MYEG vs KKM : Our COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits Are Real!

MYEG announced that they are offering COVID-19 rapid test kits for just RM 99 (US$24), but the Malaysia Ministry of Health declared those COVID-19 rapid test kits as FAKE!

Find out what happened, and why the MYEG COVID-19 rapid test kits are genuine, but you will need to hold off buying them for now…

 

MYEG COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits

On 17 March 2020, MYEG announced the availability of COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits :

You can now purchase your own home testing kit from us. It is an innovative way to detect the virus through blood samples. You can get the results within 15 minutes, no requirement for samples to be sent to laboratories. This Covid-19 Rapid Test Kit is developed by leading diagnostics company and approved by health authorities in China where it presently widely used.

MYEG is selling each COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits in packs of 10, for RM 990 – which works out to RM 99 per test kit.

Another online retailer is offering the same / similar COVID-19 Rapid Test Kit for just RM 69.90.

They are both not only much cheaper than current COVID-19 lab tests, but claim to be able to return results within 15 minutes.

 

MYEG COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits Are Fake?

The very next day though, the Malaysia Ministry of Health announced that it was FAKE NEWS :

What’s going on? Despite many people asking KKM (Malaysia Ministry of Health) why they declared it as fake news, since the COVID-19 rapid test kits are really being offered by MYEG, they have not responded.

However, it is possible that they are labelling it as fake news because the COVID-19 Rapid Test Kit has not been approved by the KKM or the IMR (Institute of Medical Research).

This is a developing story, and we will update it when we receive new information!

 

MYEG Insists COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits Are Genuine

MYEG issued a statement claiming that their COVID-19 rapid test kits are genuine :

MYEG wishes to reiterate that, as announced previously, it is awaiting approval from local authorities for the COVID-19 rapid test kit. It is still pending certification from the Ministry of Health at this point in time.

With the requisite documents including regulatory filings, test reports and compliance certificates in place, the test kits have been cleared by health authorities in China and Europe, where they are already being widely used. Due to the pandemic emergency, most countries accept the Declaration of Conformity, with clinic trial report and all relevant supporting documents.

As such, MYEG is working in parallel to accept pre-orders (which are fully refundable) in order to secure availability from our partner, a Chinese biomedical firm so that we will have sufficient supplies once certification is received. If for any reason this is not received, all pre-orders are fully refundable.

Due to the simplicity of use for the testing kit, MYEG believes that it is an accessible option to increase testing amongst Malaysians to help assist in early detection and further prevent the spread of the virus. It will also help give Malaysians some peace of mind given its relative ease of use.

 

MYEG COVID-19 Rapid Test : How Does It Work?

COVID-19 rapid tests cut down time and costs by looking for antibodies to COVID-19 in a blood sample, instead of nasopharyngeal swab (NP) or oropharyngeal swab (OP).

The MYEG COVID-19 rapid test looks for both IgM – the first antibodies our body makes to fight a new infection, and IgG – the most abundant antibodies in the body.

To “fish” for COVID-19 specific IgM and/or IgG antibodies, these rapid test kits use selected parts of the COVID-19 capsule proteins as antigens – bait – which are combined with colloidal gold as a marker.

When you drop a blood sample, COVID-19 antibodies (if present in the blood) will be “attracted” to the “bait” – the COVID-19 capsule proteins in the rapid test.

The antibodies will combine with the antigens, forming a visible, coloured compound which will appear as a red / burgundy line in the test strip.

COVID-19 : How To Keep Safe!

Here are a few simple steps to stay safe from COVID-19 :

  • Avoid suspected cases or disease hotpots, like hospitals, if possible!
  • Avoid public events and crowds
  • Keep our hands clean with soap or hand sanitiser
  • Keep our home, office, vehicles, etc. clean
  • If you need to wear a surgical mask, make sure you put it on and remove it properly!
  • Thoroughly cook your food, and boil water before drinking

Forrest Norrod is senior vice president and general manager of the Datacenter and Embedded Solutions Business Group at AMD.

He is responsible for managing all aspects of strategy, business management, engineering and sales for AMD datacenter and embedded products.

Norrod has more than 25 years of technology industry experience across a number of engineering and business management roles at both the chip and system level.

 

AMD Datacenter Leadership In 2020 & Beyond!

During AMD Financial Analyst Day 2020, Forrest Norrod shared AMD’s datacenter leadership with EPYC and Radeon Instinct, and AMD’s datancenter roadmap in this presentation.

Here are the key points from Forrest Norrod’s presentation :

  • AMD won the contract to power the recently announced El Capitan supercomputer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory with EPYC processors and Radeon Instinct GPUs.
  • Expected to come online in 2023, El Capitan is expected to deliver more than 2 exaFLOPs of double-precision performance, making it more powerful than today’s 200 fastest supercomputers combined.

  • AMD is continuing to gain traction with its 2nd Generation AMD EPYC processors in enterprise, cloud and HPC markets based on delivering performance leadership and TCO advantages across the most important enterprise and cloud workloads.
  • AMD EPYC is enabling Nokia to double the performance of their 5G Cloud Packet Core.
  • In 2020 AMD expects more than 150 AMD EPYC processor-powered cloud instances and 140 server platforms to be available.

  • AMD is introducing new technologies including AMD CDNA architecture, 3rd Generation Infinity Architecture and the ROCm 4.0 software platform, all of which will support the AMD-powered Frontier and El Capitan supercomputers.
  • AMD plans to ship the 3rd Gen AMD EPYC “Milan” processor in Late 2020, and it will provide 100% coverage of enterprise requirements – whether it’s for the cloud, HPC or enterprise IT.
  • Milan will remain on the 7 nm process, but the next-generation Genda core (Zen 4) will use the 5 nm process technology.

  • The AMD CDNA architecture will allow for better scalability, with accelerators fully interconnected with 2nd Gen Infinity Architecture.
  • But the next-generation AMD CDNA 2 architecture will allow for Unified Data, with CPU + GPU coherency with 3rd Gen Infinity Architecture – allowing for easier programming and improved performance.

AnTuTu : Why They Got Banned From Google Play Store!

If you are wondering why you can no longer find AnTuTu apps on the Google Play Store, that’s because they have been banned and removed!

And guess what got AnTuTu apps banned? Cheetah Mobile…

 

Cheetah Mobile : An Insidious Developer According To Google

On 20 February 2020, Google posted that they removed nearly 600 apps from the Google Play Store, banning many of their developers for “disruptive ads” and “ad fraud”.

One of those developers – notorious Chinese app developer, Cheetah Mobile, with a history of buying over popular apps to load them with spyware and malicious advertisements.

 

AnTuTu : Banned From Google Play Store!

And now, it appears that AnTuTu have also been affected by the Google ban hammer, with these apps removed :

  • AnTuTu Benchmark
  • AnTuTu 3DBench
  • AITuTu

Why? It appears those AnTuTu apps were banned, because AnTuTu found to be associated with Cheetah Mobile :

  • Cheetah Mobile CEO Fu Sheng is listed as the Chairman of Beijing AnTuTu Technology Co. Ltd
  • The AnTuTu privacy policy link used the Cheetah Mobile (cmcm.com) domain.

 

AnTuTu Shares Their Point Of View

AnTuTu clarified the issue in their statement to Android Police that :

  • Cheetah Mobile was merely an investor and shareholder, but they remain independent.
  • They purchased and used the legal services from Cheetah Mobile, so the privacy policy link used their domain.
  • They are now working to change their “legal supplier”.
  • Listing Fu Sheng as the Chairman of Beijing AnTuTu Technology Co. Ltd was a requirement of “the investors”.
  • They have already asked Cheetah Mobile to solve these problems.

AnTuTu apps are still available as APK downloads on their website, but installing them outside of Google Play is not without risks, so caveat emptor!

Graphics Market Updates

COVID-19 Statement

AMD expects the impact from COVID-19 in the first quarter to be modest, potentially resulting in revenue coming in at the lower end of the guidance of approximately $1.8 billion, plus or minus $50 million. Full year 2020 financial guidance remains unchanged.

El Capitan Supercomputer : AMD Selected As Node Supplier!

It’s official – AMD has been selected as the node supplier for the El Capitan supercomputer, which is projected to be the world’s most powerful supercomputer when it is fully deployed!

 

El Capitan Supercomputer : A Quick Primer!

El Capitan is a supercomputer funded by the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program at the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) from the Department of Energy.

When it is fully deployed in 2023, it will perform complex and increasingly predictive modelling and simulation for the NNSA’s Life Extension Programs (LEPs), which addresses nuclear weapon raging and emergent threat issues.

This will allow the United States to keep its nuclear stockpile safe, secure and reliable, in the absence of underground nuclear testing.

“This unprecedented computing capability, powered by advanced CPU and GPU technology from AMD, will sustain America’s position on the global stage in high-performance computing and provide an observable example of the commitment of the country to maintaining an unparalleled nuclear deterrent,” said LLNL Director Bill Goldstein.

“Today’s news provides a prime example of how government and industry can work together for the benefit of the entire nation.”

Besides supporting the nuclear stockpile, El Capitan will perform secondary US national security missions, including nuclear nonproliferation and counterterrorism.

NNSA laboratories – Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories – are building machine learning and AI into computational techniques and analysis that will benefit NNSA’s primary missions and unclassified projects such as climate modelling and cancer research for DOE.

To that end, it will use a combination of CPUs and GPUs to exceed 2 exaFLOPS in performance – that’s two quintillion floating point operations per second. That will make it the world’s most powerful supercomputer!

 

El Capitan Supercomputer : AMD Selected As Node Supplier!

El Capitan will be powered by the next-generation AMD EPYC processors, codenamed Genoa and featuring the upcoming AMD Zen 4 processor cores, as well as the next-generation AMD Radeon Instinct GPUs based on a new compute-optimised architecture.

The nodes will run on the AMD Radeon Open Compute (ROCm) heterogenous computing platform, with most of their floating point computing power delivered by the Radeon Instinct GPUs.

Not only will the El Capitan nodes offer significantly greater per-node performance than any current system, they will also offer dramatically better energy efficiency.

El Capitan will also integrated advanced features that have not yet been widely deployed, including :

  • HPE Cray Slingshot interconnect network, which will enable large calculations across many nodes
  • new HPE optics technologies to deliver higher data transmission rates with better power efficiency and reliability
  • new Cray Shasta software platform, with a new container-based architecture

“El Capitan will drive unprecedented advancements in HPC and AI, powered by the next-generation AMD EPYC CPUs and Radeon Instinct GPUs,” said Forrest Norrod, senior vice president and general manager, Datacenter and Embedded Systems Group, AMD.

ASEAN plans to keep the 5G ecosystem open to HUAWEI, to ensure a level playing field as ASEAN countries build up their 5G infrastructure. Here are the details!

 

ASEAN Keeps 5G Ecosystem Door Open For HUAWEI

During a courtesy visit to the HUAWEI Cyber Security Transparency Center in Brussels, Belgium, the Deputy Secretary-General for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), Dr. Aladdin D. Rillo said that ASEAN has to ensure a level-playing field in developing their 5G ecosystem.

“We’re very much committed to ensuring that market players like Huawei are engaged, because these private sector players are very important in terms of the ability to build the right infrastructure and develop the ecosystem,” said the Deputy Secretary-General.

“The world is very inter-connected and integrated. We have to help each other and work together towards our common goals. Any distraction from that will not be beneficial to any player,” he added.

As the digital sector in ASEAN countries is booming, cybersecurity will play a critical role in digital transformation in ASEAN, particularly in accelerating the development of 5G, AI and IoT.

“We are impressed on how Huawei carried out cyber security approaches as explained during our visit to Huawei Cyber Security Transparency Center. This further convinced us why cyber security measures are needed to optimize security in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 in ASEAN,” Dr. Rillo said.

“Therefore, we continue to encourage ASEAN’s countries to strengthen the cooperation, and we also need support from private players that have proven capable of delivering reliable and leading technologies, such as Huawei, especially in building innovation-friendly ecosystem, and to answer relevant issues related to big data, data privacy and cybersecurity,” he added.

 

ASEAN 5G Development

The ASEAN region is currently experiencing rapid growth of the Internet, digital, social media and mobile activities with 65% Internet penetration and over 400 million Internet users.

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) therefore expressed its commitment to encourage member countries to accelerate their digital transformation in various sectors, to realise a digital intelligent world by 2030.

“There has been a strong emphasis on the digitalization in ASEAN. To do that, we need to have the right infrastructure,” said Dr. Rillo. “This year, under the chairmanship of Vietnam, we’re looking specifically at 5G, which is an important foundation for us to support digital transformation and market integration.”

“With ASEAN’s digital economy has surged to USD100 billion for the first time in 2019 and is expected to grow beyond USD300 billion by 2025, for governments, business, and society, digital transformation is no longer just an option, but a necessity for economic and business empowerment,” he added.

HUAWEI Completes 800G Optical Transport Trial In Zhejiang!

HUAWEI announced today (4 March 2020) that they successfully completed the first live trial of their 800G optical transport network with China Mobile in Zhejiang.

This moves HUAWEI one step closer to the commercialisation of their 800G optical transport network solution, which will support 5G, big data and cloud computing in China.

 

HUAWEI Completes 800G Optical Transport Trial In Zhejiang!

The HUAWEI 800G optical transport solution promises to meet China Mobile (Zhejiang)’s large-capacity transmission requirements for tens of millions of users.

It achieves this by delivering up to 48 Terabits per second of bandwidth per-fibre – which is 6 times the capacity of traditional 100G networks, allowing it to support 1 million concurrent 4K video streams.

HUAWEI reported that the first live test of their 800G optical transport solution, using two data centres 80 kilometres apart, was successful.

Simon Lu, President of Huawei’s Transmission Network Domain, said, “We are delighted to have completed the first operator-based 800G trial with China Mobile (Zhejiang).

This is a milestone in the global commercial use of Huawei’s 800G solution. Huawei will continue investing in R&D to provide high-quality, reliable, and evolvable solutions while helping China Mobile (Zhejiang) achieve greater business success.”

 

HUAWEI 800G Optical Transport Trial : Why It Matters

The deployment of such 800G high-capacity transport solutions will greatly increase the capacity and efficiency of China Mobile (Zhejiang)’s optical networks.

This will be important in the next five years as new technologies like 5G, cloud computing, big data and AR/VR become more common, and require more bandwidth.

China Mobile (Zhejiang) states that they plan to strengthen its cooperation with HUAWEI to “build more efficient optical networks, and provide high-quality connection services“.

Staffed by a mix of TÜV AUSTRIA and LGMS staff initially, they plan to add a hundred more cybersecurity positions over the next few years.

The new team’s focus will be to help organisations identify vulnerabilities within their IT infrastructure, and recommending measures to maintain and improve on their cybersecurity practices.

This Austrian-Malaysian joint venture will also stimulate Industry 4.0 Cybersecurity Testing and Certifications both locally and internationally, as well as drive the protection Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) as encouraged by the Malaysian government.

This joint venture is also supported by MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation), which is striving to promote Malaysia as the Asian hub for cybersecurity testing and certification.

The Future of 5G In Langkawi, Malaysia!

Celcom collaborated with the Royal Malaysian Police and the Langkawi Municipal Council to explore the future of 5G technologies.

They started with the deployment of their 5G Safety and Security Smart City solution, with multiple 360⁰ UHD 4K panoramic live video surveillance cameras were installed at the famous tourist spots in Langkawi.

Leveraging 5G’s low latency and high data speeds, the Celcom 5G Safety and Security Smart City solution used Artificial Intelligence and video analytics to perform real-time monitoring with high-definition picture quality.

Celcom is also expanding its 5G use cases in Langkawi to cover Digital Defense for Beach Boundaries, Crowd Control Monitoring, Digital Control of Inbound and Outbound of Cargo, Fleet Management System, Geo-Fencing & Smart Perimeters, as well as 5G Fixed Wireless Access.

 

Celcom Blazes Path To 5G In Malaysia

The journey to 5G started in 2017, when Celcom became the first network operator in Malaysia to embark on a 5G trial, working with Ericsson to achieve a throughput of 18 Gbps.

Celcom and Ericsson enabled Malaysia’s first 5G hologram call, and demonstrated an autonomous vehicle that connected over a live 5G network in April 2019.

Celcom then launched their first 5G Live Cluster Field Trial at Celcom’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya on 26 July 2019.

The 5G Live Cluster Field Trial lasted six months, allowing Celcom engineers to test and observe use cases and behavior of 5G coverage in a real-life environment.

  • Data throughputs of close to 6 Gbps
  • Latency of about 10 ms
  • 5G-to-5G and 5G-to-4G VoLTE (Voice over LTE) calls
  • Ultra-High Definition (UHD) voice calls
  • 4K UHD video streaming
  • GameCloud game streaming

Celcom also conducted additional live field trials in areas like Seksyen 14, Crystal Crown Hotel, MPBJ Tower and Taman Jaya LRT Station. So far, those 5G macro sites cover just over 1.2 square kilometers, reaching about 4600 people in 450 households, and 130 shops and offices.

 

What Can You Expect When 5G Rolls Out In Malaysia?

When 5G rolls out in Malaysia, it will transform how we play and work, and how we consume our online services and content.

Besides delivering a higher bitrate of 4K video streaming, gamers will immediately notice a big drop in network latency, greatly reducing lag. With ultra-low latencies, it will make gaming far more enjoyable and give them a big advantage over gamers still on 4G.

The combination of high data bandwidth and ultra-low latency will greatly improve AR and VR experiences. 5G will enable AR and VR displays with much higher resolution and refresh rates, for a more believable and comfortable experience.

The introduction of 5G will also spur the creation of high-bandwidth IoT devices for our smart homes, always-connected computing devices, and smarter vehicles and yes, even autonomous vehicles one day!

Even cloud and media services will be transformed by 5G. Data stored in cloud services will feel as if they are residing in your mobile device or computer.

The quality of the media we consume today on streaming services like YouTube, Netflix, Apple TV+, Tidal and Spotify will be greatly improved because the industry will move to optimize for quality, instead of optimizing for low-bandwidth.

Even location services like Waze and Google Maps will be greatly enhanced by 5G. Your location can be more precisely triangulated using the 5G network, which means you will no longer miss a turn, or lane change!

5G may seem like a buzz word today, but it will change our lives when it rolls out in Malaysia!

12 Days Later : Unifi Statement On Game Server Issues…

12 days after the official Unifi support account on Twitter claimed that Unifi blocked some game servers, Unifi finally issued an official statement on the whole PR disaster…

Their statement was aptly named We Are Gamers Too… but honestly, this statement should have been issued 12 days ago.

 

What Happened : Unifi Will Block Games With Inappropriate Content???

The whole issue started on 6 February 2020, when Ahmad Asyraf asked the official Unifi support account on Twitter (@helpmeunifi) to check why he was unable to connect to the Rainbow Six Siege game servers on Unifi.

Shockingly, he was told that “TM will block if the games involve inappropriate content such as violent, gaming, scam, etc.

While some netizens started saying that @helpmeunifi is a fake account, that’s not true. It is a genuine Unifi support account on Twitter.

 

We Found Out What Really Happened 11 Days Ago

We got in touch with a Unifi Chat staff to clarify this, and she confirmed that the @helpmeunifi statement was correct.

It would have been easy to stop there, and start lambasting Unifi for such a policy. After all, the Malaysian government is promoting esports involving FPS games like Rainbow Six Siege!

But for us, their statements appear to be boilerplate replies by frontline staff members who have no idea if this is actually a technical issue, or a policy decision.

So we wrote to TM by email, asking them to clarify why Unifi users are unable to access Rainbow Six Siege game servers.

If it was a technical issue, what was the problem, and when will Unifi be able to restore access?

And if it was a policy issue, we wanted to know how TM came to that decision to block access to the Rainbow Six Siege game servers on Unifi, and if that was a directive by the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission).

This was their replies to us in two separate emails (edited for clarity) :

We are not restricting access to Ubisoft game servers. We are currently working on the issue with Ubisoft.

Our 2nd Level team is already aware of this issue, and are in the midst of investigating the cause. We cannot give you a restoration time frame, and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

So, there you have it, everyone. Confirmation that TM did not actually block access to the Rainbow Six Siege game servers, or any game server for the matter.

As we suspected, the TM Unifi frontline support staff merely recited their boilerplate policy that they have the right to block access to content with inappropriate content.

 

We Are Gamers Too : Official Unifi Statement On Game Server Issues

Almost two weeks into this PR kerfuffle, Unifi finally issued an official statement on the whole issue :

We Are Gamers Too

Hi everyone, recently we’ve received feedback that some unifi users, who are avid gamers, have had some problems accessing their favourite video game servers such as EA, Ubisoft and the PlayStation Network. Understandably, this has caused some frustration. We get it and we feel your frustration. After all, we’re gamers too.

And understandably, there has been some confusion on why these problems occurred. Difficulty accessing gaming servers is not a problem for unifi users only. We’ve checked. Gamers on other networks in Malaysia and around the world are going through the same thing.

There are a number of scenarios that may affect access to game servers. They include multiple logins and wrong login attempts. This has nothing to do with the unifi network itself. Please give us a moment to clarify some misconceptions.

We Do Not Block Access To Game Servers

A number of you have reached out to us via social media and our official customer service channels asking if we block access to game servers. We’d like to make it very clear that we don’t and have no reason to do so. Video games are a big part of a lot of people, including us.

The unifi community is the best place to find like-minded users that may have encountered a similar problem and have found a solution for it. Users having problems with their PSN Network Address Translation (NAT) configuration found that the solution offered here help solved their issue.

It’s hard to believe that we’re heading into the year 2020 – a year that many have marked as a milestone in technology. Autonomous cars lining our streets, virtual assistants predicting our needs and taking our requests, connected and intelligent everything across every industry.

When I stop to think about what has been accomplished over the last decade – it’s quite remarkable.  While we don’t have fully autonomous cars zipping back and forth across major freeways with ease, automakers are getting closer to deploying autonomous fleets in the next few years.

Many of the every-day devices, systems and applications we use are connected and intelligent – including healthcare applications, industrial machines and financial systems – forming what is now deemed as “the edge.”

At the root of all that innovation and advancement are massive amounts of data and compute power, and the capacity across edge, cloud and core data center infrastructure to put data through its paces. And with the amount of data coming our way in the next 10 years – we can only imagine what the world around us will look like in 2030, with apps and services we haven’t even thought of yet.

2020 marks the beginning of what we at Dell Technologies are calling the Next Data Decade, and we are no doubt entering this era with new – and rather high – expectations of what technology can make possible for how we live, work and play. So what new breakthroughs and technology trends will set the tone for what’s to come over the next 10 years? Here are my top predictions for the year ahead.

2020 proves it’s time to keep IT simple

We’ve got a lot of data on our hands…big data, meta data, structured and unstructured data – data living in clouds, in devices at the edge, in core data centers…it’s everywhere. But organisations are struggling to ensure the right data is moving to the right place at the right time. They lack data visibility – the ability for IT teams to quickly access and analyse the right data – because there are too many systems and services woven throughout their IT infrastructure. As we kick off 2020, CIOs will make data visibility a top IT imperative because after all, data is what makes the flywheel of innovation spin.

We’ll see organisations accelerate their digital transformation by simplifying and automating their IT infrastructure and consolidating systems and services into holistic solutions that enable more control and clarity. Consistency in architectures, orchestration and service agreements will open new doors for data management – and that ultimately gives data the ability be used as part of AI and Machine Learning to fuel IT automation.  And all of that enables better, faster business outcomes that the innovation of the next decade will thrive on.

Cloud co-existence sees rolling thunder

The idea that public and private clouds can and will co-exist becomes a clear reality in 2020. Multi-cloud IT strategies supported by hybrid cloud architectures will play a key role in ensuing organisations have better data management and visibility, while also ensuring that their data remains accessible and secure.  In fact, IDC predicted that by 2021, over 90% of enterprises worldwide will rely on a mix of on-premises/dedicated private clouds, several public clouds, and legacy platforms to meet their infrastructure needs.

But private clouds won’t simply exist within the heart of the data center. As 5G and edge deployments continue to rollout, private hybrid clouds will exist at the edge to ensure the real-time visibility and management of data everywhere it lives.

That means organisations will expect more of their cloud and service providers to ensure they can support their hybrid cloud demands across all environments. Further, we’ll see security and data protection become deeply integrated as part of hybrid cloud environments, notably where containers and Kubernetes continue to gain momentum for app development. Bolting security measures onto cloud infrastructure will be a non-starter…it’s got to be inherently built into the fiber of the overall data management strategy edge to core to cloud.

What you get is what you pay

One of the biggest hurdles for IT decision makers driving transformation is resources. CapEx and OpEx can often be limiting factors when trying to plan and predict for compute and consumption needs for the year ahead…never mind the next three-five years. SaaS and cloud consumption models have increased in adoption and popularity, providing organisations with the flexibility to pay for what they use, as they go.

In 2020, flexible consumption and as-a-service options will accelerate rapidly as organisations seize the opportunity to transform into software-defined and cloud-enabled IT. As a result – they’ll be able to choose the right economic model for their business to take advantage of end-to-end IT solutions that enable data mobility and visibility, and crunch even the most intensive AI and Machine Learning workloads when needed.

“The Edge” rapidly expands into the enterprise

The “Edge” continues to evolve – with many working hard to define exactly what it is and where it exists.   Once limited to the Internet of Things (IoT), it’s hard to find any systems, applications, services – people and places – that aren’t connected. The edge is emerging in many places and it’s going to expand with enterprise organisations leading the way, delivering the IT infrastructure to support it.

5G connectivity is creating new use cases and possibilities for healthcare, financial services, education and industrial manufacturing. As a result, SD-WAN and software-defined networking solutions become a core thread of a holistic IT infrastructure solution – ensuring massive data workloads can travel at speed – securely – between edge, core and cloud environments. Open networking solutions will prevail over proprietary as organisations recognise the only way to successfully manage and secure data for the long haul requires the flexibility and agility that only open software defined networking can deliver.

Intelligent devices change the way you work and collaborate

PC innovation continues to push new boundaries every year – screens are more immersive and bigger than ever, yet the form factor becomes smaller and thinner. But more and more, it’s what is running at the heart of that PC that is more transformational than ever. Software applications that use AI and machine learning create systems that now know where and when to optimise power and compute based on your usage patterns. With biometrics, PCs know it’s you from the moment you gaze at the screen. Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge Explained!

The tripping jump challenge appears to have originated in South America as the Skullbreaker Challenge on TikTok, so you may hear it referred to as Rompcráneos or Rasteira in Spanish.

It quickly spread across the world, as kids and even adults try to record themselves pranking others with it on TikTok!

The challenge is simple in concept, but takes two to play it and an innocent victim to make fun of.

  1. Trick the victim into thinking that the two of you want to record a slow-motion video of all three jumping.
  2. Set up a camera to record the action, or have someone record it for you.
  3. As the victim jumps, you both kick his / her legs, so the victim falls flat while you guys laugh.
  4. Share the video on TikTok for likes!

Funny, right? Yeah, if you are an asshole… because this challenge is known as the Skull Breaker Challenge for a reason!

 

Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge Danger!

Take a look at this video which showcases five different tripping jump / skull breaker challenge videos. Watch how ALL five victims hit the back of their heads, and at least two of them are knocked unconscious!

The Austin ISD Police Department opened an investigation into one case involving a student at the Austin Independent School District, who sustained head injuries after being tricked into the skull breaker challenge at the school library.

In Florida, parents of a victim pressed charges against two Seabreeze High School students who performed the skull breaker challenge on their daughter (who was said to be a special needs student).

Valerie Hodson of Arizona shared that her son was knocked unconscious with a head injury after two boys performed the tripping jump challenge on him.

Some perpetrators are even bullying students into becoming their victims, as a tripping jump challenge incident at the South Dade Senior High School on 4 February 2020 demonstrated :

“They kept asking me until I said yes,” the 16-year-old freshman said.

When the victim jumped, the two students swept her legs out from under her, causing her to fall backwards and hurt her neck and head.

“I jumped really high and I remember them kicking me off my feet and I fell on my head,” she said.

The two perpetrators including the student filming the challenge were disciplined, but the victim had to transfer to another school, and is currently being treated for her injuries.

This challenge has even claimed at least one life – a 16-year old Emanuela Medeiros who hit her head on the floor, and died.

Unfortunately, her death did not stop Brazilian social media influencers, Irmãos Fuinha, from trying to popularise this stupid challenge.

They only apologised for doing this after they were severely criticised by Brazilian celebrities and medical professionals!

TikTok Bans Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker Challenge!

Yesterday, TikTok issued this official statement on the Tripping Jump / Skull Breaker challenge :

The safety and well-being of our users is a top priority at TikTok.

As made clear in our Community Guidelines, we do not allow content that encourages, promotes, or glorifies dangerous challenges that might lead to injury, and this includes the skull breaker challenge.

Our content moderation team are on the lookout and we will remove any such content promptly.

It took them long enough to act. Sadly, a girl had to die, and a number of kids (and even adults) were injured.

PS. If you are worried about the Fuinha (@fuinha) brothers, don’t worry – TikTok will never take down a popular channel. All is forgiven, because they have a new Level Up Challenge for all of their young fans on TikTok!

To be fair, at least TikTok has finally banned the videos (if not the “influencers” who popularised them)… Facebook appears to have left the videos up, albeit with a warning cover over them.

Even if we are experienced techies, it is enlightening to find out what Microsoft believes are the cybersecurity threats that we should be looking out for in 2020.

 

Microsoft : Key Cybersecurity Trends In 2020!

Cybersecurity Trend #1 : Less Ransomware But More Attacks

Ransomware has declined in recent years, dropping more than 60% from its peak. But Microsoft sees a rise in other types of cyberattacks.

Attackers have learned that ransomware attracts too much attention from law enforcement, and organisations have gotten better at backing up their data.

So hackers are moving onto other activities like cryptocurrency malware and phishing, where they can more easily profit with less attention.

Cybersecurity Trend #2 : Mining Malware Will Be Big!

Attackers are often acting for financial benefit, so they will make big bets on cryptocurrency, especially in Bitcoin.

They will focus more on mining malware that lets them use your computer to mine cryptocurrency coins without being detected.

Coin mining software is easily available, and cybercriminals have put malware into many widely-shared and used software. They are also trying to inject these malware through websites illegally streaming copyrighted content like the latest movies.

Cybersecurity Trend #3 : Embedded Threats

Attackers are now more sophisticated, targeting legitimate and trusted software supply points to deliver malware. There have been many examples of this attack vector :

  • a routine update for a tax accounting application,
  • popular freeware tools which have backdoors forcibly installed,
  • a server management software package,
  • an internet browser extension or site plugin,
  • malicious images which active scripts when clicked,
  • peer-to-peer applications

In those cases, attackers were able to change the code of legitimate software that people trust and install without hesitation, allowing them to “hitch a ride”.

This attack vector is very dangerous and frustrating, because it takes advantage of the trust that consumers and IT departments already have for legitimate software.

Cybersecurity Trend #4 : Phishing Scams

Phishing continues to be one of the most effective ways to compromise systems, because it targets human decisions and judgment.

Microsoft noted that the percentage of inbound emails that were detected as phishing messages increased 250% throughout 2018, and they expect the final figures for 2019 to show the same trend.

Here is a summary of what Microsoft believes we should do to stay safe online against cybersecurity threats in 2020 :

Cybersecurity Tip #1 : Practice Good Security Hygiene

  1. Keep your operating system and software updated.
  2. Turn on email and browser protections.
  3. Apply the cybersecurity configurations that your hardware and software vendors recommend.
  4. Stay away from any unfamiliar software or websites.
  5. Use only legitimate software, and not just your key applications.

Cybersecurity Tip #2 : Implement More Access Controls

System administrators should implement more access controls, using Zero Trust or at least privilege models.

This will limit hackers that successfully break into your network from accessing more than a segment.

Cybersecurity Tip #3 : 3-2-1 Backup!

Make sure you create and keep backups, and the cloud is a great tool for this.

Microsoft recommends adhering to the 3-2-1 rule – keep three backups of your data on two different storage types, with at least one backup offsite.

Cybersecurity Tip #4 : Keep Vigilant!

Even if we implement strong cybersecurity measures, we must remain vigilant, and keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

Not just system administrators, but users as well. If you see anything suspicious – report it to your IT department immediately.

It can be anything from a sudden slowdown in your computer’s performance, to strange web pages and images appearing.

AMD demonstrated that it not only handily trounces the Xeon W-3275 processor – Intel’s best single-chip processor, it also handily beat the two Xeon Platinum 8280 processors!

To keep all 64 cores humming, every core has 512 KB of L2 cache, with a super large 256 MB L3 cache to keep data flowing.

However, you cannot just build an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X system, and expect to instantly leverage all 64 cores.

 

How To Optimise For 64 Cores : An AMD Guide!

After working with the RED Digital Cinema team, AMD came up with some advice on how to optimise your system for 64 cores.

1. Ensure there is 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM per thread – the system should have 128 GB to 256 GB of memory.

2. Update to Windows 10 version 18362.535 or better (KB4530684 November 2019 Update)

3. The Windows application should be updated to support 65 or more threads, with the ability to span more than one processor group

4. For Linux users, Clear Linux Distro is the best for performance.

5. Reduce storage I/O bottleneck by disabling the virus scanner and system restore feature.

6. Use separate drives for project read, project write and operating systems.

Touch ‘n Go and Shell Malaysia just announced that they will introduce RFID fuelling through the use of TNG RFID. They also announced two promotions to promote TNG RFID at Shell stations!

 

TNG + Shell Announce RFID Fuel Payment

Touch ‘n Go and Shell Malaysia will sign a memorandum of understanding to introduce and use TNG RFID for fuel payments at Shell stations nationwide.

The introduction of TNG RFID fuelling will add a new benefit for TNG RFID users that currently number over 1 million to date.

The TNG RFID tag has an embedded radio-frequency chip, and is installed on the windscreen or headlamp of the vehicle.

An overhead scanner at the fuelling bay will read the signal from the TNG RFID tag, and deduct the cost of the fuel from the user’s TNG eWallet.

 

TNG + Shell Announce RFID + eWallet Offers

To spur the use of TNG RFID, Touch ‘n Go and Shell also announced two offers :

  • 15 February to 31 March 2020 : They will give away 10,000 free TNG RFID tags at select Shell stations to car owners who spend at least RM 50 using their Touch ‘n Go eWallet.
  • 17 February to 14 March 2020 : e-Tunai recipients will receive a cash back of RM 5 + RM 2 when they spend a minimum of RM 20 using their Touch ‘n Go eWallet at Shell stations nationwide.

TNG RFID Tag : What Is It?

TNG RFID is an electronic payment system that uses an RFID (radio-frequency identification) tag to pass through tolls.

The TNG RFID Tag is affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen or headlamp, and linked to the user’s Touch ‘n Go eWallet account.

Whenever the vehicle approaches a toll, an overhead scanner its encrypted code and automatically deducts the fare, allowing the user to pass without stopping.

The TNG RFID Tag is currently enabled for all Class 1 vehicles at these highways :

TNG RFID Fitment Centres To Close From 12-14 February!

Please be warned that Touch ‘n Go plan to shut down all TNG RFID Fitment Centres from 12-14 February 2020! Here is what we know so far…

 

Free RFID Tags @ TNG RFID Fitment Centres To End

During the 18-month pilot programme, Touch ‘n Go had been giving out free TNG RFID tags. That will end when they start charging RM35 for each TNG RFID Tag from 15 February 2020 onwards.

After that announcement, there was been a rush for the free TNG RFID tags, with reports of long queues, and mobile fitment booths running out of RFIG tags.

TNG RFID Fitment Centres To Close From 12-14 February!

It’s about to get even worse, because Touch ‘n Go apparently just issued a notice that they are shutting down their RFID Fitment Centres from 12-14 February 2020!

Now, you have to get your free TNG RFID tags today, or tomorrow, because all Touch ‘n Go RFID Fitment Centres will close from 12-14 February 2020. And as far as we know, this includes their mobile fitment booths as well.

Did TM Block Games On Unifi? No, And Here’s Why…

The official Unifi support account on Twitter shocked Malaysians when it claimed that TM will block games with inappropriate content.

We confirmed that it actually happened, but that it was all a misunderstanding, and Unifi did not block access to the Rainbow Six Siege game servers.

Here is what happened, and how TM Unifi’s response kicked off the whole controversy…

 

TM Unifi Will Block Games With Inappropriate Content?

The whole issue started when Ahmad Asyraf asked the official Unifi support account on Twitter (@helpmeunifi) to check why he was unable to connect to the Rainbow Six Siege game servers on Unifi.

Shockingly, he was told that “TM will block if the games involve inappropriate content such as violent, gaming, scam, etc.

While some netizens started saying that @helpmeunifi is a fake account, that’s not true. It is a genuine Unifi support account on Twitter.

We got in touch with a Unifi Chat staff to clarify this, and she confirmed that the @helpmeunifi statement was correct.

It would have been easy to stop there, and start lambasting Unifi for such a policy. After all, the Malaysian government is promoting esports involving FPS games like Rainbow Six Siege!

But for us, their statements appear to be boilerplate replies by frontline staff members who have no idea if this is actually a technical issue, or a policy decision.

 

No, TM Unifi Did Not Block Access To Game Servers

So we wrote to TM by email, asking them to clarify why Unifi users are unable to access Rainbow Six Siege game servers.

If it was a technical issue, what was the problem, and when will Unifi be able to restore access?

And if it was a policy issue, we wanted to know how TM came to that decision to block access to the Rainbow Six Siege game servers on Unifi, and if that was a directive by the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission).

This was their replies to us in two separate emails (edited for clarity) :

We are not restricting access to Ubisoft game servers. We are currently working on the issue with Ubisoft.

Our 2nd Level team is already aware of this issue, and are in the midst of investigating the cause. We cannot give you a restoration time frame, and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

So, there you have it, everyone. Confirmation that TM did not actually block access to the Rainbow Six Siege game servers, or any game server for the matter.

As we suspected, the TM Unifi frontline support staff merely recited their boilerplate policy that they have the right to block access to content with inappropriate content.

However, that is not the case with this sudden loss of connectivity to Ubisoft servers. And even more unfortunately, they cannot give anyone an idea of when they can restore connectivity…

If you want to get your free TNG RFID Tag, you can still do so until 14 February – yes, Valentine’s Day! We strongly recommend you get your free tag ASAP!

All TNG RFID tags are covered by a lifetime one-time replacement warranty, in case they are damaged or vandalised. You only need to purchase a separate RFID tag when you change your car.

In addition, if you add your existing Touch ‘n Go cards to your Touch ‘n Go eWallet to avoid them going dormant. And you will be able to receive your e-refunds on those cards.

Now Everyone Can Setel Across Malaysia!

PETRONAS just announced that they are rolling out Setel across Malaysia! Now everyone can enjoy the convenience of using Setel to pay at the pump!

 

Setel What?

Setel is a free e-wallet app that was introduced in July 2018, as an e-payment solution for PETRONAS stations.

It lets you remotely pay in the car, refuel it at the pump, and go – without the need to go to the cash counter, or swiping a credit card.

 

Now Everyone Can Setel Across Malaysia!

Initially rolled out only in the Klang Valley, Setel recorded over 3 million transactions as of January 2020.

Thanks to that early success, they decided to roll it out to over 700 PETRONAS stations all over Malaysia. So now, everyone can Setel!

In addition, the app now allows you to redeem Mesra points for fuel directly into the app, offering even more convenience!

 

What To Setel Next?

Setel Ventures CEO Iskandar Ezzahuddin also revealed what features they are planning to add in the near future :

  • Setel Connect : an automated car-to-pump pairing feature that would automatically connect the driver to the pump, allowing for one-touch payments.
  • Setel for Family : family profiles that allow users to pay for fuel and earn Mesra points as a family

Double Eleven To Open First Overseas Game Studio In Malaysia!

Double Eleven is opening their first overseas game studio in Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur. Set to open in the first quarter of 2020, this new studio will provide a full complement of development capabilities including quality assurance, art, software engineering and production.

The Double Eleven Malaysia studio will work alongside main development teams in the United Kingdom on current and next generation titles.

Double Eleven is recruiting full-time staff in development and management positions, including a new Malaysian Studio Head. Here are the jobs currently open for application, and their requirements :

Studio Manager

  • Four or more years of industry experience in a similar role
  • Significant management (people and project) experience
  • An interest in games.
  • Strong general knowledge of the video game production process – ideally a comprehensive end-to-end oversight from within the industry
  • Gamer and consumer oriented, with a deep knowledge of video games market
  • Relevant business degree
  • Experience with SCRUM or AGILE methodologies

Producer

  • Project management skills – initiating, managing and closing software projects.
  • Ability to mediate and arbitrate discussions, getting the right people in the room when needed.
  • Excellent communicator in both content and tone through a variety of methods; online, face to face, presentation or written.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and good organisational skills.
  • Ability to motivate and able to lead by example.
  • Excellent time management, multitasking skills and the ability to process complex information efficiently.
  • A strong interest in games or gaming technologies.
  • Business management experience.
  • Relevant degree qualification.
  • Programming or other technical experience.
  • Strong general knowledge of the video game production process – ideally a comprehensive end-to-end oversight from within the industry.
  • Experience working on titles or projects with live operations.
  • Experience with SCRUM or AGILE methodologies.

Lead Quality Assurance

  • Confident, thorough and articulate communicator; both written and orally
  • Great planning skills
  • Excellent self-management and organisational abilities
  • Second to none for attention to detail
  • Genuine problem solver; no problems, just opportunities
  • Ability to work as part of your own team
  • Has lead or helped to lead a QA team of at least four people, for at least one year from start to finish
  • Has had QA experience on at least 3 console titles
  • Has written and implemented test frameworks

QA Tester

  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent self-management and organisational abilities
  • Aptitude to learn quickly and effectively
  • Ability to remain focused in a team-oriented environment
  • Previous Testing experience within a development environment
  • Skill/experience in any other area of game development and/or strong IT knowledge
  • Knowledge of project management software such as Hansoft, Testrail, Jira, TFS.

Lead Artist

  • Unreal / Unity experience / Blueprints / Python / C#
  • Animation knowledge
  • UI experience
  • ZBrush or other sculpting software experience
  • Shader creation (Substance designer/shader forge etc)
  • Degree level / HND or Art related qualification
  • A portfolio that demonstrates the potential to meet the industry-standard level of art.
  • 6+ years of industry experience and previous Senior or lead roles. Having completed a full production cycle on a published game title.

3D Animator

  • Knowledge of Autodesk Maya
  • Strong Knowledge of game engines (Unity /Unreal).
  • Scripting / blueprints
  • Experience with Motion Builder
  • Degree level / HND or art-related qualification
  • An animation showreel that demonstrates a strong understanding of animation principals and character acting
  • 3+ year industry experience

3D Graduate Artist

  • Exceptional 3D Modelling and Texture creation skills
  • Experience with: 3DMax, Maya, or equivalent, (Maya preferred)
  • Experienced with Photoshop
  • Experience on multiple games and ability to work across varied art styles.
  • Experience with popular game engines, preferably Unity / Unreal.
  • Experience with shaders and real-time rendering pipelines.
  • PBR workflow experience (Substance Painter / Designer)
  • Other visual art skills, e.g. illustration, graphic design, VFX
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills allowing effective collaboration with teams
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and time management skills
  • Strong observation and research skills
  • Strong knowledge of the video game industry and awareness of the video game development processes
  • Unreal / Unity experience / Blueprints
  • Animation knowledge
  • Zbrush or other sculpting software experience
  • Shader creation (Substance designer/shader forge etc)

Celcom + Maxis : First 5G Network Sharing Trial Succeeds!

Celcom and Maxis just announced that they successfully conducted Southeast Asia’s first 5G network sharing trial! Here are the details!

 

Celcom + Maxis : First 5G Network Sharing Trial Succeeds!

Celcom and Maxis conducted Southeast Asia’s first 5G Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) trial in December 2019, following the MoU agreement on 25 November 2019.

It utilised the Maxis 5G site at Seaview Hotel in Kuah, and the Celcom 5G site at The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa, testing their capability to support both Maxis and Celcom users.

MOCN is a sharing mechanism that allows two different core networks to share the same RAN (Radio Active Network).

Using MOCN allows Celcom and Maxis to quickly extend their 5G coverage across Langkawi, just by leveraging their existing 5G sites.

 

Celcom + Maxis : Future 5G Sharing Plans

Moving forward, Celcom and Maxis plans to conduct further RAN sharing trials using 5G Standalone (5G SA) network this quarter, Q1 2020.
