Hacking The Radeon HD 4800 Series Fan

As everyone already knows by now, the ATI Radeon HD 4800 series of graphics cards is fast. REALLY fast. As our review of the ASUS EAH4870 has shown, the Radeon HD 4870 smashed both its "original" rival, the GeForce 9800 GTX+ as well as its "current" rival, the GeForce GTX 260. As a result, the prices of these NVIDIA graphics cards have fallen so fast that the folks at Santa Clara are still nursing their nose bleeds.

However, users of the NVIDIA graphics cards have one advantage over the ATI Radeon HD 4800 series of graphics cards. It is actually easier to overclock the NVIDIA graphics cards, as NVIDIA provides full access to the GPU and memory clocks as well as the fan speed.

On the other hand, ATI not only restricts the amount of overclocking that can be performed, they also failed (intentionally?) to include the option to adjust the fan speed. As a result, it is easier for NVIDIA users to overclock their cards, and they can overclock to higher clock speeds.

To learn more about overclocking ATI or NVIDIA graphics cards, please take a look here :

Now, the overclock limits in the ATI Catalyst Control Center can be circumvented using the AMD GPU Clock Tool or RivaTuner, so we won't be discussing them in this guide. Instead, this guide is going to concentrate on teaching you how to hack the fan speed of ATI Radeon HD 4800 series graphics cards using the Catalyst Control Center. Let's get down to it!

RivaTuner

Due to popular request, we decided to show you how to get the fan running at the speed you want in RivaTuner as well. First, let's take a look at the hacking method for the ATI Catalyst Control Center.
