The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 Tech Report

For some reason, NVIDIA chose to officially launch the new GeForce GTX 770 graphics card a week after they launched the GeForce GTX 780. They could have announced it at the same time as the GeForce GTX 780. After all, the new GeForce GTX 770 is really just a pimped-up version of the GeForce GTX 680.

The new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 is based on the same GK104 GPU used in the GeForce GTX 680. It has the full complement of 1536 CUDA cores with a 40 MHz (4%) faster base clock and a 27 MHz (2.6%) faster boost clock.

The only significant feature that the GeForce GTX 770 brings to the table is its 7 Gbps GDDR5 graphics memory - the fastest memory clock speed to date! This allows it to deliver a peak memory bandwidth of just over 224 GB/s, or 16.6% more than that of the GeForce GTX 680!

Like the GeForce GTX TITAN and the GeForce GTX 780, it will also support the newer GPU Boost 2.0, which gives you more advanced controls for overclocking, fan control, and hardware monitoring.

Here are the specifications of the new GeForce GTX 770. For more detailed specifications of this and other graphics cards, please take a look at our Desktop Graphics Comparison Guide.

This is how the new GeForce GTX 770 compares to NVIDIA's key replacement target - the GeForce GTX 570 :

A Big Upgrade Over The GeForce GTX 570

NVIDIA is targeting the GeForce GTX 770 at current users of the GeForce GTX 570, and possibly GeForce GTX 670. That is because they found out that, according to the latest Steam survey, users of the GeForce GTX 570 and GeForce GTX 670 have the highest installed base of all $399-class graphics cards. So, NVIDIA hopes that they will see the GeForce GTX 770 as a great upgrade from their current graphics cards.

When compared to the GeForce GTX 570, the new GeForce GTX 770 is 65% faster, so that's a great reason to upgrade. Gamers upgrading from a GeForce GTX 570 to the new GeForce GTX 770 will also benefit from other Kepler features like support for up to four displays (including support for running NVIDIA Surround from one GPU), GPU Boost 2.0, TXAA and a quieter fan.

Users of the GeForce GTX 670 have a lot less reason to upgrade because the GeForce GTX 770 is only about 15% faster. This doesn't mean that the GeForce GTX 770 isn't a great card. It just demonstrates how much faster and better the Kepler GPUs are, compared to the older Fermi GPUs.
