NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX : World’s Smallest AI Supercomputer

On 7 November 2019, NVIDIA introduced the Jetson Xavier NX – the world’s smallest AI supercomputer designed for robotics and embedded computing applications at the edge!

NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX : World’s Smallest AI Supercomputer

At just 70 x 45 mm, the new NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX is smaller than a credit card. Yet it delivers server-class AI performance at up to 21 TOPS, while consuming as little as 10 watts of power.

Short for Nano Xavier, the NX is a low-power version of the Xavier SoC that came up tops in the MLPerf Inference benchmarks.

With its small size and low-power, it opens up the possibility of adding AI on-the-edge computing capabilities to small commercial robots, drones, industrial IoT systems, network video recorders and portable medical devices.

The Jetson Xavier NX can be configured to deliver up to 14 TOPS at 10 W, or 21 TOPS at 15 W. It is powerful enough to run multiple neural networks in parallel, and process data from multiple high-resolution sensors simultaneously.

The NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX runs on the same CUDA-X AI software architecture as all other Jetson processors, and is supported by the NVIDIA JetPack software development kit.

It is pin-compatible with the Jetson Nano, offering up to 15X higher performance than the Jetson TX2 in a smaller form factor.

It is not available for a few more months, but developers can begin development today using the Jetson AGX Xavier Developer Kit, with a software patch to emulate Jetson Xavier NX.

MLPerf Inference 0.5 is the industry’s first independent suite of five AI inference benchmarks.

Applied across a range of form factors and four inference scenarios, the new MLPerf Inference Benchmarks test the performance of established AI applications like image classification, object detection and translation.

 

NVIDIA Wins MLPerf Inference Benchmarks For Datacenter + Edge

Thanks to the programmability of its computing platforms to cater to diverse AI workloads, NVIDIA was the only company to submit results for all five MLPerf Inference Benchmarks.

According to NVIDIA, their Turing GPUs topped all five benchmarks for both datacenter scenarios (server and offline) among commercially-available processors.

Meanwhile, their Jetson Xavier scored highest among commercially-available edge and mobile SoCs under both edge-focused scenarios – single stream and multi-stream.

The new NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX that was announced today is a low-power version of the Xavier SoC that won the MLPerf Inference 0.5 benchmarks.

All of NVIDIA’s MLPerf Inference Benchmark results were achieved using NVIDIA TensorRT 6 deep learning inference software.

Hounded by criticism over fake news and misleading political ads, Facebook is responding with a new multi-colour brand logo to highlight their “clarity”, “empathy” and “support for people and their stories”.

This is really the best thing since sliced bread. Don’t believe us? Look at how much effort they put into it!

 

The New Facebook Multi-Colour Brand Logo

The new Facebook multi-colour brand logo was designed with custom typography and capitalisation to create a visual distinction between Facebook the company, and Facebook the app.

Facebook really spent A LOT of time, money and effort to design that new multi-colour brand logo.

  • Conducting listening tours with their employees as well as people and businesses using their products
  • Bringing together people from across Facebook to design and work together on that logo
  • Refining the design with designers across Facebook to ensure it works in product, hardware, marketing and physical phases

Facebook is spending so much time, money and effort on the rebranding effort, because they want the new brand logo to convey three clear messages :

  • Clarity : Facebook is a brand that simplifies and builds understanding
  • Empathy : Facebook is a system that is respectful of context and environment
  • Creating Space : Facebook supports people and their stories

It is easy to read between the lines, to see how criticism over their refusal to tackle fake news, or even promising not to accept misleading or political ads is a factor.

However, we seriously doubt a rebrand will change anyone’s minds about how Facebook is facilitating the spread of fake news and misleading political ads.

 

The New Facebook Logo In Instagram + WhatsApp

Facebook will be using the new logo to rebrand their other services – Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, etc. Beginning in June 2020, they will include “from Facebook” to all of those services and apps.

And they will start using the new brand logo in their products and marketing materials, including a new company website.

Samsung just released The Present – a short film featuring Jun-myeon Kim (EXO’s Suho), Seul-ki Kim and Su-bin Yoo! Here is the short film in its entirety!

 

The Present with Jun-myeon Kim, Seul-ki Kim + Su-bin Yoo!

Inspired by Samsung’s corporate citizenship vision of Enabling People through themes of determination, entrepreneurship and collaboration, it stars Ha-kyun Shin as Sang-gu, a man who time-travels to present-day Seoul from 1969.

Sang-gu meets young entrepreneurs Ha-neul (Jun-myeon Kim, aka EXO’s Suho), Bo-ra (Seul-ki Kim) and Young-bok (Su-bin Yoo) and ends up helping them as they work to create a thermal imaging camera to use in fire and rescue operations.

“I wanted the film to be entertaining,” noted Director Jin-ho Hur, chiefly known for his work in the melodrama genre, “but I also wanted to accurately capture all the joys and sorrows faced by today’s young people as they go about launching their own business endeavors.”

 

The Present Highlights Samsung Corporate Vision + Ventures

The film is more than just entertainment. It both highlights Samsung’s corporate vision, as well as two key Samsung ventures :

  • Samsung’s venture acceleration program C-Lab Outside, which supports young Korean startups by facilitating optimal environments for them to grow and create new value.
  • Samsung’s IGNIS Thermal Imaging Camera, developed by C-Lab, their in-house corporate incubation program to help firefighters in prevention and rescue activities.

“We hope that ‘The Present’ will encourage young adults who are working hard to keep pursuing their dreams,” said Jae-woong Jeong, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Corporate Communications Team, “and that the film will convey to audiences Samsung’s citizenship vision of Enabling People, which itself reflects the company’s commitment to helping fulfill the innate potential of each and every individual.”

This will help reduce the risks to these public employees who work in dangerous and high-stress situations. This is critical because nearly 3 million deaths occur each year due to occupational accidents.

This new, unnamed Samsung-IBM platform will help governments and enterprises track their employee’s vitals, including heart rate and physical activity. This will allow them to determine if that employee is in distress and requires help.

 

The Samsung – IBM AI IoT Cloud Platform In Use

5G mobile solutions based on the new Samsung-IBM AI IoT platform is being piloted by multiple police forces to monitor their health in real-time, and provide situational awareness insights to first responders and their managers.

The platform can track in real time, the safety and wellness indicators of first responders equipped with Samsung Galaxy Watches and Galaxy smartphones with 5G connectivity.

It can instantly alert emergency managers if there is a significant change in the safety parameters, which may indicate the first responder is in danger of a heart attack, heat exhaustion or other life-threatening events.

This allows them to anticipate potential dangers, and quickly send assistance. This should greatly reduce the risk of death and injuries to their employees.

Dell Technologies just announced a slew of major updates to Dell EMC PowerMax, including Storage Class Memory (SCM) and NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF)!

Industry First : Dell PowerMax With Storage Class Memory + NVMe over Fabrics!

Dell EMC PowerMax is the first-to-market with Storage Class Memory (SCM) as persistent storage. Specifically, they are offering the new dual-port Intel Optane SSDs that they co-developed with Intel.

Dell Technologies also announced that NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) is now available for all PowerMax arrays, delivering true end-to-end NVMe for better performance and lower latency.

The new end-to-end NVMe on PowerMax capability is made possible by :

  • newly-qualified PowerMax 32Gb FC I/O modules,
  • 32Gb Connectrix switches, directors and NVMe host adaptors
  • Dell EMC PowerPath multipathing software

Dell EMC PowerPath is the first enterprise-class SAN multipathing software with full support for NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF).

According to Dell Technologies, this combination of Dell EMC PowerMax and Storage Class Memory will deliver these performance improvements :

  • Up to 15 million IOPS
  • Up to 350 GB/s bandwidth
  • Up to 50% better response time
  • Sub 100 µs (microseconds) read response time

In addition, PowerMax has a built-in machine learning engine that leverages predictive analytics and pattern recognition to automatically place data on the correct media type – SCM or Flash, based on its IO profile.

 

Dell PowerMax Now Supports Automation, Management + Containerised Workloads

Dell EMC PowerMax now allows for automated infrastructure operations and DevOps workflows, including containerised workloads, through these new features :

  • VMware vRealise Orchestrator (vRO) plug-in, available in the VMware Solutions Exchange, allows customers to develop end-to-end automation routines including provisioning, data protection and host operations.
  • Pre-built Ansible modules, available on Github, allow customers to create Playbooks for storage provisioning, snapshots and data management workflows for automated operations.
  • New Container Storage Interface (CSI) plug-in for PowerMax, available on Github, allows customers to provision and manage storage for containerised workloads running on Kubernetes.

 

Dell PowerMax Now Offers Cloud Flexibility

Customers can now incorporate Dell EMC PowerMax into their multi-cloud strategies in a variety of ways.

The newly-released Dell Technologies Cloud Validated Design for Dell EMC PowerMax lets organisations build their own hybrid cloud infrastructure with deployment flexibility for unique workloads, independent capacity scaling and integrated data protection.

Both PowerMax and Unity XT are the first to be validated by VMware Cloud Foundation with Fibre Channel as primary storage, in addition to existing support through Network File System (NFS) protocol.

Dell EMC Cloud Storage Services delivers Dell EMC Storage as a public cloud service for Disaster Recovery across AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.

The Carousell Rights Owners Programme (CROP)

In response to criticism that a number of sellers on their platforms were selling counterfeit goods, Carousell initiated the Carousell Rights Owners Programme (CROP) in December 2018.

Under the Carousell Rights Owners Programme (CROP), trusted brands are given the power to directly remove listings of counterfeits on Carousell with zero processing time.

CROP gives brands assurance that their rights are being protected, and Carousell users the confidence to buy and sell legitimate goods on the platform.

 

Why Carousell Created CROP

Carousell officially had prohibited selling counterfeit goods or replicas that violate intellectual property rights. However, prior to CROP, it required a lengthy process of flagging the item to the actual takedown by the Carousell brand protection team.

CROP drastically reduces the time needed to takedown counterfeit listings, and obviates the need for them to expand their brand protection team. In the last nine months, brands have used CROP to take down 13,000 listings.

Carousell has only allowed a selected number of brands to join CROP and access its content moderation tools. They include Nike, Grab and luxury group Kering which owns brands like Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta.

However, Carousell did not detail any recourse for sellers whose genuine items were wrongly identified as counterfeits, and taken down by CROP.

Samsung Exynos 990 : Everything You Need To Know!

Samsung just unveiled details of the Exynos 990 mobile platform, which boasts the new Arm Mali-G77 GPU and a new dual-core NPU!

Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about the new Samsung Exynos 990 mobile platform!

 

The Samsung Exynos 990 Mobile Platform

The Samsung Exynos 990 builds upon Samsung’s first mobile platform with an integrated 5G modem – the Exynos 980, but focusing on performance instead of 5G connectivity.

It boasts a range of significant improvements – new Samsung Mongoose 5 (Exynos M5) and ARM Cortex-A76 cores, and a new Arm Mali-G77 GPU.

Faster Processor + GPU

According to Samsung, its new custom Mongoose 5 (Exynos M5) cores are 20% faster than the Mongoose 4 (Exynos M4) cores used in the flagship-class Exynos 9825 used in the Galaxy Note 10 smartphones!

Its Arm Mali-G77 GPU uses the new Valhall architecture, and promises to offer a 20% boost in graphics performance or power efficiency.

Faster LPDDR5 Memory

The Exynos 990 will be the first Samsung mobile platform to use the new LPDDR5 memory, which offers a 31% higher clock speed – increased from 2093 MHz to 2750 MHz.

This allows it to deliver up to 5,500 Mbps or 687.5 MB/s in memory bandwidth. It should also allow for lower power consumption.

Faster NPU + DSP

Its AI capabilities also received a big boost with a new dual-core NPU and improved digital signal processor (DSP) that can process over 10 trillion operations (TOPS) per second!

No Built-In Modem

Interestingly, the Samsung Exynos 990 does not appear to have a built-in modem, not even for 3G and 4G connectivity.

Instead, it appears to be designed to be paired with the new Samsung Exynos Modem 5123 multi-mode 5G modem with transfer rates of up to 7.35 Gbps in mmWave, and 5.1 Gbps in sub-6GHz.

120 Hz Display Capability

In addition to 10-bit video and HDR display support, the Exynos 990 comes with a 120 Hz refresh rate driver.

Better Photographic Capabilities

Its advanced image signal processor (ISP) not only supports up to six image sensors, it can process images from three of them concurrently! It supports sensor resolutions of up to 108 MP.

Its Multi-Format Codec supports encoding and decoding of 8K videos at up to 30 fps, or 4K UHD videos at up to 120 frames per second. It also supports HDR10+ with dynamic mapping in videos.

Samsung Exynos Modem 5123 – What You Need To Know!

Together with the Exynos 990 mobile platform, Samsung is introducing a companion multi-mode 5G modem chip – the Exynos Modem 5123.

The Samsung Exynos Modem 5123

The Samsung Exynos Modem 5123 appears to be a companion chip for Exynos 990, which lacks 4G or 5G connectivity. But it could potentially be used to add 5G connectivity to other 4G-only mobile SoCs.

It is one of the first few 5G modem chips built on the 7 nm EUV process, and supports all major wireless standards, from old-school 2G GSM/CDMA to 4G LTE and 5G on both sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums.

Its 5G capabilities have been significantly improved over the Exynos Modem 5100, with Sub-6GHz speeds of up to 5.1 Gbps and mmWave speeds of up to 7.35 Gbps.

It also received a big boost in 4G LTE bandwidth, using 1024-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), which is probably a first in the industry.

10GB + 12GB Samsung LPDDR4X uMCP Memory Details!

Samsung just announced that they have begun mass-producing LPDDR4X uMCP memory in 10GB and 12GB capacities!

10GB + 12GB Samsung LPDDR4X uMCP Memory

The Samsung LPDDR4X uMCP memory is a UFS-based package that uses multiple LPDDR4X (low-power double data rate 4X) memory chips.

Samsung actually introduced a 12GB LPDDR4X uMCP memory about seven months ago. That package used six 16Gb LPDDR4X DRAM chips to achieve the 12 GB capacity.

Now, Samsung has a new higher-capacity 24Gb LPDDR4X DRAM chip – that’s 3 GB of memory on a single chip. This new chip uses the 1y-nanometer process technology, which can be either 14 nm or 16 nm.

The new 12GB Samsung LPDDR4X uMCP memory (KM8F8001MM) combines just four of the new 24Gb LPDDR4X DRAM chips, and ultra-fast eUFS 3.0 NAND storage into a single package.

With a data transfer speed of 4,266 Mbps, or 533 MB/s, this new Samsung LPDDR4X uMCP is designed to support 4K video recording, AI and machine learning capabilities in mid-range smartphones.

It is currently available in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Korea.

 

DFS Flex on Demand

The DFS Flex on Demand model is available for all Dell Technologies storage solutions and certain storage products.

It lets customers pay only for the storage capacity needed, which reduces costs associated with over provisioning.

More importantly, DFS Flex on Demand provides instant access to additional buffer capacity during spikes in usage, with payments adjusting to match actual usage.

This model offers a low capacity commitment and a flexible payment period, so customers pay only for what they consume.

This program is currently available in Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

 

Dell Working Capital Solutions

Dell Technologies is also offering end-to-end channel financing through the Dell Working Capital Solutions program.

Dell partners can obtain adaptive credit capacity with the ability to scale their credit limit up or down. It also provides extended payment terms, helping Dell partners manage cash flow and take on bigger deals from their customers.

How AMD CPUs Work In A Secured-core PC Device!

Microsoft just announced their partnership with AMD, Intel and Qualcomm to protect the PC’s firmware and operating system through the Secured-core PC initiative.

With help from Akash Malhotra, AMD Director of Security Product Management, here is everything you need to know about how AMD CPUs work in a Secured-core PC device!

 

What Is A Secured-core PC Device?

Secured-core PC is a new Microsoft initiative that they just announced. In partnership with their hardware partners, they aim to create a specific set of requirements for devices that are meant for secure use.

These requirements will apply the best practices in data security – isolation and minimal trust in the firmware layer and the device core that underpins the Windows operating system.

Secured-core PC devices are targeted at industries like financial services, government and healthcare, and anyone who work with valuable IP, customer or personal data. They would also be useful for persons of interest, who would be high-value targets for hackers and nation-state attackers.

What Security Features Are Already In AMD CPUs?

Before we look at how AMD CPUs work in a Secured-core PC device, let’s take a look at what security features they ship with :

SKINIT: The SKINIT instruction helps create a “root of trust” starting with an initially untrusted operating mode. SKINIT reinitializes the processor to establish a secure execution environment for a software component called the secure loader (SL) and starts execution of the SL in a way to help prevent tampering SKINIT extends the hardware-based root of trust to the secure loader.

Secure Loader (SL): The AMD Secure Loader (SL) is responsible for validating the platform configuration by interrogating the hardware and requesting configuration information from the DRTM Service.

AMD Secure Processor (ASP): AMD Secure Processor is dedicated hardware available in each SOC which helps enable secure boot up from BIOS level into the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). Trusted applications can leverage industry-standard APIs to take advantage of the TEE’s secure execution environment.

AMD-V with GMET: AMD-V is set of hardware extensions to enable virtualization on AMD platforms. Guest Mode Execute Trap (GMET) is a silicon performance acceleration feature added in next gen Ryzen which enables hypervisor to efficiently handle code integrity check and help protect against malware.

 

How AMD CPUs Work In A Secured-core PC Device

In a Secured-core PC powered by an AMD CPU, the firmware and bootloader will initialise, and shortly after, the system will transition into a trusted state with the hardware forcing the firmware down a well-known and measured code path.

That means the firmware is authenticated and measured by the security block in the AMD CPU, and that measurement is stored securely in TPM for verification and attestation by the operating system.

At any point after that, the operating system can request that the AMD security block remeasure and compare the firmware against the old values, before executing further operations. This way, the operating system can help verify the integrity of the system over time.

In AMD processors, the firmware protection is handled by the AMD Dynamic Root of Trust Measurement (DRTM) Service Block that is made up of SKINIT CPU instruction, ASP and the AMD Secure Loader (SL).

This block is responsible for creating and maintain a chain of trust between components by performing these functions:

  • Measure and authenticate firmware and bootloader
  • Gather the following system configuration for the OS, which will in turn validate them against its security requirements and store information for future verification.
    • Physical memory map
    • PCI configuration space location
    • Local APIC configuration
    • I/O APIC configuration
    • IOMMU configuration / TMR Configuration
    • Power management configuration

 

AMD SMM Supervisor

Although the method above protects the firmware, AMD points out that the System Management Mode (SMM) also needs to be protected.

SMM is a special-purpose x86 CPU mode that handles power management, hardware configuration, thermal monitoring, etc. Because SMM code executes in the highest privilege level and is invisible to the operating system, it is an attractive target for attackers.

To help isolate SMM, AMD introduced a security module called AMD SMM Supervisor that will :

  • Block SMM from being able to modify Hypervisor or OS memory. An exception is a small coordinate communication buffer between the two.
  • Prevent SMM from introducing new SMM code at run time
  • Block SMM from accessing DMA, I/O, or registers that can compromise the Hypervisor or OS

Microsoft and their hardware partners just announced the Secured-core PC initiative to combat threats that target the PC’s firmware and operating system.

With help from David Weston, Partner Director of Microsoft OS Security, here is everything you need to know about the Secured-core PC initiative!

 

What Is The Secured-core PC Initiative?

Secured-core PC is a new Microsoft initiative that they just announced. In partnership with their hardware partners, they aim to create a specific set of requirements for devices that are meant for secure use.

These requirements will apply the best practices in data security – isolation and minimal trust in the firmware layer and the device core that underpins the Windows operating system.

Secured-core PC devices will be targeted at industries like financial services, government and healthcare, and anyone who work with valuable IP, customer or personal data. They would also be useful for persons of interest, who would be high-value targets for hackers and nation-state attackers.

 

Is There A Need For Secured-core PC?

As more protection is built into the operating system and connected services, attackers are exploring other methods with firmware emerging as a top target.

The NIST’s National Vulnerability Database shows a near 5X increase in the number of firmware vulnerabilities in the last 3 years :

In late 2018, security researchers discovered that the hacking group Strontium targeted systems in the wild with malware that made use of firmware vulnerabilities.

Because it targeted firmware, the malicious code was hard to detect, and difficult to remove. It even persists after the operating system is reinstalled, or the storage drive replaced!

 

Why Is Firmware The New Target?

Firmware is used to initialise the hardware and software when a device is started up. It therefore has a higher level of access and privileges than the hypervisor and operating system kernel.

This means firmware attacks that succeed can undermine protective mechanisms like Secure Boot that the hypervisor or operating system use to protect against malware.

Firmware attacks can more easily evade endpoint protection and detection solutions, because the latter run under the operating system layer, and therefore have limited visibility of the firmware layer.

 

What Is A Secured-core PC Made Up Of?

Secured-core PCs will combine multiple layers of protection – identity, virtualisation, operating system, hardware and firmware – to prevent attacks, rather than simply detecting them.

They all ensure that the device will boot securely and is protected against firmware vulnerabilities, shielding the operating system from attacks and preventing unauthorised access to the device and data.

System Guard Secure Launch

Microsoft is now implementing System Guard Secure Launch in Windows 10 as a key Secured-core PC requirement.

System Guard uses the Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement (DRTM) capabilities built into the latest processors from AMD, Intel and Qualcomm, to protect the boot process from firmware attacks.

The firmware is used to start the hardware, and then shortly after, re-initialise the system into a trusted state. This helps to limit the trust assigned to the firmware, greatly mitigating against firmware attacks.

This method also helps protect the integrity of the Virtualisation-Based Security (VBS) feature in the hypervisor against firmware vulnerabilities. This is critical because VBS is used for important OS security functions like Windows Defender Credential Guard and Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI).

Trusted Platform Module 2.0

Microsoft is also implementing Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (TPM) as a device requirement for Secured-core PCs.

It is used to measure the components that are used during the secure launch process, allowing for zero trust networks using System Guard runtime attestation.

 

Secured-core PC Availability

Secured-core PC devices are available from Dell, Dynabook, HP, Lenovo, Panasonic and Microsoft’s own Surface brand.

The Official NVIDIA EGX Briefing @ MWC Los Angeles 2019

Before the official announcement, NVIDIA gave us an exclusive briefing on their EGX edge computing platform. We are sharing it with you, so you can hear it directly from Justin Boitano, General Manager of NVIDIA’s Enterprise & Edge Computing division.

Here is a summary of what NVIDIA unveiled at MWC Los Angeles 2019 :

NVIDIA EGX Early Adopters

NVIDIA actually announced EGX at Computex Taipei in June 2019 – a combination of the NVIDIA CUDA-X software and NVIDIA-certified GPU servers and devices.

Now, they are announcing that Walmart, BMW, Proctor & Gamble, Samsung Electronics and ETT East have adopted the EGX platform, and so have the cities of San Francisco and Las Vegas.

  • Samsung Electronics — The Korean electronics giant is using AI at the edge for highly complex semiconductor design and manufacturing processes.
  • BMW — The German automaker is using intelligent video analytics in its South Carolina manufacturing facility to automate inspection. With EGX gathering data from multiple cameras and other sensors in inspection lines, BMW is helping ensure only the highest quality automobiles leave the factory floor.
  • NTT East — The Japanese telecom services giant is using EGX in its data centers to develop new AI-powered services in remote areas through its broadband access network. Using the EGX platform, NTT East will provide remote populations the computing power and connectivity required to build and deploy a wide range of AI applications at the edge.
  • Procter & Gamble — The world’s leading consumer goods company is working with NVIDIA to develop AI-enabled applications on top of the EGX platform for the inspection of products and packaging to help ensure they meet the highest safety and quality standards. P&G is using NVIDIA EGX to analyze thousands of hours of footage from inspection lines and immediately flag imperfections.
  • Las Vegas — The city is using EGX to capture vehicle and pedestrian data to ensure safer streets and expand economic opportunity. Las Vegas plans to use the data to autonomously manage signal timing and other operational capabilities.
  • San Francisco — The city’s Union Square Business Improvement District is using EGX to capture real-time pedestrian counts for local retailers, providing them a powerful business intelligence tool for engaging with their customers more effectively.

NVIDIA EGX Case Study : Walmart

Walmart is a pioneer user of EGX, deploying it in its Levittown, New York, Intelligent Retail Lab — a fully-operational grocery store where it’s exploring the ways AI can further improve in-store shopping experiences.

Using EGX’s advanced AI and edge capabilities, Walmart is able to compute in real time more than 1.6 terabytes of data generated each second, and can use AI to :

  • automatically alert associates to restock shelves,
  • open up new checkout lanes,
  • retrieve shopping carts, and
  • ensure product freshness in meat and produce departments.

NVIDIA EGX Partnership With Microsoft

NVIDIA announced a collaboration with Microsoft to enable the closer integration between Microsoft Azure and the NVIDIA EGX platform, to advance edge-to-cloud AI computing capabilities for their clients.

The NVIDIA Metropolis video analytics application framework, which runs on EGX, has been optimized to work with Microsoft’s Azure IoT Edge, Azure Machine Learning solutions and a new form factor of the Azure Data Box Edge appliance powered by NVIDIA T4 GPUs.

In addition, NVIDIA-certified off-the-shelf servers — optimised to run Azure IoT Edge and ML services — are now available from more than a dozen leading OEMs, including Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Lenovo.

NVIDIA EGX Partnership With Ericsson

NVIDIA also announced that they are collaborating with Ericsson on developing virtualised RAN technologies.

Their ultimate goal is to commercialise those virtualised RAN technologies to deliver 5G networks with flexibility and shorter time-to-market for new services like augmented reality, virtual reality and gaming.

NVIDIA EGX Partnership With Red Hat

Finally, NVIDIA announced a collaboration with Red Hat to deliver software-defined 5G wireless infrastructure running on Red Hat OpenShift to the telecom industry.

Their customers will be able to use NVIDIA EGX and Red Hat OpenShift to deploy NVIDIA GPUs to accelerate AI, data science and machine learning at the edge.

The critical element enabling 5G providers to move to cloud-native infrastructure is NVIDIA Aerial. This software developer kit, also announced today, allows providers to build and deliver high-performance, software-defined 5G wireless RAN by delivering two essential advancements.

They are a low-latency data path directly from Mellanox network interface cards to GPU memory, and a 5G physical layer signal-processing engine that keeps all data within the GPU’s high-performance memory.

Beginning 28 October 2019, users will be no longer be allow to upload new content. You can only share information with your group using email.

And on 14 December 2019, Yahoo Groups will permanently remove and delete all user content.

Unlike what some major news websites have stated, Yahoo Groups isn’t really shutting down. At least not yet.

Yahoo Groups will continue to exist. However, there will be significant changes on how things will work :

  • There will no longer be any public groups.
  • All public groups will be made private or restricted
  • You will be allowed to search for private groups.
  • However, new group members will need to request an invite, or be invited by a group administrator.
  • Group administrators will still be able to manage group settings.
  • However, some admin functionality will be limited or eliminated.

B. Downloading Files From Yahoo Groups

  1. On your group’s main page, click Files.
  2. Click a file you want to download.
  3. Select Save File and click OK.

C. Download Your Yahoo Groups Data

  1. Go to the Privacy Dashboard page of your Yahoo Groups
  2. Scroll down to “Download a summary of your data“.
  3. Click Request a download.

  1. Click Next.
  2. Enter an email address to receive the notification when the download is ready. It can take up to 30 days for a request to process.
  3. Click Request Download.
  4. Once you receive the notification email, go to the Privacy Dashboard page of your Yahoo Groups.
  5. Scroll down to “Download a summary of your data“.
  6. Click Your download requests.

Kingston DC500 SSDs Are Now Certified VMware Ready!

After the VMware Ready validation process, the Kingston DC500 family of enterprise SSDs are now certified for VMware vSAN and vSphere in production environments.

PowerProtect DD is scalable, with grow-in-place capacity expansion from 1 terabyte all the way to 1.25 petabytes.

Data Protection For Multi-Cloud Workloads

PowerProtect DD supports multiple public clouds, and can natively tier deduplicated data. It can also scale across on-premise and hybrid cloud environments.

Single Pane of Glass Management

Its PowerProtect DD Management Center allows for the aggregated management for multiple systems. Customers can monitor the health and status of all their appliances on-premise and in the cloud, as well as manage capacity and replications.

Dell EMC also announced improvements to Cyber Recovery and PowerProtect Software :

  • Cyber Recovery can now automate restores from a secure and isolated vault, giving customers an additional layer of data protection
  • PowerProtect Software adds more integrated with VMware vSphere, offering simplified data protection management and self-service recovery
  • PowerProtect Software also now supports Dell EMC Cloud Disaster Recovery, allowing the automated disaster recovery of VMware workloads in the public cloud

Have you ever wondered who owns 4G technology? There are claims that 4G belongs to four US telcos – AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint, that are forcing countries like China to pay them TRILLIONS in royalties.

We take a look at that claim, and find out who REALLY owns 4G!

 

4G Belongs To AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile + Sprint?

As the US-Chinese trade tensions drag out, lots of fake stories about both sides are circulating online.

One of them is the claim that 4G belongs to four US telcos – AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint, and countries like China are forced to pay them trillions of dollars every year.

4G belongs to United States’ AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint. The world’s countries pay more than 10,000 trillion yuan in copyright fees to the four companies in the United States. China’s 4G pays US$100 million in annual copyright fees to US companies.

If the countries around the world switch to Huawei 5G, the United States will lose more than 10,000 billion yuan of foreign exchange each year, which is set at 20% of the annual GDP of the United States.

Therefore, the United States will not allow 5G in the world.

the United States will destroy Huawei to protect the interests of the United States;

i.e. stopping the loss of at least 20% of USA’s GDP.

What a big bully !!!.

Let the world know the true & ulterior reason for USA’s insistence on bringing down Huawei.

4G Does Not Belong To US Telcos

First of all, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint are US telecommunications companies, telcos, that operate mobile networks in the United States.

These US telcos may own the equipment (like the cell tower above) that power those 4G LTE networks, but they do NOT own the 4G technologies those equipment were built around.

They are like any other mobile telcos around the world. They provide the 4G LTE service your mobile phones use to make calls and provide mobile Internet connectivity.

 

So Who REALLY Owns 4G?

4G technology is not owned by any particular company, but is protected by about 1,400 patents owned by a multitude of companies worldwide.

In 2011, an analyst Peter Misek crawled through all of those patents to find out who known how many of those patents, and he summarised his findings in this pie chart :

The top 3 owners of 4G patents, in order of patent numbers (not importance or value), are :

  • LG Electronics
  • Qualcomm
  • Motorola (now owned by Lenovo, although most of its patents are owned by Google)

Notice how there are no telcos in the pie chart? That’s because telcos do NOT develop mobile technologies… they don’t even make the equipment based on these mobile technologies!

 

How Much Is Paid For 4G Technology?

The other part of the claim is that the world pays about US$1,450 trillion per year in 4G licensing fees per year, with China paying US$100 million per year.

Globally

Analysts estimate that about 15-16% of a 4G smartphone’s PROFIT margin goes towards licensing fees.

In 2018, the global smartphone sales was US$522 billion, and smartphone profit margins are roughly 65% on average. That would mean about US$51 billion would have been paid in 4G licensing fees in 2018.

Obviously, US$51 billion is a tremendous amount of money, but it is far less than what the fake story claims – US$1,450 trillion.

In China

In 2017, China sold US$152.3 billion worth of smartphones. That would mean smartphones sold in China (including those made by Apple) would have contributed about US$15 billion in 4G licensing fees.

That is far more than the fake claim of US$100 million per year…

 

Who Created This 4G Belongs To US Telcos Hoax?

This is yet another piece of spurious Chinese propaganda, probably coined by China’s so-called 50 Cent Army.

Crudely-written with nonsensical numbers, it has nevertheless spread on social media, which is why we are spending the time and effort to debunk it.

Irrespective of what we may think about the Trump ban on HUAWEI and other trade war actions, we should focus on the FACTS, and not let fake stories like this sway our opinions.

What Is The Alibaba Hanguang 800?

The Alibaba Hanguang 800 is a neural processing unit (NPU) for AI inference applications. It was specifically designed to accelerate machine learning and AI inference tasks.

 

What Does Hanguang Mean?

The name 含光 (Hanguang) literally means “contains light“.

While the name may suggest that it uses photonics, that light-based technology is still at least a decade from commercialisation.

 

What Are The Hanguang 800 Specifications?

Not much is known about the Hanguang 800, other than that it has 17 billion transistors, and is fabricated on the 12 nm process technology.

Also, it is designed for inferencing only, unlike the HUAWEI Ascend 910 AI chip which can handle both training and inference.

Who Designed The Hanguang 800?

The Hanguang 800 was developed over a period of 7 months, by Alibaba’s research unit, T-Head, followed by a 3-month tape-out.

T-Head, whose Chinese name is Pintougehoney badger in English, is responsible for designing chips for cloud and edge computing under Alibaba Cloud / Aliyun.

Earlier this year, T-Head revealed a high-performance IoT processor called XuanTie 910.

Based on the RISC-V open-source instruction set, 16-core XuanTie 910 is targeted at heavy-duty IoT applications like edge servers, networking gateways, and self-driving automobiles.

 

How Fast Is Hanguang 800?

Alibaba claims that the Hanguang 800 “largely” outpaces the industry average performance, with image processing efficiency about 12X better than GPUs :

  • Computational efficiency : 500 IPS per watt (Resnet-50 Inference Test)

Where Will Hanguang 800 Be Used?

The Hanguang 800 chip will be used exclusively by Alibaba to power their own business operations, especially in product search and automatic translation, personalised recommendations and advertising.

According to Alibaba, merchants upload a billion product images to Taobao every day. It used to take their previous platform an hour to categorise those pictures, and then tailor search and personalise recommendations for millions of Taobao customers.

With Hanguang 800, they claim that the Taboo platform now takes just 5 minutes to complete the task – a 12X reduction in time!

Alibaba Cloud will also be using it in their smart city projects. They are already using it in Hangzhou, where they previously used 40 GPUs to process video feeds with a latency of 300 ms.

After migrating to four Hanguang 800 NPUs, they were able to process the same video feeds with half the latency – just 150 ms.

 

Can We Buy Or Rent The Hanguang 800?

No, Alibaba will not be selling the Hanguang 800 NPU. Instead, they are offering it as a new AI cloud computing service.

Developers can now make a request for a Hanguang 800 cloud compute quota, which Alibaba Cloud claims is 100% more cost-effective than traditional GPUs.

 

Are There No Other Alternatives For Alibaba?

In our opinion, this is Alibaba’s way of preparing for an escalation of the US-Chinese trade war that has already savaged HUAWEI.

While Alibaba certainly have a few AI inference accelerator alternatives, from AMD and NVIDIA for example, it makes sense for them to spend money and time developing their own AI inference chip.

In the long term, the Chinese government wants to build a domestic capability to design and fabricate their own computer chips for national security reasons.

3rd Gen X-Dragon Architecture by Alibaba Cloud Explained!

At the Apsara Conference 2019, Alibaba Cloud announced that they will be introducing the 3rd Gen X-Dragon Architecture for their cloud servers!

Here is a quick PRIMER on the new 3rd Gen X-Dragon Architecture!

 

What Is X-Dragon?

X-DragonShenlong in Chinese – is a proprietary bare metal server architecture developed by Alibaba Cloud for their cloud computing requirements.

Built around a custom X-Dragon MOC card, it delivers what Alibaba Cloud calls Elastic Compute Service (ECS) capability in a bare metal server.

The ECS bare metal instances it offers combine the benefits of bare metal servers, and virtual machines.

For example, it offers direct access to CPU and RAM resources without virtualisation overheads that bare metal servers offer, with the instant deployment and image migration capabilities of virtual machines.

The downsides? ECS bare metal instances, once deployed, cannot be upgraded or downgraded. In addition, if there is a hardware failure, a failover occurs and the data remains stored in the instance’s storage drives.

 

What’s New In The 3rd Gen X-Dragon Architecture?

Basically – SPEED.

According to Alibaba Cloud, the 3rd Gen X-Dragon architecture is able to increase Queries Per Second (QPS) by 30% and decrease latency by 60% in e-commerce scenarios.

In tandem, they also announced the 6th Gen ECS instance, which delivers a 20% boost in computing power, a 30% reduction in memory latency, and a 70% reduction in storage IO latency.

Not new, but also important is the fact that because it is cloud-native by design, it eliminates power wastage from idle bare metal servers. Alibaba Cloud claims that alone reduces the unit computing cost by 50%.

 

3rd Gen X-Dragon Architecture Availability

Alibaba Cloud will start rolling out the 3rd Gen X-Dragon architecture upgrade to millions of their cloud servers around the world from 2020 onwards.

Kambyan ManUsIA + AleX Laser Cutting Drone Technology!

Kambyan Network recently invited us to a demonstration of their AleX laser cutting drone, which is designed to harvest oil palm fruits.

They also invited David Cirulli from the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and Associate Professor Sagaya Amalathas from Taylors University, to talk about the ManUsIA digital agriculture technology and the future jobs available to young teens today.

 

Kambyan ManUsIA Digital Agriculture

Kambyan Network has been working with David Cirulli of the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Singapore to develop what they call the ManUsIA digital agriculture technology.

Manusia is actually a Malay word for human, and it is an apt moniker because according to David Cirulli, ManUsIA stands for Man Using Intelligent Applications.

ManUsIA is a digital agriculture platform that Kambyan is developing as a SPaaS (Solution Platform as a Service) offering to improve yield and reduce manpower in agriculture.

It combines the use of drones with artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities on the cloud to make use of surveillance data and weather information to maximise yield and reduce manpower requirements for dirty, difficult and dangerous jobs.

ManUsIA will start with drones that are remotely controlled using mobile device integration, and eventually hope to integrate intelligent drones that work independently.

 

Future Jobs For Teens Today

Kambyan also invited Associate Professor Dr. Sagaya Amalathas, a Programme Director at Taylors University to talk about future jobs that teens today should consider.

She points out that the future will be highly dependent on new digital skills in the areas of Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, as well as Blockchain technology, and the Internet of Things.

She also shared some really useful information on what careers will remain stable in the fast-changing times, and what jobs will be lost and what new opportunities will arise.

 

The reason why Kambyan invited her was because their training arm, Adroit College offers a Drone Operator & Robotics course.

The Professional Certificate in Robotic Process Automation – Field Operations (RPA-FO) course combines a 5-week intensive workshop with an apprenticeship and internship program at Kambyan, allowing the student to graduate with a Professional Certificate in 11 months.

 

Kambyan AleX Laser Cutting Drone Demonstration

The star of the event was the Kambyan AleX laser cutting drone – the Airborne Laser Cutter Mark 1.

Designed to be a laser harvesting drone for the oil palm industry, it weighs 3 kilograms and is approximately 70 cm in diameter.

Powered by a 150 watt pulsed laser in the operational model, it is capable of cutting through 6 inches of plant material.

Piloted remotely by a drone operator in the current iteration, it will be used to trim the fronds of the oil palm trees and cut through the stem of oil palm fruit bunches to harvest them.

Using drones will not only reduce manpower, it will allow plantations to let their oil palm trees grow much higher, reducing the need to cut them down so often.

This will increase profit over the long term, while reducing the oil palm industry’s impact on the environment… in particular their contribution to the slash and burn activity that results in terrible haze in Southeast Asia.

In the demo, they used a less powerful laser for safety reasons. But as this video shows, that itself is a danger!

Fortunately, the operational drone uses a much more powerful laser to cut at a safer distance. This would prevent the drone from getting hit by falling oil palm fruits or flying debris.

Even though many of us have long ditched Yahoo Mail for Gmail, it still commands a significant number of users. And today, they announced a new Yahoo Mail app to break through Gmail’s dominance.

 

Yes, Yahoo Mail Is Still Alive

Yahoo Mail has been so out of sight, we could be forgiven for thinking that they went extinct or absorbed by another entity, like the once-famous Hotmail.

Yet, Yahoo Mail remains popular amongst the older generation that grew up with it, in spite of Gmail’s dominance.

 

The New Yahoo Mail App

Today on 24 September 2019, Yahoo launched a new version of their Mail app, that they promise will “redefine the way people use their inboxes in an era of Internet and Inbox overload“.

The new Yahoo Mail app will organise the email clutter for you, and empower you to personalise and control your inboxes, so you can focus on what matters most.

The new app will automatically group your messages into Views, such as Travel and Attachments. It will also let you control email overload by introducing an easy, one-tap unsubscribe tool.

Design refresh and deeper customisation

  • It will have a revamped interface that is built with today’s taller mobile screens in mind allows for intuitive one-hand usage with the new navigation bar at the bottom of the screen.
  • The layout will be cleaner, colourful, easier to use, and customisable.
  • Users can also personalise their push notifications to highlight which type of mail they wish to be alerted to (personal vs. promotional) and tailor their inbox with custom colour themes and sounds.
  • There is also a drag and drop interface with fun animations.

Photos and files in one place

  • Now there’s one View that allows easy access and navigation of all mail attachments, including important files, travel documents, event tickets, and photos. The information users need is always at hand.

Industry-leading management of email subscriptions

  • With a View for subscriptions, users can browse the emails they’re subscribed to and unsubscribe from any newsletter with a single tap without leaving the app.

In addition, you can add and use your Gmail and Outlook accounts, making the Yahoo Mail app a multi-purpose inbox for all of your emails.

 

New Yahoo Mail App Availability

The new Yahoo Mail app will start rolling out progressively starting 24 September 2019, on both Android and iOS.

Microsoft Asia and IDC Asia Pacific just released findings of a study which suggests that higher education institutions in APAC can double their rate of innovation with AI (artificial intelligence)!

 

APAC Higher Education Can Double Innovation With AI!

The Microsoft-IDC study – Future Ready Skills : Assessing APAC Education Sector’s Use of AI – found that AI (artificial intelligence) will help double the rate of innovation for higher education institutions.

This involves using AI to better manage student performance and enhance student engagements, while optimising operations to reduce work amongst the faculty and administrative staff.

Based on the study, the top business drivers to adopt AI in higher education include better student engagement, higher funding, and accelerated innovation.

Institutions that have already adopted AI say that they are seeing improvements in the rate of 11% to 28% in those areas.

By 2021, Microsoft and IDC predict that institutions using AI will experience the biggest jump in funding – 3.7X, which is higher than most industry sectors in Asia Pacific.

 

AI In Higher Education Case Study

Developing a globally engaged citizenry is one of Japan’s key priorities. However, many students avoid studying or going abroad, as doing so can delay them from taking classes they need to graduate.

The Faculty of Engineering at Hokkaido University, for example, has chosen to implement AI as part of its mission to encourage students to study abroad.

They developed a Microsoft Azure-based e-learning system that leverages AI and automation capabilities. This system lets students keep up with coursework back home, with course preparation streamlined from days to mere hours.

 

AI Skills Required For The Future Of Higher Education

Both education leaders and their staff are equally positive about the impact of AI on higher education jobs.

A large majority (61%) of both segments believe that AI will either help them do their jobs better, or reduce repetitive tasks.

21% of education leaders, and 13% of their staff also agree that AI will help create new jobs in higher education.

However, the requisite skills for an AI future are currently in shortage. The top three skills that education leaders believe will face a shortage in the next three years include :

  • IT skills and programming
  • Digital skills
  • Quantitative, analytical and statistical skills

The Study also noted a disconnect with the perception of education leaders of their staff’s willingness to reskill to adapt to an AI future.

26% of education leaders believe that their staff have no interest to reskill, but in reality, only 11% of their staff had no interest to reskill.

The Schaffhausen Institute of Technology – NUS Partnership

As part of the Acronis CyberFit Week, the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology announced a partnership with NUS, the National University of Singapore, for their Master of Computing programme. Here are the full details!

 

The Schaffhausen Institute of Technology

The Schaffhausen Institute of Technology is a private research and higher-education institute, founded by Serguei Beloussov, the CEO and Founder of Acronis and Parallels.

Located in the heart of Switzerland near the spectacular Rhine Falls, it is just 35 minutes from Zurich and an hour or two away from major cities in Europe.

Its stated mission is to advance knowledge and discovery in science and technology, with open research challenges and the potential for commercial applications.

Therefore, the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology will feature educational programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD levels, as well as research laboratories and a technology park.

 

The Schaffhausen Institute of Technology – NUS Partnership

The Schaffhausen Institute of Technology – NUS partnership involves the enrolment of selected SIT students into the NUS Master of Computing program.

These selected students will embark as full-time Master students in NUS Singapore, and will complete both taught courses and a dissertation.

The students can select from one of the four specialisation tracks the NUS Master of Computing offers in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Security and Artificial Intelligence.

This partnership will see NUS helping the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology co-train their initial batches of Master of Computing students.

Acronis Cyber Penthouse with Williams F1 Racing Team!

As the Williams F1 Racing Team gears up for the Singapore F1 Grand Prix, they joined Acronis CEO and Founder Serguei Beloussov in the grand opening of the new Acronis Cyber Penthouse!

In the exclusive invitation-only event, we got up close and personal with Serguei Beloussov, Williams F1 CIO Graeme Hackland… and of course, the Williams F1 drivers – Robert Kubica and George Russell!

 

The Acronis Cyber Penthouse

Located at the very top of Suntec Tower 3, the Acronis Cyber Penthouse is (aptly for a data protection company) accessible only through two security layers, including a special lift.

This is because the Cyber Penthouse is where Acronis engineers work. In his keynote, Acronis CEO and Founder Serguei Beloussov pointed out that they get the best offices, even better than his own office!

Serguei also shared that Acronis just won a new round of investment worth US$ 147 million, led by Goldman Sachs. The funds would be used to acquire companies and expand the Acronis R&D team, as well as to grow their business in North America.

 

Graeme Hackland on the Williams F1 + Acronis Partnership

Williams F1 Racing Team CIO Graeme Hackland spoke about the importance of data collection to the team’s performance, and how much data they now collect.

He also revealed that the team was hit by two ransomware attacks in 2014, losing data to one of them. Hence, they turned to Acronis to protect their data.

Acronis now protects all of their mailboxes, more than 200 of their servers, and over 650 team workstations. Deploying Acronis Backup has also cut down their backup window from days to just minutes.

 

Acronis Launches Cyber Penthouse With Williams F1 + Infocomm

Acronis then formally launched their Cyber Penthouse with CEO and Founder Serguei Beloussov, and Williams F1 CIO Graeme Hackland, as well as Howie Lau, the Chief Industry Development Officer of Infocomm Media Development Authority.

 

Robert Kubica + George Russell Face Off In The Läderach Chocolate Challenge!

Williams F1 drivers, Robert Kubica and George Russell, who popped over for the launch, sportingly agreed to a friendly contest using Läderach chocolate!

It sure was great to catch these guys in a carefree, fun moment away from the Grand Prix races.

Unfortunately, I never got the chance to get some photos with them. But I scored this neat wheel nut signed by both of them instead!
