The 16 GB DataTraveler Elite 3.0

The 16 GB Kingston DataTraveler Elite 3.0 is an average-size USB flash drive, as they go these days. At 6.9 cm long, 2.2 cm wide and 1.1 cm thick, it is basically about half the size of the gigantic Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Gen. 2. With an all-plastic body, its weight is so inconsequential that Kingston doesn't even bother quoting it in their spec sheet.

The DataTraveler Elite 3.0 is backward-compatible with USB 2.0. You can just plug it into any USB 2.0 port and it will run just fine, albeit at a much slower speed.

Usable Capacity

Our review sample has a storage capacity of 16 GB - the low-end model in the Kingston DataTraveler Elite 3.0 series. We checked that out by formatting it in NTFS using Microsoft Windows 7. The actual formatted capacity was 15,804,133,376 bytes. This is quite a bit less (196 MB) than the official capacity.

By default, it's formatted using the FAT32 file system with 4 KB clusters, which works fine with all Windows operating systems. However, you should reformat it to the NTFS, or even better, the exFAT file system, if you wish to copy files that are larger than 4 GB in size (e.g. movies).

Let's take a look at its specifications.
