The OCZ Enyo is, by far, the fastest USB 3.0 external drive we have ever seen. When used with a USB 3.0 port, it was about 3x faster than the Western Digital My Passport Essential, which is a USB 3.0 portable hard disk drive. Even when it was used with a USB 2.0 port, the OCZ Enyo was actually faster than competing USB 3.0 hard disk drives. In fact, it was 67% faster than the WD My Passport Essential.

In the High-End test, the OCZ Enyo once again came up tops. When used with a USB 3.0 port, it was 3x faster than either the FireWire-powered Western Digital My Book, or the Western Digital My Passport Essential USB 3.0 portable hard disk drive. Even when we used it with a USB 2.0 port, it was still 13% faster than either drives.

Transfer Rate Range

This chart shows you the range of platter-to-buffer transfer rates from the innermost track to the outermost track for hard disk drives, and the range of memory cell-to-controller transfer rates for solid state drives. In other words, it shows you the range of transfer rates of hard disk drives and solid state drives (from minimum and maximum).

Unlike hard disk drives which deliver a wide range of transfer rates, solid state drives have an almost uniform transfer rate across the entire device. With a virtually flat transfer rate of 199-200 MB/s, the OCZ Enyo was far ahead of the competition, even USB 3.0 drives like the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex and the Western Digital My Passport Essential.

Even when we used it with a USB 2.0 port, the OCZ Enyo was one of the fastest USB 2.0 drives in this comparison.
