Intel Atom & Centrino Atom Technology Report

A month ago, we were given the first details on Intel's Silverthorne processor. Unlike the Intel Core 2 processors, the Silverthorne processor is built around the new IA micro-architecture which allows for better power efficiency and yet is fully compatible with the Core 2 instruction set.

On March 3, 2008, Intel not only launched the Silverthorne processor, they also released details of the Diamondville processor and the two new brand names to go with them. Let's take a look at the new Atoms!

Both the Silverthorne and the Diamondville processors will be formally known henceforth as the Intel Atom processors. That's quite an apt name considering the focus on making them small.

The mobile platform previously codenamed Menlow is now officially known as the Centrino Atom Processor Technology. The Centrino Atom platform will consist of the Intel Atom processor as well as an Intel chipset with integrated PowerVR SGX graphics and an Intel WiFi module.
