Kingston Flash Card Readers
The folks at Kingston Technology have long been producing flash memory cards of various form factors, whether it's good old CompactFlash, or the newer SD and microSD card iterations. Although these flash memory cards can be directly accessed via their host devices (e.g. your smartphone or digital camera), the process can be quite cumbersome and the data transfer process slow.
For those who prefer the convenience and speed of a separate card reader, Kingston Technology offers a variety of USB-based card readers. They are generally divided into two types - full-fledged media readers that support a wide variety of card types, and a more compact card reader that supports a limited number of card formats.
Today, we are going to take a look at their latest USB 3.0 card reader - the Kingston MobileLite G3. Unlike full-sized media readers, the MobileLite G3 is an ultra-portable card reader that's not only fast, but can also fit tight pockets. Let's check it out!
Packaging
The Kingston MobileLite G3 reader was packaged in a plastic clamshell. Oh, how we hate such clamshell packaging. They are great for display and theft prevention, but absolutely horrendous to open and cannot be reused. If only Kingston would go with easier-to-open blister packs, or improve on the clamshell packaging by adding easy-open tabs or pre-perforated edges.
Until that happens, just remember that rage won't open this package. Take a deep breath and count to ten. Then take the biggest pair of scissors you have and have a go at it!

Once you cut open the clamshell, you will find the following items :
- the Kingston MobileLite G3 card reader with an attached mini-lanyard,
- and a cardboard backing contains warranty and usage information.
There is no USB extension cable because the MobileLite G3 is designed to be as portable as possible.
The Kingston MobileLite G3
The Kingston MobileLite G3 is a very light and compact card reader. It is roughly the size of a large USB flash drive (e.g. the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 G2), but lighter. It comes with a mini-lanyard attached to the back. The mini-lanyard has a ring so you can attach it to a keychain or a longer lanyard.

On one end of the reader is the USB 3.0 connector. On the other end are two slots for either the full-sized Secure Digital (SD) card formats, and the smaller microSD card formats.
