ASUS ROG Mothership Preview : Portable Desktop Gaming?

ASUS just launched the ROG Mothership, a portable desktop gaming computer with features borrowed from gaming desktops and gaming laptops.

Find out if the ASUS ROG Mothership is a good replacement for mobile gamers, or just a solution looking for a problem…

ASUS ROG Mothership (GZ700GX) Key Features

ASUS appears to believe there is a market for portable desktop gaming. Specifically gamers who want to enjoy desktop gaming, and are willing to lug a man-portable system on their holidays and trips.

So the ROG Mothership is designed with desktop gaming components, in a form factor that looks like a laptop but heavy enough you would be a fool to use it on an actual lap…

ASUS ROG Mothership Preview - Portable Desktop Gaming

Desktop Gaming Performance

The ROG Mothership is powered by desktop-grade gaming components like the Intel Core i9-9980HK, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080, and up to 64 GB of DDR4-2666 memory.

The Intel Core i9-9980HK is factory-overclocked to 4.7 GHz, while the GeForce RTX 2080 GPU is boosted up to 1880 MHz with a 200 watt TDP, with its GDDR6 memory clocked at 7.2 GHz.

Desktop-Class Cooling

To keep all that cool, it has FOUR heatsinks, which ASUS proudly tells us has a total of 375 fins, and 8 heat pipes. INSANE.

Triple SSD Storage

The ROG Mothership also comes with three 512 GB SSDs for storage, all combined in RAID 0 for a crazy-fast transfer rate of 8.7 GB/s.

Of course, three drives in RAID 0 triples the risk of losing all of your data… but who wants to keep your data safe forever, right?

ROG Mothership Quad Speakers

The ROG Mothership comes with four front speakers. They are powered by a Hi-Res Audio-certified ESS Sabre HiFi DAC that delivers up to 24-bit audio, at 192 kHz.

Man-Portable, Not Mobile

The ROG Mothership boasts an aluminium unibody design, with a detachable keyboard. It even looks like a laptop.

However, it’s chunky at almost 3 cm thick… and more importantly, freaking heavy at 4.8 kg. This is why they are calling it a portable gaming computer, not a gaming laptop.

Dual Power Adaptors

The ROG Mothership requires A LOT of power. That’s why it comes with not one, but TWO, chunky 280 watt power adaptors.

We hope ASUS will consider bundling the Mothership with a suitcase to make it easier to transport the system on trips.
