Identify Your Card

Since the first launching of the Radeon 9800 Pro more than a year back, there have been many revisions and types of Radeon 9800 Pro cards, for both 128MB and 256MB models.

Therefore, I will run through the most common variants and examine their "moddability" to a true Radeon 9800XT. Please note that I can't possibly cover all of the many variants, so kindly inform me if I miss your card!

Please note that there's no official Radeon 9800XT 128MB, while the third party manufacturers have released their own version and claimed to be Radeon 9800XT 128MB.

256MB Radeon 9800 Pro Models

I will start with the 256MB models. The 256MB models are a lot easier to distinguish as there are 4 versions so far in the market.

Radeon 9800 Pro with R350 core, DDR II memory

This card is NOT moddable into a true Radeon 9800 XT.

Radeon 9800 Pro with R360 core, 8x32MB DDR memory

This card can be modded into a true Radeon 9800XT with OVERDRIVE support using original Radeon 9800XT BIOS images.

Radeon 9800 Pro with R360 core, 16x16MB DDR memory

This is yet another revision of 9800 Pro 256MB model using the same Hynix 2.8ns on the 128MB model. But on this card, it has double the number of memory chips.

It can be modded with the standard Radeon 9800XT BIOS, but it will not enable support for OVERDRIVE and temperature monitoring.

Radeon 9800 with R360 core, 128-bits memory interface

This card is NOT moddable because there are no hacked BIOS images available.

Early examples of this card from Sapphire were given the Radeon 9800 Pro name. However, these cards are NOT true Radeon 9800 Pro cards because they only come with a 128-bits memory interface.

Such cards are NOT recommended at all, even if you are not planning to mod!

128MB Radeon 9800 Pro Models

Now, let's check out the common 128MB variants.

This card is NOT moddable.

Radeon 9800 Pro with R360 core, Samsung memory, 9800 Pro PCB

This card is moddable using 'modded' BIOS images for 128MB cards using Samsung memory.

Radeon 9800 Pro with R360 core, Hynix memory, 9800 Pro PCB

This card is moddable using 'modded' BIOS images for 128MB cards using Hynix memory.

Radeon 9800 Pro with R360 core, Hynix memory, 9800XT PCB

This card should be moddable using 'modded' BIOS images for 128MB cards using Hynix memory. This card MAY comes with LM63 chip which is used for monitoring the temperature. Flashing the correct BIOS could unlock the OVERDRIVE tab.

Don't confuse this card with the 256MB model. They look identical. In fact, the only difference is the memory chips used. The 128MB model normally comes with 2.8ns Hynix memory chips while the 256MB model comes with 2.5ns Hynix memory chips. LM63 chip may or may not be present.

Radeon 9800 Pro with R360 core, Unknown PCB

This is the latest card design from MSI and Medion. It uses a non-reference PCB design, with a floppy drive power connector in the center of the card. These cards also use cheaper capacitors, unlike other Radeon 9800 Pro cards based on the ATI reference design.

This card will NOT work with standard 9800 XT BIOS, therefore they are not moddable.

This card is NOT moddable because there are no hacked BIOS images available.

Early examples of this card from Sapphire were given the Radeon 9800 Pro name. However, these cards are NOT true Radeon 9800 Pro cards because they only come with a 128-bits memory interface.

Radeon 9800 Pro All-In-Wonder

No available BIOS for this card.
