OCZ RevoDrive 80 GB PCI Express Solid State Drive Review Rev. 2.0

OCZ Solid State Drives

OCZ Technology has one of the most extensive SSD line-ups in the industry. They not only offer solid state drives in the traditional 1.8", 2.5" or 3.5" hard disk drive form factors, but also less common upgrade paths like PCI Express and USB 3.0.

Their PCI Express family alone offers three different product segments :

  • Maximum Performance / Enterprise : OCZ Z-Drive R3
  • Performance / Enterprise : OCZ Z-Drive R2
  • Mainstream : OCZ RevoDrive and OCZ RevoDrive X2

Today, we will be looking at the OCZ RevoDrive 80 GB solid state drive, which is one of their mainstream PCI Express solid state drives. It features the following key features :

  • Superb 4K random writes up to 70,000 IOPS

  • PCI Express interface for superior speeds of up to 540 MB/s

  • Onboard RAID 0 for twice the throughput

  • 2 million hours MTBF

  • 3 years warranty

Let's find out how well this drive performs!

Packaging

The OCZ RevoDrive 80 GB SSD comes in a nice cardboard box. The entire OCZ RevoDrive series appears to use the same packaging, with just a black sticker at the lower right corner of the back of the back to identify the drive inside. This label not only displays the storage capacity of the drive, it also lists the common specifications of the OCZ RevoDrive series of solid state drives.

Inside the outer cardboard packaging is a hard box that slides out. The OCZ RevoDrive, which looks more like a PCI Express graphics card than a solid state drive, rests on a thick cushion of foam padding. When you take everything out, this is what you should get :

  • One OCZ RevoDrive 80 GB solid state drive
  • One OCZ RevoDrive installation guide
  • One "My SSD Is Faster Than Your HDD" sticker
