Sony BRAVIA 4K HDR TVs Launched

On the 14th of April, Sony introduced their new BRAVIA 4K HDR TV series, with screen sizes of 55″ to 65″. The new Sony BRAVIA 4K HDR television series is designed to deliver a greater brightness range and higher contrast, making the best use of 4K HDR (High Dynamic Range) content with its unique backlighting technologies in a slim design.

Sony BRAVIA 4K HDR Experience With X93D & X85 Series

HDR is a burgeoning video standard that greatly expands the range of possible visual expression by reproducing higher brightness, higher contrast and more vibrant colors. HDR compatible content and services are expected to become more and more prevalent via Internet video services, TV broadcastings and Ultra HD Blu-ray titles.

The X93D series takes picture quality to new heights by delivering the best quality from HDR content. Sony’s new Slim Backlight Drive technology with a new grid-array backlighting structure, which was previously only available with full-array backlighting systems, allows X-tended Dynamic Range PRO technology to boost peak brightness and black levels more precisely and enhance contrast levels, while maintaining a slim form factor.

The 4K Processor X1 and its precision color mapping technology allows TRILUMINOS Display to reproduce a wider color range with accurate color details at any brightness level. The X1 also improves the streaming quality of 4K HDR images provided by Internet video services, such as Netflix. But the viewing experience goes beyond just the screen. A television should be great to look at in any environment.

When hung against a wall, the X93D series sits close to the wall and virtually disappears into it, leaving behind nothing but the picture itself. When the television is set on a TV rack or a cabinet, its clean cable management keeps wires out of view and looks equally elegant when viewed from behind.

This year, Sony is focusing on integrating BRAVIA TVs into the living room setting, with the notion of creating a smart living ecosystem that gives users the freedom to utilize a variety of Sony products with the TVs – by means of enhancing viewer experience.

The X93D and other 4K HDR TVs already bring stunning picture quality to whatever you’re watching but with the addition of these Sony products, ranging from digital cameras to audio systems, consumers and professionals are able to take their experiences to a whole new level – experiencing stunning still images and videos on a larger screen, thanks to sharper 4K HDR clarity, along with surround, sound enhancements to bring movies and music to life.

[adrotate banner=”4″]Some of the products that are compatible with the BRAVIA ecosystem include –
  • PMW-F55 CineAlta 4K Digital Cinema Camera

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Launch, Price & Specifications

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Launched!

On April 14, Canon launched the King of EOS, the EOS-1D X Mark II (Amazon). This is the long-awaited successor to the Canon EOS-1D X which was launched in March of 2012 – four long years ago. As such, the Mark II offers the latest developments in imaging technologies.

In this video, Jeffrey Kung (Assistant Director, Consumer Imaging and Information Division, Canon Marketing Malaysia) describes the new features packed into the new EOS-1D X Mark II (Amazon). He also took the opportunity to summarise the key features of the other Canon cameras released in 2016.

Don’t forget to check out our First Look At The EOS-1D X Mark II!

EOS-1D X Mark II Key Features

Built for quality high-speed photography

A split second can mean a lot to professional photographers, especially those in the sports, journalism and wildlife fields. Beyond being there in the right moment to capture that one unique shot, professionals require equipment quick enough to capture that split second, in impeccable image quality, with precise focus for a perfectly composed shot – something that the EOS-1D X Mark II (Amazon) is capable of delivering. With its new 61-point all points selectable AF system with 41-points cross type AF, photographers benefit from an expanded AF area (approximately 24 percent vertically) compared to the EOS-1D X.

Its low-intensity limit function at the centre AF is also improved to EV-3, thus ensuring a solid performance even in low-light and low contrast conditions. Beyond the hardware, the DSLR is equipped with Al servo AF III+, a new AF algorithm with AI servo scenes analysis that improves AF precision in scenarios involving fast and unexpected movements. With all 61-points compatible to effective aperture of f/8 or faster, autofocusing is possible even when using tele-converters on super telephoto lenses, equipment common in wildlife and sports photography.

Additionally, the mirror on the EOS-1D X Mark II (Amazon) is constructed with a new drive mechanism that quickly suppresses vibration which enables the DSLR to deliver a quick frame rate of 14 fps with AF and auto-exposure tracking enabled, and an even more impressive 16 fps when shooting with Live View, with no screen blackout. With a CFast 2.0 card slot for high-speed writing, the EOS-1D X Mark II can capture up to 170 RAW images and an unlimited number of JPEG images in continuous shooting mode.

4K image quality for EOS Movie

In 2012, the EOS-1D C was the first EOS DSLR to incorporate 4K movie recording. With the EOS-1D X Mark II (Amazon), users are now able to utilize 4K motion JPEG at 60/50p, resulting in amazingly smooth footages. The EOS-1D X Mark II’s Full HD recording feature comes with a new High Frame Rate mode that allows recording at 120/100, enabling slow motion video recording. The inclusion of a CFast slot caters to these high data-rate shooting modes.

With the addition of the Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DAF), a first in the EOS-1D series, users utilising phase-detection in Live View mode benefit from extremely fast auto-focusing and efficient tracking of moving subjects without aperture limitations. The DSLR also support EV-3 for all effective AF points within the sensor area when shooting 4K movies.

[adrotate group=”2″]

Similar to the EOS 7D Mark II, the EOS-1D X Mark II (Amazon) includes selectable adjustments for Movie Servo AF speed and Movie Servo AF tracking sensitivity, giving users more flexibility in controlling focus racking during video shooting. Additionally, the EOS-1D X Mark II is equipped with touch focus function for its DAF feature. With this, users can easily switch focus by tapping the LCD panel for AF point selection in Live View mode.

With the DSLR’s 4K Frame Grab function, users can also easily extract images of approximately 8.8 megapixels in JPEG format from 4K movies recorded on the camera without connecting to a computer. The camera’s ability to shoot at 60p means sports and wildlife photographers can now pick one out of the sixty images in every second of the video, thereby achieving a much higher image hit-rate and improving work efficiency.

Top-class image quality

The EOS-1D X Mark II (Amazon) breaks new ground for the EOS line with a newly developed 35mm full frame CMOS sensor, Dual DIGIC 6+ image processors, enhanced resolution of 20.2-megapixel images, and expanded ISO speeds of up to 409,600, one full stop higher than its predecessor the EOS-1D X. With this, users are able to achieve better shooting results in lowlight.

The new 360,000 pixel RGB + IR metering sensor and EOS iTR AF system on the EOS-1D X Mark II greatly improves tracking precision. For indoor shoots under artificial lighting, photographers can turn on an anti-flicker mode to detect high frequency flickering of lights, thus ensuring better exposure stability. With this feature, irregular exposure and colours caused by flickering lights can be better managed.

A new in-camera Digital Lens Optimizer is now able to process and optimize RAW images in-camera. Previously available only in post-production, this editing function includes chromatic aberration correction, peripheral illumination correction, and for the first time in EOS history, diffraction correction.

The combination of these corrective functions allows photographers to obtain higher quality JPEGs directly from the camera without using a computer, enabling fast image productions where time is of essence. The inclusion of Fine Detail picture style also pushes JPEG files to achieve even higher levels of sharpness.

Made to last

Every part of the EOS-1D X Mark II (Amazon) from its mirror to shutter mechanisms is built for endurance and durability, giving the DSLR a shutter life expectancy of 400,000 cycles. The EOS-1D X Mark II is encased in a robust magnesium alloy body and designed to be dust and drip-proof for enhanced protection against the elements, essential for reliability in the professional photographer’s varied line of work especially when working at outdoor shoots.

In terms of design and ergonomics, the grip and button operations were improved for greater comfort and operability for photographers of varying hand sizes. The control configuration on the EOS-1D X Mark II (Amazon) also makes the horizontal and vertical layouts more similar, so shooting landscape or portrait will have a similar feel. The EOS-1D X Mark II uses the LP-E19 battery, which has a 10% increase in capacity compared to the LP-E4N used in the EOS-1D X, providing photographers with longer usage while in the field.

[adrotate group=”1″]

Built in GPS function and optional Wireless File Transmitter

For the first time in the EOS-1D series, GPS is built into the body of the camera. This allows all the photos to be tagged with accurate location information, providing users specific location references especially when traveling in between assignments and locations. Access to satellite clocks also ensures accurate time-stamp information, allowing for more efficient organization of images.

File transfer is also made easy with the Wireless File Transmitter, WFT-E8D, available as an option with the EOS-1D X Mark II. The WFT-E8D supports high speed file transfer which supports IEEE802.11a/b/g/n/ac (5 GHz and 2.4 GHz band) wireless LAN.

When mounted on the EOS-1D X Mark II (Amazon), it allows seamless wireless connection between the photographer’s smartphone and the camera, allowing photographers to remotely control the camera for still image shooting, movie recording and transferring of images from camera to smartphone all via Canon’s Camera Connect app. The EOS-1D X Mark II is also equipped with a USB 3.0 port for high speed data transfer.

EOS-1D X Mark II Price & Availability

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is now available in Malaysia at a recommended retail price of RM 25,299 (inclusive of 6% GST). That is roughly US$ 6,325.

OPPO F1 Plus Press Release

Kuala Lumpur, Apr. 7, 2016 — Sporting a 16-MP front-facing camera, the OPPO F1 Plus launched at an event in Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall today. As the second device in the photography-focused Selfie Expert series, the F1 Plus blurs the boundaries between mid-range and premium, and takes the “Selfie Expert” title of the hot-selling F1 to an all new level.

Featuring powerful hardware, an eye-catching all-metal unibody, VOOC Flash Charge, and lightning-quick fingerprint recognition, the F1 Plus is also the first device to feature a brand-new technology in OPPO’s arsenal: the Hi-light Camera, which ensures that users can take clear, bright and colorful selfies in any light condition.

OPPO F1 Plus

Hi-light Camera: You in the Best Light

The F1 Plus’ 16 MP front-facing Hi-Light Camera has been purpose-built for catching clear, vivid photos in any lighting condition. Paired with the new Selfie Panorama feature, Beautify 4.0 and the front-facing Screen Flash, the Hi-Light Camera will allow users to get the perfect shot on the first snap, anywhere and anytime.

“It is well known that Petaling Jaya and George Town are ranked the top 10 of the ‘selfie cities’, however Malaysia as a country has such different cultural lives in every state which Malaysians can showcase to the world colourfully on social media. With the success of F1, we felt the need to push our boundaries further and enhance the selfie experience for Malaysians by providing an upgraded photography-focused phone which is the F1 Plus,” Chen Lu, Brand Manager of OPPO Electronics explained.

“F1 Plus is the ultimate ‘Selfie Expert’. Our product team has been working tirelessly, spending months in developing and fine tuning a tailored-made device for the selfie lovers. F1 Plus has a huge improvement in the selfie experience. It is a brand new selfie camera that can that can balance out a high pixilation selfie while providing a beautified front camera that is making you looking natural,” she added.

The OPPO F1 Plus features a custom-built Hi-light Camera

Great photos aren’t made by high pixel counts alone. The F1 Plus’ unique strength in front-facing shots lies in its special sensor, which arranges pixels in a unique pattern designed to maximize image quality, resulting in photos that are clear, bright and strikingly rich in color. Meanwhile, a large f/2.0 aperture increases the amount of light that enters the camera and ISOCELL technology works to ensure that all of it hits the sensor just where it should.

All told, the F1 Plus’ Hi-light Camera is four times more sensitive than standard cameras, has twice the dynamic range, and captures shots with four times less noise, compared to cameras without the technology. As a result, the Hi-light Camera produces exceptionally clear and bright images, and excels at low-light, back-lit and night-time photography.

In addition to the uniquely designed hardware, OPPO has also upgraded the F1 Plus’s photo-processing algorithms. After six months of testing and 150 iterations, Beautify 4.0 is optimized to capture selfies with bright, clear skin, and beautifully defined facial contours.

The new Selfie Panorama feature, perfect for capturing group photos, also debuts on the F1 Plus. With a few turns of the wrist, users can take extra-wide 120-degree front-facing photos, as the F1 Plus seamlessly combines three photos and ensures that the whole party makes it into the shot.

Rounding out the F1 Plus’ outstanding photography experience is the fast, steady and crystal-clear 13-MP rear shooter. The OPPO F1 Plus’ MediaTek Helio P10 2.0GHz, eight-core, 64-bit processor also comes equipped with the world’s first TrueBright image signal processor (ISP) engine, for enhanced color resolution and detail.

Fast, Convenient, Secure: VOOC Flash Charge and Smart Fingerprint Recognition

“Charge for five minutes, talk for two hours” became an iconic slogan for OPPO in 2015 in China, driving home the practicality of the exclusive VOOC Flash Charge technology, and helping convince more than 18 million users so far to say goodbye to dead batteries. The F1 Plus, which reaches a 75% charge after just half an hour of flash charging, is set to bring the convenience and safety of VOOC to even more users around the world.

“OPPO understands that Malaysians are living more visual lives than ever. So besides the new feature of 16 Mega Pixels, the F1 Plus phone has a special sensor on the camera lense and a pixel-restructuring algorithm, which differentiates the F1 series from other camera phones in the market,” said Marton Barcza, Global Community Manager & Product Export of OPPO. “The signature patented VOOC Flash Charge allows for 75% increase in battery life in just half an hour. Now with 25% faster app startup time and smooth multitasking, the F1 Plus is made much more convenient for the modern Malaysian fast-paced lifestyle.”

[adrotate banner=”5″]

OPPO’s VOOC Flash Charge adapter

What sets VOOC above other fast-charging technologies is its low-voltage approach to the problem. By adhering to the standard smartphone charging voltage of 5V, VOOC keeps the phone’s temperature low during charging, protecting the longevity of the battery and phone internals, and even allowing the user to simultaneously use their phone while they fast-charge, a function that no competitor can offer.

The OPPO F1 Plus uses a 2,850 mAh lithium polymer battery, allowing for 14 hours and 5 minutes of constant heavy use, and ensuring that the F1 Plus keeps users cruising from morning to night.

Front-facing fingerprint recognition

The F1 Plus is OPPO’s first phone to use front-facing fingerprint recognition. It’s able to recognize a fingerprint to unlock the phone in only 0.2 seconds. The fingerprint recognition system can also learn over time, gradually refining its image of the user’s fingerprint and making for an increasingly efficient and smooth unlock process.

Smooth, Fast and Free: New ColorOS 3.0 and 4G Dual-SIM

The OPPO F1 Plus cruises through multitasking with the MediaTek Helio P10 and 4 GB RAM, rounding out the package with 64 GB of storage space, which can be expanded by an additional 128 GB.

Adding to the smooth and flexible user experience is the smart SIM slot design, which offers a Nano-SIM slot, as well as an adaptable second slot that can accept either a second Nano-SIM or a microSD card for expanded memory. Both card slots support 4G and VoLTE HD voice calls.

Newly designed ColorOS 3.0

The F1 Plus is the first OPPO phone to come equipped with the all-new ColorOS 3.0. With a flat, simple design language, ColorOS 3.0 has a tidy and refreshing new look, and significantly reduces the phone’s built-in image library for increased efficiency. App startup time has also been boosted by 25% compared to ColorOS 2.1.

In conjunction with the launch, OPPO Malaysia has also introduced various hashtag campaigns to engage with the brand’s fans, also known as OFans. Hashtags are namely #OPPOMalaysia #OPPOF1Plus and #SelfieExpert.

Retail Prices and Pre-orders

As the newest middle to high end addition in one of OPPO Camera Phone’s core 2016 product series, the F1 Plus is retail at RM1,898 (~US$475) and poised to bring clear, bright and colorful photos to a wide range of users. F1 Plus will be available for online preorder on 11street.com starting from 7 April – 11 April 2016.

Lee Kwang-soo Launches Samsung Galaxy S7 edge To Great Fanfare

South Korean superstar, Lee Kwang-soo, flew into Malaysia to help launch the new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone to great fanfare. His fans started lining up for the best spots by 3 AM, and hundreds of them thronged the Suria KLCC Concourse by 10 AM.

In this video, Lee Sang Hoon, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics officially launched the Galaxy S6 edge, before Lee Jui Siang, Vice President, Mobile and IT Business Unit, Samsung Malaysia Electronics, detailed the unique features of the new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone.

Of course, many of you already know all that. After all, we had earlier posted our Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Preview, including our first experience using it with the Gear VR. In fact, you are probably one of those who tried to buy a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge in the first pre-order, and the second pre-order. [adrotate banner=”5″]

Lee Kwang-soo Is In The House!

As the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge is no stranger to many of those who attended, the real star of the event was truly the Korean superstar, Lee Kwang-soo. Almost a thousand of his fans screamed and mobbed him as he joined the Samsung Malaysia team in launching the Galaxy S7 edge smartphone. Check it out!

Samsung Malaysia also reserved 100 units of the Galaxy S7 edge smartphones in a special sale earlier in the morning. They came with an exclusive ticket to meet and greet Lee Kwang-soo, and get his autograph!

Somehow, I managed to snag one of these tickets! Lucky me!

Lee Kwang-soo was a really nice guy. Even though his handlers kept insisting that we are not allowed to take photos with him, he readily offered to snap photos with his fans.

Email Snafu In Second Galaxy S7 edge Pre-Order

The second Samsung Galaxy S7 edge pre-order was a smashing success. Even more successful than the first pre-order, by all indications. Even though the second pre-order had less discount and fewer freebies than the first pre-order, Samsung sold twice as many Galaxy S7 edge smartphones in 1/3rd the time – 2,000 in 1 hour, instead of 1,000 in 3 hours!

In the first pre-order, successful customers got a shock when they received their confirmation email with the title of “Samsung Gear S2 Pre-order”. But the email contents were correct, so the reuse of the Samsung Gear S2 pre-order email template only resulted in some chuckles.

The second pre-order also has its own email snafu, but this time, it’s far, FAR more serious. Take a look for yourself and see if you can spot the problem :

Did you figure it out? Take a second or third look, if you must. It’s obvious, but you would be surprised how many people miss it the first time around. 😀

[adrotate banner=”5″]

Will Samsung Honour This Email Snafu?

If you haven’t figured it out yet, Samsung reused the email template from the first Galaxy S7 edge pre-order. They corrected the title but left everything in the content unchanged.

This is a BIG problem because the first pre-order offers a 20% discount, a complimentary 128 GB microSD card and an extra year of warranty, while the second pre-order only offers a smaller 15% discount and a complimentary 64 GB microSD card, with no warranty extension.

Those who received the first pre-order email wrongly are now asking – will Samsung Malaysia honour the contents of their confirmation email?

We just reached out to Samsung Malaysia, and will update you on what their decision is on this issue.

But even if they are unable to honour the admittedly wrong contents of these second batch emails, those who succeeded in the second pre-order should be happy that they are getting a great deal. It is still better than paying full price for the Galaxy S7 edge without any freebie, right? 😀

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Pre-Order Chaos

If you are not up and awake, you have just missed the biggest tech offer this week – the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Pre-Order. Samsung fans who waited up in the wee hours of the morning will not only get to be amongst the first 1,000 people in Malaysia to own the Galaxy S7 edge, they will enjoy an incredible 20% discount off the retail price, an extra year of warranty plus a free 128 GB microSD card!

Samsung set 5 whole days for the pre-order, but frankly, we expected the Galaxy S7 edge pre-order to sell out within hours, and it looks like we would be right. Right after the stroke of midnight when the Galaxy S7 edge pre-order mini-site was activated, it has been hammered so hard, it was impossible for us to even load the registration page properly.

In fact, it is now just past 2 am and we still have not been able to completely load the registration page.

Update @ 2016-03-07 : Samsung has just announced an extension of the pre-order campaign, with a new deal. Check it out!

Some People Succeeded

Our friend, Tc Pun, somehow managed to complete the process and pre-order his Galaxy S7 edge at about 1 am. His friend also made it about 15 minutes later. They had to use Telerik Fiddler to do it though. It pays to be a techie! 😀

What’s really funny though is that when he received the pre-order confirmation by email, it was titled as the Samsung Gear S2 Pre-order… 😀

Looks like someone at Samsung Malaysia reused the Samsung Gear S2 pre-order email template and forgot the change the title… Oh well, at least the email contents are correct! 😀

Sold Out!

As of 8:30 am, we can confirm that Samsung Malaysia sold all 1,000 Galaxy S7 edge smartphones they reserved for this pre-order. They probably sold out hours ago but we didn’t wait up to check! 😀

* From the comments of disgruntled customers who failed to register themselves for the pre-order, it looks like the entire pre-order sold out at around 3 am.

So we were right that the Galaxy S7 edge smartphones would sell out in hours, not 5 days as allocated by Samsung Malaysia. That said, maybe they will extend the offer, or introduce a different offer? We will find out soon enough! 🙂

Why Samsung Pay Outperforms Apple Pay & Android Pay

Bloomberg recently reported that Samsung Pay has less than half the users of Apple Pay5 million versus 12 million. That puts it on the same level with Android Pay, which is frankly impressive in its own right. However, the chart below does not tell the whole story.

Apple Pay vs Android Pay and Samsung Pay | Credit : Bloomberg

Apple Pay has so many more users because they had a year-long head start over its two rivals. If we consider how long they were in the market, Samsung Pay and Android Pay signed up an average of a million users per month. Apple Pay, on the other hand, averaged 706,000 new users per month.

That means, both Android Pay and Samsung Pay are growing 42% faster than Apple Pay.

Why Samsung Pay Did So Well

Samsung Pay only worked with the 5 Samsung Galaxy devices during the survey (the newly announced Galaxy S7 and S7 edge do not count). Yet, they managed to sign up as many users as Android Pay, and sign new users 42% faster than Apple Pay.

That is likely due to the fact that Samsung Pay is easier to implement than both Apple Pay and Android Pay. Samsung Pay works with the old magnetic stripe terminals as well as the newer NFC payment terminals. Apple Pay and Android Pay, on the other hand, only works with NFC payment terminals.

In other words, Samsung Pay works with any credit card terminal anywhere, while Apple Pay and Android Pay will only work at retailers that have upgraded to the new NFC terminals.

Samsung Pay Demonstration

At the recently-held Samsung Forum 2016, we were given an exclusive briefing and demonstration of Samsung Pay. Check out just how easy it is to pay using Samsung Pay. This is why Samsung will have an easier time driving its adoption over their two rivals.

The only downside with Samsung Pay is that it is limited to Samsung’s top-of-the-line Galaxy smartphones. If Samsung adds support for their other smartphones with NFC chips, their adoption would probably be much higher. Here are the 7 Samsung Galaxy smartphones that support Samsung Pay :

In H2 of this year, consumers in Australia, Brazil, Spain, Singapore and the United Kingdom will be able to try out Samsung Pay on their Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

First Gear VR Experience With Samsung Galaxy S7 edge

At the sneak peek of the new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone yesterday, we were also given the opportunity to try out the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge with the Gear VR Consumer Edition virtual reality headset. In fact, Samsung took us (virtually) to the Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona, Spain, through seven 3D videos.

If you are wondering, this is exactly the same Samsung Gear VR Consumer Edition (SM-R322) that was launched on the 20th of November 2015. Although it was officially designed for the Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 edge / S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5, it appears that they had already planned to make it compatible with the new Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge smartphones as well.

The Samsung Gear VR Consumer Edition (Amazon) is the improved version of the Gear VR Innovator Edition (Amazon). It not only supports more devices, it also comes with an improved touchpad on the right side of the headset. Another improvement is the addition of a cutout in the Gear VR frame to allow the insertion of a headphone jack. This allows for a more immersive experience.

If you look closely at the lower left corner of Gear VR’s front, you will see the labels next to the adjustment locks that this is the Gear VR Consumer Edition (Amazon) originally released for the Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 edge / S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5.

Incidentally, the Consumer Edition of the Samsung Gear VR is 19 percent lighter than the original Innovator Edition, and features better foam cushioning.

Performance

[adrotate banner=”4″]The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge unit you see paired with the Gear VR Consumer Edition (Amazon) in this article is an engineering sample. So there were some glitches in getting Oculus VR to start up. For some reason, it loaded Google search with the keyboard instead.

But once we “fixed” the problem, it performed exactly like the Note5 did with the Gear VR Consumer Edition. That’s no surprise since both devices have similar sized screens (5.5″ vs. 5.7″) with the same resolution – 1440 x 2560.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Smartphone Revealed

This morning, Tech ARP was invited to an exclusive media preview of the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone. This is a sneak peek as the Galaxy S7 edge will only be available in Malaysia from the 18th of March 2016 onwards.

Check out the exclusive details we squeezed from Samsung Malaysia, and take a look at the video and pictures we took at the event!

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Revealed

Samsung Malaysia’s Mobile Division Product Manager, Go Benn Lee, kicked off the big reveal with a presentation on what’s new in the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone. Check it out!

Later, we managed to browbeat him into answering some questions about the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. Check out what we found out :

One Model, Three Colours

Samsung Malaysia will only bring in a single model – the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge with 32 GB of internal storage. The Galaxy S7 edge will come in three colours though – Black Onyx, Silver Titanium and Gold Platinum.

They made this decision based on the popularity of the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 edge+. They also chose not to offer larger storage capacities because the Galaxy S7 edge comes with a microSD slot, which supports up to 200 GB of additional storage.

This does not mean that the Samsung Galaxy S7 will never make it to Malaysia. That is still a possibility.

It’s The Exynos Processor

[adrotate banner=”4″]Samsung is using two different processors for the Galaxy S7 edge – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, and their own Exynos 8890. Samsung revealed earlier that international versions of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge would use the Snapdragon 820 processor, while those sold in South Korea will feature the Samsung Exynos 8890 instead.

Today, we can confirm that the Galaxy S7 edge smartphones to be sold here in Malaysia will feature Samsung’s own Exynos 8890 processor. In other words, we will be getting the South Korean model.

Pre-Order & Special Bundle

Samsung Malaysia is preparing a pre-order opportunity, which could possibly coincide with a media event scheduled for the evening of March 17th. We will keep you updated on this.

You may be wondering if Samsung is going to throw in a free Gear VR headset with every Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone. Well, we tried our best to weasel out something… anything… but they were very coy. They would neither acknowledge or deny that such a bundle would be forthcoming. They however assured us that it will be “a very special offer” that will make us go “WOW!” 😀

The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge

The new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge smartphone has a 5.5″ display but looks and feels like a 5″ device. This is due to the virtually bezel-less edges. And if you loved the Galaxy S6 edge’s curves, you will love the dual curved edges of the Galaxy S7 edge.

The Galaxy S7 edge retains the Galaxy S6 edge’s front camera, but uses the 12 megapixel Sony IMX260 sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus capability, paired with a much faster (brighter) f/1.7 lens. What this means is not only better low-light performance, but near-instantaneous focusing in the dark or with moving subjects.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge‘s  other two “killer features” would be its IP68 dust- and water-resistance rating, and its Hybrid SIM capability. You can take the Galaxy S7 for a swim at an instant – there is no need to prepare it in any way. Just jump right in! Too bad the Galaxy S7 edge does NOT support USB-C. That would have been another nice feature to have.

It also comes with two SIM slots, the second of which doubles as a microSD slot that supports up to 200 GB of additional storage. In other words, you can either use a second SIM card, or a microSD card, not both. Still, this is an improvement over the Galaxy S6 edge for many users.

The Galaxy S7 edge also features an “Always-on Display“, which shows basic information like the time, date, battery life and notifications at all times. This allows you to check those information at a glance. The Galaxy S7 edge will also feature an improved Edge Screen, which now offers more options and twice the width for more widgets / shortcuts.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge supports fast charging in both wired and wireless mode, just like the Samsung Galaxy Note5. But you may not need that as much because the Galaxy S7 edge comes with a large 3,600 mAh battery1,000 mAh (38.5%) more than the 2,600 mAh battery in the Galaxy S6 edge!

To top it off, Samsung listened to our complaints of the Galaxy S6 edge getting really hot, especially when taking photos and recording videos. They somehow managed to squeeze in a heatpiped cooler to better dissipate heat from the internal components.

Excited? So Are We!

We can’t wait to get our hands on the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge! If you are eager to get one yourself, be sure to check back because we will have more details and coverage for you. A media event has already been scheduled for the evening and night of March 17th. You can count on us to be there. If you want live updates, make sure you like our Facebook page!

HTC One A9 & Four Other Smartphones Revealed

Last night, HTC invited us to an exclusive Chinese New Year dinner, which also doubled as an official launch event. Their tagline for the event was “Ready to bring your A_ game?“.

They also cheekily presented marshmallows for those of us who are still licking our lollipops… No guesses for what operating system the new HTC smartphone will be running! 😀

Of course, anyone who has kept up on tech rumours would have known that HTC was going to launch the HTC One A9 smartphone. What we didn’t know was that they would also reveal another four HTC smartphones at the event as well!

Neither did we expect such fantastic entertainment from our fellow members of the media. Be sure to catch the video we took of our friends with hidden talents!

HTC One A9 & Four Other Smartphones Revealed

Just after the tossing of the yee sang for luck in the new year, the star of the event was “served” to us on a silver platter. Presenting the new HTC One A9!

Manu Seth, Senior Director, Head of Marketing for South Asia, then took the stage to talk about the HTC One A9, before revealing the details of the other four new HTC smartphones – the HTC One ME, HTC Desire 828, HTC Desire 728 and the HTC Desire 626.

Before we could get our hands on the new HTC smartphones, it was time for some fun and games. Check out this video we took of some talented members of the media in a dance-off contest!

Seriously, our friends have hidden talents! Who would have expected them to dance so well? 😀

Okay, entertainment is over. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty details of the five new HTC smartphones!

Microsoft Malaysia’s Windows 10 Media Treasure Hunt

On the 3rd of February, Microsoft Malaysia organised a treasure hunt for the Malaysian media. It was a way to familiarise the participants with the Surface Pro 4 and Lumia 950, as well as a great way to start 2016 with a bang!

The Windows 10 Treasure Hunt

Microsoft Malaysia began the treasure hunt by briefing all five teams (teams Blue, Green, Grey, Red, and Yellow) about the key features of two Windows 10 devices – the Surface Pro 4 and Lumia 950. Innovative characteristics such as Windows Hello, Edge annotation, superior camera optics, and multitasking functions were used by each team to finish their respective challenges.

Each team had to complete six challenges at six stations, with the help of the Microsoft Senior Leadership Team (SLT) – Michal Golebiewski (Chief Marketing & Operations Officer) and Bruce Howe (General Manager of Consumer Channel Group). After collecting their respective survival kits, containing a Surface Pro 4, Lumia 950, cereal bars and an energy drink, the teams were off to attempt their first challenge.

Participants attending the Windows 10 Treasure Hunt briefing at Coffee Planet

Each station had a particular challenge that required either the Surface Pro 4 or Lumia 950 to complete. Station one was at Avenue K, and the challenge was to sing along with buskers on a song unknown to each team. As an answer to this challenge, the Surface Pro 4 was used as a multitasking device, activating its snap assist function, allowing each team to refer to the song lyrics and the karaoke video of the song simultaneously. The SLT joined in the fun, belting their lungs out as well!

At Station two (at Break Out, Avenue K), the challenge was to take a picture of a hidden message in low light conditions. For this challenge, the Lumia 950 flung into action with its 20 MP Carl Zeiss optics, allowing each team to identify the message with a breeze, even in low light situations.

Team Green at the Microsoft Authorized Reseller Store attempting the last minute challenge

Station three was a security challenge, where teams were required to find the right Bryan. The catch was that there were actually four similarly dressed individuals, of which one was required to unlock a Surface Pro 4 with Windows Hello – an inherent biometric security feature within Windows 10. Windows Hello successfully identified the right Bryan 100% of the time, across all five teams. Of course, more fun and physical activities ensued in the process.

Team Blue at Avenue K attempting the Windows Hello challenge

The next challenge at Station four, was a game of vocabulary. It required each team to go to a DoGreatThings microsite and with the use of nothing but a digital pen, to solve a crossword puzzle and share their answers via e-mail. The Surface Pro 4’s sensitive 12.3-inch PixelSense display with 3:2 aspect ratio was ideal for comfortable viewing and note-taking, allowing each team to use the digital pen and Surface as if it were the real thing.

Team Grey at Aseana Cafe attempting the annotation challenge

Each team would then have to make their way to Station five (Microsoft Authorized Reseller (MAR) Store at Suria KLCC) for their next challenge. This challenge aimed at replicating real-life working scenarios, with tight deadlines. It required each team to proofread a PowerPoint presentation with the use of the Lumia 950. A cool and nifty Windows 10 feature, called Continuum, allowed each team’s Lumia phone to literally work like a PC. With the use of an additional docking station available at the MAR Store, each team was able to complete their proofreading task in under 15 minutes! Now that’s what you call productivity.

Team Green at the Microsoft Authorized Reseller Store attempting the last minute challenge

At Station six, also known as the Bonus Round, was a test of wits. A levitating Master Yoda was present to guide each team to find a similarity between a picture he was holding, and the Surface Pro 4. After completing the challenge, participants were then told where lunch would be served.

The treasure hunt ended with all teams, albeit exhausted but thoroughly engaged, having lunch with both Michal and Bruce at Tujo Bar-serrie & Grill, where both the team and individual winners were announced. With a full belly, and an enhanced experience with Microsoft’s Surface and Lumia devices, each team left the treasure hunt with an enriched understanding of Windows 10 and greater sense of camaraderie.

Tech ARP Server Upgrade In Progress

We apologise for the recent server issues. Even though we migrated Tech ARP to its own server last month, it looks like we have already outgrown it! We will have to temporarily put our galactic conquest on hold until our server upgrade is complete. 😀

Over the last 3 months, we have seen a 25% increase in Tech ARP’s readership and a 19% boost in our Alexa rankings. Thank you for supporting our work! 😀

[adrotate banner=”4″]Our new SSD-cached server originally served both Tech ARP and The Rojak Pot, but the massive traffic on both websites caused our new server ran out of memory and crashed several times. So on January 3, 2016, we gave each site its own server.

Now, it’s time to upgrade Tech ARP to a new faster server with full SSD storage. However, this will mean we have to take Tech ARP out of commission for an hour or so.

We apologise for the inconvenience while we get both Tech ARP and The Rojak Pot faster servers. Then we can resume our galactic conquest! 😀

Help Fund Our Server Upgrade

If you would like to help fund our work and server upgrade, please feel free to send us a donation! Thank you kindly! 😀

Official Rules & Instructions For The Forum Contest

You will need to be a registered member of the Tech ARP Forums so if you have not registered earlier, you will need to register before you can participate. Don’t worry – registration is FREE and the process is very simple!

[adrotate banner=”4″]Note : Please tell your friends to identify you as their Referral during the registration process so you will get credit for it.

After registering your account, all you need to do is participate in the Tech ARP Forums during the contest week. Every post you make (whether it’s a new thread, or a reply to someone else) gives you a chance to win the prize of the week. The more posts you make, the more you are likely to win.

At the end of the contest month, we will randomly select 10 Potential Winners from the pool of qualifying posts or referrals (of which there could be multiple instances of the same contestant), which will go into the Contest Pool.

Official Rules & Instructions For The Facebook Contest

You will need to have a Facebook account to participate, so if you have not registered your account in Facebook, you will need to do so before participating.

  1. Once you have a Facebook account, log into your Facebook account and go to the Tech ARP Facebook page.
  2. Click on the Like button to like the Tech ARP Facebook page (if you have not already done so).
  3. Scroll down the Tech ARP Facebook page and if you see any article or news post you like, and Share them on your wall, or Like them, or post a comment.
  4. That’s it! It’s that simple. Just doing that qualifies you for the contest of the week.
  5. To qualify for the next and following weeks’ contest, just make sure you come back to our Facebook page every week, and like or share some of our news posts or articles!

At the end of each contest month, we will randomly select 10 Potential Winners from all those who Liked our Facebook page, and Shared, Liked or Commented in at least one of our news posts or articles, which will go into the Contest Pool. The more likes and comments you have, the more likely you are to win. Please note that we count all likes and comments, even if they are of older posts, or those that you liked or shared before this contest.

Important Note : Due to the number of fake accounts set up expressedly for the purpose of “gaming” these contests, we will be using the number of Friends as a multiplier (adjusted with a divider*). That means your Likes and Shares will be multiplied by the number of Friends associated with your Facebook account when determining the “final number” of entries to be entered into the Contest Pool.

Also, as a point of clarification – each Like and each Share will be treated separately. If you liked and shared a post, that will be considered equivalent to two likes or two shares. If you have 10 Friends associated with your account, you will receive 2 x 10 = 20 entries.

* A divider may be applied to avoid a single participant with thousands of fans from automatically winning all of the contests.

Official Rules & Instructions For The Article Reading Contest

You will need a valid email account for this contest, because your emails will be considered as proof of participation :

  1. All you need to do is browse or read our articles, reviews and editorials and look out for the icon on the right.
  2. When you see the icon, either take a screenshot OR copy the URL of the page in which you saw the icon. There may be more than one icon placed in the pages of every article / review.
  3. Email us the screenshot or the URL of the page with the icon.
  4. You can accumulate several screenshots and URLs in a single email. They will be counted separately for the purpose of determining a Potential Winner.

At the end of each contest month, we will randomly select 10 Potential Winners from all those who sent us qualifying emails. The more URLs or screenshots you send us, the more likely you are to win. The list of Potential Winners will go into the Contest Pool.

Determining The Winners

At the end of each contest month, there will be 30 Potential Winners in the Contest Pool, consisting of :

  • 10 Potential Winners from the Tech ARP Forums contest
  • 10 Potential Winners from the Tech ARP Facebook contest
  • 10 Potential Winners from the Tech ARP Article Reading contest

The final prize winners will then be randomly drawn from the Contest Pool.

There may be multiple instances of the same Potential Winner in the Contest Pool, due to the fact that some participants may be more active / luckier than others.

[adrotate banner=”4″]If the same person wins two (or more) prizes in that particular contest month, he/she will receive the Dell Portable HDD with the highest value, and another winner will be randomly selected from the Contest Pool.

The results of this contest will be posted in this page, so please make sure you check back often. Some prizes have a short time limit and must be redeemed quickly. We will not be responsible if those prizes “expire” because you take too long to respond.

Please also note that if you do not contact us within 14 days of the announcement of your winning, your prize will forfeited and offered to other contestants in a new contest cycle.

2016 Samsung SUHD TV Models Revealed

At the recent Samsung Forum 2016, we were given the first look at the 2016 Samsung SUHD TV models to hit the market in the coming months. Join us as we share with you the videos and pictures we took of these new Samsung SUHD TV models.

Samsung KS9000 SUHD TV

Samsung’s flagship SUHD TV in 2016 will be the Samsung KS9000 series, which tops out with the 65″ Samsung 65KS9500. This series is the first Samsung curved TV to feature what Samsung calls a “bezel-less” display. Of course, there is still a thin bezel, so it’s not a true “bezel-less” display. It just appears bezel-less from the optimal viewing distance.

Check out this video we took of the 65″ Samsung KS9000 SUHD TV :

Like all of Samsung 2016 SUHD TVs, the Samsung KS9000 series uses a 10-bit quantum dot display, with a 1,000 nits HDR (high dynamic range) capability. Samsung also introduced a 360° design philosophy, in which the TV is designed to look elegant at all angles – even from behind.

honor Band Z1

26 January 2016 – honor today launched its first smartband, the honor Band Z1 featuring a deceptively simple design paired with advanced and intelligent technology. The Band Z1 is the perfect accessory for active and trendy users on-the-go, thanks to its subdued and understated look.

Elegant and refined look

Inspired by Scandinavian minimalism that takes inspiration from nature, practicality, and appearance – the surface of the Band Z1 is devoid of any buttons, which in turn accentuates the simplicity of its circular surface.

To create the tough yet refined look that is the Band Z1, steel is used as its main material. A combination of CNC machining, hand polishing and sand polishing techniques were used to achieve the stylish finish. It is also scratch resistant and durable enough to withstand your active lifestyle Additionally, the beautiful strap makes it elegant enough to be worn for a night out with friends.

Convenient Notifications

The 1.06 inch 128 x 128 pixels resolution touchscreen on the Band Z1 features a touch-sensitive button-free operation. Access your notifications, alarms and the clock with just a simple swipe. Plus, the soft-lit PMOLED screen is unique as it is vivid enough when in a darkened area – such as a cinema or a club – yet is legible enough in sunlit locations as well.

With its large display and ample memory, the honor Band Z1 supports caller display and allows you to read messages and emails. It currently supports English, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Japanese.

Accurate health tracking

Thanks to the high accuracy G-sensor, as well as honor’s advanced algorithm software, the honor Band Z1 can automatically detect and log your walking, running or sports activities accurately. The data recorded includes number of steps taken, calorie consumption, exercise time and distance – all this without the need to install any app on the smartphone.

In addition, the capacitive sensor and Polysomnography (PSG) can intelligently distinguish between wake and sleep, as well as taking users’ light and deep sleep states. Thanks to the design of the Band Z1, it will not leave any compression marks on the wrists as you sleep since it fits the curvature of the wrist perfectly.

Premium and smart functions in one

[adrotate banner=”4″]The bracelet strap material is stain-resistant and comes in three different colours – Classic White, Classic Black, and Cream. Thanks to precision design and manufacturing, the honor Band is IP68 certified, making it dust-proof and waterproof to a depth of 1.5 m

Alcatel Flash 2 Upgrades Announced

Yesterday, we were invited to an Alcatel media briefing on the future roadmap of the Alcatel Flash 2 smartphone we reviewed earlier. If you recall, we pegged it as a hidden gem that delivers a whole lot of features and capabilities at a highly affordable price. Well, Alcatel just announced a bunch of Flash 2 upgrades!

In this video, Yogi Babria, the Flash E-Commerce Operations Director, revealed the new Alcatel Flash 2 upgrades in both hardware and software. Check it out!

Hardware Flash 2 Upgrades

Alcatel will offer two new back covers – a semi-translucent Mica White back cover, and a Rose Gold back cover. These back covers will be sold offline in stores, and will offer users the ability to change the look of their Alcatel Flash 2 smartphones.

Alcatel will also extend the Flash 2‘s mobile photography capabilities with the introduction of two lens upgrades.

The Flash 2 lens kit will consist of a fisheye lens and a macro lens, offering greater creative opportunities with the Alcatel Flash 2 smartphone.

The new lenses require the installation of a new back cover with a new lens cap. The lens cap not only ensures that the lenses are firmly attached, it also ensures maximum image quality using the two lenses.

Software Flash 2 Upgrades

[adrotate banner=”4″]On the software front, the biggest news is Alcatel’s announcement of an Android Marshmallow upgrade for the Flash 2 smartphone. They expect the Marshmallow update to be ready by March. This rather early upgrade is thanks to the fact that the Alcatel Flash 2 uses pure Android, instead of a customised Android operating system.

You don’t have to wait until March for a software upgrade though. Coming up next week is a major firmware upgrade that will greatly improve the Flash 2‘s photographic capabilities. It will improve the autofocus accuracy in selfies, as well as its macro performance. So watch out for the upgrade next week!

The winner of our Alcatel Flash 2 Giveaway Contest won’t have to worry though. We will upgrade it to Android Marshmallow before we ship it out! 😀

If you have no idea what the fuss is about, read our Alcatel Flash 2 Smartphone Review. Find out why we called it a hidden gem!

OPPO F1 – Tailored For Selfie Supremacy

The OPPO F1 features an 8MP front-facing camera with a wide f/2.0 aperture lens and a 1/4-inch sensor, allowing for 44% more light to enter the camera than an f/2.4 aperture lens, and resulting in shots that are 30% clearer than ones taken with an ordinary 5 MP front-facing camera. The F1 also offers OPPO’s ‘Beautify 3.0’ that removes blemishes, highlights a subject’s features and includes 3 different beautify modes along with 8 filters.

Meanwhile, to make snapping selfies in low-light conditions a seamless experience, F1 users can turn on the patented ‘Screen Flash’ feature to ensure natural-looking shots. With Screen Flash, faces will always come through bright, clear and natural. In addition, the OPPO F1 can snap selfies using hand gestures and spoken commands. By opening a palm in front of the camera, or simply by saying “Cheese!” users can activate an automatic selfie with an adjustable countdown.

Snappy performance is one more key factor in the F1’s outstanding user experience. The F1 sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 series Octa-core processor with 3GB RAM and 16GB ROM, which can be expanded by 128GB, providing abundant space for photo storage and ensuring multitasking fluency.

In addition to the outstanding selfie features, the F1 also offers a great overall photography experience. The F1 sports a 13 MP rear camera with an ISOCELL sensor for reducing pixel noise. The camera also features phase detection autofocus (PDAF), delivering a focus time of just 0.1 seconds, equivalent to the performance of an SLR camera. Meanwhile, the anti-shake optimization feature enables the camera to automatically select the clearest image from a huge buffer of image data the moment the shutter button is pressed.

The camera is backed by OPPO’s own Pure Image 2.0+ camera platform, offering a huge range of filters and plug-ins for everyone from the aspiring photographer to the meme-making savant. Users can also experiment with Ultra-HD, which creates 50 MP photos composed of four consecutive photos, or other eye-popping features like Super Macro, HDR, Double Exposure, Slow Shutter, Super GIF and more.

OPPO F1 – Born for beauty

OPPO believes beautiful photos need a beautiful phone to match. The 60-degree angles of the F1’s two eye-catching chamfered edges are the result of precise calculations and numerous rounds of testing to ensure an unbeatable hand feel without skimping on any of the visual impact.

Meanwhile, the OPPO’s designers scoured three countries in search of the finest aluminum alloy for the back panel. After putting the Japanese material they chose through close to 40 polishing procedures, the designers were able to make good on their vision of giving the F1 a texture like “metal silk”.

The F1 has a 5-inch display and is a mere 7.25 mm thick. Its thinness, together with its slight 134-gram weight, assures that the phone feels just right. With its 2.5D Corning® Gorilla® Glass 4 Screen, twice as strong as ordinary glass, the OPPO F1 is extra scratch-resistant, making for a phone that’s both durable and attractive to the touch.
