreign policy think tank passed information to the Chinese intelligence services for almost ten years.

In Estonia a NATO maritime scientist was convicted for passing information to his Chinese handlers, who claimed to be working for a think tank.

Cultivating New Contacts

The deceptive use of professional networking sites is well known. Seemingly flattering approaches turn into something more insidious – and damaging.

In one example a British aviation expert received an approach online, ostensibly went through a recruitment process, and was offered an attractive employment opportunity. He travelled twice to China where he was wined and dined. He was then asked – and paid – for detailed technical information on military aircraft. The ‘company’ was actually run by Chinese intelligence officers.

Chinese Response To FBI + MI5 Spying Allegations

Chinese government officials naturally rejected spying allegations by the FBI and MI5.

A spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu, called the accusations groundless and said that China “firmly opposes and combats all forms of cyber-attacks“, and would “never encourage, support or condone cyber-attacks“.

His statement also said that the Taiwan issue was “purely China’s internal affair” and that there was “no room for compromise or concession“. It also said that China “will strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and efforts“, but noted that China would “reserve the option of taking all necessary measures in response to the interference of foreign forces“.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian did not address the claims directly, but accused the United States of being the real danger instead.

The relevant US politician has been playing up the so-called China threat to smear and attack China. Facts have fully proven that the US is the biggest threat to world peace, stability and development.

We urge this US official to have the right perspective, see China’s developments in an objective and reasonable manner and stop spreading lies and stop making irresponsible remarks.

Shanghai Police Data On 1 Billion Chinese Citizens Leaked!

A hacker is selling data on a billion Chinese citizens, that he stole from the Shanghai national police database!

Find out what’s going on, and what this data breach entails!

Shanghai Police Data On 1 Billion Chinese Citizens Leaked!

A hacker who called himself “ChinaDan” posted in the Breach Forums that he hacked into the Shanghai National Police (SHGA) database and stole more than 23 terabytes of data.

He is offering to sell data on 1 billion Chinese citizens, including their name, address, birthplace, national ID number and mobile numbers, for 10 bitcoins – which is currently worth about US$204,285 / €200,227.

In 2022, the Shanghai National Police (SHGA) database was leaked. This database contains many TB of data and information on billions of Chinese citizen.

Databases contain information on 1 billion Chinese national residents and several billion case records, including: name, address, birthplace, national ID number, mobile number, all crime/case details.

He also posted a sample of 750,000 data entries from the three main indexes of the database, for potential buyers to evaluate.

Shanghai Police Database Left Unsecured For 14 Months!

ChinaDan claimed that the SHGA database was left unsecured on an Alibaba Cloud server. This was confirmed by several cybersecurity experts who had earlier stumbled upon the same database.

Even worse, the database was apparently left unsecured for at least 14 months! Vinny Troia – the founder of dark web intelligence first, Shadowbyte, said that he first discovered the SHGA database “around January” 2021.

Troia even downloaded one of the main indexes of the SHGA database, which contained information on nearly 970 million Chinese citizens (at that time).

And best of all – they made the data available to anybody who registers for an account!

The site that I found it on is public, anybody (could) access it, all you have to do is register for an account. Since it was opened in April 2021, any number of people could have downloaded the data.

Either they forgot about it, or they intentionally left it open because it’s easier for them to access. I don’t know why they would. It sounds very careless.

Read more : Did Hackers Release Pfizer + Moderna Vaccine Death Data?!

This Was Second Hack Of Shanghai National Police Database!

Bob Diachenko – a Ukrainian cybersecurity researcher – discovered the database independently in April, and noticed that the databased was attacked in mid-June by a hacker who copied the data, destroyed the copy on the server and left a ransom note demanding 10 bitcoins for its recovery.

By July 1, the ransom note disappeared, but only 7 gigabytes of data was available on the server, instead of the earlier 23 TB.

It is unknown if this data ransom “hack” was performed by ChinaDan, or a different hacker.

Diachenko said that the unsecured and exposed database continued to be used after that, until it was shut down over the weekend, after news of the data leak broke.

Maybe there was some junior developer who noticed it and tried to remove the notes before senior management noticed them.

This is shocking because it suggests that the database administrators were already aware of a prior breach, but did nothing to secure the database, or shore up cybersecurity measures.

Read more : Was Facebook Taken Down By 13 Year-Old Chinese Hacker?

Most Of China Affected By Shanghai Police Data Leak!

The Shanghai National Police data leak is currently the largest leak of public information ever.

It does not just cover people who live in, or have been in Shanghai. The database actually has information on over 70% of its 1.4 billion population in almost all counties in China.

The data contained information about almost all the counties in China, and I have even discovered data related to a remote county in Tibet, where there are only a few thousand residents.
– Yi Fu-Xian, a senior scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

This massive data leak acutely demonstrates the risk of government collection of data. China notably collects a tremendous amount of data on its citizens, including digital and biological data through facial recognition, iris scanners, social media tracking and phone trackers.

Once such data is leaked, it is forever exposed, putting people at risk of scams, identity theft, or even extortion.

China Censors Coverage Of Shanghai Police Data Leak

The Chinese government and the Shanghai Police have both refused to comment on the massive data leak.

Instead, they started blocking related words on Weibo, like “Shanghai data leak”, “data leak”, “Shanghai national security database breach”, “1 billion citizens’ record leak”.

Censors have also scrubbed news on this data breach from WeChat, with one popular WeChat user telling his 27,000 followers that he had been summoned to be questioned by the police.

China’s major English-language media like CGTN, Global Times, Xinhua, etc. have also not published any story on the Shanghai police data leak, despite public interest and its wide-ranging consequences for China.

Crypto Hedge Fund 3AC Filed For Chapter 15 Bankruptcy!

Cryptocurrency hedge fund, Three Arrows Capital (3AC) just filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy! Here is what you need to know…

Crypto Hedge Fund 3AC Filed For Chapter 15 Bankruptcy!

The 2022 Crypto Winter continues to blow hard and cold…

On Friday, July 1, 2022, Singapore-based cryptocurrency hedge fund, Three Arrows Capital (3AC) filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy in the Southern District of New York.

Representatives from the law firm Latham & Watkins filed the Chapter 15 bankruptcy filing to legally protect its US assets from creditors in the United States.

In the legal filing, they stated that “the Debtor’s business has collapsed in the wake of extreme fluctuations in cryptocurrency markets” and “the Debit commenced a liquidation processing before the BVI Court” on June 27, 2022.

This move came after a British Virgin Islands court ordered the liquidation of 3AC on Monday, June 27, 2022.

Voyager Digital revealed that 3AC failed to make payments on loans made up of US$350 million in USDC and 15,250 BTC (worth US$306 million), and issued them a notice of default on the same Monday, June 27.

3AC Founders Remain Silent On Bankruptcy, Location Unknown

Founded in 2012 by Zhu Su and Kyle Davis, 3AC managed about $10 billion in assets as recently as March 2022, but that sank to just $3 billion a month later.

3AC was dogged by persistent insolvency rumours in the last few weeks, with rumours of more than US$400 million in losses when the cryptocurrency markets collapsed between May and June 2022.

Zhu and Davis admitted in a WSJ interview that 3ACa lost their $200 million investment following the collapse of Luna and its sister coin, TerraUSD.

8 Blocks Capital chief executive Danny Yuan also alleged that 3AC had misappropriated US$1 million of its funds to pay off their margin calls.

Both co-founders have remained silent over the implosion of 3AC, and its bankruptcy. Zhu’s last Twitter post was on June 15, in which he sought to allay rumours of insolvency, while Davies has not said a word.

According to the lawyers from Latham & Watkins, their current locations are unknown, and they are “rumoured” to have left Singapore.

The foreign representatives understand and believe that while the debtor has had certain operations in Singapore, Mr. Davies and Mr. Zhu’s current location remains unknown. They are rumored to have left Singapore.

India Just Banned Almost All Single-Use Plastic Items!

India just imposed a ban on almost all single-use plastic items, to combat plastic pollution!

India Just Banned All Single-Use Plastic Items!

On Friday, July 1, 2022, India imposed a ban on all single-use plastic items – everything from straws and disposable cutlery to cigarette packets!

With the ban in effect, the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of all identified single-use plastic items are hereby prohibited in India.

Those who violate this single-use plastic ban may be jailed for up to five years, or fined more than 100,000 rupees (about US$1,267 | £1,046 | RM 5,582).

The Indian government has setup special control rooms to monitor and enforce the ban at national and state levels.

India Still Allows Some Single-Use Plastic Items

This measure was announced more than two years ago by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on January 26, 2019. The list of prohibited single use plastic items include :

  • plastic straws
  • plastic cups, glasses, plates, trays, spoons, forks, knives
  • ear buds with plastic sticks
  • plastic flags
  • plastic stirrers for tea / coffee
  • wrapping and packaging films
  • plastic sticks for balloons, candy and ice-cream
  • cigarette packets, sweet boxes, invitation cards
  • polystyrene (thermocol / styrofoam) decoration
  • plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns thick

The items have been chosen on the basis of three criteria – their low utility, high littering potential and availability of alternative materials.

We know that the manufacturers of these banned items have already shifted or are in the process of shifting, and notices had been sent out by the CPCB last year to these companies alerting them of the ban and to begin the process.

We have given manufacturers plenty of time for preparation – 11 months – before the ban was to come into force. We believe that we have their support and cooperation.

– Indian Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yada

The only single-use plastic items exempted from this ban are PET plastic water bottles, and thick plastic bags.

In 2021, India had already banned plastic bags with a thickness of below 75 microns thick. The government has asked manufacturers and importers to increase the thickness of plastic bags, to promote reuse.

India’s Central Pollution Control Board is also asking people to switch to cotton and jute bags, clay cups, bamboo or wooden cutlery, as well as items made of biodegradable materials.

Minecraft YouTuber, Technoblade, Has Died : so long nerds

YouTube just lost one of its Minecraft maestros – Technoblade – to cancer, and he wrote a last message to those who supported him through the years…

Minecraft YouTuber, Technoblade, Has Died : so long nerds

On June 30, 2022, Technoblade’s father revealed in a video that he has died, after succumbing to metastasis from his cancer.

Technoblade disclosed that he had diagnosed with sarcoma in August 2021, after complaining of pain and swelling in his right arm. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy proved unsuccessful, so he underwent a limb salvage operation to avoid amputating his right arm.

Unfortunately, his cancer metastasised and he passed away sometime in June 2022. He was only 23 years old.

In the video titled “no long nerds”, Technoblade’s father revealed that his real name was Alex, and read a letter he wrote just 8 hours before he died.

Hello everyone, Technoblade here. If you’re watching this, I am dead. So let’s sit down and have one final chat.

My real name is Alex. I had one of my siblings call me Dave one time in a deleted video from 2016, and it was one of the most successful pranks we ever done.

Thousands of creepy online dudes trying to get overly personal, going, “Oh hey, Dave, how’s it going?”

Sorry for selling out so much in the past year, but thanks to everyone that bought hoodies, plushies and channel memberships. My siblings are going to college!

Well, if they want to. I don’t want to put any dead brother peer pressure on them. But that’s all from me.

Thank you all for supporting my content over the years. If I had another hundred lives, I think I would choose to be Technoblade again every single time as those were the happiest years of my life.

I hope you guys enjoyed my content and that I made some of you laugh. And I hope you all go on to live long, prosperous and happy lives, because I love you guys. Technoblade out.

Works From His Parents To Technoblade Fans

As a parent, I can only imagine how they must feel. No parent should ever have to bury their child. I’m not ashamed to say I cried through the video.

So it comes to no surprise to see his father hold back tears as he recounted how Alex was having a hard time getting his last words out. In the end, they didn’t do the reveal video they planned to do, and he asked his father to read his letter instead.

But Technoblade had a hard time writing it, and in the end, his father got down on his knees and told him that he should not wait for things to get better before writing it. That’s when Technoblade typed out his last words to his fans on his father’s laptop. Alex passed away eight hours later.

He was the most amazing kid anyone could ever ask for. I miss Technoblade. Thank you to all of you, for everything. You meant a lot to him.

The video ended with a message from Technoblade’s mother.

We, the family of Technoblade, wanted all of you to know just how much he adored and respected his fans and colleagues.

From Technoblade’s earliest online days, he was always strategizing ways to delight and reward his audience – giving away online prizes, encouraging good sportsmanship, and most of all sharing his Minecraft adventures for entertainment and laughs.

Even after his eventual successes he somehow managed to keep his good-natured humility, competing with an endearing balance between his confidence and self-deprecating wit. He avoided personal fame and worked hard to keep his true identity confidential, and we ask you to honor his wishes to protect his privacy and the privacy of his family.

This past year has had a lot of rough spots for our son as he battled stage four cancer. But he didn’t complain, and kept using his famous strategic mind to try to beat what he knew were almost impossible odds. My son’s bravery on this path was a shining lesson to all of us who were privileged to walk it with him. Thank you for sharing his journey through it all, as he did the work he loved for his beloved fans.

– Techno’s mom

I can only express my deepest condolences to Alex’s family. May their grief be assuaged by their memories of Alex, and how he touched so many people’s lives.

He may have gone too soon, but he will never be forgotten. As they say, Technoblade never dies!

However, the government is maintaining the subsidy for cooking oil sold in 1 kg polybag packages, which will remain priced at RM 2.50 per packet.

The abolishment of the palm cooking oil subsidy would save the government about RM 20 million a month.

On social media, Malaysians are generally resigned to the fact that they will have to put up with increased food prices going forward. Some have suggested buying an air fryer, or boiling / steaming food, to cut down on the use of oil.

Looking at the bright side of things – perhaps, this will spur Malaysians to adopt a healthier diet with less fried foods!

Their social media team is asking BizChannel users still experiencing problems to contact the BizChannel team at 1300 888 828 or +603 2297 3000 for further assistance.

Here is what you need to know…

Currently : MySejahtera Traveller’s Pass Required To Enter Malaysia!

Since 1 May 2022, the Malaysian government has liberalised air travel into Malaysia, waiving both quarantine and insurance requirements.

However, they still require all travellers to fill in their details in MySejahtera, to obtain a Traveller’s Pass, prior to departure.

  1. Download the MySejahtera app, and register for your MySejahtera account.
  2. Click on the Traveller icon in MySejahtera, and complete the pre-departure form
    a) fully-vaccinated travellers will receive a Digital Traveller’s Card

Maxis Network Down : Full Restoration Soon!

The Maxis mobile network has been down for several hours in the Klang Valley, but they say that the network will be fully restored soon!

Here is what you need to know…

Maxis Network Down : No Calls, No Internet

On Friday, June 30, 2022, Maxis experienced a significant network failure in the Klang Valley, with many people unable to make calls, or connect to the Internet using mobile data.

Maxis issued a press statement this morning, stating that they are working on restoring their network.

We are aware that our customers have been experiencing service disruptions. Rest assured that our team is working hard to identify and resolve the matter as soon as possible. We would like to thank our customers for their understanding and patience, and apologise for the inconvenience during this time.

There was a complete loss of signal, with some people being reverted to EDGE, instead of 4G LTE.

People from various areas of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, like Damansara Perdana, Ara Damansara, Puchong, Cheras, Ampang, Mutiara Damansara and Bandar Utama reported this problem.

Maxis Network Down : Full Restoration Soon!

At about 1:45 PM, Maxis announced that their network is being restored gradually, and they expect full restoration soon.

We would like to update our customers who were experiencing network disruptions earlier, that services are being restored gradually, and expect full restoration soon. We would like to once again thank our customers for their understanding and patience.

Just in case your connectivity isn’t restored automatically, you can try reset your phone’s connectivity by turning the Airplane mode on, and then off.

This will disconnect your phone from the Maxis network and reset the connection, hopefully restoring your access to the network.

You may have to do this 2-3 times. When I did it the first time, they switched me to the EDGE network and while I could make calls – they didn’t seem to be connecting.

I could only connect to the 4G LTE network after reconnecting for the second time. So keep trying, and you should get connected again.

Let’s see if Maxis issues its affected users some kind of compensation for this network failure… 😉

Malaysia Announces July-Aug Ceiling Price For Chicken, Eggs!

The Malaysian government just announced the ceiling price for chicken and eggs for July to August 2022!

Earlier : Malaysia U-Turns On Chicken Price Float

Just 3 days after announcing that the price of chicken and eggs would be freely floated, the government of Malaysia announced a U-turn.

At 5:45 PM on 24 June 2022, the Prime Minister of Malaysia Ismail Sabri announced that the government has cancelled the floating of chicken price, and will continue to impose a price ceiling.

Malaysia Announces July-Aug Ceiling Price For Chicken, Eggs!

On Wednesday, 29 June 2022, the Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Ronald Kiandee announced that the ceiling price for chicken and eggs for Peninsular Malaysia for July and August 2022.

From 1 July until 31 August 2022, the price of a standard whole chicken would be capped at RM 9.40, but there was no mention of a price cap for the super whole chicken (slaughtered and cleaned without legs, head, liver and gizzard).

The price for eggs would also go up in tandem, with Grade A eggs capped at 45 sen each, Grade B eggs capped at 43 sen each, and Grade C eggs capped at 41 sen each.

Here is a comparison table of the current and new prices, with my calculations on the difference :

Feb to June July to Aug Difference
Standard Whole Chicken RM 8.90 per kg RM 9.40 per kg +5.6%
Super Whole Chicken RM 9.90 per kg NA NA
Grade A Eggs RM 0.43 each RM 0.45 each +4.7%
Grade B Eggs RM 0.41 each RM 0.43 each +4.9%
Grade C Eggs RM 0.39 each RM 0.41 each +5.1%

In general, the ceiling price for chicken and eggs in Malaysia would be raised by about 5%, which is significantly lower than the 33% hike expected if their prices were freely floated.

This subsidy though isn’t really free, as taxpayers are ultimately footing the bill.

According to the government, it will spend RM 369.5 million for this additional subsidy on chicken and eggs, bringing the total amount spent to RM 1.1 billion since February 5, 2022.

China Slashes COVID-19 International Travel Quarantine!

China just relaxed entry requirements, by slashing more than half of its COVID-19 international travel quarantine!

Here is what you need to know…

China Slashes COVID-19 International Travel Quarantine!

On June 28, 2022, the Chinese National Health Commission announced a reduction of China’s quarantine requirement for international travellers.

China had earlier mandated that most inbound travellers must undergo a 14 + 7 quarantine protocol – at least 14 days at a government quarantine facility, followed by 7 days of self-isolation at home.

The new quarantine requirement will be a much shorter 7 + 3 protocol – travellers only need to spend 7 days at a quarantine facility, followed by 3 days of self-isolation at home.

Shorter Travel Quarantine, But China Still Maintaining Zero COVID

While China has relaxed its international travel quarantine requirements, that doesn’t mean it is going to quit its Zero COVID policy.

On the same day China announced the shorter quarantine policy, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed the Zero COVID policy on a visit to the Wuhan – where the pandemic started.

According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, he said that he would rather “temporarily sacrifice a little economic growth” than “harm people’s health“.

This announcement came one day after Beijing Daily – the official CCP newspaper – published a quote by a senior Communist Party official who said that Beijing would remain under the Zero COVID policy “for the next five years”.

That sparked panic, causing Beijing Daily to remove the quote after claiming it was an “editing error”. Chinese censors also went into overdrive, removing all references to the quote.

According to CNN which analysed the entire speech, Beijing party chief Cai Qi did discuss at length the possibility that Zero COVID policies may remain in place for Beijing over the next five years.

Those measures, he said, would include routine PCR tests, strict entry rules, regular health checks in residential neighbourhoods and public venues. There will also be rigorous monitoring and testing for people entering and leaving Beijing.

So Chinese citizens and foreigners willing to tolerate the travel quarantine will have to continue putting up with mass testing and lockdowns of entire cities over small outbreaks. How long that lasts is anyone’s guess…

FCC Commissioner Asks Apple + Google To Remove TikTok!

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr just publicly asked Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores!

Here is what you need to know about the renewed heat on TikTok!

FCC Commissioner Asks Apple + Google To Remove TikTok!

On June 29, 2022, FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr publicly called on Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores.

This move came after leaked TikTok audio recordings obtained by Buzzfeed News revealed that ByteDance staff in China (and possibly the Chinese government) retained extensive access to data on US citizens.

Read more : TikTok Leak Showed China Repeatedly Accessed Private User Data!

In his public letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the FCC Commissioner asked that TikTok be removed for “its pattern of surreptitious data practices”.

It is clear that TikTok poses an unacceptable national security risk due to its extensive data harvesting being combined with Beijing’s apparently unchecked access to that sensitive data.

But it is also clear that TikTok’s pattern of conduct and misrepresentations regarding the unfettered access that persons in Beijing have to sensitive U.S. user data – just some of which is detailed below – puts it out of compliance  with the policies that both of your companies require every app to adhere to as a condition of remaining available on your app stores.

Therefore, I am requesting that you apply the plain text of your app store policies to TikTok and remove it from your app stores for failure to abide by those terms.

FCC Commissioner Carr also labelled TikTok as a “sophisticated surveillance tool” that is designed to harvest “personal and sensitive data“.

At its core, TikTok functions as a sophisticated surveillance tool that harvests extensive amounts of personal and sensitive data.

Indeed, TikTok collects everything from search and browsing histories to keystroke patterns and biometric identifiers, including faceprints – which researchers have said might be used in unrelated facial recognition technology – and voiceprints.

It collects location data as well as draft messages and metadata, plus it has collected the text, images, and videos that are stored on a device’s clipboard. The list of personal and sensitive data it collects goes on from there.

This should come as no surprise, however. Within its own borders, the PRC has developed some of the most invasive and omnipresent surveillance capabilities in the world to maintain authoritarian control.

Carr ended his letter with an “ultimatum” of sorts – if Apple and Google do not remove TikTok from their app stores, they need to provide “separate responses” to him by July 8, 2022, explaining why TikTok does not contravene their App Store policies.

As of June 30, 2022, TikTok is still available to download in the US app stores of both Apple and Google.

If Apple and Google acts on the FCC Commissioner’s request, TikTok will only be removed from their US app stores. It won’t affect downloads in other countries.

Neither would it prevent users in the US from continuing to use TikTok. They just won’t be able to download it any longer, or update to newer versions.

FCC Commissioner Lists History Of TikTok Data Practices!

While the leaked TikTok audio recordings may have precipitated this open letter to Apple and Google, FCC Commissioner Carr pointed to a list of questionable data practices by TikTok in the past.

The list makes for really interesting reading, especially for those who are not up to date on TikTok’s privacy and data security issues :

  • In August 2020, TikTok circumvented a privacy safeguard in Google’s Android operating system to obtain data that allowed it to track users online.
  • In March 2020, researchers discovered that TikTok, through its app in the Apple App Store, was accessing users’ most sensitive data, including passwords, cryptocurrency wallet addresses, and personal messages.
  • In 2021, TikTok agreed to pay $92 million to settle lawsuits alleging that the app “clandestinely vacuumed up and transferred to servers in China (and to other servers accessible from within China) vast quantities of private and personally identifiable user data and content that could be employed to identify, profile, and track the physical and digital location and activities of United States users now and in the future.”
  • In March 2022, a report included current and former TikTok employees stating in interviews that TikTok delegates key decisions to ByteDance officials in Beijing and that an employee was asked to enter sensitive information into a.cn domain, which is the top-level domain operated by the Chinese government’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
  • Earlier, in 2019, TikTok paid $5.7 million to settle Federal Trade Commission allegations that its predecessor app illegally collected personal data on children under the age of 13.
  • India- the world’s largest democracy–has already banned TikTok on national security grounds for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting user data in an unauthorized manner.
  • Multiple U.S. military branches have also banned TikTok from government-issued devices due to national security risks, including the Navy, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps.
  • U.S. government officials have also urged troops and their dependents to erase the app from their personal phones.
  • U.S. national security agencies have similarly banned TikTok from official devices citing national security risks, including the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and the TSA.
  • The RNC and DNC have warned campaigns about using TikTok based on security concerns and the threat of officials in Beijing accessing sensitive data.
  • Citing data security concerns, private U.S. business operations have also banned TikTok from company devices, including Wells Fargo.
  • Once accessed by personnel in Beijing, there is no check on the CCP using the extensive, private, and sensitive data about U.S. users for espionage activities because compliance with the PC’s 2017 National Intelligence law is mandatory in China.
