AMD is on the roll, announcing more supercomputing wins for their 2nd Gen EPYC processors, including four supercomputers in the top 50 list, and ten in the top 500!

The 2nd Gen AMD EPYC family of server processors are based on the AMD Zen 2 microarchitecture and fabricated on the latest 7 nm process technology.

According to AMD, they offer up to 90% better integer performance and up to 79% better floating-point performance, than the competing Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 processor. For more details :

3rd Gen AMD EPYC Supercomputers

AMD also announced that two universities will deploy Dell EMC PowerEdge servers powered by the upcoming 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processors.

Indiana University

Indiana University will deploy Jetstream 2 – an eight-petaflop distributed cloud computing system, powered by the upcoming 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processors.

Jetstream 2 will be used by researchers in a variety of fields like AI, social sciences and COVID-19 research.

Purdue University

Purdue University will deploy Anvil – a supercomputer powered by the upcoming 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processors, for use in a wide range of computational and data-intensive research.

AMD EPYC will also power Purdue University’s community cluster “Bell”, scheduled for deployment in the fall.

Automotive KasperskyOS : What Is It?

Modern vehicles are complex systems, which makes it hard to manage the security of its components.

KasperskyOS for automotive ECUs combines a secure microkernel operating system, with a security policy enforcement engine (Kaspersky Security System), and a trusted channel encrypted framework.

It is designed to secure onboard systems and communications, ensuring safer OTA updates, fleet management and safer autonomous driving.

 

KasperskyOS Integration Into AVL ADAS ECU

The new AVL Software and Functions GmbH (AVL SFR) ADAS ECU features two high-performance SoCs (system-on-a-chip), and a safety controller..

This new ECU platform also supports Controller Area Network, and automotive Ethernet standards, allowing for secure communications between devices in the vehicle – including cameras and LIDARs.

The integration of KasperskyOS into the ECU guarantees that undeclared functionality – either unnoticed at launch, or inserted through system updates – cannot be exploited. This is especially important in the safety of autonomous vehicles.

All interactions between electronic components is controlled by the Kaspersky Security System, the security policy engine within KasperskyOS. It monitors the launch of processes, as well as communications between those components and the operating system.

This new ADAS ECU by AVL SFR is ready for prototyping projects by OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers.

 

Kaspersky Automotive Adaptive Platform for KasperskyOS

Kaspersky is also a new associate partner of AUTOSAR, a consortium aimed at developing mutual standards for automotive software architecture.

To that effect, they developed a software development kit (SDK) called Kaspersky Automotive Adaptive Platform.

With this SDK, AVL SFR can develop applications for automated and even driverless vehicles – such as delivering auto-piloting features, controlling safety systems and monitoring their health.

This set of libraries also allows for other software to be adopted, which follow AUTOSAR Adaptive requirements, and work on KasperskyOS without additional changes.

Kaspersky Automotive Adaptive Platform is ready to be delivered and AVL SFR is showcasing its auto-piloting application to several automotive customers.

World of Buzz : Stop Feeding Content Regurgitation Websites!

A former World of Buzz writer just exposed really goes on inside that infamous clickbait website, and show us why we should stop feeding such content regurgitation websites.

 

World of Buzz : Who Are They?

World of Buzz claims to be Malaysia’s no. 1 social news website. It is basically a content farm, reposting content scraped from social media websites.

World of Buzz may not be as bad as The Coverage Bureau (which deserves a special mention for reposting old news!), but they are still pretty notorious for their scraped content.

They are part of Influasia, which also runs Lobak Merah, NOODOU, and Munch.

 

World of Buzz : Former Intern Tells All!

After World of Buzz got banned for a month on Reddit, one of their former writers wrote an expose on what really goes on behind the scenes.

This former writer for World of Buzz was an intern who worked there for four months, and shared evidence to back up his/her claim :

  • official documents
  • a campaign brief
  • emails with the founder
  • employment / onboarding emails

This was what he/she revealed on Reddit :

I was a former intern for 4 months in World of Buzz and am here to spill the tea on this heaping pile of crap they call a “news publication”.

Without revealing too much (am using a throw away account because I am afraid that somebody from Influasia lurking in this sub might be able to pinpoint who I am with my main account), I was a, so called, “content creator”. Only problem is I didn’t create content, I stole them. I was ordered by the bosses to basically rip off whatever I can find on Facebook in the morning when I reach the office.

Obviously, I didn’t join World of Buzz for its Pulitzer Prize winning news reporting. But I never knew how bad their ethics were until the first day I stepped into the office. On the first minute on the job, I was immediately told that I had a strict KPI to follow, 3-5 articles a day, and 1 video per day if you’re a video editor. If you remotely know how news reporting and video production works, you’ll know that this is practically impossible. Hence, why so many articles they publish are basically rip-offs of some other news source. The bosses didn’t care about validity and truth, all they cared was views and revenue.

 

World of Buzz : Stop Feeding Content Regurgitation Websites!

Clickbait websites like World of Buzz and The Coverage Bureau have long been detested by writers and content creators, but the fact is we, the READERS, are at fault.

We feed these websites, and encourage them to keep farming and regurgitating content from social media and other websites.

What we readers don’t understand is that content creation is HARD WORK.

It may take us just a few minutes to read an article that a writer probably spent several hours writing. And that’s not even counting hours spent in research and fact checking.

Do We Want To Be Donald Trump?

Unfortunately, people today have very short attention spans. The world is moving away from serious, in-depth pieces to short, easy-to-understand blurbs.

Even better if it’s just a picture or a short video clip. People will skip anything too long to read. They even created an acronym for that – TLDR : Too Long, Didn’t Read.

In essence, we are becoming more like Donald Trump, and less like Barack Obama.

Why Are Our Standards So Low?

And with thousands of websites targeting the same readers, the only way to grab our attention is to introduce shocking or scandalous articles, and it doesn’t matter if they are old, fake or misleading!

Why? Because most of us don’t even read beyond the title or first paragraph! And we certainly don’t care whether it’s true or accurate. We just click and share.

Because our standards are so low, we drive the demand for clickbait websites that regurgitate content without verification and fact-checking.

We Are So Entitled + Cheap

We are so entitled, we feel that content creators should not only give you articles and videos for free, they should not have those irritating advertisements.

So we install ad blockers. Why should they be allowed to run ads if the Internet is meant to be free? They should be lucky we even want to read what they write! /s

What readers don’t understand is that many websites do not get paid a single cent, unless you click on the advertisements in their articles or videos. Even those who get paid by views (impressions) are paid mere cents per thousand views!

That encourages them to churn out as much content as possible with as little effort possible. And the easiest and cheapest way to do that is to regurgitate (copy and paste) social media content.

Ultimately, we killed the media industry by making it unprofitable to create content, and created content regurgitating monsters like World of Buzz by making it profitable to just regurgitate content.

If we want things to change – we have to stop being so entitled and cheap.

Stop reading and sharing posts from media regurgitation websites, and start supporting websites that actually create content.

WhatsApp Payments : How Does It Work?

WhatsApp just rolled out digital payments in Brazil! It is a good look at what could eventually be rolled out across the world – WhatsApp Payments!

 

WhatsApp Payments : What Is It?

On 16 June 2020, WhatsApp started rolling out digital payments to their users and businesses in Brazil.

By leveraging the recently-announced Facebook Pay, it allows WhatsApp users to send money, or pay for their purchases, directly through the app.

It also allows WhatsApp Business users to receive money or payments for their products or services.

 

WhatsApp Payments : Is That The Official Name?

They did not reveal an official name, calling it either digital payments on WhatsApp or simply payments on WhatsApp.

It could become WhatsApp Pay, like the recently-launched Facebook Pay, or Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. Or it could be just Facebook Pay on WhatsApp.

But right now, for simplicity, we will use the placeholder name – WhatsApp Payments.

 

WhatsApp Payments : Cost + Limits

This is one of the first things people will want to know – is it FREE?

Well, it is free for WhatsApp users to send or receive money through WhatsApp, subject to these limits (for Brazil) :

  • Sending limit : 1000 BRL per transaction (approx. US$196 / £155 / S$272 / A$282 / RM 837)
  • Receiving limit : 20 transactions per day, or 5000 BRL per month (approx. US$977 / £775 / S$1361 / A$1412 / RM 4,181)

If you need to exceed that limit, you need to register for a WhatsApp Business account, which lets you accept unlimited payments, and credit card payments.

However, you will need to pay a flat 3.99% processing fee, irrespective of the payment sum.

In addition, WhatsApp insists that free transfers are strictly restricted to “personal transfers between friends and family”.

All businesses, even very small ones who do NOT exceed those limits, must also use WhatsApp Business and pay the 3.99% processing fee.

Otherwise, they risk the blocking of their personal account, if WhatsApp catches them receiving payments.

 

WhatsApp Payments : How Does It Work?

WhatsApp currently restricts access to their setup methods to users in Brazil, but from what we can tell – here is basically how WhatsApp Payments work.

Setting It Up The First Time

  1. Install WhatsApp and setup your WhatsApp account, if you have not already done so.
  2. Sign up for a Facebook Pay account, if you have not already done so.
  3. Create and verify your 6-digit Facebook Pay PIN.
  4. If you wish to use your fingerprint to authenticate payment, select the Use Fingerprint option.
  5. Key in your full legal first and last names and your CPF (identity card number)
  6. Add and verify at least one supported debit / debit-enabled combo card. You can add a credit card, but they can only be used to pay businesses.

To Make Payments On WhatsApp

  1. Open a chat with the person or business you wish to send money to.
  2. Tap the Attach (paperclip) icon, and select Payment.
  3. Key in the amount you wish to send.
  4. Authenticate the payment using the 6-digit Facebook Pay PIN or your fingerprint.
  5. The money will be transferred to the recipient, and you will both receive notifications in the chat window.

 

WhatsApp Payments : What Cards Are Supported?

Currently, WhatsApp will support these Visa / Mastercard debit or credit cards in Brazil :

  • Banco do Brasil
  • Nubank
  • Sicredi

 

WhatsApp Payments : How Secure Is It?

To assure everyone that their transactions are secure, WhatsApp listed these security and privacy steps :

  • Encryption between your phone and WhatsApp servers keeps your payment information secure.
  • Advanced data storage contains multiple layers of hardware and software protection.
  • Facebook Pay PIN protection and device biometrics adds extra security before sending money.
  • You can only send money from your WhatsApp account once you have provided the correct debit or credit card information and verified that you’re the authorized user.

GrabFood : Restaurant Availability Not Based On Commission!

GrabFood has responded officially to the allegations that they are turning off restaurant availability according to commission rates.

We also asked them some questions of our own, and will update the article with their replies when we get them!

 

GrabFood Restaurant Availability Controversy : What Happened?

In case you missed the recent kerfuffle, Burgertory – a gourmet burger restaurant – recently accused GrabFood of quietly switching off their restaurant’s availability because of their lower commission rate and sales bucket.

GrabFood Clarifies Restaurant Availability Controversy!

Sean Goh, the Managing Director of Grab Malaysia, issued this press release to address those allegations.

First and foremost, we would like to address the misconception: we do not turn off any of our stores / restaurants based on commissions.

Secondly, during rainy days, or when there is a lack of delivery riders in a specific area, we automatically reduce the service distance to ensure that we can maintain our service levels. Once the availability of delivery riders has recovered, our service distance would resume to normal levels. Occasionally, this may result in stores being unavailable in a nearby location, but available in a further location. For example, Customer A may reside in Bangsar but only see restaurants available in PJ, because we have insufficient delivery partners within the Bangsar area at that specific time.

Thirdly, during festive seasons where some of our restaurant partners may be closed, we practice a precautionary ‘temporary pause’ based on feedback from delivery riders who cite that a restaurant is closed despite being available in our app. This is done to ensure we do not disappoint customers who may continue to order from restaurants who have not updated their operating hours especially during the festive season. Such was the case experienced by this specific restaurant partner.

Prior to Raya holiday period, we sent out multiple communications (emails and SMS) to remind our restaurant partners to update operating hours and how to easily reactivate their restaurants in case of a ‘temporary pause’. In this case, we apologise that we were not attentive enough to ensure our partner received and acknowledged our communications.

We also note that information that was provided by our support staff was inaccurate, and apologise for the heartache and impact to our restaurant partner.

In view of the pandemic, we empathise with our merchant partners whose income has been affected due to the lockdown and restricted operating hours, and have had to rely only on delivery services to generate income. We are continuously looking at different initiatives to help drive demand for them, such as our Local Heroes and Grab Small-Biz Relief fund which this specific partner was also a part of, but will strive to balance this with the need to ensure we continue to uphold our highest service level.

We welcome any partner who has any queries on this to reach out to us directly so we can address your concerns.

 

Our Questions To GrabFood On This Controversy

We took the opportunity to ask GrabFood to clarify some points not covered in their press release. We will update this article with their answers when we get them.

  1. If bad weather or a lack of riders is an issue for a particular area, why was XXX restaurant marked as Unavailable, while other restaurants in the same vicinity are still Available?
  2. Is there a verification protocol for your rider reports? Does GrabFood call the merchant to verify that they are closed, after a rider reports it?
  3. The press release mentioned that GrabFood requested that restaurant partners update their operating hours. Did Burgertory or the other affected partners change their operating hours? If not, wouldn’t the operating hours remain the same?
  4. What is this Temporary Pause you refer to? Why is there a need for it, and what exactly was the procedure to reactivate their restaurant?
  5. The Raya holidays ended on 26 May 2020, but why are they still experiencing these issues?
  6. Is there any reason why GrabFood support staff would claim that availability of a restaurant is based on the commission level, if that was never the case?
  7. If the percentage of commission does not determine availability of the restaurant, does it affect prioritisation or visibility on GrabFood?
  8. Can GrabFood explain to our readers the difference in commission paid by the various restaurants, and what advantage they would have for paying GrabFood more commission, as opposed to less?
  9. Does sales bucket affect store availability? Does it also affect prioritisation or visibility on GrabFood?
  10. There are concerns that the commission levels are too high – some 25% to 35%? Can you tell us the exact commissions, and breakdown of what goes to the riders, and what goes to GrabFood?

GrabFood : How Burgertory Exposed Potential Discrimination!

Burgertory recently complained about how GrabFood was discriminating against them, in favour of larger businesses, or those who can pay them higher commissions.

Burgertory vs GrabFood : A Quick Primer

Burgertory – a small gourmet burger restaurant – had been using GrabFood for food deliveries for more than a year.

However, they recently noticed that GrabFood kept listing their business as unavailable, even though they were open for business.

Oddly, other restaurants in the vicinity were listed as available, just not Burgertory. When they complained to GrabFood, they were told that restaurant availability was turned on or off based on :

  • differences in commission rate – commission per order (25% to 35%)
  • differences in sales bucket – the value of each order

In other words, what you see on GrabFood is not what’s really available, but rather – which restaurant is more willing to pay them more commission, or can generate them more money.

Burgertory vs GrabFood : Some Updates!

First of all, Grab issued an official press release, stressing they do not turn restaurants off based on commission rate, but there was no mention of the sales bucket.

In a Facebook comment, they said that Burgertory was switched off the first time, because a GrabFood rider arrived and found them closed.

However, Burgertory pointed out that they kept Grab updated on their operating hours, and the rider arrived late – after they closed at 8 PM, and they were not alerted to the rider’s report, or that they were being switched off.

Burgertory also posted a separate update, sharing that Grab told them other merchants “has paid campaigns with them, and the difference in the discoverability radius is to help with the campaign ROI“.

 

GrabFood Discrimination : Bad For Almost Everyone

If what they were told is true, then GrabFood is intentionally turning off visibility to potential customers, in favour of higher profits from their merchants.

They are no longer acting as a neutral platform, but becoming a gatekeeper of sorts, giving those who can pay more, greater access to customers.

This is naturally bad for merchants, who already have to pay rather exorbitant commission – 25% to 35%. With such a discriminatory system, they will be forced to pay more just to stay visible on their platform.

This is also bad for customers, because our choices will be limited to what GrabFood decides makes them more money, not what’s actually available.

They would be essentially deciding who you should order your food from. And limiting you, not to those with better food ratings, but those who can pay them more.

Eventually, food prices will go way up, because merchants have to increase their GrabFood commissions to “stay visible”, and the additional cost will be added to your meals.

It’s not bad for everyone though. As long as customers remain ignorant, restaurants will be “encouraged” to pay GrabFood more money. It will work out great for GrabFood.

 

Burgertory vs GrabFood : What Happened?

Here are the details of the Burgertory vs GrabFood scandal. It started with a Facebook post by Burgertory on 4 June 2020 :

We are really disappointed and upset with the partnership with GrabFood.

We have been on-boarded to GrabFood for more than a year now, and we have been a cooperating partner.
Not until recently that we found out GrabFood has been very non-transparent in their assignation for restaurants availability in terms of radius.

We have been receiving a lot of complaints from our customers about GrabFood not showing the availability to deliver within reasonable distance, and we thought this is due to GrabFood system that is set to be within a specific distance in each area.

However what triggered the following case was on 26 May 2020, when we were alerted by our staff that GrabFood was unavailable for that day (imagine the sales that we lost, especially during this COVID period whereby businesses are struggling). Our sales from GrabFood on that day is ZERO. Upon checking, we realized other restaurants in same area is available but not us.

Hence we reached out to GrabFood merchant support via live chat and given the response that they off our restaurant availability from the back-end due to differences in commission rate by different restaurants, which means the restaurants which signed higher commission rate with them will get the priority and ‘be available in more places’. And they switched on our availability back after our call.

We were very upset and escalated to the manager. He then gave us another explanation that GrabFood will allow restaurants with larger ‘sales bucket’ to appear in more places. If that’s the case, it’s discrimination against small businesses, or any businesses that have menu selling items with lower price.

We gave feedback to them that this is not acceptable. And the manager promised to get back to us again after discussing with the team. It’s been a week and we hear nothing from them.

Yet it happened again today..! We realized they ‘turned off’ our restaurant again after checking from the app. Hence we wrote a complaint again, and same cycle happened… (same canned response, and they switched back on)

We are deeply disappointed with such partnership relationship. Does this mean that we have to always check if our restaurant has been hidden from the platform? These occurrences have broken the trust, we don’t know when their system will discriminate against us again and only switch back on after we found out and reach out to them each time. This is totally unfair to small and medium businesses.

After the public uproar, GrabFood quickly reached out to them the very next day to “discuss the issue”.

They clarified that Burgertory did not get “switched off” because of their lower commission, but did not explain why some restaurants get “switched off”, while others don’t.

We are truly humbled by the support from many of you and empathy shown by some of the business owners as well. Just want to give a quick update for those who has asked us about any update from GrabFood after the post yesterday:

They have reached out to us this afternoon to further discuss the issue, and clarified that the switch-off wasn’t due to commission factor, though we still don’t know the reason behind why certain restaurants in the same area are switched off unknowingly. We will continue to discuss and provide feedback to their team and hope that this will not happen again.

The reason why we decided to share the experience is to clarify what it might have impacted many of us as small & medium businesses. This is a year like no other and we empathise with all local businesses that are struggling to survive. We’re touched by some the responses we received yesterday, this is the time we strongly feel what brings Malaysians together. 

Apart from this, all of us from Burgertory team is really thankful for all the support to our business shown by our community, especially everyone of you, in what are the toughest of times. We always strive to sustain and provide a better F&B experience to all our customers. Hope all of us can stand strong together in unity through this tough times. Stay safe!

Fact Check : AMD Ryzen 4000 Will Use 5nm TSMC Process?

Is it true that the upcoming AMD Ryzen 4000 (Zen 3) desktop processors will be fabricated on the 5nm TSMC process, instead of 7nm as announced? Let’s find out!

 

AMD Ryzen 4000 : Zen 2 | Zen 3

At CES 2020, AMD launched the Ryzen 4000 family of mobile processors, which only just kicked off after delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

AMD is expected to introduce the Ryzen 4000 family of desktop processors, built on a newer Zen 3 microarchitecture, later this year.

AMD’s naming convention confuses people, because the Ryzen 4000 mobile processors are 3rd Gen Ryzen processors, while the upcoming Ryzen 4000 desktop processors will be 4th Gen Ryzen processors.

To make it easier for you to understand, we created this table to differentiate the two processor families.

DigiTimes : AMD Ryzen 4000 Will Use 5nm TSMC Process

A DigiTimes article, purportedly translated and posted by RetiredEngineer, claimed that the next-generation AMD Ryzen 4000 desktop processors, using the Zen 3 microarchitecture, will be fabricated on the brand-new 5nm process technology, instead of 7nm as announced earlier.

Rumor has it that AMD and TSMC have adjusted their foundry blueprints. The Ryzen 4000 series of desktop processors originally expected to launch at the end of 2020 will now use TSMC’s enhanced 5nm process (5nm Plus) instead of 7nm EUV, clearly demonstrating that AMD is now considered a tier-one customer for TSMC.

This new development confirms earlier news that TSMC, which only recently entered the 5nm era in April, is accelerating its enhanced 5nm process, bringing forward the mass production schedule to 4Q; and the enhanced 5nm Ryzen series processors will also put unprecedented pressure on Intel. Both TSMC and AMD declined to comment on rumors.

In the first quarter of 2020, AMD benefitted from the pandemic, which boosted demand due to the work-from-home economy. PC and server sales exceeded expectations; Ryzen and EPYC series processors shipments were strong, driving first quarter revenue up by 40% compared to the same period in 2019. Earnings were also better than market expectations.

Despite AMD’s conservative outlook for Q2, with revenue estimates between $1.75B and $1.95B, it is still up by 21% compared with the same period in 2019, and up 4% sequentially, still a good result despite the traditional low season for PCs and the impact of the pandemic.

As understood, AMD’s desktop and server shipments have strengthened across the board since the second half of 2019, and demand has exceeded market expectations. Even AMD themselves and TSMC were caught by surprise. This has led to significant improvements in AMD’s profitability. TSMC happily welcomes the growing strength of its chip customers.

According to sources in the semiconductor industry, AMD had announced a comprehensive partnership with TSMC for sub-7nm processes, and has also confirmed mass production schedules for 7nm, 7nm EUV, 5nm and 3nm products. However, beyond expectations, AMD’s performance took a Great Leap Forward over the last one and a half years. Board, PC and server manufacturers significantly increased their ‘weightage’ (adoption of AMD products relative to others), in part due to Intel’s chip shortages. More importantly, the partnership with TSMC resulted in drastically improved product performance and yield, as well as price competitiveness for AMD, leading to rising shipments and market share quarter after quarter.

In 2020, because of the huge increase in sales, AMD has been urgently chasing after TSMC to expedite orders. The size of those orders were not small, becoming the greatest fallback for TSMC, which got caught in the Huawei ban crisis, making demand and production planning extremely difficult. As a result, TSMC is also adjusting (broadening) its services for AMD, and in considering the optimum allocation of production capacity, modified the process plans for AMD’s products.

As understood, TSMC has entered the 5nm era since April. The enhanced version of 5nm will also enter mass production in Q4, ahead of market expectations, and the first customer to adopt it is AMD, with its new Ryzen 4000 series processors.

AMD’s new generation Ryzen 4000 series processor (codenamed Vermeer), originally planned to use 7nm EUV, will be unveiled around Sep-Oct, but in line with the mass production schedule of TSMC’s enhanced 5nm process, will only be launched at the end of the year or during CES in Jan 2021.

According to semiconductor industry players, AMD plonked down a lot of money to enter the enhanced 5nm era, hoping to build upon its success and expand its leadership in advanced process technology before Intel’s 10nm process is fully deployed and 7nm process is yet to debut, once again capitalising on the narrative around introduction of advanced process technology and performance/efficiency improvements, to narrow its market share with Intel.

Judging by AMD’s current momentum and product performance, the enhanced 5nm Ryzen series processors will put unprecedented pressure on Intel. If Intel does not cut prices or accelerate the introduction of 10nm desktop processors, its empire may be gradually eroded by AMD, ushering in the biggest change in the global PC platform competitive landscape in 15 years: AMD’s market share can be expected to reach historical highs.

Separately, Nvidia has finally joined the 7nm bandwagon recently, entering full production in the second half of the year, while 5nm capacity continues to be reserved for Apple and HiSilicon, although the status of HiSilicon’s orders after Q4 is unknown due to the heightened US ban on Huawei.

Now, we have not directly seen the DigiTimes article, so we cannot vouch for its authenticity. We only have this picture to go by :

 

5 Reasons Why AMD Ryzen 4000 Will NOT Use 5nm TSMC Process

We have no idea whether the DigiTimes article exists, or was translated accurately, but we seriously doubt it will happen. Here’s why…

Reason #1 : AMD Unlikely To Delay Ryzen 4000 Desktop Launch To 2021

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su confirmed at CES 2020 that Zen 3 will debut in 2020, most likely around October to make it in time for the year-end holiday season.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the consumer launch of the Ryzen 4000 mobile processors, it is unlikely to delay the launch of the Ryzen 4000 desktop processors until early 2021.

Reason #2 : Desktop Ryzen Processors Don’t “Need” 5nm

While shrinking die size is generally a good thing, desktop processors like the upcoming 4th Gen Ryzen 4000 CPUs do not “need” a die shrink.

The focus will be on achieving high clock speeds at lower costs. That’s why the 3rd Gen Ryzen 3000 desktop processors use a chiplet design – the CPU dies are fabricated on 7nm, while the I/O die is fabricated on 12nm.

A matured and improved 7nm process would allow the 4th Gen Ryzen 4000 processors to deliver higher clock speeds at a much lower cost than a new 5nm process.

Reason #3 : Mobile Ryzen Processors Will Likely Be First To Use 5nm

AMD is strongest in the desktop and HEDT segment, outperforming Intel by sheer brute force, thanks to the higher number of cores in their desktop Ryzen and Threadripper processors.

They are weakest in the mobile market, with Intel mobile processors still controlling the vast majority of the market.

To seriously take on Intel in this critical segment, AMD would probably leverage the costly 5nm process to give their future Ryzen 5000 mobile processors a significant advantage in both performance and power consumption.

Reason #4 : 5nm Not That Advantageous Over Improved 7nm

While a 5nm transistor node sounds like it will offer 28.5% smaller transistors than a 7nm node, the difference in reality is much smaller.

That’s partly because the transistor sizes – 7nm, 5nm – are really marketing terms, not precise engineering definitions – and partly because of diminishing returns.

In any case, the TSMC 5nm process promises to offer 25% better performance over 7nm, but their improved 7nm process will offer at least 10% better performance over 7nm.

In other words, the net performance difference between the TSMC 5nm and improved TSMC 7nm (N7+) is just 13.6%. The cost of 5nm would, no doubt, be far more than improved 7nm.

Reason #5 : 5nm Yields Are Still Poor

Another thing to consider with a new transistor node is yield. This is the problem Intel had with their 10nm process technology – poor yield.

As of December 2019, the 5nm TSMC process has an average yield per wafer of ~80% with a tiny die size of 17.92 mm2. That yield goes down to an abysmal 32% with a 100 mm2 die size.

While no one knows how big the Zen 3 die will be, it is safe to say it will be closer to 100 mm2. The Zen 2 die, for example, is 74 mm2 in size.

Will AMD risk the success of their 4th Gen Ryzen 4000 desktop processors on TSMC hitting reasonable yields on 5 nm? We think not!

TNB Meter Reading + Bill Rendering : Stopped During MCO!

After the Movement Control Order (MCO) started, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) announced that they would stop these operations from 20 March 2020 until further notice :

  • on-premise meter reading, and
  • on-premise rendering of electricity bill

They also announced that :

  • you will be issued an estimated bill, based on your previous month’s consumption.
  • your bill will be adjusted only when they resume meter reading, after the MCO period ends.
  • during the MCO, TNB will not deliver any printed electricity bill to your premise.

You still need to pay your TNB electricity bill during the MCO / CMCO. Just because you don’t get your bill, doesn’t mean you get to stop paying.

 

Won’t TNB Resume Meter Reading + Bill Rendering During CMCO?

On 13 May 2020, TNB announced that they are resuming meter reading and bill rendering on a staggered basis, and only in green zone states :

  • Perlis
  • Penang
  • Kedah
  • Perak (except Sri Manjung)
  • Kelantan

That basically means they still won’t perform meter reading for most of the country during the Conditional MCO period.

 

How To Pay Your TNB Bill During MCO / CMCO?

There are three ways to handle your TNB electricity bill during the MCO / CMCO.

Option 1 : Pay The Estimated Bill

TNB mentioned that you will be issued an estimated bill, based on your last bill. If your last bill was RM 100, then your estimated bill during the MCO will be RM 100.

All you have to do is continue paying based on your last bill every month, as long as the Movement Control Order is in effect.

Just pay online through JomPAY using your online banking account.

Option 2 : Use TNB Express Payment

The easiest way to check your current bill and make payment is through myTNB.

Just key in your 12-digit TNB account number, and you will receive the current amount due.

You can pay up to RM 250 using a credit or debit card through Express Payment by clicking Next.

If you wish to pay more than RM 250 though, you will need to first register and log into myTNB.

Alternatively, you can pay through JomPAY using your online banking account.

Option 3 : Use myTNB App

The third option is to install and use the myTNB app, which is available as a free download on both Google Play Store and App Store :

HUAWEI Receives World’s First CC EAL4+ Certificate For 5G!

CCN (Centro Criptologico National), a Spain certification authority, officially issued the CC EAL4+ security certificate to HUAWEI 5900 Series 5G gNodeB software on 20 May 2020, after an evaluation under the provisions of the Spanish IT Security Evaluation and Certification Scheme.

HUAWEI has endeavoured to address cybersecurity concerns surrounding its 5G products through internationally-recognised cybersecurity certification standards, like CC (Common Criteria) and FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard).

Receiving the CC EAL4+ certificate from CCN would go a long way to build up confidence in this 5G software. However, it is unlikely to sway the Trump Administration’s distrust of HUAWEI.

 

CC EAL4+ Security Certificate : What Is It?

CC (Common Criteria) certification is an International standard in evaluating the security of a product or platform. There are seven assurance levels – EAL1 through EAL7.

Samsung Pay Now Supports Boost e-Wallet!

As part of Samsung Pay’s third anniversary, Samsung Malaysia is partnering with Axiata Digital to add support for the Boost e-wallet to Samsung Pay.

With the Boost integration, Samsung Pay users will have an easier option to perform cashless payments with cash merchants and small business owners, even if they do not have a physical credit or debit card.

The Boost integration will be particularly useful for small businesses operating in night markets, food trucks and bazaars.

The Boost option will also be useful for students and younger users who do not have credit or debit cards. They can just use the Boost functionality for peer-to-peer money transfers.

In addition to online banking, the Boost e-wallet can be topped up using any Visa, Mastercard or AMEX credit or debit cards.

Ransomware Warning : 1 in 3 Attacks Target Business Users!

Recent Kaspersky research revealed that in 2019, WannaCry is still the most prevalent ransomware circulating, and some 30% of people targeted by ransomware were business users!

  • 30% of ransomware attacks targeted business users
  • Organisations lost, on average, US$1.46 million in costs, fines and repetitional damage in 2019
  • WannaCry attacked 164,433 users in 2019, and accounted for 21% of all ransomware attacks.
  • GrandCrab accounted for 11% of attacks, while Stop accounted for 4%.

WannaCry, arguably the world’s most famous ransomware, reached its peak 3 years ago – on 12 May 2017 – but continues to wreak havoc on unsuspecting victims.

GrandCrab is famous for its ransomware-as-a-service model, rented out to cybercriminals by its developers. Meanwhile, Stop spreads through compromised software and websites, as well as adware.

 

Ransomware : How To Protect Your Business

Here are some tips that Kaspersky is recommending to stay protected against ransomware :

  • Explain to employees how following simple rules can help a company avoid ransomware incidents.
  • Always have fresh back-up copies of your files so you can replace them in case they are lost (e.g. due to malware or a broken device).
  • Don’t just rely on a physical backup, but also store your backup in the cloud for greater reliability.
  • Always update your operating system and software to eliminate recent vulnerabilities.
  • Use anti-ransomware software, which will prevent ransomware from exploiting vulnerabilities in software and applications – especially important for customers who continue to use Windows 7.

And if a corporate device is encrypted by ransomware, please remember that the attack is a criminal offence. You should NOT pay the ransom.

Instead, report the ransomware attack to your local law enforcement agency, and find a decryptor that may work for you. Some are available for FREE.

With the launch of Radeon Pro VII, AMD announced a slew of updates for Radeon ProRender, including a sneak peek of Radeon ProRender 2.0!

AMD Radeon ProRender May 2020 Updates!

Here are the new updates AMD is introducing for Radeon ProRender, with a special experimental Radeon ProRender 2.0 mode!

Easier Implementation

AMD Radeon ProRender SDKs are now freely available under the permissive Apache Licence 2.0, simplifying the licensing agreement to use Radeon ProRender in your own application.

AMD is also making open-source versions of all their Radeon ProRender plug-ins available on GPUOpen, so developers can use as examples on how to integrate ProRender into their application.

Updated SDKs

A new beta of Radeon ProRender 2.0 SDK is now available, which will introduce these new features :

  • a new flexible shader node system,
  • out-of-core support for heavy geometry,
  • improved rendering algorithm for better convergence with the same samples per pixel, and
  • better CPU + GPU rendering

AMD also released Radeon Rays 4.0, an update of their high-performance ray intersection acceleration library, with a custom AABB hierarchy, and GPU Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH) optimisations.

This new version supports both AMD GPUs and CPUs, as well as those of other vendors using DirectX 12 and Vulkan.

New Unreal Engine Plug-In

AMD is also releasing their new Radeon ProRadeon plug-in for Unreal Engine, which introduces :

  • Vulkan API-based Full Spectrum Rendering technology
  • Full OpenCL path-traced rendering
  • AI-accelerated demonising
  • Adaptive sampling
  • Native tone mapping
  • Gamma controls

This plug-in is fully-integrated into Unreal Engine, and uses existing lights, materials and textures of any scene you create.

Updated Blender Plug-In

AMD also updated their plug-in to support the upcoming release of Blender 2.83, which includes :

  • an OpenVBD volumes node
  • improved export times for image files
  • support for ObjectID and MaterialID AOVs
  • experimental Radeon ProRender 2.0 mode

Updated Autodesk Maya Plug-In

They also updated their Autodesk Maya plug-in to support version 2020, which adds features like :

  • support for rendering OpenVBD volumes
  • Radeon ProRender lights showing in Maya Light Editor and HyperShade
  • support for more Maya shader nodes, camera motion blur
  • experimental Radeon ProRender 2.0 mode

MediaTek Benchmark Cheating : What Happened So Far

MediaTek was caught cheating at smartphone benchmarks, in a stunning expose by Andrei Frumusanu from Anandtech.

Benchmark Cheating : What Is It?

The smartphone industry is a cut-throat business, with brands fighting to differentiate their smartphones from their competitors. One of the ways is to demonstrate a clear performance advantage.

Other than the usual ways – using more powerful processor and graphics cores – brands can tune their operating system to focus more on performance, at the expense of battery life.

Some though want to have the best of both worlds – the ability to brag about both high performance, as well as a long battery life.

To do that, unscrupulous brands can cheat by boosting performance only when a benchmark is run. But because this high performance mode doesn’t kick in when other apps are being used, this tricks reviewers into proclaiming that the particular device has great performance as well as great battery life.

 

Mediatek : Who Are They?

MediaTek is one of the main suppliers of mobile SoCs – the “processors” that power smartphones, tablets and even smart TVs.

They compete against Qualcomm, as a third-party supplier of these system-on-chip platforms to smartphone brands like OPPO, Vivo, and many smaller smartphone brands.

 

MediaTek Benchmark Cheating : What Did They Do?

According to Anandtech, MediaTek programmed their mobile SoCs to identify many benchmarks, and artificially boost performance, when those benchmarks run.

Hidden in the power_whitelist_cfg.xml configuration file were parameters designed to kick MediaTek-powered smartphones into a special high performance Sports Mode, when benchmarks were detected :

MediaTek Benchmark Cheating : How Much Of An Effect

Using an anonymised version of PCMark, Anandtech discovered that the cheat increased performance by 33% overall, with up to 75% boost in certain subtests like writing workload :

MediaTek Benchmark Cheating : What Devices Are Affected?

Anandtech only checked a number of devices, but it looks like pretty much every MediaTek-powered smartphone manufactured in the last few years is affected, even the Sony XA1 from 2016!

MediaTek Response To Cheating Claims

After Anandtech contacted them, MediaTek issued this statement “explaining” their decision to selectively boost performance for benchmarks :

MediaTek follows accepted industry standards and is confident that benchmarking tests accurately represent the capabilities of our chipsets. We work closely with global device makers when it comes to testing and benchmarking devices powered by our chipsets, but ultimately brands have the flexibility to configure their own devices as they see fit. Many companies design devices to run on the highest possible performance levels when benchmarking tests are running in order to show the full capabilities of the chipset. This reveals what the upper end of performance capabilities are on any given chipset.

Of course, in real world scenarios there are a multitude of factors that will determine how chipsets perform. MediaTek’s chipsets are designed to optimize power and performance to provide the best user experience possible while maximizing battery life. If someone is running a compute-intensive program like a demanding game, the chipset will intelligently adapt to computing patterns to deliver sustained performance. This means that a user will see different levels of performance from different apps as the chipset dynamically manages the CPU, GPU and memory resources according to the power and performance that is required for a great user experience. Additionally, some brands have different types of modes turned on in different regions so device performance can vary based on regional market requirements.

We believe that showcasing the full capabilities of a chipset in benchmarking tests is in line with the practices of other companies and gives consumers an accurate picture of device performance.

 

UL Delists Eight MediaTek Chipsets

On 15 April 2020, UL temporarily delisted PCMark for Android scores for eight MediaTek chipsets.

  • MediaTek Helio G90
  • MediaTek Helio G70
  • MediaTek Helio P95
  • MediaTek Helio P90
  • MediaTek Helio P65
  • MediaTek Helio P60
  • MediaTek Helio P20
  • MediaTek Helio A22

This affected more than 50 smartphones from 25 smartphone brands, including the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, Oppo Reno3 Pro, Vivo Y19, and Realme 6.

UL also called out MediaTek for claiming that they were following “industry standards”, saying :

Using hidden mechanisms to detect benchmarking apps by name and make app-specific performance optimizations is not an “accepted industry standard.” It is, in fact, the very opposite of the accepted standard.

Likewise, benchmark scores based on hidden app-specific optimizations and settings that are enabled by default and not available to the user do not accurately reflect a device’s true performance in everyday use. 

Simply put, a device must run a benchmark as if it was any other application. Performance gains must come from reacting to the nature of the workloads in the test rather than the name of the app itself.

 

MediaTek Benchmark Cheating : Conclusion

MediaTek was caught RED HANDED in the act of cheating at benchmarks. There are no two ways about it.

Their “explanation” that their chipsets are designed to “intelligently adapt to computing pattern” is just a lame excuse.

It cannot explain how their P95 processor delivered much poorer performance on an anonymised PCMark benchmark.

This is backed up by details in the configuration files that explicitly show them triggering a special Sports Mode for benchmarks.

Now, this does not change the performance of your MediaTek-powered smartphones. It just means that their benchmark scores were artificially inflated.

Short of an outright apology and a public promise never to do this again, all benchmark scores of MediaTek-powered smartphones should be considered suspect, and not to be trusted.

How Malaysia Manages PPE Supply To Combat COVID-19

PPE supplies are extremely limited across the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Malaysia is no exception.

Why There Is A Shortage Of PPE In Malaysia

Thanks to the Movement Control Order (MCO), Malaysia has flattened the curve, ensuring that our healthcare system is not overwhelmed.

The Malaysia Ministry of Health have also been proactive in creating spare capacity, even creating a temporary COVID-19 hospital, and marshalling volunteers.

However, like many countries in the world – they have trouble sourcing for PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) to protect healthcare workers, announcing recently that they are running short of 3 critical PPE types.

PPE are also consumables, which means there must be steady and reliable supply, or even the best-stocked healthcare service in the world will run out eventually.

 

PPE Strategy In Malaysia

To avoid running out of PPE, the Malaysia Ministry of Health is procuring PPE in bulk at central and state levels.

They are also working closely with the National Security Council, National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and other central agencies to ensure that issues relating to the supply chain issues are specifically addressed.

They are also minimising the need for PPE by the public through the Movement Control Order (MCO), and business reengineering. Hospitals and clinics have also been realigned to prepare special COVID-19 and green zones, as well as adopt more judicious use of PPE.

Here is a summary of their strategy.

  1. Coordinate the PPE supply chain – centralised procurement and monitoring of effective PPE usage
  2. Minimise the need for PPE – through quarantine and business reengineering to reduce exposure to infection
  3. Rational use of PPE – PPE should be judiciously used based on the risk of exposure

 

 

PPE Monitoring + Management In Malaysia

To monitor and manage the stock levels and consumption rates for the different PPE types, the Malaysia Ministry of Health uses a simple online reporting and database system.

This system is administered by officers at all State Health Departments, hospitals and District Health Offices (including all health clinics under the respective District Health Office).

The responsible officers in each state will key in data on a daily basis, and the information is used to rapidly mobilise stocks to hospitals that require them.

The Malaysia Ministry of Health also provided this list of names, telephone numbers and email addresses of the responsible officers in each state that can assist the public, as well as healthcare workers, in providing feedback on shortage of any PPE.

Upon “immediate verification”, these officers can rapidly mobilise available PPE stocks to address a shortage, based on needs and priorities.

AMD GPU Source Code Hack : What’s Going On?

In case you missed it, AMD suffered a massive cybersecurity breach, losing the source codes to their Navi 10, Navi 21 and Arden GPUs in a hack!

Here is a summary of how the hack went down, and what this could mean for AMD and their partners…

 

AMD GPU Source Code Hack : A Quick Summary

A hacker managed to get her hands on AMD source codes for current and future graphics products, and has apparently tried to blackmail AMD.

After that failed, she leaked some of the source codes on Github, and threatened to release everything if she does not find a buyer.

The hacker recently leaked some of the source codes on Github, which was quickly removed after AMD issued a DMCA notice.

She has treated to release all of the stolen source codes, if she does not find a buyer for them,.

 

AMD GPU Source Code Hack : The Timeline

November 2019

A hacker called Palesa hacked into an unprotected computer / server, where she found and downloaded AMD source codes, which were determined to be for :

  • the current Navi 10 GPU (based on RDNA)
  • the upcoming Navi 21 GPU (based on RDNA 2), as well as
  • the Arden SoC for the Microsoft Xbox Series X console.

The source code was unexpectedly achieved from an unprotected computer / server through some exploits.

I later found out about the files inside it. They weren’t even protected properly or even encrypted with anything which is just sad.

Palesa told TorrentFreak that she valued the source codes at $100 million, but did not reveal how she came to that mind-blowing valuation.

December 2019

Palesa contacted AMD, allegedly to blackmail them into paying for the return of the source codes.

Mid-March 2020

Rumours started circulating that a hacker obtained the source codes for Navi 10, Navi 21 and Arden.

24 March 2020

AMD discovered that some of the source codes were uploaded to the new xxXsoullessXxx repository on Github, as the project called AMD-navi-GPU-HARDWARE-SOURCE.

They issued a DCMA notice, notifying Github that, “This repository contains intellectual property owned by and stolen from AMD.” and that “The original IP is held privately and was stolen from AMD.

Github took down that repository, as well as four other repositories that AMD later identified as forks :

25 March 2020

When contacted by TorrentFreak, Palesa said that she will leak all of the stolen source codes if she does not get a buyer for them :

If I get no buyer I will just leak everything.

AMD issued this statement on the theft of their graphics IP :

At AMD, data security and the protection of our intellectual property are a priority. In December 2019, we were contacted by someone who claimed to have test files related to a subset of our current and future graphics products, some of which were recently posted online, but have since been taken down.

While we are aware the perpetrator has additional files that have not been made public, we believe the stolen graphics IP is not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products. We are not aware of the perpetrator possessing any other AMD IP.

We are working closely with law enforcement officials and other experts as a part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

 

AMD GPU Source Code Hack : What Was Leaked So Far?

According to WCCFTech who spoke to people who have vast experience with Verilog, and viewed those source codes, this was what was leaked so far :

  • Partial Verilog files that are typically used in the construction of processors.
  • The Verilog files in question represent a single and isolated function(s) on the GPU – NOT the whole/actual GPU blueprint.
  • Based on the leaker’s screenshots, the files not yet leaked are more of the same and also nowhere close to being a complete “source code”.
  • These Verilog files are built on a proprietary schematic that is only compatible with AMD’s internal design language (in other words, these are going to be close to useless to a third party).

 

AMD GPU Source Code Hack : The Implications

From what those experts told WCCFTech, the leaked source codes :

  • cannot be used to design or reverse engineer any of the three GPUs.
  • cannot be used to easily determine product specifications
  • cannot be used to bypass security features on AMD GPUs, although they may reveal vulnerabilities that can be exploited
  • does not contain any “crown jewel” IP

That said, their opinions are based on what was leaked so far. It is possible that Palesa may have at lot more that she has not revealed.

But considering the fact that she took the step of leaking some source code, they are likely not useful or important enough to be worth the trouble, especially now that a criminal investigation is underway.

What this leak has likely achieved is put a target on Palesa’s back, cause some embarrassment to AMD, and force them to relook at their cybersecurity measures and protocols.

KKM : No Online Ad / Sale Of COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits!

The Malaysia Ministry of Health struck back at MYEG, admonishing them for advertising and promoting their COVID-19 rapid test kits without prior approval.

MYEG beat a hasty retreat, offering those who pre-ordered their rapid test kits a refund. Here are the details…

 

KKM : No Online Advertising / Sale Of COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits!

On 24 March 2020, the Medical Device Authority (PBPP) of the Malaysia Ministry of Health issued a statement, directly admonishing MYEG for advertising and promoting their COVID-19 rapid test kits without prior approval.

Allowing the online advertising and sale of such rapid test kits will increase the risk of infection, because the public does not have the necessary knowledge to interpret the results, or handle the situation should they receive a positive result.

That’s why they believe the COVID-19 screening test should be performed by trained healthcare professionals in a health facility certified by the Ministry of Health.

The PBPP notes that while COVID-19 rapid test kits may receive Special Access exemptions to fast-track their availability in the market, it is NOT PERMITTED to promote them through advertisements.

In addition, the PBPP stressed that such “fast tracked” COVID-19 rapid test kits can only be distributed through authorised health facilities.

They also pointed out that anyone who contravenes the Medical Devices Act 2012 (Act 737) can be prosecuted via two sections :

  • Section 5(2) : Fined up to RM 200,000, or jailed up to 3 years, or both
  • Section 44(2) : Fined up to RM 300,000, or jailed up to 2 years, or both

Here is the official statement by the Medical Device Authority of the Malaysia Ministry of Health on the MYEG COVID-19 rapid test kits.

Pengiklanan dan penjualan peranti Kit Ujian Pantas COVID-19 (COVID-19 Rapid Test Kit) dalam talian MYEG

Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) melalui Pihak Berkuasa Peranti Perubatan (PBPP) telah menerima pelbagai pertanyaan mengenai kit ujian pantas COVID-19 (COVID-19 rapid test kit) yang diiklan dan dijual secara dalam talian melalui portal MYEG. Kami ingin memaklumkan semakan mendapati PBPP tidak pernah mengeluarkan apa-apa kebenaran kepada MYEG untuk mengiklan, mengedar atau menjual peranti kit ujian pantas COVID-19 ini.

Paparan iklan yang dibuat oleh pihak MYEG ini boleh menimbulkan kekeliruan dan menggalakkan pembelian di kalangan orang awam. Keadaan ini boleh meningkatkan risiko jangkitan kerana dikhuatiri orang awam tidak mempunyai pengetahuan yang mencukupi untuk menginterpretasi keputusan ujian yang diperolehi dan mengendalikan situasi setelah mendapat keputusan ujian tersebut. Ujian pengesanan jangkitan COVID-19 perlu dilakukan oleh kakitangan kesihatan yang berkelayakan dan terlatih di fasiliti kesihatan yang diiktirafkan KKM untuk memastikan pengendalian dan rawatan pesakit dilakukan mengikut prosedur yang ditetapkan dan dengan itu dapat mengekang penularan wabak berkenaan.

Mana-mana syarikat atau establismen yang hendak membekalkan kit ujian COVID-19, hendaklah dipastikan peranti tersebut berdaftar dan syarikat telah mempunyai lesen establismen di bawah Akta Peranti Perubatan 2012 (Akta 737) yang sah. Walau bagaimanapun, semasa penularan wabak ini, mana-mana syarikat atau establismen boleh membuat notifikasi untuk pengecualian daripada pendaftaran bagi peletakan peranti kit ujian COVID-19 di pasaran melalui akses khas (special access). Mana-mana peranti kit ujian COVID-19 yang telah memperolehi pengecualian ini, pengiklanan peranti tersebut tidak dibenarkan sama sekali dan pengedaran hendaklah dibuat secara langsung ke premis-premis kesihatan yang telah dibenarkan. Mana-mana orang yang disabitkan kesalahan dalam hal ini boleh dikenakan hukuman denda tidak melebihi dua ratus ribu ringgit (RM200,000) atau penjara bagi tempoh tidak melebih dua (2) tahun atau kedua-duanya sekali di bawah seksyen 5(2) Akta 737, dan/atau dikenakan hukuman denda tidak melebihi tiga ratus ribu ringgit (RM300,000) atau penjara bagi tempoh tidak melebih dua (2) tahun atau kedua-duanya sekali di bawah seksyen 44(2) Akta yang sama.

PBPP akan terus memantau pengiklanan, pengedaran dan penjualan kit ujian COVID-19 di pasaran termasuk penjualan dan pengedaran melalui platfom dalam talian bagi memastikan kit ujian COVID-19 yang berada di pasaran adalah selamat dan berkesan digunakan. Orang ramai dinasihatkan agar tidak mudah terpengaruh dengan mana-mana iklan berkaitan kit ujian COVID-19 dan sentiasa mengambil langkah-langkah pencegahan jangkitan sebagaimana yang disarankan oleh KKM. Bagi mana-mana pihak yang ingin mengetahui status pendaftaran kit ujian COVID-19 semakan boleh dibuat dengan menghubungi PBPP melalui talian 03-82300300 atau email, mdb@mda.gov.my.

The Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) through the Medical Device Authority (PBPP) received many queries about the COVID-19 Rapid Test Kit that was advertised and sold online through the MYEG portal.

We would like to publicly state that our review found that Medical Device Authority never authorised MYEG to advertise, distribute or sell this COVID-19 rapid test kit.

The advertisement by MYEG can confuse and promote purchase by the public. This situation can increase the risk of infection because the public does not have enough knowledge to interpret the test results and handle the situation after obtaining the test results.

The COVID-19 diagnostic test must to be performed by healthcare workers who are qualified and trained in health facilities certified by the Ministry of Health to ensure that the handling and treatment of patient is done according to protocol and thus curb the spread of the epidemic.

Any company that would like to supply COVID-19 Test Kits should be ensure that the device is registered and the company has a legal establishment license under the Medical Devices Act 2012 (Act 737).

However, during this outbreak, any company or establishment can make a request for the exemption of registration for the provision of the COVID-19 test kits in the market through Special Access. If a COVID-19 test kit received such an exemption, it is not permitted to advertise such a device at all, and it should only be made available in permitted health establishments.

Any person who is convicted of this offence can be fined not more than two hundred thousand ringgit (RM 200,000) or jailed for a period of not exceeding two (2) years, or both, under Section 5(2) of Act 737, and/or fined not more  three hundred thousand ringgit (RM 300,000), or jailed for a period of not exceeding two (2) years, or both, under Section 44(2) of same Act.

The Medical Device Authority (PBPP) will continue to monitor the advertising, distribution and sales of the COVID-19 test kits in the market, including online sales and distribution to ensure that the COVID-19 test kit that is in the market is safe and effective to use.

The public is advised not to be easily influenced by any advertisements on COVID-19 test kits and always take the preventive steps as recommended by the Ministry of Health.

MYEG COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits Are Genuine, But…

MYEG has clarified with the Malaysia Ministry of Health that their COVID-19 rapid test kits are genuine, and are available for pre-order.

MYEG COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits

On 17 March 2020, MYEG announced the availability of COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits :

You can now purchase your own home testing kit from us. It is an innovative way to detect the virus through blood samples. You can get the results within 15 minutes, no requirement for samples to be sent to laboratories. This Covid-19 Rapid Test Kit is developed by leading diagnostics company and approved by health authorities in China where it presently widely used.

MYEG is selling each COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits in packs of 10, for RM 990 – which works out to RM 99 per test kit.

Another online retailer is offering the same / similar COVID-19 Rapid Test Kit for just RM 69.90.

They are both not only much cheaper than current COVID-19 lab tests, but claim to be able to return results within 15 minutes.

 

MYEG COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits Are Genuine

After the Malaysia Ministry of Health called their COVID-19 rapid test kits fake news, MYEG quickly clarified the situation.

MYEG wishes to reiterate that, as announced previously, it is awaiting approval from local authorities for the COVID-19 rapid test kit. It is still pending certification from the Ministry of Health at this point in time.

With the requisite documents including regulatory filings, test reports and compliance certificates in place, the test kits have been cleared by health authorities in China and Europe, where they are already being widely used. Due to the pandemic emergency, most countries accept the Declaration of Conformity, with clinic trial report and all relevant supporting documents.

The Malaysia Ministry of Health has since removed their claim that these are fake rapid test kits.

Currently, these MYEG COVID-19 rapid test kits are available for pre-order, pending approval and certification by the Ministry of Health.

MYEG COVID-19 Rapid Test : How Does It Work?

COVID-19 rapid tests cut down time and costs by looking for antibodies to COVID-19 in a blood sample, instead of nasopharyngeal swab (NP) or oropharyngeal swab (OP).

The MYEG COVID-19 rapid test looks for both IgM – the first antibodies our body makes to fight a new infection, and IgG – the most abundant antibodies in the body.

To “fish” for COVID-19 specific IgM and/or IgG antibodies, these rapid test kits use selected parts of the COVID-19 capsule proteins as antigens – bait – which are combined with colloidal gold as a marker.

When you drop a blood sample, COVID-19 antibodies (if present in the blood) will be “attracted” to the “bait” – the COVID-19 capsule proteins in the rapid test.

The antibodies will combine with the antigens, forming a visible, coloured compound which will appear as a red / burgundy line in the test strip.

MYEG COVID-19 Rapid Tests : Should You Buy Them?

COVID-19 rapid tests will no doubt be a real game changer – offering a convenient and affordable way for people to get tested.

However, it is critical that they are first tested and certified by health authorities, to ensure that they are reliable and accurate, especially when undertaken by the public who are not trained in taking blood samples.

Even though MYEG is offering the assurance that all-preorders of these test kits are fully refundable, we recommend waiting until they have been certified by the Malaysia Ministry of Health, before you purchase them.

We should also note that many health authorities are recommending against self-testing for COVID-19 at home :

Public Health England

Some manufacturers are selling products for the diagnosis of COVID-19 infection in community settings, such as pharmacies.

The current view by PHE is that use of these products is not advised:

  • some of these products look for virus while others look for the body’s immune response to the virus. Such tests are very rapid and can work on a range of specimens including serum, plasma or finger-prick whole blood
  • there is little information on the accuracy of the tests, or on how a patient’s antibody response develops or changes during COVID-19 infection. It is not known whether either a positive or negative result is reliable
  • currently there is no published evidence about the suitability of these tests for diagnosing COVID-19 infection in a community setting

The tests are not always as reliable as those currently being used. Because rapid test kits look for antibodies associated with the virus rather than the virus itself, they could record false negatives if used at the wrong time.

The question is how significant those limitations are. It depends really on how many true cases you detect. Does it detect every positive, or does it miss 5%?

In the end, anybody with anything to sell is in the market and their interest is to make the biggest claims.

I think that’s the case with a lot of the things that we’ll see coming onto the market. There’s uncertainty because it didn’t come to market after stringent testing, it came to the market because there’s a feeling of ‘my god we need it’.

In normal circumstances you wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole but this is what happens when there’s a crisis.

It is also notable that, as of 9 March 2020, China denied that they approved any COVID-19 test kits for use by the public at home :

The Beijing Medical Products Administration denied rumors that claimed that people can test for the novel coronavirus using a home testing kit and added there was no authorized home version of the test yet.

A so-called home testing kit went viral on WeChat, with the seller claiming the result would be visible 15 minutes after adding a drop of blood from one’s finger to the kit. The product was recommended for office buildings and schools to test those returning and isolated at home who could not access a medical test at the hospital.

According to the administration, samples carried by authorized testing kits can only be tested in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) laboratories or other medical institutes. There is no self-testing device yet and those sold on WeChat are fake.

 

COVID-19 : How To Keep Safe!

Here are a few simple steps to stay safe from COVID-19 :

  • Avoid suspected cases or disease hotpots, like hospitals, if possible!
  • Avoid public events and crowds
  • Keep our hands clean with soap or hand sanitiser
  • Keep our home, office, vehicles, etc. clean
  • If you need to wear a surgical mask, make sure you put it on and remove it properly!
  • Thoroughly cook your food, and boil water before drinking
