StarCraft II becomes free to play today! We reported earlier that Blizzard announced at BlizzCon 2017 that they are rebranding and making StarCraft II FREE to play. What does Blizzard mean when they say that StarCraft II will be free to play? Here are the full details!
It’s Now Just StarCraft II
Blizzard is simplifying the name to just StarCraft II. This will make it far less confusing for new gamers who, earlier, would have to choose between :
- StarCraft II: Starter Edition
- StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
- StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm
- StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void
- StarCraft II: Nova Covert Ops
- StarCraft II: The Complete Collection
StarCraft II Free To Play Explained
Blizzard had earlier made StarCraft II partially free-to-play with StarCraft II: Starter Edition, which lets you play the first four missions of the single-player Wings of Liberty campaign. In the rebranded StarCraft II game, they are extending that by:
- Making the entire Wings of Liberty campaign FREE to play
You will have free and full access to the original StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty single-player campaign.[adrotate group=”2″] - Allowing you FREE access to StarCraft II’s multiplayer content
You will be able to access the Unranked and Versus AI multiplayer modes for free. To unlock the Ranked mode permanently, you will need to earn 10 First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI play. - Making Co-op Commanders available to play for FREE
All current and upcoming Co-op Commanders will be available to play for free up to level five. The exceptions are Co-op Commanders Raynor, Kerrigan and Artanis – you can level them up to your heart’s content. The level restriction for weekly mutations will also be removed.
In short, Blizzard is basically making StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty FREE to play, with free access to multiplayer and Co-op Commanders.
When Blizzard officially kicks off the StarCraft II free to play offer, it will be made available at the official StarCraft II page.
But I Already Purchased StarCraft II…
If you had earlier purchased StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, Blizzard will give you StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm for FREE.
All you have to do is log-in between November 8 and December 8, 2017, to claim your free access to StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm.
If you had earlier purchased the Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, or Nova Covert Ops expansion packs as of 31 October 2017, Blizzard will send you you a small thank you in form of an exclusive Ghost skin, as well as three new portraits.
Other Campaigns Will Be Discounted
On top of making Wings of Liberty free to play, Blizzard is also making all of the other single-player campaigns (Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and Nova Covert Ops) available at the reduced prices of:
- $14.99 individually, or
- $39.99 for the complete bundle
Again, these prices are only being offered from 14 November 2017 onwards. So don’t buy these campaigns just yet!
